Themes / Apps / Mods Kinda googlified Watch 4 - Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

So i've been poking about lately with my watch 4 and after some thoughts I decided to somewhat googlify it to the best of my ability and honestly I love how it turned out

Pixel watch face works great on it and all it took was 1 sideload You can grab the apk here
Then I proceeded to nuke most Samsung stuff through ADB I removed the following
The entirety of Shealth deleted and (replaced with google fit)
Samsung pay (replaced with google pay)
Any package that had bixby in it was adb yoinked out and replaced with google assistant
I also removed
Samsung messages (replaced with google messages)
Samsung phone app (replaced with google one)
Samsung keyboard deleted and replaced with gboard which seems to work much faster actually
And generally debloated the watch a bit
Overall works fantastic the only thing that doesn't work after all this is always on display I'm guessing it doesn't want to work cuz pixel watch face is third party etc it will seem like it works but it wont update so it will appear as if time is frozen until you wake the watch up
Another thing that doesn't work (only on stock watch faces) is step counter to be more specific it only doesn't work if watch face can only use Samsung fit for its step count (like all stock faces do) if watch face can use google fit step counter (like pixel one here) then it works flawlessly
But other than it works faster looks nicer and generally I'm loving it
Hopefully soon pixel watch apks will be cracked and we can have launcher etc on our watches from pixel watch or if we're lucky we might get a full on custom rom from pixel watch who knows

Nice work, I wanted to ask if you noticed any difference with battery, if it got better/worse?

Since i nuked all samsung stuff (shealth samsung pay bixby etc) and plus since i cant use always on now due to it being weird I did notice a significant increase in battery life

I did not want the 5 but my 4 classic died. I miss the rotating bezel. I have the 5 pro LTE and the battery life is amazing. I get almost double the battery life.

Just a note, Google Fit can only track heartrate on this watch. If you go this route and nuke Samsung Health, you will lose the ability to scan your stress level, body compisiton, and blood oxygen levels.
Can confirm an extreme debloat will increase battery life significantly however, did that day two of getting the watch. Over 50 apps disabled. The program "ADBAppControl" made by a member here on XDA can make it very simple as well.

Very nice !!!! Since you said you removed all Samsung related app.... Did you also remove Samsung calendar app?? that is the only thing which is left in my watch ... it sucks that google does not have Wear OS calendar app ....and i am king of waiting for Google Calendar app for Wear OS...

calendar is actually the only thing that I left stock as I couldn't find any good replacements but otherwise all is nuked

2 bixby packages
all s health packages
samsung pay (1 cuz google wallet better 2 spay actually breaks if you nuke bixby)
samsung messages
samsung contacts
alarm
world clock
stop watch
timer
reminder(all 5 replaced by google clock)
health monitor
samsung weather
galaxy buds manager
find phone (optional)
(decent chunk of Samsung watch faces as I use google ones anyway)

This is cool-thx!
How do you connect the watch to ADB AppControl? I've got it to my phone just fine.?
EDIT-NM figured it out

Did you install google clock afterwards? Is your timer working correctly? Does it show the remaining time on AOD?

Hi,
How many extra hours of battery life did you get after removing Samsung apps? Can you please estimate?
To me, the most beneficial part of debloating would be to improve battery life. If the improvement is just marginal, I don't see much the point of uninstalling lots of Samsung apps....

Did someone have a workaround to get all health features of the watch without shealth? Any 3rd party app? Or can I just keep shealth and remove all other samsung apps?

I would love to see the answers for your questions.
Samsung Health uses a lot of battery and I wonder what could be uninstall and still allow heart rate, steps and sleep detection.... Or maybe a 3rd party app as you mentioned

Apps

Hi, im in love with this watch. But before I buy it, I need to know how its going with apps. Is there anywhere to see what apps which are available for the gear S2? Or can any of you who got it, give some kind of point of view on the amount and quality of the apps?

With the "Samsung Gear" App, you can go to the "Samsung Gear Apps" Store.
I count 152 apps in category"Top Free"
and 300 in "Top fee-based".
I'm waiting for good apps...

Yeah, but how many of them are really apps? For like 1 normal application You get like 30 watchfaces. With kinda sucks.
To answer the main quesiton - there are few apps atm. Like translator, file manager, text viewer, some 'making notes' apps, like four mini games (flappy bird, pong, cube runner and some firefly), maps + navigation using google maps, calculator,YT streamer to watch movies - that one is a little pointless, but looks cool - and that's like really all of it.
Some of them are just ported from GearS - there are working, but are not compatible with bezel and not really design for circle screen. Still You can use them, that's for sure.

Thanks for the information. So if I understand correctly.. there's now a Gear S2 application that lets you navigate using Google Maps instead of Nokia Here maps?
I haven't found Google maps please let me know where if it exists

It is using Google Maps API, yes. But not the app itself. On the watch You can see Your position on the map, even screens from street view (not really dependable) and instructions similar like with Here Navigator.
You need to open the main on the phone as well.

Yes, as I said before - the same way like in Navigator (see example below), but with yellow background and a little more info.

Question Minimum face options

Does anyone know why the watch faces are so limited for the Galaxy watch 4? It seems odd that they didn't have more developers working on these before the release. For me, looks like only a total of 30. Am I missing something?
Wear os isn't that popular in my understanding but since this watch is using it I'm willing to bet that more devs will transition working on wear os instead of tinzen watch faces
Now seeing alot of familiar faces in Facer!
You can install Facer and Watchmaker and have a LOT more than only 30 Watchfaces. Plus the possibility to create a watchface by yourself.
I imagine as time goes by there will be a lot more. There were a lot of great faces on Tizen and some of those developers are doing Wear faces now. My favorite developer for Tizen faces (Matteo Dini) has actually done quite a few.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=7920922820385858766
I have only been able to install these from Browser on PC for some reason. When you buy one it gives you choice of what to install it to. I have the Classic which is "Samsung SM-R890".
I suspect there are a lot more Wear faces out there as well but I really have not looked. I pretty much use MD faces exclusively.

Not all that glitters is gold! I have a Watch 4 Classic 46mm. I haven't tried watchmaker yet, but I have tried FACER and MR TIME. On Facer, it's pretty much all pay-as-you-go, or hourly demo versions, or you can sign up for a paid subscription. Even getting the ads out of the app requires you to pay. The completely free watch faces are very few and not even that nice, but what's worse is that the values returned by the pedometer, heart rate, temperature, etc are all wrong in the free apps I've tried. I ended up uninstalling the app.
MR TIME gave me sync problems between app and smartwatch (companion app and on smartwatch regularly installed) and it's also very similar, but slightly inferior to FACER, so I uninstalled it too.
I then tried to find other Watch Face on the Google store, but it's all strictly paid. I tried installing a few demo apps, but it wouldn't display the pedometer, heart rate and other sensors. I wrote to the developer asking why. He replied that I need to enable "complications". Thanks, I answered that, complications can only be enabled after purchasing the watch face, they are among the "PREMIUM ONLY" otions. In other words, the only thing left really to try for free is the time display
The Galaxy Store was and is great, both for structure and content, at the moment it was a huge loss for me to go from the Active 2 to the Watch 4 Classic as far as the store is concerned. We'll see what will happen in the future...
Greetings
I only use Watchmaker. Facer has to much ads and payments and abo for me.
For watchmaker I only payed (i think 5 EUR) one time. Sure you can also make abo etc. but I prefer to use my own made Watchfaces. So no more money to pay and right now my watch I got 72 % battery since today morning (6 o'clock) with activated AOD (shows time digital and analog).
The watchface shows time, date, steps, calendar, weather and battery and even has shortcuts to 2 apps.
I've made a few more (copys) of existing watches or watchfaces. That's enough for me.

Nice watch face. For your use, you may be better off with the Galaxy Watch Studio
Don't like the Studio. Tried it but it is full of bugs. Weather is missing, Complications doesn't show correctly at the watch etc.

I have tried watchmaker just now. For my use, I don't intend to create my own watch faces, at least for the moment, it's even worse than the other apps tried before: every time I go back, or touch something inside the app, a screen of ads appears and fills the entire display. There are just 10 free watch faces, but they're horrible.
All that's left to do is wait and see how the situation evolves. The transition to Wear OS it's a strong and bad hit for those who, like me, comes from Tizen and Galaxy Store.

There are a lot more than 10 free faces. Like hundreds to thousands. You can find them outside of the app at different sites and on reddit. I think you need to use the paid version of the app ($5 or $7 or something), but, before you complain, that's less than 2 cups at Starbucks or less than a lunch at McDonald's for something you'll potentially look at on and off for hours a day. And it's one time. (I see people complain about non-free apps too often. Sorry!)

So I should do as you say everywhere, 5€ here, 7€ there, another 5€ on another site and so on, with closed box, that is without knowing what I'm buying? No thanks.
And If they are of the same quality as the ones I tried...blurp, anyone would be disappointed.
Another thing to consider is battery consumption.
How beautiful was the Galaxy Store ... I was tempted to sell the watch 4 and go back to the previous model for the complete absence of a dedicated market, as instead has Tizen and I'm not the only one to think this ... But it's still early, we'll see how this new Series 4 evolves.
Greetings

Question Is it really WearOS 3 from Google??

Is it??
Or is it a hacked version of WearOS 2 to run on Exynos soc? Or maybe even Tizen hacked to look like WearoS?
Just don't get why Google aren't releasing WearOS 3 until at least. Q1 next year, not even for Fossil who they own, yet Samsung try to give the impression of Wear OS without ever saying Wear OS 3.
Show me a screen shot from a watch that says Google Wear OS 3 and then I'll believe it. Until theen it's a con.
I'm not getting it until everything is clear. Samsung is known to cut corners and keep quiet about it
More like a hacked version of tizen to run Google things
Consipracy theories everywhere.
It is running on android 11 (version used for Wear OS 3.0).
Wear OS 2.XX is running on android 9.

Both Wear OS and Tizen are based on Linux kernel.
History of Tizen goes back to mid 2007 (Moblin) so it's actully slightly older that Android.
Not convinced until I see a screen shot that clearly says Google Wear OS 3!

I am getting maximum a day only and sometime even less.
With heart rate off and hardly done any excercise.
Display itself is taking at least 7% battery per hour even if I am idle.
If I put any fancy colorful watch face, it drains toooooo fast.

It's usually an offending app or usage of LTE. Make sure to set LTE always off....and turn it on only when you need it. In my case Spotify was eating up battery life like crazy....and now I force stop Spotify when I'm done using it...

Is there any way to on/off lte in single click, from tiles maybe? Or do we need to go to setting>Connection> Lte every time?
Also in the drop down menu if you click add button "mobile data' will appear, what does it do? Even if we turn it off, cellular icon still appears. I assume it is data only on/off and not calls???
Also for 40 hours backup we need to use some dark watch face right?

Question Watch face Issue (White Text Clock)

Hi guys
Need some help. Since the last update 9 Feb. I have this weird thing with custom watchfaces. It renders correctly... But as soon as the screen goes off (sleep) the watchfaces changes to this in the picture. And stays like this?
I don't have AOD enabled or anything. I'm. It sure if it's a setting somewhere... But the stock faces is okay.
It's driving me crazy hehe. Not sure why this is happening...
I need to basically uninstall and reinstall the face but then it happens again..

They will have to fix with a patch or something... Alot of faces affected....
It think the original poster of this thread is posting a different (but possibly related) bug than what others are following up on. I believe most of this is about using AOD and sometimes the screen is not updating in ambient (low-power) mode. While this is happening to me, as well, I have not seen the white digital clock appear on my AOD display, ever.
In any case, and I am not sure it will make any difference, but I did report this to Samsung through my Samsung account by opening a "my questions" with the following (most of which from my posting on the other thread on this forum):
After the recent R890XXU1EVA8/R8900XM1EVA8 firmware update, I am experiencing major problems with the always-on display:
There are times that when in lower-power (ambient) mode, it is NOT updating any information on the screen (analog or digital). If I touch the screen, do the "wake up" wrist move, or touch a button, it immediately updates everything. It is unpredictable and intermittent. Prior to this last update, it ALWAYS updated the AOD screen in any condition. Now when I glance down at the watch, I am not sure if that is the actual time or not. And that defeats one of the main purposes of having AOD.
Worse, at other random times, it resists waking from low-power mode, even when pressing a button. I have to press several times and there is a long delay before it goes full-awake, updates the screen, and gives me control. Sometimes when it is acting like this (as if the face is "frozen"), it also doesn't automatically adjust the AOD screen brightness to environmental conditions, either.
And it is not just me. Many others are reporting this on the xda-developers forum:
Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 gets new straps, faces...
FYI, a few items for our Samsung Galaxy watch 4 ⌚: https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-galaxy-watch-4-straps-2022-3103478/
forum.xda-developers.com
And on Reddit, one user suggested this as a possible root cause:
“For watchfaces that make use of WatchFaceService.Engine, the onTimeTick() method is called once a minute to update the watch screen when in ambient mode. This allows the watch to display the correct time, even when the user hasn't interacted with the watch recently. After the latest GW4 system update, the onTimeTick() method is no longer being called while in ambient mode. This seems like a newly-introduced bug, but could just possibly be a misguided attempt to save battery.”
I would appreciate it if you would look into this, because it is absolutely ruining my experience with your product. Thanks

In any case, and I am not sure it will make any difference, but I did report this to Samsung through my Samsung account by opening a "my questions" with the following

Well, that was a waste. I got an Email saying I had to report it through "help" on the website. So I went there and did a chat and had to escalate to a "pro" who could take the information for a ticket. Now I have a ticket number. Who knows if it will get anywhere from there. But at least I tried (twice).

Thank you for going the mile for us.
Im spamming update button, but i have a sneaky suspicion, its going to stay like that. I dont tink its a bug, but rather an enhancement or something. (You know Samsung)
I think the watchmakers will need to update their watches to not use that stay awake function thing....(All my old favourite watch faces broken :'()
Hopefully im wrong......... LOL
I have this same problem still, even after latest update a few days ago, it's so frustrating that I can only really use Samsung's watchfaces at the moment! Does anyone know any sort of workaround?

Hi there...
Yes I hear your pain. Same here. I was so excited to see that 107mb update... Immediately tested those watchfaces. Still the same
I started using Watchmaker watchfaces working well. Very good repo of free faces aswell....
I still hope for a fix... Maybe the next one. So sad

Question How can I stop battery drain on "screen off"?

I'm happy with the battery performance, but only when the screen is on. When I use the phone mostly with the screen on, I get good SOT(6-9 hours), but with the screen off, the battery consumption is terrible. How can I pull this down?
Probably a cloud app; try temporarily disabling Google play Services, Google backup is a dependency as is Playstore, Gmail. Some apps also need it to run. I enable it once or twice a day. Disabled saves 1+%@hr.
Trashware social media apps like fb, WhatsApp etc shouldn't be installed. It all adds up.
6 hours SOT with a 5002 mAh battery isn't good, 9 hrs is fair to poor. That said all Samsung's should be optimized for best performance.
Thanks for your opininon. Are you saying we shouldn't use Whatsapp? Is it real solution?
Unfortunately, because of SD 8 gen 1 limitations (probably worse on Exynos variant), about 6-7 hours SOT is best you're going to get on the S22 ultra.
Try the following guide here & see if it helps your battery life.
I have the Exynos version. My phone has a SOT of about 10 to 12 hours. Rooted and bebloated. I do have the brightness very low though.
Android 13.
OneUI 5.
Latest.
Lightly debloated.
That's interesting. I guess depends on what apps the phone is using during SOT.......
Mind sharing your battery usage breakdown screenshot?

Real as it gets. All social media apps should never be installed. Many should even be logged on to. WhatsApp track record is stunningly bad.
Lots of users means its got a huge bullseye on it even if they try to secure it, it will hacked again like the sun rises in the morning... for sure. Meanwhile phishing scams run under the radar and count on you screwing up. And many do.
You got to ask yourself one question,

No really. The problem is that all the apps developed by Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp) are power hogs. Meta does not care if it chews up battery. The primary reason is that Meta is shoving ads in your face. Even when your screen is off, those apps are running in the background. Meta is not the only offender. There are plenty of other app developers that do the same thing.
Also, there are different "flavors" of Android. Each OEM implements it differently (even within the OEMs). This makes it less cost effective to customize their apps for each OEM. There is only one flavor of iOS and iPadOS, so it is much easier to tweak it for iPhones and iPads than it is for Android devices.
I understand. Thanks. I have another question. You said you turned off google play services. When I turn it off, notifications do not work and many applications do not work. How do you overcome this situation?

It doesn't effect any notifications for me that I use except Gmail. Most my apps run without it. I tend to shun those that do.
Some of the Samsung apps take the place of Google apps, no need to run both.
If killing Google play Services helps at night it's likely Google backup Transport running.
Hello, I have something to ask about. I need to know if there is any ability to store a system application variables usin adb. Imagine that I want to open my settings app and do something mabye a confirmation dialog will be shown in order to say something such as alert for something supposed that I did click on OK, i the normal case this alert will never be shown even if you clear the settings app data or clear the cash, is there any way to use adb to store the settings app data before opening it the if anything as the previous senario happened I can restore the settings app to the moment before clicking on the OK button or even before this alert has shown

Many apps that "need" Google play Services are Playstore pay apps. This can be circumvented by first allowing the app to activate, then firewall blocking their internet connection. Firewall block Playstore as well although it should be disabled except when needed.
If an app doesn't need internet access to function it should be firewall blocked anyway.
