Ok - the T-Mobile Vario 4 aka Raphael:
First impression: smaller and not as heavy as the Kaiser... unlike the HTC version there is not that annoying diamondshaped backcover so that it lies even on the table.
It has still no infrared - so forget about your all-in-one-remote... but: the camlight is back! yiha! Additionally, the camera is a lot faster than on my kaiser!
The usb-jack supports a video-out cable which is not included... and unfortunately it is located now more in the center of the device: so go buy a new active car-holder
The keyboard slides out now on the other side again (like Tytn I) and has now 5 rows of very touchy, respondive buttons... hey and there is a ctrl / strg button now!
The Vario 4 HAS a fm Radio and an acceleration sensor!
The rom including its TouchFlo3d is pretty fast... no comparison to my Kaiser.
GPS is on board, but didnt test how fast it gets its fix.
The display with its bigger resolution is very nice - but its a little bit reflective for my taste - and i guess placing a screenprotector on it will vanish its frameless design
Its only tri-band, but as long as u stay in good old europe: no problem All others need to wait till the end of the year when its released in U.S. as a quadband (not 100% sure about that release date). Browsing with the preinstalled opera in hsdpa is really a fun!
All in all: a very sexy device which kicks the ass of my kaiser as well as all those iphone kids!
PS: Sorry for my english
Edit: I forgot - the 10sec backlight bug is on board, but putting a mortscript into autorun will solve it

Can you please give a statement about the reception quality of HSDPA/3G compared to your Kaiser? Is it equal, worse of better?
You know there's an issue with the Diamond, but hopefully the different housing/(antenna setup?) could solve this problem for the Touch Pro.

hmm... no issues so far. I am running Tejaks V5 on the kaiser which is damn fast... but i would say the Vario 4 faster somehow. Reception is good too.
@licht77
since you didn't mention it, I take it the screen does not "tilt" when the keyboard is pulled out. I really love this feature on my kaiser.

But that's when it's vertical right? When it's horizontal the accelerometer tilts it, doesn't it?
There is no "tilt" feature for the "Touch Pro" like the "Kaiser" has.
Smaniac, I think you talk about screen orientation (landscape mode). Of course the Touch Pro rotates the screen in general, but "tilt" is something completely different.

Oh lol, now I see what you mean. You mean the screen doesn't physically rotate when keyboard is used. Yes, I knew that, and I think I prefer the 5 row fixed keyboard instead of a 4 row tilting one.
I wouldnt be surprised if it was marketed as the "AT&T Touch Pro", or perhaps the AT&T 3525 or similar.
Camera and hardware buttons
licht77,
Could you please confirm: there are many less hardware buttons compared to the kaiser, is this correct? Counting on the Kaiser there are 8 in the front (plus action and dial) plus the side's jog wheel and four side buttons (including power) and from what I saw on the Raphael there are only four in the front (plus action and jog) and the power button on the sides?
And camera: how much it differs in terms of picture quality from the Kaiser?
I thank you.

Only by vague comparison. Specs and performance are most similar to Kaiser, without a sliding QWERTY. Size is only slightly larger than the ELF (Touch). It does resemble Artemis, but the specs and features are far superior.
Has it got a real hardware touchflo screen like the original Touch?
Or is it a software one like the Kaiser?
And is the screen transflective?
Thanks.

It has the real hardware screen. Actually, it is the same size screen as the original Touch, surrounded by 'black chrome' over the entire face. As for transreflective, I believe it is backlit like the origianl Touch. Side by side, the screen qualities are identical. If I find more information on this I will repost.
Can you please do me a massive massive favour and see whether it is readable under direct sunlight (like the TyTN/Hermes) or faded out (like the TyTN II/Kaiser)?
Thanks.
i think all of htc's new screens NOT transreflective
But if it was the same as the original Touch, then it would be, and that's what I am really hoping...

Here's some photos, just in case you're doubting if I really have the device.
As you can see the front face is 'black chrome' , actually mirror like. that's why photos are taken from oblique angles.
A standard SD card adapter is shown for size reference. The phone is sleek and trim, fits comfortably in the hand and in the pocket. I use a case for the Samsung BlackJack which fits it quite well.

Wy, you are in the UK, I am in Ohio. (I leved in Leeds for three years.) Chances of having a sunny day, in Ohio, in November is quite slim, as it is where you live. I did hold the device directly under a 60 watt spot light and it is still totally visible. My wife's original Touch is viewable in high sun.
Here it is side by side with the Sprint Touch. The actual LxW of the screens look identical.
(Photos taken with HTC Athena aka Dopod U1000)
I was looking at the Wiki that's been setup for the Raphael, and I noticed there are two "editions" of the Raphael. One of them has the diamondesque battery cover with all the angles, and the other seems to have a rounder, smoother panel.
Here's the link (The first post is has the pictures, Front and Back)
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Raphael
Now, I REALLY like the Raphael. My brother's got one and I'll be getting one in a couple of weeks or so. BUT, I hate the back panel that I've seen on all the Raphaels todate, which is the Angular one.
This rounded cover appeals to me, but I haven't seen it anywhere else? Is this still an HTC Touch Pro? Is it an OEM version? Is it possible to buy that cover individually so I can replace a standard angular one?
Ciao
K
That looks like one of the rebrand back covers for the Diamond. I think the wiki author got it mixed up or something.
Its clearly a Diamond back cover because it has no place for a flash light.
Im guessing its a Tmobile styled rebrand because of the rounder top bottom and side.
But i do agree i prefer this smooth style of back plate over the diamondesc backplate.
Its a good bet that custom back panels will be developed at some point by a third party.

Damn good observation. I hadn't noticed that. So I can take solace in the fact that there's probably no lucky guy out there with a Touch Pro with that back panel, unless he exchanged it with a Diamond (I wonder if it would fit...).

Most probably too late to be of any real use, since the typically pouch life of a phone these days is 9 to 12 months max.
Eh yeah. It is a diamond panel.

Any real-life experience about the performance anybody? From QVGA to VGA the pixels quadrupled resulting in bad performance for e.g. navigational applications or any other apps which used non-accelerated graphics. This especially shows when using landscape on the Uni. (Try TomTom in portrait mode and then in landscape.)
Is there any info about the performance on those new hi-res devices?

How about the Toshiba Portégé G910? It has a high screen resolution (800 x 480) as well plus GPS built in and a fingerprint reader. Its the same type of device as the HTC Universal, even better because of the second monochrome display on the cover.
On a russian Toshiba distributers page i´ve read that some progs dont running on a 800x480 screen at all. Dont remember which prog exactly, it was an GPS Navi Prog. IGoMyWay 8 is running fine on that device.

TP indeed has a god screen. Its very sharp and clear which realy compensate for the smaller screen. After using it a day or two i didnt think about the small screen anymore. I think the screen is as good as Universals.
Also the browser Opera gives a good experience while surfing on the web. Its very easy to zoom.
I use to be a dedicated netfront 3.5 user, but nt3.5 just dosent work on TP. It makes the TP crashing every now and then. And using the bookmark is not as smooth at it was on universal. But Opera is a very good alternativ.
Decision is made : ) I will wait for htc hd... because touch pro is still not here... When it comes, there will be only 2 months to htc hd.... Touch pro is too late... The secod reason is, i think hd phones is a new area so i will use my money on a htc hd...
I'm not happy
contrary to you, i'm not happy my uni dead......
I have a hermes with me, just because it has qwerty, but the screen position is not comfortable.....because it cant be bend.....
Hey guys! this is my first time posting on this forum and i need some advice from yall. i just got the new att samsung epix yesterday. im pretty sure this is the US version of the samsung i780. im really enjoying thus phone. but i just found out that the touch pro is coming to att in a few days and it looks like a really good phone. my question is should i stick with this phone or will i be happier with the touchpro? it will cost me $100 more to get the fuze but is it worth it?
-Alex
P.S. - i typed this on my epix
It is definately worth it to switch.
Following reasons:
G-sensor
Light Sensor
Capactive buttons
Cooler looking
Tv-Out
Disadvantages:
Bigger? lol
Less battery =/ I think the Epix has a bigger battery
The keyboard is slide out (that's personal opinion)
and do I know you? Someone told me they got a epix yesterday lol
Kraize
I think i`ll buy me a TP (or x1). I just want to know if you are happy with your TP.
Thanks in advance.

I don't have a touch pro. Just recently went to a store to handle a epix but got to fondle with a fuze too . Here is the breakdown
Touch Pro (Fuze):
Video Out
G-sensor
Light sensor
TF3D
Smaller battery
$100 more
Epix:
Just US version of the i780
Not all apps are compatible with the screen resolution.
Big battery
No g-sensor or light sensor? (I may be mistaken about the light sensor)
X1:
Almost same as touch pro except the following:
No video out, g-sensor, or tf3D
Sony Panels
Embedded screen (BLAH! I hate this on my tilt as well. So it totally turned me off from the x1)
Basically, if the Epix had a g-sensor and could fully run tf3d, it would so win. I like the touch pro though. For the sole reason that the screen is embedded in the x1, I would not get it. It totally ticks me off. On my tilt, I can barely click the things in the corner cause the screen is embedded. So it's a no no for me.
Thanks for that info! Looks like umma take this epix back. Don't get me wrong it's a great device but for 100 dollars more I can get so much more with the fuze. And I don't think I know you
Hey,
I just watched the video comparison by pocketnow, and I was stunned how much slower the TP was than the Sony X1!
It's actually kind of worrying. Considering the similarity of the hardware, what could be the cause for this?
Now that TF3D can be ported to the X1, does that make the X1 the preferable device? I was really hoping to be happy with a subsidized FUZE, but I hate rotation speed sluggishness.
Could this be fixed by firmware? Or, more importantly, will it?
I have some questions just like, plus my Touch Pro disapointing me, it's too expensive to have so much bugs, problems, lags, I'm really dissapointed, i wanna get back to my old school SonyEricsson W810i (Sony ...).
I wish they will make a software update (in english and french language), to fix ALL of this!
i've had my TP for 4 days and already I'm praying for a god-damned update.
soft-resets just to keep **** running acceptably is a pain in the wang. (and yes, i do check my task manager to make sure i don't have half a dozen different thing's going)
Um. Flash new rom?
I'm not sure what you mean by slower rotation. If you mean the Gsensor rotating the screen then you can adjust the timeout of the rotation.
I think it is set to 200ms by default. So if you rotate TP there is always the 200ms delay. I've changed it to 40 and the rotation is almost instantenous now.
HTC uses always second class hardwares, but sells its products with first class prices.
where is it possible to adjust the timeout mate? sounds like a plan to me.

That comment made no sense whatsoever. Are you saying the Touch Pro is slower than the Xperia because it's made by HTC? Why don't you take into consideration that both phones are manufactured by HTC, so your comment is completely irrelevant to the discussion.

That's the truth, the only way to rotate is by mapping 1 of the buttons to screen rotation or opening the keyboard.

Not really. At least I didn't notice any difference in battery life. I think the power consumption of the Gsensor is not very high in the first place.

To clarify, I think OP was referring to this 1-day old video by pocketnow:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfBLsMl-yoI
I think OP also mentioned TouchFLO 3d on the X1, also shown in a fresh video by pocketnow:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WA-DdszBo0
No, I meant the time it takes for the screen to rotate when the keyboard is extended. Since the X1 has no Gsensor, it's impossible to compare "auto" rotation speeds.
Check out the video here:
http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=6183
It's pretty bad when it comes to important apps like Opera. And I'm kind of stunned because they share the same hardware... except the video display. And one would think that the larger display would be slower -- not faster -- than the smaller one.
This leaves me back to thinking it's driver-related (i.e., firmware). But I wonder if this is truly software-related that can be fixed, or if there is a hardware accellerator in the X1 that gives it that great switch speed.

LoL! That's funny. There's other things to consider IMO. Like the fact that the Touch Pro does have the g-sensor and it's running in the background. Also manilla and biotouch is running in the background. The person in the video says they both don't have any programs running, but what I'd like to see is how long it takes the X1's screen to rotate on those panels it uses
