How should I choose a ROM? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

I've very new to all this, having used a non-PDA/smartphone (SE637) for many years before purchasing a Tilt. While quite PC-literate, I find myself very intimidated with all this. I read as much as my mind allows before requiring large quantities of diet-coke -- then I need a nap to calm myself down from the soda before reading any more, or my head explodes.
I think that I need a new ROM, but I'm not sure why! Everywhere I read, that's what I'm told.
This community is very knowledgable and seems very helpful. As this appears to be more for developers than users like me, I'm hesitant to ask my question for fear of offending a developer, which isn't my intent. I'm looking for information that might assist me in choosing which ROM to use.
I suppose that I want the phone to run faster, be easier to use/see (I don't see as well as I did 50 years ago... ), and have the latest of whatever is the best at the moment, spending as little as possible in the process. A truly never-ending story...

Before you start flashing decide what's important to you. Are you looking for a certian look & feel? Is fuctionality more important or do you want spped/stability?
Then research the different Roms, most include feature lists & screen shots in the first few posts of the thread.
So what it really comes down to is a lot of reading.
Oh and be sure to HardSPL your device BEFORE doing anything.

Also, like kyphur said read and do the hardSPL first but for me I found it's most helpful just to try some. Download a few, flash them give it a whirl and see what you like. Once you try a few you'll find options and programs you love and will start looking for roms that have what you need and more importantly what you don't like. And if you never find anything you love then start cooking. There are a lot of great wikis here to guide you step by step.
Hope this helps.

Start with Wiki first. Once you hardspl, load your first rom. You will find how easy it is and start to flash more roms like crazy. Experiment, and then you will find what you like. After flashing your first rom, you will realize how much better your new rom is compare to the stock rom.

just start off by choosing a few roms...then read about it as the chef would describe their rom...see which one fits u most...then make sure u read teh wiki and faq before u actually start ur flashing...to make sure nothing goes wrong...and then if that doesnt fit u..try another rom..but all the roms here...are better than stock for sure

I knew this wasn't going to be easy... Rating system anyone? I suppose I'm also nervous about doing a first flash. What about CID and SIM unlocking?

HardSPL removes the Carrier lock (CID) from your phone. As for SIM unlocking, I haven't bothered yet because I don't travel anywhere that AT&T doesn't provide service.
Once you've done your share of reading, if you are still confused about what type of ROM you are looking for, check out whatever the latest Dutty release is at that point in time. Dutty's Kaiser ROMs are probably the most popular on XDA.
I use a [somewhat] clean ROM myself, with the bare minimum preloaded. This way I can install what I need, and not worry about wasted space for programs I don't use.

eenie meenie minie moe
j/p
however, for Christ sake, please have hardspl installed.
Just pick one by reading the changelogs usually located in the first couple of posts.

Is there a Tilt-specific version (currently with ATT's latest released ROM) of HardSPL that avoids all the headaches I'm reading about?
I'm still not sure how this works, but if I were to go Dutty's, should I look for UC - from what I'm gathering, I could then get a minimum ROM version, choose what I want added, then somehow update that bare ROM to include my choices, keeping all my settings in the process? A hard reset, if needed, would restore the new UC basic ROM along with what I added -- do I have this right?

The version of HardSPL required is determined by what version SPL that is on your phone. If you reboot your phone in bootloader mode, you will see a version number for SPL. As long as you follow the directions for that version, you will be fine.

Thanks, NotATreoFan. I found info on what a bootloader is, and this is the info displayed:
KAIS1*0
SPL-1.93.0000
CPLD-8
What should my search criteria look like to find the HardSPL that I need to use?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354061
and i think from your spl version you can pretty much guess which one you have to use

Thanks for the help, XtreMe_G. Just so I have this straight, out of the 4 files listed, I only need to download and run JumpSPL1.93-KAIS.zip and I'm done? The Tilt is now prepared to accept any appropriate ROM?

You need JumpSPL to get started, and then you need HardSPL to flash. 2 zip files total. Memorize the steps prior to starting, and do NOT skip any of them for any reason...

man...I thought I gave you advice yesterday on what to do. Literally, thousands of people have hardspl their roms just fine. Even a couple blonde girls in this forum have done it. It is not that hard and you shouldn't have too much trouble. Just follow the instructions and you will be just fine. After your first flash, you will move couple levels up in knowledge.

Will do ask you suggest. Just a thought... by doing this, will anything on my phone be affected (programs, settings, etc.)? I'm, obviously nervous about all this, and while I will follow your instructions with hardSPL, I'm not yet ready to flash a ROM.

WM6.0 upgrade for the most inexperienced WM5.0 HTC prophet user.

Hi Friends,
I'm a very very fool and inexperienced QTEK S200 user.
I have never tried ROM update upto now.
Can any one guide me to update my QTEK S200 from WM5.0 to WM6.0 step by step.
Assume that I just know how to read and push the buttons.
Let me introduce my QTEK S200 to you.
ROM version: 2.20.7.21.WWE
ROM date: 7/10/06
Radio Version:02.40.21
Protocol Version: 4.1.13.20
ExtROM Version:2.20.7.101
IPL:2.20.0001
SPL:2.20.0001
I haven't done any modifications on locks and etc.
I don't know if it is cid locked or not.
I know that it is not gsm locked.
Thank you for you patience and time wasted for me and the guys like me.
You can send "step-by-step" guide to my e-mail if you want.

wow I didn't know there was a 2.20 prophet ipl around^^
if you take the smart crossbow rom:
1. hardreset (camera and recorder button und reset)
2. when you are back in align screen, (the screen were you have to klick on crosses on the display ) you leave it there and connect it to the computer
3. in the upcoming active sync window you press cancel to stay in guestmode
4. extract all the files from the exe you downloaded it into a folder
5. run upgraderom.bat or similar
I was going to say "hey mine is "
but then i checked and it isn't

The first link sent was very clear and easy to apply.
But the suggested link is 11 pages long threath with again so much problems etc.
What I try to do is to figure out comleted, step by step installation guide.
For example:
1-download xxxx.zip from www.xxxx.com
2-download yyyy.exe from www.yyyy.com
3-download zzz.cab , ttt.cab and kkk.cab
3-extract xxxx.zip to C:/xxxx you will have aaa.cab,bbb.dat and ccc.tmp
4-run yyyy.exe go file->open, select bbb.dat and open it.
5-.......

Is there any body that can provide this information for newbies.

Use the first page to get the rom . use the second link to fix the problems you have. I'm not sure why you have to run wm6 as a newbie? I think you better off stay on wm5 aku 3.x or 2.x its less bleeding edge, hence less bugs to worry about. I admit, once you start upgrade roms, you became hooked, you start try all kinds of roms, and at that point you wont be a newbie anymore. In case you will ask me where are the wm5 roms:

I would write you a guide from heart, no problem. But the point is that every ROM has it's own installation-procedure!
Some use the upgrade.bat, while others use the RUU (ROMUpdateUltility.exe).
Some need to be installed from bootloader, other one's need to be installed from within the OS itself.
That's why everybody who wants to flash ROM's on his device should know the basics of flashing.
And all the basics can be found in the wiki, mentioned here before.
After learning the basics, choose a ROM you want to use.
Then you should start reading every topic related to this ROM from 1st to last post, like we all did when
we wanted to flash our first ROM!!
When you've read everything, you'll know exactly what to expect and what to do..
I decided to do so.
Even I have read related threads and deciden to open this thread to prepare a installation guide think it wont work because of the reasons that you mentioned.
I'll follow smart1's ROM page and after I belive in there is no fatal error on the rom I'll flash it to my prophet.
The only information that I neeed will be should I cid unlock my device or not.
I think I'll be able to find this info also.
After all I'll prepare some guides for newbies for the ROMs that I used.
and add as new threads here and in my language for our forums.

You don't have to CID-unlock your device to flash (Prophet-)ROM's. Not the one's released here on xda-developers anyway.
grtz
Should not be a problem by now posting the same post three times!
Hundreds of people have managed to flash their device. Experienced as well as newbies. It's a little anoying to look at the latest posts and fined some multiple times. Yours is not more important then any other one!
If you realy want to do something with your device that's far from standard you also have to be willing to feed yourself with tons of info. Sure everybody would like a DIY document in their mailbox. But who will be held resonsable when you do something you don't even have a clue off?
Further if you think the WiKi is not clear enough to real newbies, then contribute to this forum and place your info in the WiKi so you can help others, like we all try to do here

If only we were all so rich... When I first started, I downloaded a WM6 Rom I found on this forum but read nothing... Tried to flash it, phone went to bootloader immediately afterwards and would do nothing else. I called T-Mobile and they sent me to the place on T-Mobile.com where I could get the official Rom download and was able to restore my MDA to life again but not until I had read about 20 different threads, did I attempt it again.
Thats the problem with some people here. They don't read and just assume that because they're a Software Dev that they automatically know everything or think that because they're pretty computer savvy that they know what they're doing or think that because they had their device for a few months that they're automatically an expert... It's annoying to tell you the truth because the only real way to learn is through a lot of reading, or trial and error and thats how everyone here has to learn.
I read this forum for a few MONTHS before I flashed my device, and I'm glad I did. Not only do you have to READ the information, but you also have give it time to SINK IN so that it is fully understood.
There are some people who automatically cry out for help without expending any effort (NOOBE needs help! give me a link, fix this, WAA WAA). And then there are the ones who make this a great forum, they READ READ and REREAD, TEST and RETEST and generally provide knowledge, information and assistance.
All of us are riding on the backs of the mostly unsung developers Like Faria, Bepe and all the others.

Why the hell do you want Underground????!!!!!!!!
It's old, unstable and has soooo many bugs that have all been resolved in recent ROMs. Have you just had the forum on pda view then jumped at the first WM6 ROM post from the early days?
I'm not interested with the Underground WM6 but when MB_WM6 did not work, i thought of trying that.
I have a question here, i tried installing MB_WM6 and it stopped at 95%, later i tried to install Faria's kitchen ROM and it was successful. I tried unlocking the CID with lokowiz03. Do u people still feel that my phone is still CID locked.

Place for Newbs to get Started-Want Tilt to Look Like Touch

Any advice? I am new to this whole thing. Have done some overclocking and what not on my PC, but this is a whole different game.
What types of things can I do without risking really f'ing things up?
What I hope is the simplest things I was hoping to do was to make my TILT screen look like the HTC Touch.
I thought about downloading Dutty's tweaks, but I am thinking I might be out of my depth starting out.
I would like to learn some things, but don't want to annoy the veterans that are here. Any direction would be appreciated.
Thank you.
What you could do is read, all the post people have put to do exactly what your asking. All the info is there you just need to search and read or use the wiki.
Have fun
-McMex
Thank you.
Download and run HardSPL on your phone from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
Then choose a dutty rom to install, since you are on a tilt try:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345385&highlight=dutty+tilt
This is all you have to do to have a fully functional htc looking rom with the touchflo cube with the newest drivers and radio for AT&T. I am using this one on mine right now. This rom has everything that you will probably need already installed. Anything else will just be for personal preferences. This rom has an advanced config program which is great but also download kaisertweak for some nice settings.
Thanks for keeping it simple for the newb. I read a couple of things about the "radio" portion being an issue. What does the "radio" tweak mean and will a HARD RESET fix problems if I decide to revert back?

The radio that comes with this rom will be the one you need. A hard reset only reinstalls the rom you currently have on the phone so to revert back you will have to choose another rom and install it. As long as the rom you install is an AT&T one or one made for the tilt then you won't have to do anything with the radio. If you change and use an HTC ship rom or one of dutty's other roms then you will have to download another radio and install it. Radios self install the same way as roms do.
This is the wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
On this page is the link to the ftp area where you could download the older radio if you decided to go to a non tilt rom.
Did you have any keyboard problems when doing the HARDSPL and installing the dutty rom. Also, which of the dutty roms did you install? Beta 2?
I am still on the Beta 1 and have been too lazy to changeover yet as Beta 1 is solid.
If you really want a good "How To" check out Mr. Van X:

Every place he says "Hermes" you just think "Kaiser" or "Tilt". All the steps are the same. It is a great walk-through. He has you download the .net framework first. I know I didn't have it. Then he steps you through hardSPL and finally the ROM.
A few weeks ago I followed this exactly and have never had any troubles. Why a walk-through like this is not in the Wiki for the Kaiser/Tilt I have no idea. It'd be a lot more helpful to newbs (like myself) than the forum fav response, "Read Dammit".

Why don't you write an entry for the wiki? That's how the Wiki is updated and maintained, by contributions by everyone.

Thank you.

I just used HardSPL and Dutty's Hybrid Rom No 5. I'm not sure what the difference is from his Tilt Beta version but I tried both and decided to go with the Hybrid. Point is, until last night I did not know what a Rom was. I read the forum and followed the directions. Here are links to what I used.
HardSPL (you need to do this first). Everything you need to know is in the first post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
Then find a ROM. I downloaded several including the stock ATT rom just in case I decided to go back. The steps for loading a ROM are almost the same as HardSPL, just follow the directions on the screen.
This is a link to Dutty's Tilt Beta ROM (all you need is the link to the ROM at the bottom of the first post). If you want to try Dutty's Hybrid ROM, scroll to the 3rd post made by username "alltheway" and click on the red Hybrid No 5 Rom link in his signature block.

It is very simple to do.
Do I need to SIM Unlock?
I have been reading through the posts, and I can't find if I must SIM lock my phone before trying to install Dutty's ROM. On my 8125 the general concensus was unlock both. I don't have any need to run other radio's on my phone, and I won't be traveling out of the US.
Also I am currently running SPB Pocket Plus 4.01. Should I do a hard reset before trying to CID unlock and load of new rom?

Flash - What Went Wrong?

I've always fancied flashing my Kaiser (V1615) with a new ROM, but was always nervous because I wasn't sure of the process and didn't want to risk bricking the phone as well as all the effort needed to get everything back on it I needed. Well, a few days ago my old Kaiser met the floor and an untimely end. So I decided to take the risk and put a new ROM on it and decided on the latest Dutty WM6.1 ROM.
I read all about flashing on here and made as much sense of it as I could. Thing is, I'm very technical in general, but not very familiar with Windows Mobile or flashing. I found there was lots to read, but it was all written with an assumed level of knowledge and understanding of terminology. As a result I found it quite hard to understand. I took the plunge anyway and started, but things didn't work out as expected and I didn't understand why.
I'm not trying to be critical of all the work a lot of people have put into the documentation that is available online, it's just that when I originally approached this with zero flashing experience I found it difficult and confusing to understand. What I really needed was a concise and basic introduction to flashing. I've now been through the process and after re-reading the documentation it makes a lot more sense.
I worked out you need to run something called HardSPL before you could flash a new ROM. I'm still not sure what HardSPL does apart from CID unlock the device, but what does CID unlock mean?
I ran HardSPL v1 and it started ok, but then I ended up with a white screen. At this point I already wished I hadn't started, but no going back now. Is it known why some phones white screen? Turns out it's a common problem, so followed the instructions to recover. All was well again, but still with the original ROM.
I thought I'd be brave and stuck with it and this time tried JumpSPL1.56-KAIS instead of HardSPL as recommended on one of the tutorials. This went better and I ended up with the Tri-Color screen. I plugged my USB cable in and USB showed on screen.
Next step I thought was to flash a ROM onto the device. I ran the Dutty updater on my PC and all started ok, but when the update got to 18% I received a communication error. I tried to recover using the updater, but the same thing happened. At this point the phone wouldn't boot, so I was more than a little worried and wishing I hadn't started!
Found something that described several options for recovering from this problem. I decided to try and flash the device back to the original ROM from Vodafone. When I eventually found that ROM I ran JumpSPL again, got to the Tri-Color screen and ran the updater. This time the update completed successfully and the phone rebooted and was all working again.
I decided to leave the device as it was and started customising it myself. I'd still love to put a cooked ROM on there, especially if it helps with performance, but after the experience above I'm not very confident.
Can anyone tell me where or what went wrong? I'm going to get my old Kaiser repaired and want to try again on that phone.
My flashing routene (not ideal but it works for me)
1) run the first part of the Kaiser SIM/CID Unlocker & Changer
2) after device reboots, hold camera button and restart to check SPL
3) Flash rom/radio of choice
4) Follow HardSPL v3.07, v3.28, v3.29 and v3.56 by JockyW 's second guide "If you have problems with the above process, try this:" and flash my 3.XX SPL of choice.
Sam
Wow, I need a cuppa now
I'll go through 1 at a time... (and Sam has answered some questions already)
-CID unlock means that when the phone is loading a new device into the ROM the Carrier ID check is removed, each Mobile phone carrier has a different CID in thier OS ROMs. Unlocked means you can flash a OS ROM from any carrier or a cooked OS ROM from this site.
-The Jump SPL should only be used for replacing the SPL. Do not flash anything other than SPL's when at the Jump SPL (or SSPL). OS and Radio ROMs should be flashed from either in Windows Or By Manually Entering the Bootloaders. More info on SPL's is here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=SPL Questions?
-Have a look at flashing from SD Card to avoid communication problems, http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=KaiserSDFlash
-The most clear instructions can be found here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser#ROMx20.Upgrading
Hope this helps.
Dave
Thanks for the advice, but this is what I normally encounter when I read something on here, which is advice which no doubt makes perfect sense to the author or others experienced in flashing, but usually raises more questions than it answers in my head.
For example;
1) run the first part of the Kaiser SIM/CID Unlocker & Changer

What do you mean by the "first part"? The thread you've linked to doesnt really explain what I'm downloading and doing.
2) after device reboots, hold camera button and restart to check SPL

Ok. I get this assuming you mean the device will reboot automatically and I restart it to check the SPL version that gets shown on the boot screen, but why do I need to do this?
3) Flash rom/radio of choice

So at this point I can simply plug my device into my PC and run the ROM updater I've downloaded. Working out what rom/radio version to download is a minefield in its own right.
4) Follow HardSPL v3.07, v3.28, v3.29 and v3.56 by JockyW 's second guide "If you have problems with the above process, try this:" and flash my 3.XX SPL of choice.

I thought HardSPL needed to be run before I flashed? Also, why the different versions? Which one do I choose?
BTW, not trying to moan about everything, just posting my experiences to find out where I went wrong, but also highlight some issues hopefully other flashing newbies can relate to and authors of tutorials can draw some useful feedback from.
Only one question, do I need to CID Unlock before using Jump and HardSpl or, the Hardspl does the Supercid ?
I'm not referring about SIM since I don't care, for now
With WM6.1 - Oficiall HTC ROM
Thanks
Thanks for that one dave, on reflection i kinda missed the whole point of the thread, and as for the majority of the stuff you posted i didnt undertand that to begin with.
Also, DaveTME, if you are wanting to flash a custom rom to youre kaiser. from my experiance and from the number of times ive seen this happen. i advise against asking for reccomendations(sp?) (not saying you will but its worth saying) try a few roms out and decide from there.
Also another thing to note. if you flash to WM6.1 remember to use a 3.xx spl otherwise you'll encounter a few problems with youre device.

download the Kaiser unlocker and run the first stage of it, the program is in the linked thread.

No, after the device reboots, youre given youre Rom, Protocol and Radio. if you hold the camera button and reset you'll get youre SPL displayed, youre looking for 1.01 olinex to be shown
So at this point I can simply plug my device into my PC and run the ROM updater I've downloaded. Working out what rom/radio version to download is a minefield in its own right.

1) Yes, just run the RUU with youre chosen rom and thats it
2) its not a minefield, just make a decision on what rom you like and flash it. theres nothing to stop you flashing another one.

The 1.01 SPL will allow you to flash a cutom rom. following that you need a 3.xx SPL as they are designed for windows mobile 6.1. as for yure decision. i use 3.29, yet other users have had better sucess with 3.56. Most rom chefs will say which SPL they reccomend anyway with their rom.

If you are already using that phone with T-Mo, then security unlock, hard spl and flash away! The best thing to do here is read read read! And dont be suprised if they move your thread! You can PM me though if you have any more questions! I will help you if I can!
sorry, just so that i dont turn my phone into a brick but what you are saying is that i can just flash my rom without any other steps.
thanks for the quick response.

As far as what you mean by " lose my lock" I am not sure, but, you will need to CID unlock and hard-spl for sure! Do you have the AT&T Windows Mobile 6 or 6.1? I canot stress how important it is to read everything you can and be as informed as possible before you flash! I dont want to sound like I dont want to help (thats why we are here) But If you are already SIM unlocked it would still be wise to follow all the steps just to make sure you are covering all your bases, after all we do love our phones alot (often brought up by my sometimes jealous girlfriend! LOL! Read and use this...

Then if you get white screen dont panic just reset and go here follow instructions then go back and do the first one....

No SPL is the bootloader on your phone when you hard SPL it keeps you from bricking your phone and allows you to flash non oem ROMs! If you Follow and read the links I just posted for you, you will be fine! I also use T-Mobile on a Tilt and I followed the steps and read alot and everything worked out perfect! I had to do the whitescreen fix, so it does work! I hope that helps!
P.S. Follow the instructions step by step, they are very important! Time consuming but worth it!
thank you very much
Please re-read the Newbies threads if you need an explanation as to what HardSPL is and how to install it and then flash a ROM. If you merely SIM unlocked to get on to T-Mobile, you will still need to CID unlock, so as a precaution you should do EVERYTHING in the newbies guide. Also, instead of just asking what HardSPL is, try following the links provided.
The community tends to be much more helpful when you have done your research and taken initative before asking for a direct hand out. This thread is better than average, but I thought I'd give you the heads up before flames come in from others.
Do everything here, all of it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835
Also note, the steps saying to remove your SIM and SD cards are very important.

thank u flashed it already.......sorry for the simple question re: hard spl.
HardSPL
Follow the tutorials. Get Hard SPL. Don't cut corners, you may brick your phone. Hard SPL will allow you to flash basically worry free.
It's great that your phone is unlocked, but that doesn't mean you can't brick it. I'd try to explain in greater detail, but the sticky posts at the top of this forum should be much better at it than I am.
Please post your questions in one of the threads already created. No need to create a new thread for random new questions.
