New LCD for HTC touch cruise problems - Touch Cruise General

i've recently changed my lcd screen of cruise. The new screen has more brightness than the old one but lesser contrast. Is really dissapointing when you look at it from a small angle. (too bright). I sent back the cruise at HTC representative in Cyprus but they said that these are the new screens they install and can't do anything else. Anyone experienced any similar problem?
Is there a hidden service menu you can adjust the brightness?

Besides the included HTC Brightness application that is by default part of your apps in HTC Home, you can change brightness in Settings>>System Tab>>Brightness

You mean th backlight? it's not a problem with the backlight. the lcd has too much brightness and little contrast.

i've uploaded 2 photos of the cruise to see the screen

It looks like a bad screen. I would try to get them to replace it again.

I have exacatly the same problem!
where did you get your screen from?
I ordered mine from a chinese company on Ebay (please see my TC dismantling instructions here for details) and got the same results:
the viewing angle and contrast is not as it was, and I compared it to a new TC. It's hard to see something from the side, botton-angle view is blanked.
One lab's technician told me the LCD's probably not original or dropout, as "it should cost 100$ and more"...
I ask the supplier about that and they insist they checked it before delivery and may be "I'd fitted it wrong" (?!)
There is no 'special' fitting there, and only one ribbon connection, so it's either working or not - nothing to do with viewing angle and contrast.
Any help on this TC issue is welcomed

It's like Orbit II screen.. Poor viewing angle..
Screen quality is mainly difference of touch cruise and orbit II.. But it's like replacement parts of TC same as orbit II unfortunately...
Sorry for my English...

LCD Replacement
Hi also.
This is clearly a miserable story. My screen broke and I also obtained a replacement screen through Hong Kong (via a UK reseller) which suffers exactly the snags you have (dodgy screen contrast and very poor viewing angle). I think it's rubbish but what's the alternative apart from an OEM high cost fix? For info I think the poor performance in these screens is a standard feature as the first screen replacement had slightly different fixing/alignment lugs and was replaced by a different unit with the correct lugs. Both units however had identical poor screen performance. Has anyone replaced a screen with performance identical to the original??
Many thanks and great forum/very helpful thread.....

I have mine replaced 3 weeks ago due to a small accident with my phone, fortunately I have a insurance on it and I let it repair by official HTC dealer.
I donot have the issues as described here... Maybe this can help you in contacting the suppliers you used..

I have owned a TC since Feb 08. Earlier this month the top half of screen would not display. Returned to HTC USA for repair. They claimed TC out of warranty for several reasons, including breaking security seal. None of reasons were accurate, but agreed to pay approx USD200 for repair as I need my phone. Unit returned with poor quality "washed out" screen described above. Sent phone back and was told they did not see any problems. I called and directed them to HTC website so they could see pictures of what the TC display should look like. It seems repair was made with the "available" replacement screens. Requested replacement phone if they cannot repair to original quality. Called my vendor, Mobile Planet for assistance but they could/would not help. After discussing with "management" a HTC cust svc rep emailed an offer late last week to replace with a generic english phone. Email stated replacement phone would be the same model, but with different part number? HTC rep out of office to answer questions/resolve until next week. Will update post with outcome.

I had to replace my screen aswell.
I ordered the part trough an ebay seller. It cost me around 45 euro's incl. s&h.
The screen works but starts up in what's best described as "save mode" = 4 color low res.
But when the device turns into standby mode and awakes again the screen shows normal res and colors and is very much the same Q as the one that was replaced.
No contrast or view issues though....

im happy to see im not the only one with this problem.
I gave back my touch cruise to HTC because i broke my LCD.
same problem, the display has a lot of brightness but not a lot of contrast, and the view angle is poor!
i called my htc vendor and he tolds me that's the new LCD from htc.
PLUS:
My htc came back with a hole, like if he fall.... im very angry.

Wow, I am totally freaked now...
I just droopeed, ehm ok I confess, I did a Hulk slam with my HTC cruise just yesterday (personal issue...love sucks) anyways, I am about to get my lcd replaced for $130 I hope I dont suffer.
I do however need one help, it seems that my HTC is still functional, I could recieve calls, although I cant be sure of anything else since my screen doesnt display anything. The casing is all cracked and partially open .
But Windows Sync still works perfectly, my only question is: Is there any way I can save my smses? Perhaps it is filed under a certain folder?
I really need my sms it contains some data that I have not saved into notes, unfortunately I have not installed anyback up programs. I have looked around the folders on the internal memory but cant find it, Is there hope for me still?

My Mobiler
Well, here is a really nice helper to LCD-less units:
Download the free My Mobiler and use it's on-desktop-screen simulator to manage your phone.
Otherwise you can go Explore the unit with ActiveSync for any data you may need.

Just to report. I got my LCD screen replaced by Pocketpctechs.com, has the wash out screen problem.

HTC screen repair issue may be a big problem since they could not replace with screen of original quality. To solve my complaint, HTC provided a replacement phone. HTC stated it was a refurbished unit, but I think it was a brand new phone. It is my guess that for some odd reason, HTC is not able to provide OEM screens.
I do appreciate that despite all the costs and time I spent to get a solution, in the end, they did solve my problem.

Display problem (broken??) - HTC support & warranty

Hello everybody,
I want to tell you what happened to my Touch Pro this evening:
On the display (also if the device is off) appeared a small rectangle in the center (about 2x3 cm) made from bubbles. Well, not bubbles, I’m quite sure that are liquid crystal. If I put pressure with the finger the “bubbles” move and follow the pressure also out form the edge of this small rectangle)
As I can reach a decent camera I’ll post some photos of this rectangle.
The strange thing is that the device didn’t fall in ground, didn’t have temperature range; nothing hit it and so on. It was in my pocket well safe!!
If display is on the problem is quite invisible, if display is "black" or off... ....Grrrr!!!
Now, my questions:
1) Warranty is also for display?
2) How warranty works in Italy? Where should I ship the item? Which times?
3) If I have ship the device, sould I load the original rom & radio? Where can I find the rom?
Certainly, first thing I’m going to do Monday morning Is to call Italy HTC’s support number…
Thanks a regards,
Andrea
The "oil spot" problem isn't a broken display. It's the touch sensitive layer, which has been subject to too much pressure (carrying it in your pants pocket, etc). This has been happening on a bunch of Touch Pros and Diamonds. You should still be able to use it just fine, but touch sensitivity may get worse over time.
HTC may or may not be willing to replace it for you (and if so, they may or may not charge some kind of fee). Although it's just a hardware change, you should probably recover stock SoftSPL for warranty.
I have the "oil patch" problem with my Touch Pro. Unfortunately when I first noticed, HTC would not fix it for me, so I still have the oil patch on my screen, although everything still works fine so far. If it gets worse, I plan on buying a replacement LCD/touchscreen and replacing it myself:
http://mobile.brando.com.hk/prod_detail.php?prod_id=03799
I've noticed this problem on quite a few of the original touch / elf / 6900 phones, including my old personal phone which I used in this condition for many many months without every having any actual issues. It is strange but like you said: pretty much not noticeable when on and probably just best left alone unless it really bothers you.
I have the same spot but it is not causing any problems that I noticed but there is many who have this spot in the diamond forum.
today i also noticed this on my touch pro..i sort of fell asleep on it and i think i might have messed it up
i can see that oil spot that you mention but only if i tilt the phone at a certain angle and only if the screen is off. When the display is on i can see everything properly
The problem:
Touch function is messed up badly..i tested in notes application and sometimes when i press at a point X the dot appears somewhere else on the screen...Internet browsing is a pain in the ass like this...
i also noticed one thing..i took the stylus out, put the phone next to my ear and i tapped at the area outside the oil mark. I get the normal soft sound and pressure feeling as it should be.. When i do the same at the oil spot its rather hard feeling and sound..
i will contact HTC on monday and see what they say about it..
otherwise i will get a replacement for 159euros (inc installation) from pdatech...
Happened to my Fuze...
Happened to me too 60 days into owning it. I carry all my phones in my pocket, but have never had this problem. I brought it into the at&t store that I got it at and they never saw it either (it is only a few months old for them and have not had any complanints yet). They were going to replace it for me but were sold out. They had me call the warranty department and they replaced it with a refurbished unit (although all of their refurbished units are brand new as of this point because the phone is so new for at&t).
If you got your phone through at&t call warranty support and they will swap it out if the unit is under warranty (which being 2 months old at this point it will be).
This happened to my Fuze as well. I tried to call AT&T support and visit a corp store but they ruled it as physical damage, thus voiding my warranty. Apparently the "crystals" under the display are cracked/damaged, causing the rectangle. Who knows.
has anyone successfully sent a touch pro raphael to HTC repair shop to be repaired under warranty with this issue?? its really bothering me that i can see it and i feel like it will affect my phone eventually...
Add me to the list too.. I am going to try to get mine replaced through Sprint if it gets bad. I hope they know this is an issue/defect and not something like water damage

I believe this is a design/quality issue. I posted about this same problem here some weeks back. HTC will not repair under warranty, paid in total 77 pounds to get this fix from them. I believe they are aware this is a problem because in the warranty book, screens are not covered even when its not your fault. They call it Newton ring .
Funny thing that a lot of people started noticing this issue very recently: as if a cheap component came to the end of its life cycle.. propably in my head only..
Anyway: I noticed this on my TP a few days ago and I'm going to drop my phone to the local service. It's the second time in just over 4 months.. crappy build quality really
also: Diamond users have had the same issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=439410
Local HTC service got back to me: they're insisting that it's a 'mechanical fault, not covered by the manufacturers warranty'. Then it gets better: the estimated repair cost is 275 euros (that's roughly 355 USD) for the replacement of the display and front cover.
Naturally I'm going to challenge this as the oily patch appeared over night when the phone was sitting on a table.
not that im questioning what happened but personally i find it difficult to imagine how it can get the oil spot just by sitting on the table :S
normally you would expect this after exserting enough force on the screen. Personally that was my case. I sort of fell asleep on the phone and might have hit it on the metal edges of the bed..anyway i got mine replaced from pdatech.nl for ~170euros including installation costs..
Well if I had to venture a guess, I'd say that the 2h navigation on the night before took its toll on the display and during the night it just spread out and became visible..
how dodgy. I have been getting this problem, but funnily enough I thought it was due to air pressure, because it happened to mine when i was on the plane.
anyway i was just coming home from someplace real hot (40C), and it kept giving me the screen alignment problem for a few weeks, kept thinking i was pressing the top right corner of the screen regardless where I pressed. However, found that putting slight pressure on the screen for a few hours (i.e. a weight) fixed the screen alignment problem temporarily (for a few hours).
Anyway, just came back on the plane from someplace real cold (-10C), now the problem has ceased.
???? air pressure? or temperature variation?
I don't have the screen oil spot problem you guys have however.
Here's to it lasting a little while longer...
I asked for a more detailed report of the fault and the service just said that 'It's a fault defined as OOW (Out Of Warranty) by the manufacturer' and that there's nothing they can do but charge me for the repair. Note: they're not even putting the blame on me saying 'abuse/misuse'!
Now I'm going to go to the seller (expansys) and hope that they have some interest in keeping customers happy (and maybe have more business with them in the future!) and make things right (=fix my phone or replace it).
Wow, and I thought I was the only one. I've noticed the same oily stain after falling asleep on the phone. I've had it for a month now, and I've gotten used to it. It does not seem to affect the sensitivity or the accuracy on the touch screen. At least not in my case.
Does anyone have any experience replacing the touch screen by themselves? Is it a complicated operation? I would greatly appreciate a 10-step-guide on how to replace the screen, if it's going to be an issue over time.
disassembly guide
check out the wiki of xda click on service manuals and look for raphael. its on page 19 of the PDF
I noticed this issue on my Touch Pro today morning! I used my phone last evening and everything was fine. Now the touch screen doesn`t work at all. Great.
Same issue
I have also been victim of the oily patch.
I have had the Sprint Touch Pro since November and it just happened within the past 2 weeks.
Maybe this is due to not putting the screen protector on the phone.
I'm going to try visiting the Sprint Repair Center to replace it and then put the InvisibleShield Screen Protector on it.

Identifying a HTC clone ... and fixing it.

I recently bought a HTC touch phone and i suspect it is a Chinese clone but i really dont know. They all look the same to me (the phones). After searching Xda it appears to be like the HTC Elf100 and dopod S1. Is there a definitive way to tell the exact model? The phone was purchased from a website called Deal Extreme.
I would like to know if it is possible to extract the ROM from the phone and save it onto my computer for back up.
More importantly (and the reason i am here) is that the screen is malfunctioning in that the colours are all very faded and there are black lines across the length of the screen wherever there is text or icons. There is a severe flicker when the backlight is set to anything other than full brightness. For the first three days the screen was crystal clear and the colours very vibrant. The only changes made were installing some third party softwares and applying a screen protector.
I have uploaded an image here:
http://www.ibj.co.nz/vlt/CamScreen.jpg
I am trying to isolate the problem down to software or hardware. If it is hardware i will order another screen or digitizer and replace it and if it is software i will begin to look down that path, perhaps flashing the unit with more up to date ROM.
Tell us one thing, is the serial number in the following format? -> HTxxxGxxxxx, if Yes you have have original HTC Touch, if No, you have a nice Chinese clone.
If the back of the device underneath the battery looks like attached picture, you have the clone on your hands. you will have to ship it back to DX for replacement or repair.
Regards
Just from looking at the front of your phone, yes you have a clone
Yep CLone
OK Thanks for assistance. I have a clone here. DX offered to send me a replacement screen if i can locate one on their website. I would have thought they would know if they have one in stock but apparently not.
Can anyone think of a way to find what sort of a screen i would need to replace this one? I am told that the original HTC screen will not do, perhaps different pin outs.
Replacement screen
So i guess i am just sh#t out o luck then? The retailers can't find a replacement screen. Can the ridgy didge screen be modified to fit a clone?
Don't know. Since it's a clone they can have used whatever LCD, with whatever flex connector. But one thing for sure is that you wont be able to use original HTC Touch LCD.
Best option is to ship back to DX for replacement.

Advice needed from people who've repaired TP screens

Ok so i walked into my desk at work last week and cracked the LCD - i had already puchased a new digitiser as my screen was getting pretty scratched up so i figured i'd simply buy a new LCD and take the phone and new parts round the corner to my local phone shop who were happy to replace my screen and return the next day.. great.
Fast foward and now i have a BIG problem. The new LCD doesnt seem to work once the phone has booted. SO, when you turn the phone on you get the usual windows boot screen with the rom info in red in the bottom corner (im using Monx's latese 6.5 rom). After that though it all goes Pete Tong, when then alignment wizard starts the screen goes nuts, flickering like an old TV and not displaying a steady image. The guys at the store say the phone is damaged from the knock to the screen however before I did a hard reset and removed my sim and SD card the parts of the LCD that were still able to display the today screen etc were showing everything correctly and flicker free and even allowed me full touch control with the stylus.
I basically need some advice from people who know a thing or two about replacing Touch Pro screens. Despite what the shop guys say i suspect that my screen is not compaitble with my Touch Pro which is originally a UK Vodafone but i now live in Canada and got the new LCD from the States. The person who sold me the LCD said it was compatible with all Touch Pros & Diamonds, but then he would say that wouldnt he!
My options are either buy another LCD and hope that does the trick or bite the bullet and get a new crappy canadian contract and a new handset. please help me ive tried the search and cant find anything that helps me and im desperate for a solution!
Cheers
Its a LCD issue what you got, my guess is that the person at the store either gave you a faulty one or its a duplicate lcd, also cleaning the LCD connector with alcohol would be a good idea. Its very rare that in the Diamond/Touch Pro category the connector to get damaged.

[Q] Warranty Replacement Screen

Since I bought my One S, I had been having problems with occasional screen flickers and insensitive areas. However, the insensitivity could be fixed by turning my screen on and off... an inconvenience, but manageable, I thought. Then, the insensitive areas began to spread from just the 'c' and 'app drawer' areas to the 'settings' and 'ring pull' areas... So I finally called T-mobile warranty replacement.
I just got the replacement phone today. So far the touch is working 100%. The only problem is the screen's contrast is completely different. I compared the black test image from lagom.nl, and all the gray squares are completely indistinguishable (save for the bottom row) on the new screen while the old screen was able to distinguish the top, bottom, and half of the middle two rows.
Question:
1. Could T-mobile warranty replacements be refurbished with a lower quality screen?
2. What could have caused this difference in display?
Thanks in advance.

I don't think the screen would be different. Refurbished usually doesn't mean new parts. They say at replacement you get a brand new device. I'm pretty sure they are refurbished though they won't admit it.
What you should do(if you are in good standing) is call retention and let them know you are very unhappy with the replacement and won't accept anything but a new sealed device.
I was extremely unhappy with my amaze and they ended up giving me a one s. Then I had issues with the SIM cover and they replaced it with a brand new black(s4) one s.
It's worth a shot

Ebay replacement screen issue

Hello, I recently replaced my cracked screen with a new lcd (including frame) from a fairly reputable seller on ebay. The procedure generally went smoothly, I dont think I did any mistakes. So, the new screen looks good apart from a small issue.
When I swipe at the screen with my finger, some faint parallel vertical lines appear momentarily at the place where I swipe and they fade out quickly. They are more pronounced on gray or other midtone backgrounds, not so much on white (havent tested black). Also, I think the moisture in my hand affects how much they show, when my fingers are slightly damp, the lines tend not to show as much, but I can't say there is a certain pattern for sure.
It isnt a major issue, I suspect something with the digitizer and not software related as it appears on both safe mode and recovery.. I am just wondering whether I did something wrong with the installation of the screen or whether it is a defective/low quality screen or digitizer. I appreciate any help.
Not sure what you mean. Provide a video?
Also, was the replacement labeled as original OEM or just some random one?
Have you emailed the seller and explained the issue. If they are reputable, then they will either know why or replace it.
Thanks for your answers. The screen was labeled as very high quality replacement screen. There were other sellers that labeled theirs as original OEM in the same price range, but from a research I did, it looked like that they are all pretty much the same in that price range (55-70 pounds), whether they say OEM or not. So, I went with this seller, because his shipping was more convenient. I havent contacted them yet since they are most likely off for christmas and I havent decided yet whether it's worth the hassle of putting the broken one back on, sending this one to the UK from Greece and wait for a new one to come.
I uploaded a video that demonstrates the issue. I hope it's clear enough (better watch it in 720/1080p). Thanks for the help again.

Could be something wrong with the glass pressing against the panel.

I wasn't expecting to be able to see anything but it is very noticeable. Strange issue, I would be in contact with the seller personally.
Thanks for the answers. It is indeed a bit of a strange issue and no matter how much I searched online, I couldnt find anything similar. My return period has expired, so I think I will see how it goes and if I can tolerate it. If not, I might send it back during the warranty period.
