Outlook/Direct Push and GPRS 3G Connection - Touch Cruise General

Hello all,
I use the Outlook to access my mail, via exchange. I have a question about this. I use Direct Push mail with it so I can receive all mails as soon as I get them on the exchange server, but when I delete them on the Polaris, they still remain on the server. Wasn't it supposed to delete it on the server too? Do I need to Send/Receive to delete a msg from the exchange inbox?
Is there a more efficient program or way to use with Exchange servers? Maybe a hidden feature I didn't find?
About the GPRS Connection, I'd like to know if it's normal for the GPRS Connection (with 3G) to be disconnected every time I have a call (ingoing or outgoing), and then it tries to connect after the call. How can I prevent this?
Thanks in advance.

it depends on the way you set up the behaviour of the push mail function.
In your case, I assume the mail will be delete the next time your device will be synchro with the server (so the next time you receive a mail, or the next time you send a mail, or the nexdt time you click on send/receive).
Some times when I have a call, my 3G connection are deactivated, and switch to a classic GPRS connection.. But I never experience a full deconnection during the call.
But assuming you activate the push mail, the connection should be automatically reactivated after your call, so it is not a big issue (we are talking about an interuption of a few seconds).
Hoping this help.

You're right in everything you wrote. It reconnects after I end the call. I just have to be careful not to hit the "End Call" button when it's reconnecting, or it will not connect.
Thanks for the feedback.

unfortunately, I think mail status (delete, unread, read) is not a criteria to force a synchronization. the only criteria to run a "real time" synchro is when you receive a mail or when you send a mail (take a look in the planification options in ActiveSync).

Yes, you're right. Or at least I can't find any other way.
I used to own a Nokia and had the Exchange activated, it would sync all the times. If I deleted a mail on my device, it would sync with the server and delete there too. That's the reason I was asking.
Thanks for the replies, zen.

pushmail/exchange confusion... driving me nuts. arrr

Hi. I've been using mail2web services for a while. They were great until the last couple of weeks, now their service goes down like a pro.
So.. I started to look at alternatives.
fastmail -- nice account, IMAP.. but for the life of me I couldn't get it to "push" email to my phone. It supposedly supports IDLE, but I couldn't figure this out. Am I missing a setting somewhere? The thing never pushed mail to my phone at all.
1and1.com -- slightly more expensive exchange2003 account. No .CAB for the activesynch settings, they have to be input manually. No problem, until I set "as arrives" in scheduling and it asks me for an SMS gateway. Uh-oh. Im on Softbank and I know nothing about any gateway.
this post:
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=410683
explains that Exchange works by sending a header SMS to instruct the phone to synch. However, mail2web never asked me for my provider or any SMS gateway.. so if this is how it works how did mail2web do it?
If anyone can shed some light on how to get this working properly, or where to find more technical details on how this stuff works I'd be a lot happier. As it is I'm having to check gmail periodically.
Thanks for your help!
I think your getting mixed up a bit sir, mail2web uses the push feature because it uses your GPRS connection to talk to it. If you ran a netstat program to see what the device is currently connected to you will see an active connection to mobile.exchange.mail2web.com, as soon as an email arrives it signals activsync on your device to synchronise your emails, the device simply tells you that there is an unread message. The connection is always on. If you have GSM signal but no active data connection you wont get your push emails.
The connection is always on but stuff is sent to and fro only when there is a change on one end (for example if you add a new contact.....it will sync with the mail2web server and the new contact will be on there aswell).
and FYI...mail2web has been a bit unreliable lately but its ok at the moment!?
Thanks for the info.
So..... do you have any advice as to how I would set up activesynch the same way to connect to 1and1?
When I set it up it asks me for the gateway, otherwise won't let me choose "when arrives" for scheduling, could this be a setting on my side, or a setting on their servers?
mail2web may be OK now, but for a non-free service 1 whole week of unreliability is enough for me. Who knows how long it'll be up before problems start again.

mail2web seems back to normal service today... Nearly
But yes one week without push... including sometimes when your email just do not even reach your acount and bounce (ie they're just lost...) it's not really what we need
I hope in the future more and more providers will propose Exchange 2007 accounts by default...
I am also a former m2w user. canceled my account in fury after indeed more than three weeks of problems, topped with a week off.
Fortunately my school's email supports ActiveSync so I moved there.
I cannot recommend any particular commercial replacement.
I've heard a few folks using Goodlink, but I am not convinced.
Push email is no joke, once you have it and rely on it, and it goes bananas, the harm is real.
Do we know when mail2web is planning on using exchange 2007??

Turning off automatic mail deletion on Send/receive in WM6.0

Hi people... WM6.0 is bugging me - every time I send/receive it deletes all of my old mail... Is there any way to turn this off?
Thanks in advance!
No ideas?
I have the same issue with GMAIL, but could not find a setting on the device to stop the inbox deletes. Also, the gmail pop3 settings online are not that clear on what to do?
I have the same problem, and the only way I found to keep my important mail, is by moving them to the spam folder...
If you configure the settings for the mail account to download "All messages" then they won't get deleted unless you delete them manually (in which case they'll disappear next time you send/receive). Just make sure you've only got what you need in your server Inbox....or you've got an unlimited data plan as it may take a while to download them all!!
By default, new mail accounts are setup to download "messages from the last three days" IIRC, which is why messages older than that will disappear from the phone's Inbox on a send/receive.
HTH,
Mark.

gmail has a problem that it deletes any read mail. Kinda sucks, but it happens
In the Gmail options (not on your phone, but on the webpage) you can set it to retain a copy of the mail after POP retrieval.

It's not a GMail problem, this happens with all my POP3 accounts. My retrieval settings are already on All Mail - any more bright ideas?

[Resolved] Block mail settings - if I lose my phone

I just wonder if there is a way of blocking/preventing other people with different sim-cards to access my mail that I configured on my phone?
Example:
I configure my mail on my phone with all settings like username and password. Then I accidently lose my mobile and someone finds it. But this guy who finds it want to use it for bad things. He can't get my PIN password so he puts his SIM-card into my mobile. Therefore he can access my mobile and go into my mail that's already been set up. So now he can read everything in my mail and even send mails from the phone.
How do I prevent this?

Change the password on your e-mail account if you know that your phone is lost. He cannot see it or change it from the device, so once you change it, he will not be able to access it anymore. Also, you can set a personal password lock, which is independent from the SIM card. Finally, there are a couple of apps that can do certain things if your device is lost/stolen. They are in the D&H section.
Thanks But I tried to whatch my received mails with my sisters SIM-card, and it worked :S so if I lose my phone... the person can read the mails that I've received... and that's not good. Do you have any solution?
Btw, I'll check the D&H section!

Mostly everything you can use will depend on whether the device is connected to the internet, which might not be the case depending on the knowledge of the thief. You could probably add an app for tracking in case the phone is lost or stolen though (if your device is GPS capable, that is).
One more thing..
When I want to receive my latest mails - like the one I've received within three days ago. I go to my inbox and select receive/send. But what it does is that it recieves every single mail I got in my "real" inbox. And that's not what I want. I want it to just dwnld the newest messages. Because if this works... I can manually delete my messages in my mobile Inbox, so it doesn't store the mails to long. Because if I lose my phone, the theif will only have accsess to around 5mails

I think that there is either a setting or an app to automatically purge the saved e-mail if they are in the device for +3 days or so. I will look into it.
Thanks, but do you know what's the problem is with that I get all my messages from my inbox when I press "receive/send" in my mobile inbox? Because I've set the setting to just get the mails from 3days..
just a thought, to prevent that you could just put a password on your phone? So the person who takes it cant access your phone let alone the mail etc.

Had already suggested that, but the OP seems to have different concerns.
Okay, but how do I enable such a password?

I am not sure whether I really understand you but as suggested previously why don’t you use “Auto lock” with a password.(settings--->Lock..)
You can set after how many minutes or hours the device will be locked. After that time run up you need to input your password in order to able to use or see anything on your device

Hmm, it's more like an app that does the following:
Locks the phone (require a password) when turning on the phone. In that way, it doesn't matter if you have an extra SIM-card, because you can't access the phone. And then it's just a hard-reset that will restore the phone, but then my problem is solved - all my private files etc is gone with the wind
exactly! Even better if you use Microsoft exchange server mail then you don’t need to wait until the guy make hard reset you just simply remotely wipe your device
Use the lock function so go to start/settings and look for lock. Choose either 4 digit or more complex and set lock time as you wish. - i dont really knwo what more you would want because even if u switched sim, you would still have to crack the lock code.
Haha, so it was that simple ^^
Sometimes easy settings seems to be complicated but thanks for your replies
But the question about my email still remain :/
When I press "send/receive" my phone downloads every single mail. But when I go to Inbox-Tools-Options-My Account-Edit Account Setup I've already set the "download message" to from the past 3 days. What's the problem?

No probs, easiest solutions are always the best ones
mm not sure why that is doin that, setting the period should only download the relevant days...... what email provider u using? pop3? gmail? all work fine with me and i use exchange too.
If you cant sus it out, i would delete your email account, soft resest and set it up again.

mm that is strange, with those setting you should not be getting older mail?
Might sound odd, but have you tried a different setting, so like 1 week, or 1 day mail, save it and soft reset?

Push mail on WiFi

I just set up my hotmail account as an "M$ Exchange ActiveSync" account in the default mail application. I entered m.hotmail.com as server (Found this using Google), set Peaktime from 00:00 to 23:59 and enabled push mail for peak time. Push mail seems to work properly while I'm on my data connection. But when I turn on WiFi to connect to my home router, it doesn't work anymore. I don't get the push service. The mails come in only when I open the App and it syncs. Same for Gmail, even though a mail on my Gmail came in while I syncedwith the default app. Is there any workaround for this? I read about the WiFi policy when the device is in standby, and I found that my setting was already to never turn it off. Can somebody help?
Please do also report if you have the same problem or if another Push solution for Hotmail works for you.
Does nobody here use pushmail?
I think I'm having a similar issue with my phone. I only use GMail, but even then my messages show up sluggishly when I'm connected to WiFi.
I have a GMail notifier extension in my browser, so emails consistently ping when my browser is opened. Unfortunately, the very same notification will take a couple of minutes to show up on my phone.
Don't know if that's a helpful problem report. Hopefully there's something stupid that we're missing that's causing issues?
I use Advanced Email which is great. works really well.
I have my wireless on all the time at work and at home and get push emails from hotmail fine.
So i would say maybe its the software.
Advanced email is very good. I use it alot because it can also get folders you create and not just the inbox.

[Q] Email

Does scheduled email check work while on wifi only? I booted up phone without sim, connected to wifi and set to check email every 10 min. I did get 2 emails but no notification and no unread email count. Only when I opened email app, notifications worked and email count appeared.
bump bump bump
You should use Push email really.
Push email does a http request to the server with a long timeout, 30 mins I think. When it timesout it does another. So if you're getting no email, nothing is really going on. When you get an email, the http request is responded to telling your phone it has an email.
If you have it polling every 10 minutes, imagine an hour you get no email. It connects to the server, does all the checking, 6 times an hour.
In the same hour with Push email, your phone does two http requests that timeout.
The amount of data transferred, and the impact on battery, etc, is much worse with polling than Push!
Not a lot of people seem to be aware of that!

Are you serious about this? I thought PUSH mail will drain battery quicky than does you checking every 5/10mins.

I think it will drain it faster polling every 10 mins. I've got 2 email accounts atm on push and they don't seem to have any negative impact on the battery. In fact when I had my work exchange email account on and set to poll every 30 mins the battery was a lot worse.
Its still doesn`t answer my question - why on iPhone I had unread email count on the MAIL shortcut, but I don`t have one on Sensation? Are there any special settings I need to do? Maybe it doesn`t work just on WiFi?

Nope, as long as your phone is connected to the mobile network then the mail server is pinging back to the phone to say "I've got mail for you". You only transfer the data for your mails in total. For the polling method, as well as transfering the mails, you're transferring data every time you poll and there's no mail.
Just googled to see if I could get the definitive answer and it's amazing how many people still say it the wrong way round, "don't use Push it'll drain your battery".
I'm hoping some expert can back me up on this though, so I'll say I'm 99% sure to cover myself..
To the OP, sorry, I was kind of answering your question in a roundabout way - why not try using Push email to see if it works that way? You'll save on battery life as well.

That mail shortcut just fires up the app. Once in the app, press menu key -> more -> Settings -> Send & Receive -> Update Schedule to see if you are on push or a poll.
There's also Notification Settings which says whether to notify you , play a sound, vibrate, etc.
