I followed this camera distortion issue since XZS , seems sony would like to cover this up. The topic in sony forum has been deleted which have all feedback photo from different countries users.
I was hoping they could fix the problem, But since they deleted the post. I think there must be a hardware problem can not fix. Sadly I'm going to return the phone.
The XZP and XZS user deserve to know. This are the photos taken by XZP owners from all over the world, form the dead post there , Hope that they don't mind I repost.

yeah, the post asking for reason of deletion also has been deleted....
Photos of my ASUS X75VC keyboard taken with my 3 xperia devices. Xperia XZ Premium, Z3 COMPACT, Go
All photos taken with flash, relatively same distance from keyboard. All photos were taken in the xperia camera app, auto mode, in 17, 8 and 3 MP respectively.
Note: I made a mistake in the imgur description, the photo was taken in 17MP not 13 on the XZP.
Note 2: Notice the Z3C has a minor distortion as well, I never heard anyone talk about that. The Go doesn't seem to have distortion to my eyes. And the XZP definitely has distortion.
All wide angle phone cameras have it.
That's an LG G3.
I believe it's to counter the extra barrel distortion these lenses would have

No , this is not a barrel distortion , this is a pincushion distortion. which is only super cheap old model lens will have.
Should not be on a $ 800 phone, also XZP's pincushion distortion it's most extreme one in thr world.
Also dose iphone and samsung and of other brand have this issue ? sure NO !
see the compare photos
this pic show you why the XZP has the most extreme one pincushion distortion
"it's to COUNTER barrel distortion" you missed that word.
You also realise, that the wavy lines are not the reason for stretching at the sides of wide angle lenses?
I mean you're aware of that fact?

the fact is on the picture I show you which align the left and bottom as parallel as possible then align the top and right ,the best result can get.
the fact is iphone and samsung and other brand don't have this kind of bad level distortion.
Yes, but they do.
LG G6 is the latest competitor that has it
Even the iPhone 7 to some degree.
And all Sony since Z5, and not one person so far has used it to blame it on what is simply not understanding what a wide angle lens will do to close subjects at the full width if the image. It will distort them to bits.
You wanna bang the drum that the stretched heads or elongated proportions at the top or bottom of a portrait shot image is this, then you'll be very disappointed if Sony do fix the waves, because that won't change the physics of wide angled photography.
But don't take my word for it, Google it, find hundreds if not thousands of discussions regarding the distortion on subjects at the sides of wide angle photos.
Because this kind of stretching is 100% normal

OH ,I'm sorry.
We are talking about two completely different issues here,You do not know what I'm talking about.
What you said here we already knew it since primary school.
Please do not mislead consumers that the "waves" have nothing to do with the SPUER LEVEL distortion from XZP, which much more serious than other phones. there is a important connection. The more complex "waves" you got will increase more perspective distortion which increase more stretched heads or elongated proportions ,the waves exactly tell you XZP camera will distortion the subjects not only at the sides ,also spread to so close the center which is not the acceptable range ,did not like iphone or samsung they deal distortion in a acceptable range.Yes of course I know they have wide angle distortion ,like I said we are talk about range.
Just curious are you the Moderator "viridis" in sonymobile forum who deleted the XZP distortion thread before? you too have the exactly the same laptop and always compare the issue with some super old cheap phone model (no offense). we are talking about a $800 flagship price model here please.
If yes, please stop wash for sony mobile. like someone says you are working so hard to cooling down the issue.
just tell your boss do something like samsung fix the same problem quickly, see below , and if no, see it anyway.
samsung start selling their S7&S7e model in March last year, some users feedback camera with distortion issue to the samsung official forum, which is the pincushion distortion just like XZP ,but not bad as XZP level. And samsung developer wrote quick reply which said they will study to fix the problem ,After three weeks the S7&S7E received a new FW upgrade which come with a new camera options SHAPE CORRECTION. Yes,when you focusing still can see the distortion on screen, but saved photo has been corrected close to perfect.

1. I never deleted any thread, I actually spent hours fixing someone else's cockup, but feel free to continue banging that drum too, it's not like you've let facts get in the way so far.
2. I know how much it cost, I bought one or did you forget that?
3. Why would my boss care, I don't see what an engineer has to do with an online mobile phone forum?
4. I'm attempting to "cool it down" because the images you posted in all your threads so far, are very avoidable by following basic photography guides.
But anyway, your minds made up and it's a waste of time to continue to talk to you, but please stop making out that Sony actually tried to cover something up that they have had on their phones for a looooong time.

You are so adorable , I've started to like you .since I told you three days ago that I did not want to waste time on you in sony mobile forum.
how about give us a look at your portrait, full body, half of the body from XZP ,IPhone5,6,S8,S7 all in the same composition to show us how you think your basic photography guides is ? NO I'm sure you will not ,you don't want to let us to see the different. And you will not to show the forcing enlarged poor lonely single beer cans too ,which you already hide it from sony mobile forum, for fear that someone else sees the thin waist distortion in the middle of the can ,the samsung and iphone won't make it this ugly.
Well the three photos on the previous page were a galaxy S6, but in portrait, will an iPhone 6s do?
I tried to match the kind of angles seen in op and bear in mind, the 6s doesn't have the same wide angle as Xperia.
Maybe you can post some from wide angle lenses that show non stretching at the angles shown in your posts?

I'm sorry ,I hate to say that:
Finally know that you are not playing fool, your understanding ability seems to really have serious problems!
like I said you will not show the XZP photo , you just afraid to show the compare results. OK ,that's fine. Cause your second picture already explained everything ,we can see you push really hard to make the head on the corner to get distortion this light level ,and you can see all my uploaded photo the head are close to the center point, none of them is so close to the corner it's already overweight level distortion. We can not use a XZP take portrait always put the head in the precise center point to avoid distortion ,and even if we do so ,the body will distort also overweight level as you can see in my uploaded photo. Also S7 & S8 will deal the distortion much better than S6, since they have a distortion correction options which they do really listen to consumer.
good luck and what a nice beautiful girl anyway.(The yellow line is transparent)
I think entire XZP line is affected, Guess like Samsung did with their S7 line up, they should fix this issue with a software update. Like feskey posted S7e photos, Sony has a similar issue, So I assume it can be fixed.
I have this disortion issue also on my Xperia XZ (normal - not premium).
Very annoying, that the Sony manager said, that this is normal. So I dont expect an update.
On my Samsung S7 I got an update with Shape Correction which fixed this. I think its a Post-Processing Algorithm.
Yes that wavy it's definitely the reason for stretching , not only ad the sides it is almost stretching the center point.
see this sony official dancing woman's photos (above photo)from XZP you can find in your phone,The distortion has been already there very serious, just that wall have bad workmanship make you think it is.Do a anti color you will see the serious distortion just absolutely same as XZP distortion map below .
look at the merger photo here you will see the coincide curve line. You know what is the most coincidence part that this little woman's head and body just inside the blue box area where have less distortion.\.XZP review online they all took photo from long distant landscape,no close-range or people so we can see the issue very coincidental .S PHONE and IPHONE review usually have close range shoot and close portrait.
See this official photos.Whether use any angle to shoot these light bulbs should be regular spherical, rgiht ?! But the one closest to the yellow safe area has been distort absolutely serious already.I'm not saying that wide angle don't have distortion, But this level ..........!This is definitely not a photographer and perspective problem. Also the "curve line" certainly affected distortion.
Now the light bulb photo and map explained why my photo will be seriously deformed ,and also explained that no matter what angle and composition I try I can't get one normal photo .Explained that why I use a 4:3 scale will have even more elongate head, also more and more in single person photo like below. (borrow from other user) Exactly same issue like my traveler's photos, which they Complained about.
This is not an ordinary perspective and wide-angle problem or what ever industry standards is.More like a failed lens design ,what is the point to use the lens like that ? Mobile phone camera should be to allow users to take pictures more easily than professional camera. Most users will not use the phone to shoot master style landscape photos. Most of them are normal shooting for ordinary live photo. If this phone designed for some landscape and flowers which are random shape please put it in the ad and packaging. Also even the landscape you can see the distortion easily than other phone.
My old note5 and the new S8 I tried ,Safe area it is roughly in green box see above photo.
It's more clear now.
Which phone will distort the portrait and object like this range? Only sony xzp.
Samsung can fix it ,wht not sony?Sony need fix it ASAP.
Rubbish lens.

WOW man, just WOW. Whatever you say is not cool. Not cool at all man.
XZP has distortion very close to center which is very different than a typical wide angle lens distortion that shows up around the edges of the photo but not very close to the center. Not to brag, just to give you perspective that i know DSLR sh**t, i own few canon full frame cameras and some nice canon L lens. Have been in photo world for a while.
Attached is mine example. Not cool at all.
I has a s6 before buying XZP, no problem at all of take pictures for family members. Now I was shocked by XZP,portrait photos are all distorted.

hi everyone,
this is my first post in the mytouch 4g slide forum. i had a g2 since the day after it came out and it died on me this weekend and apparently t-mobile isn't sending them out as replacements anymore and gave me a mytouch 4g slide instead. still trying to get used to all the senseified aspects, but so far i really liked it. can't complain about being bumped up to a dual core. and i like the keyboard better.
anyway, this post is about the camera. ever since this phone came out i've heard nothing but reviews and marketing about how its the best camera ever on a phone and how it can replace your point and shoot and how awesome it is. now don't get me wrong, this camera is crazy fast. when i push the shutter, it takes the picture, no lag at all, and that's pretty amazing. but picture quality on this thing (unless of course i'm doing something wrong) is pretty terrible. i'd go as far as to say it's not as good as my g2. if i hold the camera 10000% still, it's pretty nice but still grainy. this is with or without flash. at its best i've gotten a pic that is comparable to my g2's camera (which didn't get any any high marks when it came out).
so i'm wondering, could i be doing something wrong? is there a setting i'm not seeing? it defaulted to 8mp, which it's still on, but that shouldn't even affect picture quality anyway. i'm getting blurry and/or grainy pics. so far i've only taken pics indoors with just regular lighting, some with flash and some without. if you need i can post some examples later. would love to get some feedback here on what i might be doing wrong.
thanks everyone.
First things first - Welcome to the MT4GS forums, the doubleshot as it's otherwise known is a fantastic device. Some may call me obsessed with it but to me the doubleshot has earned every bit of the attention I give it.
Secondly - this is a camera on a cell phone - keep that in mind as you browse this post and the links to other camera threads here in the MT4GS forums i'll be including below.
I personally feel the camera on the device is fantastic. It is not going to be an equivalent to an 8MP stand-alone digital camera, it's not the same tech/hardware quality for obvious reasons. I do feel it's comparable though.
Aside from falling short on some manual settings, i've replaced my point and shoot digital camera with this device and don't feel that i've lost anything.
Here is the camera I have - an older 10MP Kodak:
http://store.kodak.com/store/ekconsus/en_US/pd/M1033_Digital_Camera/productID.145087200
Side-by-side quality comparisons of random pictures from that digital camera and the doubleshot have me preferring the doubleshot pictures almost every time - but I haven't actually sat down and snapped pictures specifically to compare the two. I could do that if anyone is interested and eventually will anyway even if people aren't.
The immediate capture mode of the camera on the doubleshot maybe makes it even in value for the manual settings I lost, but I did get into using the higher ISO exposures we don't have on the doubleshot - so maybe a slight pang of loss but i'll get over it. I mention it just to be accurate, but in my day to day I don't really think about it.
What I miss most about losing the higher ISO settings is taking pictures of the stars through my friends telescope when I have the chance to do so - I can still get pics through the telescope but not the same kind I could with those higher ISO settings. Then again - it is a cell phone we are talking about, lets not lose sight of that.
I use the camera a moderate amount overall I guess. Much more often then my dedicated digital camera because it's always with me, whereas the camera rarely was.
Took a lot of pictures around christmas, mostly of nieces and nephews and used photo apps to do fun things with them. The parents and grandparents of said kids were more then happy with the pictures, and it unquestioningly took better pictures then some of the digital cameras and all of the cell phone cameras, without exception.
(no, don't know what other cell phones were being used, some were not smart phones, and there was at least one iPhone 4S that got put to shame by the doubleshot. )
I've taken a bunch of pictures out in the woods, I like to wander in wooded areas and from time to time have played with the doubleshot camera while doing so. I've been happy with the results - could probably scrounge around on my computers and try to find some of them if you want.
Your issue with blurry or bad photos is not something i've had a problem with - but you aren't the first one to mention such an issue.
I've ended up with some blurry pictures due to autofocus on auto mode, but usually when i'm just snapping and not paying attention to what i'm doing. If i'm actually paying attention to taking pictures it's not a problem. Sometimes I have to wait for autofocus to make up it's mind if I don't tap a part of the screen to tell it where to look.
Going on that i'd say your phone probably isn't broken or damaged, but you just aren't familiar with using it yet and should experiment some. The more you use it the less likely you will be to end up where you are when you started this thread. It has some quirks to using it, and they aren't easy to articulate or communicate, you just gotta use it some to figure it out.
Go through all the menu settings for the doubleshot camera. Change them all. Try them out. Make sure you also go through the different mode settings for the camera and not just use the default auto.
Modes available:
1 - Auto,
2 - Sweepshot,
3 - Clearshot HDR,
4 - Burstshot,
5 - Night,
6 - Action,
7 - Macro,
8 - Portrait,
9 - Manual.
Make use of the different modes. If you just mess around with Auto, you are missing out and not really getting the use out of the camera that you could be.
Here are some pictures I took last night using just auto mode, attached to this post: (sorry it's long, but they are at the bottom of it)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22011956&postcount=4
How do these compare to the pictures you started this thread about? Since you didn't post them this is purely for you to review and compare with.
----
Here are some pictures I tool with the doubleshot last night using Macro Mode (for closeups), attached to this post:

EDIT: These two posts I linked to of pictures I took were at the lowest resolution (640x480) with widescreen un-checked. I did that so I could just upload to the forums without having to shrink it in photoshop first - so those pics are straight off the doubleshot.

It also has a handful of off-site links that you may find useful. It's a shame that thread has so much useless bickering, because it's got some good info.

I, and most of us, have not had this issue. More then one person has, and it's useful to link to that thread here in case anyone else does so they can get more information about it.
(It's basically a non issue and quick fix for anyone who's had the problem, at least as far as I know.)

So that's most of what I can remember off the top of my head, but i'm sure I missed a few. Anything in the last 3 weeks or so probably flew under my radar, but otherwise that should be most of what was discussed about the camera here in the MT4GS forums.
So, looks like you got a little reading and experimenting ahead of you, but hopefully this will help you work with your camera a little better and get the most out of this really cool piece of tech in your hands.
If you have any other questions about it feel free to ask, and see if you can post some of the pictures so I or others can see what you mean about blurry pics. The first two posts I linked to before linking all the threads are pictures I posted last night taken with the doubleshot I got through T-Mobile back in August, i've been the only owner and it was never serviced or warrantied - I love the camera on it.
Given that the marketing strategy behind this device was the camera, I can see how people would expect more from it then it can give - kinda over-hyped, ya know?
Fact is, the sensors for the camera are nowhere near the size of the sensors in a standalone point & shoot device dedicated to only taking pictures. There just isn't enough room to make it happen and fit everything else in the device.
The capture ability of the device is on par with roughly an 8MP dedicated digital camera, and it pretty amazing considering how small it is and that it's a phone first, camera second, and i'm more then happy with it's performance.
I'd love to see you get straightened out and get it working well, so give a shout out and maybe post some pictures when you start really having fun with it.
Can't wait to see what you come up with
My camera takes gorgeous photos almost all the time, so that is pretty strange. Are you sure you are in the right mode? Put it on the automatic mode, and try taking some pics. One time I left the camera in night mode, and forgot to turn it back. All my photos were coming out grainy and blurry, until I realized that it was in night mode. I switched it back to automatic, and all was well.

wow thanks! yea looks like i have plenty of reading to do. i haven't even had the thing a full 24 hours yet, so i'm sure i'll figure out how to make the most of it. i didn't REALLY expect it to replace a real camera (figured that was all marketing speak), but i just expect pics at least as good as my g2, and so far i haven't seen any as good as what i got with that. and it would be nice to have a camera that takes pics as nice as the iPh... not gonna say it, i don't want to get booted out of here haha. but yea. i'll report back after a week or so and let you guys know how i'm doing. loving the dual core. you can really tell the difference in getting in and out of apps.

wow that's crazy. yea like i said, i'm gonna have to give it a week, mess with it, try the different camera modes out. but in auto in my first 24hours the pics definitely weren't as good as my g2 and DEFINITELY not as good as pics i've seen off an iphone4... so that's crazy. can't wait to see what this thing can do once i really get the hang of it. must just need to get off of auto.

Those are some nice pictures - thank you for sharing them. You have a good camera eye, and also managed to illustrate a good measure of the range of capture of the device.
Seeing is believing, so it's one thing to explain it, but you said more with those pictures then I did in response to the OP's question.
That mountain shot right above the grasshopper - I drove most of the way across the country, maybe around a decade ago and had a 2MP digital camera with me. I remembered being in Colorado and just trying to take in the mountains - it's not like what we have back east with the Appalachians, but again, seeing is believing and I just wanted to see what the difference was people were always saying.
I remember trying to capture it on the camera, but when all was said and done the tech just wasn't ready for that yet. I decided on the spot right then that digital cameras were going to destroy film for casual use. I tallied up how much it would have cost me in film from the store to do what I did, and came in well over $1000 if I couldn't download the camera to my laptop whenever I wanted.
Took me back when I saw it - I got a lot of perspective in the most literal sense on that trip and it was fun to recall a tech epiphany. Thanks!

Well, if you didn't bring it up you wouldn't be starting to gether information about which one is better and why. Mentioning it got a pointer from someone else on the board towards information to address that so it was worth saying.
I'd rather see someone with a device in their hand that does what they want, whatever that ends up being, and the more you know about them the more likely you get what you need, instead of what someone else thinks you need.
Obviously if you wanted to learn more about that one specifically there are other places to go for that, but information comparing the doubleshot to something else belongs floating around here.
The other day I was using my friends iphone 4. (Not the 4s)
I was taking a picture of a stack of red plastic party cups across the room with both phones, while the phones were held against the arm of the couch I was sitting on.
The stack was actually showing up blurry on the mt4gs(not countable)
On the iphone 4 the stack was sharper, and I was actually able to count how many were there.
I would say the iphone 4 had sharper photos at this 20-25 foot range, however my phone was able to capture the real color of the room. It matched exactly what I saw with my naked eye and the iphones colors were way off.
I dunno if I should blame the software used for focusing our camera, or if the iphones 5mp camera is actually better for sharpness.
One tip I would tell you is to disable widescreen mode, it will give you a higher resolution than 8mp wide.
Also, yes. Macro mode is pro.

Here's some of my pictures, my parrot is in macro mode, and the fake beach scene is auto mode, 5 feet away, with flash on.
I used that photo for my brothers wedding shower invitation

just started snapping a few shots with widescreen turned off and macro turned on (even though i'm shooting a mix of close and far shots) and its already making a world of difference. i think that widescreen thing is the real culprit. gonna try it on auto without widescreen next to see if i'm right. but yea i think in making your pics widescreen its definitely reducing the clarity and sharpness of the shots. the first few shots i've taken with widescreen off are really nice. i'll probably post some pics later.
ok so i've searched all over the place and all i see is the actual camera unit for sale. i can't find the outside piece thats on the case (the glass piece). mine is all scratched up and my pics look like ****. all blurry and fuzzy looking. i'd like to replace it, but can't find that piece. any help would be appreciated. thank you guys.

From the links, it looks like it's built into the back casing. Kinda makes sense though since it would have to be pressfit on I guess.

I took a screen protector and cut a small square. Placing that over the camera has removed the haze from my pictures.

next time round get a case/pouch mine covers my entire phone protecting from both scratches and impact damage.
BTW the DZ cam is pretty crappy and blurry any way ........ even by pinhole lens phone cam standards so don't expect miracles once replaced.

Umm, no. My Z takes pretty good photos. Of course very low light situations will result in longer shutter time, and increased chances for blur due to camera or the subject moving. But in most conditions good photos are very possible, and mostly a matter of technique and experience. Manually adjusting ISO, white balance, taking advantage of what light is present, and bracing the camera can all have major impact on the quality of the photo, even in lower light situations. Moral of the story your problem is likely more the user, and not the equipment. I don't mean that in a pejorative way. But while not the best camera phone around, good photos are possible with the Z, with the proper technique.
I used a mild lens restorer on mine fixed her right up. Perfect pictures again

No offence bro but considering the fact i was a professional photographer for 6 years straight and still do some work now as a pro photographer.
I have no "problems" with photographic "technique"
Maybe my ideas of 'clear' and 'sharp' digital images is a little more informed and nuanced than yours. But compared to a few other 5mp phone cameras IMHO the Desire Z is on average at best and poor if you want to be critical.

Hard to take your comment of "no offence" seriously, as you are bragging about your photog experience and how much "more informed" you are than me (no basis for any such claim). Why not keep it to a technical discussion, instead of boasting about how awesome you are, "bro"?
Largely comes down to expectations and opinion. Camera phones are largely for spur-of the moment snapshots (not serious photography). For this, the Desire Z is just fine. We are also talking about a phone that is a year and a half old. In its time, its camera was much better (especially low light) than the iPhone iteration of the time (3GS). Were there camera phones at the time that were a bit better, yes, but not drastically. More recent phones have significantly better cameras, and the One X looks to blow away most the competition (except the Nokia Pureview's monster 41 MP camera). But seeing as every other spec on smartphones has come a long way in the past year and a half, its not really fair to compare the Z to newer phones.
Also, seeing as the OP is just looking to restore his present technology to a previous condition, calling it "crappy and blurry" doesn't really help him out at all.
Agree with previous poster, seriously if you want good pics you get an slr or dedicated rig. Most people don't carry that around. For what it is the camera on this phone is very good to good enough depending who you ask and their expectations. Sure beats carrying around a point and shoot or slr multi lens combo. Like I told the OP if your considering getting a new back then try cleaning it up with a mild abrasive like a lens restorer, CD scratch remover something of that nature. I used the stuff for headlights it was like 5 bucks. Don't go crazy I used super minimal pressure and a soft paper towel and it took all of 30 seconds to clear up no joke. Good as new and I haven't had to do it again. In my case it was the anti-reflective coating in the glass, since it was shot who cares right? Came off and pics are sharp again. In the future if I actually scratch it I'll probably buy a replacement but that did it for me. Just my 2 cents.
I had the same problem as you, but I managed to fix it using a polish dedicated to car headlights.
Thaks for the links, i have problems with the camera glass too.

There is very little talk of this device on Xda, other than some mentions here and there on the regular Crystal forums.
Also, I have not yet seen any english speaking people giving a review of it on Youtube (or anywhere else for that matter). So far it has just been hands-on at Sharp stands and such.
I therefore thought it might be of interest to some, that I share my experiences.
Now I know this smartphone is not gonna be widely adopted outside of Japan.
Not having cdma or the 800mhz(?) gsm band used in the U.S, it seems silly for anyone to import this back to the the states. Taking into account that you have to add on the cost of getting it sim unlocked, makes it pretty pricey for a high end device (with previous gen "flagship" hardware).

At the time of writing this, I have only had this device in my possession for two days.
Keep that in mind. I will therefore have problems with assessing battery life and similar things that need a bit more time to be accurately evaluated.
I guess the natural place to start would be:
Appearance
Biggest selling point is of course the edgeless 5.5 inch display.
I previously came from the the M8, before that, Z1.
I love htc's screens (Atleast since the HOX).
We all know the viewing angles of the Z1 (coming from the Z before that, I was stumped that they managed to fail twice on that front), but straight on it has the most natural looking colors of any smartphone I have ever had.
Let's say that the Z1 is at one end of the scale, M8 in the middle, and typical Samsung amoled screens at the other end. The Crystal X would imo fall between the Z1 and the M8, not so far off the htc. It looks the best of the three, and I'm sure that is just because there's more screen to look at
Under
Settings > wallpaper & display > Quality mode
you can choose color modes (Standard quality, Dynamic, Natural, Relax).
I have not had time to scrutinize the differences on a ton of photos and graphics just yet.
I have tried out Dynamic (which is default) and Natural a little. Relax looks absolutely crazy, and makes white and light colors get a sort beige tint.
@ 157 grams, the phone is right in my comfort zone.
Even though there is no metal body, it does not feel plasticky or anything like that.
The power button and the volume rocker are not wobbly, but stiff, and give off nice satisfying clicks.
Being edgeless makes it a bit thicker than the competition these days, but thanks to being rounded at the back, it doesn't feel fat at all (I have turned a little out of shape the last couple of years, maybe I'm projecting my insecurities:laugh
I am going to even out the pattern on the back piece and spray paint it.
Tactile wise I don't feel it being bad or good, but I am doing it for two reasons:
-I like a sleek finish more then patterns
-the camera actually protrudes just a tiny tiny bit. This will hopefully neutralize that "threat", and avoid it being a resting point for the phone.
Innards
I could toss up the numbers here, but that is one google away, so just do that.
Key things to note here would be non-removable battery, and micro sd slot.
The "direct wave receiver... thingy (hell let's just call it a tiny buttkicker) works very well.
I was a tad worried when I read the instructions.
It says something along the lines of "make sure your entire ear covers the glass, to block out surrounding noise and to achieve the best audio experience"
The reality is, you don't even have to be near the screen. I have to actually turn the volume down quite a bit so it don't act as a speakerphone. Not to say it's so loud it's bothersome, or that people will unintentionally eavesdrop 10 feet away though.
If you are out and about in the city, the background noise would even that out easily.
My point is here that my skepticism was merely unfounded.
On to the:
Interaction
I have been running lollipop on my M8 and Nexus 9 for a while now, and liking it I might add. So naturally I would like it to land on the Crystal X as well.
Root is however more important to me right now (this phone badly deserves it)
So we are left with 4.4.4.
It is pretty close to stock. The notification panel looks a bit different.
Weirdly enough, you can't get to the brightness slider unless you go into settings. The brightness tile in the dropdown only gives you four choices (min, med, max and auto).
Rom is snappy, but certain apps introduces micro lags when scrolling.
There are other small features, like swiping from one side to the other on the status bar to take a screenshot or open image viewer.
Many (me included) hate those times when you are looking at media in portrait, and things are askew. So you tilt it just enough to see aaand blammo! auto rotation kicks in.
Grip sensors avoid this from happening.
It's been a while since I've been dependent on the power button for turning the screen on/off (and never going back). The grip sensors are therefore something I think everyone would greet with open arms (or with a firm grip I should say).
Just pick it up, and you're off to the races.
The speaker on the back is fairly loud. Nothing extreme, but well within my expectations.
Camera is something I have yet to fully explore. Looks a little sony-ish (not bad).
Not the fastest shooter, but seems like it takes good pics. I will pit it against my other relevant devices tomorrow.
Will be interesting to see how it fares against the M8 in low light.
In pitch black where you really rely on your flash, I think the Aquos might struggle more, because quite frankly, the flash on this thing is lackluster. Which means it's not a great flashlight either.
The final act:
Conclusion
When you add all that up in a blender, I will gulp it down and ask for seconds.
There is the question of: Will this device ever receive root?
Looking at the Crystal forums, it doesn't reassure me all that much.
One can just hope. I might also consider anteing up a phone and/or cash as a root bounty at some point.
All in all, no big letdowns. My worries were quickly put to rest.
If I had the chance to go back, I would buy it one more time
I hope there are already other owners (or future ones) out there, who stumbles over this thread and can chime in. Maybe we can group together and create a wave.
I will try to take som better photo's of the phone outside in the daytime a little later tomorrow. Also as mentioned, a camera shootout.
So what have we learned today kids?
Don't put Sharp-ie in pooper!
I absolutely love mine as well. I have owned it for 3 days and have been very impressed. My only complaint is that I only get edge and would love to be able to get at least 3g connection. I think it really is one of the nicest phones I have owned and I have owned a lot. I wish we could add radio bands to make the 3g possible. I find the little differences in the software to be nothing more than a little annoying. I actually shut off the swipe to activate feature as I found it always activating when I slipped it into the sleeve.

EDGE is brutal. I feel for you there.
Hopefully within a short time frame I will be able to test it on LTE-A (4G+), since around these parts they are rolling it out right now to several of the biggest cities here (I live fairly close to the capital).
I was quite busy yesterday, so I have not yet had time to take more photos. Hopefully I will have time a little later today though.

I don't think you can. Only seen a setting for changing the spacing.
I just force immersive mode to get rid of it.
I am happy to say that Lmt luncher is working great (V2.4)

I use Go Launcher and that way it becomes transparent by default. I can also swipe up and it disappears completely. I can do the same for the notification bar as well.

Mine has gone through three different chargers, and they charge much more than 500mah (Logitech 1A, HTC 1.5A, HTC 2A)
Have not even had time to roll back the Z1 and the M8 to stock yet.
Thinking of comparing the three in a couple of scenes in full resolution, 8Mpx, both with their respective cameras and the google camera.
Meanwhile, two quick "glam" shots:
Does anyone know the technical details of the phone?
Like aperture, and if it has ois?
@benziii , does it have the slow-motion (240fps) which is highlighted on the new zeta models ?
Thanks for reviewing this, any chance of a source link?

Battery life
Guys what is the battery life on the 402sh like? Also this is not hugely important but what is the colour of bezel on the black 402sh? Is it really black? Reason I am asking is Id like to get this in black but when I look at the pictures of the black version, the front still looks whitish to grayish rather than pure black. Can someone please confirm?
Awesome!
I really hoped this phone will get. root, but it seems we have failed to create a wave.
I have seen some websites that demand payments for rooting your device.
I'd like to know if they are reliable at all.
Hey there,
see, I'm not really the impatient kind of guy, I have lived through all the LG G4 issues, I had my deviced repaired three times. People make mistakes, so do major companies.
But one thing I really don't fancy is the feeling of being mocked. Right now, I'm really considering returning my XZP and kissing Sony good bye for good.
Here's why:
My smartphone has some random weird bugs:
- the front facing speaks just switch off randomly until restart
- the screen sometimes flickers until I turn adaptive illumination off and on again
- did anyone here check only reviews? Most hail the camera for its impressive quality. What quality!? My old G4 beats the XZP under all conditions, the G2 is at least very very close - and it's now four years old.
- and the distortion issue.
I mentioned a few things on the Sony forum and for some weird reason all of these threads just disappear into thin air. When contacting the Sony support, they'd advise me to do a software reset (MoFo please!).
Is this a bad joke? Is that how Sony wants to get back in the game of top-notch smartphones? I'm beginning to understand all the promos for those who preordered - they knew what they had coming.
Really, it's kind of hard to get me pi**ed but I'm kinda pi**ed.

Yea, sure. But that is not what I meant. It's not about returning and having it repaired (what btw will not happen if they don't even acknowledge the issue), it's about how they deal with that. I mean, especially talking of the distortion issue - that is not just me. That is most likely with all devices or at least a very very big share. How come they just ignore that? LG or even Apple, they are at least straight when they make mistakes.

And here I just picked up two Premiums haha. Sorry that you're unhappy.
I don't think Sony is ignoring anything. But it is not even fully released yet around the world. I am sure they are aware of the issues and "hopefully" will come up with a patch to remedy all the big issues. As for your particular phone you may have received a lemon and simply need to replace it. I can appreciate the major hassle of doing such a thing but it is an unfortunate reality in today's world. I say all this as an owner of the black version of the xz premium and I love it. I am not having the major issues that some are having. Got it from the UK.
Most definitely a defective unit. Speakers turning off until restart? Not gonna have any of that lol. RETURN FOR ANOTHER UNIT IF POSSIBLE!
My own case is different, I feel like I've got the best device for me at the moment.

Well you definitely are suffering from the distortion issue, all XZP phones have it. Open up a grid pattern on your PC screen or take a picture of a brick wall. You will definitely notice a pincushion deformation at the edges of the picture.

For god's sake, who would take picture of perfectly square grid on a daily basis?
This is just like those idiots who bought a thousand dollars wide angle DSLR lens and complain about distortion by shooting only brick walls all day.
Wide angle has distortion! It is tough to get rid of it physically in the glass already for full size camera, let alone getting rid of it in a lens the size of a pea!
If the lens on the phone can be that perfect, you will be paying well over $1000 for the phone itself!
If camera is all you care, go get Huawei's P9/P10!
To OP, seriously, replace your phone, many users aren't having same issues as you do meaning yours is faulty!
It is much more realistic to physically go replace it than to whine about it online! Finding sympathy in virtual world will get you no where, this goes the same for all other brands!
Let Sony gets your faulty unit to examine, and to prevent same thing from happening in future phones is much more realistic than raising waves online with all sorts of words.

People don't do doesn't mean issue is gone. Xperia Z3 compact has wide angle lens too, it doesn't have such significant distortion. Galaxy S7 also has large FOV lens, but their developer gave an auto-correction option. We payed almost same price, and Sony said its camera is perfect in ad.s
what's more, wide angle lens won't take photos like this, it's the damn lens correction software fault
Sony just manage to balance its cheque book in the mobile field. Honestly, allow them time to cure it, Sony deserve to stay.
All I wanna point out is that, it is not really big issue unless you shoot picture of computer mon, grid or brick wall all day. And many people mixed the distortion with typical wide angle lens perspective distortion, which created more chaos than necessary.
Many people still shooting great picture of people and scenary, so stop worrying so much. Have fun with the phone, when times come the firmware upgrade, we will get even better grid/brick wall pictures.

Sony saving its mony in a wrong way. They deliver the best cmos, but do less work on software. Photos still look painted, and without OIS (EIS only in Video mode), it is hard to take a perfect photo at night

I am suffering from the distortion issue right now ,bought it because I saw the ad shows a perfect camera on this phone.
Well, true, they need more effort on software side. Again, they are in the right step with the new managment focusing on collaboration between departments, time will tell how much better they will do. Previously they don't collaborate.
Hi
Can you please recommend me a phone that wont distort my face a lot and wont make It look long and droopy?
I know all phones have some face distortion of the front camera, but my last 2 phones Xiaomi Redmi 7 and Huawei P9 Lite Make a huge distortion and deform the face. They make the face very long and like if I have a square jaw and droopy lower face jowls. I Am 21 Years old so i don't Have any jowls or droopy face in real life, I even visited a plastic surgeon who told me my face looks fine, and it is phone distortion. I hace try my front camera on my parents and friends and it distort and deform their faces too.
The distortion is very big, not just a Little bit, and it is happening on videos with the front camera as well.
I have not been able to upload pictures to my Instagram due this problem for the Last 2 Years.
I want to change my phone, but I dont want this problem happening again, and I dont know which phone should I buy., I want a phone that take normal pictures, so I can use them in social media.
The only feature I care about the phone I want to buy is that it does not deform the face extremely, and it does not elongate it, I dont care about any other feature.
I hope someone can advice me, thanks in advance.
Change the shot angle and/or distance.
Cams don't make as much of a difference as the shooter does...

Thanks , I have try with all shot angles and distances ( desperate not to be able to upload a single picture on Instagram, so I spent many hours taking pictures from all angles and distances) , and it does not help, even with a selfie stick it make the head and the face super long and skinny ( both Xiaomi and huawei phones), the face look more like an ugly cartoon than like a normal girl. I am sure it is a lens problem, as I never had that problem with any of my previous phones. That is why I want to buy a new one. The faces of instagram influencers are not elongated or deformed, so there must be some brand phones that dont cause that problem. Even if I try an Instagram vídeo with ig filter the face look distorted.

Absolute correct: It's never the camera what malfunctions, but depending on the lighting or distance from the camera, one looks different.
It is due to the inability of OP to photograph properly.
OP should use the rear camera, move away from the camera and zoom in 2x-3x, then the elongated face will disappear.

That is interesting, but i need a phone that I can use the front camera, as I want to use real time filters and real time digiital make up while I do videos, and see which poses and facial expresions am I doing before taking my pictures, I dont want to take pictures with the rear camera, and mostly any girl use rear one when taking pictures and videos for social media, and my other previous phone did not have this problem, so I am sure some phone brands dont distort the face as much as my Xiaomi and Huawei. I had a Sony Xperia before that took nice pictures with the front camera.
I will try moving the camera away and zoom it, but still want a new phone that dont distort so much.
Thanks

They are simply mirrored images.
However the photo image is incorrect as it should be a mirror image as well
Be then they are all photos...

When you take a photo of yourself using some ( but not all ) apps or the front-facing camera on a phone, the resulting image captures your face as others see it: it's not the image you see when you look into a mirror.
That's why so many people are horrified when they see photos of themselves.

This is not the case of my phone problem, as I have had tons of mobiles sinceramente I was 10 years old, and I am used to see myself in pictures. I am not comparing myself with the mirror image!!!! I look fine on my friends phones and in my previous phones, my mom has the same phone than me and have the same problem, she takes pictures fron my aunty phone to be able to upload them.
I am not asking how to fix the phones cámaras, I am just asking which brand and model dont have this problem to buy it, the distorsión on my phones is not just a little bit like the pictures you uploaded, it is a huge distortion, whhen my friends try my phones it distort their face big time too .
Any young girl and many middle aged women spend really a lot of time taking selfies, so we all know how we normally look in phones. It is not my first phone or the first time I take a front camera picture as to freak out cos I look different than the mirror.
I upload a picture ,( not me, but a guy who wortte an article about this subject) but an example of my problem.
My face in other phones look maybe like the 2nd picture, on my phone it looks completely distorted ( not a bit) like the Last picture of the guy. And uy look like that fron far away too. not only in me, buy anyone using my phone look deformed in the picture or video.
I just want a phone that the lens is not so screw up that deform the face completely.

Thanks very much! Can you please delete the thread or my account here, I dont find a way to do It, and I am fed up of having immature men old enough to be my father or my grandfather trying to bully me and make fun of me.
I would love to delete my post as obviously I am not going to get any help, and my post seen to attract people who like to bully and are very rude.

Good morning, XDA universe! Allow me to commence the day with a radio... hmmm... Moderator Announcement!
Within less than 12 hours after the last thread cleaning by my esteemed team mate @mrjuniork I had to clean it again! And believe me, enough is enough!
Members, and it doesn't matter if mature, long-time or really new ones, who post a question do that because THEY have a quite often serious problem that might be none for others or could be neglected in other member's views.
But we're happy that new people permanently find their way to XDA in order to ask their questions and to seek support here. We do encourage this!
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do so. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably quite a few people with less experience than you, who could benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.

If you can't or don't want to follow above guidance just move on without posting. But if you post do it without making jokes of the enquirer or by belittling somebody. Be aware that both can be read as disrespect towards a XDA member and might lead to consequences to an account.

@Sonia2001 A very warm welcome to XDA; I do hope that you always get the support and assistance you require although you obviously currently have a different impression. Please consider to have a look at some other threads in this forum or all the other Q&A fora and see that usually the expectations of the authors are met. I'm convinced this will eventually also the case for your current one but also for all your future threads.
I'm very and honestly sorry to read your decision especially after you just joined yesterday. I'd really appreciate if you reconsider your decision. It's indeed as you stated you can't delete your account; even a moderator can't do. It always requires an administrator for that.
