A big threat to the WM PPC platform if you ask me, MS should release WM7 ASAP!

oh my God, is this real

Caught my eye was well.
But kust keep in mind that Nokia take almost forever to actually launch the product after announcing it. So you probably won't see it till say May/June 2009.
Zuber

Only fail thing in that is that goddamn Symbian.
WinMo > Symbian.
No doubt.

WinMo rocks

yea i have to admit when i saw this on engadget and on boygeniusreport i was like dang this looks like it will be a decent competitor but Lokioki symbian has come a long way but it's not something i'd like to go back too
something like this comes out for windows mobile i would have to consider that a perfect phone
big screen nice keyboard is all i really want touch hd with a keyboard is phone heaven

16 million colors on the display ??? Hmmm, I just wish the human eye would be capable of seeing all that colors.
Symbian S60 is pretty closed, no matter what shape the body of the phone has (even if the N97 got inspired by the Tilt), it still launches on Symbian. Do I have to remind you on the non-removable bookmarks in the browser, non-removable stuff in the phone, such as NOKIA APPS and that junk and finally on the CERTIFICATION ISSUE of application?
Absolutely not an alternative to WM - working for sure but not a replacement.
Seems as well that recent Nokia phones are made for left-handed people, I noticed that they place the navigation pad on the left side rather than on the right - will be hard to get used to for me!

http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2006/JenniferLeong.shtml
some believe it's pretty close though
guess the number given is from the old 32bit colour with alfa channel

Well I must admit that's a stupid mistake by Nokia with this device, otherwise it's a true kickass device imo, I guess it won't take long untill this new nokia platform will be hacked just as what happened with S60 3rd Edition so nobody have to go trough all the certification junk.

Here's a small hands on (or maybe to short to be called that?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x88WaP3B2kU&feature=related
I like how he's moving around the widgets on the homescreen...

It´s great!, just 2 detail... it has Symbian and it´s not HTC....
(At least form me it´s very important to have the support and knowledge of this great community)
Anyway thanks for letting us know, I´m sure very soon HTC will launch something like the famous HD touch Pro
Cheers,

In some cases Symbian isn't too bad, but certificate issue is not big problem. They're breaken long time ago and you can install any app you want. Also file system can e modified.
But when you try WinMo device, you will forget all others phones like symbian, blackberry os, iphone mac os, motorola linux etc.

The iPhone vs. anything else is just too much. These two are very different devices and don't have nothing to do with each other except that they're touch screen phones. The N97 is a very beautiful phone for a lot of people, but it will require some getting used to, as opposed to the iPhone which is very easy to use out of the box, with its own set of limitations.
As said in this BoyGeniusReport article:
"So bloggers, please stop. The N97 has nothing to do with the iPhone and no, not every touchscreen device is a potential “iPhone killer”. There were touchscreen handsets before the iPhone and there will continue to be touchscreen handsets for decades to come. Apple’s mobile market share will continue to soar long after the N97 comes and goes. Deal with it."

Ms should release WM7 ASAP?
What? A device should make a software manufacturer release a software upgrade sooner. Thats like saying Intel released the Core i7 so MS better release Windows 7.....
Secondly
"World class games with N-Gage"
I cannot think of a more fail games platform (excepting gizmondo) than N-Gage... Slightly better than its revival, but cetainly no world class gaming platform.
Great phone though, even though my first though was white kaiser...

If that beast just had WinMo and that navpad thought again. I would be so sold

Not really because the N97 also contains the new S60 Touch UI platform that rivals both windows mobile and the iphone...

Nokia is stronger, while MS is bogged down.

Having just come from 7 symbian phones in a row to winmo (TouchHD), i dont really see the problem of it running symbian, certainly not from the average users perspective. Symbian is much easier to use and can do anything Winmo can, however it has stagnated in recent years being only a very slow evolution rather than a big revolution. Symbian Touch may well be the answer though, we need to reserve judgement until final units are out and the OS has been experienced. I for one disagree that Symbian is 'clunky', i can do anything on symbian faster than i can on Winmo (and an of its interface skins) or Apple.
However in not that impressed with the specs, or looks. Its not as pretty as the Touch HD and the screen is lower resolution.
No its not an iPhone killer, but only because Mac zealots will buy any old crap with an Apple logo on it however pointless, unreliable and over priced it it, much like BMW fans (1 series anybody).

I fail to see how the N97 is even slightly interesting - it has nothing that we haven't seen before. However, like the iPhone, that won't make a difference to the number sold - the brand is much more powerful than HTC. Still, HTC is making up ground, fast - I went around a load of mobile shops the other day, picking up their brochures, and was surprised to find that The Carphone Warehouse is finally accepting that HTC exists - a whole page of their brochure was devoted to the G1, Diamond and Touch HD...although all three devices failed to make it into their big specification comparison table...
Anyway, that was a bit of a random late post...

It looks beautiful....

Predictions on who will release WP5 for the universal first? (and when!)

Anyone care to predict who will be the first provider to release a WM6 ROM? T-Mobile seem to be on the ball... hopefully now that they've released it for the Dash, they'll get to work on the Universal/MDA Pro ROM
well prolly nobody will since the uni is going to be phased out

This is quite true isn't it? I've been looking for a more powerful XDA, but the Universal seems to be the most powerful at the moment? I'm not talking about the huge size semi-laptops though!
Is there anything with more power (CPU+VGA) than the Universal??
It might be old, but it's really the only type in it's class (as far as im aware - and excluding the 7500).

How about Xda Flame...?
Release Now in asia....
naaa!
they'll and have positioned wm6 for their upcoming models rather than fading ones....
I'm in general agreement about the lack of a replacement for the Uni. The Advantage is simply too large for a phone - the Uni is very much borderline, in my opinion.
If HTC could provide a PDA Phone that had a full keyboard with numbers at the top (like the Uni), a VGA (or better) screen, preferably clamshell in a smaller package, then I think it would be a winner (especially with an outer LCD to display caller ID).
If you look at the screen on the Uni, it's about 5.5cm tall by 7.5cm wide, and the keyboard is 5cm tall by 11.5cm wide. If the packaging of the Uni could be brought down to, say, 12cm x 6cm x 1.5cm (or more like the Nokia E90 13cm x 6cm x 2cm ) - then you are only looking at being marginally larger than a mass market phone like the Nokia N95, which is 10cm x 5.5cm x 2cm (roughly).
I don't have a problem with the spec of the Uni, per se. Sure, a better camera, faster processor, and built in GPS would be great - for me, the biggest problem with the Uni is it's size (and the fact it's a CRAP phone). I can impress my mates showing DivX movies, playing MP3s, playing games, Sat Nav, and browsing the net (with a PROPER browser), but after they get over the cool features, they all say "it's a bit big though, isn't it?".
A couple of friends have moved away from WM phones (XDA Mini, and Uni) because of a) size, and b) the fact that as phones, they are generally poor. If the features of the Uni could be put into a smaller form factor (and maybe improved along the way), and the phone features made more reliable, then I'm sure there would be a whole bunch of technically savy punters queuing up to buy one - I just don't think the Advantage (or Shift, even) with it's enhanced features, but bigger size, is the way to go.
Cheers,
Steve.
It's not really the size that bothers me. I'm a big guy, so a big phone kinda suits me. The only problem I have with it is the clamshell design. I can't use it with one hand! I hate it when someone sends me an SMS message on the road, and I have a soda on one hand.. I have to put the soda down just to use my Uni! If I can find a phone with a slide out keyboard, 3G, and VGA screen, 520Mhz or faster processor... I'd definitely replace this Uni.
I gust got back to my O2 Xda Exec after having a romance with something called 6915.
VGA VGA VGA VGA can't go on without it!
If the past is any indication (and it usually is), then there will never be a WM6 for Universal. Just because you think it's great - so do I, by the way - means absolutely nothing to phone manufacturers.
They want to sell phones. Why do you think they keep coming up with more and more models? They don't care about you or your OS, they want to make money. They won't make much money selling an OS upgrade. The Universal is not even 1% of the total phone market - just look at how many people post here at the Universal forum. Hundreds? Worldwide, there are probably thousands of Universal owners - a microscopic drop, compared to the hundreds of millions of other phones.
We are just like the folks who are trying to make anabolic steroids legal - they'll never succeed, because their lobby is just not big enough (while cigarettes that are clinically proven to be thousands of times more dangerous, are perfectly legal).
We, Universal owners, are just too insignificant. (Trying to get support for Universal here in Asia is just impossible - the masses want ridiculously small phones and they are happy with crappy screens.) We don't matter - who's going to bother with thousands when they can sell tens of millions? This is the curse of buying a top-of-the-line product: you are the absolute minority. Just as yourself, how many Vertu service centers do you know of?
Nobody !!!
Uni is end of life, and will probably be replaced by another modele
Lame... well i suppose i'll have to make do with a custom non-official release then i guess...!
maybe you can check the XDA Flame device. i think its a nice one, but it only got 64mb ram. if it have a 128mb version with WM6 upgrade it will be a nice successor of the universal.

What does HTC have against a 3.5" VGA touchscreen with hardware video acceleration ?

What does HTC have against a 3.5" VGA touchscreen with hardware video acceleration ?
Aren't you tired of their tiny 2.8" QVGA screens with software video acceleration ?, how many years will they keep coming up with it and we'll keep buying it like hotcakes ?
Most of us would kill for a phone with the exact features that I've written in the subject line (on top of the current features of the Kaiser/Cruise) that runs Windows Mobile, yet HTC fails to deliver it.
Why ?
I mean, there is a huge market eagerly waiting for such phone (at *any* price), the technology is here for more than a year, so what's keeping them from making it ?
The Xperia is not the answer, since it's not a 3.5" screen, and according to current understanding it does not have hardware video acceleration (again!).
If any device that carries the name "Tytn" or "Touch" automatically gets a tiny 2.8" QVGA screen with software video acceleration, maybe it's time to ditch these names and come up with new family names for products that fit the technology state that we're in, and not the state that we were at 2005 !!!
so far, we already have the 3.5" VGA screen from the Universal...I would pay 700 € for a touch cruise with the screen of the universal!!!!
How can I use a touch screen if the icons are even difficult to select by stylus???
If only someone would have made bootcamp drivers for the new 3G iPhone, so it could run WM... I would have ditched HTC in a heartbeat.
and add a micoSD card to iphone too

Note that the iPhone will also receive Java support. The iPhone 2G (!) chipset itself, as I've already elaborated on it, has 3D HW acceleration; with a MIDlet manager supporting it, the platform can become a decent gaming platform.

as of yet it's only speculation what the final software platform of the Xperia will bring

not really no... i think its a good size for a wmphone. i had the wizard -> universal and i much prefered the design of the wizard so i upgraded imo from the universal -> hermes.
these are pda phones, not a portable entertainment center.
sure it would be cool to have a better video support, and 3.5" screen would probably be cool too, but way too big after you factor in the actual size of the device.
people want smaller phones and they probably don't see a huge demand for larger screens.. honestly, im happy with the touch screen size.. i wouldn't want it any bigger as the device would have to be twice as big.
not to mention bigger power consumption, etc..
what they need to do is make better batteries.. with the technology these days we should be able to go days without a charge..
they can send spacecrafts to the other side of the universe and have it orbit another world but they can't make better batteries.
anyway, i can go on and on....
"they can send spacecrafts to the other side of the universe"
no they cant they can barely send them to the other side of the solar system
"sure it would be cool to have a better video support, and 3.5" screen would probably be cool too, but way too big after you factor in the actual size of the device."
thats about the size of the iphone plenty of people want that for now anyway
"what they need to do is make better batteries"
agree'd not just for phones but laptops too

Raphael features a full QWERTY deal and is destined to replace the Mogul. The paperwork's pretty blurry, but it appears that this Windows Mobile device will feature WiFi, 3 megapixel cameras, and -- get this -- VGA displays. Goodness! The Raphael is currently lined up to be the first out of the gate, hitting the streets in September.
Its going to be launched under Sprint
Do a search on the flame. Thats everything that you have been asking for.
The Raphael still have the tiny 2.8" screen (why ???), and we don't know if it has hardware video acceleration.
The O2 XDA Flame is a wonderful device, and I considered it before purchasing the Kaiser, but it does not have GPS. The O2 XDA Flame with GPS (maybe minus several grams) would have been a wonderful device.

If sources are right then, your request for a large screen may just be answered by HTC with not an 3.5 but a 4inch, that right 4 inch, screen in the HTC Omni.

But as people mentioned earlier in this thread, it's going to be big, and i'm not sure that's a good thing.

The Newest HTC Android Phone (kinda)

Hello everyone,
My name is Shadowline around here. I'm a freelance Photoshop artist, and HTC phone fanatic/addict. One of my current projects and latest interest is in the Google Android platform as a whole. I am a Linux Ubuntu user, and being such, seeing a platform like android come to my most loved possession the AT&T Tilt (Kaiser) and other phones to come in the future has me jumping for joy.
Now some people do not like HTC phones because of lack of support, lack of drivers, or something else completely. But I personally love the HTC phones just for the fact of how usable they are, how shiny and sexy they are, and for how many of us here at XDA are constantly adding to the feature list of our little plastic/metallic friends that follow us everywhere.
So enough of the back story of what you are here for, here's to all of those who still prefer something HTC over an iPhone anyday.
I present to you, the HTC Android Phone codenamed Centurion.

Based on a mix of the Kaiser, the Diamond, and preloaded with the Android operating system.
It only has 3 hardware buttons (plus 4 way trackpad,) from left to right, Phone Dialer Quickbutton, Move (4-way directional) select (center button,) and home.
It has a slide out keyboard, and a 1280x720 (720p) Multitouch screen that fits flush with the casing around it and is 4.5in from top to bottom. Filled with all the usual features, GPS, HSDPA, WIFI, Bluetooth, FM Radio, and 3mp Camera, plus a few additions, and is based around the NVidia APX 2500.
It is a little on the large side due to the screen that is on it.
Let me know what you think, and would you buy it if it was out today?
And what are your likes/dislikes about it? anything to improve? anything to add/remove?

lol, I still have yet to see android in landscape mode, but I might photoshop that in, and finish work on the keyboard. (at least the newer version...)
Glad everyone likes it so far. I know I've fallen in love with it and keep imagining my kaiser to look like that every time I run android.
I might also work on a side view. I've never done that before so I will have to give it a go. And as far as weight goes, I havent thought about it much, but I'd guess it would be slightly heavier than the kaiser seeing as it is larger to fit the larger screen.
very nice looking phone. i hope htc are looking!
Thank you, I will attempt to finish it, and to make one more picture of it on its side for everyone as soon as I get my PC back. It caught a cold (virus) and I am in the middle of reinstalling windows just to fix a boatload of issues I was having.
a 1280 X720 screen would be nice, but the current wide screen res for WM devices is 800 X 480 !
I voted maybe as I want a dedicated number row like the new vario 4, this setup is what is putting me off the xperia
nice topic!
I voted no .. cuz i love my Pharos and want to put Android on it (saw that TI gave a demo of Android running on an OMAP 850 device)
but in a year or a little later maybe Id definately buy one!
Very sexy...
Looks good, hopefully it will be pumped up with memory when it comes out, like 1gb RAM ,2gb of ROM and at least 8gb of storage!!
but first....TOUCH PRO

Anyone recommend a VGA replacement for my TyTN II??

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has had much experience trying to replace a TyTN II. I've been really please with it, but I don't really use the keyboard and would really love a VGA screen.
I've looked at the Eten X650 and X800 but the reviews are a bit mixed to say the least and I'm just not sure!
So has anyone made the switch from an HTC device to an Eten or i-mate etc successfully or any other similar phone? And found them to be useable?!?!
Any suggestions on a new model would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advanced,
Gadget.
You could look at the Touch Diamond. If you want a keyboard wait for the Touch Pro.
gadgetdude, similar situation here. Except I'm moving from a standard tytn to an I-mate 9502 and I need the keyboard. This is only day 2 in the switch for me, but I can say it's different. One big thing I miss is the lack of the great HTC apps like the home plugin, audio manager, and task manager. That hurts. Also, I gotta say, while the VGA is good for browsing and makes the fonts look great, it's kinda of a waste on a 2.8" screen.
This phone is a little quirky compared to the tytn, but it has some good points. I'll probably be using it until the X1 comes out. Good luck.
Now with all the VGA devices coming out, I would have thought someone would have converted the original HTC home to fit VGA. I know there is currently a version out there that works but it makes every so damn small. Imagine how the original HTC would look in VGA if it fit to the screen lke the QVGA version does.
More info...
Thanks dudes for all you're input.
Still not sure tho - the Touch Pro looks rather cool! And I guess it'll have proper VGA versions of the HTC software?!
Has anyone got any opinions on the 'joystick' control on the Eten X800 or X650 though? I'm still not convinced whether it'll be a real pain or not!
Cheers dudes!
Have you looked at the tosh g900?
This actually has the highest res screen on any windows mobile device (to my knowledge) at 800x480. Its gorgeous for browsing and looking at pictures/photo's etc. It can be a bit slow when rotating orientation but thats the only time.
The original firmware was VERY buggy and so it built up a reputation according to this - bear in mind though, it was brand new and early adoption should expect issues. This reputation is now unfounded imho. Since firmware 3.01 and above, its rock solid and I never have to reboot mine.
This is what I do on mine without any issues/crashes:
Today screen extra's -
HTC X-Button,
SPB Weather,
SPB Backup,
Rhinocode Launch Pro,
Corner-A PDA Status
Other apps installed and working -
Saman SMSDeliveryReceiptFix
Micromega MSS Converter
ZoomSMS
YouTube Player
OneNote (although, this wont pull notes FROM the PC but will push TOO the pc)
MS Voicecommand
Google Maps
Route66 (sadly, the only Satnav i've found to work correctly with its high res screen)
Oh something else this phone did first, afaik, was to have a USB hub in it! You wont believe how handy it is to plug in USB storage devices (right up to external 3.5" disks!) at work to move stuff around.
The fingerprint security/program launcher is excellent - wish more phones had it! I also use the phone constantly on 3g/hsdpa as a modem for my pc and browse the web loads. I've had to buy a 3000mamp battery which makes the phone a bit bulky but to be fair, i don't think there are many people who are as heavy users as me. I also have configured a mail2web push email and a couple of pop 3 accounts.
BUT I am getting rid for two reasons:
No built in GPS
camera is w*&k
I am waiting for the Samsung I900 Omnia which is released any day now here in England.
Samsung http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=samsung+i900&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
Tosh http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=tosh+g900&meta=
I had the eten M800 and the joystick was ok. It made it abit larger when in your pocket. Personally I like the joystick on the imate 8502. This joystick is the best I've used yet buty personally I like the 5-way pad over any joystick.
If screen resolution is a top priority, then take a look at Sony Xperia X1, it does have a physical keyboard but has a WVGA screen, thats 800 by 480. It's designed by HTC and marketed by Sony Ericsson, so best of both worlds.

and also not out until end of this year/early next year(?) .... continualy delayed product. By the time it comes out its going to be old. Compared to the G900 it offers very little extra and the G900 was out almost a year ago (and so has had all the bugs ironed out of it, something a brand new product will not be able to claim), specialy a Windows Mobile device.
you can also wait for the futur Toshiba G920 or G910

Sadly thats the case with a lot of phones. A great many smartphones out there have this issue. For example, my G900 has the Nvidia chipset in it but it aint used properly, and with an 800x480 screen, it would make a massive diference.
Why, oh why do they not give them drivers?
its not just phone company i remember the psp was like that as well...originally was a faster processor but they blocked it...off topic...anyways i seen a video of someone tapping into the graphic chip on the tytn ii maybe there is still hope...
Thanks for all the input on this.
In the end after much soul searching (well, phone searching, anyway!) I decided to go for the new Touch Diamond. Seems to fit what I'm after the most.
It's arriving tomorrow and I can't wait!!
Gadgetdude,
You have PM

Shall we get the Raphael?

Checking in!
Just to share a thought. Looking back more than a year ago, I had to spend some good effort hunting for the TyTN 1 (Got the first available variant model Taiwan CHT9000). This year alot of decent phones came out, making decisions much harder to make. I guess it is good news...
The Raphael would be a dream keyboarded WM 6.1 micro SD device but since I currently own the HTC Diamond and Apple iPhone 3G. I have to double think before getting this. May be I will have the Diamond sold and get the Raphael.
The iPhone lacks AD2P Bluetooth which is a serious draw back. The battery is non swappable, no memory card (not really a big deal cos the itunes sync is much more reliable than Active Sync ).
Feel free to share your thoughts!
Wow, you really are a "PPC-Warrior" with all those devices :O.
drivers?
Shall we get the Raphael?
Mmm that depends of the performance of the gpu,
or presence of a graphic driver!
Does anybody has information about this issue?
Does it take SDHC or just regular microSD?
takes SDHC up to 32GB
I had a dream...
What about the famous HTC Dream. its been long roumered to be out before year ends. Would it be worth waiting for I wonder.
I have so been waiting for this device to hit the shelves. HTC should have had this thing available 2 weeks ago or at least made some noise about it. Imagine if people knew about this!!
Apple sold 1 million Iphones here in Australia in the first 3 days and you cant even type on the damn thing without having to constantly correct yourself if you have fingers bigger than what my 5 yr old has and the GPS cant speak directions, no messenger and list of draw backs goes on.
I'm just hanging for this thing to arrive.
Will the Raphael have the same diamond back as the ,uh, Diamond? I read somewhere that the diamond doesn't lay flat on the table. I also read somewhere that there will be an optional flat back. Any thoughts?
The T-mobile branded Raphael has a flat backcover...
I can't really think of any reason not to buy a Raphael. This looks like the perfect device for current standards. And I don't think it has any serious flaw, which kept me from buying other devices (like the video issue on Tytn II for example).
The Raphael looks indeed quite great to me, but I like the screen size of the Xperia. Would there be a reason not to go for the Xperia?
The only thing that's putting me off is the screen size. 2.8 inches really isn't very big, especially when you're used to the Universal and its wonderful 3.7 inch VGA screen.
The xperia 3 inch screen isn't much bigger than the touch pro, plus I prefer the touch pro styling. I also wonder if the xperia's WVGA screen will cause software compatability problems?

1. maybe software problems with that screen solution
2. no video out
3. probably no (or not a lot) support by the chefs and professionals in this community for that hardware...
4. no release date avaliable

I have read the keyboard is awful. Unless they improve it before releasing, which is highly unlikely because that would change the design, I wouldn't buy it, afterall the main reason for me to choose Pro instead of Diamond is the keyboard, which is considered excellent by some people who had a chance to use it.
thanks, your arguments make enough sense to reconsider my liking. I wish the Diamond Pro would have a 3' screen ;-)
I heard that X-Peria is going to be released only in oct end , so thats quite some time whereas Raphael is scheduled to be launched on aug 5th i guess.
I am eying on the Raphael.

the physical screen size of the X1 is only 0.2" than the Raphael...
A good reason not to go the X1 is the wonderful Xda-developers forum
Another is that it's a bit delay
Personally the perfect phone for me would be a Diamond with micro-sd card support and a 3.5" screen with VGA but I sold my prophet and I can't no longer wait for the perfect phone. So, the best for now is the Raphael...
P.S. - Samsung Omnia is also a no go for me cause it doesn't have a stylus...
Actually the omnia has a stylus which looks like lipsick lol, there's nowhere on the handset to store it thought.. picture below.

Sunlight readable?
I am pretty sure I want to get the Touch Pro over the Xperia X1 apart from one thing. The reviews of the Xperia say it's screen is readable under direct sunlight. People I know with the Diamond say it is not.
I've spent the last year with the Tosh G900. It also has the 800x480 like the Xperia but it can't be seen outside. I was thinking that all these small screen high res phones were unreadable in sunlight. Maybe there is a problem with transflective displays at this pixel density?
The Touch Pro has a lot of advantages over the X1, 5 rows of keys, TV out and 640x480 screen (this is better I now know after living with the 800x480 for year and finding loads of apps that wont work). But I like to use TomTom while cycling so sunlight readable would be quite a bonus...
This phone so nearly does everything that I've been waiting so many years for, apart from decent camera with optical zoom and OLED screen. Guess I'll have to wait a few more years before I'm completely happy!
actually the diamond is the first pda/phone i have that the light sensor really works, if there is too much sun he will increase the display light, for me it is quite readable ( better than x7500 for example )
