Apps - Samsung Gear S2

Hi, im in love with this watch. But before I buy it, I need to know how its going with apps. Is there anywhere to see what apps which are available for the gear S2? Or can any of you who got it, give some kind of point of view on the amount and quality of the apps?

With the "Samsung Gear" App, you can go to the "Samsung Gear Apps" Store.
I count 152 apps in category"Top Free"
and 300 in "Top fee-based".
I'm waiting for good apps...

Yeah, but how many of them are really apps? For like 1 normal application You get like 30 watchfaces. With kinda sucks.
To answer the main quesiton - there are few apps atm. Like translator, file manager, text viewer, some 'making notes' apps, like four mini games (flappy bird, pong, cube runner and some firefly), maps + navigation using google maps, calculator,YT streamer to watch movies - that one is a little pointless, but looks cool - and that's like really all of it.
Some of them are just ported from GearS - there are working, but are not compatible with bezel and not really design for circle screen. Still You can use them, that's for sure.

Thanks for the information. So if I understand correctly.. there's now a Gear S2 application that lets you navigate using Google Maps instead of Nokia Here maps?

I haven't found Google maps please let me know where if it exists

It is using Google Maps API, yes. But not the app itself. On the watch You can see Your position on the map, even screens from street view (not really dependable) and instructions similar like with Here Navigator.
You need to open the main on the phone as well.

New Google Play Store Sucks

Does anyone else think the new Google Play Store sucks?
It's a horrible use of space. It's bad enough that recently Google made it so that if you want to buy an app, you are forced to create a Google Wallet account that is tied to your mobile carrier.
Now, Google Play store has this big waste of space, and surprise, the tab to tell you the app's permissions is missing.
Where do I find an app's permissions?

If you want t search by permissions, visit the appscrawler site (appscrawler.com). I do not have permission to enter an url. But you can Google it. There are lot of Android apps what are pointing to Play Store. One of the advantage of the site is the ability to search by permissions.

found this thread while searching for google play sucks
i too think it sucks and honestly lacks some serious functionality. all i have is a huge messy list of apps. no way to sort your apps, by either category, or even a simple search that will search your list of apps. the google play app for tablet (if it's a different build) is much worse.. lots of wasted screen space and the list of your apps is narrow and frustrating to navigate. i buy many apps and currently there is also no way to only see apps that i've bought.
maybe google doesn't feel it necessary to continue to improve and add features to it because they don't make much money off app sales? no idea, but it's pretty puzzling how long its been and again, it lacks basic functions to easy manage your apps. you should be able to manage your apps as if you were just browsing the app store. things sorted by category, title, size, date, last purchase,etc. maybe i am being unrealistic and asking for too much.. ?
I've stopped downloading new apps or updating my existing apps. Yes, to me the Google Play store sucks that bad!

Adding Own Photos to Watch Faces

Hey guys, has anyone figured out if there's a way to attach a photo or wallpaper to the S2's watch faces? This is the only thing that really bugs me. Outside of the level of watch face customization, I like it more than my Urbane (so far). Would even do a third party solution if such an app was available but so far I haven't found one.
Thanks in advance!
K-
The Digital Watchface allows you to do this.
Hmm. I just added an image to my watch gallery and there were no new background options on the digital watch face
Update: I was only using the watch to set the background. I see the more detailed face customization options in the app.

I really struggled with this until I found that you can only add a photo for the watch face using the "Digital" style. When you Stylize this group one of your choices is to add a photo from your phone.
I'm unable to use a custom image as the digital face. I keep getting a "Unknown Error. Try Again" . I'm able to send photos to the watch and view them in the gallery, so the syncing between phone and watch work.
Any ideas?
Not my video but he shows how to use own pics
Looks like that option is in the digital watch face

Pix seems ok for me, but wish there was a way to move the time around like Watch Styler so it didn't block the center of the image.

I don't know if this app is available in the US market yet, but it became available last night in Korea. It lets you do custom analog watchfaces and download ones others have made.
It needs a watch app from the gear store, a google play app on your phone, and a website is used to make the custom faces.

White Light - the simplest "flashlight" app (free)

The app turns the screen white, cranks up the brightness to 100%, and keeps it this way until the user presses the back or home button. The display of the Gear S2 can actually get pretty bright, producing enough light to see everything in a 4 x 4 meter room. Here is the source code:
Code:
<html><body style="background-color: #ffffff;">
<script>
tizen.power.request("SCREEN", "SCREEN_NORMAL"); // won't work properly without this line
tizen.power.setScreenBrightness(1);
setInterval(function(){tizen.power.request("SCREEN", "SCREEN_NORMAL");}, 10000);
window.addEventListener('tizenhwkey', function(){tizen.application.getCurrentApplication().exit();});
</script>

Off topic:
This is my most popular app by far (2,610 downloads since Mar 29, 2016). Surprisingly, only 7 people rated the app. I was wondering why I don't see the comments on the app store page, and it turned out they only show comments that were posted by users who live in the same country (I live in Canada and no one from Canada rated the app, hence no rating). That's why if you live anywhere but USA and Germany most apps in the app store will have no rating, which is stupid :silly:
install hangs
hi - I've tried to install your app on my gear s2 classic but it hangs at the 100% mark. I know some installs can take a bit of time - the longest I waited was 10 minutes though which I think should be sufficient? Can you lend any advice to what the issue might be? thanks! :fingers-crossed:
I would factory reset the watch (there is a quick reset option), because the problem is not in the app/apps. 7000 people installed the app so far and no one complained.
If you are not installing from the app store, make sure you have this line in the config.xml:
Code:
<tizen:privilege name="http://tizen.org/privilege/power"/>
Finally a flashlight app that stays on if you move your arm. (auto wake). love it, will rate you. #Belgium
Great app, thanks a lot for sharing
I have just one little issue with it: leaving the app will not reset screen brightness to the original value

Thank you! The next update (coming some time next week) will fix this issue
The update has been submitted to the app store and is awaiting approval (usually 2 days). Here is the updated code:
Code:

<script>
tizen.power.request('SCREEN', 'SCREEN_NORMAL');
originalBrightness = tizen.power.getScreenBrightness();
function terminate(){tizen.power.setScreenBrightness(originalBrightness); tizen.application.getCurrentApplication().exit();}
tizen.power.setScreenBrightness(1);
setInterval(function(){tizen.power.request('SCREEN', 'SCREEN_NORMAL');tizen.power.setScreenBrightness(1);}, 10000);
document.addEventListener('tizenhwkey', terminate);
document.addEventListener('visibilitychange', terminate);
</script>

How to find in app store
Hi
Sounds like a useful app. I search for "white light" in apps store but only find one for phones.
How can I find the app for the s3 gear?
On the watch I found an app called torch. Is that it?
Hi Eveman,
I have not released a version for smartphones, so the apps you found must have been developed by someone else.
If searching under GEAR tab in Samsung Galaxy Apps store brings no results, I can only suggest trying it again in a few days. Once I tried searching for my Always-On apps and it brought no results, tried again later - and it worked.
Please let me know if that helped.
I have the app, thanks works great. Do you know the shortcut I would use in GWD to make it a button (like com.samsung.weather is for weather)?
Hi andrewtac, thank you very much for your feedback! Try this and let me know how it works: 55V5m8QGTw.WhiteLight

I cannot find this app in the Play store for Android anywhere. Can you put a link up so I can use this flashlight app. I love this app and my new pixel 7 pro didn't copy it. I'd like to have this app on my phone because it works and that's all it needs to do. Pixel 7 pro and everything thereafter is going to be 64-bit architecture, so update it to that and please put a link here so we can get the thing.

You must be confusing it with some other app, because this app was developed only for smartwatches running Tizen OS (that is, Samsung watches released before 2021). I might develop a Wear OS version of the app some time in the future, though there is already a built-in "flashlight" app that works pretty well.

Can't find speedometer

Hey there, on Samsung's official videos, we can see a speedometer (like this : https://youtu.be/r2sXbVjrEck?t=17s) which use GPS to track the speed of the user but I can't find it on my Gear S3, I got the Altimeter/Barometer but not the Speedometer. I bought it yesterday in France, everything works fine expect for this. Does anyone have an idea of what could I do to recover this functonnality?

There is a Speedometer app in the Gear Store
.
I am interested in this too. Nothing in the galaxy app store looks like the app that is displayed in the official Samsung video. The speedometer app in the video looks like a Samsung Electronics LTD app, just like the stopwatch and the timer apps.
Same here!! Spotify, Samsung Pay and the Speedometer all still unavailable. Poor. Loving the watch though.

I think it's not cool for Samsung to show things which are not there in the definitive version of the watch Especially when people buy it for these functionnalities

Not true. There are two apps, one is called "SpeedLimit", which looks good and free, however only has Km/h option but does also offer road speed limits (where supported on Open Street Maps). The second app is called "Speedometer MPH-KM/H" Not as attractive but offers MPH and costs £1.35
No sign (yet) of the Speedometer app that appeared on Samsung's launch videos.

This is nuts. Only making apps available in certain markets doesn't make any sense. I bought the Frontier so I could run Samsung Pay and now Samsung says it isn't available in Canada even though I can have Samsung Pay on my Phone?? As you said, none of the apps in the app store look like the speedometer apps on the advertising. You watch, Spotify will come out for the US and no one else??
The Speedometer app was only just released. It's available in Australia.
EDIT: I saw it in the Galaxy Apps store yeste4rday, but it's not showing now for some reason.
Now it is mia in the United States. If I search for "Speedometer For Gear", it does not show up. If I check "my apps", it is listed there.
It's back in the USA, as of today. This time it loaded fine and is working.

Geocaching with Gear S3

Hey,
is any developer out there who's making a geocaching companion App for Gear S3?
There is an App for Android Wear (c:geo wear) but nothing for Gear S3.
I just found an old version for Samsung Gear on GitHub, but it's developer doesn't work on it anymore.
github.com/ ehcloninger/cgeo-gear
I just got the following information from it's former developer:
I started on a project for the Gear S in early 2015. It was a prototype app to test the APIs. I was contracting to Samsung at the time. The code is all in open source on GitHub. I would say the project was 75% complete, with a very big "however".
github.com/ ehcloninger/cgeo-gear
The project had 2 parts. On the Android side, there was a plugin for c:geo that listened for messages sent from c:geo, packaged the data to send to the Samsung Sync API. I had to build my own version of c:geo to generate the message. If you don't have the plugin for Android Wear, you could change the Intent to accept the same message as Android Wear. The c:geo team were not willing to add another menu item for Samsung watches.
On the Tizen side, the Javascript code accepts the Sync API call and gets the GC data on the watch. It displays the information according to the design guide of 2014/2015 for the square watch. The design style was changing with the round watch and I didn't update it to match. I was about to put the parts together to allow the wearer to navigate with the watch, but I was told in a meeting the next watch wasn't going to allow Location APIs for all developers, so I stopped working on the project.
If you are a developer, I would love someone to finish the project. Feel free to fork my repo and make it your own.

But unfortunately I'm not a developer just hoping to find some interested people...
Kind regards
Christian
I would also love to see this happen. I'm not a developer either, though.
Nobody out there?
Hopefully...
Maybe 'Quick GPS Position Pro' is something for you...

I'm sorry, but no, that's not very helpful for geocaching...
So what do you need?
I downloaded this source which seems readable, but I am new to geocaching...
So I might help
But: remember, we do*NOT have a compass on our Gear S3. So...*no possibility to show a direction

Hey there,
I know about the lack of compass.. But wouldn't it be possible to use the GPS for showing the direction? Like standing on position A and showing just where to go to reach Position B?
When this isn't possible it could be helpful to send an actual Cache to S3 and Show it on a map and your actual position aswell.
Perhaps you have a look on c:geo Android App, gathering ideas!
Thanks for your interest!

Hey, are there some News? Dumdidum?
Nothing?
I'm not a developer either, bit an company app for c:geo would be great!
This thread has more than 2.000 views, but no one will develop an App?
Or tried someone already and it isn't possible?
Of course it's possible.
I just recently got a S3. I'll take a look at it. I already have the c:geo Gear app running.
I see if I can get it to work completly an then develop it further. I just have to get familiar with the Tizen development tools and APIs.
Hey SgtSeppel! That's sounds great! Hope you Could Do it! Hope to get updated here
SgtSeppel, great news!

Solution would be to plot your vector and project your direction - that is how it used to work on the early GPSs (I still have a Garmin geko 201 without compass and it works out your direction by sampling and vectoring between the last two points to give you a heading - of course if you walk backwards or hold the GPS upside-down that confuses things when looking at the screen!)
I've used Here Wego to navigate next to cache. Works well from C:Geo just choose navigate to and select Here Wego from phone and it starts Here Wego navigation also in the watch.

Isn't Here WeGo a street/road navigator?
For geocaching (and other navigate activities) I need to enter a position (poi or even a route) and like my watch to show in what direction the next poi is.

The app Quick GPS position pro, do already have implemented bearing, it shows the direction you are moving to. Ofcourse it is not usefull when you don't move. Just walk three meters and it is accurate again.
