I bought an Amazon Fire HD 8 and a HD 8 Plus (12 gen. 2022) during the Black Friday sales. Both were running the original firmware, OS 8.3.1.1 out of the box. When the HD 8 (2020) was updated to OS 7.3.2.2, Amazon blocked the ability to stop system apps from being disabled. This is not the case with OS 8.3.1.1 on the 2022 model. If you enable developer options and USB debugging, then open an ADB shell on an attached PC and run the following command
Code:
pm disable-user --user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota
this disables OTA firmware updates. This also works for other system apps (e.g. com.amazon.kindle.kso) so you can disable the lockscreen ads.
I presume they blocked this in later versions (8.3.1.2 and 8.3.1.3): it would be interesting to know if this is the case?
Also, blocking OTA updates prevents Amazon stock apps from being updated. If someone could send me a link to the latest versions of Amazon system webview, Amazon Shopping and Amazon Appstore apps for the 12th gen. HD 8 I would be grateful.
HOLY CRAP - such news about the latest Amazon tab allowing privileged access to system apps only got 152 views in a week?! similar news a few years back would have generate a few pages of replies!!
put it in another way - for $55, u get a hexa-core tab w/ 2GB RAM and 8" HD display AND Amazon is allowing u to disable its annoying system apps OUT-OF-BOX!
Amazon has had launch-day bugs before like the Fire HD 10 2019 was launched w/o blocking mtk-su hack even though Amazon had the patch months ago. That gave temporary root access to tabs at launch. This one seems to be even worse (or better ) because u get access out-of-box.
What is the big deal u ask? the privileged access let u disable all annoying Amazon apps like lock-screen ads, silk browser n fire launcher. u can disable them n replace w/ chrome brower n nova launcher.
Checking on Amazon firmware update page here - current firmware for Fire HD 8 2022 has been updated to 8.3.1.2. according to internet archive, 8.3.1.1 for Fire HD 8 2022 was never released on that page. so buying the tab now and disabling the update app is the only way to keep 8.3.1.1.
if anyone else has bought the tab, please check the firmware ver. would be VERY interesting to see if this access has been removed in 8.3.1.2. this is enticing enough that i may consider buying one to play.
@MontysEvilTwin - the webview n appstore for FireOS are different from the Android versions on Play store so i think u have to extract the individual apk files from the update package.
edit: look around on the web - no one has mentioned access to sys apps. but the newest firmware is 8.3.1.3 n u may need it if u wanna sideload Play store.
@MontysEvilTwin -- Thank you for the tip! Worked great!
@newnewcomputer -- Just purchased a Fire HD 8 2022, arrived yesterday. I skipped the setup process. It's still sitting at v8.3.1.1 with a build date of July 14th, 2022.
Update: Just tried running fire toolbox v30.1 and it seems like it worked! The only remaining Amazon junk is the 'Amazon Alexa' app, 'Amazon Kids' app, and the 'Silk Browser' but everything else is gone. Running Nova launcher and the play store is installed.

I have had problems with Play store. It installs OK and most things seem fine at first (I found that Calendar crashes when you set it up and that Chrome will not sync) but after a while some apps start crashing, e.g. Opera and Edge browsers. The problem seems to be with Google Play Services. If anyone could let me know how they achieved a stable Play store installation I would be grateful.
The play store was acting strange at first, but then it let me sign in and download an app. Can't share much for the experience though because the app in question (Fully Kiosk) gave a warning about not using the play store and to sideload an APK instead. So I removed the play store in the biggest irony and didn't have it going for very long.

I had problems adding an initial account so couldnt download anything. In the end I gave the play store all the permissions it asked for (it originally had no permissions) and since then it has worked fine. I can add multiple accounts, and all apps seem to be stable. Once I have the tab setup, I will likely revoke these permissions, but it will only be used as a media device, so nothing sensitive on it.

Thank you for the reports @jmtyra and @yetiuk ! I opted for a Fire HD 10 2021 and it will arrive on Monday. Will disable wifi n see which rev. hopefully it is at 8.3.1.1
really curious to see if the ADB access to disabling system apps remains in 8.3.1.2 and 8.3.1.3
@MontysEvilTwin everything else to fix Play first but as a last resort, seems like a lot of ppl updated to 8.3.1.3 and that fixes the issues w/ Google Play. good luck!

Unfortunately it is only the 12th generation, 2022 tablets, the Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 that come with OS 8 installed, the Fire HD 10 will come with OS 7. After OS 7.3.2.1 Amazon stopped system apps being from being disabled with a simple ADB command.
I am not keen to update from OS 8.3.1.1 to 8.3.1.3 until I know if Amazon have blocked system apps from being disabled with this update.

thanx, @MontysEvilTwin - u are right of course. dont know what i was thinking as it was right on the Amazon firmware page stating which tab gets what version
my fire HD 10 2021 arrived w/ OS 7.3.2.4 n was locked down tight; no elevated access thro' ADB and mtk-su patched. i loaded up on the 2019 tabs w/ 7.3.1.0 so will probably return this one. perhaps Amazon will put the HD8 2022 on sale over the holidays!
Great news! I've recently got a 12th gen Fire HD 8 and updated to the latest firmware (8.3.1.3). I am able to confirm that disabling apps using an adb command still works just fine, I was able to disable com.amazon.kindle.kso and prime music and they haven't been reenabled by a reboot, at least so far.

Thank YOU, @maximus9793 !!
I read somewhere that 8.3.1.3 is the firmware with fixes to allow Google Play Store to run smoothly. So ADB still has access to disable system apps after the update, then that is great news indeed!
It is a personal choice - keep getting firmware update or disable update so as to keep ADB access. But if you want to disable Amazon auto firmware update, run the following commands:
pm disable-user --user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota
pm disable-user --user 0 com.amazon.kindle.otter.oobe.forced.ota

To disable OTA updates the only command you need is:
Code:
pm disable-user --user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota
after connecting your Fire tablet to a PC and opening an ADB shell. To re-enable OTA updates the command is:
Code:
pm enable com.amazon.device.software.ota
OTA updates will then work again without even a reboot.

The HD 8 (2022) tablets I bought during the black Friday offers came with OS 8.3.1.1. At the moment, if you let the tablets update, they install version 8.3.1.3 (a later version of 8.3.1.3 than you can download from the Amazon Fire software update site (software build date 21st November 2022). This version, as discussed in this thread, works with Google Play and still allows system apps to be disabled. I presume that at some point Amazon will push an update that stops system apps being disabled.

Yes. That is why I asked LozzaScoobs which version was running for him. If he's still on 8.3.1.1 then the problem sound be easily solved by going to 8.3.1.3!
Hi, can anyone tell which features of Fire Toolbox v30.2 doesn't work on Amazon Fire HD 8 2022 (12th Gen)?
On the Amazon software download site, OS 8.3.1.4 is now available for download. Presumably if you have not disabled 'com.amazon.device.software.ota' this update is being pushed to HD 8, 12th. generation tablets now. If your tablet has updated to this version, please could you post to let me know if anything significant has changed, and if you can still disable system apps. over ADB. Thanks.
That would be nice to know. Can somebody proof if disabling system apps is still possible?

Bloat Freezer was removed from the market again by Google last
Thursday Sep 22. This was exactly one week since it was removed the
first time Sep 15th. We have sent the appropriate department at Google
an email simply asking WHY it was removed twice a day now, since Sep
15th. WE HAVE RECEIVED NO RESPONSE.
In the next few days, Bloat Freezer will be back on the market, with a
new Icon and description, but the app will stay mostly the same.
Everyone will have to purchase the new version again to use it, there
is nothing we can do about this, we will of course refund your old
version (again) after you purchase the new version and email us the
order numbers.
Follow us on Twitter for updates @BloatFreezer.
We will not be able to respond to any emails until the new Bloat

Way to go Google, behaving just like Apple!!!
Cant we just like.. Get the .apk from elsewhere?
I tried installing on another phone from a copy (ver. 1.86) I have on my DroidX (paid for btw) - it will install BUT when you run it the app tries to update itself and gives you only 2 options, UPDATE which jumps to the market and says app removed or QUIT which closes the app. So even if you manage to get it installed you will not be able to use it. I would love to know how this market update crap is keeping the app from running whether you choose update or not.

The first time you run Bloat Freezer it checks with the Market to make sure that you paid for it. Since it has been removed from the Market the app cannot check the payment status. It then gives the update error. It doesn't really need an update it is just throwing up an inaccurate error message. If this issue with Google is not resolved those of us who have paid for the app and need to reinstall it can never use it again.
wth doesn't he just put it on the amazon app store if google is being difficult?

wth doesn't he just put it on the amazon app store if google is being difficult?
I want to know what is going on with this app. I have paid for it on two different google accounts (mine and my wife) and I had my brother buy it also. Now he has reset his device and can no longer install and use what he paid for. That is not right. The developer has been silent for over three weeks (he twitted once) and doesn't return emails sent to him. There is no mention of this on his website and he still has a non working link to buy it from the market. People who paid for the app deserve to know what is going on. What happens to my frozen apps if for some reason the app stops working and I cannot get it working after reinstalling it due to it checking the market for a license the first time it is run?

I would actually really like to see this work as well. There is nothing quite like using the actual Kindle app that came with it rather than the Play Store one...I don't care so much for carousel, though it would be cool to switch between. But I find that when I'm on the stock rom I miss the functionality of ICS apps and the tablet version of such (Mint..dpi change doesnt work either) and vice versa with the Kindle functionality. As a student I get a discount of Amazon Prime and so use that as well as renting kindle books from my library. I don't want to lose what I pay for...but I also want ICS apps...so having my cake and eating too.

I don't know where on XDA I read the thread but a really long one exists about how Amazon did a bunch of security checking and it nobody has the desire to try breaking it all and making all the Amazon Apps work. It may be impossible I don't know. But, you can resolve the issue by doing a bit of work on your end.
a1. whatever you have now use your recovery tool of choice to make a backup.
1. Install FFF dual boot as your boot loader. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1615093
1a. read about how to use FFF dual boot. Specifically I kept getting hung up trying to make the menu choice because I didn't' have patience and I didn't read: Note that there is a slight delay before the power button will accept input, but you can tell when it's ready when the LED fades from bright green to darker green.
2. follow the process at the link above to setup the secondary boot.
3. install MoDoCo Gr9.1 alt on the secondary boot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439916
4. boot into MoDoCo and setup your Google App store. Download RootKeeper, save root, remove root. reboot.
5. setup Amazon account and stream away with your videos.
now you can do everything - except amazon - in full CM9 goodness on your primary boot. When you want to watch amazon prime you boot into your secondary boot (MoDoCo) and have good Amazon love.

I used the steps in the link and the launcher worked for me in ICS, I am about to try it in Jelly Bean tonight. I used steps 1-5 only, as step six is for the nook, and the rest is for the silk browser which is not needed. I'll post pictures later if it works on jelly bean 4.1.1. Just remember than you will have to turn off root access to watch amazon video.

I installed all the files in the kINDLE FIRE FILES folder, they all installed except for these three:
com.android.htmlviewer-10-2.3.4.apk
com.android.magicsmoke-10-2.3.4.apk
com.android.musicvis-10-2.3.4.apk
I then used root explorer to get to /system/app/
I then found, clicked on and installed:
HTMLViewer.apk
MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk
It is working for me. Will post pics soon.
The force closes I think were from the three files not going in right if you did not do the root explorer steps, but I never had force closes though.
Ok, here is the amazon kindle fire launcher running on android 4.1.1. Sorry for the picture quality, my screen capture app apparently takes blank pictures in the new android rom.

This is fantastic. I had put off playing around with other roms because I love the launcher. Well, with jellybean, I decided to take the plunge, and then I saw this thread and now I can have the best of both worlds.
My icons don't seem as crisp as they did on stock rom, maybe if I buy them from the store. The other thing is I am getting force close on video and the browser.
Also, the books section, the store doesn't seem to work, it wants to open a browser.

Hi all
I have a Kindle Fire HD 10" bought on Black Friday special last month. I had no problems side-loaded and getting the GooglePlay Store up and running. I have installed apps from both GooglePlay and the Amazon App Store.
Over the last twenty four hours, several games and apps required updates in the GooglePlay Store. I applied them. I went to run them and I get an error message about SD Card Not Available. I have the 64GB Fire HD 10 and don't even have an SD Card installed. I have an option to select OK which just takes me out of starting the app or Download Again which when selected takes me to the Amazon Appstore and NOT the GooglePlay Store.
So I have tried a few things to troubleshoot. I uninstall the app in question. But it doesn't remove the icon. It is darkened but not removed. I then reinstall and it remains in that state and gives the SD Card error again. If I go to the GooglePlay Store and select Open on the app in question, it opens without an issue.
Several of the games use GooglePlay Games so I thought maybe that is an issue. I opened that app and it tells me there is an issue with GooglePlay Services. Is there an update for GooglePlay Services for the Fire HD 10 I am unaware of?
All the other apps work fine. It is just those that required an update in the last 24 hours. I don't have auto-update enabled and won't update any other apps if they appear until I get this worked out.
Is anyone else having this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this issue? Thanks.
TJ

https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/help/google-play-store-apps-disappeared-t3721523
It provides the solution for the strange app behavior and SD Card Install error, however, I am still getting an error message with GooglePlay Games and the GooglePlay Services.
Does anyone have any possible solutions for that? Thanks.
Did you get any update in last 24h? I heard that Amazon and Google are not in good relationship anymore, so could be that Amazon already started blocking Google apps/services.

The last update I got was 12/03/17. The last I read was that Google was back in talks with Amazon to fix the YouTube issue and Amazon Video is now available on the Play Store. So I don't know what is up.
Getting the same problem here. I tried uninstalling, but the icons remain on the home screen. Upon further testing, I have figured out the problem has something to do with the Amazon launcher. If you install and open up another launcher (I used Nova) then all of your apps will be there and open just fine. Hopefully somebody finds a solution soon.

Going into Manage Apps and clearing the date on the Amazon launcher (Home Page) fixed part of the problem. Then just force quit, and restart the Fire.
My problem now is a connection issue with Google Play Services and Google Games that was fine three days ago but now throwing up errors.
Same issue here. I deleted Google Play and reloaded it from the saved APK. That worked but only for a while. I loaded Nova launcher and it runs Play with no problems, even though it is dimmed out on the Fire home page. Very strange. My guess is that Amazon is implementing Google countermeasures. There must be a lot of new Fire HD users bypassing the completely inadequate Amazon app store.

Forgot to mention that newly installed apps do not appear on the Amazon home page either. Bummer. I actually like the native home screens.
I saw a new release, Fire OS 5.6.1.0. I didn't update yet. I wonder what this has in store for us, except a more hardened and hard-to-root firmware!
Someone who updated check out the changes and tell us here!
Be careful with this Update, probably has something to do with certified Google devices, the rule says: every device with a firmware build from march 18 and forward should be certified to be able to use Google apps.
So probably this Update wont be able to use Google apps.

The update isn't available on the U.S. site, but it's up on the Japanese page for the 2017 HD 10. For other Fire tablets, go to the U.S. update page and change the domain name in the URL from .com to .co.jp.
Update: 5.6.1.0 continues to be rootable from scratch (i.e., after an adb sideload). The bootloader files have different hashes, though.
Note: There's no need to adb sideload an update to test whether it's rootable. Just inject su:
-- Extract system.new.dat from the update .bin
-- Convert system.new.dat to system.img using one of the MTK tools
-- Mount system.img in Ubuntu and inject the su binary and other su files
-- Flash the rooted system.img and the 5.6.1.0 boot.img (from the update .bin) in FlashFire
As others have reported, 5.6.1.0 has a build date of 03/22/2018. W.r.t. certification, I read somewhere that devices with already signed-in Google users might be grandfathered? In any case, the lack of clarity regarding certification is one more reason to be armed with a 5.6.0.1 FlashFire backup.

Build date appears to be 22nd March, so likely no Google Play Services functionality will be available from this point..
For those who don't want the update yet, make sure you use something like NoRoot Firewall to block OTA updates. Fire devices have a tendency to update at odd hours without user consent, Windows 10-style.
I'll see what happens when my mom's HD 8 updates.
Anyway, I have blocked the updates on router. If someone update an HD 8, please try Kingo Root or Offline Rooting by retyre.

Happened to me too, even after blocking ALL Amazon apps. That, I think just works for someone, and doesn't for someone. That's why I moved to blocking them in router.
Wow, this looks like a major update! After a long time they moved 50.5.X.X to 50.6.X.X. That makes me think, it is almost sure that this is not downgrade-able.
EDIT: They also moved to 5.3.6.2 from 5.3.6.1.

I blocked all Amazon apps, turned on the "start on boot" feature, and my device hasn't checked for updates since 3/26.
Anyone with the update notice any major differences? Is there any reason to update if I am satisfied with my current rooted set up?
Someone with gapps (no root) updated to this version?
Are gapps still working?
The new gapps build date control is triggered only when accessing for the first time with Google account or even with a device already set up?
Fire HD8 7th gen - got auto updated to 5.6.1.0 today in India. Dont see any difference, all Google apps are working just fine. Not rooted, obviously
Change log.. good stuff
5.6.1.0 No loss of Google functionality
Just got pushed to 5.6.1.0, Fire 8 (2017) and Alexa is now available hands-free, which is the first thing the tablet notified me of after the update. I'm not rooted and I lost absolutely no Google functionality.
I updated Fire to 5.6.1.0 from Japanese Fire user.
Hello! I am a Japanese Fire user.
I updated my Fire to 5.6.1.0.
After that, I used Google, the Google Play Store, etc., but there is no problem.
However, I think that it is better to stop updating by looking at this reply.
I used Google translation, so I think that it is wrong sentence.
As per post#3..... does this mean that the FireHD 8 is now rootable if updated to 5.6.1.0 or just the HD 10's?

Nope, I think just the HD 10s. Nobody tested though, it may work really.
Just got the 5.6.1.0 update on my Fire HD 8 this morning in the US. All my google apps are working correctly, no issues at all.
Google Play seems to work

Just updated to Fire OS 5.6.1.0, it actually auto-updated while I wasn't looking. I have google apps side-loaded, no root. Google Play seems to work, apps are updating. YouTube plays videos, and Maps, Movies & TV and Chrome work too. Haven't tried anything else yet.
Fire HD 8 btw
Hi everyone,
So although that I had made attempts to successfully install gms without any errors, I did not fully succeed in any of the guides. My firmware was 114 or 117 (don't remember now) and I tried several times with this firmware, as well as with 121 firmware (the only update I had).
So far, Google photos, Google maps, Google drive, YouTube, whatsapp, all work, however I am getting the notification "device is not play protect certified" when I open them (attached).
NEVERTHELESS, I do note foll:
- whatsapp backup successfully restored from Google drive, - Google photos sync and backup successfully between devices
- maps work (haven't actually navigated, but seems that everything is calculated properly).
-Contacts have synced with my Google contacts
-Gmail app works, but whenever I launch the app I get a banner saying "Google is having trouble with play services. Please try again", however I can see behind the banner that all new mails are there, but if i click the compose msg button, then I keep getting the error and cannot proceed.
-What I noticed though is that no any app currently installed on my p20 pro has been restored from play store on the p40 pro.
-i have NO notifications from Google apps
-Google search app works only for searching, I have no cards displayed on Google feed and it shows that I am not signed in, although all other Google apps have me properly signed in.
-Google Home does not work, since it does not allow me to sign in.
-Youtube works normally without any errors, actually I am also receiving notifications of newly uploaded videos :/
What the heck is going on? How come they partly work since my device is not certified and I am getting the notification page in all Google apps when they first launch?

IMO you should factory reset the phone and try another method for installing GMS until you find one that works for you. I tried a few and this way I was able to made it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=83303057&postcount=262
It seems it is not possible to have both notifications and play store working together, so you use Icebox to freeze Google Play after restoring your purchased in order to have notifications. Then use a replacement store like Aurora.
Good luck and don't give up ?
I have Google installed, with Google Play and notifications active (I don't know if that metod still works)

A friend had installed Google on Mate30 pro yesterday and today from here:

I've tried both of these methods and both work on my P40 Pro with firmware .131. I've now updated to August security patch .154 and all Google services are still working fine.

Thanks mate
I tried many methods so far, the one you used, one from a German guy, the other from the Portuguese guy (video in English) but all more or less resulted the same.
What I cannot understand is whether I do have play services working after all, or not, since as I said, my content syncs, although I am getting the non-certified error. Ok, and I do not have notifications from gapss.. [emoji23]
So I am really really confused.

Mine didn't work with that, or did it? I really don't know what to say. It's just weird, I have my content but I have this error and I don't have any notifications, yet everything syncs. Google photos sync automatically between my p20 pro and the p40 pro, etc

How to downgrade? Some tutorial just downloading firmware with checking firmware approve or not approve. Is it safe to install with differen region firmware? Or all firmware just the same and can be installed to all devices?

No, it is not save to install a firmware that does not suite to your device. In best case it just can't be installed, in worst case you'll brick your phone. This is at least what I think and what a heard from other user reports in this forum. Do you have difficulties to find the right firmware?

So what I can say from my side, Gmail app works for me. And Google Home allows me to sign in. Anyway I don´t use this app, so I cannot say more about it.
On the other side I had problems with syncing contacts and calendar.. but I found a solution.
Maybe the "functionality" refers to the firmware, maybe the GMS installation is just not "perfect".
Any other apps, that don´t work for you.? I can install them on my phone and try, if they are not country related, as "food delivery service" you´ve mentioned?

First of all, thanks vm for your assistance
You can try to search for "efood delivery" , but even netflix does not let me sign in, although their behavior is different; when i click sign in to netflix, i get the pop up abt the device not being certified, then takes me back to initial netflix screen. In the efood app, I click to launch the app, i get the error and then the app closes again. The weird thing is that efood is also in appGallery (huawei native store), so supposedly it should work.
To be honest, I love huawei devices for their build quality, cameras, battery performance and I have been debating with myself on whether I should buy the p40 pro (i really need google apps for so many reasons- home automation by using google home, etc), but I guess I am screwed; unless I make things work properly i will have to keep using my p20 pro.

I just installed efood delivery, at least it lets me to sign in via facebook.
Concerning Netflix. It doesn´t work on some devices. I had problems with OnePlus and also with my Huawei P40 Pro at the beginning. Now it works (after installing through Aurora Store I think). I don´t think it is GSM related. For me it works. But there are some solutions in the app-section on XDA.

The installation is far from perfect i tell you that
Let me ask you something, so if you have a successful gms installation, i take it that after that you have to freeze gsf in order to have push notifications of you have normal push notifications?I am somewhat confused on this. Do you have to freeze gsf to have push and then to unfreeze only when you want to use playstore?

No, I didn´t freeze anything. But as I remember it didn´t work from the beginning. I tried so many things and actually I don´t know why everything is working now. I should have written down all my steps . I think I also updated Google services. For syncing contacts I had to downgrade GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.
And I still didn´t recognize, if I get all the notifications that are possible. But I get them for my mails and all other messages (using signal for sms), whatsapp and I don´t miss anything.
If I understood correctly you imported your apps from your P20? Another idea, that there is a conflict with this method? I didn´t have this opportunity as I came from a non huawei device. I had to install all my apps from scratch using Aurora as well as Playstore especially for my paid apps.

Since I had nothing to lose (phone not being properly setup with gms) I restored my p20 pro backup via hisuite. All my data, even home screen, were restored, minus 76 apps which failed for no apparent reason, I just saw a msg that 76 apps did not complete restoration (I have more than 250 apps installed normally)
Now I am pairing my Samsung watch active 2 to see if this works, but as I see it, I will have to try again from scratch.

Of course I cannot know but HiSuite could be the problem, especially if you restore data from a different device. Did you just restore app data or also system data? I´m not firm with HiSuite, but also with former devices I sometimes had conflicts by using backup apps - one reason I miss root.... but I knew it before and still happy with Huawei and the given solutions here on XDA.
So yes, maybe give it a second try, but please don´t make me responsible if you brick your phone ... Good luck!

P.s: yesterday I inserted my sim cards and got a notification for 154 update, finally.. [emoji23] (although I won't be doing the update until I get this working)
FOR the time being, with my device as is, I would say that I could use it if I had Google home working (my local food app suddenly started to work), even though I am getting the error page when I open apps, since it seems that at the same time apps are working. Any solution on that?
