Hi guys,
I just recently got hold of an HTC Touch Cruise but the O2 XDA Orbit 2 rebranded version.
Ive been installing a few useful apps on this but some of the changes i make are lost after the phone has beeen switched off and then on!
Examples of this are the "hide sim" reg edit and the PCM keyboard as the default.
I am assuming that maybe the O2 version of WM6 on this is locked to prevent making these changes.
First, if anyone can confirm this or if not tell how me how ot get round this problem i would be grateful.
If this is the case then i would like to flash the phone with an "editable" version of WM6, are these what the ROMS people mention on here are?
If i am right about the ROMS could anyone recommend a good ROM, if they are specific to anything, one that is more finger firendly rather than stylus would be about the only thing i can think of to specify.
I realise this is a bit cheeky asking for all this but i have had a brief of the forum but would perhaps jus tlike a few pointers if anyone can spare the time.
Many thanks
Hi,
If you are turning your phone off by holding the power button then when you turn it on again it will reboot to the ROM image and you will lose all of your installed programs and edits. Try turning it "off" with a brief press on the button, you shouldn't lose anything then. At least I don't.
AFIK the standard O2 ROM allows registry edits, however you cannot edit the ROM contents. You can install apps and they should be persistent unless you do a full power down.
As for the question about ROMs, yes they are customised versions of WM6.1.
You MUST run USPL before trying to re-flash your ROM I suggest you read the upgrading forum there is a sticky there about USPL and loads of other threads about upgrading.
Personally I like ASergs and Bepes ROMs better than most. They are stable and have most of the apps I require.
Hope this helps, Good luck
Neil
Thanks so much for your reply and especially the promptness!!!
When i turn my phone off i have been holding the button at the top, i if i just press it shortly then all it does is powers the screen off. To be honest now i can get away without ever powering off since i charge every night.
If my phone freezes etc should i be using the reset button with the stylus to reboot - will this cause me to lose my edits?
Also if i used one of the customised ROMS is it still the same if i turn the phone completley off that i lose any settings?
I will give the upgrade thread now to gain better understanding, thanks again.

What?
Turning it off will cause a hard reset or what exactly do you mean?

I'm sorry to inform you that it should not be behaving that way, and if it does, your phone is most probably broken.
If you mean Hard-Resetting, your phone does not hard-reset when pressing and holding the power button. you'll have to do a combination of other buttons and the soft-reset button to accomplish that.
Oops, Sorry about that! I had total brain failure!
Of course turning the device off by holding the power button does not cause a hard reset.
My apologies for any confusion caused.
Cheers
Neil
Ok, on my device (which is actually an O2 Xda orbit 2, if that makes any difference) When i press the powerbutton once shortly it turns off the screen but all things are still running on the phone eg calls will still come in and alarms, sms etc.
If i press and hold the button the phone switches off completley but then when i turn back on after this i find some stuff has not saved how i expect. Installed apps still remain but things like default keyboard and my hide sim reg change revert.
When you hold down the power button at least on the TC, it asks whether you want to power off, presumably yours isn't asking you and just turns off anyway.
When stuff that you expect to be saved but isn't, like the default keyboard. Do you use sip changer or something like that? If I am using PocketCM keyboard for example and reset my device it defaults back to the Cruise/Diamond keyboard and I have to set PocketCM again. If you use something like a SIP Changer it will set it for you.
So that sounds like configuration things and not necessarily strange behavior.
Help! I cannot hard reset after my touch screen stopped working. Have tried pressinn gps and internet buttons, then pressing reset and keeping hold of gps and internet but device just soft resets. Would leaving the battery out do the same thing?
Alternative hard reset
Hello mate,
You say your screen isn't working but can you still use the keys and scroll wheel to navigate around the software?
If so, open the start menu and navigate to 'settings', 'system' and select 'clear storage'.
Make sure that you've removed your SD card before you do this.
It will perform a hard reset for you.
Lom
I'll try it but I think it asks you to input 1234, which I can't do without the keypad working!
Yes you do have to enter 1234 so I am totally stuck and ready to try the big hammer reset.
Can anyone help?
alternative!!
use my mobiler
this application will let u use ur ppc thru ur pc
i mean u can share n control ur ppc screen thru desktop

Cheers Mate!
Tried what you suggested but i got a message on the screen with a yes no box to install and couldn't get the button to operate using the wheel or any hardware key!
I've put my sim card in my magician and I think I may have to send the polaris back. Bet they'll say its my fault and will want paying to fix it.
I'm going to try leaving the battery out for a while to see if that will "force" a hard reset. I know I havent bashed it as it stopped working just after a phone call which is why I think hard resetting will sort it.
Tried your suggestion on my magician: nice bit of software!
The hard reset prompt is done by the bootloader, no installed software can affect it, simply because it isn't loaded yet.
Anyway, for the unlikely case of the digitizer hardware not being reset by bootloader, try removing the battery instead of pressing the reset button. Yes, thats right, remove the battery while the unit is operating, as rude as it sounds, and reinsert it while holding the GPS + Internet buttons.
It will, of course, prompt you to enter the 1234, but the touch screen should be initialized by the bootloader. If it still wont work - RMA the unit, your digitizer is faulty.
It still wouldnt hard reset so it probably is a hardware fault. looks like its going back.
Anyone else had a similar issue?:
Sent it back to HTC in Milton Keynes where thet diagnosed a duff touchscreen and replaced it under warranty. The service was very fast and hassle free. Well done HTC!
First thing I did after sprite restore (they reload with a fresh ROM) was to install my mobiler as suggested above. No worries if the screen doesn't work now.
Thanks for your help guys!
I am hoping that you guys can help.
My spouse purchase a HTC Fuze a little while back. She used it for
a few months. She was then deployed to Iraq. The phone has been
off for the last 3 months. It was working fine when last used. Recently,
I powered it up and the touch screen is not functioning properly.
You can not use it to dial phone numbers, send texts, and such.
Basically, it does not function correctly really. When it just sitting,
it will roll through options on the screen as if it is being touched
and will not stay on the home setting.
What could the problem be? Can this be fixed? I have tried a soft reset
which hasn't worked. It is disturbing since this is a fairly new phone.
Thanks in Advance!
try re-calibrating the screen! if that fails - hard rest it.
How do you re-calibrate the screen?
settings-system-screen
I am under the settings menu but I don't see anything that says system.
Bear in mind that if I have to use the touch screen to get to it then it
would be a no go.
it's a tab in the button if you get there by moving down fron the lowests icon then you can move to system
its a tab in what button. Can you some one give me the exact step by step to get there?
try using the circular thing (joystick) to get there! i'm running a custom rom, so your settings layout may be different.
circular joystick to get where.
Can I have a step by step? I can't find system anywhere.
My touch screen displays but it does not do anything when
I touch it. I have to use the physical buttons.
to go up and down in that menu but if you have a stock rom you may have a different folder for "system", i'm not sure.
Figured out where that is now. I didn't realize that
you were talking about the start button for windows.
I went to that section and it asks you to go through the
align screen process but it does not respond to the taps
of the wand. Is that how we recalibrate?
If this doesnt work, what can be done to get the screen working?
try this: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Raphael_For_Beginners#Hardx20.Reset
hard reset your phone
If I do that, I will lose all my contacts and data on my phone, right?
How do I prevent this?
your best bet is to hope you have "PIM backup" and use it to back up everything, including custom folders. hopefully you can navigate using the hardware keyboard. (custom backup allows you to pack up specific folders and/or files). back it up to your storage card, THEN hard reset it.
also, if you have your phone's contact list synced via active sync, just hard reset and it'll restore your synced contact list.
good luck
EDIT: please delete this. double post of preceding reply.
Will a hard reset actually fix this problem with the touch screen
or this just a try it and see approach?
Contacts saved on my SIM will not be affected by a hard reset, right?
Do a hard reset then,
Yeah, if you already save your contacts in the sim then go ahead and do a hard reset. Just follow the start up procedure on the phone, hope this will solve your problem. Please let us know.

man, nobody knows for sure. it will give you a blank phone, just like the first dday you turned it on (software wise). if the screen has some hardware damage - you will know after the hard-reset. let us know how it went!
so what is actual purpose of a hard reset over a soft reset?
Why would this work to reset the screen over a soft reset?
my phone is stuck on the HTC Senses screen, and the only thing that works is the start menu, but it doesnt allow me to select anything, other than nothing else works? any ideas?
what you did before that happen ? you may install app or apply a tweek !
Did you flash another ROM before?
When yes:
Do a Hardreset use Task29 to clean all! Flash new Rom! After Flashing new ROM do a Hardreset again! At the first time on Manila Screen do a softreset.
When i did something wromg somebody can Correct me please!
Here are the link:
Task29:

sounds like the stock rom to me. mine did that all the time until i installed kumars tmous rom. or wait till the 18th and install the official 2.13 rom.
I suppose that you allready tried the soft restart (with the red button).
Remove the battery for a while and try again
good luck anyway

is there is any app enable me to make a soft reset using one of the physical buttons and this all in the case of device hang up and non response..... please answer me
i think no! But you can take off yout back cover and push the little red Softreset button!

of course i know that ... but moving the back cover alot make it more easy to open every time and in the future it may don't close ever ... so i want that app to just assgin the soft reset shortcut to any phyiscal button to use it in the case of hang up or device freezing

It is how i said! Use the little red button, because when the phone hang the hard buttons mostly hang too.
How often you do a softreset at one day??? I do maybe one in a week with the red button.
So mostly i use xda shutdown!
thanks alot for ur replays guys ... and i tryed the sloutions in the last repaly but really it didn't differ from the AE BUTTON PLUS app ,it works very well in normal mode ,, but if the device hang up or freeze don't work at all....
in my opinion there is no app even it assgined successfuly to a physical button, can do this function in the case of hanging up ..because apps is of course related to the main operating system which is already frozen ...so i think that its no way to pass throw the cycle of removing the back cover and push the red
i understand what you mean but i think you don't understand me... the case of hang up can happen to any one of us more than one time even in one day for any reason ... and to open the back cover every time to push the red button is avery harmful process to cover and may make it don't close well by the time ...so all i want is to make a soft reset to a frozen device without opening the back cover !
i understand and you are right!! But i never found tool or progs that works!
But still we can hope that anybody do it!

yes we hope that...
and thanks alot to you Dic3potr for ur interest and time...
see u later in a big problem

If you can not access phone you are unable to change the registry. Have you tried performing a hard reset? Are you able to access bootloader?

Hi Fallen Spartan, I really appreciate that you wanna give me a hand of this problem.
Actually, I almost perform hardreset, (pressing the softkey and press reset using stylus) a grey screen show up to confirm but then I cancel it and I decide to go to this forum to find a better solution before I do a hardreset. Because I want to save my email dan especially SMS.
About Bootloader, I've never try it, could it do something to access my PDA's registry? Would you mind to explain me how?

Unfortunately if your device does not boot up your only option may be a hard reset or to flash another rom. I only asked about bootloader as you need to access it to flash a rom. What happens when you try to reboot?

Thank you for responses, Fallen Spartan.
So Hard Reset is the only way...?!?!
My PDA is X1 with WM 6.1 (original ROM), after I press the power button it shows Sony Ericsson and Xperia Screen then it just get blank so I have to cut off the battery to turn it off. (normally Windows Mobile Screen)
Flash a ROM? doesn't that also unable to save my eMail and SMS, right?
Sorry if I am asking too much because I'm very new for something like this on PDA.

Yes flashing a rom is similar to a hard reset in that it wipes everything off your device and restore factory settings.
As I don't own a X1 I cannot comment if anything else could be done. But from what you say, it looks like a hard reset may be your only cure. For future reference, its always best to backup your device (contacts/emails/sms/settings etc etc) for instances like this
Okay I think the solution is only hard reset.
I'm sorry for the 2 threads because I am new member and I didn't read the rules.
Actually I posted 2 threads because yesterday I posted my problem in X1 discussion, but after a day waiting, there's no answer too. Besides, I really need my PDA back on early for my med college thing back.
Thank you for helping... and I really appreciate it much.
