Activesync - why no manual sync? - Non-Touchscreen Windows Mobile Other

When I changed my WM-2003 smartphone for a new HTC S710 I had to upgrade Activesync to version 4.5.
This has a most undesireeable feature of syncing every 5 minutes when connected to my PC - does any one think this is a wanted feature? Can we petition Microsofte to remove it?
Searching the net I found a couple of sugestions for stopping this happening. One was to change a registry setting on the PC to disable sync on connect - Trid this but it had no effect. The other was to create a 'dummy' server on the phone and change the schedule settings to manual and then delete the 'dummy' server (the schedule option is greyed out normally) - this had no effect either.
My phone still insists on syncing every 5 minutes.
I would like it to sync on first connection, but if I am copying a lot of files to the phone (Music/Videos from itunes for which I have a script to update them automatically when I connect my phone so I have something new to watch/listem to every day) then the 5 minute auto sync interferes with this - slows down the file transfer and in some cases Active sync disconnects the phone and I have to re-start the transfer.
I could just remove the SD card - but its a lot easier to dock the phone walk away and come back later with everything update at least it would be if active sync did not try and update my contacts/emails every 5 minutes.
Another problem is that if I accidently un-dock the phone whilst it is doing one of these unwanted sync's then it usually corrupts my contacts/mail on the phone and I have to do a total re-sync - sometimes requiring a delete of the partnership to get it to work again.

Manual sync in 4.5?
Has anyone solved the problem with the missing "Manual Sync" in ActiveSync 4.5?
Previous versions of ActiveSync had a "Manual Sync" option, in that you had to click "sync" to sync your mobile device (I have an HTC 8525 and Windows XP pro PC, USB cable to PC) .
I tried adding a "fake" Exchange server, but it still automatically syncs the 8525 about every 5 minutes, and immediately when I connect. The "Schedule" menu option is now enabled, and it shows "Manual" in both the PC's activesync and on the 8525.
But-- it still syncs upon connection, and about every 5 minutes as long as it's connected.
Anyone find an actual solution to this one?

Solution
There is a solution by editing the registry:
Something about ActiveSync’s 5-minute sync feature -- http://www.gpcarreon.com/?p=592
Short:
* How: Fake Reg Key so that ActiveSync thinks Device is not cradled
* With: http://ceregeditor.mdsoft.pl/
* Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\State\Hardware\Cradled
My batchfile:
CeRegCMD.exe -w -kn "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\State\Hardware" -vn "Cradled" -vd 0
it works, device stays connected (transfer, deploy, etc..) but AS is fooled

Activsync problems

I have HTC Fuze I purchase two weeks ago and having problems with Activesync.
I've installed the software and hook the usb to the computer and it sync just fine.
The next day I tried to sync, it didn't reconize my profile from previous day and made me do another one.
It worked for a couple days, now it says I have two profiles on the device and I need to delete one to sync.
Why is the Activesync not recognizing the very first one I did?
I'm assuming you are getting an error code. It would help if you could tell us the specific code #. It would narrow it down.
Also, are you using Activesync 4.5? Which would be the most recent. My last question is, which Windows Mobile are you using? If you are using WM 6.1 it has a bug which causes problems with Activesync, if you have more than 100 of any category of item that is being synced. Contacts, appointments, notes, etc.
One possibility for why it didn't recognize your profile, have you made any significant changes in your phone during this time?
When you delete one of the profiles, make sure you not only delete the profile on your PC, make sure you delete the extra profile(s) on the activesync on your phone.
I'm not getting an error code, I get the "welcome to Pocket PC Wizard" and it wants me to set the device up all over again.
I am using ActiveSync 4.5 and WM 6.1.
When it sync, I have 54 contacts and 28 calendar events, so it didn't reach the 100 you were talking about.
I did delete everything from the device and PC last night when I set the lastest profile up.
I just plug the USB to the device again today and it pop open the "Welcome to Pocket PC Wizard". I just set everything up last night.
I guess until they fix the bug, I will always have to do this.

Is their a way to disable Auto Sync?

Has anyone found a way to disable the auto syncing "Bug" in active sync. Old versions could be set to only sync manually. but Microsoft crippled active sync by disabling this option.
I really hate the fact that if I connect my Smartphone to my PC for charging, copying files or installing software it insists on attempting to sync every 5 minutes.
This usually results in the file copying failing, or at best slowing it down. I only want to sync the phone every day or two, certainly not every five minutes.
The best option I can find is to only create a guest partnership and not sync anything from my windows PC - I also have a MAC and use Missing Sync to sync Contacts, Appointments, Files, Music, Pictures and SMS/call logs - much better than what Microsofts crappy active sync application can do.
Missinc Sync also remembers my custom ringtones on contacts, which I loose if Active sync decides to completely re-sync my phone - this usually happens if I remove my phone whilst it is syncing - because I picked it up to answer a call whilst it was doing another totally unwanted sync

Can't synchronize with Activesync!

Hi all,
It driving me insane that I can't work it out why Activesync is not syncing my phone.
Here is the situation. Got the phone from my brother. With him it synced fine, with USB cable, with Outlook 2003 and WM6.5.
I have the same setup but Outlook 2007.
What happens is that when it connects, it finds the device, I only set it to sync contact, tasks and calender of outlook. It then says "Looking for changes" and soon after it says "Synchronizing". But then it hangs.
I searched the forum and the internet. I tried reconfiguring, soft resets, installing CompanionLink (software that works through Activesync).
No joy!
I simply want to be able to keep my contacts, calender and tasks from outlook synced. Nothing more.
Any help!!?!
I had the same problem when i used Active Sync from XP, but i works when im using Win7.
Try deleting all the Active Sync settings and make the configuration from Win7. When i did that it worked when i connect to the PC with XP - strange but true...
Ok. But what do you mean with "make the setting for win7"?
Yay! Got it to work!
Funny that I had the feeling in the beginning that it might be the amount of to-be-synced items was going to be too big. And somewhere on the net I found someone with the same idea.
I disconnected the device (usb cable). I removed the device from the "file" dropdown menu. And reconnected the usb-cable. When prompted with the wizard, in the settings I deselected ALL the to be synced categories.
Then it found the device and it synced... nothing.
But it said it synced.
Then I opened the option menu in Activesync and added only the contacts. And hurray! It started syncing. Then I added the agenda and hurray again!
The only thing that happened is that I ended up with duplicate contacts and agenda items. But after an hour I had that fixed too.
Note: Although I don't think that it contributed to the solution, I did reinstall and soft-resetted the device before I did all this. Just to let you know...

Click to collapse
Try this:
1. At setting | connections | Run the the 'USB to PC'
2. Uncheck "Enable faster data..."
3. Uncheck "Ask me first about USB...."
4. Soft reset phone & PC
5. sync again.
Note: This may enable activesync works but file transfer from PC to Phone/Storage will fall back. may need to swap the setting back.
HOPE it helps.

Be careful with Activesync

First sync with activesync *DELETES* any info on your phone that you've selected to synchronize --by DEFAULT... That's right. --The default setting with activesync is to replace everything on your phone with whatever you have in Outlook on your computer (you've been typing everything into Outlook to match everything on your phone, right)?
Now this assumes you selected to synchronize your contacts, calendar, etc... If you avoid checking any boxes on your activesync setup, nothing will be overwritten.
The other solution I found (say you want your phone to add its info to Outlook on your PC) is to select all those boxes on setup and then when it starts synchronizing *IMMEDIATELY* cancel the sync. Below it will list the things you selected to sync. Right-click on these items, and you can then select which device to overwrite in case of conflict. THEN continue with sync... ***There is nowhere in the initial setup to choose this.***
The nice thing, is if your phone is empty and you keep everyone's info on Outlook, it will -by default- add that info to your phone. Hmmm...
NOW -why I'm posting... Obviously activesync deleted all my phone's info on the first go. NOT FUN. Looking around -plenty of others have had this problem. I could rant on how stupid Microsoft is, why should activesync overwrite anything, and why should ANYTHING EVER be overwritten / deleted without a warning...? But my real concern here is how I got started upgrading my phone by reading through these forums, and looking at step-by-step instructions for installs, and reading opinions and follow-ups, with no mention of activesync problems... Googling "activesync delete contacts" will get you get a ton --several in these forums.
My hope is that there will be a Full ActiveSync Sticky --and warning on future "step-by-step" instructions where activesync is referrenced (activesync is often referenced in step-by-step instructions for those who don't know how to add files to their phones)...
Other activesync features (problems):
There are other times (separating a partnership) when Activesync will try to delete everything.
Activesync will re-sync automatically every few minutes while your phone is connected, often slowing / disrupting installs, sms, tasks in general.
Activesync will automatically run every few minutes on the phone even after disconnect.
Conclusion: In general, there is way too much automation in Activesync where you really need manual control. Try deleting a contact on your phone by hand --you always get a requester for confirmation. For Pete's sake, even Anti-Virus software asks if you want to delete suspected files and usually gives you a quarantine option... Activesync is a SCARY SCARY program. Be very careful with it.
My current setting: NO boxes checked for activesync to automatically do anything. All it does is connect my phone to my PC...

[Q] Wireless Sync Freezing

Is anyone having issues with Zune wireless sync feature on their Windows Phone? My phone will always start a wireless sync, but it will always freezes partway through. I've tried all of the things listed below, but have had no success getting the phone to perform a complete wireless sync.
- uninstalled and re-installed the Zune software
- removed the phone and re-setup the phone wifi sync within the Zune software
- confirmed the Zune software is open through the Windows Firewall
- tried turning off Microsoft Security Essentials
- updated the router firmware
- changed the router settings to WPA2-AES from WPA2-AES+TKIP
- changed music/picture/video syncing to "manual" sync
- have podcasts set to sync "all"
- tried doing a battery pull on the phone
None of this has helped me to complete a wireless sync. I'm trying to sync a Samsung Focus using a Linksys WRT54G2 router with Windows 7 64-bit. Anyone have any solutions?
Thanks!
Do you have a microSD installed in your phone?
Nope, I haven't installed a microSD card on the phone.
Interesting. I had something similar to this happen onto my phone before it just stopped wirelessly syncing entirely. After 10 minutes, almost on the dot, it would attempt to do it--go to the gray "connecting" screen. The PC wouldn't register it, and nothing would happen.
Of course, now my phone doesn't even try, and nor does the one I got to replace it to fix this issue, so you're a step ahead of me.
I'm having the same problem. I haven't tried to wirelessly sync in a long time, but not that i am, it starts to do it, and it goes about 40-60% complete....then doesn't go any further...
I've tried a couple of things as well. Reinstalled zune, checked the firewall setting, disabled and re-enabled the wireless sync function...and nothing seems to make it wirelessly sync 100%
can't seem to find anything about it online....
