Android for the Military

Thought this was interesting. Apparently the US Army is developing their own Android apps to help coordinate frontline efforts.

Awesomeness. Thanks
sent from my Sensation XD
Is that smart?!
Usualy that devices have GPS which can give somebody exactly location of soldier...
In android they can write custom safe o/s
Unlike iphone, android is opensource so the military can review all the code and close all security holes, great choice.

Does it really matter when we can see everything on TV now and soldiers are allowed to post to social networking sites from base camp?
nice! next thing maybe they make their own OS based on android?

Almost every device in the military utilizes gps, but it is on closed, secure networks.
Android is the big thing! I tell you.
Stuff like iOS will never have so much success. People just buy those Apple crap because they think they are cool with that...
i think if every one is smart, we won't have wars...
those resources should be better spend in production/plantation...
but heck, i'm just a ordinary person, i wouldn't have understand that very well..
cool, are they coming up with there own hardware that is battle ready and field tested?

You bought a phone with an infant OS for functionality? It can't do half the things Android and iOS can (yet), and you say it's ugly. I am really questioning your reasoning skills. By the way, it's the best looking and smoothest interface available. Please tell me you don't think the silver/lime green/blue (and completely uncustomizable) iOS theme looks good LOL

You should have read a bit more or ask here before you bought a WP7 with what you call a hideous interface, would have saved you money and us having to read thru all the .....
Quick answer.... No !
Guys, 2 things:
Stop flaming please and try and be helpful
secondly and lastly, @OP, this is not dev related so im moving this to Q&A.
Thanks.
Ok people....let me get this straight....I picked up the phone from a friend that needed money.....he bought the phone on contract, and later needed some money....not a new phone...I gave him 100.00 dollars for it...I am a happy owner owner of an hd2...in a dual boot config...I have never had a windows phone before so I know nothing about the OS....themes....modding.....nothing at all....which is why I came here to ask for EXPERTISE.....not flaming....Im sure there are things on your phones that you dont like either.Mine on the other hand is the looks of the Operating system...after seeing all the different roms and themes for android that are available...I was simply curious to see if there was anything like that for htc hd7 YET...I personally think that Microsoft designed an extremely ugly interface for such a nice phone..I hate the looks of it...big ugly squares of color that take up the whole screen ....looks like a 3rd grader designed it...IMO.So please dont flame me about the phone.I know anyone of you would have happily paid 100.00 for the Brand new phone as well...So on that note...thanks to the people that actually gave me useful information. Now I have the answer to my question.I understand the phone is very new and it will take time to get things modded, themed etc...so I will wait....Or maybe someone here is interested in a trade for an android device that is similar in value?...Who knows....
To the Flamers that have nothing better to do but bash someone for something they have no idea about....GET A LIFE!!!...and remember this next time you ask anyone about something you are unsure of...and hopefully you wont get flamed simply because you ASKED.....peace out...Larry

lol way to go in hijacking someones thread
Seriously though, there is a free app on the market place called SecureIt, in which you can place photos stored in the normal folders and place in there, password protected.
It cant store anything else in there, but it is a good place to hide the girly pics from the misses (so im told )
If you wanted to keep anything else in there such as documents, i guess you could save them in jpeg format instead of pdf for example, that could work
CHow.
Hey larry,
Good you found your answer and that your enjoying your HD2 (it is an awesome device IMHO).
WP7 is in its early state and as such MS will continue to develop it further, i mean look at Apple; they certainly didnt get it right first time, nor did they with android hence all the updates which improve not only the UI but speed, security etc.
WP7 does indeed have exciting times ahead, you only have to look at Mango to realise how well integrated social networking will be in the very core of the OS.
Personally i think wp7 is good, a refreshing attempt at something different, which has great scope for further development in both the OS itself and on the market place, but everyone has their own opinion and certain OS's are not for everyone.
Feel free to PM me, or discuss this further here
Cheers,
Tim.

DEV: WebOS on iPhone :)

I am starting a new project to port webOS over to the iPhone 3G 3GS and 4.
I have a website where i will be posting updates with project info. Also I am looking for someone with Linux experience as i have only a Windows 7 PC.
I need about 3 more people to help me with this.
Any takers?
Please PM if you think you can help thank you.

Any three people? Or do you have specific skill-sets that are required? What skill-sets do you bring to the project?

So you have a website, a blog, a webOS phone and an iPhone. That's a pretty unique skillset. I wonder why no-one with that set of things tried to port webOS to the iPhone before? Once you've got that skillset the rest must be pretty straight-forward, no?
BTW, you can get links to download the webOS firmware from HP's official servers here: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Webos_Doctor_Versions
Note that redistributing it (or any modifications of it) is illegal, so you may want to figure out that small issue first in your project plan ...
Good luck with your endeavour.

Are you being sarcastic, Rod? I suppose he deserves it by the know-how he puts forward. So if I get it right, he just has a website and wants others to develop and get the reward. Pretty nice business plan!
He also has a dream...the same one I have but I have an EVO 3d... Which I think should be easier...
Rod I was thinking can't it be done part way like webpage 2.1 on pre- using meta scripts?

Thanks very much for your offer.
Unfortunately, none of our developers use a Pre- these days for anything other than webOS 1.4.5 legacy testing.
I'm personally using a 1.4GHz 16GB HP Pre 3.
-- Rod
I dont get the point of it. Iphones are expensive and run unique hardware only made by apple. With that expense comes the seamless apple experience ,decent reliability and the proprietary is operating system. If your going to throw all that away, why even pay for the iphone to begin with. Their hardware is really no better than the stuff from htc. Htc hardware on the other hand is well understood and in fact,is very similar to the hardware in the touchpad.
Personally,I dont see the point of webOS on anything now. It honestly has few game changing features. What it does have is a unique UI that many people like. Rather than port webOS to other platforms, why not make a UI for android that takes the best things from webOS and throws out the bad ones, and fixes what needs to be fixed. Then you have something
really great, with a great UI,the ability to run android aps,but without many of the drawbacks of android.
As for your project,I doubt you will get any takers. What I suggest is you simply learn to do the work yourself. Start by downloading a Linux distro and installed it on an old pc.

I want to know your opinion XDA

Hi everyone, my name is Powky and I'm new here on the XDA forums.
Well... I was thinking and want to know your opinion about the idea.
My idea is: create a ROM based on iOS7. Yes, I know, many people think about that (and is possible to be some ROM iOS based but I don't know it), but I have to tell something, I wish to do a ROM based on the look of iOS7 in ALL the aspects, ALL!
The animations, the icons, the style, etc.. Just all.
I am... New? Well, I'm new on the forums but I have all the basic stuff to know about Android and some medium ones.
And I need a little favor, if you guys can please tell me all the basic stuff about create a ROM, thinks to study first, and all about developing ROM...
Wish to you guys agree with this idea to make this imagination to reality.
Good night to everybody ?

OP. Don't even think about it. Apples lawyers will eat you. That would be patent/copyright infringement. I mean if they can patent rounded corners they can do anything.

Here are some IOS 7 launchers to start with https://play.google.com/store/search?q=ios 7 launcher&hl=nl. Look on Google for everything about how to build android roms. Plenty info available.
I can understand that people like iOS UI but what is the aim of building a complete 'iOS ROM'?
As suggested you should first try xposed modules, launchers, icon packs, custom themes...

He didn't seem rude to me. He asked a question and then suggested an alternative. And it was a legitimate question. The OP stated he wanted to create a ROM the same as IOS7 in ALL aspects (his emphasis). It really does beg the question why not just get an iPhone in the first place. I'm not trying to be an ass, I just don't get it.

I understand your point of view toward their reactions, but if it was the first time that someone gives that type of answers to a new-comming OP, it would be more acceptable. However, whenever someone comes with the idea of porting or creating a OEM Rom to the affordable and very open source Nexus 5, there you will find a anti-development crew suggesting to buy a much more expensive device as a solution. Why not tell them the reasons of why it's difficult to port a Rom or where to look for help, instead of telling to spend their school money?
I could be wrong, but I ts not so welcoming for them.

That's true. I guess if Apple made a thinner, lighter phone with a larger screen fewer people would be looking for a ported IOS rom.
Well, it's OK...
Another point I want to take is the fact of the iOS launchers... There are all buggy, I want to make the ROM completely like iOS7 and I don't want to buy a iPhone (as my "friend" mrv said) because one thing: why I should to buy an iPhone of 700$ to have the ui when I have another phone with the price of 400-500$ and better than the iPhone?
That's my point of view, and you're all right, there is MIUI but I was using the launcher and is not completely like I want it...
So... I only want opinions, I will try to do it, I don't care if there are apple-haters... I don't really like the iPhone because there are to small, to close and all that ****, the only thing I like (and not only me) is the ui, and I want to ported for my beautiful android.

Next path of Android

We all know Android has come a long way, from suckie to the coolest mobile system. I wonder what is the next step of Android? Upgrade better hardware? add more features? or try to be innovative and create totally new Android experience? What do you guys think?

next time you want to discuss something, put it in the general section not Q&A . android was not " suckie" at the start, it was amazing for what we had back then. Heck of a lot better than the original iphone.
Note taken. But the suckie thing is just my opinion, no offence intended.
