problem with the universal in north america

so can anyone tell me if I am right? Here in north america we are just starting to get UMTS in some areas. And I have been waiting for the universal wanting to get one. but our north american umts network is on the 1900 mhz band mode and the rest of the world uses the 2100 mhz band mode for umts. that meens that the universal will have its umts radio on 2100. So does that meen it wont work here as a umts device and I will be stuck with just gprs?? if so I just cant buy it
Hi,
AFAIK, all UMTS phones, so the Universal, are GPS phones as well. So, form a technical point of view you can use the phone whereever there is reception. At least here in germany, the GPS service provider are the same as the UMTS service provider. So, if you leave a UMTS zone the phone automatically logs into the GPS zone. I would expect that it is the same in the US.

EDIT: Now I have read your message completely and see, that I provided an answer that does not match your question 2nd try: I would expect that if you get your UMTS device via an US provider that it matches its UMTS band. But, without coverage you are stuck with GPRS/GPS, thats right
ARGH, that sucks. because Im sure that by the time they make a north american universal it will be outdated anyway
I tend to agree. I thought that with UMTS whis crazy frequency problem would disappear finally....
I just checked on the german t-mobile page, which has the Universal, T-Mobile MDA Pro as they call it, on their page.
Unfortunately there is no UMTS frequency mentioned. Maybe there is one generic UMTS setting which allows different frequencies to be used, and all UMTS devices support all the frequencies?
OK, that might be a bit optimistic, I agree ...
Edit:
I got interested and checked for the UMTS frequency situation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS
So, even with the special US situation, the UMTS frequencies are not connected to contries but comminucation methods (FDD, TDD). So, as long as the UMTS implementation in the US does not differ from the ITU standards, you should be able to use the Universal in the US. But even the above mentioned wiki page is not clear on the situation, so probably you will have to wait and see ...
Oh well I guess I will just have to wait for the wizard or maybee even (Forgive me) a non htc device???
if the wizard has a slower prosesor than my magician I just cant buy it either. and I have my magician tweaked up to 520mhz
I know this is off-topic
I have my magician tweaked up to 520mhz

what program are you using for that...??
I tried PHM and it hang
then I tried XCPUScalar.. and it worked, I could overclock it to 520 MHz, but when I tried Beta-Player to benchmark the device.... it said 416 MHz..
and when I used lower speeds.. Beta-player and the XCPUScalar gave the same result
so I could only under-clock my device, but I couldn't overclock it...
are you sure that your device is running at 520 MHz?? and if so, is it stable??and any noticeable improvement in performance??
thanks in advance
Heres the deal my friends in the US.
And btw....its really not good news at all....

Frequency selection

I was wondering if there are any utils out there which can either tell me or select the frequency the phone is currently using. I know my phone can do both 850 and 1900 but I think it defaults to 850. My previous phone only did 1900 and it worked perfectly everywhere so I want to be able to confirm if it is the phone or the network. Any help would be great.

3G Possible with Hermes update?

Was wondering if the VOX (S710) had the capability to have the radio activated to 3G, similar to the Treo 750v with SetHSDPA.exe update from Hermes.
They are both HTC I believe, didn't know if it was just a matter of turning it on, or if the radio is not compatible and we have to wait for the s730
well, i don't bealive that the vox has the 3g chips inside otherwise it would have a higher production cost. The update you are talking about is from 3g to 3.5g (speed increment).

UMTS/HSDPA radio bands

Hi guys, I don't know if this is a basic question but I have to ask it since I haven't find an answer yet...
Can I modify the HSDPA/UMTS band via ROM or SPL update?
I bougth a HTC T-mobile myTouch (1700/2100 MHz bands, UMTS/HSDPA) but later I realized that here in CHILE my provider uses the 850/1900 band for 3g .
If I root my phone and try a different SPL and ROM, is it possible to change bands?
So, can I do somethig to make it work here or is it a matter of hardware?
Thanks
it would require hardware change....
You could sell the MyTouch and buy a Rogers Magic or Dream. They use the same 3G frequency as your networks in Chile. 850/1900
I'm from Chile too, I have the same "problem" But actually I don't care to much because next year 2 Nextel and VTR will offer mobile services... And they are gonna be based on the 1700/2100 bands...

Hi no-frost, I know that next year that will happen, but nobody really knows when... By the way, I saw your other posts, I wanted to tell you that I rooted an entel magic phone without loosing 3g or wifi...(via gold card) after a lor of trying an error I finally cach up with a mixture of ROM and SPL that worked

[Q] HTC HD2 T9193 TELSTRA to ANDROID, Question about 850 BAND

Hi... Im from Costa Rica, our unique phone provider here (ICE) works with 850 band for 3G, which is the same as the Australian and AT&T as you know, so I had to buy my HD2 in the T9193 version. I found that windows really sucks, so I decided to change it to Android, I watched videos and read a lot, finally I succesfully did it and it's working just fine. But now, when I try to change it to 3G it doesn't work, I just realized that when I get into the phone Identity on Windows it says:
Model No
HTC HD2 T8585
Then on software information:
OS:
5.2.23152 (23152.5.3.12)
Manilla version
2.5.20191914.0
Rom Version
Dutty´s HD2 FAM ROM (V13a) WWE
ROM Date
25/12/2010
Radio Version
2.14.50.04
Protocol Version
15.42.50.09U
and when I try to change to 3G it says
Band Frequency
Auto
GSM (900+1800)+UMTS(2100+900)
GSM(1900+850)
UMTS(2100+900)
Looks like the Rom that I downloaded and installed in order to be able to change it to android changed the T9193 settings and the 850 Frequency is no longer supported. Here are my questions:
#1- Do I have a T8585 now?
#2- Do I have to change the rom back to Telstra to make it work on 3G?
And then when Im on Android Im totally lost. I tryed to find where to change the settings to get 3G but it only says:
Network Mode
WCDMA only
GSM Only
GSM/WCDMA auto
This is the Android version I installed:
Model Number
HTC Desire HD A9191
Android Version
2.2
#3- How or where can I change or find 3G on Android?
#4- Please tell me what to do so I can run android, and use 3G on a 850 frequency since I bought the Telstra T9193 version please.
Last question is:
#5- Is the band Frequency a software issue or a hardware issue?
First 2 questions are for Windows, the #3 and #4 are for Android. Last one is a general question.
I will really appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance...
