Question What is your experience with fingerprint and face unlock? - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Hi,
I'm coming from Note9. Fingerprint scanner was on the back. It also had iris scanner.
So dry or wet finger, day or night - I was able to unlock my Note9 from the first try with 100% probability.
Can't say about S2 Ultra.
Faceunlock - works only in ideal conditions (face in front of the camera, well lit etc.).
Fingerprint - most of the time I unlock it from 1-3 tries. And yes.. I rescanned my fingers many times. Same result.
What is your experience?

Coming from a Note 10+ the fingerprint reader works great; it is much more responsive than the Note 10+. I don't use face unlock (I haven't used it since the Galaxy Nexus), so I can't talk to that. I'm not comfortable using face unlock. It is still less secure than fingerprint or a PIN. I don't care what Apple or Samsung says.
I did like the iris scanner on my Note 8. Though, I am not sure how secure it was.

I have no issues with fingerprint....works mostly first time....sometimes when finger is wet I need a 2nd try....Face unlock works okay most of the time....lighting conditions do play a roll....especially bad if the room is dark and a light shine from behind....overall much better then my previous samsung phones

Good for you. What previous Samsung phone did you have?
It's really worse than Note9. But Note9 had different tech (iris scanner and not ordinary front facing camera, hardware finger print scanner and not under the screen scanner).

I had the s5,s6+,s9,s10 and s21 ultra...on my previous phones I made sure to scan one finger into multiple fingers, so it had 5 copies of my finger... that helped mostly with it reading my finger print the first time.. saw a video on it on YouTube. With the s22 ultra I only have one fingerprint registered and works great...i did make sure i scan it from all angles and sides... also video on YouTube...

Faceunlock much worth than OnePlus.

S22 Ultra lets scan only 4 fingers. So 2 times right and left thumb.

I suggest doing 1 finger on all 4...it worked for me on the previous phones

I used both thumbs for setting up one fingerprint. Did this for all four fingerprint options, so each process has both thumbs registered and it went on for four times. Did this fun and not necessarily to make sure to recognise better.
Both thumbs work as intended. Doesn't work when wet or with pruney fingers.
I don't use face recognition because of no security and "ideal condition" requirement. It's neither IRIS scanning nor super secure face id.

S22u fingerprints recognized 80% of the time. I have set up one thumb and one index finger. I wish the fingerprint reader was on the power button like the z Fold 3 which worked about 98% of the time.
I do not use face unlock.

The FPR for me works about 99% of the time. If a finger was wet that's typically the only time it doesn't work. I use face unlock secondary. Also works great.
I came from a pixel 6 pro, where the FPR was total garbage. It's nice having a phone you can actually unlock with a fingerprint lol.

Wow, 99% success with FPR - that seems a little high. Try turning off face unlock and see what percent success you get with just FPR. Not sure if it goes immediately to face unlock on the 1st failed attempt with the FPR. If it does, face unlock is very fast and may be masking the failed FPR attempts.

I'm getting about 99% with the fingerprint reader and I am not using face recognition.

At least 90%-95% success rate with FPR.

I did both thumbs and both forefingers using one fingerprint entry. I saw it on youtube and couldn't believe it. I'm not talking about adding one fingerprint completely and then hitting add. Example, start with your thumb and just register part of it, then use a forefinger, another thumb, another forefinger, keep alternating until it hits 100%. Works perfectly.

Same experience. Works very fast but probability of unlock is 90% or so. And this is supposedly a good result for the scanner which is behind the screen. My previous phone was OnePlus 3T with a fingerprint scanner inside a button - unlock speed was the same (instant) but unlock probability was something like 99.99%. This is called progress...

I use both thumbs for unlocking which works around 90% of the time.
With face unlocking I have normal and alternative appearance set so this typically works before I can even use my fingerprints.

Inconsistent at best. Still better than the fingerprint on my Pixel 6 Pro. But face recognition belongs to the iPhone.

I have a new S22 and my experience is so frustrating. I am coming back to samsung after few generations from huawei (mate 20 pro and P30 Pro). What I can't digest is the fingerprint and face id works so flawlessly on the Huawei which is relatively newcomer than Samsung and they have done it so perfectly. (on Mate 20 Pro it used 3D scan and on P30 Pro 2D scan). Samsung with all its generations with the many decades of experience still struggles.
Fingerprint is too slow and sometimes after a few tries. Face ID takes a while to open the screen. And what more - when i enable fingerprint - for some reason the face ID just becomes lazy, I don't see it even attempting to detect the face (from the rim light effect on front camera). It looks as though the fingerprint has superceded the face id. I am getting more and more frustrated by this. I did try scanning both fingerprint and face id several times. But no luck. I even suspected probably there is a way to prioritize the usage of biometrics and looked for it but there is none.
In contrast on my Huawei - it just takes fraction of a second to unlock as though it is not scanning the id (both face and fingerprint) but actually it does the job so quickly. What is happening here - is this how samsung had been all these years? I can't believe if they say they've improved from previous generations. Why is the face id so slow and most times (well lit environment as well - the face id is not at work at all (no rim light around front camera, as though the id is not at work)
Is this the same experience others have and is normal for Samsung? Do you all think it is a one off case and a reset might fix it?

I find it almost as smooth as IPhone 13. Both fingerprint and face recognition work well together, probably @ 98% unlock efficiency. with official samsung screen protector

fingerprint scanner

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to buy Galaxy S8+, I'm just worried about the location of the fingerprint scanner.
Can anyone who has the device tell me their opinion? Is it easy to get used to it? Does it feel as natural as the front one after a while?
Thanks in advance,
David
I don't find it inconvenient but I do like center of phone better. My only complaint is it's a little slow half the time. But I wouldn't let the fingerprint steer me away from a otherwise great phone
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
Got the phone but don't use the fp scanner. I use eyeball scanner, have case on phone so no big deal on do scanner I am guided by the case. No biggie go buy your phone. S8+
Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk
I guess I'm not as paranoid as the rest are, I don't use either - just swipe to unlock the phone. Don't use any security but the finger print scanner is easy for me to use, if I wanted to use it.
I use the finger print scanner for shopping. Most of the time I'm on unlock due to location, like bluetooth on the car home wifi etc, the rest of the time I switch between eyes and finger print to unlock more to do with which up way I left the phone than preference. ?

Hello,
I had a Huawei P9, the fingerprint scanner was ideally placed for me, I have the S8 + for 15 days, at first I had difficulty placing min finger directly on the fingerprint scanner but after 2 days Use everything goes well.I also use the iris scanner that is perfect.
the fp scanner is the worse ive ever used, i dont mind the placemeny but it only works less than half the time i want to use it (probably because it is too small). the iris scanner is the best option, works all the time, even through sunglasses. Im pretty sure i could get used to it, but i prefer the iris scanner anyway
Fingerprint scanner works better than on my old S7. Only drawback is you have to pick phone up to use it. With it on front of the Z7 you could use it when phone was laying down. But with the fingerprint scanner and iris scanner both turned on, i'm happy with the S8+.

Coming from a OP5 and concern with front fingerprint sensor not there

How did you guys manage when the phone is on your desk or a flat surface to unlock quickly like it was possible with the front fingerprint sensor on the OP5?
U will get used to it
I started to use face unlocking too, I have both set up and using the one that comes handy at that time.
I tried face unlocking on S8 and it sucked, it was very slow and I barely used it. On OnePlus 6 it is almost instant, you'll love it
btw: rear mounted fp reader is much safer for one handed use when unlocking while walking
I had this reservation as well, however i got the phone anyways.
Honestly, i love the face unlock, its amazingly fast.
A tip if you want fingerprints added as well:
I noticed also adding the side of my finger as a secondary "fingerprint" improved my success rate when using it, i often find the side of my finger hitting the sensor due to my way of holding the phone.
Coming from a Nexus 6p, I'm completely used to a rear fingerprint sensor, so no issues with OP6. My wife has used Samsung phones for quite a while now and I occasionally use her devices. I found the front sensor a bit clumsy, but that's surely just because I wasn't used to holding a phone that way. I wouldn't be too concerned about the difference between front and back. We humans usually have a way of adapting!

What is the best methods you find to improve the Success Rate of Fingerprint Scanner

So yes just lets admit it, The fingerprint scanner on Vivo Nex is not perfect, but what it represent is forward thinking which will force other manufactures to follow, but we all know that Optic under glass fingerprint scanner will have to make room to the far superior ultrasonic technology.
despite this I am interesting to know what method you people are using to get higher success rate ?
The first question that comes to mind does it really help to save multiple fingerprints for the same finger ?
Even though I mostly my thumb to unlock where it is hit and miss the index finger have a lot higher success rate, and I wonder why.
Dry hands seem to be a big problem for the fingerprint scanner... I therefor tried to save a new fingerprinting when my finger are dry, I cant say it any visible improvement. It is still frustrating that my index finger seem to work a lot better on the fingerprint scanner.
Fingerprint scanner seem to work better in dark room rather then a well lit room or environment.
please posts your findings how to improve success rate especially for using the thumbs.
I think there is still hope that the fingerprint scanner will improve further in future software updates.
I also think, people will have a different success rate because of biological versions, some fingers are maybe harder to read then others for some reason. Lets hope Vivo will push out more updates for the fingerprint accuracy. This is their first device aimed for the global market so lets hope they will give this one extra care since this device will be the bridge into the global market..
I use multiple fingerprints for one finger and think it's much more reliable than one saved fingerprint.
Interesting that my index fingers are also working much better with only one saved profile instead of my right thumb
Vivo Nex S is recognizing your already saved fingerprints. Nevertheless you can simply save the same fingerprint again by moving and trying different positions from your finger. I actually saved my right thumb three times and surprised how good it works (for the first 3 days)

Thanks..I thought that had been tried in youtube videos I think I saw people say its does not help to make multiple fingerprints for the same finger... it should not be needed..it should be smarter then that..
especially since you press the finger multiple times when you setup a new fingerprint.
Well anyway I will try it..I guess it can be worse then what it is now....
Its frustrating that the index finger works so well..and not the thumbs...
I saw some review where they said that someone unlocked their smartphone with an unregistered finger...
This fingerprint sensor is really not reliable at all
And funny, i asked Vivo on facebook about this issue, Joe just told me "use a password instead" ...

To be honest I don't trust any videos about finger print scanner. If somebody wants to troll all they have to do is register the finger and state on the video that finger is unregistered and just troll the Vivo Nex owners about how unreliable the phone finger print scanner is.
I tried several times to unlock the phone with any finger that is unregistered and 100% of the time the phone doesn't unlock and send me to unlocked the phone with the pin number.
And the finger print scanner works 98% of the time with me on my registered fingers, I noticed the other 2% is because my fingers are wet or dirty from working out.

I scanned my thumbs fingerprints and it works better with the left one. Even after a rescan of the right one
I didn't succeed in making a second scan with a finger already stored
Of course I don't know why
The accuracy is fine, however there is another interesting notice-you don't actually have to wait with your finger on the screen until the phone unlocks. You can simply put the finger for a second, release it and then wait a bit more for the unlock. That's quite intersting user experience and it makes the visibility of a faster finger recognition process than it actually is

I am sorry but I do not believe in this method...
Remember when you create a fingerprint you scan your finger multiple of times even from the edges etc.
Theoretically it could only lead to even slower scanning.
Anyway success rate have improved a lot the last 2 days not sure why...
Hopefully its learning and getting better for each day. I still hope vivo will solve the speed.
one frustrating thing is the screen dont unluck directly even when the scanner have read your finger for instance I cant put off my finger before it gets unlocked and it unlock...
I hope next update will come with some improvements regarding fingerprint scanner cause I think it does not live up fully to its potential right now.
It seems that the unlocking process is actually quite fast. There is a delay because of the animation. If you turn off animations in developer's options unlocking would be faster.
Enable double tab to wake screen
Then
Double tab screen
Use fingerprint
This make it ultra fast anf accurate

Always find my right hand not working fine with fingerprint??
Make sure the position you scan your finger is in the same position you unlock ur phone, I found this to work 8-9 times out of 10
what I have learned lately is, its good to not push too hard on the screen push very gentlely it seem to be easier to unlock. anyway I think this scanner still need software updates to improve it have problems in well lit scenarios, luckily I am a night bird..

Yes I can confirm push the on screen scanner gently always works brilliantly,in few scenarios I pushed it harder didn’t response some time with first attempt.
Overall experience 2.5 months I’m very pleased with accuracy, response and smoothness as long we learn his trick.
Always helpful if someone experience not so good response or accuracy to register 1 more time from beginning it’s finger and tested one day continuously until been successfully.
And repeat 1-2 times to find their best performance to his own way.

I just played with the fingerprint yesterday and I feel that it works better when we press harder I added the fingerprint in the dark, with a minimal backlight pressing the finger firmly.
I sorry for my English, I use Google Translator.

Terrible fingerpring reader

The fingerprint reader on my Note 10+ is terrible!
It often doesn't recognise 4 or 5 attempts in a row, then locking me out from further biometrical login and I have to use my PIN to get into my phone.
I was kind of expecting for this forum to be full of this problem. Is it only me then?

Update to Official Android 10 , and re-write your review after doing that ! :good:
Also look arround for threads regarding some tricks to get a "beter" fingerprint registration
I am on Android 10 already.
It already starts when registering a fingerprint. It constantly says "Press a little harder" when I'm already pressing my thumb right through the screen.
It got that bad after Samsung published the update after people found out their ****ty fingerprint sensor can be fooled by having a screen protector on.
Since then, my fingerprint sensor has been pretty much all but useless.
Your not alone its crappy they should of kept it on the back
im very dissapointed with that fingerprint sensor on my predecessor p30 pro is it shame.. slow and inaccurate, maybe This is due to plastic foil but thats Thinnest foil What ever exists
It only works well if your fingers are little moisturized. Otherwise, it failed often
Yep, I have dry skin and that makes it extremely difficult for the scanner.

Man honestly I wish they would have put the scanner in the power button like on th Huawei mate30 pro
Yes it's rubbish. Worst fingerpront scanner on any phone I've owned. The poor scanner, dropped calls and scrolling issues stop this phone from being 10/10. All very big problems too. I would have kept my Note 8 and not bought this phone had I known.
I just don't use it, lol. Actually I don't use any lock screen at all, not even swipe. I find them annoying. I hide all my stuff in Termux which the average user or theif wouldn't think to look, or even know what they are looking at, lol. I could always lock it or erase it remotely with a few clicks on Google. As long as it's turned on and connected to the internet.
Try this
Register 2 fingerprints only for the same finger with many angles as you can,its worked well for me
I've stopped using the fingerprint scanner altogether and now use facial recognitiong (quick) which works flawlessly.

SM-N9860 HK Version - any issues with Fingerprint scanner with factory protector

So we get the screen - protector pre-installed, and this is my 1st ever fingerprint ( under the skin ) phone
I cannot make it work perfectly as well
it takes for it to recognize it for registration
I even followed the tip where I make 2 fingerprints of the same thumb
I look at videos where ppl are touching it gently
I have to press hard if it works but most times, it doesnt recognize and I have to sorta try few angles beofe I do this
Is it because of screen protector?
Any help, tips please and if anyone can show me how their works coz I swear I am having issues
this is my 3rd sammy with the screen scanner...they work so so with the factory screen protector (this one has been the best out of s10 plus, note 10 plus) but they work way better if you remove it.
of course then your screen is vulnerable but that's the choice pretty much.
im using my note 9 today and much prefer the scanner on the back still lol
Finger print is a hit or miss for me and I don't have a screen protector ??*

It works very well for me. Not ideal but really well with the built-in screen protector.
There is one hack to make biometrics work faster - go to Optimise Battery Usage permissions and untick the com.samsung.android.biometrics entry. This will allow biometrics service to always work and will improve biometrics response time greatly.
It works, like on n10 before it. Not as good and fast as one on one plus 8 pro which I had before but it works. Best advice is to buy gearfit 2 pro or some from active watches and make it as a trusted device

Didn't feel a difference from this.
UK, Sim free handset, already tried the register the same finger twice and wasn't helping. Now got one finger four times but still the same issue. It fails so often that sometimes it goes over the 5 allowable attempts, or is just very slow, and also needs a harder press that my previous Notes.
It still has factory screen protector on.
Any suggestions?
And how do you find the "Optimise Battery Usage permissions and untick the com.samsung.android.biometrics"
Thanks.

Working great on S20U and N20U here
Register same fingerprint 2-3 times
Disable Battery optimisation for Biometrics
Disable Unlock Animation
Enable Increase Touch Sensitivity
Both phones unlock with FP with hardly even a touch
Mby if you work in office and have perfect hands (fingers). For people that works at a construction yard this is a no go (have s20 and n20 ultra 5g right now with me)!
