It's a good phone, lots of functionality and software options.
It should be a great phone but there are three things that do annoy me that I notice all the time.
The side fingerprint sensor combined with power button isn't nice to use in some circumstances, especially if fingers are slightly damp and it doesn't read the print, refuses to unlock and you're trying to press the power button to PIN unlock instead and it registers too many attempts.
The screen is just a bit too narrow. I miskey on it a lot more than with my Axon 7.
Another screen thing, when attempting to touch a selection on a web page, the accuracy when zoomed out is not as good as my Axon 7 and I have to zoom in first. Sounds trivial but is quite annoying and here I am comparing a 900 dollar phone back to a 400 dollar phone and not finding the cheaper one to be a worse experience.
The whinges out of the way, there is a heck of a lot of good about the S10e to enjoy.
Garbage
Bootloader is locked so that right there makes me give it 1 star. The phone is mine so I should have the ability to root it if I want. C'mon Samsung or anyone affiliated with them, let us unlock the fu**ing bootloader; your warranty is sh*t anyway. Peace!!
I'm pretty happy with the hardware, if you could unlock the bootloader. Inevitably Google changes something that you can only revert with something like Xposed. Or there's OneUI stuff you can't change (like moving or getting rid of the clock on the left of status bar).
A few minor things I miss not being rooted. Battery is a little on the small side. I came from a Droid Turbo, and that thing was a tank so I didn't need a case.
A lot of little things about OneUI I don't care for, and can't change. But my main gripe is notifications on this phone are a nightmare. It took me FOREVER to find and setup an app to give it a notification light, and then get notification reminders to work properly (still isn't perfect). And yet with the chaos of too damn many notification options, it STILL is inadequate and inflexible - if your app doesn't let you set its own notification sound, or OneUI ignores it, you have only the default system or ringtone sounds. You can't otherwise set a different sound for text notifications.
I guess the more I think about it, the lower my rating goes. It's working pretty good for me, now, after DOZENS OF HOURS searching out workarounds for mods that were easily done in a custom rom. And on that basis I have to give it only 3 stars.
I might actually consider trading out for the Pixel 4a, which looks to have a similar footprint. But no wireless charging would be a deal-breaker.
Missing certain features to make me love it 100% but I am pretty happy with it. My first galaxy phone (had the nexus and the epic 4g which were both terrible). Besides that I had an Asus Zenfone 2 and an Axon 7.
This is a really nice device. Good build quality. I\ve had better for the same price or cheaper.
I am very happy with this phone after losing the fight with my Sony phones to get them to work with VoLTE in Australia. the S10e is a good size, (not quite as good as the Xperia compacts), and is responsive to most commands. the battery lasts really well and the screen is very good.The fingerprint sensor drives me nuts and works only randomly. The finger print sensor on the Xperia XZ2 and XZ3 work really well and I miss that. I have a Galaxy tablet and the finger print sensor is no good on that either. All in all, a quality phone that will hopefully last me a few years.

Have you checked the quality of your fingerprints? My mother had the same issue, turns out her fingers have almost no fingerprints. The fingerprint scanner on the S10e is awesome and you should not be having any issue whatsoever.

I am sure after years of being in trade work my finger prints are compromised, but the Xperia XZ2 and XZ3 worked perfectly with my fingers, where the S10e is hit and miss even for my wife who's hands are not abused like mine. Typically repeatedly get the message "cover the entire fingerprint sensor". Sometimes it work instantly, other times even the facial recognition does not work, but most of the time it does. Love the phone though.
I haven't seen any real review of the fingerprint sensor - only comments about the position on the screen.
Since there is no face or iris detection like on the Note 9, the fingerprint sensor will have to be pretty good.
Any ideas about this?

Well i hope they have improved the under screen scanner from the S10 plus because it was garbage. I actually sold my s10 plus because it was so unreliable.
There is face unlock but if it works like the s10 plus it is not secure and can be spoofed with a picture of yourself. I didnt use that feature due to this on the S10 plus and since the fingerprint scanner was trash ended up using a pin/pattern.
I didnt spend $1500 on a 2019 device to use old unlock tech lim

They should have brought back the retina scanner to secure the face unlock
About 11:30 in you'll see the fingerprint sensor test. Appears flawless according to Unbox Therapy. Most people who had issues with the S10 fingerprint sensor had those issues due to the screen protectors they were using, even though they blame the phone.

I was using the factory installed screen protector on my S10 plus and the scanner was still terribly unreliable.
And Lew was not unlocking from a black screen in that video either which made a big difference on my s10 plus.
If i hit the power button to view the lock screen then unlocked it was more reliable but from a locked black screen it was less than 50% reliable.

I still think it had something to do with the Samsung screen protectors too, even though they claimed they were designed for that purpose. I do not use a screen protector at all. If anything happens to my screen it costs me 29 bucks to get a new one so I generally don't have any sensitivity issues.

Ah, gotcha'. When I look at that, though, I also add in the $13 a month for a total cost of $341 over 2 years, including one screen replacement. Not saying it's a ripoff or anything. I have used my insurance and was glad to have it. I just like to look at the total cost.

Yes so not secure at all like the S10 plus..totally useless.
They really should have left the retina scanner on the newer stuff....losing that is a problem.

I totally agree! I even think note 9 was hands down the best true note phone the made.
The ultrasonic FP sensor is not an improved one or 2nd gen. or something, it's the same one used in the s10 series, now placed up.

Yes, I agree with you. I went from a nexus with it in the back as well, then the moto fingerprint reader at the base in the front to the back, and now it's going to the front again. I'm 80% sure I've disliked each transition but thelis iteration makes me the most nervous. The only thing I like about Apple is the Face ID as it's very quick. Though I don't like having my phone unlocked each time I pull it out. Plus, my work has strict security rules for keeping locked.

Well thats not good because it sucked on the S10 plus and is the main reason i got rid of it.
I could have a very short stay on the Note 10 plus if it is as bad....unfortunate since its an amazing device but being able to reliably and consistently unlock your device on the 1st attempt is a basic feature.

Business requires it to be locked?? Omg remember the nexus with the stars back, was totally ahead of its time! I loved it. I'm actually getting use to the fingerprint and face unlock of the note, has tons of settings, and not to let it unlock after recognizing the face

Yes, in order for me to have work email on my phone, corporate security policy requires using a pin with 7 numbers/letters and not just 4, or using a fingerprint reader, but no face unlock. Fun stuff.
Nexus had such a great fp reader! Was pretty responsive and the same place as the note 9. Will need to get used to maybe using my thumb now?

Oh wow, what secrets do u have on your phone lol. I'm talking about the nexus 4 but ur right! I had the 5x and loved it !! The gestures too felt so intuitive not a gimmick.. I'm use to it already. Took like 2 days lol. I wish the punch hole was in the corner tho. But it is what it be

It often doesn't recognise 4 or 5 attempts in a row, then locking me out from further biometrical login and I have to use my PIN to get into my phone.
I was kind of expecting for this forum to be full of this problem. Is it only me then?

I am on Android 10 already.
It already starts when registering a fingerprint. It constantly says "Press a little harder" when I'm already pressing my thumb right through the screen.
It got that bad after Samsung published the update after people found out their ****ty fingerprint sensor can be fooled by having a screen protector on.
Since then, my fingerprint sensor has been pretty much all but useless.

im very dissapointed with that fingerprint sensor on my predecessor p30 pro is it shame.. slow and inaccurate, maybe This is due to plastic foil but thats Thinnest foil What ever exists
It only works well if your fingers are little moisturized. Otherwise, it failed often

Yes it's rubbish. Worst fingerpront scanner on any phone I've owned. The poor scanner, dropped calls and scrolling issues stop this phone from being 10/10. All very big problems too. I would have kept my Note 8 and not bought this phone had I known.
I just don't use it, lol. Actually I don't use any lock screen at all, not even swipe. I find them annoying. I hide all my stuff in Termux which the average user or theif wouldn't think to look, or even know what they are looking at, lol. I could always lock it or erase it remotely with a few clicks on Google. As long as it's turned on and connected to the internet.

I've stopped using the fingerprint scanner altogether and now use facial recognitiong (quick) which works flawlessly.
Pixel 4A should have face unlock. Many devices are having face unlock. Even though it's not as secure it should be there as an option. It doesn't have infrared sensor so can't work in dark but it's not necessary. It should not work with eyes closed. It should be using the camera only for face unlock as many devices are doing it. As it has only a camera in front on top it should be capable.
It used to be there in older versions of android hidden in setting under smart lock and you could set up trusted face. Google needs to add back face unlock in the latest version of android and there should be an option to tick directly skip lockscreen or stay on lockscreen.
You'll likely hear the same argument from many people on here but I'll start. The 4a is not a flagship phone and face unlock, to me anyway, feels like a flagship feature. I'm comfortable with fingerprint unlock.

I agree, Pixel 4a should have a face unlock. Would be great if it was possible to add it by a mod.

I upgraded from a Moto G7 Play (!) which had face unlock. Nifty feature but not a make/break capability for me if imager is on rear and responds instantly. I knew 4a did not natively support facial recognition before pre-ordering. Those complaining didn't do their homework.
One of the reasons I chose the 4a was for the fingerprint sensor. I hate face unlock.

Ofcourse appreciate the finger print scanner in this pandemic phase with everyone wearing mask. But combination of both face unlock and fingerprint scanner unlock would be amazing.

No and there won't be. If you're hoping for facelock to magically appear in the Pixel 4A, sorry to burst your bubble, but it ain't happening.
It should have face unlock. However, you have heard it- it ain't happening. However, if you "hate" face unlock so much and if Pixel 4A had face unlock, there is always 100% guarantee that you could disable or even not set it up. Thank you.

Coming from a Note 10+ the fingerprint reader works great; it is much more responsive than the Note 10+. I don't use face unlock (I haven't used it since the Galaxy Nexus), so I can't talk to that. I'm not comfortable using face unlock. It is still less secure than fingerprint or a PIN. I don't care what Apple or Samsung says.
I did like the iris scanner on my Note 8. Though, I am not sure how secure it was.
I have no issues with fingerprint....works mostly first time....sometimes when finger is wet I need a 2nd try....Face unlock works okay most of the time....lighting conditions do play a roll....especially bad if the room is dark and a light shine from behind....overall much better then my previous samsung phones

Good for you. What previous Samsung phone did you have?
It's really worse than Note9. But Note9 had different tech (iris scanner and not ordinary front facing camera, hardware finger print scanner and not under the screen scanner).
I had the s5,s6+,s9,s10 and s21 ultra...on my previous phones I made sure to scan one finger into multiple fingers, so it had 5 copies of my finger... that helped mostly with it reading my finger print the first time.. saw a video on it on YouTube. With the s22 ultra I only have one fingerprint registered and works great...i did make sure i scan it from all angles and sides... also video on YouTube...
Faceunlock much worth than OnePlus.

S22 Ultra lets scan only 4 fingers. So 2 times right and left thumb.
I suggest doing 1 finger on all 4...it worked for me on the previous phones
I used both thumbs for setting up one fingerprint. Did this for all four fingerprint options, so each process has both thumbs registered and it went on for four times. Did this fun and not necessarily to make sure to recognise better.
Both thumbs work as intended. Doesn't work when wet or with pruney fingers.
I don't use face recognition because of no security and "ideal condition" requirement. It's neither IRIS scanning nor super secure face id.

S22u fingerprints recognized 80% of the time. I have set up one thumb and one index finger. I wish the fingerprint reader was on the power button like the z Fold 3 which worked about 98% of the time.
I do not use face unlock.
The FPR for me works about 99% of the time. If a finger was wet that's typically the only time it doesn't work. I use face unlock secondary. Also works great.
I came from a pixel 6 pro, where the FPR was total garbage. It's nice having a phone you can actually unlock with a fingerprint lol.

Wow, 99% success with FPR - that seems a little high. Try turning off face unlock and see what percent success you get with just FPR. Not sure if it goes immediately to face unlock on the 1st failed attempt with the FPR. If it does, face unlock is very fast and may be masking the failed FPR attempts.

I'm getting about 99% with the fingerprint reader and I am not using face recognition.
At least 90%-95% success rate with FPR.
I'm not using face unlock

I did both thumbs and both forefingers using one fingerprint entry. I saw it on youtube and couldn't believe it. I'm not talking about adding one fingerprint completely and then hitting add. Example, start with your thumb and just register part of it, then use a forefinger, another thumb, another forefinger, keep alternating until it hits 100%. Works perfectly.

Same experience. Works very fast but probability of unlock is 90% or so. And this is supposedly a good result for the scanner which is behind the screen. My previous phone was OnePlus 3T with a fingerprint scanner inside a button - unlock speed was the same (instant) but unlock probability was something like 99.99%. This is called progress...
I use both thumbs for unlocking which works around 90% of the time.
With face unlocking I have normal and alternative appearance set so this typically works before I can even use my fingerprints.
Inconsistent at best. Still better than the fingerprint on my Pixel 6 Pro. But face recognition belongs to the iPhone.

I have a new S22 and my experience is so frustrating. I am coming back to samsung after few generations from huawei (mate 20 pro and P30 Pro). What I can't digest is the fingerprint and face id works so flawlessly on the Huawei which is relatively newcomer than Samsung and they have done it so perfectly. (on Mate 20 Pro it used 3D scan and on P30 Pro 2D scan). Samsung with all its generations with the many decades of experience still struggles.
Fingerprint is too slow and sometimes after a few tries. Face ID takes a while to open the screen. And what more - when i enable fingerprint - for some reason the face ID just becomes lazy, I don't see it even attempting to detect the face (from the rim light effect on front camera). It looks as though the fingerprint has superceded the face id. I am getting more and more frustrated by this. I did try scanning both fingerprint and face id several times. But no luck. I even suspected probably there is a way to prioritize the usage of biometrics and looked for it but there is none.
In contrast on my Huawei - it just takes fraction of a second to unlock as though it is not scanning the id (both face and fingerprint) but actually it does the job so quickly. What is happening here - is this how samsung had been all these years? I can't believe if they say they've improved from previous generations. Why is the face id so slow and most times (well lit environment as well - the face id is not at work at all (no rim light around front camera, as though the id is not at work)
Is this the same experience others have and is normal for Samsung? Do you all think it is a one off case and a reset might fix it?
I find it almost as smooth as IPhone 13. Both fingerprint and face recognition work well together, probably @ 98% unlock efficiency. with official samsung screen protector
