Hi,
I'm interesting to buy the new gear s3 frontier Bluetooth version and I have few questions:
1. I saw that gear s2 don't let you make calls on the watch (I mean you can talk to the watch like in the movies), also send messages through the watch like for example Huawei watch let you.
Is the gear s3 is capable to do that?
2. I'm using OnePlus 3 and I saw that this phone is not on the list of supported phones Samsung posted, but online people said that the gear s2 working fine with the OnePlus 3, if making calls and messages is available in the gear s3 can I do this with my OnePlus 3 ?
3. Because this is Tizen OS and there is no play store, Galaxy apps have apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, Google now etc?
Thanks a lot

Hi yes you can make calls, write and send messages straight from the watch without the need to use your phone.

Thanks, this with the OnePlus 3 too?
And about the galaxy apps?
And what is the limitations with different phone and not Galaxy?
Someone ? Please ?
Sorry I use a galaxy s6 at the moment so I'm unsure about the phone your asking about. whatsapp works through my watch which was installed using play store. I dont think it matters where the message apps are installed from as all notifications from the phone are managed through the phone in the gear app.
Is anyone able to make calls on the watch with a non-Samsung Phone?
Doesn't work on the LG V20.

Apparently, The gear S3 is compatible with any Android phone with at least Android 4.4 AND 1.5 G Ram... If your phone does not meet these specifications then the Gear App will not be available from the google play store.
I can't answer calls with my watch. I have the LTE version and using Bluetooth only. When I get a call, I try to answer it with my watch but my watch says to check my phone but nothing shows up on my phone. I can decline a calls but not answer them. Any ideas?
Edit...I'm using a Nexus 6p

My answer was to a question regarding NON-samsung phones... and I was just saying what I had read... maybe I should have said... Allegedly and not Apparently.. in my original quote.
You can always learn from others who have the device.
Make and receive call doesn't work for me (sending sms work good). Phone Xioami redmi 3 Pro, Cyagenmod 13 (Android 6.0), Samsung gear s3.
What are the problem?
It doesn't work on my Moto G4 either running Marshmallow. It just says check phone.

Mine is hit or miss. Sometimes when I click reply, it will ask me to check the phone. Sometimes I can reply. This is with almost all messaging apps that I have (whatsapp, viber, hangouts) I have a nexus 6p with MM.
However, I noticed that the reply works better if the messages are shorter. In other words, if you get a message that is short, the reply button is already visible and you can just hit it while looking at the whole message on the watch.
When you have longer messages that would require you to scroll down on the watch before seeing the "reply" button - it will ask me check the phone.
Again, all scenarios are hit or miss but the reply on watch works better with short messages. I was able to reply on watch with longer messages too but rarely.
Just my observation - Also I have seen this behavior in two different Gear S3s (different phone/accounts)
I can't speak about the Gear Classic or BT only Frontier. But the Frontier LTE is absolutely capable of making and receiving calls and texts when paired with any phone or no phone at all.
It is also possible to handle email and other notifications when connected to a non Samsung phone. But the process isn't particularly elegant.
The Tizen app library isn't extensive. But the number of tasks that can be efficiently performed on a 1 inch screen is fairly limited also. Still, if that's important to you, LG's upcoming Android Wear watch is worth consideration.
I've owned my S3 for a couple of months. It's my primary phone, I no longer carry a smartphone. It handles my calls and texts, filters email, provides time/date/weather, runs a few convenience apps (ie. calendar, timer, calculator, reminders). The watch is remotely connected to an LG smartphone (with no SIM) that never leaves the house.
Without doubt, the Gear S3 is the most capable, feature laden watch on the market. But that is subject to change on February 10th.
My S3 Bluetooth-only can process calls and text messaging fine with the Pixels.

Are you using hangouts as your default SMS app? Because for me, I can send NEW messages without an issue but when I receive one, sometimes I can reply on the watch itself but most of time (like 90%) it asks me to check my phone (again REPLY) which is super annoying.

Since I am a Google Voice user, I use Hangouts exclusively. After installing the Android Wear app, I receive and can reply to all Hangouts messages but I cannot initiate one. Furthermore, text and emoji work, but not MMS. I too wish Tizen handled Android notifications better.

Lol .. Im exactly the opposite. I can only initiate text but cant reply.
Im a project fi user.
Some question I wish to know as I'm planning to buy Gear S3 Frontier in the future.
For example, I'm using Huawei Mate 9.
1. I'm confused in people saying making call and receiving SMS don't work, and some say work, exactly which one is true? Is it that you can accept call but can't start call from the watch?
2. Any one that uses What's App, Wechat, Hangout, specially Facebook Messenger etc, are you able to do reply to these apps(like in notification area)? Like not only the quick message, to be able to type manually on watch and reply (Voice or Keyboard)?
3.In relation to question 2, how well it work with remote connection?
Thanks.
I have a Pixel and a Pixel XL. I can initiate and answer calls fine on my non-LTE S3. I can start and respond to messages as well. I haven't tried the other apps you mentioned.
I'm on a htc 10, lineage OS and I'm unable to initiate calls or send SMS with s voice
I have HTC ONE M8, answer to both of your questions is yes it's working fine, connected via Bluetooth, phone calls sms replying as well as initiate call or sms. WhatsApp and other can receive and reply but cannot initiate new message.
(Didn't tested when connected to same WiFi network.)

Ah that's good to know. As for what's app or facebook messenger. Reply is all I need. Hardly initiate message on watch.
Thanks guys. Good to know it's working well with other phone.
Two more things I wish to know.
1. If I accepted a call with watch, can I redirect it to phone directly on watch or I have to manually go to phone and choose to not use Bluetooth in that caller screen?
2. If I have a Bluetooth headset connected to my phone for example. I answer call using watch but can the call go through headset instead? What if i accepted the call using the Bluetooth headset button instead of watch. Will the audio re route properly?
Thanks

Yes I'm on stock rom (switched back to stock due to same issues)
I am using Xperia Z5 initiate calls works fine from watch by finding contact and tapping phone icon on watch, using s-voice its very hit and miss. Can initiate texts from watch by going to contact and tapping the envelope button, initiating texts with s-voice requires samsung phone ('send text message to xxxx' gives 'sms service is unavailable) can reply to texts, etc but only while notification is present, after notification cleared have to start from scratch. Its all pretty poor overall tbh.

Can't help enough as not tested in detail.
In Bluetooth settings headset gives both options for phone audio and music
But watch gives only phone audio (so music sound can't come from watch, only music control possible)
And
If I select phone and music both for Bluetooth headset, then watch disconnect by itself as it wants phone audio.

Btw. When you set the reminder, are you able to set for example. Today February 1. And I wish to remind myself to buy something on February 3. Can I do that? I hear it's strictly within the day only.
How many languages to the watch support tho? Does it support Japanese by any chance?
Does it have auto brightness?
I can say now that I went back to full stock rom, everything is working fine now. I can make and answer calls. I wished someone had told me earlier. I been calling Samsung support for days and they havent been anymore useful then the manual, telling me I needed the lte model to answer calls
On my mate 9, I can Not make a call through the watch neither reply to message text... Things I was able to do with my S6.
Probably due to emui and his special dialer.
But I can read SMS and email anyway

Oh Dang. The inability to make a call due to mate 9 might be deal breaker. Are you able to view incoming caller name/number and accept call? Had you try third party dailer to see if it work? Since you have mate 9 and gear s3. Are the reply options from notification work? Like manually type or hand writing reply incoming What's app, hangout and Facebook messenger. And also, do the music player remote control work with stock music player? Do it display the current track playing properly?
Thanks
Just to be clear, there are two versions of the Frontier, one has an LTE radio. The LTE model is able to handle calls, texts, and run apps like Spotify without being connected to a phone. The BT model must be tethered to a phone in order to do these functions. Both models need to be connected (via BT or cellular) to a phone in order for notifications (ie. Hangouts, email) to pass through.

I know this question was from weeks ago but as I also have a S3 with a Mate 9, maybe I can help a little bit:
Everything works, including getting all notifications and asnwering them from the watch, and making and receiving calls in the watch. I have the S3 BT only model. My Mate 9 is with stock rom. Samsung Gear Manager working perfectly.
I have just one issue: sometimes, when I make a call using the phone, the call is automatically routed to the watch, without my permission, and it seems there is not any configuration or parameter to force all calls to not be routed to the watch. Of course it is easy to bring the call back to the phone (using the BT button in the dial), but as I initiated the call from the phone, it should not be redirected to the watch at the beginning. And this is something that happens eventually, not allways. It seems to be some kind of bug. I read about the same issue in other threads (S3 with other non-Samsung phones) here in XDA but could not find a definitive solution yet. If somebody can help on this, I would appreciate.

I'm using a Pixel XL as well and I'm planning to buy one. What limitations do you encounter when pair to the Pixel? Samsung Pay is also one of my reasons to buy this. Is it fully functional?
UPDATE:
Samsung Pay fully functional. But there are limitations if you use Gear S3 with non Samsung phone and BT headset (mine is Level U Pro ANC).
1. Call profile could only be activated either on the watch or level u pro, but not both simultaneously. If you choose to keep call profile on BT headset, you can use the headset for calling, but you cannot initiate call or answer call from watch. If you choose to keep call profile on watch, you cannot use BT headset for calling. That's also the case with car BT.
2. You can receive and reply to SMS on watch. But initiating SMS is a different story. No built in SMS so on watch so you can use watchface with messages shortcut to initiate sms, BUT all sms you initiate thru the watch WILL NOT REFLECT on the sms thread on the phone itself (Android Messages).
3. You cannot see your SMS history as well.
Hi, I can't get any notification from Phone SMS (Messages) apps on my Huawey Watch 2 LTE, I tried to reset all settings but no way. Can you help me out?
Did you install the "messengers" app in your watch? Not the facebook one.
Hello, do you mean messaging from Google? It's already installed. I don't see any Messengers app for Wear. Can you send me the link?
I also do not get any notification from calls on the phone, do you know why?
Are you sure right connected via android wear app with your smartphone and pairing went well to your watch? If you get zero notifications it´s a connection issue between the devices. If all correct try to clear the data / caches of your notificated apps on your watch or reset the pairing on your smartphone and pair it again.
I do get all notifications but phone calls and SMSs, what should I do?
Go to your play store in your watch, scroll down and see if there is an messagers app allow you to install in watch.
The app "Feel the Wear" will allows you to do what you are after
Hello AstroDigital, thank you for the tip, the app Feel the Wear solved the issue on the sound side, I get now the vibrations for calls and SMS but still no visual notification on the smartphone, do you know how I could also get the visual feedback?
Hi,
I know there are a couple of WhatsApp threads but my query is different.
As I understand, there is no WhatsApp app for Android Wear 2.0 but notifications are sent to the watch. In that case, is it necessary that the watch and phone are connected via Bluetooth?
If not i.e. WhatsApp can work via an independent connection, I have another query.
In India, eSim isn't permitted and I'm sure I can't get two sim cards with the same number. In that case, I'll require a sim card with a separate connection. My WhatsApp would be linked to my primary number which is in the phone.
In this case, if I'm away from the phone (say on a run that I never seem to get up on time to go) and LTE is on, will I still get notifications via this connection?
Thanks

In short...yes! The simcard you insert in the watch enables a 3g/4g connection on the watch. Doesnt matter which phone number the watch has. When no longer connected through bluetooth with a phone the 3g/4g connection replaces the bluetooth connection. So every notification received on the phone is send to the watch using its 3g/4g dataconnection, including whatsapp. You can even reply to them, even start a new conversation using Google assistant.
Ofcourse this can only work of your phone is connected to the internet, because it needs to send all notifications to the watch through the internet.

Ah so that means this works similar to WhatsApp Web. The web browser or the watch in this case is just a thin client with a display while all the heavy lifting is being done by the phone.
Is this true for other messaging platforms that have apps such as Telegram, Skype and FB messenger or can they work even if the phone is switched off/ doesn't have network?
Thanks
Since it only shows notifications, I presume I cannot open any chat on the phone and see the chat history? Or that if I swipe away a notification, I can't read it or reply it to it save using "ok Google" to send a message.

Thanks for your replies, really helps me understand this watch better.
If there are multiple messages, either from one contact or from more than one, does it show all messages with an option to reply to them individually or does it show only the first/ last message like Gear S3 does?
I know I have a lot of questions, plonking down $400 on a luxury item is a huge decision to take!

I sent it back, it just wasn't useable... sim was in the watch. But it wouldn't work when on cellular or BT. I don't know what build-in is. I really liked the watch as well.
I have SIM in watches, SMS/calls work fine. I dont use any primary phone (just a virtual machine with x86 android).
There is a setting if you want to send notifications or read SMS on watches while they are nearby phone or not. I guess that was the whole issue.
I have the same problem. I have a SIM in the watch. I hardly use it for calls or text but sometimes I need to reconfirm something via text and those SMS messages never arrive. It is not a settings issue as very randomly I get some old texts. Strange. Weird.
