RAMdisk and Battery life - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 Windows Mobile 2005 Upgrading

First of all thank all of you developers for the great great work!
I bit the bullet few days ago and installed WM2005
it's so fantastic!
But I realized that the battery life hasn't been imporved or it might have been reduced
So it got me thinking, is it possible to not have the RAMdisk and PagePool so that we don't touch the RAM at all and improve the battery life?
because one of the biggest improvment WM2005 brought was increased battery life by not keeping the votile RAM alive which consumes almost 50% of the battery life...
Just a thought...

ah...
ok... no reply
I must have asked a stupid question
I willl answer my self with self-made explanation.
Himalaya's hardware was designed to keep the SDRAM voltile at all time
so no metter what you do with the software there is no way to force
128Mb of SDRAM to asleep.
Damn.

hi to all ,, i want to thank the logout for the nice ROM 3.34 it s wonderful and stable ..but it has the same problem with smart dial program, won t work with the virgy dial pad skin ,,i don t know how to get the original dial pad skin to let th e smart dial work
Thanks
the rom posted here :

i-mate Pocket PC Phone Edition
128 MB RAM
64 MB RAmDisk
ROM 3.34

i'm pretty sure that it's not the rom that deside if ram is kept powered when the device is off it's the device itself which handle that
so only nativ 2005 hardware would safe power
even unused ram would be powered because the hardware dont try to deside if random bits are random or your data
p.s. come to think of it i dont even think nativ 2005 devices turn off the ram when off because that would mean that applications would die when you turn the device off unless the system would place those applications which are suspented when off's memory to disk so their heap and stack info would not be gon when they started again when the user turned on the device
but some applications run even when off like notification and phone controlling applications so their would still need powered memory for their heap and stack

Feedback : 2003 SE vs 2005

What are the real gains to upragde an "old" 400 MHz Himalya 2003 SE to a WM2005 ?
Speed ? MP3 Ringtones ? Compatibliy ? Stability ?
Anyone who could give me a piece of advise, it will be a great help.
WM5 - slower, but nice graphics and comfortable using with one thumb.
IMHO
I Need Urgent Help!!!
argh!! people i need help! fast! i have an i-mate PPC phone edition and its running on wm2003... i need an upgrade to 2003SE or wm5 but i dunno how to do it... pls help me...
You need to use the search function of this forum..
Or if you need a real time helper contact me through Yahoo Messenger
I went for c_shekar's WM5 and I have to admit I love it. Just for the better camera software - I lost the zoom but gained an edit/rotate function. And the auto-correct is pretty good for low light pics. And the soft buttons are great. It took a while to get used to some things being in different places, but overall I'm extremely impressed.
WM5 On the last AKU 3.5 best, at me never so quickly the device did not work...

I like the fact that an empty battery doesn't wipe out the memory (Storage).
(if you don't install your programs in ram)
Gr. Mach2005
at fact now.
everybody use ram-disk - so you still can loose your data.
as for me - i choose wm5 because of better IE an SPB Mobile shell.
it little more slowest and buggy then wm03se, but it not so bad at all.
if one copy the content pf ramdisk to a sdcard and copy it back if data is lost and softreset then one all is well
"better ie" sounds a bit like an oxymoron
Speed: 2003SE Faster because programs work on ram not rom like 2005.(It's old device, I not serious when it's hang but sometime it will hang)
MP3 Ringtones/Polyphonic Midi: 2003SE and 2005 MP3 Ringtone ummm... not serious for me but polyphonic ringtone, sound of instrument is different with 2003/2003SE (I use same midi files to test.)
Compatibliy: 2005 is newer. I answer 2005.
Stability: 2005 AKU 3.5 is better than 2003SE
Phone: When I use 2003SE OS My girlfriend tell me about sometimes she call me but it have waiting tone but I didn't hear it.
When I use 2005 I not heard about somebody can call me and my device not wakeup when somebody calling me.

WM6 vs WM5?

I'm about to buy my first WM phone. I have had several WM PDAs, my current one being the HP 4705 running WM5. Can anyone tell me if the memory management in WM6 has been improved over WM5? I find my PDA grinding to a near halt almost every day and am forced to do a soft reset. I also notice my memory meter slowly dropping throughout the day (memory leaks), even if I don't get one of those irritating slowdowns. I'm guessing in a typical day I do a soft reset 3-4 times. Has this issue been fixed/improved with WM6?
Thnks.

Is there NO one using WM6???? Or am I in the wrong forum?
it probably depends on your device and wich drivers and software combination you're using. I'm not sure but I think only one or two devices have the official wm6 available. You may bet a better answer on the wizard wm6 forum.
I think you will find a lot of the people on XDA-Developers that use Windows Mobile 6 do so from an unofficial release of WM6 on an existing device that shipped with WM5. As a result it's not very easy to evaluate issues like memory usage. Further to this, the quality of WM is highly dependent on the device, the operator that customised it for the device, and the minor version + build number. You might describe it as something of a crap shoot, which unfortunately I would doubt gets better with WM6 (but I might be wrong).
The good news is, certainly if you get a HTC device, this forum is excellent for helping upgrade to an alternative version that may improve things.
Your questions were quite difficult to answer. You see no I don't have to re-set 4 or 5 times under WM6, but then I never had to do that under WM5 either.
I can't possibly comment on the internal operatings and memory management, all I can say is that WM6 runs much faster than WM5 used to, and feels like a good upgrade. But that's not what you asked.
I still use a Third party task manager for closing applications like I did with WM5. I don't think much has changed in regards to automatically unloading apps to free up memory, but that's not how I use my Artemis anyway.
WM6 was called "6" purely for marketing reasons.
From technical standpoint its much closer to AKUs - mostly it differs in built-in applications. Contrary to AKUs it also provides changed UI visuals.
Hovewer it still uses CE 5 kernel, and internal OS version for it is "5.2"
All internal architecture is same with WM5.

Overview of the many roms created here and a vote for the best rom for the Universal

Guys there are a lot of roms created by the genious minds of rom cooks here. id like everyone to share there view of the roms overview and a vote for the best rom cooked for the Universal. Sounds fun huh!
my list (sorry if I missed anyone)
ROM really depends on your needs . If the cook has put in the apps you use, go for his rom. Otherwise it takes up more space adding your own apps - or alternatively go for rDosti/B&L vanilla and add all your own.
The free memory is important to me (being a 64MB Uni owner!!), and I have recorded the free memory on a clean install with no SD card in.
I want working camera, TCMD TCPMP and Route66N7 to work properly (which likes its memory!). I don't use wkTask, but prefer QuickMenu or currently playing with Battery Status (but after making own theme with weather, this took up too much program memory, and although looked nice I decided that I needed functional and not eye candy!). Fast is also good . I also need my Blade BT headset to work with my BT GRPS mouse.
My observations (in no particular order):
Tomal 7.7 OS 19900 (19900'2), 27.8 MB free (program memory) here
-this is stable and has all apps I like *my favourite* (also has flash-disk)
EFN 2.4 OS 19588 (19900'3), 27.4 MB free here
-seems stable, need to add few apps (eg, TCMD, TCPMP), but has VC - keeping my eye on this! (more of want than need as I don't get 3G at home!)
rDosti 9 OS 19188 (19174), >33.9 MB free here
-seems stable, vanilla so need to add all apps you want (incl. Word, Excel, .NET etc). Built on my old favourite ROM from thingonaspring (below) - but with same problem. Can't get Blade (BT headset) to work
PDAVIET 2.61 OS 19949, 28.6 MB free here
-hangs occasionally, couldn't change alarms
-not a rom cooker on this forum, so feedback is useless from here!
Mo3ulla 1.5 OS 19588, 26.97 MB free here
-seems stable, but was disappointed with free program mem
Thingonaspring 41.28 OS 19188 (19174), 29.8 MB free here
-stable, excellent free memory, settings/buttons had no lock or backlight, some components getting old (TCMD) - has real VGA (if you like that sort of thing!)
-seems to have stopped cooking any more universal rom's - anyone heard from thing?
JWRights here
-no information, except was slow in dealing my cards in Patiences game
Beasty&Laurentius 2.08.01 Business here
-they also have newer test version and older FullFlavour/Vanilla versions, and were my favorite cookers
-beasty still pops back to help, and may produce newer rom, but has gone on to some wierd htc machineAdvice: pick your ROM(s), and help the cookers sort out bugs & features by encouraging them - and they can use this information with others too.
Hope this helps someone
great
thanks jonmorgan for your effort and views. come on guys more overviews will help our good rom cookers to improve their cooking by giving out your reviews of their great and effortfull work..
My vote goes for....
Ranju´s v7.6 & v7.7 definetly!
Cheers!
Ranju's 7.6 here!
Using Tomals 7.7 I must say, eaven after testing some others...
This is the best.
Its stable, fast, i love flashdisk and storage space
for this poll i Vote for Tomal/Ranju 7.7

--- Did you try 9.1 (it has extra support for BT mouse and other BT devices. I would suggest trying that and then letting me know if it doesnt work with your Blade... I believe 9.1 should fix that (the main reason i released it).

great replies guys
man you guys are great keep on helping our friends, the genius rom cookers for their hard work thank you cookers without you all we could never make the universal the way it is today. thanks all guys for their overviews.
Ranju´s v7.6 & v7.7 definetly!

That's one of the fastest roms or may be the FASTEST rom ever created for the Uni, and no, the free program memory after reboot is 26-27+ MB with some programs in start up on 64 MB Universal! You guys don't write some stuff before test it

Yes, I can also confirm this rom is THE FASTEST so far for universal, it is very stable and was the only rom that did not give me phone hang-ups, but because it is so vanilla I had a few issues getting some parts of phone to work...so had to switch back to 7.7 rom

Sorry, I did test it. I have now re-flashed and can report it to be 26.97 (I have edited my post).
This is strange - the total is only 46.27, where-as other ROM flashers are getting their totals much higher. I wonder if Mo3ulla got this higher, the free program memory would also go up.
I don't know how to test speed, except if my card game goes slow
Tomal is the best
I also have flashed tomal ranju's 7.7 rom and its really col and stable but what i noticed is it drains my battery very much is this normal or have i done something wrong?
anyways ranju 7.7 is the best for me.
and guys keep up the great work
Well, Ran's 7.7 is the one I like the most now as he provides me the apps I need. No wasting time to install , just up rom and use. I'm looking forward to the official release of version 8.0 from Tomal. Stable, no irritating problems though there're small problems with my EXEC, not sure whether those happen to other universals.
Cheers!
wm5
im going back to the wm5 aku3.5
my prblem is solved in sdhc driver. damn it it was sdbus.dll and sdmemory.dll after all.
ryt now im sticking on video call my uni is lame w/o it.
for cooked ROM probably ranju 7.7
but i got all apps for wm6 the contol panel thing so i used rdosti clean ROM v5-v10
ill wait rdosti v15 it could be 64mb free of RAM i think. joke
nice looking:
pamquang diamond rom
cons: freezes, call slow response. sometimes shutdown automatically..
efn video call- it didnt work on mine
rdosti - lots of memory free but apps its up to you spot wer the good version is because my opera 9.5 build 405 not run on v9.1..
hey anybody cud share a files/hacks to run opera 9.5 on wm5.

That's the main point! Most people didn't try all ROMs and therefore their oppinion isn't accurate...
I've tried all, except rDosti v10 and my favorite are rDosti v9.1 (I don't use because we can't install VCall out cab) (probably the fastest) and PDAVIET 2.61 OS 19949 (the 2nd fastest ROM)!
PS: I don't have problems to set the alarm on PDAVIET's ROM!
Ranju 7.7 .......
Tried Darkforce, mu3ulla and rDosti.
rDosti is my favourite, because
- his ongoing support
- quick problem solving with new ROM
- a lot of free program memory
Only things I miss at the moment:
- Flash disk (where is it? What is it?)
- good BT support (Please leave BT enabled when connection to my GPS!)
But, hey, he's posting a new ROM every day, so maybe next week?

Manilla

Hello everyone, I've been searching all these roms but it seems that there isn't one single ROM with manilla. Can I install this on Universal? Tks
Short answer? No.
Long answer? Manilla (aka TouchFlow 3D) requires far too much RAM and processing resources to run properly on our Uni's. The biggest problem is (seems to be?) the lack of decent hardware drivers, since HTC wrote custom ones for the TouchPro, etc.
Of course it's a few months since I even attempted using any of the ports, so things may have changed, though I somehow doubt it.

But what about the 2D version?
I had one in my qtek 9090 (which is older than uni) and it ran just fine!
u can use this big-mem ROM by Cotulla: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=468776 and install manila2d .. but if u have 64Mb uni, u will be memory low for something more with manila (i got 15-10Mb free with my 64Mb-Uni) .. its work very nice in portal mode.. and its so big, great for in-car use or similar
after install of manila, they will be small, not on full screen.. you must find VGA theme for manila2d .. search on forum
this is easy for install, ask if is problem find .. i think that on 128Mb uni it is will work very nice
//sorry for bad eng, big hello from Serbia
I would recommend to use ThrottleLauncher (just Google for it).
With the TF3D theme and with the Manila WeatherPanel installed it is great and fast (10-15 MB RAM, yes I know, but with a 128 MB Uni it's awesome ). But if you turn on the flash clock you will see, how many resources it needs, and it works only with 2-3 fps. But at least it is very customizable...
That's it,
DOMy

1 `interesting` or `stupid` question for Cotulla

Hi man..Look...I tryed before Win 6.1 in Qtek s100...Worked fine...After 10 days,he is dead... : ) reason ? stupid touch sensor dont work...I buyed new HTC TyTN and I use official Win 6.0....Well,problem is bcs HTC TyTN have 400 Mhz and I think that is he 10-15% slower than Intel processor with 416...Well,best thing in your OS is CPU Clock Speed in control panel.Offcourse,I dont have it in my TyTN.Cpu clock speed really work and increase perfomances in Qtek, especially if you check Agressive mode..I tryet to transfer only CPL file (Control panel extension) from your rom to `mine`...This file appear control panel.I check Agressive mode, but I am not sure, that this work.He cant save `my settings`...After reboot,I need again to check.I am not interest to try to change speed, bcs Samsung processors is not good (or cant) to be overclocked, but this Agressive mode in your ROM really increase performance. My question is: This is some Windows optimization or some thing for CPU ? Bcs,in Qtek no more lag for example in Start menu... I want same in TyTN...
Agressive mode 100% work if I dont close that window in control panel ! I tryed to scroll Start menu.Much faster ! but when I type ok he close window and dont save...How to make him to save?second stupid question is: Every Windows 6.1 have CPU clock speed ? (I only need Agressive mode, bcs than I dont have lag and phone is really faster)...This os Win 6.0 (official HTC ) work very good (yes, and MMS...camera fantastic...),so I dont want to change rom...But if every Win 6.1 have this `system` in control panel,I will change rom...Tnx friend.
Samsung and Intel CPU's are not the same and also WM can't manage CPU clock at all. If you want to clock your Tytn with Samsung CPU you can use another program called ClockWizard. More info here in Russian
http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=43257&st=330 or for English you can use google translate.
TyTN is not suported...
Well Agresive mode really do something...PDA is really faster, probably some Win optimization...Only I cant save it,but I will try to solve problem...
Very Fast,Fast...and other mods dont work on samsung, but agressive yes...
"device speed" is not made by Microsoft for WM6,it's developed by Cotulla, which depend on Intel PXA270 Processor only.
