Universal vs. Rhodium/Blackstone - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro ROM Development

Universal:
Perfect form factor
The best keyboard
Cheaper than Rhodium and HD
Rhodium/Blackstone:
Faster processor
More RAM
Any other thing? don´t think so....
So, after this small comparative I decided to sell my 1 month old Rhoduim and come back to Universal!!
There is nothing really as a real upgrade for Uni right now...Let´s see what HTC launches in the future.

Yes Uni is VGA and Rhodium/Blackstone is WVGA LOL welcome back...

i don't know why don't they create PDAs with big sized VGA screen nowadays, just like our UNI...my friend just bought a Kaiser, i tried it but it's a joke with that tiny screen and qvga res. My boss have a diamond2 but the screen is still too little for me...

Hey Orb,
So,also visiting one of the portuguese ppc forum!
I like my HD, lighter, easy to transport,MORE MEMORY and thats it. i see no really benefit from vga to wvga.
as I told by pm, running the same apps, universal seems faster.
university with 256mbps would be a killer
I hope to get my ushered repaired to install a new Tomal ROM!a

Well
What can I say - it warms my heart to know I am not alone in keeping my Uni (actually, I have 2.5 Unis now...). Must admit, I did try to switch to other things and for the sheer vanity and feeling girly I also have LG Prada (and quite a few others - Wizard, Elf etc etc), but I have no intentions of parting with my right hand - my precioussss Uni. I sleep with the bloody thing and it is always with me! Someone asked me to sell one of my Unis 2 days ago and I refused, even though I have enough parts to assemble another one if I need it, haha.
In fact, as soon as I finish typing this, I am off to bed, because I have a new ebook loaded that I started to read last night and I can't wait to get into it.
I will possibly consider looking for bits and pieces of broken Shift, just to assemble one as a challenge.

Great to hear we still have Uni for a long time!!
Cheers,

Uni the classic!
I first bought an i-mate JasJar (the very first Uni) within 3 months of its release in 2005. I broke the screen and then bought a Vodafone V1640 (a more refined Uni). I've tried other HTC devices since then - TyTN 2, Touch Pro, Advantage. But I have come to the conclusion that the Uni is hard to beat. The concept design shown earlier in this thread would still not beat a Uni - it's hinge would not swivel and fold over the keyboard like the Uni. Recently, I got my Uni RAM upgraded to 128MB by pocketpctechs.com (in California), for about USD135. Now I am even more enamoured by the Uni than ever before. I have a 16GB SDHC in it. Wonderful to be able to work on the same MS-Word document on the Uni or my laptop.
I have often wondered about those who complain about the size or weight of the Uni. If you want a really comfortable keyboard and a decent display, then forget those razor-thin devices. Lightweight and the kind of ergonomics the Uni offers are mutually exclusive!

reading all here now make my classic mustang 64 make me more proud even when side by side with someone's rhodium in the same table

6 days ago I by SE Xperia X1 just to see can I get use to it. I have my UNI 4 yers now. And guest whot, my sim card is still in UNI, and I'm caryng around SE just to play with it ! I mising taht 4 row big keybord an that big screan on SE. So I will defenetly sell X1 and continue to use my old firiend

I just bought a Rhodium and I am keeping both!!!!!
I love my Uni but the RAM issues are wanting........

Yeah it´s good to have it!
even with an upgrade I´ll kee minte too

Its been a long time since I've been here last, but I'm so glad to see that the Uni is still much loved and talked about! I've had mine for over a year now, bought it after my Elfin broke its screen. And since then, I've also a 5800 but really, nothing comes close to the Uni for usefulness.
I sort of thought about going with the Xperia, but disliked the long narrow shape and 3 row keyboard. The Touch ProII (Rhodium) is nice, but just plain too expensive. So, its still the Uni for me, though mine needs a mic repair but happily, she'll be joined by a second Uni coming soon! And then its off to Ca for a Ram upgrade!

Poll - Which phone should I get next? Atom, Mio, or another?

Ladies and Gents:
In approximately 20 days, Mrs Vijay555 is giving birth to Vijay555.1, God willing.
However, more importantly, my phone contract is also coming to an end at the same time, and thus my question to you, should you choose to accept it:
Which phone shall I get next?
I've got a Magician, which I love.
I've got a Universal, which I have a love/hate relationship with. But it's not used as a phone, and won't be.
I'm in a suit all day:
{

}
and so this is a significant factor - small, not a pocket ripper.
The Wizard is unfortunately a bit frumpy for me, like Fat Monica in Friends:
- you know it's got some sexiness in it, but it's a bit too chunky, and it's Omap.
So really, Magician-ish size is pretty much my only criteria.
CPU speed (ARM/OMAP) I can live with, I'll twist it's arm and speed it up either way.
Keyboard would be nice, but not essential.
I want something that'll be available in T minus 20 days.
Which in my mind only really leaves the Atom and the Mio A701. Or perhaps "none of the above"?.
The Mio is a bit "vertically over-challenged", but it's ok. Also slightly plastic fantasic, no?
The Atom seems to be a strong contender.
What do you think? Thanks for listening!
V
i don't really recommend Mio at all, sure i have yet to see if the new one is better, but i've heard really crap reviews about the A700 (i'm seeing alot of 1-2month new ones out for sale 2nd hand too) and i have an A201 GPS model of my own which is in the car as a navigator. the A201 i have has caused me abit of trouble already and i've pratically given up on having it be anything besides a navigation unit for the car. so impressions so far aren't too good of the Mio brand as a whole.
i heard alot of problems with the Atom when it first came out too, but with new firmware updates i'm seeing better reviews and less problems. it does seem to be rather costly though, being almost six thousand hong kong dollars (we don't have many special contract deals with the Atom here) considering an extra 20% or so will get me a brand new Universal outright. price factor aside though it seems to match your needs, the suit, the power, and the size factor. like you say, a strong contender mate. i really don't have a better suggestion.
Ok, here's my two cents: For your Magician, I'd recommend an E-Ten M600. It's stylish (to me, anyways. I like black . But that's subjective) And it can do the job. For your choice of Universal replacement, I would suggest an Advance TC MAGIC. It's not HTC, but wait till you see.
http://www.advancetc.com/
It's pretty amazing that the company would show photos of the phone being held by someone with so much dirt under their fingernails and smudges on the screen. Also, the phone doesn't appear to be very compact; much beefier then the HTC Wizard I think.
--Jas
Like I said... a replacement for his Universal, not for his Magician. I recommended an M600 for that job.
Prophet - you know you want to!! 8)
Good point, forget li'l ol Prophet and Charmer. Cute and the form factor is identical. But I think the Atom has the edge over both in terms of size, and it has a flash.
What say you, TheBrit? Are you happy with it?
V
Ive had both prophet and atom..Much prefer the dopod ..I found the atom to be real buggy this was with the second rom though.. think theres been a few updates since
I went from magician to the Mio A701 and I am really pleased.
I like the fact that it does everything in one unit. Having GPS on it is great to have.
The main thing that took time to get used to was the differences between WM2003 to WM5.
Yes there are a few little niggles but nothing major. It's not noticably larger than the magician. And it comes with great extras in the box (car mount and car charger in particular). It's also noticably faster than the magician was (IMO).
Hi Vj!
After comparing features on www.gsmarena.com between ETEN, Mio, and various HTC devices, I finally settled on the Prophet (sold as imate jamin).
- size
- connectivity (WiFi g, EDGE)
- full size SD
- 2MP camera (not critical but a bonus non the less)
Have received it yet though so cant comment on performance. Will post opinion when it arrives.
After the latest official ROM upgrade of the Atom, you will not regret having it or any of its derivatives
After xda2, I have had K-jam and currently own both the Prophet and Atom
Thanks very much for your feedback thus far all.[b/]
Prophet has the advantage that it uses full size SD, which saves me buying another one. And as levenum indicates, it's got a good feature set.
Atom is sexy: victoradjei's post suggests it's working ok now.
flicka's recommendation on the Mio is strong - I'm swayed by a new "toy", ie a feature that'll let me do something new, and I have some ideas about some GPS plugins I want to write, so that'd be nice too.
Sigh, it's all still in the running! What to do, what to do!
V
Yes, getting a new toy can be a challenge when there are so many options. I debated my choice for couple of month, but in the end the availability and price 'helped' me make up my mind.
Here's a suggestion: Assign each quality of the device (design, size, communications, GPS etc.) a value in points. Then calculate the total value for devices you want to choose from and see who gets the highest score. I recommend doing it on paper and not in your head so you wont suddenly decide that full SD worth more than WiFi g instead of b.
Set your goals. Calculate. Go for the winner.
If you don't like it, remember - your contract is not for life, and by the time it expires, there will be a whole new generation of toys out there.
Until I bought the atom I had never seen malloc return NULL. Even after all the upgrades it still fails often at tasks like performing a system snapshot. Ringtones still get choppy at times and it turns itself on for no reason. There is something seriously wrong with the atom. They can hide it from average users but when you try programming on the thing it becomes obvious that it is not that good. Of course you could just code for every possible outcome but its just not an issue on other devices.
OdeeanRDeathshead: very intersting observations, and obviously very important. Difficult scenario either way: code to take into account the Atom's weaknesses, or lose Atom compatibility?
But Windows Mobile is peculiar enough already, having to code for sytem specific bugs is a pain either way My heart goes out to you!

2mpixl auto focus flash (one of the best camera for ppc on the market)
wifi, bluetooth 2,infra,normal keypad that is very useful ,i can use it as full speed card reader for my 4 gb mini sd .
b4 i bought the asus i was going for atom, but i saw that asus has the full package that i need .
consider that the atom is the same size or bit smaller then the sda2 mini.
and the asus p525 is 1 cm longer and 2 mm thicker.

This is quite true isn't it? I've been looking for a more powerful XDA, but the Universal seems to be the most powerful at the moment? I'm not talking about the huge size semi-laptops though!
Is there anything with more power (CPU+VGA) than the Universal??
It might be old, but it's really the only type in it's class (as far as im aware - and excluding the 7500).

Release Now in asia....
naaa!

I'm in general agreement about the lack of a replacement for the Uni. The Advantage is simply too large for a phone - the Uni is very much borderline, in my opinion.
If HTC could provide a PDA Phone that had a full keyboard with numbers at the top (like the Uni), a VGA (or better) screen, preferably clamshell in a smaller package, then I think it would be a winner (especially with an outer LCD to display caller ID).
If you look at the screen on the Uni, it's about 5.5cm tall by 7.5cm wide, and the keyboard is 5cm tall by 11.5cm wide. If the packaging of the Uni could be brought down to, say, 12cm x 6cm x 1.5cm (or more like the Nokia E90 13cm x 6cm x 2cm ) - then you are only looking at being marginally larger than a mass market phone like the Nokia N95, which is 10cm x 5.5cm x 2cm (roughly).
I don't have a problem with the spec of the Uni, per se. Sure, a better camera, faster processor, and built in GPS would be great - for me, the biggest problem with the Uni is it's size (and the fact it's a CRAP phone). I can impress my mates showing DivX movies, playing MP3s, playing games, Sat Nav, and browsing the net (with a PROPER browser), but after they get over the cool features, they all say "it's a bit big though, isn't it?".
A couple of friends have moved away from WM phones (XDA Mini, and Uni) because of a) size, and b) the fact that as phones, they are generally poor. If the features of the Uni could be put into a smaller form factor (and maybe improved along the way), and the phone features made more reliable, then I'm sure there would be a whole bunch of technically savy punters queuing up to buy one - I just don't think the Advantage (or Shift, even) with it's enhanced features, but bigger size, is the way to go.
Cheers,
Steve.
It's not really the size that bothers me. I'm a big guy, so a big phone kinda suits me. The only problem I have with it is the clamshell design. I can't use it with one hand! I hate it when someone sends me an SMS message on the road, and I have a soda on one hand.. I have to put the soda down just to use my Uni! If I can find a phone with a slide out keyboard, 3G, and VGA screen, 520Mhz or faster processor... I'd definitely replace this Uni.
I gust got back to my O2 Xda Exec after having a romance with something called 6915.
VGA VGA VGA VGA can't go on without it!
If the past is any indication (and it usually is), then there will never be a WM6 for Universal. Just because you think it's great - so do I, by the way - means absolutely nothing to phone manufacturers.
They want to sell phones. Why do you think they keep coming up with more and more models? They don't care about you or your OS, they want to make money. They won't make much money selling an OS upgrade. The Universal is not even 1% of the total phone market - just look at how many people post here at the Universal forum. Hundreds? Worldwide, there are probably thousands of Universal owners - a microscopic drop, compared to the hundreds of millions of other phones.
We are just like the folks who are trying to make anabolic steroids legal - they'll never succeed, because their lobby is just not big enough (while cigarettes that are clinically proven to be thousands of times more dangerous, are perfectly legal).
We, Universal owners, are just too insignificant. (Trying to get support for Universal here in Asia is just impossible - the masses want ridiculously small phones and they are happy with crappy screens.) We don't matter - who's going to bother with thousands when they can sell tens of millions? This is the curse of buying a top-of-the-line product: you are the absolute minority. Just as yourself, how many Vertu service centers do you know of?
Nobody !!!
Uni is end of life, and will probably be replaced by another modele
Lame... well i suppose i'll have to make do with a custom non-official release then i guess...!
maybe you can check the XDA Flame device. i think its a nice one, but it only got 64mb ram. if it have a 128mb version with WM6 upgrade it will be a nice successor of the universal.

please say it have tilt
ya. using 13" monitor at home is so cool! haha
WTF i want a 2.8" 640x480 when i can get sony X1 with 3" 800x480 WVGA!
Well...
My current awareness is that there is no tilt on this device, it just slides out (i can be wrong, as looking at some more pics there may be a mechanism under there...)
I am a big fan of the X1 with the 3" screen but think about it, the X1 is WVGA, most programs that people make within this site are QVGA and VGA compatible... does not go so well on a WVGA screen, however i don't doubt that will be a few WVGA apps - but not alot. Its all about compatibility.
I mainly want a conformation from somewhere/anyone that this device supports a microSDHC card (i.e. it has a memory card slot), i have read that it may, but no actual conformation... If it does, hello HTC. The NO microSDHC slot on the diamond put me off, i hope this one has one...
I also hope that the X1's panels can be replicated for other devices, but we will have to wait and see for that one...

I have a feeling its a quadband phone but the radio rom isnt quite ready for prime time (it doesnt have to be yet, the phone isnt launching in the USA yet)
As for the iPhone theory, dude, if I took a silver sharpie and wrote "3G!" on the side of a regular red brick, it would compete at the same level as the 3g iPhone. Its got 3g written on it and it holds down paper.

Looking forward to July if it really is released then.
I see at http://www.gsmhelpdesk.nl/en/specs.php?id=2522 it does say MicroSD I hope it's does have a MicroSDHC card slot since the 16GB card is due in June.
As for the screen I've had a Tosh G900 for the last 11months and 800x480 is rubbish. As loads of apps don't work either wont run at all crash (TomTom portrait) or do mad tripple drawing stuff (TomTom landscape).
800x480 is nice for web pages though. Altough at 10pixels per mm you need good eyes for small text!
I think I am drawn towards the Raphael over the Xperia X1 due to it's tiny size. As well as a lot of apps not using the extra pixels of the WVGA devices.
I'm also keen to get back to HTC and all the ROM cooking and updates that have been missing on the Tosh which still has loads of bugs after nearly a year.

Anyone recommend a VGA replacement for my TyTN II??

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has had much experience trying to replace a TyTN II. I've been really please with it, but I don't really use the keyboard and would really love a VGA screen.
I've looked at the Eten X650 and X800 but the reviews are a bit mixed to say the least and I'm just not sure!
So has anyone made the switch from an HTC device to an Eten or i-mate etc successfully or any other similar phone? And found them to be useable?!?!
Any suggestions on a new model would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advanced,
Gadget.
You could look at the Touch Diamond. If you want a keyboard wait for the Touch Pro.
gadgetdude, similar situation here. Except I'm moving from a standard tytn to an I-mate 9502 and I need the keyboard. This is only day 2 in the switch for me, but I can say it's different. One big thing I miss is the lack of the great HTC apps like the home plugin, audio manager, and task manager. That hurts. Also, I gotta say, while the VGA is good for browsing and makes the fonts look great, it's kinda of a waste on a 2.8" screen.
This phone is a little quirky compared to the tytn, but it has some good points. I'll probably be using it until the X1 comes out. Good luck.
Now with all the VGA devices coming out, I would have thought someone would have converted the original HTC home to fit VGA. I know there is currently a version out there that works but it makes every so damn small. Imagine how the original HTC would look in VGA if it fit to the screen lke the QVGA version does.
More info...
Thanks dudes for all you're input.
Still not sure tho - the Touch Pro looks rather cool! And I guess it'll have proper VGA versions of the HTC software?!
Has anyone got any opinions on the 'joystick' control on the Eten X800 or X650 though? I'm still not convinced whether it'll be a real pain or not!
Cheers dudes!
Have you looked at the tosh g900?
This actually has the highest res screen on any windows mobile device (to my knowledge) at 800x480. Its gorgeous for browsing and looking at pictures/photo's etc. It can be a bit slow when rotating orientation but thats the only time.
The original firmware was VERY buggy and so it built up a reputation according to this - bear in mind though, it was brand new and early adoption should expect issues. This reputation is now unfounded imho. Since firmware 3.01 and above, its rock solid and I never have to reboot mine.
This is what I do on mine without any issues/crashes:
Today screen extra's -
HTC X-Button,
SPB Weather,
SPB Backup,
Rhinocode Launch Pro,
Corner-A PDA Status
Other apps installed and working -
Saman SMSDeliveryReceiptFix
Micromega MSS Converter
ZoomSMS
YouTube Player
OneNote (although, this wont pull notes FROM the PC but will push TOO the pc)
MS Voicecommand
Google Maps
Route66 (sadly, the only Satnav i've found to work correctly with its high res screen)
Oh something else this phone did first, afaik, was to have a USB hub in it! You wont believe how handy it is to plug in USB storage devices (right up to external 3.5" disks!) at work to move stuff around.
The fingerprint security/program launcher is excellent - wish more phones had it! I also use the phone constantly on 3g/hsdpa as a modem for my pc and browse the web loads. I've had to buy a 3000mamp battery which makes the phone a bit bulky but to be fair, i don't think there are many people who are as heavy users as me. I also have configured a mail2web push email and a couple of pop 3 accounts.
BUT I am getting rid for two reasons:
No built in GPS
camera is w*&k
I am waiting for the Samsung I900 Omnia which is released any day now here in England.
Samsung http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=samsung+i900&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
Tosh http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=tosh+g900&meta=
I had the eten M800 and the joystick was ok. It made it abit larger when in your pocket. Personally I like the joystick on the imate 8502. This joystick is the best I've used yet buty personally I like the 5-way pad over any joystick.
If screen resolution is a top priority, then take a look at Sony Xperia X1, it does have a physical keyboard but has a WVGA screen, thats 800 by 480. It's designed by HTC and marketed by Sony Ericsson, so best of both worlds.

and also not out until end of this year/early next year(?) .... continualy delayed product. By the time it comes out its going to be old. Compared to the G900 it offers very little extra and the G900 was out almost a year ago (and so has had all the bugs ironed out of it, something a brand new product will not be able to claim), specialy a Windows Mobile device.
you can also wait for the futur Toshiba G920 or G910

Sadly thats the case with a lot of phones. A great many smartphones out there have this issue. For example, my G900 has the Nvidia chipset in it but it aint used properly, and with an 800x480 screen, it would make a massive diference.
Why, oh why do they not give them drivers?
its not just phone company i remember the psp was like that as well...originally was a faster processor but they blocked it...off topic...anyways i seen a video of someone tapping into the graphic chip on the tytn ii maybe there is still hope...
Thanks for all the input on this.
In the end after much soul searching (well, phone searching, anyway!) I decided to go for the new Touch Diamond. Seems to fit what I'm after the most.
It's arriving tomorrow and I can't wait!!
Gadgetdude,
You have PM

Shall we get the Raphael?

Checking in!
Just to share a thought. Looking back more than a year ago, I had to spend some good effort hunting for the TyTN 1 (Got the first available variant model Taiwan CHT9000). This year alot of decent phones came out, making decisions much harder to make. I guess it is good news...
The Raphael would be a dream keyboarded WM 6.1 micro SD device but since I currently own the HTC Diamond and Apple iPhone 3G. I have to double think before getting this. May be I will have the Diamond sold and get the Raphael.
The iPhone lacks AD2P Bluetooth which is a serious draw back. The battery is non swappable, no memory card (not really a big deal cos the itunes sync is much more reliable than Active Sync ).
Feel free to share your thoughts!
Wow, you really are a "PPC-Warrior" with all those devices :O.
drivers?
Shall we get the Raphael?
Mmm that depends of the performance of the gpu,
or presence of a graphic driver!
Does anybody has information about this issue?
Does it take SDHC or just regular microSD?
takes SDHC up to 32GB
I had a dream...
What about the famous HTC Dream. its been long roumered to be out before year ends. Would it be worth waiting for I wonder.
I have so been waiting for this device to hit the shelves. HTC should have had this thing available 2 weeks ago or at least made some noise about it. Imagine if people knew about this!!
Apple sold 1 million Iphones here in Australia in the first 3 days and you cant even type on the damn thing without having to constantly correct yourself if you have fingers bigger than what my 5 yr old has and the GPS cant speak directions, no messenger and list of draw backs goes on.
I'm just hanging for this thing to arrive.
Will the Raphael have the same diamond back as the ,uh, Diamond? I read somewhere that the diamond doesn't lay flat on the table. I also read somewhere that there will be an optional flat back. Any thoughts?
The T-mobile branded Raphael has a flat backcover...
I can't really think of any reason not to buy a Raphael. This looks like the perfect device for current standards. And I don't think it has any serious flaw, which kept me from buying other devices (like the video issue on Tytn II for example).
The Raphael looks indeed quite great to me, but I like the screen size of the Xperia. Would there be a reason not to go for the Xperia?
The only thing that's putting me off is the screen size. 2.8 inches really isn't very big, especially when you're used to the Universal and its wonderful 3.7 inch VGA screen.
The xperia 3 inch screen isn't much bigger than the touch pro, plus I prefer the touch pro styling. I also wonder if the xperia's WVGA screen will cause software compatability problems?

1. maybe software problems with that screen solution
2. no video out
3. probably no (or not a lot) support by the chefs and professionals in this community for that hardware...
4. no release date avaliable

I have read the keyboard is awful. Unless they improve it before releasing, which is highly unlikely because that would change the design, I wouldn't buy it, afterall the main reason for me to choose Pro instead of Diamond is the keyboard, which is considered excellent by some people who had a chance to use it.
thanks, your arguments make enough sense to reconsider my liking. I wish the Diamond Pro would have a 3' screen ;-)
I heard that X-Peria is going to be released only in oct end , so thats quite some time whereas Raphael is scheduled to be launched on aug 5th i guess.
I am eying on the Raphael.

the physical screen size of the X1 is only 0.2" than the Raphael...
A good reason not to go the X1 is the wonderful Xda-developers forum
Another is that it's a bit delay
Personally the perfect phone for me would be a Diamond with micro-sd card support and a 3.5" screen with VGA but I sold my prophet and I can't no longer wait for the perfect phone. So, the best for now is the Raphael...
P.S. - Samsung Omnia is also a no go for me cause it doesn't have a stylus...
Actually the omnia has a stylus which looks like lipsick lol, there's nowhere on the handset to store it thought.. picture below.

Sunlight readable?
I am pretty sure I want to get the Touch Pro over the Xperia X1 apart from one thing. The reviews of the Xperia say it's screen is readable under direct sunlight. People I know with the Diamond say it is not.
I've spent the last year with the Tosh G900. It also has the 800x480 like the Xperia but it can't be seen outside. I was thinking that all these small screen high res phones were unreadable in sunlight. Maybe there is a problem with transflective displays at this pixel density?
The Touch Pro has a lot of advantages over the X1, 5 rows of keys, TV out and 640x480 screen (this is better I now know after living with the 800x480 for year and finding loads of apps that wont work). But I like to use TomTom while cycling so sunlight readable would be quite a bonus...
This phone so nearly does everything that I've been waiting so many years for, apart from decent camera with optical zoom and OLED screen. Guess I'll have to wait a few more years before I'm completely happy!
actually the diamond is the first pda/phone i have that the light sensor really works, if there is too much sun he will increase the display light, for me it is quite readable ( better than x7500 for example )
