[Note 10+] When Setting no screen lock, device unlocks on its own - General Questions and Answers

I prefer not having a screen lock over swipe for a couple reasons. Anyways I found that for some reason, after receiving any form of notification, text, email, etc; the device will unlock on its own. I just factory reset the device right now and It's still doing it. So obviously this is an intended feature. So dumb. Also since charging causes a notification to appear on my screen, that will unlock it as well. Is there a solution for this via third party tools? I really don't want to have to go back to swipe if I can.
Thanks in advance.

I use double tap on/off for my N10+'s.
The screen notifications you want not to show?
They don't cause any harm, use much battery, and not a security risk other than what they display as they are automatically isolated by the firmware and have limited functionality.
Double Tap works on Android 9 and 10 but maybe not 11.

Double tapping to unlock screen is a native feature of the no lock screen type. The problem is, notifications automatically cause the screen to unlock. This seems like an intended behavior for android because I noticed this on the past 3 androids I've used.
My question is, can this be fixed with some third party tool?

The Double tap app lets you turn off the display too by double tapping.
Disable notifications for it...

It looks like in the newest version of android they fixed the unlocking issue with notifications when using no screen lock, however, my device unlocks itself after charging has been disconnected (whether by cable or wireless). Also annoying. Does this app you mentioned fix that too?

My N10+ is always unlocked, no password, fingerprint, etc are/were ever set. It's normal behavior for the screen to come on after unplugging the charger. I tap it off if I don't want to use it...
Lock screen notifications aren't an issue at least on Pie, haven't checked my N10+ running on Android 10
I can enable or disable them as I please. They consume little power. Tap on AOD however does save about .5%@hr of battery.

Is there a way to stop my screen from unlocking after charging is paused with a third party app? Its just one more android annoyance I am trying to resolve after I recently had to reset my phone. Next time I will use apple because I find that 90% of the so called "superior android customizations" that I make are just to fix oversights of the platform itself.

What's the issue in that it does this?
Power off phone, charge... problem solved.
I never considered this an issue at all.
The N10+ is a better phone than any Apple. No Apple display can touch the N10+'s display color rendering index specs. No SD card, no spen and no control over the firmware... Apple sucks.

The whole point of android is that it is "more customizable" to accommodate different users' preferences.
When you have dozens of small oversights like this, it collectively adds up to a poor and unsatisfactory expiereince.
So you are telling me I should power off my phone as a "fix" to the screen unlocking itself ON ITS OWN? What if I am getting ready to put it in my pocket? You probably don't want your device unlocked in your pocket for an extended period of time do you? So to prevent that, it would require user input to relock the screen.
So in a nutshell, android made a feature that is useless and annoying 9 times out of 10 with no disable option... If this feature requires your input to return to the previous state 9 times out of 10 or more, then that is a feature that causes unwanted outcomes 90% of the time. Look up the definition of annoying.
The complaints you are listing about iPhone are not design flaws or oversights like this. Most people don't need SD cards unless you download an excessive amount of "videos" and music. The s-pen is not even fully supported by samsung apps, as there is no way to globally disable finger touch input when writing causing unwanted actions to be performed, making the whole thing just a samsung marketing gimmick. There are styluses that you can purchase for iPhone, that can fit inside a holster, in the rare case that one would need a stylus for a smartphone.
Long story short, apple just has better design choices. It took android 10 years to disable notification unlock when using no screen lock, so what does that tell you? The latest gripe I have now besides this that caused my whole device to be bricked is the stupid system notifications that cannot be disabled. I thought android was more customizable?

Your initial complaint was it going screen after unplugging the charger?
In pocket turn ons... turn display away from skin.
A good case like the Zizo Bolt helps prevent this too; a good case is mandatory for this phone or it will be destroyed.
I really don't have any of these issues with my N10+'s. They run great, fast with good battery life, are stock, heavily optimized and customized.
They behave almost exactly how I want them to.
An Apple* can't touch them.
You need a basic understanding of the Android variant you own to do this, gained largely by just playing with them, but I read a lot as well.
But by all means go to an iPhone... they work.
*I've used Apples for work... never would have one for personal use. Far too limited and hamstringed... by design.

great app
thanks for posting this good app, it is so greate and useful that i use it every time when i use my phone.
i like the quick luanch function most, hereever i am, it is easy and quick to switch to another app.
also i can organized all my apps by different lables. then i can catch it easily by related lable.
of cource it goes smooth on my phone and till now, i have not found any defect to remove it.
my pleasure to share it with everyone.
Nice app. Uses a good amount of cpu tho and the visuals could use a bit of polish but definitely effective. Looking forward to see it develop.
Hi,
CPU usage if Smart taskbar should be no different than regualr Android app. You are seeing high CPU occupation because you do a lot of scroll in app list. Try yourself and scroll grid list in other app such as gallery and you will see similar CPU usage.
Since getting my Legend over 4 months ago I've been looking for something like this.
This seems to fit the bill, I will be sure to check it out! Just hope the CPU related comments are as per the OP's response ^.
EDIT: Oops, not what I thought it was. I thought this would 'pin' certain apps to the notification area for quick access.
Yes, you are correct the scrolling taxes cpu on any app so that is fair enough. I would like to see widgets integrated somehow similar to the way power strip does and I would use this exclusively for sure.
I am really happy with the app. Works great and has let me clan up my home screen. Much better then I thought it would be.

It is truly a personal preference question. But notification doesn't show up in full screen app. In this case, u can't access to quick launcher. In addition, u need to (1) expand notification bar, (2) click on notification item, (3) click on the item u wish to launch. It is 3 steps. Anyway, just like i said, it is pure personal preference question. Hope you can find it useful eventually.
Wow, works great and is just great!! This is definitly a Must-have app!
I was hoping to give this app a try, but the developer decided to pull it of most non english markets see http://kiumiu.wordpress.com/2010/08/27/closing-most-non-english-user-on-market/
Can anyone give me an apk so I can give it a try?
tia
Looks like it would work great - but DOES NOT scale, if you've changed your LCD density. The click button to slide it out shows in the middle of the screen!
If the scaling issue gets resolved, it would be fantastic. In the meantime, it's very difficult to use it if you've changed the LCD density.
EDIT: Found it using an american ID on market-enabler, looks like its still in some of the english ones.

That's what I was hoping for too...
I like this overall, but I do think it has a few weaknesses.
First, app scrolling is very slow, I'm used to fast scrolling in my device whether it's LauncherPro or Touchwiz. I'd be willing to deal with cached icons or anything else for a short term fix. (Korean Galaxy S, SHW-m110s)
Second, while in the app I can't use my home button, which means, if I want to use home button to get home I can't. It also means I lose access to QuickDesk while in your app.
Overall, I'd recommend this, especially to those who don't use something like QD. Still, this has a more complete experience than QD so that's a definite plus over it, but QD has a real speed advantage as well as it's where I put power control widget for it's easy access within apps. I could see using this heavily with faster speed, even still due it's customizations that I haven't yet utlized it's probably better than I've already stated. Thanks for the good work, Dev, looking forward to more!

Same here. I can hit the 'open' button, but if I press the settings icon...it goes to the 'how to use' screen with the blue hand on it. The only thing I can do from there is open the dock...which works...but I would really like to access the settings menu. I am keeping the .apk, but have uninstalled as of now for failure to access settings.

I initially had the same problem. I think you have to click "dismiss", then after that, access settings from within the main screen of the app (it might've been from hitting the menu button, but I don't think that was my method, though they probably do the same). There are only 2 settings in the "settings" menu though. Other settings/customizations will be found within the app itself, such as pinning most common favorite apps to your easy to launch area.
I'll edit if the developer corrects me on anything, I only played around with it for about 15 minutes.
Like I said, I basically like the app, however, I encountered a big problem with it in the past 12 hours since my original post. My "Android OS" usage shot through the roof when I was asleep. I'm a guy who, at least when at home and definitely when asleep, doesn't use 3G, so I leave it off. Also, I don't use sync, so my Android OS is typically very low 2-4% and I get insane standby time in my Galaxy S, 1-2% drain in a typical night. Last night, I probably drained at least 30% but I think closer to 40%. Something is going on with the app that doesn't let my phone stay in standby mode.
Then this morning, I was very tired, so perhaps I slept through my smart alarm (it's somewhat quiet, though not very, and it'd only be the 2nd time and the first time the speaker was blocked). I was surprised when I was woken up by a backup alarm on my phone, so most functionality definitely remained. But then, 15 minutes later, my last resort alarm didn't go off, and I was monitoring the phone a bit to make sure it would. Right after it was supposed to another (very stable app, not to be named) force closed for maybe the 2nd time in it's life on me (no update in at least a week). Right after that, my power button wouldn't function to turn my screen off, it still brought up options to do things like Airplane mode, power off, etc, but touch to turn screen off doesn't work (and I leave my timer off).
I think updated I'll really like this app, plenty of potential here, but I have to uninstall. Thanks though.
Battery life issues (less phone sleep/standby)
Seemed to cause conflict with another app, but it could've been coincidence
Slow app scrolling

Hi,
I am developing on Galaxy too. Your phone lock up issue is basically caused by smart Alarm. when it happens, Smart Alarm doesn't make any sound, CPU usage of Smart alarm goes to 60-80%. At same time, my phone gets so hot like 40-50 'c. I am very sure this will happen to you even after uninstalling Smart Taskbar. Not using Smart Alarm is the only way to solve it. I am not sure is it fixed in later firmware release. In addition, my app doesn't use any wake lock. Therefore it doesn't block your phone from going to standby.
For battery life issue, I have used SystemPanel to monitor one week CPU time usage of my app, basically it uses less than 0.1% overall. Therefore, should have very very small battery drain.
For slow scroll, I do use cached app list. Launcher Pro is simply too great. Nothing can compare to its super smooth scrolling so far. But I think my app performs on par with standard launcher
By the way, are u using Galaxy S or the old 7500 Galaxy?

FAQs:
Help, my phone keeps locking and I can't use it!
First, try turning your phone upside down and unlocking it. If that works, then you have an issue with your gravity sensor. If that doesn't work, them you have may an issue with your proximity sensor. Restart the phone and quickly open Pocket Lock and change the locking method to "Do not lock", then let me know!
How do I uninstall Pocket Lock?
Use the uninstall option in the Pocket Lock menu.
Why does my phone turn off when I'm using it?
This is likely because the proximity sensor is accidentally getting covered. Try setting the lock delay higher and be careful to avoid the proximity sensor with your fingers. If this still does not work, just change the lock method to not use the proximity sensor at all, which should eliminate the problem entirely.
Why doesn't Pocket Lock unlock my phone?
The Android operating system will slow down the rate of sensor events or even stop sensors when the screen is off in order to save power. While this is great for your battery life, this means that if your phone has been off for a while, Pocket Lock may not wake it up immediately. I have noticed that the proximity sensor seems less prone to this problem than the other sensors, so try covering and then uncovering the proximity sensor.
Why does Pocket Lock use so much battery?
Pocket Lock has to keep your phone's sensors on in order to lock and unlock the screen. Some sensor use more power than others, which will in turn use more battery. Check the Diagnostics page and look at the value for Proximity sensor power usage and Gravity sensor power usage. Change your lock method to only use whichever sensor has the lower value. Consider trying the accelerometer to save battery.
Why does my phone turn off in the dark?
That's your phone manufacturer cheaping out by not using a quality proximity sensor! I would suggest changing your lock method to not use the proximity sensor.
Excluded applications doesn't work!
Recent versions of Android broke the original way Pocket Lock detected what application was running. Please try out excluding at least one app before buying pro If you've bought pro and excluded apps doesn't work, forward your order confirmation to [email protected] and I'll refund you.
What if I only want Pocket Lock to lock/unlock my phone?
In the lock method setting, you can change the locking sensor or unlocking sensor to "Do not lock" or "Do not unlock"
What apps are Pocket Lock incompatible with?
Pocket Lock may not play well with apps like No Lock, SkipLock, custom lock screens, or anything that messes with the lock screen or how the phone locks. Pocket Lock should not cause problems for other apps, though, because it's nice
How can I make Pocket Lock work with delayed lock/smart lock/custom lock screens?
Enable the "Alternate screen off method" setting. Note that the screen may now take a few seconds to turn off.
Why does Pocket Lock need the permission "Device ID & call information: read phone status and identity"?
This is so that Pocket Lock can detect when you're in a call and not lock your phone.
Why does Pocket Lock need the permission to modify system settings?
This is only used if you use the Alternate screen off method. Instead of force-locking your screen, Pocket Lock simply changes your screen timeout to zero, then back to your original setting after locking.

Thanks for the suggestions! The blacklist is definitely on the to do list, though I want to make sure the basic functionality works well before starting on that. Pocket Mode is something I hadn't thought of that I'll have to look into. Right now, the app will relock the screen if a notification turns it on, though. Active screen is a cool idea, but I'm not sure if Pocket Lock's purpose warrants adding something like that. I believe there are already pretty good apps for that and Pocket Lock plays well with them. You can set Pocket Lock to just lock the screen and then those apps can unlock when they need to.

Right now, that is how it works, yes. Eventually I will add some sort of delayed lock, like Android has naively, but for now, this most closely stimulates pushing the power button. If I just turn off the screen instead of locking the screen, Android may not enter a low power state. Thanks for using Pocket Lock!
Does this cause wakelocks to keep the screen active? How bad is it for battery life?

Pocket Lock does not use any wakelocks when the screen is on and only very briefly uses a wake lock when unlocking the screen (probably under 100ms). The biggest concern in terms of battery life is how much power your phone's sensors use. Generally, proximity sensor use less power, so if you're worried about power usage, change your lock method to only use the proximity sensor.
You can also check how many milliamps your sensors use on the Diagnostics page in the app.
Working great mate, I will be running it to see how well it works for my uses. Previously I lost my power button on my s3, since then I have been using a gestures to lock. With the home button being my goto button, well I would hate to lose it!
Hopefully this will be battery friendly and efficient for my uses. Thanks mate!

Hopefully this will be battery friendly and efficient for my uses. Thanks mate!

Hey, great to hear! If you go to the Diagnostics page in the app and tell me the values for Proximity sensor power usage and Gravity sensor power usage, I can give you an estimate of how much power the app uses and what combination of sensors will use the least power.
Just uploaded the latest update onto the Google Play Store! Let me know what features you'd like to see in the next update. Right now, I'm thinking I'll add the option to use the accelerometer instead of the gravity sensor (saves power), and the option to change the proximity sensor sampling rate.
I tried your app yesterday and while it locked the phone just as expected when I put it in my pocket it took very long (about 2 seconds) to turn on the screen when I took it out of the pocket. I changed the turn on time to very low value (20ms) but that didn't change anything. Will see what the new update brings and if that changes anything.

Hmm, that's rather strange. What phone are you using? It's possible that Android is slowing down the sensor events when the screen is off to save battery, so it might have taken a while to detect it was out of your pocket.

It's a Nexus 5 running the Slimkat Custom ROM. Not sure if that's helping...
I am trying the all "gravity screen on" now and it's turning the screen on instantly, so sensors shouldn't be the problem.

I left it on standard, so both methods.
I didn't change any other setting, only the setting I mentioned above. Well try the new version as soon as I see it in playstore (shows old version so for).
EDIT:
New version seems to work better/faster. I still uninstalled it, as i found out that for my phone usage i am better off without an automatic on/off app. I usually have my phone in the backpocket and before i sit down i take it out but don´t want it to turn actually on or i carry the phone around in my hands.
Anyway good luck with the app!

Good to hear the new version is working better. Hey, thanks for using Pocket Lock!
New update just uploaded. I've sort of given up on the gravity sensor. Even though it's supposed to be more accurate, it tends to use way more power and seems to have problems on Samsung phones. The next update will default to using the accelerometer, though there is an easy checkbox to disable that change.
Could you guys let me know what the Gravity sensor power usage and the Accelerometer sensor power usage values in the Diagnostics screen show? I'm pretty sure that the accelerometer should universally use less power.
Just downloaded this a few hours ago and it's been great. The app UI itself is nice, too!
I particularly like the vibrate/sound on lock and unlock. Any chance you'd let us pick our own sound in the future?

Question Understanding Notifications and Outer Display Orange Dot

On my Flip 3 the outer display orange dot does not show when I have a new phone call or text message notifications (when I open the phone badges show missed calls or messages). I do get the orange dot for missed Gmail mail and some other things.
Do I need to set some setting in order to enable the orange dot for missed calls or messages?
Thanks,
Barry.
Hi,
I did a test and everything working fine for me. Try checking the notification settings for you message and phone app. I guess the orange dot is only showing if notifications are turned on

Thanks. That's good to know.
On my phone notifications are turned on for both the default phone app and default messaging app.
For the default phone app, notifications appear to be turned on, but the slide switches are grayed out. I am not able to control those notifications by turning them off or on – the switch is to the right so they appear to be on, but the switch is gray not green.
For the default messaging app, the switch is to the right, it's green, and I can switch notifications off and on – they are currently on.
I have a feeling I might know why I'm not receiving that notification dot. I have that phone number forwarded to Google Voice. If I don't answer, Google Voice picks up and takes a message. Google Voice says something about also handling messages, although I don't know how that works. I receive messages on my phone. Once Google Voice told me I had a new message, but other times no. I don't remember seeing that orange dot when I receive a new message. I will have to test it some more.
Barry.
Phone app showing the same for me. I think these are the default settings.

I tried to reproduce the behavior for the messages. Only way it does not show the orange dot is by turning off notifications at all or activating DND (without setting exception to show notification while DND mode).
Unfortunately Google voice is not available here, so I can't test it.

Thanks. That's how my phone app notifications look – buttons grayed out.
I will have to play with this some more.

Notifications on this phone are garbage. At least from the standpoint of knowing when you have one without manually turning the exterior screen on.
When you get a notification the exterior screen turns on for like a second and that's it.
They need options..like edge lighting or a simple blinking dot because unless you saw it turn on for that spit second then tough luck. If Someone sent you an important text or email and you didn't see the screen flash on then off you're out of luck.
It's ridiculous. It's lazy and I expect better from a company like Samsung...
I deeply regret buying this phone for just that reason alone..

True but that's fundamentally the same as tapping the exterior screen twice to see if there's a notification dot.
Im hoping the developer of aodnotify @Jawomo can use the code in another thread (located here https://bit.ly/3n0VG5d) that allows you to do things with the exterior display like edge lighting or a blinking dot and plenty more but the first 2 would be helpful for notifications received when you weren't looking at the phone.
I just don't understand why Samsung limited the exterior screen options so much. It seems like such an obvious idea to be able to tweak notification settings for the exterior screen...but Samsung seems to always go half way on their software... Except for their extreme and broken battery saving methods. Like say you don't open your clock app for 3 days... Even if you have an alarm set for day 4 their over aggressive battery software will put the app to sleep and not allot it to run in the background..and your alarm won't go off on day 4. Even if you allow an app to run in the background and disable battery optimization for that app this still happens.
You can sort of disable it so it's less aggressive but looking at the settings you might not know 100% what it's actually doing and your average user probably won't change any of those settings.
I miss the good old time swhen you just had a simple LED Notification light Maybe to simple

Me too...me too.
It can't be that hard to implement lol. Even if you use the screen as a fake LED I'd be happy.
Agree notification light is something extremely useful. Last time i 've had it on Mi 9 or Note 9 phone. Rest in piece! Only Xperia offers it nowadays.
Also think Z Flip notifications are great and bad at the same time. You have widgets, you can swipe notifications away, you can read long messages and people can see themselves on that screen. Now with AOD off, you have permanent charging notification which is wonderful. That exactly emulates a white (pulsing) notification light. But with AOD on, situation changes. Charging status is suddenly impossible to read. Oh, the microscopic battery icon, not again. Notifications pop up for a quick period of time. Orange dot sometimes disappears. There should be app icons instead like on normal AOD!

The only widget I find useful is the timer. Swiping notifications away is fine but doesn't really help let me know I have some unless I actively go looking.
Having the charge screen on all the time doesn't appeal to me either, if I want to see it I'll just tap the screen. Ive never liked things staying on all the time, not even the clock but I know plenty of people do so I understand why it's an option.
The orange dot is pretty useless. It disappears if you turn the exterior screen on even if it's just to see the time and you don't touch anything else.
That's why I wish someone would make edge lighting for the exterior screen. The code needed to make it work has been posted but who knows if someone will do it.
Like I said I use aodnotify to basically keep the exterior screen turned on for 2 min when I get any kind of notification. That way I can look over and know. I always have my phone on vibrate and vibration on Samsung phones is so weak. On ever phone I've owned that wasn't Samsung I could hear the vibration from across the room but with the note 9, 10+ and this I can't hear it vibrate when it's a couple feet away.
Samsung... Always going half way when it comes to their software. No idea how they became number 1.

to be fair, no other brand is close to Samsung software like I moaned here. Several times i returned the phone like Sony, Alcatel because of dead blank OS. Quit OnePlus because of that too. Xiaomi has just a overmodified bloatware and spyware. There's no brand that can compete with Samsung regarding software.
Also it's Samsung that can notify you in a brutal way -- do the edge effect, blink with flash, repeat notifications until you notice.. This creates an explosive cocktail of effects you can't miss. I'd just prolong the notification time, it's really short. But it's the same with other brands!
Avoided 3rd party notif light apps, as they burn battery quick. But i tried aodnotify as it promises something different. It's highly configurable but can't modify the small screen. I have the phone closed 99% of time so it's useless for me But thanks for the tip, i will use in next time, if i ever will have a classic phone.

Wait... First off there is no edge lighting on this phone. It's irrelevant if there is on other Samsung phones especially since you can get better edge lighting via aodnotify and it doesn't use much battery at all. Ive used it for years and it's very efficient. In fact I've used plenty of notification apps like one on the original Pixel to give me a blinking LED style notification light that changed color based on app and it barely used any battery either. Plus you can get edge lighting on any phone by using an app. Samsung's own edge lighting is horrible. It lacks granularity in it's settings and features. aodnotify fixes all of that as do tons of other notification apps but aod is the best for edge lighting and the z Flip3.
aodnotify does work with the z Flip3. First if the phone is open (screen on or off) it will provide edge lighting or other effects like fake LED, camera hole light etc. If the phone is closed aodnotify will let you make it so the exterior screen can be set to stay on as long as you want when you get a notification. So it is useful for the z Flip3. I don't know how you missed the settings for always on display but mines set to always off unless a notification is received. Then it's enabled, screen set to stay on for 2 min unless the notification is cleared. Very helpful, especially since Samsung basically has no notification options.
As for Samsung software being good... I completely disagree. Also other companies default software is irrelevant, Samsung makes massive profits every year on phones. They should be able to make decent apps. The majority of them are rated 3 stars or less on the Galaxy store.
It's buggy, it lacks options and features and not only is there a massive amount of bloat, some of it is basically spyware sending everything you do to Samsung. Thankfully I can block that with Adguard.
Googles apps are superior in every way despite the fact that GAPPS is just supposed to be the basic frame work for what these kinda of apps should be. Samsung SHOULD have far superior apps with way more options and better UI's than GAPPS but they don't. Their dialer is super basic, so is contacts. Their messaging app doesn't support RCS and it's ugly. The calendar, calculator...all of it worse then GAPPS.
Then there's their ridiculous changes to battery management. Instead of using what's built into Android they made a custom solution that's beyond overly aggressive.
Let's say you work mon-fri every week but you take Friday off so on Wednesday or Thursday you open the clock app and shut off the alarm for Friday. When Monday comes your alarm won't go off because their battery software has put it to deep sleep even though you set it up so it can run in the background AND you disabled battery optimization for the app. It's ridiculous and actually breaks some apps. It can also cause delays in getting text messages and emails. It can even cause wifi calling to break mid call.
I could go on with tons of in depth issues but I think that's enough for now. I expect better from the #1 mobile phone company. Much better. I've given them 5 chances if you count the galaxy nexus which felt cheaply made but thankfully didn't run Samsung software...
So once a year goes by and the next pixel comes out there's a 99% chance I'll buy it and sell this z Flip3. The only way I wouldn't get a pixel is if Microsoft makes a duo 3 and actually tries or another company makes a really good phone that can also be rooted. Regardless of what I buy there's one thing I know for sure...it won't be made by Samsung

I'm back in the Samsung camp because of the software. Been there since SPlus phone (as the era of HTC was ending) with some interruption. I've listed dozens of reasons in the linked post. You want more from this company while you're getting nothing from the others. Samsung is not in the business of Gapps, so it's not fair to mention it, and you shouldn't use such spyware anyway (then why you care about adguard?). I've used Google "phone apps" (caller, calendar, photos) and it was too simple. Who still gives you rich LOCAL music player, who still gives you LOCAL video player (other brands cancelled both). Gallery with post edit, map, s-pen zoom and gestures (Note) is good, no need google Photos. Who gives you best calendar app with nice UI, weather, home timezone, spen preview? I've seen anything comparable to that other than ver geeky apps on the market. Caller which plays recorded calls directly from UI? Lovely. Love the call popup settings that others don't gives you. Who gives you OneUI, 10x richer than other layouts while fast. Onehand mode, or even scroll the screen down basic function of OneUI. The one and only legendary Edge panel that can't be replicated (tried ALL clones). The best AOD, best edge lightning + flash + screen effects (for large screen). Best accessibility options in market period. Best functional camera. You can still say cheeeese to shoot and no other brands can do. You can recognize objects, scan documents or get assistance in shooting situations. And so much more. I'd rate Samsung software ******** while OnePlus ** Sony ** Xiaomi ** LG ** etc. Don't know about Google but i assume it's the same mediocrity (again i don't count their non-phone apps). And i'm heavily debloated, work without Samsung account and still profit from this ecosystem heavily.
Yes they kill apps https://dontkillmyapp.com/ but is perfectly manageable. All you do is choose few core apps and prioritize them, while the most garbage gets killed. This approach is very helpful for battery and OnePlus invented it (that's why they always had nice scores on gsmarena). I moaned first, but now i agree.
Pixel 6 is a horrid phone based on people, and now heavy (that's why i chose ZFlip), let's see next year.
Samsung just pushed AOD app update for ZFlips. I tested the orange dot and it works for all messages and calls. It even blinks. Again, no other firmwares i know incl AOSP offers longer notifications than this. It's always displayed shortly or not at all. Samsung of course has the most configurable AOD and notifications with color highlighting, color match app, bubbles, smart popups. Split app from task manager or Edge panel. It's insane. You can even prolong the AOD notification timeout in the settings or even the toast messages! Here we found the glitch. This setting simply needs to apply on cover screen too and problem solved. Let's wait for another update, i'm sure it will come. It's not like in other brands where phone software stays the same for years.
There's no edge effect on the cover screen (yet!), but that flash makes me jump out of bed. Expecting a major company to produce geeky nice apps like aodnotify is very unrealistic. It won't happen. BTW I still can't make aodnotify work with cover screen. I went through all the settings and it has zero impact there.
I just played with Bixby settings.. you can set action when folded, half folded, unfolded. Stay unlocked when driving. Hundreds of settings. Talking about Samsung not having enough functionality or settings.. oh no, that's so wrong. ZFlip 4 is in my preorder basket.

It's perfectly fair to compare Samsung's version of GAPPS to Google's.. messaging app vs messaging app. Calendar vs Calendar.
The spyware is a HIDDEN service always running in the background and I care about Adguard because it blocks ads, trackers and analytics in ALL apps and it works as a firewall. Go to adguard.com and look. The play store version is NOT Adguard, it's an extension for 2 browsers.
I got the latest update and no...the exterior screen does not have a blinking dot. When you get a notification the exterior screen turns on for a couple seconds and then shuts off. You can see the dot if you double tap the screen but that's not helpful. I want something to blink when I get a notification without me needing to touch the phone.
I'm glad you like Samsung's apps but I can get better versions of everything they offer. I can use Google apps for my dialer, contacts, messages, calendar, calculator and clock. I use Nova as my launcher because OneUI is too basic. I use Google now via Nova and Google assistant instead of Bixby. Bixby is god awful and once again google does it better.
Yeah you can change some settings for battery management but then you have NO battery management. Also the average person isn't going to know any of this so they will fall victim to apps not working and alarms not going off. That's poor design.
So I can say I think Samsung's software is terrible and you can like it.
I'm too tired to read the rest so I'll do it tomorrow.

perhaps i imagine Gapps as Maps etc or the office apps. But let's say it's all Google apps. I've had Pixel ROMs which were based on Google apps you mentioned and didn't notice anything special. Just pure basic. Or forcing to online services. Samsung wins for privacy, i don't like to be tracked so i run those local media players w/o access to internet. I like DLNA, screen mirror stuff. There are no players on other mobiles nowadays and often with DLNA turned off (to force you social networks). Clock - better too, with repetitions until you wake the f*** up. With weather time zones. Calculator - better because it's in Edge panel, super productive. Who else has it? Debloated Bixby - BixbyVision suits me better and I removed Google spyware app completely. Most of it can work offline. Bixby Voice - i don't use such technology until it will be OFFLINE. Bixby routines - fantastic. SmartThings + Audio + Devices on notifpanel - didn't see anything like that before. I can control home devices or cameras from lockscreen! File manager - better, and it connects to web folders and samba (oh my god, thanks). I'm sure Google will give you a chance to connect... to GDrive $$ LOL. Camera better than Gcam as noted. GCam ports = placebo. Camera "AR" very rich and more private than a typical ad-infested apps on market. Samsung Kids - what? Absolutely incredible. And with home screen lock for parents. There's even a general "Pin lock" i again didn't see on the other brands. Samsung Keyboard - very strong even vs GBoard and other brands which provide... nothing. Screen recorder, audio recorder, animation, capture scrolling screen, capture rectangle then extract text - wow. Where are these functions on other brands? I have 5 flagships yearly and I don't recall none of it, maybe i have a short memory And Note series add even more. Smart Stay - great (other brands? hello? Sony has one - kudos!). Edge compass, ruler, torch - so useful. Quick measure - thanks, another adware from appstore spared. Dual messenger - multiple accounts of one chat app? OK! Finder app? don't get my started. There's no competition, forget Sezame. I've spend years searching for an alternative. Is it available from task manager? Yes. Can you drag a window from task manager to a popup or split screen? Yes, and you don't need a stupid tap like on Sony. From Edge panel too. Emergency app on 4 power clicks - thanks (3 clicks = always a mistake). Samsung flow - display Android screen on PC + notifications? Great, no need to pay. Samsung Notes - lengedary. Samsung Pass. Secure folder. Samsung Swich. Samsung Health. Smart View. Tons of notification panel's actionable icons. It just keeps giving. It's insane how much MORE you get with Samsung.
And launcher? Of course I use Nova or similar. But does it mean anyone else got a better one than OneUI? Who? I know: absolutely noone, so why mention it? I don't get the hate. That's the industry standard for vendor launchers - be basic, not to scare the public with overwhelming functionality.
-> Overall, I rate Samsung firmware as 5-10x better than closest competitor. It's a knock out win. This is why I left Xiaomi, OnePlus, Sony, LG and Google, and returned back to the best brand. I was tired of vanilla OS and hated the low investments they make to it. It actually make Samsung cheap.
Re dot - it's there nonstop until you review notifications and it's blinking after an event like missed call. Perhaps you don't have AOD on. Phones w/o notif.light won't provide permanent notification with AOD off it seems. So far the only perma message text displayed on screen i saw was on Garmin watches. 10 letters of most recent notification. Yeah i keep them because of this. I wish it came to mobile phones too. For aesthetic reasons, i don't think it will. Imagine stuffing clock, date, battery, app icon, sender name, text into one small screen. At this point, i just want to prolong the timeout. It's too short.
Re alarms - they're triggered every day. Maybe you're using Naptime to kill it. Kudos to OnePlus to be a rare brand which can turn on the phone to raise alarm. I thought this died with HTC or simple phone era.
Samsung is worse than Google for privacy. They send more data to themselves than Google does.
Thankfully Adguard blocks all that crap.
As for GAPPS v Samsung... They are just as simple ok the Samsung side by with worse UI's. Plus I prefer simple.
If I want something good I'll just get it from the store.
This is definitely my last Samsung phone. I'll probably go with a pixel next but as long as it's hardware is good and it can be rooted then brand isnt as important.
Then I can use whatever rom I want. Back to battery...if you disable Samsung battery functions then you basically cut battery life in half. They seem to have disabled the built in battery saving functions from AOSP so when you shut that insanely aggressive management off...you get nothing.
I would prefer if it worked like my older note used to work. I had ability to just have orange dot notification. Also I was able to set a different color for notifications that came from the "secure folder" apps.

OP7Pro/OOS - How long does an app remain in the "ACTIVE" App Standby Bucket after manually being put there?

I am running OOS 10.3.8 (rooted) on my OP 7Pro. I run the following command to force a certain app into the "ACTIVE" App Standby Bucket ...
am set-standby-bucket package.name active
After doing this, how long will the app remain in that "ACTIVE" bucket under this version of OOS? Will it live there forever because of the fact that I put it there with the above command? Or will the OS eventually take over and perhaps move it to a different bucket? All the docs I could find about this topic state that each OS has its own way of managing the placement of apps into these buckets. I'm wondering whether anyone knows specifically how OOS 10.3.8 does this.
I want that particular app to always live in the "ACTIVE" bucket, and so if the OS eventually moves it, I will have to periodically put it back into "ACTIVE", which I can easily do via Tasker.
Thank you in advance for any thoughts about this.
On Samsung's if power management is disabled all app buckets stay in the active state.
If you do not enable power management the bucket state will not alter.

Thank you very much. Does anyone know how this functions specifically in Oxygen OS on an OP 7Pro? There is nothing in the settings for that OS called "Power Management".

Interesting.
Samsung customizes their UI heavily. Not sure how other manufacturers handle this. Lol, using power management in my case on Samsung's leads to erratic behavior and heavier power consumption even after days
If all buckets show as active and if trying to reset their bucket state will not take (change state, close Developer options then reopen to see if it took), then nothing more should need to be done. The apps apps are already running in their active bucket state which is the default setting.
That doesn't mean they're continously running full bore; Android will generally manage them effectively and efficiently in this state from what I've observed. I deal with power hogs on a case by case basis without power management.
Turning off battery background use in individual apps does not alter the bucket state, at least on my devices.
Play with it... see how it behaves.

Thank you. In my case, OOS doesn't put all apps into the "ACTIVE" bucket. It has some sort of algorithm for deciding between the various states, and different apps appear in different buckets.
That's what the docs about Android's App Standby Buckets say is supposed to happen, and these docs also state that each OS can manage the decisions differently about which apps to put into which buckets, and when to do so.
These docs also state that an app in the "ACTIVE" bucket is supposed to behave as if it's in the foreground, which means that it has normal network priority. Samsung might override this behavior of "ACTIVE" apps, but if so, it would be a deviation from the specs.
I am already playing around with this on my device. I'm just not sure whether an app will stay "ACTIVE" forever after I do the following ...
Code:
am set-standby-bucket package.name active
... or whether at some point after I issue that command, the OS will take over. Eventually I'll figure it out. I'm just asking here in this OnePlus forum in case anyone who is familiar with the inner workings of OnePlus devices and OOS already knows the answer.

I read the whole Google bucket explanation. In the end I went with what works best real world.
Lol, I played with this a lot a while back.
Google will keep improving something until they screw it up.
After looking around on the web I think you may have similar power management apps on that device ie battery optimization. There could be more on drop down menus as well.
I wouldn't alter the bucket state with abd. If it's already set as active it's probably the optimized already. I use standby apps just to double check that power management isn't active as I've seen first hand the mess it can cause.

I understand, but mine is a special case.
The OnePlus devices and their OOS operating system are particularly bad concerning push-notifications. They over-do the Doze-related, battery-saving procedures so much that many push-notifications don't even get delivered to apps at all until the app is opened up in the foreground, which could be many minutes or even hours after the notification was originally sent.
Turning battery optimzation off for those apps has no effect. Nor do any of the many different Doze profiles that I have tried. And "whitelisting" the apps is simply what happens when battery optimization is turned off, and it therefore has no effect.
I have to put those apps into the "ACTIVE" bucket, and only then do they reliably receive those otherwise highly delayed push-notifications at the time that they are sent.
I have spent a lot of time trying to correct this problem, and I only came up with two solutions: (1) Use Tasker to periodically open those apps in the foreground for a few seconds, so they can repeatedly get caught up with any pending, undelivered push-notifications; or (2) put the apps in question into the "ACTIVE" bucket.
Obviously, the second alternative is less intrusive to my everyday use of my device.
I have not experienced any negative consequences of putting those apps into the "ACTIVE" bucket.

Question GOS disabled = phone on fire?

I'm on unlocked U1 firmware AVC8 Snapdragon and I've had Game Optimizing Service manually disabled for a while now using Alliance Shield X.
COD Mobile has been running great since there's no throttling and I never get any frame drops, which was not the case when GOS was enabled, even with the alternative performance management on or off, or any type of configuration from Game Booster Plus, so I got rid of it all.
However, with the newest COD update, it feels like my phone is getting dangerously hot when only playing for about 10 minutes.
Are there any tricks or tips to reduce this? I don't want to damage my battery or phone from overheating.
I currently use Thermal Guardian but I don't notice a difference with the temperature, still gets super hot no matter what.
What settings are you guys using to run highly demanding games?
Do you have better luck with GOS enabled or disabled?
I will say the game was running just as smooth and temperatures were actually normal when I was on AVA6 before the March update, with GOS disabled.
I'm considering flashing back to AVA6 so my phone doesn't turn into Portgas D. Ace.
Any thoughts would be great, thanks.
Running like that is extremely hard on the battery, it could significantly decrease it's lifespan. The possibility of thermal damage to the mobo is also increased. Remember flash memory doesn't like high temperatures as far as memory retention goes.
Find the apps responsible and tone them down. It likely could be junk running in the background.
Clear system cache.
Disable global power management.
Disable cloud junk... yeah Google backup and Google Firebase too.
Try temporarily disabling Google play Services.
Rule #1 - if the firmware is running fast, stable (and cool)... let it be. Updates can and do break things. Once I have a phone optimized I don't update it. Security is not an issue, but chasing your own tail after an update/upgrade is an issue and it can be quit time consuming.

Yeah that's what I'm worried about, it definitely doesn't feel safe to continue playing when it gets that hot. I track my apps battery drainage pretty good with Accubattery and everything is normal, I get great battery life no complaint there, it's just the overheat. I set background process limit to 0 from developer setting before I start playing.
How do I disable global power management?
I disable useless stuff and don't let much run in the background so I doubt it's anything like that. I also clear cache partition regularly.
My RAM Plus is set to 1GB and my Processing speed is set Optimized for less heat. I'm not sure what other settings I could tinker with to reduce heat.
If it's running hot it's using battery, lots of it.
I'm running on Pie so no idea about Ram plus, but with 12gb of ram I don't even think about it other than curiosity. Try disabling it.
The power management is found in Device Care.
Lol, it never worked right, why should it now?
Rather handle power hogs on a case by case basis. Trial and error. Don't go too nuts disabling apks. Many apks just sit there and do nothing unless needed. Dozen of small Samsung system apps, be careful with them; dependencies. That may be part of what's going on.
To verify power management's status...
Developer options>standby apps If all buckets are active then global power management is not running. If you can reset the bucket state it's enable. It will cause erratic behaviors. Power management and the bucket crap is a Google brain child. Maybe it's junk, maybe Samsung didn't integrat it right, whatever... it's trouble. Androids will run fine without it.
Only fast charging should be toggle on if you want it. Changing limit background usage in individual app doesn't effect the bucket state and is ok to do if needed.

In the Google account settings in Android Settings, near or at the bottom. Go through all the Google settings.
Also disable carrier, Samsung, Google and 3rd party app feedfack.
those are already disabled for me, yet firebase still kicks in.
i see it clearly in google play services beta dev options , time and info of what is shared. scary stuff
i thought there is some setting inside myaccount on google that needs attention
btw. whatsapp and telegram works without playservices?

Not sure why Firebase is running if disabled. Gookill is a mess... may have something to do with another running Google app like Backup Transport which I also disable.
Get the social media apps off the device. Security risks and really nothing but trouble.
If the site isn't fully functional through the browser only, ditch it.
To get that device to tone down is going to take some effort... and maybe some sacrifices.
it might have something to do with the fact that i logged other android devices on this account or buggy firmware
took out backup transport as well
galaxy s22 is quite a mess so far no deep sleep on wifi, 2-3%/h gms
got better standby on 5 years phones with exactly the same apps/account , without even trying
or maybe nearby device wifi/bt scanning, findmyphone and firebase settings might reset on clearing data/cache for google play services ?

I always keep wifi disabled. For me it's a huge security risk and I have an unlimited data plan.
Unless I need to get Gmail, Google Play Services is always off. Playstore runs in the background too more so if Google play Services is running.
It took me a while to tone down my N10+, it was a hot running hog. Hard to believe it's the same device/firmware. Setting up my new one was a snap... lessons learned.
i will wait for 1-2 updates from this thing, if nothing works i guess its time to root the main phone again after more than 5 years

You're going to have to optimize it. Updates may just make it more complicated to optimize... hard to say. I don't update my N10+'s.
A lot of downsides to rooting Samsung's especially if under warranty. The risk of an expensive brick is not appealing to me and Snapdragon's are notoriously hard to root.
They run very well once optimized but it can be challenging and time consuming.
A package disabler is a good tool for this but not sure if it works on Android 12. It makes it a lot easier, faster and is more flexible than adb edits.
It's very useful for troubleshooting on the fly.
you think there is a way to optimize this to perform similar to my pixel 2 xl ?
smaller and older battery , bigger display resolution, 6 days standby with the same google account, sim card, and software on it.
no matter how many bloat I remove from it. its just not there
I will try disabling gms to see how it performs, but i kind of need it for some of the apps.

I have about 75 apks blocked and 5 more I toggle on/off if needed.
Disable only apps that need to be disabled especially any Samsung system apps. Many only run when needed and otherwise just sit there doing nothing. Which brings me to dependencies; disabling an app or service can have unintended consequences and be hard to track down. Samsung's have many features and are very customizable, most of those apks reflect and help do that. Lol, don't turn it into a Pixel.
Play Services is a true pain. PD stopped listing it so can't use the widget now to toggle it on/off.
I open settings>apps and punch "play" the search bar to take me to it to turn it off. Note: if Find my Device is set as system Administrator it needs to be deactivated otherwise the Google play Services disable is greyed out.
If you can find a firewall that logs with Android 11/12 it be a useful tool. I use Karma Firewall but it's logging feature only works with Pie. It will still block internet access by apps but you can easily see what's accessing the internet and when. Many don't need access all the time and shouldn't have it. Blocking also prevents forced updates and once a paid app like Accubattery is activated you can hide it from their server. Otherwise if Playstore is disabled it will lose its pro version status. The Google family of apps are wretched power hungry big sisters... they need serious toning down.
Lol, my work arounds are rather extensive and evolved over time. Some require manual input from me and although I don't really think about it much now... it wasn't always this way
However a side benefit is it helps you to develop your troubleshooting skills and tools for doing it. This is also why I don't update... more trouble than it's worth.
looks like a lot of work for the results samsung should've put on from the start
it would've been a lot more sales for them if every process ran was optional for each user to decide what he wants from their 'features'
all of them combined -> dead phone
ps. google play services needs any reboot if i disable/enable it ?

Each user and configuration is different. It's not a boring Apple. That said Samsung's been dropping the ball since the Note 10+, that's been their zenith to date.
Google Android dived down the Apple rabbit hole starting with Android 10, its a mess that gets worse the higher the version. So secure that you can't use it effectively.
Playstore and apps dependent on an active handshake from Playwhore will need a reboot, otherwise no. I reboot every couple days, but rarely use Playstore
Once I initialize the Playstore dependent apps, I firewall block them to keep them locked to their pro versions. Bite me Playstore...
Gmail doesn't care. Of course it's won't autosync but I really don't care about that. I don't want Gookill holding my hand, screw them and their hype.

Android's scoped storage remains a never ending tale of disaster. Google's long standing nose up attitude of expandable storage in favor of their cloud crap only makes matters worse.
Samsung and Google are inept malakas. You don't compete with Apple by mirroring Apple's mistakes...
