Any way to get WM6.1 Slim Edition v2.2 working on a G4? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Hi
I've recently got a wizard G4, and wasn't impressed with the default O2 OS that came with it. I quite liked the look of the slim edition v2.2 ROM (link below)
WM6.1 Slim Edition v2.2 - as fast as it gets
However after reading the G4 flashing tutorials, I was made aware of the fact that any ROM with IPL/SPL included is unsuitable for G4.
G4 users must be very careful with the ROM they select. The ROM has to be "G4 Safe", in other words contain only the OS, Radio, or Splash Screens. If you flash a ROM that contains IPL/SPL information, your device will become bricked(unless you flash the IPL/SPL using SoftSPL first --See Removing HardSPL tutorial below). If you're not sure if a given ROM is G4 safe, ask.

The Slim Edition ROM has some bundled software, but I'm not sure if thats IPL/ISL. Could anyone tell me if its suitable for a G4, and if not, if theres any chance of modifying it to become suitable?
Thanks in advance!
PS. I know this probably doesn't deserve its' own thread, but I didn't really get a reply when I asked on the official thread. Also, sorry if I'm asking stuff thats been asked lots before, I am new to this, and have done my best to read up on this.

Worked fine on my G4 wizard...

on my G4 it worked fine too

Remove the IPL/SPL, if any.

Thanks a lot for the quick replies, I'll have a go at flashing it...

More Problems
I have got HardSPL (the warranty's run out) flashed, however, the actual WM6.1 ROM update tool returns error 300, saying it cannot update my PDA, a newer utility is required (I can't remember exact text).
Could this be to do with me using ActiveSync, which loses the connection when the phone restarts?
Uploaded are the Wizard Service info log and the error
Thanks for any help!

Finally, got it to work using the 2.5 version of RUU...

Where is the latest Faria's Rom ?

Hi, I tried for many times to update my qtek 9100 with some of farias rom, as the last I tried, farias [the real thing], without any good results... The only one that is working now on my phone is Wizard love.
Someone knows where to find the last issue ?
Thanks,

I thought faria's the real thing was the latest faria rom... Oh and how are you trying to flash the rom and is your device a G3 or G4?
If your device is a G3(1.xx or 2.xx or 3.08) then you will need to CID unlock the device before you can flash anything with RUU
If the device is a G4(2.xx.0001) then you have 2 options. You can either use shelltools to flash, or use the-equinox's new SoftSPL which temporarily CID unlocks the device thus not voiding your warranty and allows you to flash any rom with RUU.
This is the link to what I believe is faria's latest rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297762
Thanks for your reply.
I guess you are right, the last version was crossbow, but I found many of them on a ftp (ftp://130.89.126.174:2311/Wizard/Roms/WM6 Roms/), and this is the last reference I guess.

I tryed two methods.
Fisrt, using the package application utility.
Second, using shelltools, uploading the .nbf file.
My device is a G4, and as far as i read I dont see any issues on upgrading using CID-lock devide.
When I flash using shelltools, Do I need to clean the current device rom, or just send the new one should work ?!
Before flash I did a backup using wizard service tool, and it generates some files with .fls extensions. Is it possible to put then back in order to have my phone to the original state ?
And the last question ( )
Temporary unlocking using your suggestion (SoftSPL) could damage something if the process kill before ends ?
Thanks for your time, answering that.

Follow THIS tutorial, you'll do fine.
Post any questions related there, there's no need for new threads.
Thank You.
Latest Latest Rom
To be completely accurate, Faria's latest latest ROM is in the kitchen he released (sticky at the top of this forum). This is a minor upgrade to the Real Thing ROM, but is worth checking out, plus its a great way to get started with cooking your own rom.

Give this a try. It temporarily CID unlocks your G4 device allowing you to upgrade via RUU method instead of shelltools. It is much more effective at flashing roms as I was never able to flash faria's rom with shelltools but it finished after 6 minutes with the RUU.

Thanks all for the prompt response.
I did the process using sspl, and for the first time I could get to the final process....

Faria's most recent ROM
The Faria kitchen was released on 4/20/07....
but Dr Puttingham mentions in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=310816
that this more recent ROM is from Faria "with regards".....which was on 6/7/07
I'm a big fan of Faria's ROMs and Dr Puttinghams instructions/tutorials!

Place for Newbs to get Started-Want Tilt to Look Like Touch

Any advice? I am new to this whole thing. Have done some overclocking and what not on my PC, but this is a whole different game.
What types of things can I do without risking really f'ing things up?
What I hope is the simplest things I was hoping to do was to make my TILT screen look like the HTC Touch.
I thought about downloading Dutty's tweaks, but I am thinking I might be out of my depth starting out.
I would like to learn some things, but don't want to annoy the veterans that are here. Any direction would be appreciated.
Thank you.
What you could do is read, all the post people have put to do exactly what your asking. All the info is there you just need to search and read or use the wiki.
Have fun

Thank you.
Download and run HardSPL on your phone from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
Then choose a dutty rom to install, since you are on a tilt try:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345385&highlight=dutty+tilt
This is all you have to do to have a fully functional htc looking rom with the touchflo cube with the newest drivers and radio for AT&T. I am using this one on mine right now. This rom has everything that you will probably need already installed. Anything else will just be for personal preferences. This rom has an advanced config program which is great but also download kaisertweak for some nice settings.
Thanks for keeping it simple for the newb. I read a couple of things about the "radio" portion being an issue. What does the "radio" tweak mean and will a HARD RESET fix problems if I decide to revert back?

The radio that comes with this rom will be the one you need. A hard reset only reinstalls the rom you currently have on the phone so to revert back you will have to choose another rom and install it. As long as the rom you install is an AT&T one or one made for the tilt then you won't have to do anything with the radio. If you change and use an HTC ship rom or one of dutty's other roms then you will have to download another radio and install it. Radios self install the same way as roms do.
This is the wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
On this page is the link to the ftp area where you could download the older radio if you decided to go to a non tilt rom.
Did you have any keyboard problems when doing the HARDSPL and installing the dutty rom. Also, which of the dutty roms did you install? Beta 2?
I am still on the Beta 1 and have been too lazy to changeover yet as Beta 1 is solid.
If you really want a good "How To" check out Mr. Van X:

Every place he says "Hermes" you just think "Kaiser" or "Tilt". All the steps are the same. It is a great walk-through. He has you download the .net framework first. I know I didn't have it. Then he steps you through hardSPL and finally the ROM.
A few weeks ago I followed this exactly and have never had any troubles. Why a walk-through like this is not in the Wiki for the Kaiser/Tilt I have no idea. It'd be a lot more helpful to newbs (like myself) than the forum fav response, "Read Dammit".

Why don't you write an entry for the wiki? That's how the Wiki is updated and maintained, by contributions by everyone.

I just used HardSPL and Dutty's Hybrid Rom No 5. I'm not sure what the difference is from his Tilt Beta version but I tried both and decided to go with the Hybrid. Point is, until last night I did not know what a Rom was. I read the forum and followed the directions. Here are links to what I used.
HardSPL (you need to do this first). Everything you need to know is in the first post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
Then find a ROM. I downloaded several including the stock ATT rom just in case I decided to go back. The steps for loading a ROM are almost the same as HardSPL, just follow the directions on the screen.
This is a link to Dutty's Tilt Beta ROM (all you need is the link to the ROM at the bottom of the first post). If you want to try Dutty's Hybrid ROM, scroll to the 3rd post made by username "alltheway" and click on the red Hybrid No 5 Rom link in his signature block.

It is very simple to do.
Do I need to SIM Unlock?
I have been reading through the posts, and I can't find if I must SIM lock my phone before trying to install Dutty's ROM. On my 8125 the general concensus was unlock both. I don't have any need to run other radio's on my phone, and I won't be traveling out of the US.
Also I am currently running SPB Pocket Plus 4.01. Should I do a hard reset before trying to CID unlock and load of new rom?

Fix for freezes WWE official 6.1 (only if using HardSPL) - Confirmed

Hi !
By freeze i mean: tap the screen or press keys and nothing happens for 2-5 seconds. This would happen to me about once every 2 minutes.
This is what i did:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335568
I used the SPL extracted from the nbh of the official wm6.1 build which reverted my SPL back to the official one. You won't be able to flash a custom ROM anymore, until you install HardSPL again.
I have been using the Kaiser for about 30 min and no freeze.
It was not my idea that it was a SPL issue, someone mentioned this in a thread about the leaked WWE 6.1 (which is identical to the official WWE one)
edit1: This only applies if you installed HardSPL
edit2: Thanks to shafez for being the first to think about this. Apparently i was trying it at the same time as him, so i didn't know he also posted the results, that's why i started the thread as soon as saw the fix worked.
did you notice any other improvements like speed?

I don't doubt that you are experiencing better behavior, but I would like to get some more information on this from a developer who actually understands the mechanics here.
I am certainly not that person, but as I understand it the SPL is a bootloader. As such, I'm not really sure what it has to do with operation of the OS after the OS is booted.
In addition, everything I understand about the pagepool, and changing the pagepool, I have a hard time understanding how a different SPL is going to change the size of the pool.
Again, I don't doubt your experiences, and even if we get 100 people saying this worked for them I would like to understand why this would possibly work.
Any actual developers have any input? (please, my amateurish suppositions are enough guesswork, if you don't have educated answers there isn't need to postulate).
Can you upload the 6.1 spl here and this should work on an MDa Vario III right?
Don't really know much about all of the techie stuff but I have also found that by reducing the cache sizes to "advised" and the PP to 16MB I do not experience any freezes. I have been running Dutty's test and also tried it with both L26 Roms and it works every time.
Just flashed the official new rom om my brand new phone and I´m not having any freezing issues. The phone was not hardspl as it was new out of the box.

I´m not into the workings of the device and not a hacker/programmer of any kind but what comes to mind is that if there is some incompability with the bootloader and the OS and the bootloader loads the OS the wrong way it seems natural to me that you will get errors that may result in strange behaviours of the OS. It may not be a large error and therefore the OS loads but with faults resultning in "bugs".
or its simply a bad rom. I will refrain from going to hardspl and testdrive the rom for a few weeks and se if I can come up with som errors.
can someone maybe upload german fixed version? thank you!
16 mb page pool really helps!
Very easy to do just using xda page pool patcher.
Do not forget to click "Save" button and then "Analyse" again to confirm .nbh file was updated successfully.
n00b question:
What is a nbh and pagepool? Will this affect the performance? I'm trying to learn as much as I can.
I don't post a lot, and I do not know the technical ins and outs of the SPL, but here is a theory. While browsing one of the threads regarding the video acceleration drivers, someone mentioned that the SPL could have something to do with initiating video acceleration. If this official release was supposed to have any sort of graphics fix, maybe something exists in the SPL of the official release that doesn't exist in HardSPL, and that is the reason we are experiencing the freezes. Just a thought.

I only changed pagepool to 16MB. Did not touch SPL (I think I'm using hardSPL).
Follow up: still no hang/freeze.
To sum up:
after flashing some 6.1 cooked builds around here, i noticed the device would stop responding, i tried two of Dutty's, one Vista, the Diamond V1, maybe some other too. They all had this issue, so i just waited for the official one, hoping that the freezes would be gone. They weren't.
So here's how i fixed it:
I flashed back the original 6.0 official ROM and saw there were no hangs / freezes. So the HW was ok.
After that i flashed the official wm 6.1 from HTC. Then i followed the "Idiot steps" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335568) without any shortcuts (first 14 steps, i skipped step 15 ) and used the 6.1 ROM, not the 6.0 ROM to obtain the nbh file. Flashed the official SPL and hard reset.
All is well now (except i have to remove HTC Home and soft reset to use iGo).
No freezes for a day.

Just one question. What Country ID I should set in htc rom tool, to make it look exactly like UK htc branded kaiser?

Few Questions After Reading the Wiki Tutorials

I have an AT&T Tilt and would like to flash the firmware to the HyperDragon III which can be found in this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397121
Following the directions in the TILT Specific Wiki, I flashed the HardSPL which was version 1.57.502.2. This was the file listed in the thread for the TILT.
Checking out the other threads in this forum, it looks like there are now HardSPL version in the 3 range like 3.07 3.28 3.29.
I'm confused if the file listed on the TILT Wiki was correct or if I actually need a different HardSPL file.
My other question is about Radio. I have read all the information about making sure that the radio on my phone will work with the rom that I would like to install.
What I cant seem to find though is how to check what radio my phone is currently using ?
Any help on this would be appreciated.
I know that answers are probably in the forum somewhere I just can't seem to find the right search string to pull it up.
Use the HardSPL found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396922 (this is a sticky on the ROM dev page).
Here is a guide for Radios: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=393182 - basically flash a radio onto your device and test it out. Different radios will give you better/worse battery life, affect connectivity, GPS, and the like. Performance varies by region and what ROM you have installed.
Here is another link you may find useful: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_Radio
Hope this helps.
So the newer versions of the HardSPL have the same benefits as the one I installed said it did ? Such as being able to go back to older, original roms and helping to protect against bricking ?

The 3.* versions of Hard Spl do the same as the 1.* versions - they allow you to flash cooked Roms. The 3.* have better compatability with WM6.1 than the 1.* versions, thats all.

Another question, I am trying to flash the new 3.56 HardSPL before installing the new Rom.
Do I need to use the SoftSPL even though I already have the 1.5x HardSPL installed or can I just run the update like normal.
Also, when trying to run the update like normal using the KaiserCustom RUU File, I run through the wizard and after getting my phone information it correctly shows that I currently have 1.5x, however it says that I will be updating to 1.00.000.0
Is this normal ? Or should it actually show that it is updating to 3.56 ?
yes thats normal one quick thing search for jockeys security unlocker that has saved many headaches
youtube solution
Hi, the youtube video below walks you through it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezZ-2lHi3T8&NR=1

Flash - What Went Wrong?

I've always fancied flashing my Kaiser (V1615) with a new ROM, but was always nervous because I wasn't sure of the process and didn't want to risk bricking the phone as well as all the effort needed to get everything back on it I needed. Well, a few days ago my old Kaiser met the floor and an untimely end. So I decided to take the risk and put a new ROM on it and decided on the latest Dutty WM6.1 ROM.
I read all about flashing on here and made as much sense of it as I could. Thing is, I'm very technical in general, but not very familiar with Windows Mobile or flashing. I found there was lots to read, but it was all written with an assumed level of knowledge and understanding of terminology. As a result I found it quite hard to understand. I took the plunge anyway and started, but things didn't work out as expected and I didn't understand why.
I'm not trying to be critical of all the work a lot of people have put into the documentation that is available online, it's just that when I originally approached this with zero flashing experience I found it difficult and confusing to understand. What I really needed was a concise and basic introduction to flashing. I've now been through the process and after re-reading the documentation it makes a lot more sense.
I worked out you need to run something called HardSPL before you could flash a new ROM. I'm still not sure what HardSPL does apart from CID unlock the device, but what does CID unlock mean?
I ran HardSPL v1 and it started ok, but then I ended up with a white screen. At this point I already wished I hadn't started, but no going back now. Is it known why some phones white screen? Turns out it's a common problem, so followed the instructions to recover. All was well again, but still with the original ROM.
I thought I'd be brave and stuck with it and this time tried JumpSPL1.56-KAIS instead of HardSPL as recommended on one of the tutorials. This went better and I ended up with the Tri-Color screen. I plugged my USB cable in and USB showed on screen.
Next step I thought was to flash a ROM onto the device. I ran the Dutty updater on my PC and all started ok, but when the update got to 18% I received a communication error. I tried to recover using the updater, but the same thing happened. At this point the phone wouldn't boot, so I was more than a little worried and wishing I hadn't started!
Found something that described several options for recovering from this problem. I decided to try and flash the device back to the original ROM from Vodafone. When I eventually found that ROM I ran JumpSPL again, got to the Tri-Color screen and ran the updater. This time the update completed successfully and the phone rebooted and was all working again.
I decided to leave the device as it was and started customising it myself. I'd still love to put a cooked ROM on there, especially if it helps with performance, but after the experience above I'm not very confident.
Can anyone tell me where or what went wrong? I'm going to get my old Kaiser repaired and want to try again on that phone.
My flashing routene (not ideal but it works for me)
1) run the first part of the Kaiser SIM/CID Unlocker & Changer
2) after device reboots, hold camera button and restart to check SPL
3) Flash rom/radio of choice
4) Follow HardSPL v3.07, v3.28, v3.29 and v3.56 by JockyW 's second guide "If you have problems with the above process, try this:" and flash my 3.XX SPL of choice.
Sam
Wow, I need a cuppa now
I'll go through 1 at a time... (and Sam has answered some questions already)
-CID unlock means that when the phone is loading a new device into the ROM the Carrier ID check is removed, each Mobile phone carrier has a different CID in thier OS ROMs. Unlocked means you can flash a OS ROM from any carrier or a cooked OS ROM from this site.
-The Jump SPL should only be used for replacing the SPL. Do not flash anything other than SPL's when at the Jump SPL (or SSPL). OS and Radio ROMs should be flashed from either in Windows Or By Manually Entering the Bootloaders. More info on SPL's is here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=SPL Questions?
-Have a look at flashing from SD Card to avoid communication problems, http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=KaiserSDFlash
-The most clear instructions can be found here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser#ROMx20.Upgrading
Hope this helps.
Dave
Thanks for the advice, but this is what I normally encounter when I read something on here, which is advice which no doubt makes perfect sense to the author or others experienced in flashing, but usually raises more questions than it answers in my head.
For example;
1) run the first part of the Kaiser SIM/CID Unlocker & Changer
Click to collapse
What do you mean by the "first part"? The thread you've linked to doesnt really explain what I'm downloading and doing.
2) after device reboots, hold camera button and restart to check SPL
Click to collapse
Ok. I get this assuming you mean the device will reboot automatically and I restart it to check the SPL version that gets shown on the boot screen, but why do I need to do this?
3) Flash rom/radio of choice

So at this point I can simply plug my device into my PC and run the ROM updater I've downloaded. Working out what rom/radio version to download is a minefield in its own right.
4) Follow HardSPL v3.07, v3.28, v3.29 and v3.56 by JockyW 's second guide "If you have problems with the above process, try this:" and flash my 3.XX SPL of choice.

I thought HardSPL needed to be run before I flashed? Also, why the different versions? Which one do I choose?
BTW, not trying to moan about everything, just posting my experiences to find out where I went wrong, but also highlight some issues hopefully other flashing newbies can relate to and authors of tutorials can draw some useful feedback from.
Only one question, do I need to CID Unlock before using Jump and HardSpl or, the Hardspl does the Supercid ?
I'm not referring about SIM since I don't care, for now
With WM6.1 - Oficiall HTC ROM
Thanks
Thanks for that one dave, on reflection i kinda missed the whole point of the thread, and as for the majority of the stuff you posted i didnt undertand that to begin with.
Also, DaveTME, if you are wanting to flash a custom rom to youre kaiser. from my experiance and from the number of times ive seen this happen. i advise against asking for reccomendations(sp?) (not saying you will but its worth saying) try a few roms out and decide from there.
Also another thing to note. if you flash to WM6.1 remember to use a 3.xx spl otherwise you'll encounter a few problems with youre device.
Sam
What do you mean by the "first part"? The thread you've linked to doesnt really explain what I'm downloading and doing.

download the Kaiser unlocker and run the first stage of it, the program is in the linked thread.
Ok. I get this assuming you mean the device will reboot automatically and I restart it to check the SPL version that gets shown on the boot screen, but why do I need to do this?

No, after the device reboots, youre given youre Rom, Protocol and Radio. if you hold the camera button and reset you'll get youre SPL displayed, youre looking for 1.01 olinex to be shown

1) Yes, just run the RUU with youre chosen rom and thats it
2) its not a minefield, just make a decision on what rom you like and flash it. theres nothing to stop you flashing another one.

The 1.01 SPL will allow you to flash a cutom rom. following that you need a 3.xx SPL as they are designed for windows mobile 6.1. as for yure decision. i use 3.29, yet other users have had better sucess with 3.56. Most rom chefs will say which SPL they reccomend anyway with their rom.
-CID unlock means that when the phone is loading a new device into the ROM the Carrier ID check is removed, each Mobile phone carrier has a different CID in thier OS ROMs. Unlocked means you can flash a OS ROM from any carrier or a cooked OS ROM from this site.

Great. Thanks for that. Makes perfect sense now
-The Jump SPL should only be used for replacing the SPL.

Ok. I think you mean that the SPL is a component on the device? What is the difference between HardSPL and JumpSPL?
-Have a look at flashing from SD Card to avoid communication problems, http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=KaiserSDFlash
-The most clear instructions can be found here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser#ROMx20.Upgrading
Hope this helps.

Read the "SPL Questions" Wiki Page, it is all there and fairly clear.
