Place for Newbs to get Started-Want Tilt to Look Like Touch - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

Any advice? I am new to this whole thing. Have done some overclocking and what not on my PC, but this is a whole different game.
What types of things can I do without risking really f'ing things up?
What I hope is the simplest things I was hoping to do was to make my TILT screen look like the HTC Touch.
I thought about downloading Dutty's tweaks, but I am thinking I might be out of my depth starting out.
I would like to learn some things, but don't want to annoy the veterans that are here. Any direction would be appreciated.
Thank you.

What you could do is read, all the post people have put to do exactly what your asking. All the info is there you just need to search and read or use the wiki.
Have fun

Thank you.

Download and run HardSPL on your phone from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
Then choose a dutty rom to install, since you are on a tilt try:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345385&highlight=dutty+tilt
This is all you have to do to have a fully functional htc looking rom with the touchflo cube with the newest drivers and radio for AT&T. I am using this one on mine right now. This rom has everything that you will probably need already installed. Anything else will just be for personal preferences. This rom has an advanced config program which is great but also download kaisertweak for some nice settings.

Thanks for keeping it simple for the newb. I read a couple of things about the "radio" portion being an issue. What does the "radio" tweak mean and will a HARD RESET fix problems if I decide to revert back?

The radio that comes with this rom will be the one you need. A hard reset only reinstalls the rom you currently have on the phone so to revert back you will have to choose another rom and install it. As long as the rom you install is an AT&T one or one made for the tilt then you won't have to do anything with the radio. If you change and use an HTC ship rom or one of dutty's other roms then you will have to download another radio and install it. Radios self install the same way as roms do.
This is the wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
On this page is the link to the ftp area where you could download the older radio if you decided to go to a non tilt rom.

Did you have any keyboard problems when doing the HARDSPL and installing the dutty rom. Also, which of the dutty roms did you install? Beta 2?

I am still on the Beta 1 and have been too lazy to changeover yet as Beta 1 is solid.
If you really want a good "How To" check out Mr. Van X:

Every place he says "Hermes" you just think "Kaiser" or "Tilt". All the steps are the same. It is a great walk-through. He has you download the .net framework first. I know I didn't have it. Then he steps you through hardSPL and finally the ROM.
A few weeks ago I followed this exactly and have never had any troubles. Why a walk-through like this is not in the Wiki for the Kaiser/Tilt I have no idea. It'd be a lot more helpful to newbs (like myself) than the forum fav response, "Read Dammit".

Why don't you write an entry for the wiki? That's how the Wiki is updated and maintained, by contributions by everyone.

I just used HardSPL and Dutty's Hybrid Rom No 5. I'm not sure what the difference is from his Tilt Beta version but I tried both and decided to go with the Hybrid. Point is, until last night I did not know what a Rom was. I read the forum and followed the directions. Here are links to what I used.
HardSPL (you need to do this first). Everything you need to know is in the first post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
Then find a ROM. I downloaded several including the stock ATT rom just in case I decided to go back. The steps for loading a ROM are almost the same as HardSPL, just follow the directions on the screen.
This is a link to Dutty's Tilt Beta ROM (all you need is the link to the ROM at the bottom of the first post). If you want to try Dutty's Hybrid ROM, scroll to the 3rd post made by username "alltheway" and click on the red Hybrid No 5 Rom link in his signature block.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345385
It is very simple to do.

Do I need to SIM Unlock?
I have been reading through the posts, and I can't find if I must SIM lock my phone before trying to install Dutty's ROM. On my 8125 the general concensus was unlock both. I don't have any need to run other radio's on my phone, and I won't be traveling out of the US.
Also I am currently running SPB Pocket Plus 4.01. Should I do a hard reset before trying to CID unlock and load of new rom?

duttys dual touch rom v2

hi all what happens if the rom installation goes wrong??
i am going to use duttys dual touch rom v2.
if you follow the simple guides floating around in the forums you cant really go wrong. Remember once the rom has installed to do a hard reset to get duttys rom working at its best.
You could brick your phone.

If I remember correctly there was a thread which discussed devices that would not flash even though all of the instructions were followed. I think it had something to do with devices that had a certain date stamp on it.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I did a quick search on the forum titles but didn't see anything that rang any bells.
Dont worry yourself over nothing
Just follow the very simple steps as mentioned above. Been flashing for a couple years now and as long as you install the hard spl and follow the steps I see very little that can go wrong. Plus you really dont need to start new threads for a question, just ask in the existing thread or do a bit of research but like I said I wouldn't worry about it.
Make sure you install Hard-SPL first, then just follow the guides in this forum and you should be fine.
go for it bro would be very nice but the closest is dutty,s rom which is winderfull
Which SPL
Hi, I have researched a fair bit on flashing roms, and I am very newbie so please be easy. I just got a ATT Tilt and realize you have to flash Hard-SPL then dutty's rom correct? But which Hard-SPL do I use. I see there are different versions, is there any difference and will tehy all work? Thanks guys.
Use this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679.
It is working well on my Tilt . Just read the instructions carefully and almost* nothing can go wrong. Then flash the ROM of your choice.
*never say never ;-)

how to flash the Kaiser (TILT) ROM

Hi everyone,
I have a refurbished ATT TILT (my 4th TILT), and the warranty is over, so I would like to entertain the idea of flashing some cooked roms to my phone. There are so many posts about the ROMS and how to do it and I just have a few questions:
1. What is the best ROM to use on a locked ATT TILT? I have not unlocked my TILT and don't really have a need to, so what are my options for a good ROM to use (NON ATT).
2. What software is best to use to flash a ROM from Windows Vista? I've seen several tools available and would like to know what the different opinions are on which one to use.
3. Is there anything else I should know about flashing a cooked ROM on a locked ATT TILT? I'm new at this so any advice would be helpful.
Thanks
Best I can tell you is read these threads even if they don't pertain to you at the moment and read the stickies and the wiki listed at the top. tells you everything, from what is a good radio to flash to what rom, what apps, etc. all there for the taking!
Absorb! absorb like a sponge!

It's all about taste, check every link that has a ROM and look into the screenshots, all the ROMS on this section works on your tilt of course you have to install HardSpl first. Check also this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=362987
#1 is use hard spl (as they said above)
#2 verify the radio you have is compatable with whatever ROM you choose.
i just installed dutty's v4 with radio 1.27.12.11 and the ROM is great. the different radio ver (i had 14.09 before i think) is much much better as well. I'm almost 2x better reception with the radio (or its all in my head LOL)
as a noob to this site myself i can understand you are overwhelmed, but take a day or so and READ all you can; including how to recover from a bad flash (read: hard button combo for boot loader) and some issues ppl have with certian rom's.
good luck!
Read the stickies...

I am new, recieved my Tilt 3 days ago and have flashed 2 roms already. It is really easy once you understand the basic steps.
1) Flash HardSPL (mine went to the solid white screen, it freaked me out but the sticky that has the fix works and is easy to do).
2)Choose your ROM, if you have AT&T, I suggest you look at one that has an AT&T version, it takes care of alot of the manual setup for you. (Alex's and Q-MObile have AT&T versions) I am using Q-Mobile 1.2 and am loving it.
3)Add any extras you want. So far I have added GoogleMaps, HTC Home, TotalCommander (registry editor).

Brainless & Confused

Sorry guys & gals. New to this but cannot get a handle on the right thing to do. Can anybody help? Yes have read the basics but its not basic to me I am afraid.
I have got an HTC TYTNII from Orange. Need to unlock the sim card lock. Then would like to clear out all the Orange rubbish with a rom flash I think its called (havent got all the words right just yet). However as I paid a few quid forthe phone do not really wish to stew it!! If you know what I mean Harry! Cannot find hardspl etc on so on have ativesync fitted and running. All help greatly appreciated.
This webpage has a ton of files that have been extremely helpful to me so far...
http://duttythroy.lives-in.eu/
dont really know how to help
but
if you want to use hardspl is on the sticky thread
activesync can be downloaded from ms depending on the os you are using.
if you want more help tell me what you need and i will guide you
satiros
Lots of reading
I suggest you do lots more reading.
However, as a starter, go to :
http://www.imei-check.co.uk/kaiser-unlock.php
Pay for the unlocking service.
Then, and only then, install HardSPL
Following that, you can install any ROM you like (for Kaiser / TYTN II)
If you install a ROM based on Windows Mobile 6.1, chances are you will have to install a new Radio coding too. You should install the one for UK Vodaphone on :
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_Radio
Don't worry, it works on Orange, I have it on mine.
I recommend the Alex ROM even though it is still a Beta version, it is very good.
After you install the ROM and done a hard reset (keep both soft buttons pressed down whilst pressing the reset button with your stylus) install the radio, then do another hard reset.
Bingo, it's like a different phone.
Thanks for the info have carried out the first bit awaiting reply. Where can I download HardSPL please? Having looked at your recommended ROMs Which one?.. wow some cooking I can see I will be Flashing all day!!

if you cannot look & find it right there in one of the sticky threads of this forum ... I'd suggest you do not attempt any flashing to your device !!!
as some of those stickies contained mandatory informations that you need to READ THOROUGHLY !!!

How should I choose a ROM?

I've very new to all this, having used a non-PDA/smartphone (SE637) for many years before purchasing a Tilt. While quite PC-literate, I find myself very intimidated with all this. I read as much as my mind allows before requiring large quantities of diet-coke -- then I need a nap to calm myself down from the soda before reading any more, or my head explodes.
I think that I need a new ROM, but I'm not sure why! Everywhere I read, that's what I'm told.
This community is very knowledgable and seems very helpful. As this appears to be more for developers than users like me, I'm hesitant to ask my question for fear of offending a developer, which isn't my intent. I'm looking for information that might assist me in choosing which ROM to use.
I suppose that I want the phone to run faster, be easier to use/see (I don't see as well as I did 50 years ago... ), and have the latest of whatever is the best at the moment, spending as little as possible in the process. A truly never-ending story...
Before you start flashing decide what's important to you. Are you looking for a certian look & feel? Is fuctionality more important or do you want spped/stability?
Then research the different Roms, most include feature lists & screen shots in the first few posts of the thread.
So what it really comes down to is a lot of reading.
Oh and be sure to HardSPL your device BEFORE doing anything.
Also, like kyphur said read and do the hardSPL first but for me I found it's most helpful just to try some. Download a few, flash them give it a whirl and see what you like. Once you try a few you'll find options and programs you love and will start looking for roms that have what you need and more importantly what you don't like. And if you never find anything you love then start cooking. There are a lot of great wikis here to guide you step by step.
Hope this helps.
Start with Wiki first. Once you hardspl, load your first rom. You will find how easy it is and start to flash more roms like crazy. Experiment, and then you will find what you like. After flashing your first rom, you will realize how much better your new rom is compare to the stock rom.
just start off by choosing a few roms...then read about it as the chef would describe their rom...see which one fits u most...then make sure u read teh wiki and faq before u actually start ur flashing...to make sure nothing goes wrong...and then if that doesnt fit u..try another rom..but all the roms here...are better than stock for sure
I knew this wasn't going to be easy... Rating system anyone? I suppose I'm also nervous about doing a first flash. What about CID and SIM unlocking?

HardSPL removes the Carrier lock (CID) from your phone. As for SIM unlocking, I haven't bothered yet because I don't travel anywhere that AT&T doesn't provide service.
Once you've done your share of reading, if you are still confused about what type of ROM you are looking for, check out whatever the latest Dutty release is at that point in time. Dutty's Kaiser ROMs are probably the most popular on XDA.
I use a [somewhat] clean ROM myself, with the bare minimum preloaded. This way I can install what I need, and not worry about wasted space for programs I don't use.

however, for Christ sake, please have hardspl installed.

Is there a Tilt-specific version (currently with ATT's latest released ROM) of HardSPL that avoids all the headaches I'm reading about?
I'm still not sure how this works, but if I were to go Dutty's, should I look for UC - from what I'm gathering, I could then get a minimum ROM version, choose what I want added, then somehow update that bare ROM to include my choices, keeping all my settings in the process? A hard reset, if needed, would restore the new UC basic ROM along with what I added -- do I have this right?

The version of HardSPL required is determined by what version SPL that is on your phone. If you reboot your phone in bootloader mode, you will see a version number for SPL. As long as you follow the directions for that version, you will be fine.

You need JumpSPL to get started, and then you need HardSPL to flash. 2 zip files total. Memorize the steps prior to starting, and do NOT skip any of them for any reason...
man...I thought I gave you advice yesterday on what to do. Literally, thousands of people have hardspl their roms just fine. Even a couple blonde girls in this forum have done it. It is not that hard and you shouldn't have too much trouble. Just follow the instructions and you will be just fine. After your first flash, you will move couple levels up in knowledge.

Jocky HardSPL etc

OK please don't flame me as I am going round and round in circles jumping from one thread link to another trying to get to grips with this stuff!
OK...
The other day I tried to install the hardspl and got the white screen problem.
I followed the thread to sort that out and all appeard ok and the phone continued to work OK under HTC stock 6.1
Yesterday I flashed L26_Kaiser_Diamond_V8_light release and have been playing around with it trying to sort stuff out.
I then started reading the thread about ultimate radios and trying to work out what other radios work with this ROM and how I go about installing them and read I need to confirm the spl I am on and so did the hold camera button and reset to see the spl version.
It says the following:
KAIS130 MFG
SPL-1.0.0liPof
CPLD-8
Now from what I understand it should say SPL-3.2X or similar?
But it does not?
I thought that I needed the SPL-3.2X etc in order to flash cooked ROMS but it looks like I dont have that......so how was I able to flask L26_Kaiser_Diamond_V8_light release ?
Thanks

Read the SQL Questions thread in the Wiki. It will explain a lot of this to you.
In short, any HardSPL will allow you to flash, it's just the 3.* ones are more compatable with the latest WM6.1 builds.
EDIT:
Normally I'd flame you for this, but Im already flaming another noob atm That doesn't mean someone else wont flame you later.

If you are able to flash a ROM onto your device, then you must have an UNLOCKED phone. For simple instructions on upgrading to the new SPL I suggest you visit the following :

Good luck.
Well I am sure I am gonna get flamed for this post, but here goes....
BTW "I AM NOT MOANING OR PICKING FOR AN ARGUMENT" I know this info here is given as is and appreciate the time people spend putting it all together
For the noob there is a trillion things to read here all of which lead to another trillion things which lead to ......
This phone flashing is all new to me and as I paid £434 for it I dont want to brick it, a term along with many I have never heard of before coming here.
I digress...
Anyway after reading and trying to understand it all I have flashed my phone and it works a treat and I am happy, just still in the dark about many things.
The thing is as a noob it is extremely daunting to start to read a thread, wiki etc to try to understand about a topic which diverts you to threads which divert, divert, divert so that after 3-4 diversions you foget what it was you were readiing about to start with!
And then you get to the point....I dont understand this...should I post lest I get flamed.......
So basically from a noobs point of view....everyone was a noob at some point, be gentle with us!
OK.....let the pachjo bash commence...........
Not a flame, just my way of working...
You raise some good points about the amount of info here. But like most here I managed to flash my device without posting a single new thread. If I had a problem with a step I posted there.
_Alex_ has consolodated most info into the single sticky. And there are step by step guides and FAQs on the Wiki.
I just took it one topic at a time:
*Found a ROM, said I needed HardSPL.
*Found HardSPL, installed it.
*Flashed ROM.
*No sound, found thread explaining about Radios. Flashed Radio.
*and so on.
I was (and still do) always reading thread that I found related to me learning as I go and helping where I can. I too like you knew nothing when I first joined and no one minds "noobs" asking questions in the relevant threads when they get stuck, but this is ROM development forum. All new threads should pertain to ROM "development".

first off, you can flash any rom with the olipof hardspl 1.0. the problem is, you will get screen freezes every once in a while. Using jumpspl, you can go to another hardspl. Usually jumpspl is included in all the new hardspls, but maybe not. Get familiar with what jumpspl is and then switch to hardspl.
