So 3 things prevent this phone from being perfect for me.
#1 Lack of NFC (but I knew about it so nothing I can do).
#2 Bad Wifi speeds at 5Ghz
#3 GPS not working until reboot issues.
So for the Wifi issue, from the same location that I was getting over 100Mb downloads from my Note 10.1 and 60-70 on my Xperia Z Ultra, this phone was barely making it to 25-30. That created issues as it will start buffering even watching 1080p youtube videos.
Switching to 2.4 was more stable but barely enough speed.
So I went into the developer options and dsiabled the option that says " Use Legacy DHCP client" and now my speeds are over 60Mb from the same location. No more buffering or slow app downloads!
Not sure if it will vary since the devices picky but if you are having a similar issue, then it is worth trying.
I am currently testing a couple of things for the GPS to see if it helps. At least this morning, it was working but we shall see if it works tomorrow and so on.

I have problems with this setting on wlan now. If there is a strong unknown 5 ghz wlan in the near and I want to stay in a known 2,4 wlan.
My x2 tries to swap to the stronger and faster wlan and recognizes that it does not know a password for it. Then it will return to my known wlan and login automatically.
This happens regulary after a few seconds.
At home I have one 5 ghz wlan and 2 with 2,4 ghz. All have the same SSID and password. So no problem there.
Any ideas to force my device to stay in the 2,4 wlan on the other location with the unknown network?
If I switch back to the 'old' lollipop dhcp client setting the problem goes away.
It just tests once the new network and if the password is not available, it stops checking this again and again.
On my nexus 6p this problem is not present, so there could be a solution for the x2, too.

Huawei is able to find a solution to this if they wanted to and send an update, so it's disappointing that they make no efforts to do so!

I just wrote a long post detailing my problem and lost it all the instant I hit the 'submit' button because the forum timed out. AHHH. I'm sure some of you have been there and know the feeling!
Anyway, I just came across the revelation today that there is something seriously wrong with the download speed of my Infinity tablet. For as long as I can remember, I have had trouble watching Youtube videos. Occasionally, they would play fine. But more often than not, the streams would constantly pause every couple of seconds to buffer -- making the videos unwatchable. This behavior was the same on all the channels I visited. I don't watch Youtube videos that often, but it has finally irritated me enough to investigate it.
According to my tablet's wifi settings, my link speed is 39Mbps from my usual location. I brought the tablet to the same room as the router (an Asus RT-16) and the link speed increased to 65Mbps, but this did not solve the constant buffering problem. I then performed a factory reset and left my tablet clean, only downloading updates for the stock apps including Youtube. Unfortunately, the problem remained.
Now this is where things get interesting. I have a 12Mbps internet connection. I went to speedtest.net on my desktop PC and it reported 11.54Mbps down and 1.48Mbps up. Quite reasonable. Then I downloaded the Speedtest app onto my Infinity. Even with a 65Mbps link speed, I could not achieve more than 2.02Mbps down and 1.57Mbps up on the same server I tested my desktop. I then tried other nearby servers, and all them were between 1.65Mbps and 2.0Mbps down. 2.02Mbps was the fastest download speed I could achieve.
For a comparison, I then ran Speedtest on my Galaxy Nexus phone. It achieved 9.33Mbps down and 1.61Mbps up.
Any ideas why my Infinity can only reach a download speed of 2.02Mbps, even with a 65Mbps link speed?

I just downloaded the app Speedtest.net and ran a test. The results are 15526kbps download and 2806kbps upload. I used to have that problem with the stock rom. Currently, I am using custom rom and some tweaks with the tablet's network. It does not have the buffering problem any more. So far, I have no problem with streaming movies or youtube unless three or more devices sharing the same network in my house. My current settings on my tablet are Cromi X V4.6.6 and Hundsbuah V3.0.6 OC CPU at 1.8G all cores, UV about 35mV, and GPU at 700M. To answer your question, there are a lot of things could affect the network. These are a few major problems: the buffersize setting, low RAM memory, slow I/O, and other poor factory setting came with the TF700T. There are a lot of good information scattering everywhere on this website. With some research, you can fine tune your device. Good luck.

Thanks for the detailed response LMK. To make things more confusing, I just re-ran the speedtest about 5 hours after the first series of tests and the download speed is now 9.81Mbps down and 1.64Mbps up. So this is an intermittent issue which explains why I can sometimes watch Youtube videos without issue. I have been sorely tempted to unlock my device, but I have a stuck pixel and I was worried other hardware issues might creep up during the warranty period.

I unlocked my device after a few day of purchase. I never attempt to tweak with stock rom. Therefore, I don't know if I can help you further. There are a lot of experts on this site. They will give you some good advises on this topic. If you some how can access to build.prop and init.d, those area where I tweaked my network. Maybe, you can access those files with rooted. You probably can find some answer with searching on this site.
Could be RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). Look around your house for wireless devices in the same freq range as your wifi router. Usually 2.4ghz. Cordless phones, baby room monitors, wireless speakers and sometimes microwave ovens. If you have any of these types of devices unplug them all then run your speed tests again several time to the same site. I get good speeds on mine using the speedtest app. Usually 19-21 mb on a U-Verse 24mb connection. But I had problems when I installed a rear wireless speaker adapter from Radio Shack for my surround sound system. It knocked me down to 3-4 mb. I beat my brains out (the few I have) for days until I unplugged ALL wireless devices (not PCs) and then one at a time plugged them back up running speedtests at the addition of each device. Then I discovered the RS wireless adapter was the culpret. Lucky for me it has a switch for three different channels. Changing the channel on it cured my problem. Placing my router on wireless channel 4 helped even more. Neighbors on either side of me are on ch 11. I also suspect the RS device was just about there too.
Just a passing thought. I hope you get your problem solved.
BTW My TF700 is completely stock.

Perplexing.
I have this bufferng situation also, if that's what is the culprit.
Solved my up/dn problem by removing my access point
I am 65mbps 13-24 mbps but can not stream YouTube etc. Plays a bt then the hourglass.
I think wi-fi interference would hurt the 65mbps connection speed not the upload/download speed.
I have a linksys router and the special Linksys modem built for Comcast system.
I can only look at system or apps conflict as the culprit but damn if I can find it.
I have been CROMi since Scot's incarnation.

Strange. On my stock TF700, with a good 65Mbps connection, with Speedtest I see 19Mbps down and 5Mbps or so up, about the same as my Nexus 7 and laptop. Are you using the same test server for all of your tests?
Just received my Nexus 5 today and I'm noticing some strange connectivity issues while on WiFi. Some apps would complain network is unavailable, Facebook would load with no pictures, etc. This happens randomly, sometimes after few minutes others - an hour(s). Rebooting the phone or even cycling WiFi off/on usually recovers it, until it happens again. Cellular data works fine all the time. It can't be the WiFi network I'm connecting to as I have a myriad of devices that have worked and continue working without any problems.
I tried 3 other WiFi networks (different routers) with different configurations of encryption as well no encryption, switching between 5GHz, 2.4GHz, no matter what, problem occurs sooner or later.
Noticed on Google support forums few users describing exactly the same issue, surprised I didn't find reports here on XDA. Maybe not many people got their phones yet.
Anyone else getting the same "treatment" from their new Nexus 5?

I am seeing exactly the same thing. Wifi will work great, then all of a sudden, nothing. Stays that way for a couple of minutes, then all of a sudden it works again.
How many bars does the sifi icon show ?
Number of bars doesn't matter. I can have full bars sitting a meter from the router and issue would happen anyways.
I tried playing with WiFi optimizations in advanced settings to no avail unfortunately. Hopefully this is a bug that Google can quickly fix with a software update

Yes, my N5 started doing the same on my home wifi connections (using Apple's Airport Extreme 2.4/5GHz router).
The Playstore or Youtube apps would not display images or take forever. When I switched wifi off those apps worked fine.
I got it working again when I "forgot" my wifi setting for the 2.4 and 5Ghz channels then reconnected to the 2.4. I'll let that run for a day or so then try activating the 5Ghz.

Nah. Its no connection issue. We can connect easily and have full signal bars, but still no connection randomly for a couple of minutes.

Hmm - no I don't think that's the one. Phone connects fine, just over time randomly does this thing with the connectivity issues.

I looked in Setting/Wifi/Advanced ...
I turned OFF "Avoid Poor Connections"
and everything seems to work the way i want ( when i tell it to go to Wifi, it does that )

I too am having terrible wifi issues on my new Nexus 5. But mine are different from those described here I think. Whenever I cycle through the wifi, turn it off and on again it doesn't fix the problem (not temporarily and ofc not permanently)
When browsing the web, the play store and mostly everything it works great and is very fast, BUT when downloading or updating an app the wifi speed is practically non-existant.
Sometimes showing that it will take 25 hours to download a 25mb app :S
This while my Galaxy Nexus on the same wifi network is as speedy as ever.
I have tried factory resetting my Nexus 5, I have cleared the cache and data of the play services app and of the play store app, I have tried changing the wifi bands (from auto, to 5 to 2.4 and back to auto), I have turned off the wifi optimization, but none of those things helped. I even tried some DNS HSPC wifi settings thingy I read here
That didn;t help either.
I have unplugged my router and replugged it in but that didn't help either.
I literally had to leave my brand new Nexus 5 downloading all night just so that it could install the apps I wanted on it. So far for playing around with the phone on day 1
What makes it even weirder is that occasionaly the wifi issues resolve itself and I can get good download speeds for several seconds or sometimes up to a few minutes, but then right after it is straight back to crap speeds. Some other reported that only while making a portion of the map available offline in Google Maps their app download speeds were great, but that didn't work for me either.
I don't know what to do and if it is a hardware issue or a software issue. Please help me.

I reconfigured my router to advertise 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as DNS servers for the DHCP and now for over 24 hours I haven't experienced the disconnection issue.
If your router cannot be reconfigured, try assigning static IP settings and Google's DNS to see if it helps.
I still believe that's a software bug on the phone, we can't blame a device (the router) that has worked for years and works fine with everything else but the Nexus 5, being at fault.

I currently can't reconnect to my Wi-Fi at home as it's stuck showing the last scan I did some 40 miles away at a shopping centre earlier today.
Of course none of these networks are now present, yet all mine are shown as not found!
Guessing a reboot will fix it as toggling Wi-Fi didn't. Mobile data is working fine.

Not as tech as I want to be, so could you explain to me what the difference is in setting the DNS to Google's instead of routers? I have no idea what DNS is/does so what happens when you point it soemwhere else?

DNS stands for Domain Name Service. What it basically does is to translate those easy to remember names such as www.Google.com to the actual numeric address (also called IP address) of the server that serves that site on the Internet. Home routers almost always sport built-in DNS service to speed up name translation requests from internal devices. What I figured is going on on the nexus 5 is it "doesn't seem to like" some DNS servers. Works fine with some, doesn't with others. What happens is at one point, for whatever reason, it stops being able to translate names to addresses and as result "decides" there is no working connection as it fails to connect to the corresponding servers. Google hosts publicly available DNS servers with the easy to remember IP addresses of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 which apparently Nexus 5 doesn't have problem working with. Once it gets "instructed" to use them instead router's, everything works fine.
At least that's what I figured is going on so far.

Thanks, but that wouldn't fix my issue right, because it doesn't explain why only play store downloads are terribly slow while the rest works fine.
Gave it a shot and at first it seemed to work, but after a short while the problem re-arose
DNS has nothing to do with weak or lost WIFI connections...
You can be perfectly connected, at full n speed to a WIFI AP without getting proper acces to Internet : THIS can DNS isue.
But in no way a DNS isue can leads to lost or very weak WIFI signal.
2 solutions are possible with Nexus 5 :
- WIFI module has the same badly coded shape as camera one...
- its hardware related wich, no need to say, could be the worst case...
I am having the same issue since day one. In fact it just occurred as I was replying to this thread. Mostly occurs when the phone comes out of sleep mode. However it will occur often and at random.

Hi, when I download something with my PC/Nexus 5 I usually get download speeds of about 11mbits, but when I try to download files from the Play Store/the Browser on my OPO I have download speeds of ~2mbits... If I download for example 4 files at the same time with the browser it goes to 8mbit... It cant be the fault of the download server, because it gives me full download speed on my other devices...
Anyone who has encountered the same problems/who knows a fix?

same... Speed test on my one is just slow... I just got it today compared to other wifi or just data transfer seems slow
Change the TCP Congestion Algorithm on your phone, search on how to do it. My wifi speeds are perfectly fine, getting 80Mb/s+ on my wireless n router.

I had the same issue. You have to go to settings, WiFi and then click on advanced WiFi and uncheck WiFi Optimization.
Turned WiFi optimization off and back in business.
Now to figure out proper network settings. I find the phone not on 4g when it should be

Hi, I know the thread is old but my download speeds are slow with my OPO. And just with my OPO. (Iphone, Ipad, Former HTC One M8 works fine)
I realised it with the Facebook App and in the Google Play Store.
When I open the Store and go e.g. to games section, it shows me the games apps but not their pictures. If I turn off WiFi it works well.
Same in Facebook, I can read the comments but can't see the pictures. Again, turning off WiFi and using my mobile connection works fine.
I turned off the optimization, but it didn't help.
It increased the download speed (Speedtest App from Ookla) to 25 Mbits (from 12 with optimization) but the surfing problem remained the same..no pictures in Google Play Store e.g.
Im getting 40 Mbits with my Ipad 3 (without losing any) and 60 mbits with my Notebook.
I restartet the phone (shut down, wait 10 sec, turn on), turn off and on the wifi optimization, checked my WiFi-Channel with "WiFi Analyzer".
When i turned on the flightmode and then turned on only WifI, I got 55 Mbit download! My connection worked fine for a few minutes and went back to 12 Mbit (with optimization) and 25 Mbit (without optimization)
How can I fix this issue? Surfin with WiFi at home is not possible like that, even when I'm getting 25 Mbit as downloadspeed, which would be more then fine to surf on the phone..

It's worth checking, take a look into Settings -> Performance -> per-app profiles. Make sure it's unticked.
With that option enabled I had maximum download/upload speed up to 5Mbps and it was driving me crazy, I was thinking of selling 1+. Anyway, disabling per-app profiles saved the day and download speed was as on N5.

This is more of a question to those people who have knowledge on Wi-Fi router configurations, but I am really hoping maybe somebody has experienced this and found a solution.
Probably the reason why I haven't found a "solution" (in quotes since my Wi-Fi is not really broken) is because I don't know how to word this correctly so that a Google search can be successful so I'll try to explain myself as best as I can.
Here is my problem:
My home's Wi-Fi seems to be having this issue where it takes a while to connect to servers (or at least, that's what I think is going on)
Once it establishes a connection to a server, it seems to run fine there on out.
For example:

This is a game called "Shadowgun Deadzone", a multi-player game. When I'm on Wi-Fi, notice how it gets stuck on "Authentication in progress" for more than a minute?
Later on in the video, I close it, turn off my Wi-Fi and re-open the game and it only takes SECONDS to get to the same screen with my carrier's network.
No, my internet is not slow. Web-page browsing and watching videos is as expected from a 10 mbps internet speed and also playing the game mentioned runs excellent once I get it to connect, only on things like this game is where it takes a while to establish an "initial" connection to the servers
What do I mean with "things like this"? Well, WhatsApp is something that to my knowledge also connects to a server to send images and media, right?

This example is a little bit less clear, but it also seems that connecting to the "server" takes twice as long than if I do it with my carrier's network.
So here's what I know:
1. It's not device specific. This happens with any cellphone using things like what I mentioned above.
2. Not the device's fault either since I play this exact game on my aunt's house and it connects fast as expected
3. Router firewall is deactivated.
4. I've also got a Nintendo 3DS, doesn't take as long to connect to Nintendo Network and play online
5. I've tried labeling my cellphone as "game console" (same as my 3DS) on the router settings, but it doesn't help, it changes nothing
6. This "problem" doesn't exist on web browsing, downloading stuff, Youtube, and a few minor things
I know the fastest solution probably is to get a new router, which I will do in due time, but I'm really hoping to skip that step if I can. This is really bugging me and rather than avoiding this by buying a new router I want to learn what is a possible cause and fix it. I'm pretty sure learning how to deal with this could be helpful in the future.

This feels like a DNS issue. Some devices initial connection working fine and others not could be a DNS caching issue.
Clear the cache of all devices then try to connect to a site one at a time and time them. If they are all around the same speed after clearing the cache then it's probably a DNS thing.
I wonder if a cell phone gets a domain resolved on mobile, caches it, then use the cache when on wifi instead of making a new query. Just a shot in the dark

I will certainly give this a try.
Yes, it's Wi-Fi exclusive. Only at my home's Wi-Fi, because I've played this game at other places via Wi-Fi and I don't have this problem so what you suggest might not work. I'm almost certain there must be something wrong with this Wi-Fi router, some configuration getting in the way.
Download something like FCC Speed Test that shows more than up and down, specifically things like dropped packets. Run it three times on the same device at both locations and compare. Have you checked the routers logs for anything out of the ordinary?

For some reason this app "FCC Speed Test" is showing as incompatible with all my devices, I really hope it doesn't need some kind of special Wi-Fi chip that makes this app work. The "newest" device I have is a Note 3. Went ahead and downloaded the apk file.
I'll get that done today and post the results to see if you can see the problem more clearly.
I am really not a person that knows much about networking and technical details. I just know the VERY basic things.
Things like how to change my router password, view who is using my Wi-Fi signal and block them via a Mac address. The VERY basic stuff. So I wouldn't be able to detect anything unusual in the router logs

I will probably have these results in a few hours since I'm at work (I will also test this at my work's Wi-Fi as I also don't have a problem here. Not that I play this game at work but I've given it a test and it doesn't have the same problem as my home's Wi-Fi)

Unfortunately both places (my house and my aunt's house) stats look exactly the same. Both places dropped packets once. I ran it once at my work place and is the lowest you'll see in the attached screenshots.
I can't find a solution. I am close to giving up

Hey y'all,
I've been having lots of issues with Wifi on the newest Fire 8. At first I thought it was my Wifi, but every other device was working just fine. Turns out, one the Amazon apps pre-loaded on the phone was causing the issue. Originally I was just using the Fire Toolbox to selectively disable apps, and I ended up disabling everything except Clock, Calculator, etc. (https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/development/official-amazon-fire-toolbox-v1-0-t3889604). But it turns out, if you don't "Disable Everything" related to Amazon this issue occurs. I would try to isolate the application causing the issue (my hunch is maybe on the Clock), but I'm just as happy to be disabling every Amazon app on the device itself.
Also, if you have a Dual-band wifi connection, you may want to try renaming the SSIDs to two different names, or find a way to force the Fire to use a single band.
If anyone else is having the same issue, hope this helps
I am having the same issues, extremely flaky wifi connections. I did use the Fire Toolbox and replaced the launcher and loaded Google Play etc... I've been putting off disabling all of the amazon apps as I do actually use Alexa and quite like the Show Mode feature. I'm so exasperated though I might nuke them all anyway.
In regards to the Dual Band comment, I'm curious what band do you connect to Fire 8 to, 5ghz or 2.4ghz?

Usually I connect 2.4ghz because I'm not close enough to the router for 5ghz. Also, I've found that using Netguard (open-source firewall) to block out Amazon apps helps a little bit. The router I have has some error message when I try to rename the bands, usually hosting a hotspot on another device can usually filter it by a single band
I threw the kitchen sink at it yesterday, removed all the Amazon apps, disabled Smart Suspend in the Battery settings, and split my wifi bands with unique names for each band. I am using the 5ghz band since I'm within range most of the time. Initial results are positive. Fingers crossed.
I 'm having the same issue, even though I disabled all the apps through the toolkit. Enabling, then disableing them all with a couple of reboots didn't seem to help. Using only a 2.4Ghz network seemed to do the trick. I was using dual band wifi and the kindle said it had connected to 5Ghz but wasn't actually loading anything....
