Help! Nexus 5, new battery and blinking red light - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

That says it all really. I bought a nexus 5 battery from (hopefully) a reputable source. The battery had all the same markings as my original battery.
I looked online for a video on how to replace the battery. I followed it. Now it is charging, but there is a blinking red light. After some googling, this could mean that the battery is completely drained and it should take a little longer than normal to charge.
However, it's now been charging for about an hour and no change. I tried to turn it on and no dice.

Did ya get it fixed?

It's a similar behaviour what you describe to a G2 what I've seen so far. I think the only way to get it charging, is to charge the battery in a external charger, or better, checking the voltage. If it's too much undervolted (<3V) then the battery will likely be damaged. I think the device refuses to charge if the battery is too much drained, so it's possible that you can't get it working if you leave it in the N5.

Maybe try a more powerful charger and maybe a different USB cable. Leave the phone on the charger for a few hours.

Actually, after googling, I found an answer on a youtube, so I should probably put it here.
I had to take off the back cover again, remove the internal protector, and disconnect the battery. Then, when you plug in the phone, you should see the battery symbol on the screen (I did), turn the phone on and IMMEDIATELY plug the battery in.
That fixed it. The only thing I should add is that in order to put the back cover on you have to turn the phone off. Then, put the back cover on, and turn it back off.
I also screwed up my antenna during my battery change (I accidentally knocked it off) so I simply taped it back on with a little piece of electrical tape.

Thanks for this tip. I will try tonight, hope it doesn't burn the smartphone :fingers-crossed:
Update: Bingo!!! It worked! Though my battery being recent, it has got completely drained and doesn't recharge anymore after replacing the screen. But the phone works when connected to power cord. I will buy a new battery again. Thank you again for your help.

Busted K-JAM

Sometimes I let my battery run to empty. Everytime that happens I can still hit the power button and my K-Jam will do a soft reset and then turn off shortly afterwards. I let my phone die yesterday when I was on the road. It won't turn on and it doesn't appear to be charging. I checked the battery with a multi-meter and its showing 2.5V on a 3.7V battery. Is this too low for the phone to work? Can anyone think of a reason why it would be completely non-responsive? I bought the K-JAM on ebay and its not really sold in the U.S. Does anyone know somewhere I can bring in my K-Jam to get parts or at least some advice. Thanks for your help.

Lithium batteries behave differently from NiCads regarding charge discharge cycles.
Where NiCads *like* to be fully discharged before recharging, Lithium batteries *hate* it. They prefer to be topped up regular and often.
My guess is that you have a dead battery given the way that it has been abused (by being treated like a NiCad)
Really, I thought Li-ion was a deep cycle battery? Well should the phone show any signs of life if it is plugged in and has a dead battery? Is their a way to test the hardware without replacing the battery. If replacing the battery is neccessary. Do you know where I can find one? Thank you very much for all of your help.

I had the same problem some weeks ago. If the battery go down to much and wizard switch off then you have big problems because this ppc charge only when OS is loaded!
So if you are not able to switch on to charge it you have to charge the battery outside the phone.
This problem happen to me when i was traveling and i forget my charger at home... I bought another USB cable i cut it to take out the red and black wires, then i take out the battery from the wizard and put red wire on the pin with label (+) and black wire to the pin (-), the pin label are written on the battery. I put attention to don't make shortcuts and that wires and pin was touching and let 15 minutes to charge (natually the USB was attached to my laptop). Then disconnected USB cable from laptop, put the battery on wizard and switched on it pressing the power button few seconds. It booted up and when OS was loaded i connected the normal USB cable to the phone to finish to charge it.
Now i charge the battery before that reach 0%!
Thank you so much, I will try that as soon as I get home tonight. If I understand you correctly it sounds like battery charging is software based and not hardware based, which is a major design flaw. If this is the case I'm going to sell my k-jam, because that is bs. Do you know if Jasjar is designed the same way? Thanks for all of your help.

This works !!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the same problem. I thought my battery or my device was defect, but following this instructions I was able to charge my battery again !
THANKS A LOT
had the same problem some weeks ago.
battery was down so low, that after plugging in the wall charger my pda booted, just to switch off again after a few seconds.
so what i did was going into "serial boot mode" - that way imho the pad doesn't turn on wifi, bluetooth, sd card and things like that that drain battery too much. after some time the battery was loaded and i could reset the device and go on working with it.

You are a lifewsaver -- I woke up this morning to a dead battery and a device that wouldn't turn on and using your tip was able to revive it in a few minutes. I really can't imagine how someone could have designed a device that can't recharge a dead battery. Very dumb.

Like someone said..... Italians do it better !
Alessio.
Thanks Dalamario, it worked for me.
A small amount of electrolyte goes a long way
I just found this thread as my O2 Wizard did the same two days ago.
Once I realised which was positive and negative I just applied a fine lick of saliva onto the positive and negative terminals of the battery and the phone's battery terminals.....
Lo and behold, it worked !!!!
Shame I logged a call with O2 earlier today and they are sending out a replacement!!!
Frustratingly I put a friends battery in mine, transferred everything off and emptied the phone's memory!!!! grrrrr, I should have thought about it first.
To add to that...the standard battery is some cheap and nasty Chinese battery.
Sadly, all the aftermarket ones are mostly made in China too!
BTW. Drinking an acidic fizzy drink probably helped the revival process by making my saliva that little more acidic.
Unbelievable.
I had the same problem last night. The phone just went dead while I was working. I could not get the thing to take a charge overnight with a wall USB charger.
I took a cheap USB printer cable. Cut off one side. Isolated the black and red wires. Attached them to the +(red) and -(blk) on the battery for only two minutes. Put the battery back in the phone and turned it on. When it booted up I quickly put it on the USB charger again. And now it is charging as usual.
I guess someone may need to start marketing a USB with blk/red pigtails for emergency charging.
Thank you soooo much!
Dropped my MDA Vario in my pint of beer the other night - had 48 hours of worry as it dried out and things began to work again. Then had the problems described before - not able to charge, red warning LED. Didn't want to put it in for servicing as it is unlocked (and smells of beer!) but found this solution which works perfectly (I used blu-tack to attach the terminals)!
Excellent!

red light, no switch on, blank screen

A while ago I put my XDA on charge and got a red led. Then I found the unit wouldn't switch on. I bought a new battery which after charging in the cradle didn't work either. After a while however it seemed to fix itself and started up from scratch losing all stored data. ....and then it went off again.
After a lot of fiddling about I find that when it goes into fault I can remove the battery and leave it for an hour or more. Then replace the battery and she'll start up. Sometimes run for a few days sometimes an only an hour.
I've also swapped out the internal battery and there's no obvious mechanical failiure on the circuit board.
Any body seen similar, have a resolution or shall I chuck it away.
Anybody need a spare screen?!

Water Damaged but gets to Bootloader

So I wanted to see if my phone would survive a 20min dip in the pool and well it just may have. I waited a day for it dry and had it in rice to help draw out the water. It wouldnt turn on. I took it to ATT and they put in a new battery and it turned on but turned off. I left it hooked up to the charger overnight and woke up this morning to find it at the please insert SIM screen. Now I can only get it to the bootloader screen and it turns off. Anybody have some suggestions on things I can try to get it running again? Nothing is off limits since it not like i have to worry about breaking it....
Tilt2
Update: Plugged it back in the charger and it went all the way to sense again. It says low battery and to connect to charger even though it is, so I'm thinking new battery?
First all leave it to dry some more, another day or so,then try it,i would also get another battery .
by the sound of it the device had not dried properly before you tried to power it on.
good luck.
I just went to ATT to try another battery, but it wouldnt turn on now. Maybe the battery contacts on the phone need to be replaced, is there a place to get parts or to test what needs to be replaced. I have a multimeter and soldering iron.
When you dried it did you have the pc board exposed or has the case still been sealed?
good day.
still sealed. it turned on, i refuse to believe there is still water in there even if that is the fact.

Get a bag of rice, fill a large bowl halfway and put the disassembled device ontop then fill the rest of the bowl of the rice and leave for a coule days or so. It fixed my soaked Palm Pilot over 10 years ago.

Take out the battery, sim card etc, leave in a dry warm room for 2-3 days, do not be tempted to turn it on before this time.
Good luck, you may be lucky and it dries out fine, but if water has been in there whilst the device was on for some time, then it may be not good news.

I Refuse To Believe A Fact.. (there might be a tee shirt here )
But anyway I'm quoting someone that would know. Our devices are like ships in a bottle. Just 1 spec of moisture across 2 legs of an integrated circuit under power will lead to certain failure.
good day.
Update: Last night I gave it another go and the phone turned on again. Earlier in the day I tried bringing it to ATT but a new battery didnt help. When it turned on for me, it would switch from battery mode to charging mode when I plugged in the charger but would still say battery low please plug in charger. Also the charging light doesn't come up when I plug it in, though the led mightve been shorted. Should I be trying to Task 29 and reflash or is this definitely a hardware problem?
Update: Today, I task29 and reflashed the rom with no problem. I even made a phone call and received a call. The speaker may be dead because it didnt ring, but it did vibrate. The main problem seems to be the power management. The phone says the battery is low and turns off after a few minutes. IT does recognize the charger in the taskbar but still has the low battery message pop up. Is there a piece of hardware that is involved in the power management that can be replaced? I was looking at this: http://cnn.cn/shop/touch-pro2-flex-cable-extusb-connector-vibrate-module-p-8259.html

Bad Battery?

Figured I would put this out to the forum for thoughts, but i am pretty sure my battery is bad in my GTab. The tablet no longer runs, unless it is plugged into the outlet. While on, the battery says 0% charging all the time. If i pull the plug out while the tab is powered on the tablet shuts down. While powered off on while on the led does not light up green or red. My GTab is out of warranty as of January so I assume this is a hardware issue and i am screwed, unless i can get a replacement battery somewhere. Anyone have any thoughts?
Check the battery connector cable. See this thread.
Unplugged
Yes, follow the link above. The problem is probably that your battery has come unplugged inside. It is really easy to fix. Be sure to put some tape on the internal plug once you reconnect everything. That will prevent it from happening again.
Thanks guys worth a shot. Nothing to loose.
thank you
Thanks guys, you rock. Got home and took my tab apart and sure enough the connector was loose. Works great.now.

N5 dead, won't charge/turn on

OK, so long story short:
- Had water damage screw up the digitizer on my screen, middle vertical 1/3rd was unresponsive to touch, after time there'd be a million fake input events hammering the device
- Order replacement screen from Aliexpress
- Replacement screen is completely bunk (and crap quality), take video showing the seller the difference (my screen still displays perfectly so I can show nice A/B comparisons)
- I leave my phone on I think with the original screen, which probably will kill the battery very fast (as the device doesn't go to sleep during the fake input events)
- Phone dead
Now, there is nothing I can do to charge this freaking phone. I've tried everything from leaving it on a 2A charger for 24 hours, every button combination imaginable with volumes + power, disconnected the battery to hard reset, nothing, nothing is happening. I don't think its charging at all because normally the battery/charging circuit has a bit of warmth when charging, but there's absolutely nothing. Tried a Qi charge, nothing. Slow PC trickle charge, nothing.
Is my phone dead dead? Does anyone know how to try and potentially force a charge to the battery? I'll buy another battery from Aliexpress but I'm hesitant to spend too much money on it as the screen is pretty much bust and Nexus 6 is around the corner. I just want to get my pictures and stuff off the phone.
Water usually ruins more than one single thing. I never advise people spend money trying to fix anything, like the screen in your case, cause often more ends up being wrong.
Keep your money in the future and just replace water damaged devices.
I think you are out of luck anyway... Sorry to say.

If your phone doesn't turn on.. Then no, you can't recover your files. Tough luck. Backup all your important files from now on!

Just an FYI as I have managed to fix the dead battery issue. I ordered a battery from AliExpress (this one: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/100-...T9-BLT9-Battery-Free-Shipping/2005328706.html), and it arrived today.
I plugged in the battery, and the phone turned on when I asked it to (success!). Now can I save my old battery? I plugged it into a 2A charger, and pulled the old battery connection (while the phone was at the homescreen). The phone turned off, however turned on immediately to the low-level charging screen (battery icon with lightning bolt in it), this is with no battery plugged in. So I quickly plugged in the old dead battery while it was at that screen, and BOOM, it started to charge!
Left it on for a good bit, charged to 75%, and now I've got it connected to the PC and pulling my entire /sdcard/ contents before I wipe it.
Just an idea if anyone else has a super dead battery!
