Has anyone thought of trying to mathematically crack the key that Google signs all their updates with? I'm not sure of the actual algorithm used, but if you can crack WEP and WPA encryption for 802.11, we should be able to do it with enough processing power.
im glad you asked this. This was my thought process too. is there any way we can compare the test keys (since we have those) and figure out how to make the regular keys?
Good luck, let me know when you are finished
http://www.rsa.com/rsalabs/node.asp?id=2879
everybody just calm down....
wep & wpa have been cracked AFAIK by a flaw in the encryption.
I dont know what its signed with but there are many encryption algos that are locked up tighter than 2 fort knoxes, brute force is really only good for guessing humans passwords cause we are creatures of habit who don't pay attention to the security types that say we should be using randomly generated passwords of gibberish and shift and control chars along with just letters and numbers, so if you throw a dictionary at a passwordfile made by humans you'll get a few, brute forcing most newer encryption if it could be done it would take computing power of which access to it is almost impossible, the dual cores in our desktops ain't near strong enough.
like trying to knock down a brick wall with a screwdriver, It might be possible to do it but not practical...
the new dev bootloader should save anybody stuck without root, I think it was released by somebody for just that purpose, but I always have a conspiracy theory.

bhang,
the bootloader that was release was the engineering bootloader, and cant be applied to Official RC30 phones. (need recovery image with test keys to install it)

If we can Make a Virtual Farm of CPU to Factor the Keys of Google across the Country and Users we can definitely come down to 1 month or so.
I have atleast 35 PC at Service running @ 2.4 Ghz, hehe!
if 663 bits long Private Keys can be found by Reverse Logic on Public Key for 3 months, 256 bit is considerably smaller by at least 100 times,
2 ^ 662 is very Big Compared to 2 ^ 253 we have for Google Public Key.
means From First Bit to Last Bit 2 ^ 254 Combination of Private keys to be tried and then Again Checking it with Public key of Google we have.

Hey i'd say it is valid an idea as breaking the key with "phoneman" for my c=64 as suggested in some of these other ideas

i know that the g1 has haptic feed back (u can feel the button when u touch it like the verizon instinct) is there a way to turn it on
I dunno...
I posted a question about this a few weeks ago, got tons of views but nada 1 reply.
I guess you and me are the only 2 people in the world intrested in this feature, and hence since only 2 people care about it it doesn't have the feature?
Id say if it was in the exsisting firmware we'd of heard of it by now, I think it will have to be a 3rd part app.
I thought it was odd that my post got no replys, maybe I smelled funny that day?

Interested!
I too would love this feature.
It's obviously there as it shines through when you press and hold icons/widgets on the desktop to move them. Hope someone can figure it out.
2 motors
there are 2 motors in the g1 one is behind? or somewhere near the screen and another i think is located under the buttons and such so if they can be controlled independently of each other this could make for some very cool feedback, just thought Id throw this in...

Really? Wonder why they would have two motors...
Unless this was in the works at some point???
It wasn't just in the works, it's something that Google wants to use. It is a hard feature to implement, as different users will want different options (ie, some people would want it to only work for certain things like dialing, where others would want it to do it every time you touch the screen).
Id like to see screen presses, keyboard presses(just a tiny wiggle) and as configurable as possible like the above post mentioned, not just all on or all off, but at this point anything is better than no haptics.

Google is afraid of making the options UI more bloated. This is very annoying, as it will cripple the device. I'm still predicting a fork of Android.
your probably right, but we have to wait and see
I'd say a fork will happen if tmob/goog/htc don't move fast enuff on upgrades, they can push out one quick when they figure out that if you girlfriends name is 'reboot' the fone will do so if u call her, so let's see rc31 with tons of upgrades come down even half that fast...
Id like to see the ratio of G1s rooted and non rooted, I wonder just how few there are with root.

Less than a year and they are talking of Cutting models?!
Nearing, not at, so who knows how long that will drag on.
They must have something coming up their sleeves, we'll see what happens.
Whatever it is, i'm with this device for a while to come. I got some nuts to crack with development for it, and i've picked this one to stop and learn all the ins-and-outs of Android on.
The Achilles heel of this device is the lack of internal storage, (battery aside) to me it's where the ball got dropped on this one. With the 16/32 gig internal available on releasing models, that's a significant difference, and probably skews the playing field a bit.
Speaking of field, the near field technology deal is another thing that's being released that T-Mo might be trying to get devices with and capitalize on. Since Verizon dropped the ball by putting a blockage between the tech and Google Wallet (which, really, is what makes it work for point of sale payments) I can see other carriers trying to get in on it like Sprint did to distinguish themselves from #1 by offering a service they don't.
Dunno, it's really all speculation at this point in the game, but i'm with this one for the long haul. The longer I stick with this one, the quicker/easier it'll be to transition to another and i'll probably be able to pull my ROMs forward to whatever the next good hardware keyboard device is.
(really, after learning all the shortcut keys for the hardware buttons, how could you not have that?? It's like trying to type on a real computer wearing mittens without them.)
This makes me mad, but really, we don't know what exactly this means. I wish more people would have realized what an awesome phone this is.
wth? this makes no sense at all... i could see them discontinuing silders (although not liking the idea) but seeing sensation amaze and the mid/low end LG models too makes me wonder.
perhaps they are the least popular ones? sounds kinda weird tho

mtd?
Could you expand on that a bit? I skipped sleep yet again, last night, and it's just not clicking right now.
I spent the last couple of hours browsing over the forums here in our little corner of XDA. I didn't really have the head to get any work done, and so much has happened that i've missed recently. Taking a few hours to just browse around and read this or that and catch up a little bit has been helpful.
There was a time not too long ago where i'd read every post in the MT4GS forums, most multiple times. Just a few weeks float by and now there's so much I have to catch up on, there are still a few topics I need to spend some time wrapping my head around.
I'd love to spend a day just reading up on and playing with MR. Root, the download mode thread, and the various Hboot threads to just soak them all in together and see where I could help out. Then i'd love to build on that by taking a good long look at the string of OTA updates and see what it'll take to crack the latest un-rootable roadblock we got tossed. Maybe pick up something along the way to add to it all.
I dunno, at the moment sleep deprived and just a tad overwhelmed by the amount of information here I haven't had the chance to soak in yet, and all the stuff i'm trying to roll out for my ROM - and i've got a lot of threads that are getting out of date that need to be brought current, added to and finished.
This little floating session has kinda given me a good handle on what I need to do to make progress in all the aforementioned areas though, so when I sit down I can just get started instead of trying to figure out what i'm doing.
Kinda useless right this very moment, but that's okay because I got 11 minutes before I have to walk out the door. I'll turn all this over in my head during the day, and hit the ground running when I get to steal some time tonight.
Meantime, what's mtd? lmao

Agreed.
The problem is, at least in my opinion, high end devices with QWERTY keyboards are really rare. If you look at TMob's lineup, they've got the Sidekick 4G, the Cliq2, the gravity smart, the MTQ, and the MT4GS. Only the 4GS is really a high end device, with the rest either being mid-tier, or really crappy.
What's really sad is that the only other carrier who seems to have a decent variety of QWERTY androids is Verizon. Sprint and AT&T don't seem that interested (although AT&T has the captivate glide (which is about the level of the Cliq2, IMO), and I think the general perception is that QWERTY devices are for entry level texters.
I didn't meant to go off on a tangent, but I think the MT4GS, discontinued or not, is going to be the only option for QWERTY lovers for a while. I am hoping we see a MT5GS after a while, but the fact that LG seems to be making MT devices concerns me. Maybe the MT4GS was the last hurrah of the line.
I can see them getting chopped up and divided amongst the other carriers. Maybe they're getting ready for that?

MTD as i remember it from the G1 and the MT3GS is the ability to grow and shrink partitions. Using a flashable .zip and a .txt file on the Sdcard, for example, we were able to grow the data partition at the cost of cache and system (good if we were using an AOSP rom like Cyanogenmod).

Nah, not really - and intentionally so actually. In my quest to make Bulletproof be as stable as possible this is something that would throw a monkey wrench in my work at this time.
In the future it's on the list, because i'm ending up with internal space that is essentially wasted, and this probably the best way to reclaim that and make it usable.
I'm a little jealous of all the knowledge most of you have from having Android phones before - stuff like this you just know about, whereas i'd have to actively look for it unless someone mentions it off-hand, and it's hard to look for things you don't know exist.
That only means they're going to stop selling it. Look at the G2. They declared its end of life eight months after it first went on the market.

mt4gs is just a plain good phone with its camera and dual core. Its still sized as a phone should be in my book. We have true ICS working, sense ics working, and a good heap of feature complete GB roms as well... So if they dont produce something unprecedented in the mobile camera business in the following year, its a keeper anyway... i even ordered it from here europe to enjoy this amazing phone. I say get while you still can...lol
i think i figured out why t-mobile would want to do this.
the chances are that new phones with S4 snapdragons are around the corner (MWC) and with them being 28nm SoCs the battery life will be dramatically improved, which to be fair is the real downside of current phones...
still, it's very very sad to see a phone discontinued after just few months
Looks like the rumors of the mT4GS' demise were exaggerated. Looks like it was a fat finger error. There is still life for this great phone. Nothing to see here move along.

MTD is an acronym for Memory Technology Device. It describes the CLASS OF STORAGE NAND hardware, and the driver infrastructure in the Linux kernel that was responsible for managing it.
Those scripts that you remember using were manipulating the default kernel command line, in order to feed a customized PARTITION TABLE into the MTD DRIVER, rather than the "fixed" one stored within the hardware's SPL.
This does not apply to Doubleshot, since Doubleshot uses an eMMC instead, though there may be similar approaches to feeding the eMMC driver a custom partition table.

Don't most of those 16/32 GB internal storage devices LACK an sdcard slot? If so, then Doubleshot has a potential for up to 34 GB storage, which is 2 GB more than a 32 GB device...
Hi,
I am new to tablets so maybe I am shooting in the complete darkness...
Why isn't it possible to reboot TF700?
Even with root (Tasker) the reboot action is disabled.
Is that related to kernel or something else?
Is it achievable without new custom ROM?
Thanks!
If you are rooted you can. In that case, you can try RebootMenu from the Play Store (and in there are several more options to choose from as there are more apps that perform this particular trick).
EDIT: just search for "reboor widget" in the play store, and the one you find from fadroid is prety nice as well. Used it before (as many of the others).
Hi,
thanks for the tip.
Is there a way to have a reboot options inside the menu when the power button is long pressed?
I think this is cyanogen way, but i am not sure...
Not that I've found so far -- I know what you mean, as my SGS2 does that when long-pressing the power button. This would be something a custom ROM might be able to provide.

I know on my Bionic I hate going back to stock because I miss that reboot button.
Found a great solution!
Download: Elixir2
Create: status bar widget (or home screen) with reboot toggle.
It show menu with reboot, recovery etc.
Not exactly same thing as with power button (where i also like the fact that it all looks native ICS), but still a very nice solution. :cyclops:

I can't wait to get CM10 running on this thing lol. It looked great for the early stages on the Prime.
I just open Terminal Emulator and enter the "reboot" command, but then again I sometimes have "values not saved" or sth like that from No-frills CPU (which is actually bogus, as there was nothing to save, it still has the same things to load - governor & scheduler, doesn't reset the settings or anything, so probably some precaution measures in the code)

But, I think more important right now is to unlock the bootloader - as soon as possible - we just have to wait for Asus on this one, which sucks a bit. How long did it take for Prime and other transformer line products to receive an unlocker?

Not sure about the Prime, but my TF300 got unlocked about a month to a month and a half after release. Not possible. Devs have been trying to crack the Asus unlocker app for months. Asus' encryption is RSA-2,048 (that means the key is 2,048 bits long), which is almost completely unbreakable without a supercomputer to perform a ton of calculations. Even the NSA can't crack it efficiently.
For example (I researched RSA-2048 as I wrote this post), the most complex RSA encryption to be cracked thus far is RSA-768. The team that cracked it estimated that a 2.2GHz AMD Opteron with 2GB of RAM would need 1,500 YEARS to do the math required to break RSA-768 encryption.
Can you imagine how long it would take to break encryption that's almost 3 times stronger than that? Unless someone can come up with an insane algorithm to factor 2,048 bit numbers or you know a developer with a supercomputer laying around, no one's about to crack Asus' bootloader any time soon.
Edit: I should have paid more attention to the article. The team of crackers estimate that the desktop I referenced earlier would take "4,294,967,296 x 1.5 million years" to crack RSA-2,048 encryption. As terrible as a 2.2GHz Opteron is these days, I wouldn't expect much better from a top-of-the-line modern computer.
I don't think we have that much time, even with the Infinity.

I don't know if this applies to the infinity but there are other ways of cracking this stuff. For my evo 3d, the boot loader unlock method involved intentionally bricking the device to access a hidden sort of mode where the partitions could be rewritten. If I remember correctly, that bootloader was also encrypted.

Failing that, if we got root we could probably try the 2nd init trick used on locked down Motorola phones, where immediately after the bootloader loads a rooted Asus firmware, the trick unloads everything but the kernel and starts loading your custom rom. The only flaw with the approach is you're still locked into using Asus's kernel, but otherwise you're free.
That said, with an official unlock I cant imagine there'd be a ton of demand or developer interest in such a solution.

They don't like the Kill Switch because it would directly affect their insurance profits.
I've heard from thieves that Android phones are prefered to be chosen for stealing, because iPhones are easily traceable and they lock down in a way that's too hard to workaround, and you'd only need to hard-reset an Android to get it fresh for you.
So, yes, I like the kill-switch

The unintended costs when implementing a kill switch is astronomical which is why the carrier's analysis's are telling them no don't do it. Why? Money for most obvious reason and also Stupidity. A decent percentage would be of people who simply lost their phone in their house or car and report it stolen and then brick it via the kill switch... instead of them finding it later it's just money down the drain. Insurance premiums would actually be higher as the property which they are insuring doesn't have a high enough risk mitigation by the kill switch to prevent theft over the cost of having a completely bricked phone. The PR and customer service policies and security protocols are expensive.
I would say a better alternative should exist... eg biometrics so ONLY YOU can operate your phone.

Kill switches aren't actually meant to "kill" the phone. It locks up, and if you recover it, you can unlock it.
Nobody else is able to unlock it using conventional means.

Actually the company can unlock it I believe. But no security is full proof!

Sure they aren't! Bulletproof vests have limited capacity and only protects a certain region, but it's better to go in a shooting wearing one rather than not!
Catch my drift? =P

Somehow, I think that cost will find its way to the user. I don't know about you but I pay enough for service, even with a company discount. I'm not interested in soaking up more costs.

I get it but the analogy doesn't make too much sense, no offense. a kill switch is ideally supposed to be full proof and not a vest, more like a secret underground lair no one knows about.

Using my analogy, a bulletproof vest will hold most of the bullets that might hit you
But if the guy -really- want to get you, you're screwed.
Same thing. This kill switch only prevents the phone from booting or wiping the ROM using conventional methods, but if the thief -really- wants you phone, he can crack directly at the internal memory using.. Idk forgot the tool, but it's pretty expensive and mostly used to replace internal memories.
But I doubt there will be a robber/tinkerer willing to go all this way for your phone..
So, is it crackable? Yes.
Is it feasible? No.
But if you mean a kill switch, like to really break the phone circuitry.. That wouldn't make sense. Locking the hell out of it renders the phone mostly useless, and if you ever recover it, you can unlock it.
(Also, imagine this button in a country that Apple products have to say they aren't edible..)

I have something installed on my stock fold 2 that continues to connect with my hacker. Even after a full reset.

I have not. And I know who the hacker is. She is the mother of my kids and is about to loose custody of our 3 kids to me. She is also a bit coin miner that hijacks devices to do her dirty work. She is very experienced and I know this for a fact. It's her job. I just need to know how to SSH into the memory that she put the script in.

She has been scamming me and harassing me for 9 months. Trying to get me to click on a fabricated email with script embedded. She finally got her way. Took her almost 8 months the of trying.
I most definitely have never installed any remote desktop server or clients but I know she has. I have found them and Uninstalled. Numerous times. She has been deleting recovery emails and adding saved passwords all day. And that's just today.
If she's such a pro, bring it to a real geek professional than relying on advice from forum. She might have copied it to some partitions which are not formatted by default.

I think you are right. I'll have to check with the fbi and make sure they are done making a copy. Homeland already made theirs. They are classifying it as an act of terror.

And no a different phone doesn't stop her. I already did a burner phone with all new email addresses and my name no where on it

Great. Here we go. She is now back on. Messing with this forum for me. I doubt you all can see it but she is doubling up messages and moving my screen around. Crap. Oh well. If you want to email me. It's [email protected]
I did 20 to 25 full erase factory resets in a row. Still was back after the last one. I have 2 other phones she is in and 3 laptops as well.
how can you say so, plz send some screenshot. I dont think she did anything ...
I'm not exactly sure what you would like to see for a screen shot. I am running on a drive that is obviously emulated on my screen and supposedly I have 43 sensors on a fold 2. Maybe that's counting all the drivers for the sensors on my phone to connect to her phone along with all the sensors on her device. I know for a fact that at one point she had my OS running on an s21. She told me I wouldn't be able to prove it. I'm too stubborn to give up. Lol. Here is 2 screen shots. One is my hard disks and the other is my 42 sensors.
Cool story!

Yup. Sure thing. Whatever you say. It's very much real. It's actually very crazy. No one on here has offered me any real input. I'm not making this up. It is very much real. And although it is extremely difficult to do it is possible. Especially for someone that can program on the run and has professional and commercial experience. It's all good.
I'm not sure how she would manage to get on a burner phone too. I'm pretty sure it's possible to hack into a router & infect devices connected to it if you're using the same wifi network. You could try getting a new router & a new burner phone & don't connect any other devices you may have to the new router in case they're infected. And don't open emails from addresses you don't recognize. I would suggest going to geek squad or something like that rather than a forum though.
Ando do a malware scan on any other devices you have if possible. If you have another way to connect those devices to internet like tethering, you could try Trend Micro housecall. It's a free online malware scanner.

How do you know you're being hacked?
Tough to take this seriously and as fact.
But if you are, why haven't you gone to the authorities?
First of all this is fold 3 section not fold 2.
Secondly leave the phone to local police and tell them your wife or gf is hacking into your phone and let specialist att police go through your phone and if they find it's true they will grab evidence out of the phone and then arrest her for suspicious of hacking and they will use evidence when interviewing her and asking her that they found traces of her hacking the person's phone and such. Not last but least if higher up person decides to is do house warrant at her home so they will go home to her take all of her computer stuff including tablets and phones as part of investigation and they will check through all of them.
If you keep reseting your phone you are getting rid of all evidence from her and she will have lower chance of being sued in court and sentenced to jail for her criminal behaviour.
These sensors comes from your hardware nothing she's doing lmaoz. All smart phones have these sensors
