The Newest HTC Android Phone (kinda) - General Topics

Hello everyone,
My name is Shadowline around here. I'm a freelance Photoshop artist, and HTC phone fanatic/addict. One of my current projects and latest interest is in the Google Android platform as a whole. I am a Linux Ubuntu user, and being such, seeing a platform like android come to my most loved possession the AT&T Tilt (Kaiser) and other phones to come in the future has me jumping for joy.
Now some people do not like HTC phones because of lack of support, lack of drivers, or something else completely. But I personally love the HTC phones just for the fact of how usable they are, how shiny and sexy they are, and for how many of us here at XDA are constantly adding to the feature list of our little plastic/metallic friends that follow us everywhere.
So enough of the back story of what you are here for, here's to all of those who still prefer something HTC over an iPhone anyday.
I present to you, the HTC Android Phone codenamed Centurion.

Based on a mix of the Kaiser, the Diamond, and preloaded with the Android operating system.
It only has 3 hardware buttons (plus 4 way trackpad,) from left to right, Phone Dialer Quickbutton, Move (4-way directional) select (center button,) and home.
It has a slide out keyboard, and a 1280x720 (720p) Multitouch screen that fits flush with the casing around it and is 4.5in from top to bottom. Filled with all the usual features, GPS, HSDPA, WIFI, Bluetooth, FM Radio, and 3mp Camera, plus a few additions, and is based around the NVidia APX 2500.
It is a little on the large side due to the screen that is on it.
Let me know what you think, and would you buy it if it was out today?
And what are your likes/dislikes about it? anything to improve? anything to add/remove?

And a photo of the Centurion taken from my kaiser.

U got great skills with Photoshop mate

thank you. Im glad you like it. took me abut 2 hours to finish. lol

nice project but u forget to set phone display to widescreen

omg
if this were realy... THIS would realy be the iphone killer.... for once...
a real iphone killer... lol

Very slick looks and has a killer potential! Do u have a side view on it's "dream" thickness & a guess at it's weight?

nice project but u forget to set phone display to widescreen

lol, I still have yet to see android in landscape mode, but I might photoshop that in, and finish work on the keyboard. (at least the newer version...)
Glad everyone likes it so far. I know I've fallen in love with it and keep imagining my kaiser to look like that every time I run android.
I might also work on a side view. I've never done that before so I will have to give it a go. And as far as weight goes, I havent thought about it much, but I'd guess it would be slightly heavier than the kaiser seeing as it is larger to fit the larger screen.

very nice looking phone. i hope htc are looking!

Thank you, I will attempt to finish it, and to make one more picture of it on its side for everyone as soon as I get my PC back. It caught a cold (virus) and I am in the middle of reinstalling windows just to fix a boatload of issues I was having.

a 1280 X720 screen would be nice, but the current wide screen res for WM devices is 800 X 480 !

I voted maybe as I want a dedicated number row like the new vario 4, this setup is what is putting me off the xperia

nice topic!
I voted no .. cuz i love my Pharos and want to put Android on it (saw that TI gave a demo of Android running on an OMAP 850 device)
but in a year or a little later maybe Id definately buy one!

Very sexy...

Looks good, hopefully it will be pumped up with memory when it comes out, like 1gb RAM ,2gb of ROM and at least 8gb of storage!!
but first....TOUCH PRO

What does HTC have against a 3.5" VGA touchscreen with hardware video acceleration ?

What does HTC have against a 3.5" VGA touchscreen with hardware video acceleration ?
Aren't you tired of their tiny 2.8" QVGA screens with software video acceleration ?, how many years will they keep coming up with it and we'll keep buying it like hotcakes ?
Most of us would kill for a phone with the exact features that I've written in the subject line (on top of the current features of the Kaiser/Cruise) that runs Windows Mobile, yet HTC fails to deliver it.
Why ?
I mean, there is a huge market eagerly waiting for such phone (at *any* price), the technology is here for more than a year, so what's keeping them from making it ?
The Xperia is not the answer, since it's not a 3.5" screen, and according to current understanding it does not have hardware video acceleration (again!).
If any device that carries the name "Tytn" or "Touch" automatically gets a tiny 2.8" QVGA screen with software video acceleration, maybe it's time to ditch these names and come up with new family names for products that fit the technology state that we're in, and not the state that we were at 2005 !!!
so far, we already have the 3.5" VGA screen from the Universal...I would pay 700 € for a touch cruise with the screen of the universal!!!!
How can I use a touch screen if the icons are even difficult to select by stylus???
If only someone would have made bootcamp drivers for the new 3G iPhone, so it could run WM... I would have ditched HTC in a heartbeat.
and add a micoSD card to iphone too

Note that the iPhone will also receive Java support. The iPhone 2G (!) chipset itself, as I've already elaborated on it, has 3D HW acceleration; with a MIDlet manager supporting it, the platform can become a decent gaming platform.
"and according to current understanding it does not have hardware video acceleration (again!)."
as of yet it's only speculation what the final software platform of the Xperia will bring

not really no... i think its a good size for a wmphone. i had the wizard -> universal and i much prefered the design of the wizard so i upgraded imo from the universal -> hermes.
these are pda phones, not a portable entertainment center.
sure it would be cool to have a better video support, and 3.5" screen would probably be cool too, but way too big after you factor in the actual size of the device.
people want smaller phones and they probably don't see a huge demand for larger screens.. honestly, im happy with the touch screen size.. i wouldn't want it any bigger as the device would have to be twice as big.
not to mention bigger power consumption, etc..
what they need to do is make better batteries.. with the technology these days we should be able to go days without a charge..
they can send spacecrafts to the other side of the universe and have it orbit another world but they can't make better batteries.
anyway, i can go on and on....
"they can send spacecrafts to the other side of the universe"
no they cant they can barely send them to the other side of the solar system
"sure it would be cool to have a better video support, and 3.5" screen would probably be cool too, but way too big after you factor in the actual size of the device."
thats about the size of the iphone plenty of people want that for now anyway
"what they need to do is make better batteries"
agree'd not just for phones but laptops too

Raphael features a full QWERTY deal and is destined to replace the Mogul. The paperwork's pretty blurry, but it appears that this Windows Mobile device will feature WiFi, 3 megapixel cameras, and -- get this -- VGA displays. Goodness! The Raphael is currently lined up to be the first out of the gate, hitting the streets in September.
Its going to be launched under Sprint
Do a search on the flame. Thats everything that you have been asking for.
The Raphael still have the tiny 2.8" screen (why ???), and we don't know if it has hardware video acceleration.
The O2 XDA Flame is a wonderful device, and I considered it before purchasing the Kaiser, but it does not have GPS. The O2 XDA Flame with GPS (maybe minus several grams) would have been a wonderful device.

Perhaps he has meant the HTC Omni ;-)
if I could have a 3.5 vga screen id be one happy camper.
Too bad diamond and raphael will have 2.8.
Oh well, maybe next year

If sources are right then, your request for a large screen may just be answered by HTC with not an 3.5 but a 4inch, that right 4 inch, screen in the HTC Omni.
http://mobilitysite.com/2007/07/htc-omni-details-leaked/
But as people mentioned earlier in this thread, it's going to be big, and i'm not sure that's a good thing.

Anyone recommend a VGA replacement for my TyTN II??

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has had much experience trying to replace a TyTN II. I've been really please with it, but I don't really use the keyboard and would really love a VGA screen.
I've looked at the Eten X650 and X800 but the reviews are a bit mixed to say the least and I'm just not sure!
So has anyone made the switch from an HTC device to an Eten or i-mate etc successfully or any other similar phone? And found them to be useable?!?!
Any suggestions on a new model would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advanced,
Gadget.
You could look at the Touch Diamond. If you want a keyboard wait for the Touch Pro.
gadgetdude, similar situation here. Except I'm moving from a standard tytn to an I-mate 9502 and I need the keyboard. This is only day 2 in the switch for me, but I can say it's different. One big thing I miss is the lack of the great HTC apps like the home plugin, audio manager, and task manager. That hurts. Also, I gotta say, while the VGA is good for browsing and makes the fonts look great, it's kinda of a waste on a 2.8" screen.
This phone is a little quirky compared to the tytn, but it has some good points. I'll probably be using it until the X1 comes out. Good luck.
Now with all the VGA devices coming out, I would have thought someone would have converted the original HTC home to fit VGA. I know there is currently a version out there that works but it makes every so damn small. Imagine how the original HTC would look in VGA if it fit to the screen lke the QVGA version does.
More info...
Thanks dudes for all you're input.
Still not sure tho - the Touch Pro looks rather cool! And I guess it'll have proper VGA versions of the HTC software?!
Has anyone got any opinions on the 'joystick' control on the Eten X800 or X650 though? I'm still not convinced whether it'll be a real pain or not!
Cheers dudes!
Have you looked at the tosh g900?
This actually has the highest res screen on any windows mobile device (to my knowledge) at 800x480. Its gorgeous for browsing and looking at pictures/photo's etc. It can be a bit slow when rotating orientation but thats the only time.
The original firmware was VERY buggy and so it built up a reputation according to this - bear in mind though, it was brand new and early adoption should expect issues. This reputation is now unfounded imho. Since firmware 3.01 and above, its rock solid and I never have to reboot mine.
This is what I do on mine without any issues/crashes:
Today screen extra's -
HTC X-Button,
SPB Weather,
SPB Backup,
Rhinocode Launch Pro,
Corner-A PDA Status
Other apps installed and working -
Saman SMSDeliveryReceiptFix
Micromega MSS Converter
ZoomSMS
YouTube Player
OneNote (although, this wont pull notes FROM the PC but will push TOO the pc)
MS Voicecommand
Google Maps
Route66 (sadly, the only Satnav i've found to work correctly with its high res screen)
Oh something else this phone did first, afaik, was to have a USB hub in it! You wont believe how handy it is to plug in USB storage devices (right up to external 3.5" disks!) at work to move stuff around.
The fingerprint security/program launcher is excellent - wish more phones had it! I also use the phone constantly on 3g/hsdpa as a modem for my pc and browse the web loads. I've had to buy a 3000mamp battery which makes the phone a bit bulky but to be fair, i don't think there are many people who are as heavy users as me. I also have configured a mail2web push email and a couple of pop 3 accounts.
BUT I am getting rid for two reasons:
No built in GPS
camera is w*&k
I am waiting for the Samsung I900 Omnia which is released any day now here in England.
Samsung http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=samsung+i900&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
Tosh http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=tosh+g900&meta=
I had the eten M800 and the joystick was ok. It made it abit larger when in your pocket. Personally I like the joystick on the imate 8502. This joystick is the best I've used yet buty personally I like the 5-way pad over any joystick.
If screen resolution is a top priority, then take a look at Sony Xperia X1, it does have a physical keyboard but has a WVGA screen, thats 800 by 480. It's designed by HTC and marketed by Sony Ericsson, so best of both worlds.

and also not out until end of this year/early next year(?) .... continualy delayed product. By the time it comes out its going to be old. Compared to the G900 it offers very little extra and the G900 was out almost a year ago (and so has had all the bugs ironed out of it, something a brand new product will not be able to claim), specialy a Windows Mobile device.
you can also wait for the futur Toshiba G920 or G910

Sadly thats the case with a lot of phones. A great many smartphones out there have this issue. For example, my G900 has the Nvidia chipset in it but it aint used properly, and with an 800x480 screen, it would make a massive diference.
Why, oh why do they not give them drivers?
its not just phone company i remember the psp was like that as well...originally was a faster processor but they blocked it...off topic...anyways i seen a video of someone tapping into the graphic chip on the tytn ii maybe there is still hope...
Thanks for all the input on this.
In the end after much soul searching (well, phone searching, anyway!) I decided to go for the new Touch Diamond. Seems to fit what I'm after the most.
It's arriving tomorrow and I can't wait!!

Leo vs. Mega vs. Nexus One

which one is the best overall device? Owners only please, no fanboys/trolls.
Grade the phones on this criteria out of 5(ie x/5):
OS:
Size/pocketability:
Battery life:
Processor speed:
Ease of use:
usability of on-screen keyboard:
Apps:
US 3G Support (AT&T to be specific):
Overall:
Just to kick things off im going to weigh in on my current phone, the TP2:
OS: 3/5 (using sense 2.5) (5/5 with android)
Size/pocketability: 2/5
Battery life: 5/5
Processor speed: 2/5
Ease of use: 4/5
usability of on-screen keyboard: 1/5
Apps: 2/5
US 3G Support (AT&T to be specific): full support
Overal: 3/5
Leo HD2
Leo HD2
OS:5/5 to be honest I think WM6.5 with the Sense on top is amazing never freezes on my phone anymore after installing NRGZ's Energy Rom.
Size/pocketability: 4/5 Although it's big never found it to be a problem in any pocket.
Battery life:3/5 For a smart phone pretty good but with heavy usage drops pretty quick aswel. On standby lasts for ages.
Processor speed: 5/5 everything is pretty much instant
Ease of use: 5/5 Didn't strugle with anything
usability of on-screen keyboard: 4/5 could be better still getting used to it. Theres ways of making typing easier but isnt really an isue for me.
Apps: 2/5 at the moment not much about but it's early days to fingers crossed.
US 3G Support (AT&T to be specific): 5/5
Overall:
I think this is a great phone. I must admit with the stock ROM it wouldn't have achieved the scores I gave but with a bit of messing around it's simply amazing. Also when you can play a PS1 on the go always getting a 5/5 from me lol
Haven't experianced any of the others phones but to be honest whichever you pick bar the MEGA don't think you will be dissapointed its really a LEO vs Nexus battle so if you want android Nexus WM Leo.
Hope this helps
Both the HD2 & N1 are great choices...but depends on your OS, Apps, etc. preference's.
I have the Nexus One and there's no looking back...it is so fast & cool!
Personally, I would choose Leo, but as galaxys says, all will depend on what you want/need from a device.
Have a look here for a detailed comparative:

I´m not an owner just gave this neutral full info, hope it´s ok
thanks for the thoughts. I think ive narrowed it down to the Nexus One and the HD2. Im still really torn though. I love android but i love stuff like the FM tuner and the dual flash in the HD2. :/ The other thing thats holding me back is the fact that they dont support ATT 3G. I heard about a ATT N1 but that could be months because ATT takes AGES to adopt unlocked phones, it took them almost a year for them to adopt the TP2. what to do, what to do....
Great thread so far!
I'm in the exact situation, but in London/UK
I'm currently on O2 via CPW (Car Phone Warehouse) which means I can jump to whoever, but have decided that I will buy the phone off-line to save a fair amount of money and use whatever SiM I feel fit. I'm not a greedy mobile user, but like at least anything from 400 to 1000 minutes talk on any network, similar or unlimited SMS's, and unlimited web usage.
Anywho... I was dead set on the HD2, as I'm coming from a HTC Touch HD. However, the Nexus One is almost like for like in actual spec, but of course a different and new OS to me. The main pluses that tipping the scales towards the HTC HD2 is (mainly) the larger screen, have a lot of great WM OS applications that I know and use often, M$ Office which I use at least once a week, the WM Contacts works pretty damn close to M$ Office on my HTPC (W7x64) and well lastly I know WM OS.
I'm not afraid of new that's for sure, as I been in more complicated situations and do a ROM update almost every couple weeks. I'm a heavy Windows user, but sadly have to use Mac OS on a weekly basis too, being a film editor (Mac's are NOT the best for film editing, but somehow other humans think it is).
So what is it about the Nexus One that gives it the ability to compete with the HD2? Are there plenty of great apps out there already? Does Android sync with M$ Outlook 2007 (or even 2010) perfectly OK? Is there anything I'm going to miss or moan about soon into a week of using a Nexus One?
What is your typical day on your phone 'bdk184'... what is key to you? [^_^]
I love my Touch HD, but wish it was faster and possible a better screen. The HD2 simply answers that... but somehow, I keep hearing in the back of my headphones... Nexus One. [-_-]
PS. Thanks for that comparison 'orb3000'... although it's made me think more, it's got me thinking the right questions. The Nexus One has a better colour depth... Hmm!?! [^_^]
i own the nexus one, and to be honest i do not like android... the phone is nice and all but i would prefer getting the htc hd2.
New - HTC Incredible on Android OS
@un1uncky - LoL! I think I've felt that many times too, but when I start using WinMo again, feels fine until I start hitting all the ugly GUi's again.
Hmm... another option maybe... HTC Incredible / http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...top-end-android-specs-668954?src=rss&attr=all

Have you considered trying to do a trade for a HD2 in Marketplace or a straight sell to fund getting a HD2?

Looks like apple is having the same problems as google did with the WIFI there.
You would think that apple would of done something about concidering they came weeks after google and had to of watched their presentation.
And it looks like they won't be able to show some of the key features on the iphone 4... On day one it already gets a black eye.
Move to Off Topic
Respectfully, I don´t think this information is relevant to XDA
Farm ville on iPhone
oh okay orb no problem, xda is a win mob fan site (Me too ) but same time there are some apple fan boys here. This might be useful for them ha ha
It is relevant as most users here are used to phone hardware that is far more advanced than the iPhone.
Not anymore. Yes iPhone OS still sucks and of course there is no hardware keyboard, but the new phones display alone is enough to make me a little jealous. 960x640 makes the 800x480 screen on my Rhodium feel like QVGA. When will WE get display's like this? WinMo obviously never will, and WP7 only supports up to 800x480.
I assume Android could support this resolution, but when? Imagine the HD2's 4.3" display at 960x640! LCD pr0n it would be. HTC needs to get on this quickly.
Wow impressive, Video chat over wi-fi and the app which enables this is FaceTime. Cool.
video chat and the book apps is just bs. On the other hand - the screen, the camera (+LED flash), the processor, and the antenna seem like good innovations. Hate to say it, but... Well done, Apple.

You are right mate
I really hate to sound even a tiny bit pro Apple but what exactly about this new iPhone is fail? Besides the screen size it meets or bests the HD2 in the hardware department. The 960x640 resolution is well beyond anything HTC has produced (or plans to?); considering one of the main perks of our WinMo and Android phones has been the high resolution screens this point alone is pretty important.
Imagine Android hacked onto this new iPhone. Might make it arguably the best non-hardware-keyboard phone out there currently.
Hardware keyboard is still a requirement for me so it is an obvious no go. HTC has some catching up to do now, I do hope they soon announce a new Android phone with as high of a greater a resolution (and screen size, obviously) than the new iPhone.
I agree with MooGoo, further what i have heard is this new iPhone 4G has only 256 MB Ram and dont know how they though that they are going to do multitasking with that?? Either the Phone will slow down or battery power leak or can't open as many application as on win mob. But who knows may be they have done something innovative for that too.
Hardware seems nice. Software is disappointing though, I was expecting them to more towards the cloud a bit more and maybe cut that iTunes leash.

Whats your FAV phone design!!!

Hi
I realized that there has been tons of thread about fav apps, games, phones, etc. but never about phone design. I have realized that I am not happy with my phone design, as a matter of fact there isn't any phone in the market of my design. So I have decided to draw it and talk about it (since I cant make it, lol). I am pretty sure others in this forum have prefferences for design.
DPAD/Track ball
I have moved to Android recently, bought a x10. After x10 came out I have started to note that a lot phones recently don't have dpad or track ball. I guess since multitouch screen came out they started to take out the dpad and track ball. You can see it in all of the new phones; just to name a few
Acer Liquid
Motoroi
Nokia X6
Samsung Captivate
HD2
TG01
Some HTC phones still have dpad though. It might seem very useless if you think about it. Now if you think it is useless try this, start typing and make a mistake (a wrong alphabet) but keep on typing then, try to come back to that alphabet. See how hard it is! When you are trying to go that alphabet, you tap on to the word but the cursor doesn't fall on that right place. Now if we had a dpad or track ball it would have solved the problem. I can totally understand why companies are recently avoiding those. I believe it is because, if they have to put a track ball or dpad it take up more frontal area therefore less area for screen (otherwise the phone will become pretty big). At the same time track ball and dpad both are big mechnical system so it takes volume too.
In motorola Backflip they really had an itelligent design. The trackpad in the back, I think other phones should do that too. Imagine nexus without the bottom part. It becomes small!!!
BUTTONS
Recently buttons are becoming touch-sensetive buttons. Why touch button?? They have no physical feedback! Well I understand it takes up more space and size to acomodate physical button, especailly when you have to put three or four. But there could be better way to solve this. Say you acomodate one button and four touch button. Now when you put your finger on top of a button, the LDR sences your finger then when you depress it then it fires. So it will be a plate of LDRs on top of a physical button. Check the pics for better understanding.
So anyone else has other designs??

I love the HD2 design, the pure simplicity and utility of it. Although the Nexus One is the most beautifully designed phones out there I perhaps slightly prefer a bit more industrial look.
Now if only I could snug a N1-type glowing trackball somewhere in there...
My phone has to have a portrait physical qwerty keyboard and a touchscreen, so either a front facing keyboard touch screen candy bar or a portrait touchscreen slider.
This is my favorite design, shame nothing continued that unbeatable line
Also Like Leo, Rhodium and Maple designs
I know I'll be going to hell for saying this, but the design of the iphone 4 is my favorite thus far. I noticed that a lot of smartphones out nowadays (HD2, incredible, EVO, droid, droid x, iphone 3g/3gs, etc etc) really don't have a simplistic and elegant look to them. Something always gotta stick out, odd lines, little chin, curvy body, etc. But with the iphone4, everything is flushed. It doesnt wobble, nothing is really sticking out where it shouldn't and most of all, it looks very elegant and "high-end." Sure I couldn't care less about the iOS, but I have to give props to the designers and the manufacturing processes to achieve that level of end result. I just wish HTC would pull their collective heads out of their asses and start going industrial with their design. Looking at their leaked 2010 roadmap from the beginning of the year, it seems like all their phones have the same shell but just different internals.
EDIT: of course, I'm talking about the overall aesthetic and not radio antenna placement ;]
I'm going with a slide-out keyboard.
The black-berry design with they keyboard under the screen, the keyboard is too small and hard to use.
I love my Tytn II, the newer phones with the Snapdragon CPU would be great.
Touch Pro 2 design, same idea.

You're not alone. There's so many Android phones coming out, but I have yet to see one that is able to match the aesthetics of Apple or even Nokia. I really wish there was an Android phone that looked as good as the iPhone 4.

X10 actually looks pretty damn good, up untill you put it in your hand and realize that it is made of cheap plastic. But asthetics is not everything, we need to make them usable too.

What about any new devices
Say the evo or the nexus one etc

Sent from the iPad
I think the Tilt2 would be ideal if they replaced the stupid slider bar with a d-pad and then made it slide the same way as a Palm Pre so you could one'hand text with buttons.
