red light, no switch on, blank screen - General Topics

A while ago I put my XDA on charge and got a red led. Then I found the unit wouldn't switch on. I bought a new battery which after charging in the cradle didn't work either. After a while however it seemed to fix itself and started up from scratch losing all stored data. ....and then it went off again.
After a lot of fiddling about I find that when it goes into fault I can remove the battery and leave it for an hour or more. Then replace the battery and she'll start up. Sometimes run for a few days sometimes an only an hour.
I've also swapped out the internal battery and there's no obvious mechanical failiure on the circuit board.
Any body seen similar, have a resolution or shall I chuck it away.
Anybody need a spare screen?!

Wifi causing Universal to turn off

as i said in the title when i use wifi i get a about 2-5 mins of use out of it, but then it will cause the pda to shut down, even when i have full battery and its plugged in, and it wont completely turn back on till i plug in a charger, occasionally even this wont help for a while, i also have had some problems with the battery, like sometimes it wont be recognised by the pda so it wont turn on and will show the red light when i try to charge it, could that cause this problem?
Sounds like new battery time.
My last one used to die if I had the backlight on for more than a few mins, it lasted a year (the original battery).
Got a new cheap one from eBay, seems to be going fine with good battery life.
thanks i thought this was the problem so i bought a new battery last week, still hasnt come yet though
Hi
i have the same prob too, but when i plug it into the charger it won't turn off!!!
this is an actual common problem possibly residing to a specific batch load or maybe more. the problem will get worse and in short it's not a battery it's a mainboard problem with a sensor or a part that becomes hypersensative to heat. I think it's part of the same circuit that shuts the device down if the cpu or battery overheats but I can't proove it yet. I've had 2 of these phones so far. 1 3 got t-mobile t swap for an mda vario 2 at the time as the phone wouldn't stay stable for more then a few minutes. same result with 2 like 4 like replacements they sent me. ifinally said enough I want the closest thing tech spec wise to it. the 2nd one was my wifes which she barely used now that shes moved on to a different phone I've started playing a bit with it as it's over 12 months old. and I put it back into the box and up on a shelf as soon as it started doing the rebooting thing like the first one. NO WONDER ORANGE START DISCONTINUING IT AS WELL DID T-MOBILE UK.

After reading a few of the posts aftr mine, I set out on a mission to determine the more exact reason for this cause. I found the unlike most mobile e.g: sony, lg, nokia etc. this phone would nout power on from the mains adapter without the battery. I figured initially it must have been the manufacture thinking this is not a laptop and the mains adaptr was intendd to charge batteries and then run the device. this also prevents data loss or file system corruption incase your mains charger comes loose from the device while playing. however I found that by putting my finger (when your finger tips are lightly moist and conductive) over the battery terminals on the device it would infact power on and work. now in light of this there are 6 terminals to make conduct with the battery the outter 2 on each extreme end are your + and - . the 2 inner ones are likely then to be battery voltage sensor and battery temprature.
so I said great way to test a theory. I unplugged the mains charger and started downloading files from my pc to the memory card over wireless. this of coarse caused the battery and the device to heat up very quickly. within about 10 minutes it did as expected and shut off. then when pressing the power button could not make it back to the main today screen either it would shut off on the windows mobile splash screen OR it would shut off during the first splash at bootloader.
I then removed the now very warm battery and put my finger on the battery terminals making sure the 2 center pins were touching my finger. voila th device powered on and booted up just fine. I then went back to doing file transfers and it never shut off on me again as lon as I held my finger on the battery terminals. in short I fooled it into thinking the battery was there but but that the temprature was fine. wm6.1 from ranji's 7.1 could tell there was no bettery to charge but the temp sensor was fooled. conclusion: the reason 2 replacement handsets in the past sent to me by t-mobile conitune to fail was not infact an internal problem that was main board related it was the battery incorrectly sending wrong temp info or a faulty battery that was getting to hot and the manufactures own safty device was shutting the device down to cool off the battery. this would be why in the past I would be able to just leave it off and eventallly it would work again. I felt like such a fool but at the same time I felt good that I got 1 traded for a vario and that now all I need to do to fix my mda pro is t get a new battery. I am man enough as you can tell to say wheni was wrong and I was. in light of this new info I would recommend the device to others but if you start getting random shut downs and turn offs during internet over wireless or gprs and the device is wamr ask your provider for a new battery or replace it yourself maybe even with a larger capacity one as it will likely resolve your problem. I know there are other posts i've done about this subject and I HOPE that those that have read them read this update as it applies to all htc universals regardless what branding they fall under.

Water Damaged but gets to Bootloader

So I wanted to see if my phone would survive a 20min dip in the pool and well it just may have. I waited a day for it dry and had it in rice to help draw out the water. It wouldnt turn on. I took it to ATT and they put in a new battery and it turned on but turned off. I left it hooked up to the charger overnight and woke up this morning to find it at the please insert SIM screen. Now I can only get it to the bootloader screen and it turns off. Anybody have some suggestions on things I can try to get it running again? Nothing is off limits since it not like i have to worry about breaking it....
Tilt2
Update: Plugged it back in the charger and it went all the way to sense again. It says low battery and to connect to charger even though it is, so I'm thinking new battery?
First all leave it to dry some more, another day or so,then try it,i would also get another battery .
by the sound of it the device had not dried properly before you tried to power it on.
good luck.
I just went to ATT to try another battery, but it wouldnt turn on now. Maybe the battery contacts on the phone need to be replaced, is there a place to get parts or to test what needs to be replaced. I have a multimeter and soldering iron.
When you dried it did you have the pc board exposed or has the case still been sealed?
good day.
still sealed. it turned on, i refuse to believe there is still water in there even if that is the fact.

Get a bag of rice, fill a large bowl halfway and put the disassembled device ontop then fill the rest of the bowl of the rice and leave for a coule days or so. It fixed my soaked Palm Pilot over 10 years ago.

Take out the battery, sim card etc, leave in a dry warm room for 2-3 days, do not be tempted to turn it on before this time.
Good luck, you may be lucky and it dries out fine, but if water has been in there whilst the device was on for some time, then it may be not good news.

I Refuse To Believe A Fact.. (there might be a tee shirt here )
But anyway I'm quoting someone that would know. Our devices are like ships in a bottle. Just 1 spec of moisture across 2 legs of an integrated circuit under power will lead to certain failure.
good day.
Update: Last night I gave it another go and the phone turned on again. Earlier in the day I tried bringing it to ATT but a new battery didnt help. When it turned on for me, it would switch from battery mode to charging mode when I plugged in the charger but would still say battery low please plug in charger. Also the charging light doesn't come up when I plug it in, though the led mightve been shorted. Should I be trying to Task 29 and reflash or is this definitely a hardware problem?
Update: Today, I task29 and reflashed the rom with no problem. I even made a phone call and received a call. The speaker may be dead because it didnt ring, but it did vibrate. The main problem seems to be the power management. The phone says the battery is low and turns off after a few minutes. IT does recognize the charger in the taskbar but still has the low battery message pop up. Is there a piece of hardware that is involved in the power management that can be replaced? I was looking at this: http://cnn.cn/shop/touch-pro2-flex-cable-extusb-connector-vibrate-module-p-8259.html

N5 dead, won't charge/turn on

OK, so long story short:
- Had water damage screw up the digitizer on my screen, middle vertical 1/3rd was unresponsive to touch, after time there'd be a million fake input events hammering the device
- Order replacement screen from Aliexpress
- Replacement screen is completely bunk (and crap quality), take video showing the seller the difference (my screen still displays perfectly so I can show nice A/B comparisons)
- I leave my phone on I think with the original screen, which probably will kill the battery very fast (as the device doesn't go to sleep during the fake input events)
- Phone dead
Now, there is nothing I can do to charge this freaking phone. I've tried everything from leaving it on a 2A charger for 24 hours, every button combination imaginable with volumes + power, disconnected the battery to hard reset, nothing, nothing is happening. I don't think its charging at all because normally the battery/charging circuit has a bit of warmth when charging, but there's absolutely nothing. Tried a Qi charge, nothing. Slow PC trickle charge, nothing.
Is my phone dead dead? Does anyone know how to try and potentially force a charge to the battery? I'll buy another battery from Aliexpress but I'm hesitant to spend too much money on it as the screen is pretty much bust and Nexus 6 is around the corner. I just want to get my pictures and stuff off the phone.
Water usually ruins more than one single thing. I never advise people spend money trying to fix anything, like the screen in your case, cause often more ends up being wrong.
Keep your money in the future and just replace water damaged devices.
I think you are out of luck anyway... Sorry to say.

If your phone doesn't turn on.. Then no, you can't recover your files. Tough luck. Backup all your important files from now on!

Just an FYI as I have managed to fix the dead battery issue. I ordered a battery from AliExpress (this one: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/100-...T9-BLT9-Battery-Free-Shipping/2005328706.html), and it arrived today.
I plugged in the battery, and the phone turned on when I asked it to (success!). Now can I save my old battery? I plugged it into a 2A charger, and pulled the old battery connection (while the phone was at the homescreen). The phone turned off, however turned on immediately to the low-level charging screen (battery icon with lightning bolt in it), this is with no battery plugged in. So I quickly plugged in the old dead battery while it was at that screen, and BOOM, it started to charge!
Left it on for a good bit, charged to 75%, and now I've got it connected to the PC and pulling my entire /sdcard/ contents before I wipe it.
Just an idea if anyone else has a super dead battery!

G Flex 2 keeps shutting down

I recently dropped my phone on the ground and the glass is now broken. But it worked normally for about 14 days. Then suddenly one day at work it shut down on its own. After that I wasn't able to start it. No reaction for any of the buttons, nor their combinations. Even when I plugged the charger in, no sign of life. I thought it's over.
Then the next day, I plugged the charger in and the screen with 0% battery appeared. So I left it charging, but when I came back to it (20 minutes) it was dead again. Not even the diode indicating it is charging. Again no response for the buttons, nothing. So I tried to disassemble it, disconnected everything. Put it together and viola! The screen indicating 0% battery was there again. I left it like that for a while, and when it was charged a little, I tried to start it. It started and normally worked. At least it seemed to, but after a while (1 - 3 minutes) while I was using it, it went to the dead phone again.
So I discovered, that when I disconnect the battery for a while and then connect it again, I am able to boot the phone. I was even able to do factory reset. I thought I got it and that it was some software fault. However after like 5 minutes (it downloaded all apps, logged to my google account, looked all ok) the screen shut down again and again the phone played dead.
Now I have the phone booted, and charging (almost 100% now). But I guess when I start using it again, it will again go to the dead mode (since it did it everytime after I used it a little, no specific action done, totally random).
I guess it has to be related to the broken glass. Maybe some water or humidity got through it and the phone is trying to save itself from damage by going to the dead mode. It's weird because sometimes (like now) the phone is OK when not used, normally chraging and not shutting down (now it's ON for about 40 minutes), but if it shuts down, it takes about 3 or 4 battery disconnect and connect again, before it boots to the main screen. Sometimes it just dies before the screen, sometimes it dies when I try to plug the charger in, really no idea what causes it.
How should I diagnose it? USB debugging and check the log when using it and when it dies? Or has anyone experienced this too? Or could the battery be damaged? Or can I somewhere set the phone to prevent from selfkilling actions? Today I will try my main board in my friends G Flex 2, to see if it's the board, or something else.

Adding the error log from console
OK so it was probably mother board fault, so I had to buy a new phone It is like 3 months, and I just yesterday accidentally poured some water on it, so i destroyed another one. It is still in warranty but I guess with water damage there is no warranty. Anyone knows where to find all the water damage indicators? Or is it even possible to make it look like there was no water damage?

Help! Nexus 5, new battery and blinking red light

That says it all really. I bought a nexus 5 battery from (hopefully) a reputable source. The battery had all the same markings as my original battery.
I looked online for a video on how to replace the battery. I followed it. Now it is charging, but there is a blinking red light. After some googling, this could mean that the battery is completely drained and it should take a little longer than normal to charge.
However, it's now been charging for about an hour and no change. I tried to turn it on and no dice.
Did ya get it fixed?
It's a similar behaviour what you describe to a G2 what I've seen so far. I think the only way to get it charging, is to charge the battery in a external charger, or better, checking the voltage. If it's too much undervolted (<3V) then the battery will likely be damaged. I think the device refuses to charge if the battery is too much drained, so it's possible that you can't get it working if you leave it in the N5.
Maybe try a more powerful charger and maybe a different USB cable. Leave the phone on the charger for a few hours.
Actually, after googling, I found an answer on a youtube, so I should probably put it here.
I had to take off the back cover again, remove the internal protector, and disconnect the battery. Then, when you plug in the phone, you should see the battery symbol on the screen (I did), turn the phone on and IMMEDIATELY plug the battery in.
That fixed it. The only thing I should add is that in order to put the back cover on you have to turn the phone off. Then, put the back cover on, and turn it back off.
I also screwed up my antenna during my battery change (I accidentally knocked it off) so I simply taped it back on with a little piece of electrical tape.

Thanks for this tip. I will try tonight, hope it doesn't burn the smartphone :fingers-crossed:
Update: Bingo!!! It worked! Though my battery being recent, it has got completely drained and doesn't recharge anymore after replacing the screen. But the phone works when connected to power cord. I will buy a new battery again. Thank you again for your help.
