Aaaaaarg! GearVR decomissioned!!! - Samsung Galaxy S10e Guides, News, & Discussion

OK, I used my good old S10e only for GearVR. Last day it installed update and told me: "F U dear customer, your GearVR is now paperweight".
What would be the best strategy to
1) DOWNGRADE the firmware to previous or any good version
2) obtain (where?) GearVR binaries to reinstall?

I dont know the answer but I feel your pain.. Everything is going to the dump because there are no rules stopping companies from making everything obsolete. Its a shame.
Was it an update to android 12 that killed gearVR, its not clear if your referring to the app or android itself?

Super Bad News: JH7 is it!

Just chatted again with Samsung Support and there is no additional update coming out to fix the GPS. Anyone wanting to jump ship waiting for a fix, can jump now.
here is my chat log...
Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Alice '
Visitor: hello alice
Alice : Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: I had chatted with support last week about the over the air update to my captivate phone via att.
Visitor: the samsung rep told me not to do it
Visitor: which i did not.
Visitor: I did notice that a Kies mini application is now listed on your website
Visitor: should i install that? will that give me the update to my captivate phone?
Alice : Yes, that's correct.
Visitor: I understand from my previous chat session that a gps update was coming
Visitor: before the end of september
Visitor: is the update from this Kies mini program that update? or something else?
Alice : The update was for the firmware and to fix the GPS issue as well.
Alice : I'm sorry, the update is not for Kies.
Visitor: I was told that the update, wasn't the gps update
Visitor: and it wasn't ready yet, and that when it would be ready it would be on the samsung website
Alice : I'm sorry for the mis-communication.
Visitor: after speaking with my friend who applied the update, he said his gps didn't get any better
Alice : The update was for the firmware which also enhances and fixes the GPS issue.
Visitor: is the over the air update the same as the one from the Kies mini?
Visitor: so is it fair to say, that this is "the update" and no other ones are coming out to fix the gps issue?
Alice : No, the firmware only updates the connectivity name from Samsung Kies to Kies.
Visitor: i do not understand your last reply
Visitor: once i load the mini kies software, it will push out an update with the last letters JH7
Alice : I understand your concern.
Visitor: this firmware or fix is the one to fully address the gps issue?
Alice : Yes, that's correct.
Visitor: there are no other updates coming out before end of september?
Visitor: so i am to expect the next update will be android 2.2 operating system?
Alice : Please click on the link given below to access the article with instructions to update the handset:
Alice : http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=558&AT_ID=339171
Alice : The Update is not for Android 2.2.
Alice : In the future, the device should be upgradeable to Android Froyo 2.2.
Alice : Important Notice: Samsung Customer Care has no knowledge of when/if a release will be made available prior to official release.
Visitor: what i am trying to get at.. is there any other gps fixes or updates coming out to make the gps respond better
Visitor: i think there maybe an issue with my phone because i am unable to check for a software update
Visitor: it says it can't connect to att servers
Alice : The link provided is to update the handset and if the fix for GPS issue.
Alice : In this regard, I suggest you try updating the handset after a while as the network to update is now al a maximum load and may take some time.
Visitor: i read the article
Visitor: and it does not say there is a gps fix or update in it
Visitor: sorry
Visitor: see it now
Visitor: ok will try kies mini route.
Visitor: if my gps is still not working properly what do you suggest?
Visitor: a replacement?
Alice : Typically Samsung warranty covers repair only, unfortunately I do not have the authority to offer any exchanges at this time. If you would like to only discuss an exchange at this time, I can recommend that you contact our Voice support at 1-888-987-4357, Mon-Fri: 7 AM - 9 PM (CST), Sat: 9 AM - 6 PM (CST).
Visitor: I of course have to try the update first...
Visitor: but in your opinon, should i request an exchange if it does not work?
Alice : If you experience any issue after updating the handset, please call the above provided phone support for the options available according to the situation.
Visitor: ok thanks for your help
Samsung supports are typically clue less. Don't take their words for anything. For all I care, you might just chatted with a bot.
great bot! check out the link the bot sent me... clearly it says gps update.

Yes, that's what the info they got. Remember Samsung publically said the same thing when JH7 is first released. Support CSRs are the last person to know any upcoming updates. That shows how bad Samsung support really are.
Great, Samsuck totally screwed us with this
I'll give Samsung/ATT until the end of September to get an actual GPS fix out, like they said they would.
I have already called AT&T about the issue and they are prepared to give me another phone of my choice if I decide to send it back to them.
Otherwise, I will probably sell it and go back to a Nexus One or maybe attempt to get a Telus Desire. I think it has the ATT 3G bands.
Alice seems to frequent these forums from Samsung chat logs. She never seems to know whats going on either.
I just went up through the ranks of Samsung customer support right before posting this. Chat first, won't waste your time posting it here as it has already wasted enough of my time. Second, phone call to "tier 2" support, had me do a battery pull and restart, obviously a waste of time, got transferred to "tier 3" support, apparently the highest level of support and where I was really trying to get anyway. Had me go into settings and turn on "wireless networks", yet another complete waste of time. However, I wasn't looking for him to fix it over the phone, I only wanted information.
Believe me when I tell you I held his feet to the fire looking for some information on whether or not there was ANY information or ANY update coming out AFTER the JH7 OTA update. He assured me there was no information on any other update in the pipe other than JH7 which had obviously already been released. I did get him to divulge that they have had "a few" other calls from people who's GPS was still not working even after the update and that the calls that had come in so far were only for the samsung captivate and that they hadn't had any other calls in regards to the other Galaxy S phones on the other carriers which seems suspect to me since to the best of my knowledge, all the other Galaxy S phones share the same GPS problems. He said all he could do was take down my information and pass it on to "research and development". I even tried to get him to transfer me to research and development to no avail.
In the end, the only recourse I had was to mail a letter to "Customer Relations" or some such thing in Texas explaining my situation. I really believe that the only thing I took from the conversation that was of any real use is that the only way they are going to do anything about the problem is if they get enough people calling and complaining about it.
Do yourself and all of us a favor and call in to voice your concern with getting the problem fixed. It only takes a couple of minutes and maybe someone will be able to get more information than I was able to. 1-888-987-4357. Sorry I don't have better news to report.

samsungs crappy support ftw!
Another post about an uninformed service rep - taken as gospel.
I really wish all the people that posted and believed this stuff would actually jump ship - then the forums would have less junky alarmist posts.
I have to say, that was somewhat painful to read. You pretty much railroaded her. You kept making multiple unrelated statements and mixing them with multiple questions before giving her a chance to respond. I don't feel like you could learn anything that way.

Good point, it was really hard to read that. It may be an automated bot it may not be, but the questions were so all over the place that it was impossible to tell what was going on.
Again, if this was a person making matter of fact statements - it is not someone in the know. It is just a 1st or 2nd level tech support person and they never know what is really happening in the dev world.
I didn't think there would be such a backlash against me about this thread. I was trying to be helpful and let others know that according to support, there isn't another update for GPS.
If you want to believe it is a robot, or canned, or some dumbass they put on the chats is your right. But my bubble has been burst and I don't think another fix is coming.
My strategy was to try and see if Alice would slip and let me know if there was a gps update coming out. She did not falter.
I would love to be proven wrong and would love to see the magic bullet gps fix, but i have zero hopes of that now.
The gps is big for me, but the rest of the phone is great.
I think everyone can agree this was a debacle for Samsung, and my next phone will probably be an HTC.
I will also keep most things to myself as well because clearly they are unhelpful in this forum.
We all know there is Froyo update that will be coming in a month or two. Samsung has the time to tweak the GPS more or even fix it in Froyo build.
But I don't think there is any Eclair 2.1 GPS fix in the works. All indications are Samsung has decided to move on.
Nothing personal against OP but I personally will not trust anything Samsung support said over the phone or in a chat session. Have been there many many times before.
Today a Samsung rep told me the sky would be falling...
Okay all jokes aside and as someone who has worked support before, reps are bottom feeders. They do not know anything about their company, their companies mission, or current development/progress. They are given a task, and their task is to find a way to keep you from calling in again while making sure that you buy a product from them in the future.
From the responses, she is not a bot. Thinking it is a bot is just silly, however, this does look scripted. Likely samsung is using India, the phillipines, etc.
If you allow this interaction to shape your feelings about your phone, I would like to question your intelligence. You're going to get this from any company. The grass isn't any greener on the other side.
Don't expect better from htc. The evo was capped at 30 fps. All the reps told anyone who asked that this would be unfixable in software because it was a hardware cap. They stuck to their story until a few days ago, when they removed the cap in software. That's not an isolated incident either. I remember when they sold phones with great gpus and advertised that fact. They didn't actually have drivers for it in the phone, so the gpu just say there inert. They never fixed that. Htc regularly lies to their customers, just like samsung.

I'm curious as to how you "know" a Froyo update is coming in a month or two? AT&T has never once officially committed to releasing a 2.2 update. The only thing that's been official is that the I-9000 was supposed to get 2.2 by the end of september, and now that's slipped back to some time in October, probably the end of the month. Samsung has to get any updates approved by AT&T. Maybe I'm missing something, but I have not seen one official word from AT&T concerning this, just speculation on top of conjecture from people on here "in the know"...
Alice and Kies-Min
I'm in the USA so technically according to *Alice* with which I also chatted online, Kies is not supported. (of course that person provided the link to Kies Mini anyways) I was clearly told this is the JH7 update which WILL fix the GPS. From other forums I have read I will lose PC/Internet (tethering). Alice indicated yes, I'd lose that then.. oh wait, no I wouldn't.. it'd be a choice I could chose. So I downloaded and installed KiesM. I connected my phone and no surprise it didn't recognize it. I rebooted the phone. I am rooted, 1click lag fix and att bloatware removed. The KiesM found my phone and said it was unregistered and would not allow me to update it. I then closed the app and opened up normal Kies. It found there was a new version of Kies (assumed it included the JH7 update) and it downloaded etc. It also said it could update my firmware. When i attempted I get an error showing my pda, phone and software versions and states (while none are jh7) that it could not be updated. I also have tried the over the air option and continue to get no updates available. So, I can't even get this (what about half say sucks other half love) update even if I wanted to. Pretty disappointing. I really do love this phone EXCEPT that it doesnt connect to my alpine ida-x001 which I have scoured forums everywhere to see why the usb continually connects and disconnects and this second issue, poor, terrible GPS functionality. Last night was the first time I actually needed it but fortunately I can read a map and street signs fairly well and didnt need the locator beacon, just the actual address. Point of my long post, if you know how to get the update via kies let me know. If you know that it being rooted and ATT's bloatware will prevent it from installing, respond to let me know and I can try the update. I'm not opposed to it... however reluctant i am according to the negative posts..

In the US Galaxy S release party, Samsung publically promised Froyo 2.2 for all US Galaxy S variants. AT&T didn't say otherwise. So, we will take the Samsung's PR or marketing's words for granted.

Official GB to come this summer

In my sadness of downgrading back to froyo, I asked HTC when their official release of gb would be out and got this email:
Dear Matthew,
Thank you Matthew for contacting HTC Technical Support. We are excited to announce that HTC Thunderbolt will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Summer 2011.

Unfortunately, Summer 2011 means anything between April and September.
why can't google make something like where you download os update separate from vendors? so you can update your phone to latest without bringing in useless vendor who only if something slows things down?!
thats what they said before the phone was launched, initially it was june, it might happen since we already had a leak that was pretty stable other than the radio and camera app, so keep your fingers crossed. I am thinking at the end of june.
Free wireless hotspot promo ends June 15 and VZW already said it would be disabled with an ota. Hopefully that will be our gingerbread also.

it could happen if google had a list of parts vendors are allowed to use. Everyone uses different cpu's, gps chips, wifi, and crap and that's why the os is so fragmented. If google had a set standard for hardware specs it wouldn't be so hard.
Android will always be fragmented, It doesn't mean how many companies sign up for the promised os updates for 18 months. This is one thing that is bad about android. My next phone will be google branded, atleast it has the best support possible.
Didn't they set up like a committee thing with all the companies to speed up the updating process?

Those same companies would also prefer that you purchase a new phone rather than have to support their existing ones.
Im not going to hold my breath waiting for Verizon. Maybe for a more stable leaked release.
If you're going to run with a rooted Bolt you're not going to care when Verizon releases the OTA because by the time they actually do it just about everyone in this forum will be running the leaked (& safe for rooted bolts) radios and ROM of some kind.
We'll also probably see the OTA weeks before VZW acutally pushes it (unless somehow jcase and company can't get their hands on a leaked version and make it safe for rooted phones before the OTA pushes...which I wouldn't bet money on.)
maybe it the start of OZ's summer, so that would make it like december.
Wonder where these leaks come from?
I am more excited about all ROMs moving to GB with stable base. The community ROMs work so much better than the vendor released for my taste.

Tab 3 7.0 WiFi is on 4.2? Samsung thinks so...

I just had an interesting chat with samsungs own live tech support who assured me that my tab 3 7.0 (sm-t210r) is on android 4.2.2. He even remote accessed my tablet to try to update it for me when I told him I was still on 4.1 software. Either I am totally missing something or they have no idea about their own products. Needless to say he was unable to update my tab remotely and I more or less politely cut him a break and got out of the chat.
Seth: I understand that you want to know if Tab 3 is being supported by Samsung yet as there are newer version tabs available.
Seth: No, as of now, the latest version available for Tab 3 is 4.2.2.
shaun: Basically yes. I bought it new nearly a year ago and it hasnt gotten an update yet.
shaun: is that for the wifi sm-210r? Because if it is mine is busted because I can't update it
Seth: Yes, it is for Wi-Fi only version.
shaun: ok, so is there a way to update it manually? i'm on 4.1 still and if i try to update it says I have the most current version
Seth: You will be receiving a notification to your tab once the update is released. You can update it over the air.
shaun: I'm a bit confused. If its on 4.2 and I have 4.1 doesnt that mean its released and I should have gotten an update?
Seth: Yes, you could try checking for the update on the device.
Seth: I would like to offer you the option of using Samsung’s Remote Support service. This service will let me remotely access your product and quickly troubleshoot this issue for you. May I have your permission to begin the Remote Support now?
shaun: sure but i'm actually on my pc atm. do i have to log in from my tablet?
Seth: No, you need to just download the Smart Tutor app on your device.
Seth: Please download the smart tutor app on your device from Play Store. The app will allow me to control your device remotely in order to fix your issue. The connection and session is secure and you may disconnect from it at any time.
shaun: ok i installed it and did the update for the app
Seth: Thank you for confirming.
Seth: Please tap on the app and you will be prompted for remote connection code.
Seth: The connection code is 136XXX.
shaun: its saying failed to connect to server please advise representative
Seth: Please exit the app and access your device again, then enter the code 19XXXX.
shaun: ok it is running at this time
Seth: Good to hear that.
Seth: I have successfully established a remote connection with your device. Please allow me to check with the issue.
shaun: ok
Seth: Thank you for holding. I appreciate your patience.
Seth: The update will normally be released in batches, you will be receiving the update when you device has it's turn. You should be receiving a notification when the update is released.
shaun: no problem. its been driving me nuts since I have been stuck on 4.1. Can't use apps to sd with that version and 8gb aint much storage.
shaun: may I ask when it came out? I check regularly and most sites are still saying 4.1.2 is the newest version released for the non carrier version
Seth: I understand how upsetting that must be as I am a consumer myself.
Seth: I am afraid; we do not have the exact information for the release date of the update; however, you should be receiving the popup soon.
Seth: I don't want to mislead you with incorrect information. I would have surely helped you if I had the information.
shaun: Thats ok, as long as its not a issue with my tablet I dont mind waiting.
Seth: Thank you.
shaun: I think thats all I had for you today. Thank you for the help.
Seth: Thank you for waiting. I'll be with you in just a moment.
Seth: If you are looking for more details on the functionality of a product or would like to find answers to some of the questions, visit us at SamsungSimulator for an interactive review of some of our Samsung products.
Seth: Is there anything else I can assist you with?
shaun: No, I think that was all. Thank you again
hi,
i've had interactions like that before, don't waste your time with customer/tech deflection.
as for official updates on a wifi only tablet samsung has nothing of worth on offer, attempted root busting
sneaky spyware updates etc. if your not bound by warranty concerns go custom.
in spite of all the initial complaints about this tab, the devs are gaining more ground towards
making it quite decent. the p5210 too. ihave both and i'm really starting to like them.
anyway peace
I just found it odd he had no idea about the firmware for there own product. He even took remote access and tried to do the "update"... Twice!!! I could have googled it in two seconds and told him its still on 4.1. Come this holiday season its all apple for me, phones and tab. Android has become like its own app store. Bloated with tons of unsupported crap.

the c-s person operates off of a script - prescribed actions, responses, chains forged of
pure wonderful infuriating protocol.
in the samsung case i did an experiment and ultimately realized
that each rep probably has a text file open for cut and paste generic respones.
as for the remote access they are likely checking you device for warranty infractions
so they can potentially cut you short and send you on your way
and lastly even if they turn out to be an xda dev guru on their off time
they're not allowed to reveal that or act in that mode
monitoring IS constant
wonderful, isn't it?

[Completed] Locked relative out of phone :(

Hey all, firstly, sorry this is a rushed post but I'm hoping I can get some advice and pointed in the right direction. I'll start by saying I'm fairly experienced in tech and with Android.
So, a family member was having problem with her new android phone (Samsung J ... 6, 5 or something, I can find out) so I said I'd just do a factory reset - there was nothing on there she was worried about losing).
Long story short, this new security feature (if stolen) where you can't just factory reset has completely screwed me over. They are not tech orientated and can not remember the original google login they made, and barely half of the security questions to remember the original google account. I just want to cry. What was a basic factory reset has turned out to looking like I've 'bricked' their phone. I obviously haven't but it doesn't look good. I've read there's an APK to skip this google sign in step, and I feel competent to do it, but I feel like things can only get worse by this point. There is still hope to reset the google account, but what is your experience using this skip sign in APK. It sounds too easy, for would be thieves, and I don't trust it much. I'm thinking this has gone far enough, I should just tell her to take it back to the provider (EE UK) She's only had it a month. Any idea if they can do this in store or it'll be sent off. Any other words of advice with this skip sign in APK; pulling hair out, thanks
EDIT: Am I right in thinking I can't contact google any further to get the original account back?

Greetings!
Thank you for using XDA Assist.
Having the correct phone model would be helpful here because there are different methods available for fixing this issue. Google will be of no help whatsoever. You can try to bring the device to an authorized Samsung repair center, if available. Also I do recommend bringing it back to the original place of purchase.
Good luck!
Thanks for your reply and sorry for mine being so slow. I guess I'm on my own with this one, but if you can point me to the most favoured guide for a Samsung J36 (I think that is J3 (6) I would appreciate it.
The APK method seems seems easy enough but I'm really worried it has been patched out, seeing as it's a relatively new phone. The last thing I want to do is make it worse. Could you advise how safe the APK method is? usual disclaimers aside
I went into EE today and they weren't much help; they said there's not much they can do, which I don't believe, if we can prove the phone is from them, only a month ago. Thanks for your help. Stress :S

I haven't seen one for the J3 specifically, as there isn't a specific forum for that model on XDA. May I recommend doing a search to see what turns up. I know that official Samsung repair centers can fix this problem.
Will do, thanks. I wanted to avoid paying for a fix but if it keeps things safe, so be it. I'd have to travel so hopefully they'd do it on the spot. ty

Please help, I am unsure what to do now that I received my Umidigi S2 Pro unlocked phone that I purchased from GearBest and waited a month to receive-- booted it up and ran malwarebytes on it only to learn it has two adware programs built into the system. Norton did not find anything except a KRACK (some sort of Key reboot wifi vulnerability???) risk (not sure if it is on the phone or just an alert for my home wifi?). I thought I was getting a nice smartphone at a good price, but now I am very worried if I can trust such a phone from china-- would it be safe to set up the phone for online banking, for email with my email username and password? Should I just sell the phone on ebay and go back to using my ASUS phone that I bought in the USA where I live? The Umidigi is such a nice looking phone, but if it is a security risk I certainly will not use it, I would then sell it and take the loss and learn the lesson, ugh.
Quicktouch apparently contains the following adware as detected by Malwarebytes: Android/Adware.Xinyinhe.CJ
TouchPal 2017 apparently contains the following adware as detected by Malwarebytes: Android/Adware.Cootek
^^^They are both system apps so they are not so easily removed.
Thoughts, advice?

I bought a new Umidigi phone from an online store, now turns out it seems to be rooted, should I just throw it away or is there any resoanable explanation to why it is like that. Is there anything I can do to be able to use this phone with safety.
Thanks

Did a root checking or antivirus app say it's rooted? I knew these phones have adware & questionable issues around personal data, but didn't think they come rooted. Though maybe some third party with access to phone rooted it, was it sealed when you got it? ( Could also have been installed in factory by unauthorised person or at instructions of Chinese government (though probably only if you or your company is a high value target))
Don't waste your money.
I have Umidigi S2 Pro.
It has very low quality.
The touch screen is very hard to use.
Cheap plastic material with very poor build quality.
The battery real capacity is not 5000mah. The battery is not detectable by battery software. Perhaps only 3000mah
The camera is so blurry. You just get fuzzy pictures.
Too many applications crashed instead of 6GB RAM.
The worst thing it come without any guarantee.
It' nothing but wasting my valuable money.
Can you imagine the fallout for a company, trying to compete in the International Marketplace if just ONE of their products was found to be phishing? In fact it would be commercial suicide in their own countries too.
I have a Umidigi A3, bought for a third of the price of my similar spec Samsung, and I also found that certain apps stated the phone was rooted, but root checkers and superuser software all found this not to be the case. I always rooted my early phones to play around under the hood, but lately certain establishment apps would refuse to work stating security issues with root so I haven't rooted my last couple of phones.. I have had no such problems with my A3. My establishment apps check and wave my little A3 through with a smile. False positive? I'd say likely. The cost of the license to use the latest Google Android OS kind of negates the reasoning behind 'the phish' . I believe the tweaks needed to customise the OS to Umidigi products is what causes these false posies.
And the build quality is superb!! For the price I paid, it may be akin to a Mini in the vast world of mobile communications, but it's deck out with the shiny walnut dashboard and plush seats of a Mini Rolls Royce. Time will tell about it's reliability but so far I don't think I'll ever pay hundreds of pounds for a mobile phone again.
My whole take on this Chinese security question is this.
1st, Google is a bigger (biggest) privacy risk. They can access your phone anytime without you knowing (if they wanted to). But yet no one thinks twice about trusting them, plus most people allow them to save all their passwords and info. But yet it's no concern to most.
2nd, A lot of other phone companies have their internal chips produced in China. And if the Chinese really wanted to spy, it's gonna be built into the hardware.(backdoor) Heck the US government was doing this. Everyone forget?
A lot of these proprietary chips even have access to your internet so they can download their proprietary drivers in the background without your knowledge.
There is no true security. The backbone of the internet was built to share information not secure it. Security starts with you. Everytime you choose to have private information at a convenience, you sacrifice security.
And as far as post 1 which I know is a year old, but for anyone that stumbles across this. The adware that was detected was probably all from TouchPal keyboard. That app is so junk, it even installs apps on your phone. It's always preinstalled on provider phones and such.
Google shouldn't allow these apps to be approved and these companies need to be held accountable for allowing these practices.
Good luck and safe browsing!

Absolutely concur. Thanks very much for the very true statement. And I think especially that what I partially quoted above can't be stressed enough.
Maybe this falls into the same context?
thanks for your reply

HHi, thanks for replying. The bitcoin wallet app said it was rooted, so yeah. But there were other strange things, like the draw lines security lock already is set so that I can't change it or use it. I bought it on aliexpress "new". It came it its' package and everything in it only it had been opened. It was stuck at costumes for a while so it seemed as if they opened it and play with it a bit there, but then after I saw the rooted thing everything us looking phisy.
Honesty, regardless, having this device made me understand once and for all where all the money goes to with those top dollar phones and why it is so worth it. Cause yeah, you kind of have everything... But it all sucks. Screen sucks, camera sucks. Multitasking sucks. Battery sucks. Radiation feel sucks, and seems pretty sure security sucks. So yeah, you kind of have efrything, but the low quality is felt. Daily.
Chinese brand phones cannot be trusted. It's best to buy Japanese or American ones, at least they're more secure in terms of malware and Trojans.
