Hi, I have just bought my new S7 and setup my fingerprint on it.
I didn't have fingerprint on my old phone so I can't compare it but I find it really inaccurate..
It gives me alot of wrongs if I am not landing my finger perfectly centered and sometimes even when it is, its still wrong..
I have tried to reassign fingerprints which does improve it for that couple of minutes but later on when I grab my phone and try to unlock it I get so many wrongs..
Is it just me? or any one else find it frustrating?
Any tips to improve it?

Mine never has issues, if your hands are clean and not prone to being sweaty then I would exchange it.

Unlike naturally how we expect it to work or how the other sensors like iPhone's, Nexus 6p's etc. works, with Galaxy S7 you should be careful when registering the fingerprint because of the relatively small surface area of the sensor. To make it clear, you can cover almost the whole finger print (considering the relatively large rounded shape of the sensor) in various other devices. While in the case of S7 you should only register the fingerprint in the way your finger will naturally positioned when unlocking. In my case considering the thumb, only an edge of the thumb will only get in contact with the sensor not the the center part or the other areas of the print. So just register the print in the way you normally hold and unlock the phone not keeping in a flat area and registering. If this works there is nothing wrong with the sensor. Otherwise you gonna need to replace the unit.
PS: Correct me if I'm wrong @cadcamaro ;-P
try registering same finger 2 or 3 times, this helps a lot increasing the accuracy of the scanner.

I personally set up my thumb when my phone is in my hand already, I also make sure that I move my thumb around and read as much of it as possible.

I don't think my sensor is defected, it works after all..
I'll try the trick for registering only the tip of the thumb which indeed is what usually presses the button.. in fact I did register that part but not only that..
And about the register more than one time the same finger, does this thing actually recommended?
I mean its kinda ruin the machine learning of that thing.. it gets 2 different fingers that looks alike isn't it?
For me, using the thumb only works if I use/register the center of the thumb. The tip never works, but I can live with that. Center always works
works perfectly for me. in comparison to my S6's finger print sensor, this one is 10x better - faster to recognize and unlock and much more accurate.
All the YouTube dread over the location of the fingerprint scanner will not be a problem for most. This is a Urban Armor Gear Case (UaG) for the Galaxy S8+. It will not be a problem for me.
Everyone has different sized and shaped hands, that's where the problem lies, it not being a problem for you doesn't mean that it will work for everyone. Left handed people will also have to hold their hands in an awkward position to hit the scanner, I personally won't have any problem with it, but I know that people with smaller hands will

You do realise you are going to be putting greasy fingerprints right over the camera lense every time you try to unlock it right? It is slightly less of a problem for people holding it/unlocking it with their left hand (i hold with left and tap with right so its not quite so bad for me) but its still stupid placement. Putting it BELOW the camera instead of next to it would have made it easier to reach for smaller hands, easier to reach for people unlocking with the right hand, and greatly reduce the chances of hitting the camera lense instead.
It's just plain dumb design and that was obvious right from the first leaks showing where it was, so how the geniuses at samsung couldn't see that right from the start I have no idea. It was probably a rush decision after they failed to integrate it into the screen but its so clearly a stupid location for it that even a rush decision shouldn't have resulted in locating it there.
I may be slightly harsh, but this isn't a mid range phone, its the very top end of the top end and for the money they decided to charge for it, it should be damn near perfect.
I'm a lefty so I'm just going to run my finger along the back until I feel the sensor. Doubt I'll have many problems with wiping my camera lense. And I also rarely take pictures so I have that going for me as well.
Looks like you will be covering up at least 50% of the camera at the same time.

I'm just the opposite. If I try to do it with my left index finger, the scanner is too close. It's awkward for me to try using my left index finger. With the UAG case, I'll easily be able to keep away from the camera lense.

The LG V20 has the fingerprint scanner on the back. I don't know until I see the actual device, but I think the S8 once you get used to it, it should be fine.
I don't think it will be much of an issue either. But the S8 is just so fantastic you need to find a con somewhere
Honestly, I won't even use it. I hold my phone really low compared to most, I guess.
Can someone confirm how fast/reliable the iris scanner is? Also, does having it on make a noticeable impact on battery life?
im using an iphone 7 plus and i wipe my camera every time i use it and theres no fingerprint scanner back there hahahaha people are weird

I hear you and agree with the caveat that people with small hands need to purchase a mobile that they can handle efficiently. The S8 and S8+ are not designed for people with small hands? Its very much a question of compromise. If one desires a screen as large as the S8's then one will need larger than average hands or accept small handed users will need two handed operation. :good:
I don't mind the scanner being where it is. I owned a zenphone with the scanner on the back right underneath the camera. I had zero problems after acclimatising myself to such a layout.

I can comment on the fingerprint scanner, it is very fast - near instantaneous, the only issue is that it takes longer to hit the right spot that it does for it to open the phone. as everyone already mentioned it is in a bad/awkward spot. i tend to either hit the camera or the flash when trying to use it. eventually ill train myself to hit the right area, but its not intuitive.
Just checked the s8/s8+ out at Best Buy. The s8+ was perfect for me just doing a quick hands on with the finger print scanner. I thought it would be weird but it was easy for me to use but my hands are bigger than average.
Not looking forward to getting used to this. I have smaller than average hands and I know it will be awkward, but I'll try to survive.
I also am aggravated by the fact that it is impossible for one handed operation on a desk or table. I am work and it just takes a finger swipe with my phone on the desk, but now it will take entering a pin since the FP scanner is on the back and the my face isn't over the screen.

That is the other irritating thing about it being on the back, when I have the phone in a dock or on the desk I am going to end up picking it up to unlock it instead of just putting my finger on a front facing scanner. I know you can have the iris scanner AND the fingerprint scanner active, but with the iris scanner i would still have to pick the phone up to point it at my eyes so its pretty useless, it will need a pin like you said.
On the back is a way better place for the fingerprint scanner than on the front. On my Nexus 6P I can unlock the phone whilst picking it up single handedly. If the finger print scanner were on the front I'd have to pick it up with one hand and use the other hand to unlock it. The size of the phone, the Nexus 6P and the S8 (The plus in particular) mean that bringing your thumb to where a home button would be would be difficult/painful.

Ummm, so how do you use the phone with 1 hand if you cant reach the home or back buttons??
And you could just pick it up so your thumb CAN reach the front, seeing as you will have to use the home buttons and back buttons anyway....

When I unlock the phone it's usually got my internet browser open which is likely what I'm going to be using, so I'm not looking to use the Home/Back buttons.
Will it be possible to make side sense work using the fingerprint sensor? Since the xz3 had a curved display, it made sense to have it on-screen. But since the xperia 1 is flat, BUT does have a side fingerprint sensor, which isn't a power button, I think it will be good/useful feature. Any thoughts?
I never thought about it, but yes. I have almost got used to swiping the side now but kept missing it a lot when I first got the phone. The power button fingerprint reader is one thing I miss. Sony probably made them separate because when you wanted to check the phone it also unlocked unwantedly. I personally would rather have my phone unlock every time than have them separate.
I'm trying to find out if my device is faulty as the finger print sensor is extremely inconsistent.
Previously capacitive finger print sensors I've used have pretty much been flawless unless your finger was dirty or wet, but I'm getting far too many failures to unlock the Fold2. I'm either greeted with "No match", "Cover the entire sensor" or "Wipe the finger print sensor" messages. It's very temperamental - I can click the button to turn the screen and keep my finger in place and it will give me "No match", if I slightly raise my finger off the button and rest it back on the sensor with my finger in place it will unlock....
I have registered this finger (index on right hand) 4 times in the settings. I can test my fingers in the biometrics section of the app and it seems to register a print every time so it looks like it's an issue with how the sensor works when actually unlocking the phone.
Works fine here, but disabled it. The placement is ridiculous!

Same thing for me, works fine in apps and elsewhere but unlocking the screen is as frustrating as hell..... had the same issue with the S10e but hoped they had improved things. On research (since the S10e) I believe this only affects certain types of people like me with certain types of skin/fingerprint characteristics. Rear fingerprint scanners are no issue for me at all, it's just side mount !!
It took some getting used to but I like it now. I do wish they where up higher.
I noticed that the way I hold the phone and the placement of the sensor had me using the side of my index and thumb rather than the center of either. I put both in again while being careful to use the side rather center of my finger and it works fine now. Another thing that's a little of a push is that you can set it to always hot which helps. The push part comes in because you can trigger it enough while simply holding the phone that you'll max your attempts accidentally and have to put in your password.
Works fine for me, but as others say, the placement is awful. Holding the closed phone in your hand the way you normally would and you touch the sensor causing the 5 attempted unlocks to kick in so I often end up needing to use pattern unlock.
Works much faster than the Z Flip. But the placement is terrible.

I am not sure they could have placed it anywhere else.
An in-screen one on the front wouldn't be helpful when you are using the inner screen, and one on the back would be very awkward with the phone open, especially as the inner screen is probably used equally in both portrait and landscape. Certainly wouldn't expect one on the inner screen anyway, the technology is not up to that yet.
But compared to my Note 20 Ultra, the fingerprint reader on the Fold 2 is far more reliable and quicker in my experience.
As someone else said here, the trick is to register your thumb predominantly and scan the edges of your thumb. Note how you hold your phone and use the sensor naturally and use that part of your thumb or finger when registering your prints. And register more than one set using the same finger or thumb.

Works perfectly for me. Better than my Note 10+ did. I like a physical button much better than in-screen. That being said, my N20U fingerprint scanner also works better than the N10+. I have small hands so that might also help. I don't think the placement would be that good for my Husband's large hands though...

OG Fold user here and it's absolutely awful and inconsistent for me. Easily the worst scanner I've ever used in a phone.
My problem is locating it on the side of the phone if there was some sort of indentation or something to better locate it, I think it would work better.
I find it pretty reliable to the point that I can unlock it without trying based on how I reach for my phone in my pocket. I also find it mostly well-placed when holding it with the main screen open and using it for apps or to unlock the phone.

Coming from a Note 10+ the fingerprint reader works great; it is much more responsive than the Note 10+. I don't use face unlock (I haven't used it since the Galaxy Nexus), so I can't talk to that. I'm not comfortable using face unlock. It is still less secure than fingerprint or a PIN. I don't care what Apple or Samsung says.
I did like the iris scanner on my Note 8. Though, I am not sure how secure it was.
I have no issues with fingerprint....works mostly first time....sometimes when finger is wet I need a 2nd try....Face unlock works okay most of the time....lighting conditions do play a roll....especially bad if the room is dark and a light shine from behind....overall much better then my previous samsung phones

It's really worse than Note9. But Note9 had different tech (iris scanner and not ordinary front facing camera, hardware finger print scanner and not under the screen scanner).
I had the s5,s6+,s9,s10 and s21 ultra...on my previous phones I made sure to scan one finger into multiple fingers, so it had 5 copies of my finger... that helped mostly with it reading my finger print the first time.. saw a video on it on YouTube. With the s22 ultra I only have one fingerprint registered and works great...i did make sure i scan it from all angles and sides... also video on YouTube...
Faceunlock much worth than OnePlus.

S22 Ultra lets scan only 4 fingers. So 2 times right and left thumb.
I suggest doing 1 finger on all 4...it worked for me on the previous phones
I used both thumbs for setting up one fingerprint. Did this for all four fingerprint options, so each process has both thumbs registered and it went on for four times. Did this fun and not necessarily to make sure to recognise better.
Both thumbs work as intended. Doesn't work when wet or with pruney fingers.
I don't use face recognition because of no security and "ideal condition" requirement. It's neither IRIS scanning nor super secure face id.

S22u fingerprints recognized 80% of the time. I have set up one thumb and one index finger. I wish the fingerprint reader was on the power button like the z Fold 3 which worked about 98% of the time.
I do not use face unlock.
The FPR for me works about 99% of the time. If a finger was wet that's typically the only time it doesn't work. I use face unlock secondary. Also works great.
I came from a pixel 6 pro, where the FPR was total garbage. It's nice having a phone you can actually unlock with a fingerprint lol.

Wow, 99% success with FPR - that seems a little high. Try turning off face unlock and see what percent success you get with just FPR. Not sure if it goes immediately to face unlock on the 1st failed attempt with the FPR. If it does, face unlock is very fast and may be masking the failed FPR attempts.

I'm getting about 99% with the fingerprint reader and I am not using face recognition.
At least 90%-95% success rate with FPR.
I'm not using face unlock

I did both thumbs and both forefingers using one fingerprint entry. I saw it on youtube and couldn't believe it. I'm not talking about adding one fingerprint completely and then hitting add. Example, start with your thumb and just register part of it, then use a forefinger, another thumb, another forefinger, keep alternating until it hits 100%. Works perfectly.

Same experience. Works very fast but probability of unlock is 90% or so. And this is supposedly a good result for the scanner which is behind the screen. My previous phone was OnePlus 3T with a fingerprint scanner inside a button - unlock speed was the same (instant) but unlock probability was something like 99.99%. This is called progress...
I use both thumbs for unlocking which works around 90% of the time.
With face unlocking I have normal and alternative appearance set so this typically works before I can even use my fingerprints.
Inconsistent at best. Still better than the fingerprint on my Pixel 6 Pro. But face recognition belongs to the iPhone.

I have a new S22 and my experience is so frustrating. I am coming back to samsung after few generations from huawei (mate 20 pro and P30 Pro). What I can't digest is the fingerprint and face id works so flawlessly on the Huawei which is relatively newcomer than Samsung and they have done it so perfectly. (on Mate 20 Pro it used 3D scan and on P30 Pro 2D scan). Samsung with all its generations with the many decades of experience still struggles.
Fingerprint is too slow and sometimes after a few tries. Face ID takes a while to open the screen. And what more - when i enable fingerprint - for some reason the face ID just becomes lazy, I don't see it even attempting to detect the face (from the rim light effect on front camera). It looks as though the fingerprint has superceded the face id. I am getting more and more frustrated by this. I did try scanning both fingerprint and face id several times. But no luck. I even suspected probably there is a way to prioritize the usage of biometrics and looked for it but there is none.
In contrast on my Huawei - it just takes fraction of a second to unlock as though it is not scanning the id (both face and fingerprint) but actually it does the job so quickly. What is happening here - is this how samsung had been all these years? I can't believe if they say they've improved from previous generations. Why is the face id so slow and most times (well lit environment as well - the face id is not at work at all (no rim light around front camera, as though the id is not at work)
Is this the same experience others have and is normal for Samsung? Do you all think it is a one off case and a reset might fix it?
I find it almost as smooth as IPhone 13. Both fingerprint and face recognition work well together, probably @ 98% unlock efficiency. with official samsung screen protector
