Question Is there any active development for this device? - Moto G Stylus 5G

I currently have the Cricket model which doesn't allow for unlocking the bootloader, but I love the phone so much I might pick up a 6GB unlocked version if there's development going on in the background somewhere. Stock 11 (on Cricket) is terrible, even after disabling as many apps as possible. If so, what are people working on? Thanks!
Edit: I should clarify -- I mean ROM development.

Not that we know of, everyone seems to be working on GSI, which imo isn't as good as a TWRP & ROM

I dug around, and apparently @Electimon has a group over on Telegram and is working on Lineage. Doubt XDA wants a TG link, but you can find it by looking up electimonrel, has 260 members atm.

Hey! I work on LineageOS Modded and AOSP for this device, i'm planning on releasing builds here at XDA, after its stable.

Super excited about this! Just picked up the 256GB 6GB model in mint condition without a stylus for under $200. The old cricket version is going to come in handy after all, lol

Woo! The pen will finally be joined with a usable phone!
Sarcasm aside, what is the deal with phones these days? I have the 4GB/128GB Cricket model, and I play podcasts on Spotify, while working with Doordash and Uber Eats.
Occasionally, if I'm running both, using GMaps, and have to send a text to a customer, Spotify will stop playing, as if there wasn't enough memory (out of 4 GB!) to support "ALL THOSE" apps! Hell, 4GB is enough to do HEAVY multitasking on a PC. Are we really demanding more of our phones now than we do of our Windows-based systems??

These aren't phones nowadays their computers with a phone function I see these going way beyond a handheld device 10 20 years from now.

Still worth buying as a budget device?

Hi Blaze friends,
I'm looking for a budget device for some family members and am curious if the Blaze still fits the bill. I'll be able to buy them new at $130 off contract and am looking to upgrade from a Galaxy S 4g, mostly because they're having some hardware issues.
My goal is something less than $150 and I think this is the best Android option I'm able to find. I'm mostly considering this or a Lumia 521 (no need to warm me about WP8 ).
Also, if you guys still suggest buying a Blaze, could you also recommend a rock solid ROM (stock is a valid option if y'all say it's good) that won't require regular tech support?
Many thanks from a Nexus/AOKP guy!

I recommend getting this phone! It's amazing. Especially with all the new ROMs we are receiving from the amazing developers on here! A good solid ROM is Dirty Unicorns (my opinion) but it would vary among other users. Always read the bug list though. Its fairly stable now and I'm sure most of the bugs are squashed. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask this spectacular community!

this phone is good and bad.
figure out if you need the size. If you don't want to go larger, this is about the best phone you can find.
There are some restrictions though. This isn't one of the mainstream CyanogenMod phones so doesn't get updates as fast as some others, even older ones. Also since it's been orphaned by Samsung, we probably will have a kernel problem within the next few generations of OS.
Also. The tiny internal storage has been a problem. Mostly this means you have to use a SD card and then install a 3rd party Camera app to allow for storage to the SD card, which can't be done automatically. I'd suggest Snap Camera or Camera JB+ for this (both $).
I have one with a cracked screen that I'm selling for $50. It's on T-Mobile right now though.
I wouldn't pay $130 for it since they are going on Craigslist for about $90 in good or near new shape. But I'm okay buying and selling used and do it regularly so that's a factor.
Overall. I'd go with a SGS II instead of the Blaze if size and the small price difference isn't a big deal for you. The SGSII has similar specs and a larger screen but with better XDA support as well as a lot more people out there with them, so the community is a bit stronger.
Just my not so humble opinion.
Just bought this phone for $130 new from HSN for my mom (her very first smartphone). What's the latest official update for this phone, I know it at least has ICS correct? Is it still stuck on that or has it been officially updated to JB? Thanks guys!

You're stuck on ICS unless you go aftermarket. They've stopped releasing updates for this phone. That said, ICS isn't too shabby.

Regular
I'm in the same boat as mackster in that I bought it on HSN and am now waiting for the shipment... on the bright side it's not for my mom.
I'm not one to spend as mush as I might on a laptop for a phone so this will be a step up from my Exhibit II 4g from two years ago. Faster processor and larger screen... I'm happy with that for $129.00
I've rooted and tried various roms on my Exhibit so I'm scannig the roms availalbe here now. If anyone has already done the heavy lifting I'm open to suggestions for your opinions on the best rom. My needs in order of importance are:
1. STABILITY
2. Battery life
3. Photos (and ability to save to external DS)
4. Bloat removal (in rom if possible)
4. Wi-Fi calling still functioning
5. Root would be nice (i have many apks)
6. Mapping (aka driving directions) works
I see many roms listing problems with the compass and the camera. I guess I would like a newer version of droid but if ICS meets all of my above needs then I'd be perfectly happy with that too.
Anyone have suggestions?
I have a feeling that you should be looking at mature ICS ROMs. I don't have the phone so I can't say for sure, but that's my gut feeling based on your requirements.
If I remember right, you might want to stay on stock ics. Wifi calling is a no-go on jb. Not sure if it's up and running on jb 4.3, but know for sure it's not on 4.1.2.

I don't think WiFi Calling has been ported to any non-stock-based JB ROMs for any devices. Definitely not available for general use.
Thanks for the replies... I don't suppose there's a bloatfree stock ROM like I had found for my Exhibit? Otherwise I guess it's time to dust off Titanium and start freezing/uninstalling bloat

There are several AOSP-based options. I can't vouch for the quality of them so you'll have to play with them to find out. But I'd stick with what seems like mature ICS offerings though.
Where is this thank button... I don't seem to see it.

Praying (and Paying) for Root with Bounty

Coming from the Note 2, Note 3, and Note 4 Developer Edition, I'm hoping the LG V10 can be rooted and have an unlocked bootloader for custom ROMs. If not, I'll be sticking with my Note 4 DE even longer.
Update:

XDA Members,
I have been trying to update the spread sheet to keep people accountable for what they had pledged. If you have installed root using Tungkick's method please donate to him. If you have donated; Thank you for keeping your word! I encourage you all to do what you had promised. Donating the full pledge amount would be very appreciated as well. So far it is looking like Tungkick is well below the estimated value of what you all pledged. Please help make things right and follow through on your end.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DONATED PLEASE PM ME (with your name or email that comes through when you send a Paypal payment AND what XDA user name I should tie that donation to).
When you donate it would be helpful for you to put your XDA member name in the comments.

Yea same here...i will hold out a month or two after it comes out to see how the development scene will become
I kinda wonder if the buyers of this device even care about such ?
verge said v10 is for content creators and g4 is for content consumers. if anything the consumer version is what people will tinker with.
the v10 should have everything you need ottb without having to futz around.
This is isn't a competitor to the note. i'm wondering what the g pro will be like.
Why do you say it's not a competitor to the note? It's certainly a flagship+ type device? Not trying to argue, just want to know your thinking. I've been a note guy since the original, but now with the 5 and the fact that they got rid of sd storage (I'm a big fan of emulator gaming) and the removable battery, I'm shopping around. The V-10 looks to have everything I have with the note 4 (except the s-pen which is rarely used). And the V-10 has some style to it that makes it not look like every other phone out there right now.
I tend to agree, I think this is a competitor to the Note series as well. If the only competition for the Note series are phones with a stylus, that doesn't leave much.
If you don't consider this to be a competitor, just curious as to which phones you belive are?

CVE-2015-6602 is the key for V10 root
Just curious as to what people think are the key reasons for rooting these days.
I have a note 3 and will be looking to upgrade to this when it comes to the UK.
My note 3 is rooted and I did it mainly to get more advance features for Tasker.
Now I very rarely use Tasker so don't think I will be rooting my next phone unless there is a good reason to?
Cheers

Just saying if you don't want, don't do it. OR choose a closed system. There's choice.
Wasn't pointing you personally, just saying my thoughts about it.
Android is a great OS, mainly because you've got a full access to it, and can change/customize almost everything. Not rooting it may be OK for many users, but that's jumping beside the swimming pool. Just my point, as you asked our point about rooting devices...

Hmph.
I'll say this. I have had my LG G3 for over a year and a half, that is longer than I have kept any phone since I began my Android venture with the G1. I had the G3 rooted for about 3 weeks. I have always had my devices rooted. I'll say this - though the option to root and unlock the bootloader would be very nice, I have found myself very fond of the LG UI - for a manufacturer UI skin, LG's takes the cake. Far less memory hungry than sense or TouchWiz, and the phone remains very snappy.
I have no need for root with the power of these devices now, the leaps and bounds in camera software, etc.
I think the software on these phones, while skin dependent can slow it down, has moved leaps and bounds past that of 3 years ago. There are some useful aspects of it. For instance, one major reason I and most others are looking heavily at this phone is the camera - well I have news for you if you didn't know - most of that is software driven, software that is not available on an AOSP based ROM. Sure, the phone might be a hair faster, but if you can't use the beautiful 16 MB camera on the back to it's full potential (The highlight of an amazing phone) is it even worth it?
Now, the answer might be yes to you, and it might even be a yes for me when I get the phone in my hands (if, lol), but I would bet that I am not alone in my stance, and I'm sure that there are others here that used to be flashaholics that no longer have a true need for it.
Of course, if you are using a Samsung device or HTC, sure I see a need because that OS skin is horrendous. BUT, with a phone with this hardware, with a fairly light skin, and from what I can see amazing camera software/hardware... Do you need to root this thing?
I suppose you can justify root without bootloader, however again, I do not need it thus probably won't go there.
I am not bashing you, simply stating where I come from now, and how my thoughts and needs have changed on the issue of ROM flashing in the last year with my still amazing G3.
I am only now looking for a new device because I felt this year would bring amazing devices... So far, the only two really worth looking at are the Nexus 6P - which is only available in the states through Google/Huwai, and this V10. Maybe the OnePlus 2. Maybe.
Cheers.
I'm using Xperia Z2, since mid 2014. I'm still on stock based firmware. As you stated, camera, as well as audio performance, are better with stock based roms than with aosp based roms. But there's many rom cookers taking stock brand firmware as base, but add many features, or great optimizations.
Even my wife, who doesn't know anything about android and OS stuffs, needs root. Why? Simply because there's always a bunch of bloatware, or apps not needed because you're using one for years doing the same thing in a better/more suitable way.
I agree that unlocking the bootloader isn't so useful anymore, just a flash and test junky thing. But root is so helpful in many ways. Just one thing why I couldn't use phone without root : all those terrible ads everywhere, on the web and on YouTube. Soooo annoying. Used my phone 2 weeks before rooting, I was going crazy just about ads here, ads there, ads everywhere!
Edit : installing an alternative launcher already keep you away from most of worst things of "skins" from brands.

Precisely. I understand and echo everything you point out. I have always used Nova Launcher.
Yes, bloatware is a problem. However, besides that, I really don't have a need for root in general, it's just a fun thing to have and mess with. I don't like messing with my phone much anymore since I have important things on my plate, calendar, phone calls, etc.
I don't understand why people say they love ad blocker, I haven't had an issue with ads, in fact I don't see many AT ALL, and I don't have mine rooted...
I see the most in the TapaTalk app, other than that nothing really...
Root saves me the $30 a month extra I don't have to pay Sprint for Wi-Fi tether: that's reason enough for me to root all my devices.
I have always rooted every one of my devices dating back to my og. That said, it seems it's getting harder and harder to gain root on some of these new devices. Doesn't Xposed work on non rooted devices? If so, won't that along with a new launcher satisfy the craving for root? I'm asking because my next phone will probably be the V10 and I'm fearful root might not be gained.

So I'm a noob when it comes to root/flashing. I did update my Verzion Nexus 6 though.. Thinking of getting this since they are cheap enoufe on Ebay but only if I can get a stockish rom up and running on it. Is there good noob friendly guides for doing this? My use case for the tablet is movies/youtube/internet browsing. Seems like it's the only "big" tablet that is affordable.

Just to ditch touchwiz and have a newer OS
It comes -- or can be safely updated -- to stock Lollipop. And it is actually quite nice, touchwiz and all. That didn't stop me from rooting and installing the CM 12 version of Android.... the fellah that's worked on that is also working on a Marshmallow CM version for our tablets. But it ain't here yet.
As far as the tablet goes... sweetness. You should sort out what you're gonna use it for, and if the list makes sense, jump.
Blessings on this Good Friday.
I'm of a mind to ask "why root?" What little you gain seems unbalanced to potential issues you create. I am a power user of this tablet and while there are some minor benefits to rooting (minor enough not to bother), the first consideration out the gate, even before getting it is 'whatcha gonna do with it?" You little list of things you want to do is no problem for this tablet "as is". I would be primarily concerened about getting a clean bright display, no dead pixels, excellen response to touch and pen, reliably long battery life.
Its like buying a sports car. You want to play mechaninc and endlessly tweak it or you want to get out there and drive? I am primarily driver oriented. Yes, if down the road you want to play mechanic, you can. But in the mean time, don't waste time on time consuming operations that will not help with the driving experience that much.
Its all about priorities. LIfe is short.

Oh the eternal discussion on locked bootloader...
I do really own my device, physical and software wise, luckily for me I had it unlocked for free but had I not had the chance to be one of the 200 people that got it from the test the "shady dude" here in XDA, I would definitely pay the $5 to grab it!
There's not much development for this device, in my own humble opinion, because this is a fairly new brand(HMD), resurfacing from an era before the smartphones of today(Nokia/Symbian), NOT just because of the factory locked bootloader!
Btw, you can get similar devices for a lot less money with unlocked everything!
There's a way to do it, it's up to you only to decide what's worth your coins!

@grimyhr I think you didn't get my point at all..
Fyi I had all these Nokia phones:
Older Technology:
2160 (TDMA, first Nokia I got)
6120 (TDMA) and 6180 (CDMA)
6225i (CDMA)
GSM Dumbphones:
1100 (First phone with a flashlight!)
Asha 202
GSM Symbian:
3210 (first GSM handset)
6600 (first Symbian I had back in the day)
6800 (hated that split keyboard)
5200 xpress music
Practical GSM Smartphones:
E62 and E61i (both still in use as SIP phones for their wifi and great battery stand-by time)
N97 (Still in use today as an in-car Bluetooth player(32gb internal+ 32gb on SDcard :silly: ) and NDrive when Waze on Android goes haywire w/o data connection)
N810 Internet Tablet (still in use as the media/streaming player paired to a Bluetooth speaker for BBQ and it is the only Maemo device I ever used)
All of that trouble I had compiling that list may show how I appreciate Nokia's phones and that was a dive into the past!
Nowadays people don't know how cumbersome was to handle and install apps and ringtones (lol) on their phones, but since then it all got easier (big thanks to XDA Developers!)
I meant to say that HMD/Nokia is a new brand on Android Phones. We all know how awesome Symbian was but the Nokia/Windows Mobile phones tossed all that into the trash in my opinion (Sorry WinMo supporters). We know Nokia/WinMo had great camera/media capabilities and awesome Nokia build strength but they were definitely not good app-wise.
As @kosmatyj noted, there is a small base of owners with the new HMD/Nokia brand devices and even less with their devices unlocked. That may change when the manufacturer releases their official way to unlock our phones or when someone releases a tool or tutorial in DIY fashion (check this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57752632&postcount=1). While neither of those things immediately solve our problem, the last resort is just a $5 bill.
Regarding your question over similar devices, I meant similar in processing power, not the exact type of CPU. I have the UMIDIGI Z Pro that has a ****ty stock rom, but with root and xposed I have it exactly for what I need at 1/3 of the price I've paid on my Nokia 8 TA-1004 in my country.

But it isn't.
Probably the manufacturer has something to hide or there is a leak of info howto unlock. That is also unreliable.
No Nokia for me....

Probably they are hiding something, like tracking what the user does on his device. Twice after the activation of the phone I got a popup asking questions, no detectable (at the time) app related.
Definitely there is leaked info on ways to unlock! People are making money of it

US version: One 5G Ace

Compare Motorola Moto G 5G vs. Motorola One 5G Ace - GSMArena.com

It will be available in US next week for $400 (6/128)
Nice. Hopefully this device picks up in popularity now that it's being launched elsewhere. It's woefully ignored considering what it offers.
Just pulled the trigger on this from Amazon to run on Verizon. I'm expecting great things for as much as I loved my Nexus 6
i have the Moto one ace 5g US unlocked version straight off the shelf from Best Buy and the bootloader unlock is not supported by the moto portal so i guess we are SOL for root or any other development yeah?

Mine is also bought from Best Buy
Bootloader unlock request is same as other models.
Make sure those 5 lines from fastboot oem get_unlock_code is a complete one line (no missed character)
Giving myself buyers remorse and it hasn't even arrived yet! I currently have a Samsung Note8 (not rooted) and I'm comparing specs . . . no QC(QuickCharge) on the Motorola, lower dpi resolution, usb 2.0 vs 3.1 on the note? no mention of gorilla glass?
Those of you with the 5g ACE, what did you come from, and how is it comparing?
It does take 18 watts USB-PD

Coming from a Xiaomi mi mix 2s. Phone has great specs in comparison to this one. I strictly also knew this is a budget device, and for the price I can't complain. With a smooth ui and root, it's a simple phone that does what I personally need it for. The camera in this phone blows away the mix.
The wireless charge was also a feature I thought I'd miss but I just don't, and the battery lasts forever in comparison. I used to fall for the pretty colors the displays on the big brands show off. Yes, they are nice, but after a year they look like any other screen out there anyways. This display is perfectly fine, does well in all lights and is quite large.
Also the feature sets the big name brands threw out there of course are cool, but when it comes down to it the less BS that is on the phone the better it works. Plus when I bought those devices I would be unlocking and flashing ROMs anyways to remove all that bloat.
This phone is not a gaming rig, it is a basic smartphone that has decent specs. Overall I cannot complain, my old phone has much, much better hardware and a newer OS, but this phone is perfect. Only root needed with the Android One ui experience. Don't get me wrong, if developers pick this thing up I'm game to ROM it, but it just doesn't need it. 5/10 if you're looking for a flagship, but 10/10 if you're looking for a budget device.
Its mid march and not a single AOSP ROM. I am so tempted seeing this phone going for a steal on swappa in great condition, but i need AOSP. i add F-Droid and use mostly FOSS Apps. Aurora store covers the play store apps i must absolutely have. But i need AOSP because i want no play services, no google nothing.
Hopefully Motorola will release source code for G 5G and Ace, and we need developers to make Lineage

No, what we need is full R/W access after root. I have yet to be able to move anything around thanks to this new crap with Android 10. If the Devs are going to do anything hopefully its give us a Android Pie Rom.

I know thjis is a old post, but did you try using their format tool on the motodev portal for formatting the unlock_data string? I jumped to the same conclusion with my moto one action, however in the end it was user error on my part.
Ive had my Ace for about 12 hours, and have:
Unlocked the bootloader
Flashed HavokOS
Flashed Lineage 18.1
Flashed Android 11
Rooted\Magisked\Riru'ed\EdXsposed\GravityBox'ed
..and the phone has cooperated like a champ. I'm intentionally hard on phones, for hey thats how you learn! That and heh the wonderful folks of XDA ;-)
