Please help chosing a phone that dont make face droopy and longer - General Questions and Answers

Hi
Can you please recommend me a phone that wont distort my face a lot and wont make It look long and droopy?
I know all phones have some face distortion of the front camera, but my last 2 phones Xiaomi Redmi 7 and Huawei P9 Lite Make a huge distortion and deform the face. They make the face very long and like if I have a square jaw and droopy lower face jowls. I Am 21 Years old so i don't Have any jowls or droopy face in real life, I even visited a plastic surgeon who told me my face looks fine, and it is phone distortion. I hace try my front camera on my parents and friends and it distort and deform their faces too.
The distortion is very big, not just a Little bit, and it is happening on videos with the front camera as well.
I have not been able to upload pictures to my Instagram due this problem for the Last 2 Years.
I want to change my phone, but I dont want this problem happening again, and I dont know which phone should I buy., I want a phone that take normal pictures, so I can use them in social media.
The only feature I care about the phone I want to buy is that it does not deform the face extremely, and it does not elongate it, I dont care about any other feature.
I hope someone can advice me, thanks in advance.

Change the shot angle and/or distance.
Cams don't make as much of a difference as the shooter does...

Thanks , I have try with all shot angles and distances ( desperate not to be able to upload a single picture on Instagram, so I spent many hours taking pictures from all angles and distances) , and it does not help, even with a selfie stick it make the head and the face super long and skinny ( both Xiaomi and huawei phones), the face look more like an ugly cartoon than like a normal girl. I am sure it is a lens problem, as I never had that problem with any of my previous phones. That is why I want to buy a new one. The faces of instagram influencers are not elongated or deformed, so there must be some brand phones that dont cause that problem. Even if I try an Instagram vídeo with ig filter the face look distorted.

Absolute correct: It's never the camera what malfunctions, but depending on the lighting or distance from the camera, one looks different.
It is due to the inability of OP to photograph properly.
OP should use the rear camera, move away from the camera and zoom in 2x-3x, then the elongated face will disappear.

That is interesting, but i need a phone that I can use the front camera, as I want to use real time filters and real time digiital make up while I do videos, and see which poses and facial expresions am I doing before taking my pictures, I dont want to take pictures with the rear camera, and mostly any girl use rear one when taking pictures and videos for social media, and my other previous phone did not have this problem, so I am sure some phone brands dont distort the face as much as my Xiaomi and Huawei. I had a Sony Xperia before that took nice pictures with the front camera.
I will try moving the camera away and zoom it, but still want a new phone that dont distort so much.
Thanks

They are simply mirrored images.
However the photo image is incorrect as it should be a mirror image as well
Be then they are all photos...

When you take a photo of yourself using some ( but not all ) apps or the front-facing camera on a phone, the resulting image captures your face as others see it: it's not the image you see when you look into a mirror.
That's why so many people are horrified when they see photos of themselves.

This is not the case of my phone problem, as I have had tons of mobiles sinceramente I was 10 years old, and I am used to see myself in pictures. I am not comparing myself with the mirror image!!!! I look fine on my friends phones and in my previous phones, my mom has the same phone than me and have the same problem, she takes pictures fron my aunty phone to be able to upload them.
I am not asking how to fix the phones cámaras, I am just asking which brand and model dont have this problem to buy it, the distorsión on my phones is not just a little bit like the pictures you uploaded, it is a huge distortion, whhen my friends try my phones it distort their face big time too .
Any young girl and many middle aged women spend really a lot of time taking selfies, so we all know how we normally look in phones. It is not my first phone or the first time I take a front camera picture as to freak out cos I look different than the mirror.
I upload a picture ,( not me, but a guy who wortte an article about this subject) but an example of my problem.
My face in other phones look maybe like the 2nd picture, on my phone it looks completely distorted ( not a bit) like the Last picture of the guy. And uy look like that fron far away too. not only in me, buy anyone using my phone look deformed in the picture or video.
I just want a phone that the lens is not so screw up that deform the face completely.

I would love to delete my post as obviously I am not going to get any help, and my post seen to attract people who like to bully and are very rude.

Good morning, XDA universe! Allow me to commence the day with a radio... hmmm... Moderator Announcement!
Within less than 12 hours after the last thread cleaning by my esteemed team mate @mrjuniork I had to clean it again! And believe me, enough is enough!
Members, and it doesn't matter if mature, long-time or really new ones, who post a question do that because THEY have a quite often serious problem that might be none for others or could be neglected in other member's views.
But we're happy that new people permanently find their way to XDA in order to ask their questions and to seek support here. We do encourage this!
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do so. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably quite a few people with less experience than you, who could benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.

If you can't or don't want to follow above guidance just move on without posting. But if you post do it without making jokes of the enquirer or by belittling somebody. Be aware that both can be read as disrespect towards a XDA member and might lead to consequences to an account.

@Sonia2001 A very warm welcome to XDA; I do hope that you always get the support and assistance you require although you obviously currently have a different impression. Please consider to have a look at some other threads in this forum or all the other Q&A fora and see that usually the expectations of the authors are met. I'm convinced this will eventually also the case for your current one but also for all your future threads.
I'm very and honestly sorry to read your decision especially after you just joined yesterday. I'd really appreciate if you reconsider your decision. It's indeed as you stated you can't delete your account; even a moderator can't do. It always requires an administrator for that. Severe lens flare on camera - prob. hardware related

On my small Pixel (black 128GB edition) I get severe lens flares in situations, that were never a problem for any smartphone before.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfz8YmHmeJ4 The video here illustrates the issue pretty well, several very well known people on YouTube + Twitter have encountered the exact same problem, including @MKBHD, @DetroitBORG and @superscientific !
I'd like to know if there are devices out there that don't have this problem. You won't see it in all lighting situations, but it's very pronounced in some - where it shouldn't be.
I have.noticed this today on my camera I attached a photo the halo or flair can be seen at the bottom the pale grey around the bottom left and right. Like you say, it's only in certain light conditions and certain angles. Must be the glass that surrounds the lense.
Looks like the the phone has been rushed out and not tested properly.
Two more photos
This is definitely a design floor as happens if the camera is on its sides, upside down and normal. Really didn't expect this from such a highly priced phone.
Some more photos from me:
I'm talking to support via the built in support. I'll let you know what they say.
I'm taking mine back to the carrier store in an hour. No way I'm going to accept this.
This is happening to me as well. Definitely a deal breaker, unless covering the glass with a case fixes the problem. It's a shame, because the camera blows everything else out of the water.
Been in contact with EE and they have said my handset is defective so they are sending me a new one tomorrow. Excellend support from them, Thought it would have been a pain in the arse

Well be prepared for disappointment. My phone has it too. I guarantee every Pixel does. Probably because of the subtle curve on the rear glass.

Yeah I'm not going to hold my breath, but the guy who done the video in the first post had two pixels and only one of them done.this. I'll just keep returning them until I get one that works
Google said they didn't know about this but they have forwarded the link to this thread and the YouTube video so they can investigate further.

Do you really believe they are going to eliminate the halo with that approach?
No way. It's a design flaw. The question is how does that digital picture site
give this phone such a high rating and they never saw this in any of their pictures?
This just doesn't add up. I am awaiting the XL to come back in stock to order
but this is a deal breaker for me unless this is a defect on a few phones.

DxOMark actually did mention the lens flare/halo if you read the entire review... they just call it something more technical.
Yes, I fully believe they will be able to correct for this issue, at least SOMEWHAT, in software. I think the question will be whether or not they can actually preserve detail in the area where the flare is occurring. Google has pulled off some amazing feats with this camera just because of its software... they're not going to claim to do something they can't do.

According to Google, yes. The lens assembly is subject to very tight manufacturing tolerances. Every Pixel is going to have this issue.
Got my new phone, and as stated above I still have the flair so I'm really.imterested into what Google can actually do. I'm off to the park with my dog layer so I'll take lots of photos and upload them here if they have any flare issues.
Don't accept this. Take it back to your point of sale. Get another phone. I am so ****ing done with this.
"We completely, retardedly screwed the entire design of our phone and will now make you use a certain camera mode to mitigate (not resolve) the issue in software"
None of you should accept this.
Out of maybe 100 photos I have taken with this phone, you can maybe see it in like 3-4 photos. Only really happens on my end if I am shooting directly into a light source which most photos are pointing away from a light source. It's not like every photo comes out like this.
I am very very happy with this phone and the camera.

XZP camera distortion photos

I followed this camera distortion issue since XZS , seems sony would like to cover this up. The topic in sony forum has been deleted which have all feedback photo from different countries users.
I was hoping they could fix the problem, But since they deleted the post. I think there must be a hardware problem can not fix. Sadly I'm going to return the phone.
The XZP and XZS user deserve to know. This are the photos taken by XZP owners from all over the world, form the dead post there , Hope that they don't mind I repost.

yeah, the post asking for reason of deletion also has been deleted....
Photos of my ASUS X75VC keyboard taken with my 3 xperia devices. Xperia XZ Premium, Z3 COMPACT, Go
All photos taken with flash, relatively same distance from keyboard. All photos were taken in the xperia camera app, auto mode, in 17, 8 and 3 MP respectively.
Note: I made a mistake in the imgur description, the photo was taken in 17MP not 13 on the XZP.
Note 2: Notice the Z3C has a minor distortion as well, I never heard anyone talk about that. The Go doesn't seem to have distortion to my eyes. And the XZP definitely has distortion.
All wide angle phone cameras have it.
That's an LG G3.
I believe it's to counter the extra barrel distortion these lenses would have

No , this is not a barrel distortion , this is a pincushion distortion. which is only super cheap old model lens will have.
Should not be on a $ 800 phone, also XZP's pincushion distortion it's most extreme one in thr world.
Also dose iphone and samsung and of other brand have this issue ? sure NO !
see the compare photos
this pic show you why the XZP has the most extreme one pincushion distortion
"it's to COUNTER barrel distortion" you missed that word.
You also realise, that the wavy lines are not the reason for stretching at the sides of wide angle lenses?
I mean you're aware of that fact?

the fact is on the picture I show you which align the left and bottom as parallel as possible then align the top and right ,the best result can get.
the fact is iphone and samsung and other brand don't have this kind of bad level distortion.
Yes, but they do.
LG G6 is the latest competitor that has it
Even the iPhone 7 to some degree.
And all Sony since Z5, and not one person so far has used it to blame it on what is simply not understanding what a wide angle lens will do to close subjects at the full width if the image. It will distort them to bits.
You wanna bang the drum that the stretched heads or elongated proportions at the top or bottom of a portrait shot image is this, then you'll be very disappointed if Sony do fix the waves, because that won't change the physics of wide angled photography.
But don't take my word for it, Google it, find hundreds if not thousands of discussions regarding the distortion on subjects at the sides of wide angle photos.
Because this kind of stretching is 100% normal

OH ,I'm sorry.
We are talking about two completely different issues here,You do not know what I'm talking about.
What you said here we already knew it since primary school.
Please do not mislead consumers that the "waves" have nothing to do with the SPUER LEVEL distortion from XZP, which much more serious than other phones. there is a important connection. The more complex "waves" you got will increase more perspective distortion which increase more stretched heads or elongated proportions ,the waves exactly tell you XZP camera will distortion the subjects not only at the sides ,also spread to so close the center which is not the acceptable range ,did not like iphone or samsung they deal distortion in a acceptable range.Yes of course I know they have wide angle distortion ,like I said we are talk about range.
Just curious are you the Moderator "viridis" in sonymobile forum who deleted the XZP distortion thread before? you too have the exactly the same laptop and always compare the issue with some super old cheap phone model (no offense). we are talking about a $800 flagship price model here please.
If yes, please stop wash for sony mobile. like someone says you are working so hard to cooling down the issue.
just tell your boss do something like samsung fix the same problem quickly, see below , and if no, see it anyway.
samsung start selling their S7&S7e model in March last year, some users feedback camera with distortion issue to the samsung official forum, which is the pincushion distortion just like XZP ,but not bad as XZP level. And samsung developer wrote quick reply which said they will study to fix the problem ,After three weeks the S7&S7E received a new FW upgrade which come with a new camera options SHAPE CORRECTION. Yes,when you focusing still can see the distortion on screen, but saved photo has been corrected close to perfect.

1. I never deleted any thread, I actually spent hours fixing someone else's cockup, but feel free to continue banging that drum too, it's not like you've let facts get in the way so far.
2. I know how much it cost, I bought one or did you forget that?

4. I'm attempting to "cool it down" because the images you posted in all your threads so far, are very avoidable by following basic photography guides.
But anyway, your minds made up and it's a waste of time to continue to talk to you, but please stop making out that Sony actually tried to cover something up that they have had on their phones for a looooong time.

You are so adorable , I've started to like you .since I told you three days ago that I did not want to waste time on you in sony mobile forum.
how about give us a look at your portrait, full body, half of the body from XZP ,IPhone5,6,S8,S7 all in the same composition to show us how you think your basic photography guides is ? NO I'm sure you will not ,you don't want to let us to see the different. And you will not to show the forcing enlarged poor lonely single beer cans too ,which you already hide it from sony mobile forum, for fear that someone else sees the thin waist distortion in the middle of the can ,the samsung and iphone won't make it this ugly.
Well the three photos on the previous page were a galaxy S6, but in portrait, will an iPhone 6s do?
I tried to match the kind of angles seen in op and bear in mind, the 6s doesn't have the same wide angle as Xperia.
Maybe you can post some from wide angle lenses that show non stretching at the angles shown in your posts?

I'm sorry ,I hate to say that:
Finally know that you are not playing fool, your understanding ability seems to really have serious problems!
like I said you will not show the XZP photo , you just afraid to show the compare results. OK ,that's fine. Cause your second picture already explained everything ,we can see you push really hard to make the head on the corner to get distortion this light level ,and you can see all my uploaded photo the head are close to the center point, none of them is so close to the corner it's already overweight level distortion. We can not use a XZP take portrait always put the head in the precise center point to avoid distortion ,and even if we do so ,the body will distort also overweight level as you can see in my uploaded photo. Also S7 & S8 will deal the distortion much better than S6, since they have a distortion correction options which they do really listen to consumer.
good luck and what a nice beautiful girl anyway.(The yellow line is transparent)
I think entire XZP line is affected, Guess like Samsung did with their S7 line up, they should fix this issue with a software update. Like feskey posted S7e photos, Sony has a similar issue, So I assume it can be fixed.
I have this disortion issue also on my Xperia XZ (normal - not premium).
Very annoying, that the Sony manager said, that this is normal. So I dont expect an update.
On my Samsung S7 I got an update with Shape Correction which fixed this. I think its a Post-Processing Algorithm.
Yes that wavy it's definitely the reason for stretching , not only ad the sides it is almost stretching the center point.
see this sony official dancing woman's photos (above photo)from XZP you can find in your phone,The distortion has been already there very serious, just that wall have bad workmanship make you think it is.Do a anti color you will see the serious distortion just absolutely same as XZP distortion map below .
look at the merger photo here you will see the coincide curve line. You know what is the most coincidence part that this little woman's head and body just inside the blue box area where have less distortion.\.XZP review online they all took photo from long distant landscape,no close-range or people so we can see the issue very coincidental .S PHONE and IPHONE review usually have close range shoot and close portrait.
See this official photos.Whether use any angle to shoot these light bulbs should be regular spherical, rgiht ?! But the one closest to the yellow safe area has been distort absolutely serious already.I'm not saying that wide angle don't have distortion, But this level ..........!This is definitely not a photographer and perspective problem. Also the "curve line" certainly affected distortion.
Now the light bulb photo and map explained why my photo will be seriously deformed ,and also explained that no matter what angle and composition I try I can't get one normal photo .Explained that why I use a 4:3 scale will have even more elongate head, also more and more in single person photo like below. (borrow from other user) Exactly same issue like my traveler's photos, which they Complained about.
This is not an ordinary perspective and wide-angle problem or what ever industry standards is.More like a failed lens design ,what is the point to use the lens like that ? Mobile phone camera should be to allow users to take pictures more easily than professional camera. Most users will not use the phone to shoot master style landscape photos. Most of them are normal shooting for ordinary live photo. If this phone designed for some landscape and flowers which are random shape please put it in the ad and packaging. Also even the landscape you can see the distortion easily than other phone.
My old note5 and the new S8 I tried ,Safe area it is roughly in green box see above photo.
It's more clear now.
Which phone will distort the portrait and object like this range? Only sony xzp.
Samsung can fix it ,wht not sony?Sony need fix it ASAP.
Rubbish lens.

If yes, please stop wash for sony mobile. like someone says you are working so hard to cooling down the issue.
just tell your boss do something like samsung fix the same problem quickly, see below , and if no, see it anyway."
1. I never deleted any thread, I actually spent hours fixing someone else's cockup, but feel free to continue banging that drum too, it's not like you've let facts get in the way so far.
2. I know how much it cost, I bought one or did you forget that?
3. Why would my boss care, I don't see what an engineer has to do with an online mobile phone forum?

WOW man, just WOW. Whatever you say is not cool. Not cool at all man.
XZP has distortion very close to center which is very different than a typical wide angle lens distortion that shows up around the edges of the photo but not very close to the center. Not to brag, just to give you perspective that i know DSLR sh**t, i own few canon full frame cameras and some nice canon L lens. Have been in photo world for a while.
Attached is mine example. Not cool at all.
I has a s6 before buying XZP, no problem at all of take pictures for family members. Now I was shocked by XZP,portrait photos are all distorted.

Is it only me - or is the Sony XZ Permium becoming a joke?

Hey there,
see, I'm not really the impatient kind of guy, I have lived through all the LG G4 issues, I had my deviced repaired three times. People make mistakes, so do major companies.
But one thing I really don't fancy is the feeling of being mocked. Right now, I'm really considering returning my XZP and kissing Sony good bye for good.
Here's why:
My smartphone has some random weird bugs:
- the front facing speaks just switch off randomly until restart
- the screen sometimes flickers until I turn adaptive illumination off and on again
- did anyone here check only reviews? Most hail the camera for its impressive quality. What quality!? My old G4 beats the XZP under all conditions, the G2 is at least very very close - and it's now four years old.
- and the distortion issue.
I mentioned a few things on the Sony forum and for some weird reason all of these threads just disappear into thin air. When contacting the Sony support, they'd advise me to do a software reset (MoFo please!).
Is this a bad joke? Is that how Sony wants to get back in the game of top-notch smartphones? I'm beginning to understand all the promos for those who preordered - they knew what they had coming.
Really, it's kind of hard to get me pi**ed but I'm kinda pi**ed.

Yea, sure. But that is not what I meant. It's not about returning and having it repaired (what btw will not happen if they don't even acknowledge the issue), it's about how they deal with that. I mean, especially talking of the distortion issue - that is not just me. That is most likely with all devices or at least a very very big share. How come they just ignore that? LG or even Apple, they are at least straight when they make mistakes.

And here I just picked up two Premiums haha. Sorry that you're unhappy.
I don't think Sony is ignoring anything. But it is not even fully released yet around the world. I am sure they are aware of the issues and "hopefully" will come up with a patch to remedy all the big issues. As for your particular phone you may have received a lemon and simply need to replace it. I can appreciate the major hassle of doing such a thing but it is an unfortunate reality in today's world. I say all this as an owner of the black version of the xz premium and I love it. I am not having the major issues that some are having. Got it from the UK.
Most definitely a defective unit. Speakers turning off until restart? Not gonna have any of that lol. RETURN FOR ANOTHER UNIT IF POSSIBLE!
My own case is different, I feel like I've got the best device for me at the moment.
Sent from my G8141 using Tapatalk
pre-ordered mine today and will be in hand Sunday morning, hopefully this batch of us units are better and don't face any of these issues. I'll exchange till I'm happy or get refunded. I seem to get lucky with my Sony products so crossing fingers.
I'm just going to leave this here...
This is a link to a post I made on Sony's forum a while ago. Personally I think you have a faulty unit but you never know, maybe the history likes to repeat itself?

Well you definitely are suffering from the distortion issue, all XZP phones have it. Open up a grid pattern on your PC screen or take a picture of a brick wall. You will definitely notice a pincushion deformation at the edges of the picture.

For god's sake, who would take picture of perfectly square grid on a daily basis?
This is just like those idiots who bought a thousand dollars wide angle DSLR lens and complain about distortion by shooting only brick walls all day.
Wide angle has distortion! It is tough to get rid of it physically in the glass already for full size camera, let alone getting rid of it in a lens the size of a pea!
If the lens on the phone can be that perfect, you will be paying well over $1000 for the phone itself!
If camera is all you care, go get Huawei's P9/P10!
To OP, seriously, replace your phone, many users aren't having same issues as you do meaning yours is faulty!
It is much more realistic to physically go replace it than to whine about it online! Finding sympathy in virtual world will get you no where, this goes the same for all other brands!
Let Sony gets your faulty unit to examine, and to prevent same thing from happening in future phones is much more realistic than raising waves online with all sorts of words.

People don't do doesn't mean issue is gone. Xperia Z3 compact has wide angle lens too, it doesn't have such significant distortion. Galaxy S7 also has large FOV lens, but their developer gave an auto-correction option. We payed almost same price, and Sony said its camera is perfect in ad.s
what's more, wide angle lens won't take photos like this, it's the damn lens correction software fault
Sony just manage to balance its cheque book in the mobile field. Honestly, allow them time to cure it, Sony deserve to stay.
All I wanna point out is that, it is not really big issue unless you shoot picture of computer mon, grid or brick wall all day. And many people mixed the distortion with typical wide angle lens perspective distortion, which created more chaos than necessary.
Many people still shooting great picture of people and scenary, so stop worrying so much. Have fun with the phone, when times come the firmware upgrade, we will get even better grid/brick wall pictures.

Sony saving its mony in a wrong way. They deliver the best cmos, but do less work on software. Photos still look painted, and without OIS (EIS only in Video mode), it is hard to take a perfect photo at night

Well, true, they need more effort on software side. Again, they are in the right step with the new managment focusing on collaboration between departments, time will tell how much better they will do. Previously they don't collaborate.

Disable Selfie Camera?

Is there a way to disable Selfie [Front Facing] Camera because the amount of times I swipe to get to Pro or Panorama and end up in Selfie mode is getting beyond ridiculous!
As a professional Photographer there are times we need to get the Camera out in an instant, else to miss that all important shot.
I find it utterly stupid the way you swipe is so closely similar to either brings you from Auto to Pro or bring up Selfie mode.
It is almost equally frustrating to try and focus a subject in Auto Camera only to toggle Brightness slider, but that's another subject…

Wouldn't you have dedicated tools for whatever job you might be at? Like, if you're anticipating needing to capture important images depending on where you are wouldn't you have your dedicated camera on you and not be relying on a smartphone camera?
Personally, I see our phones as phones first, media players second and cameras third. Compact advanced P&S are always better than what our phone's camera can do, anyway. At least that's just my opinion. They also tend to offer crazy long optical zooms, as well.
Anyway, looking through the settings myself, I don't see any option to do this. At least not natively. There's always third party camera apps like Open Camera than you can try out and see if that helps. Double-tapping the power button to fire up the camera app hasn't been fast enough? Or is it just an issue of what your last camera setting might have been that's causing the real issue?

LoL  some ppl just have to go on like that instead of just saying nothing if they can't help.
Maybe something in ADB shell can help.
I don't think you can turn it off. You may have to install another camera app and use it with your phone rather than using the default camera.

I stumbled across this site also looking to disable selfie mode. I DESPISE it and it's always getting in my way. To the idiots responding negatively, those are the douche bags taking pictures of themselves.
Re: to the guy condescendingly questioning why somebody would not use an actual dedicated camera. You may not one depending on what your photograhing. Often times you can get equally good results with lighting and a newer model cell phone in pro-mode. I personally have a decent DSLR and always use my phone out of pure convenience. Though with that said, if i was a photographer working with clients, i would never show up with only a cell phone.
If some Samsung suits ever read this, selfie mode sucks and is one of the most ridiculous and annoying features i have ever seen on a phone.
I fully agree that this is an annoyance, along with the brightness slider getting in the way when attempting to focus in that area of the screen. And the flash popout menu should simply be a toggle button in my view.
That said, there may be a couple of uses for these sticks that some people use to facilitate their grandstanding. I better not get into that, though.

in short, yes. you can disable the FFC, but it wont help. Matter of fact itll probably mess everything up worse than you think. In order to disable it, youd have to mess with the kernel, as there is no toggle for the FFC. In addition, the app itself will always look for the FFC and offer you its respective options from within the app such as it being in the list of camera modes, which sounds like your ACTUAL problem. So, the long answer is no, not really. Not with the stock camera app anyways

Have you ever worked with a DSLR? unless you already have it out and ready, there is no capturing of the moment with those. Point and shoots too. They have to boot every time you turn them on which takes time and causes people to miss the shot they wanted.

i cant begin to describe how incorrect this is. this is the internet, if you ask a question on it, youll perhaps get a barrage of answers, some of them you might find useful, others not, but you dont get to decide what is a debate and what isnt. If youre not a moderator of this forum and no wrongdoings have occurred, the "debate" will be allowed.
btw, to answer your question, reassign the bixby button to launch the camera. My S9 launches the camera on bixby press and is ready to take a picture in a second

Yup. Sure have. Several different kinds. Unless you already have anything out and ready, smartphone, DSLR, P&S, Walgreens disposable camera, there is no capturing of the moment (if it's something faster than you getting the cam ready).
So, yes. I have and it's not hard. Also, as you may already know, there's a wide range of quality between different cameras and with that various levels of speeds with their capturing abilities. Somehow, some cameras find a way to capture fast moments. I know, right? It's crazy. Like I said before, it depends on you. How you prepare. What you are doing. Where you are going. Event? You should be prepared? Random occurrence? Smartphone. I mean, it seems easy enough to me.
But that's just me, I guess.

you spoke of hardware in that post and preparedness in this last one. because theyre the exact same thing. "I know, right? its crazy"
of course it depends on you, thats the point
also, not everyone who owns a DSLR, P&S, film cam etc etc etc has them out while a moment you want to get a pic of occurs, what do you reach for? the moment is obviously not going to last long and you have your phone and a DSLR. You just had your DSLR out and taking pics of far away buildings, so you have a 70/200 mm lens on it and the exposure is long for the same reason. Oh, forgot to mention that the thing youre wanting to take a pic of is 15 ft from you and moving. Now what? Your phone is still just a phone? and i should have been "prepared" for this somehow?
oh oh oh, almost forgot. I love how you say "personally, i see our phones as blah blah" Nobody asked you what your opinion on how to use their phone. Best part is how you got defensive after having the durr pointed out on your first post in this thread.

might be best putting a piece of tape over the aperture. youll likely need root to do this, but by now im betting that someone made a magisk module to disable the cameras. If youre still wanting to do this, id look at magisk nowadays. in yesteryear, it was a very specific thing, but nowadays i bet something thatll get ya where you need to be is out there. i just dont mess with root enough anymore to be knowledgeable about it.

I discovered this problem whenever I try to close the camera app by swiping up--forgetting that the phone has different gestures than my old phone. I'm not sure why there is such an urgent need for a selfie, such that it has it's own gesture. Many people put tape over the selfie camera, so being able to disable it makes more sense than giving it its own gesture.
BTW, not to fan the flames, but the phone makers go through a lot of effort to market their phone cameras as high enough quality to be used by pros, so I'm not sure what prompted 'his' lecture about when to use a phone camera and when not to use a phone camera.

Is the camera worth it?

I really love the Oneplus 6, top to bottom, don't care the missing of the stereo speaker or the notch (cause OOS seem to deal with it quite good)
The only issue keeps me from buying it is the camera. I have seen a lot of reviews and comments about the camera and they are pretty mixed which confused me.
I need the phone to last for about 3 years or so and I mainly use it when I travel and to takes photos. I heard that there are updates that fix things but still read that there are issues.
Can you guys give me your own opinion about the camera and if I should go for it or move to the Galaxy S8 plus?
P/s: quite sure that I will try to use Gcam instead on both phone, have it on my old phone and it absolutely surprised me cuz the image came out quite nice for such an old phone.
Not a fan of any brands (except Iphone which I don't really like, but I do like Ipad and I don't hate Apple by any means) so if you have other recommendation under $500 then feels free to say, so far I only see these 2 are the best for what my budget can buy.
Thank you for your helps.
It's right there with the best cameras. It beats then in certain shots and they beat it on certain shots in the comparison tests. I still think it might be a hair behind the likes of the s9, pixel 2xl and I think it's better then the iPhone overall. It's close in low light to them, as good if not better in good light and it handled the bright areas better then dinner of this phones in not blowing out the highlights.
I have zero complaints and I'm an enthusiast photographer. Unless I'm doing a wedding or something really important, I have no issues using this camera. It more then does the job. Of course you can get a shot it doesn't handle well, but every PHONE is the same way. None will replace a dslr

Gonna take another look and get the OP 6. My friend has a deal for it with about 100$ off
No, it's not worth it. Theres bad oil painting effect in low light. Pics are very hit and miss, some are great, some are awful and now I have dust under the lens and I have a black spot I can't get rid of on photos. I certainly couldn't recommend it.

Its not bad. On my recent trip to Canada and USA, I packed my Nikon 850. I took over 1200 pictures during my 2 weeks vacation. I might have used my Nikon for less than 75 shots. Convenience of phone camera outweighs the hassle of lugging a complete system. Unless you are taking pictures for a luving, this phone camera will be more than suffice to satisfy your shutterbug needs.
I strongly believe that it's not the camera but eye behind the camera that make or break the picture. If you are little dissatisfied with extremely low light shots, you can enhance in post production. Make sure to keep HDR option on. I had S8+ abd my wife still has S9 and I can tell you from a bormal viewing distance, you could not tell the difference apart. Remember, you can always switch to pro camera mode for better control. Hope this helps. Good luck.

i will not suggest samsung phone if you love to take pic on kid or pet in indoor with (basically any moving object in low light on samsung phone come up blur mess), other than that i agree s8 has a bit better on camera, and you may need to get use to the very slow update on samsung

I do really understand why you bring the links here but seriously I read all of those (except the video one since I'm not fond of that anyway, have like 1 or 2 videos taken with my 2.5 years old phone) and it's really confusing, some said good some said bad (and they do have evidence)
I check on xda (which tbh my trusty place to find user experience) and they are mixed.
I check on youtube with those reviewers I think that are not bs, and it's still mixed.
I check all those reviews on the internet and other forums, and it's still mixed.
I don't usually do these Q&A on XDA (this actually my first) because this is just too hard to decide this time.
Thanks you for your help but it yet solve my confusions.

That's interesting, I use it for my vacations and I love to take scenery shots (and probally a few shot with my friends or selfies but only a little as I don't like to take photos of myself or person in general)
I'm still yet decided if I stick with Samsung software or move to a custom rom since they both have pros and cons (and somehow I find the S8 forum is not really active?)
but I totally love the experience that I saw on the OP 6 so far.
If you have either of the phone or both, I would really love to hear more of your opinion, thank you.

That sounds really interesting, can i have a few of your shots to check out cause really I love the phone just the camera is bugging me.
If I need a phone purely for daily experience then this definitely in my pocket right now
Scenery shots will be best since I will use it mostly for scenery, thank you so much!

That looks absolutely good!
Already contacted my friend for the deal but there is an issue bugging me tho.
Others said that they have some issue with dust in the lens, do you have any idea about this?

I am not sure who and why they are saying about the dust issues. Absolutely no dust issues here. Previously posted shots are the proof. You would have noticed diffraction if there was any dust. To put your mind at ease, spend $2 and buy tempered glass lens protector on Amazon, eBay, or Aliexpress. I dont even use cover or screen protector for my phone (never have used for the last 15 years or so). Rather than worrying about protecting, enjoy by actually using the gadget-my two cents worth advice.

I tend to drop my phone so probably a shockproof case (and be more careful since it's glass) but thank you so much for the advice! :highfive::highfive:
