Please help me fix my phone - General Questions and Answers

Few days back I was charging my phone, suddenly it stopped charging at 5%, I can't tell i the charger shook or not but I just turned it off and continued charging. It normally shows the Samsung logo while charging but for some reasons unknown to me it didn't, I didn't think much of it until I tried to turn it on, it turned on without displaying anything and I quickly heard my notifications dropping but my phone was just blank, what could've the problem and how can I fix it pleas

What model of Samsung do you have?
Have you tried a different charger and/or cable?
Have you cleaned the USB port?

That's what ChatGPT states:

or send it to a better repair shop.. but yeah out of your hands now
What I'd try as a repairmen is first reseat the ribbon cable / replace the display and check... but given they tried replacing ic chip now the phone is even harder to diagnose... you can't trust them that they soldered the chip correctly
There are MANY posts with samsung phones and dead displays... Seems to be a firmware bug, present across their whole lineup

TBH that sounds like a load of bovine excrement. These shops replace batteries, mainboards, and display panels all the time. One of those is the problem. If they can't get the parts, that's one thing; but if they simply tell you they can't fix it, I call bull. It probably won't be cheap, but they should be able to.

Captivate Hardware Reset Button

Hey, Just thought I should post this... To reset the Captivate without removing the battery, there is a connection on the board called "TP". It is right below the MMC card and you can barely see it with the phone's case on it. Here is a picture of the rear case removed. The TP is the white dot. It is covered with white paint to avoid accidental connection.

You can stick a needle through and ground "TP" to the side of the SDCard. Your phone will reset.
It's a signal line. and it's separated from bat+ by 1000ohms.
Thats very useful. Thanks!
Will this reset work on "soft" bricks and/or paperweight states?
Sent from Gingerbread on a Captivate using XDA Premium App
It will work on soft bricks. I'd like to see how a hard brick would react to UART communications. I've got one comming, so I will be able to tell you more soon.
This is a great find for flashing addicts. Thanks so much for sharing this. When I get to my PC I will hit the thanks button.
Sent from Gingerbread on a Captivate using XDA Premium App
I've found it quite useful... but I've been doing some non-standard things with my phone...
That looks sick! Someone's been having fun. Has your phone orbited the Earth yet?
Haha not quite... I've been researching non-invasive methods of recovering bricks, and it requires invasive techniques for analysis. Its amazing how many people brick their phones and how expensive jtag methods are.
Doesn't work on Hard Bricks. Tested.
So is it possible to fix a soft brick using this method instead of making a jig?
On my way home right now, guess I will find out soon enough, thank you
Wasn't quite sure what it was gonna do, and hoping it would magically get me into download mode, where the usb or power wouldn't. big down side, it botch'd something in my hardware, and my battery will no longer charge, can not run the phone without being pluged into the wall or pc. unbricked using a standard ol jig, flashed to 2.1 via 1 click, dunno if it just fried battery or did something else. Any ideas what to trouble shoot first? i've tried reflashing, few different roms, tried reseting battery stats, tried factory reset via settings, and via 1 click with no luck, wont be able to test another battery till tomorrow

You did something else....
I used this method about 50 times consecutively. No ideas for you on your issue.
This reboots the phone and that's it. Its easy for bench testing purposes. How long did you hold it?
Just until the screen shut off, then released, not really what sure happened. Is there something rom side that controls the charging of the battery or is it strictly hardware?
Just hoping battery just decided to die, needed excuse to get a bigger one anyways.
Edit-Yeah definetly thinking battery is bad now, it showed 100% charge this morning finally, but as soon as i unplugged from wall it died, plugged it back in and was showing it dead again. Soo hmm, dunno sound like bad battery? fixin to make the 30min trip to ATT store to see if they can check it or swap it.
just wanted to say, i wasn't trying to imply the reset you pointed out had killed the phone, i just wasn't quite sure what happened, and this had been one of the last things i had done.
I just didn't realize a battery could go that quickly, had it tested today, and the guy at store said i was the first person he could tell without a shadow of a doubt there battery was dead.
1500mAH battery, and it read dead at first then full charge on tester at 28mAH.
This looks very interesting and I would like to try it out. Before I try it, I was wondering if you could explain it more in depth like if the battery should be in the phone, if it is necessary for the battery to be fully charged and if this method will work on all Captivates. I also noticed a number on your sd card slot that is different than mine but I assume all phones have a different one. Thanks in advance

[Q] [HELP] Note 10.1 Sudden Death

Hey guys,
Not sure what has happened to my note. I remember I only charged it overnight and in the morning I tried to turn it on and it stuck in the SAMSUNG NOTE 10.1 booting screen. So I did a quick search and I pressed power button + vol up button. After trying it a few times without any luck, my note suddenly went to this state (TV noise like - see pic). I could not do anything to it. Could anyone help me with this please? I am pretty noob in android device and never done any rooting and stuffs but pretty handy with PC. Thanks guys. Any help would be really appreciated.

Anyone? urgently need help here

not sure, I think it's either power off from a drained battery or just home screen. I charged it overnight and it couldn't be turned on anymore in the next morning.

Similar to my daughter's 8010. It kept freezing and would sometimes show a screen like that. Samsung replaced the Motherboard in the end.

If you're out by just a month or 2 I'd claim expected warranty. In Oz if the warranty is out by a small amount you can get it fixed under warranty because it is expected that the item will still be running outside the warranty period. It's ridiculous to have an item fail just out of warranty. It is expected to work for a while longer, not quit a week or month after the warranty ends...

[Q] HTC Sensation XE Dead while charging.

My trusty HTC Sensation XE running ViperS 2.0.2 (S-Off) just died on me.
Last thing i did was charge the battery and it suddenly died. The phone did not come into contact with water and didn't fall. The led light doesn't even turn on when the charger is connected. Luckily my wife has the exact same phone so i could test some things. The charger works fine on her phone. Swapped the batteries and her battery does not work in my phone. My battery works fine in hers. So it must be something with the phone itself.
I've read a lot of stuff on the internet today, but nothing has helped so far. Things i tried:
Booting to recovery (Vol down + Power) does nothing.
Connected the phone to my PC, Doesn't even get detected.
Remove SIM, SD and try to boot (normally and recovery), nothing
If anyone has any ideas i would be grateful to hear them.
I would try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522351
Hi Shantur. Thanks for the quick reply. I will try this when i get home. Seems promissing.
Hi Shantur, just tried the guide to unbrick my phone. Unfortunantly my phone does not get detected. I tried 2 different PC's and even tried disabling automount like the guide states, but nothing. (See screenshot) I used the Latest Ubuntu 14.04 btw.
Any other thoughts ?

try this
remove simcard,sdcard and battery
charge the device as it is for 4-5 hours and put them back
switch on the device and see if you have results
Hi rzr86, I will try that. So the phone just needs to be attached to the power? It won't be charging if there's no battery. Just making sure...

it charges the device somewhere internally
i don't remember what exactly
I removed the battery, sim and sd card earlier yesterday morning. It had been lying around for hours without power. I connected it to the power supply and left it there for about 9 hrs. After putting everything back, the phone is still dead. Unless anyone has another idea, I'm afraid it's just paperweight...

Hi Rzr86, I had a quick google for jtag, and it looks like it requires special hardware. I don't know if this is something worth doing myself or if there are any phoneshops here in the Netherlands that could do that.

Hi Rzr86,
Thanks for the info. I'm afraid the phone just isn't worth the costs any more to get it fixed.
I already had a backup plan.. It's my wife's birthday today and she really wants an iPhone. So i'm getting her one so i can get her Senation XE
Seemed like a better investment than fixing my own phone and getting her a crappy gift...

Stuck in recovery/volume down stuck

So I dropped my phone in water a few days ago. After leaving it in rice overnight, nothing seemed wrong except for the fact that my volume down button didn't work half the time, and sometimes it would go off by itself (I would be browsing on my phone and suddenly the volume would go all the way down by itself, as if someone was holding the volume down button). The problem disappeared soon, so I forgot about it. But today, when I tried to change my volume, it wouldn't work at all, so I decided to restart the phone to see if that would fix it. Bad idea, because now no matter what, the phone always boots to recovery. It seems like my phone is registering that the volume button is always being held down, so every time I boot it up, it goes to recovery. Is there any way to bypass this? I can still press down on the button like I normally would be to, so it's not physically stuck.
Pop the back off of it and check the volume down tab to see if its physically stuck or not. The moisture may have caused some corrosion buildup in the tiny aluminum piece that gives it the spring back when released. If its stuck you can try and play with it to see if it'll come loose or try replacing the ribbon cable all together.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. I've opened the back (which was painstakingly hard), and the button seems to be fine. It seems like there's no difference between that one and the other buttons - it still springs back up when pushed. What do you mean by replacing the ribbon cable? Any other ideas?

No, I come here and mostly just read thru the forums. My schedule isn't as nice as it used to be so I don't get to play much anymore. I'm looking forward to the zenphone tho because I'm thinking the x64 Intel processors will re-light some new excitement for me.

I would probably remove the motherboard and sister board and give them a close look over for some sign of damage or corrosion and maybe use a q-tip with rubbing alcohol to wipe over any I find. Just don't get it on any around the base of the chipset. I think the ribbon cable is soldered to the board if I remember correctly so replacement would be difficult. If its not, replace it.

Then you can directly go find Xiaomi repair center to find out the problem. Warranty should cover this issue.
Show them the screenshot to prove to them.
