Hi all,
I think it's since the last security update that I'm having really annoying wifi issues with my Note 20 Ultra.
My Phone works well, but when I open some apps over wifi, I have wait times of up to 60 seconds or more for the app to load. When I load over LTE, the app loads immediately. Or if I load the app over WLAN using the browser (Bison app), it also loads within seconds.
With my second phone, a Motorola, which is on the same WLAN network, the app loads within seconds.
I've noticed that this happens mostly with apps that require a certain level of security (e.g. "Chrome Remote Desktop", "Bison app"). It's nice when something is obviously checked when the page is called, but the wait time is really not normal anymore.
Does anyone else have a problem like this?
Not completely unimportant... WLAN 250 Mbit (measured)... so really fast ;-)
For anyone interested, it was IPV6. The catch here had slowed down my internet via WiFi so much. After I switched off IPv6 in the phone everything is ok again .... fast internet with every app

If I run an app that accesses the internet after the phone has been idle for a while it frequently just sits there spinning for 15-30 sec or so before it starts downloading. The download speed itself is quite fast. This initial pause happens with many apps. Once it's working ok things are snappy until it sits idle again for a while. I have it set for never disconnect from wifi, and I'm using a fixed IP address (had it set for DHCP previously and no difference). I have no problems with the 3 computers running on the same router, and my ISP connection speed is very good. I have 4 bars on the wifi strength icon, and little if any death grip issue. Running pure stock, not even rooted.
Anyone else seen this or have any ideas what would cause it?
Edit: Fixed by setting phone and router DNS to Google servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)
Yeah I got too. I just turn data off and on again, that always do the trick.
Tried that trick and it did help, so good to know. But still an annoying bug and hassle to exit app, toggle wifi, and restart app. I guess it gives me something to do instead of just staring at the paused screen.
Hehe, but it will wear off. Mine is kinds stopped right now
So, is this happening to everyone or just a small percentage? Asking because the answer could determine if it's something on my phone or router I need to change, versus a HTC/Android bug. I've submitted a HTC bug report, but from past experience their tech support is less than worthless.
I used set dns from the market and opted for the google servier settings.
I used this app because I was getting pauses when loading up the market. Using the above app pretty much solves the delay issue for me.

Is Set DNS different than manually setting it under the wifi advanced settings? I have set mine manually to Google DNS and so far it's working better, but will take some time to see if it lasts. I'll update either way.
Thanks for the tip.
Update:
Setting DNS to Google DNS didn't solve the problem. Still getting very long pause on initial internet access after sitting idle for 15 minutes or so. Toggling wifi off/on does fix it, but that should not be necessary.
Is this common or rare? Really would like to know if it's a known phone bug, or my specific phone/router/ISP.
Based on so few responses I concluded it must be something in my setup. Ended up changing both the phone and my router's DNS to Google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), which appears to have solved the problem. Oddly setting just the phone's DNS didn't fix it, it took changing the router as well. Also, it's not clear to me why toggling the wifi on the phone resolved the pause issue temporarily each time if the DNS server being used was the issue. But, if it's fixed I'll take it.
Thanks for the advice that did end up leading to a solution.
Hi,
I was troubleshooting poor VoIP quality on my LAN when I discovered our upstream usage was a constant 300KB/s (yes, that's Bytes). I tried turning off all of our PC's one at a time but the bandwidth utilization didn't change. However, when I turned off WiFi on my Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE (Unlocked, Rooted, 77.8.14.XT897.Sprint.en.US) upstream bandwidth dropped to zero. I switched the WiFi back on but the bandwidth stayed at or near zero. Can anyone think of why the phone would use that much upstream when idle? Could this be malware?
By no means a dev or super knowledgeable but throwing some ideas out there: could be Google apps syncing, any online games, updates, email blah blah blah. Have you checked to see if data (3/4g) is doing anything while idle?
None of the Above
I don't have any games installed nor do I have Google apps. If it were some type of sync, nothing I do on the phone produces that much data, all I have is emails and some Evernotes.
3G and 4G are disabled when WiFi is enabled, so that's not the issue. Don't forget, this is UPSTREAM I'm talking about, not downstream.
It stopped immediately when I turned off the WiFi and didn't continue on the mobile data connection. I re-enabled the WiFi a minute later and it didn't reappear.
It's just bizarre.
It could be that something got stuck in the process of the phone's normal operation. For example, perhaps the phone was busy sending a (large) email when you transitioned from one connection type to the next, and due to the transition, the email app "forgot" to release the 300KB/s uplink. Or something else along those lines, but the app is closed by the system mid-process, thus the app never gives the radio the command to sever the upload connection (until you manually cycled the wifi).
In all honesty, though, this is just my best guess, so take it with a grain of salt.
Also, if you're running the stock ROM, I read that Motorola set up their phones to check in every 9 seconds or something crazy like that for whatever reason. Don't remember exactly for what, though. One of the main reasons I switched to Carbon.
So... Ive moved into a new condo and got a new router, high speed internet etc. Everything works great on ALL my devices, 2 other cells, 2 laptops etc etc.
The issue Im having is on my N5.. and N5 only. Apps like Twitter and Instagram will refresh normally once.... then when I back out of the app reopen and try to refresh again, neither will refresh unless I use the square button to "kill the app" from my rolodex and reopen the app.
I just get the swirling circle indicating it's trying to refresh.... but wont. All other apps work fine without issue, though FB will sometimes lag a few seconds, but update normally.
It is EXTREMELY frustrating and has been happening for well over a month now and it is only on this phone.
note: the wifi connection is perfect, the speeds are sky high, and the pings are beautiful.
I cant figure out what is causing this.
Do you use anything like Tasker? It may be an app that keeps track of your location? Or it could be WiFi?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
So 3 things prevent this phone from being perfect for me.
#1 Lack of NFC (but I knew about it so nothing I can do).
#2 Bad Wifi speeds at 5Ghz
#3 GPS not working until reboot issues.
So for the Wifi issue, from the same location that I was getting over 100Mb downloads from my Note 10.1 and 60-70 on my Xperia Z Ultra, this phone was barely making it to 25-30. That created issues as it will start buffering even watching 1080p youtube videos.
Switching to 2.4 was more stable but barely enough speed.
So I went into the developer options and dsiabled the option that says " Use Legacy DHCP client" and now my speeds are over 60Mb from the same location. No more buffering or slow app downloads!
Not sure if it will vary since the devices picky but if you are having a similar issue, then it is worth trying.
I am currently testing a couple of things for the GPS to see if it helps. At least this morning, it was working but we shall see if it works tomorrow and so on.

Thanks for posting, and keep us updated especially on the GPS issue!
I have problems with this setting on wlan now. If there is a strong unknown 5 ghz wlan in the near and I want to stay in a known 2,4 wlan.
My x2 tries to swap to the stronger and faster wlan and recognizes that it does not know a password for it. Then it will return to my known wlan and login automatically.
This happens regulary after a few seconds.
At home I have one 5 ghz wlan and 2 with 2,4 ghz. All have the same SSID and password. So no problem there.
Any ideas to force my device to stay in the 2,4 wlan on the other location with the unknown network?
If I switch back to the 'old' lollipop dhcp client setting the problem goes away.
It just tests once the new network and if the password is not available, it stops checking this again and again.
On my nexus 6p this problem is not present, so there could be a solution for the x2, too.

Huawei is able to find a solution to this if they wanted to and send an update, so it's disappointing that they make no efforts to do so!
Particularly with Facebook, it becomes very slow, minutes to load screens, when I do a reboot it is fast again, what is the problem, what else can I do
Anyone
Why is internet very slow, much slower than with the PC, using the same wifi
Cant say why but I do notice even on the mobile data Facebook at times will not load pictures no matter how long I leave it there to load. I can run a internet speed CK and the speeds are not slow at all. I have to close out the FB app and restart.

Check your router's wifi area for the encryption it's using. If it's TKIP or TKIP+AES, change it to AES. (I don't use Facebook, but my wife did, and I had to do that about 3 years ago, when her phone would take half an hour to load the first picture, and never finished loading a video. Don't ask me why, but something in there, Android, Facebook, something, doesn't seem to like TKIP.)
Did it, AES only, first test works fast, lets see later, thank you :good:

I am very glad I insisted and you answered, I would never fix it otherwise, Facebook and others working fast now :good:
Good, I'm glad. It only took me about 3 days to figure out. (Okay, to be honest, after I'd looked at everything else, I just figured, "It probably won't do any good, but let's try it.")
Now if some working network engineer would just get in there and figure out why ... YouTube works fine with TKIP, so it's not just that TKIP slows video down. The compression used by the server?.
It was very slow opening Facebook, changing pages, opening online photos, the whole thing
