Asus PQ321 - Monitors

I have two Asus PQ321. Back when 4K was new, I paid a fortune for them, but years later they're down to around $1k each, which is still a lot, but I LOVE them. Terrific viewing angles, excellent color, super sharp.

Do you recommend them? I'm considering a new monitor but man, I just don't want to spend the money.

The question is about the technical/personal requirements. There are lots of good monitors. I'm using a Lenovo P44w-10 due to it's plenty input/output connections and overall performance and to save some space on my desk.

Don't you ever find it a pain point that Windows isn't very good at snapping on ultra-wide monitors?

It's fine so far except that the task bar cannot be centralized without 3rd party apps, but windows 11 comes with a native feature finally.
Otherwise I don't miss anything right now with win10

I do recommend it. If it's any indication, I bought the first one when it was one of the only 4K mons on the market (and back then, it was pricey!). I liked it so much I ended up with a second a couple of years later.
Great mon, recommended!

I'm hopefully buying a new monitor in the next 6 months preferably 27"-28" in screen size.
Any you can recommend kindly ?

I like them as an average user but I won't recommend them to anyone who is an avid user. Because I have one laptop of Asus, and I like it but it won't able to give me the possible outcome.

I don't get it. There is no design flaw. Why are they trying to dump this product? If they are really trying to dump this product for a newer model, the newer model better be able to sing and dance.

They are not dumping it, its just being priced competitively given the availability $400 IPS tegra 2, HC Asus Transformer.
Any way amazon's deal (via woot) was way better given it was $280 to your door step (no taxes or shipping fees).

Well, I can think of one giant design flaw that marred an otherwise great tablet (hey, let's take the most important part of the tablet and make it really, really, really crappy!). I would not be surprised to see this sucker at $200 new within the next couple of months with the onslaught of HC tablets hitting the market at sub-$500 prices.

You're talking about the screen? I've had my gtab for a couple months now. Been taking it everywhere with me. In fact, myself and a couple others from the lab attended a meeting to share our designs and experiments at a meeting. I whipped out the gtab and began sharing our autocad drawings and calculations. People were impressed. A few asked intently about my tablet.
The point is I've had no problem at all with the screen. I don't understand why people are crying bloody murder about this aspect of it. May be because you guys are spoiled?
To me, this is not a design flaw. It's not even a weakness. It just is. It makes the gtab different.
I have the Asus now, and I guess you just don't know what you're missing until you've seen a superior screen in the flesh. My jaw literally dropped when I turned it on. Straight-on, the gTab has a great screen, but the viewing angles are terrible, and I consider that a design flaw, as in they went really cheap with the screen. The Acer A500 does not have an IPS screen, yet its viewing angles are almost comparable to the Transformer, so it is possible. Whoever manufactured the gTab just cut corners on the most crucial part of a tablet.
If you're happy with yours, that's great, but that screen ran me off, and I can't recommend it to anyone when they can (eventually) have a Transformer for about $100 more.
Kinda wish I'd kept mine another week so I could post the difference so you could see for yourself, but I don't suppose it matters

I have an iPad2, the gTablet, an Acer netbook, a Dell laptop, and a 2010 MacBookPro.
The gTablet uses the exact same LCD as the acer Netbook. You can tell the screen is designed for a slightly off center nearly dead on viewing angle, and if you hold it so, it's quite fine.
You won't be able to see much at more than 10-15 degrees off center left/right (in landscape) or up/down (portrait)
It is what it is. It's not an iPad. It's not the $120 more Asus. It's the cheapest Tegra2 with great modding support here at xda you can buy. I wouldn't spend more than $280 on it, but for $280 its great.

There is nothing preemptive about it, the Asus transformer is already out there (NA release) and for even longer in EU, and the $399 NA price was already officially announced more than a month ago.

If you look at it straight-on, it is a great screen. If you look at it few degrees left or right, it loses quality but is still viewable. A few more degrees, and things become mushy. Tilt it slightly vertically and that's where the frustration really begins -- imagine those psychedelic videos where colors transform and turn negative. Like the post above said, it's a pure netbook screen and is meant to be viewed as you would with a netbook. Sticking it in a tablet was a cost-cutting shortcut.
Now, if you buy a case that props it up, it helps quite a bit. I'm not dogging the gTab really, it's a great tab that just needs to come down in price a little more in light of the the Transformer's release. If you're going to spend $280+ on a tablet, I'd advise you to spring for the extra $120 that will get you a Transformer.

Don't get me wrong. Whenever someone asks me about my gtab, I tell them it's not for them and recommend an ipad or ipad 2. I do that with pretty much everything nowadays. When people ask me I recommend them the most mainstream thing possible.
Well I don't feel so bad for directing a coworker to get an iPad 2 today She saw my Transformer and said she was looking at iPads, but she liked the widgets of Android (she has an Evo). I told her to just get an iPad, you pick it up and it's a vessel for apps, nothing more, and knowing her, I thought that was best.
But after playing with the Transformer, she's torn. So I guess that's a plus for HC, it's not as techie as I thought.

I direct people to the ipad 2 unapologetically. I'm sick of people complaining about nothing. Let apple deal with those spoiled brats.
Well I found someone who bought it and I guess they were scared to try to do any custom ROM stuff and they sold it to me for $190. I think i got a deal, I am currently reading up on it before I try anything though. I have been using Android for well over a year now, I have a captivate and I always flash the newest ROM's that come out for it. I am hoping the G Tablet is about as easy as my captivate to mod. Anyone have a favorite ROM for the G Tab, I am looking at playing Pocket Legends and games like that.

I've used them all. The one that seems to run the smoothest and fastest is the calkulin+clemsyn combo. I use the overclocked version 5 one.
That said, you really should try them all out one at a time. Again, it takes so little effort to flash a rom. Actually, it takes about 2 minutes for each rom to flash. Try each rom for a week and see how you like them.
Some people like vegan ginger because it's the latest and greatest. I personally like the fastest and most stable. Your choice.
Thank you very much for the information, i can't wait to dive in!

I currently have tNt 4.4 and I like it a lot. If/when I flash another rom, would I have to load all my Apps again? I have titanium backup but even then it would take a while to load them all. That might discourage me from trying ALL the roms out

I'm all for custom roms, and I do like mine far better with honeycomb on it, but unless you can swap out the display your experience is going to be nowhere near as good. Plus there's no functional camera (if you can call the cheap webcam a camera)
So, yeah... tone down the expectations a tad. With the Kindle fire driving the pricepoint down to $200, I'm pretty much thinking the gtab is a steal at $50, something to consider at $100, and a really bad idea above that price point. New.

I think your assessment is a bit harsh. I paid ~$250 for my GTab six months ago. After experimenting with a few ROMs I settled on Clemsyn+Calkulin's version of Froyo. With working Skype, Netflix, and HBO Go I think even at $250 the GTab is well worth the price. Bear in mind that at $200 the Kindle Fire lacks a webcam and microphone and is really only optimized as a delivery device for Amazon's media. I already have a Kindle 3 and can get all the media I need on my GTab.
The original post was touting the GTab as "awesomer than the iPad", which, of course, it isn't, regardless of how you modify it. And at less than half the price, I don't expect it to be.

Why are you still hating on the guy in the OP? To be fair, he said to make your Gtab EXPERIENCE awesomer than the iPad. Which it is, considering it's half the price. So, when you consider price which is part of the experience of owning it, the OP can be corrent.
He put together some info and shared it with others. /applaud.

Well I "fondled" an Ipad today & it may be the owners fault, but it was worst than a stock G-tab (apps & homescreen wise if you ask me). It was a plain touch screen device. The UI was awesome but the way I've pimped my G-tab out, I don't anyone but an iSnob would know how to do the same to a iPad. And about half of the 152 apps and games on my G-tab were requested by the iPad owner.
To sum it all up a G-tab can do everything an iPad can for almost half the price, despite the weight.

[Q] Help me make a decision - Advice on whether to go with Substitutes/Alternatives

Some of you may have noticed that I am quite active in the general Infinity thread. This is because I had decided to get one, naively assuming that the cheaper 32GB version will be purchasable in The Netherlands before I move to Asia (Indonesia) for 6 months (this happens in August).
I'm struggling in deciding on whether to get the more expensive 64GB version, or go with alternatives or substitutes. Let me describe my situation.
My budget for a tablet was 500, but I increased it to 600 for the Infinity
I was going to add 64GB of space with a MicroSD card class 10 which costs 55 euros
It seems like I can only get the 64GB version before I leave, which is above my extended budget
I want a tablet for 1) browsing the web in a relaxed environment, eg. on couch or at the swimming pool 2) watching high quality movies 3) doing some work like writing a small essay
What do you think I should do? Go for an alternative or substitute, e.g. a netbook? Or do you think that no netbook can fulfill my expectations as described above?
One example of a use case is that I will have a 16 hours flight. I would love to have a tablet with a long battery lifetime to watch movies during this flight.
Finally, do you think the Infinity is even capable of being used outside (in the shadows) with IPS+ on? I've heard that the reflection is higher than with other tablets.
What are the alternatives to TF700? Other than Acer A700, I don't think that there is any and due to all the issue (and lack of improvement from A510) with Acer I wouldn't consider it.
The best alternative to TF700 would have been the Lenovo Ideapad K2 (K2010) but from the looks of it, it's most likely cancelled. I even contacted Lenovo asking about the release date and following is the reply that I received
"We regret to inform you that we do not have any information as to when the K2 Tablet would be released and the price. We request you to check on the website of Lenovo for more information. "
Click to collapse
So with that said, TF700 seem to be all alone in the market right now with no substitutes.
from you criteria, probably a net book. besides the 'web browsing' i don't really see any other use for a touch screen for you.
but if you really want a touch screen, then probably the 300, i doubt you will see that big of a difference when watching quality rip movies.

Thanks, the thing about the Infinity is that it has 600 nits while the 300 only has 300. This is important to me since I want to use the tablet outside.
Also, isn't web browsing the main reason to get a tablet? Seems like a good enough reason to get touch screen.
Anyway, I think I've settled on the conclusion that there isn't really an alternative for me. I think I will just calm down and not buy anything until there is something that suits me for a better price.

The reflection isn't too bad, and I live in the Netherlands, too. Standing in my backyard, the screen is pretty much legible even on the lower screen brightness settings. That being said, I don't have a clue if sun power in Indonesia would necessitate higher brightness settings on the TF700.
Budget constraints would be the main issue here, I think, because a powerful netbook would set you back a signficant amount of euros as well. Also, I do not know if Asus would make a change of habit and start to supply the shops here in Holland with any significant amount of units. (I took the motorcycle for a ride yesterday from Hoorn to Breda to get mine -- 400 km for a tablet. In Holland, that means you're set for psychiatrical intervention. Hahaha!)
I wish you good luck deciding. I don't know where you're based, but you can drop me a line if you want to see it in action (live in Hoorn, work in Utrecht; Amsterdam as a stopover by train)....
Thanks Marty, I'm afraid I live high up in the north of the NL though
Anyway, we'll see how things go. ASUS Benelux did mention that they are releasing the 32GB version in September, but that seems so late it may be worth waiting for an earlier release. Not sure if that sounds likely but it's better than nothing.
I could give the motorcycle another whirl. Or another option would be to go to the store (BCC, MediaMarkt and the like) to give the Prime a long and hard look, since they seem to have about the same screen brightness, at least on first sight...
Of YouTube want a netbook itll be laggy ,

Hehehe, no problem, we're all in here to help. Well, not all, maybe, but you get the idea...
I had to commute to work today, so that means sitting in the fast service (InterCity) between Hoorn and Utrecht, which is a ride of about one-and-a-half hours or so. I had a lot of incoming light through the windows -- I definitely understand what they mean by the "mirror screen" argument, but it didn't actually reach levels that irritated me. I'm happy with the Infinity. That being said, I do see a potential problem: I could change the orientation a bit to change the reflection and viewing angle somewhat, whereas sitting poolside, this would hardly be an option due to the fact you wouldn't sit near shade, and you would want to bake evenly, right?

[Q] Buying a Tab 2 10.1 Tomorrow. Any reasons not to?

Hi!
In order to study a little better and browse/mail too, I finally decided to get a tablet. After discarding the iPad because I get frustrated after a while using it, I was going for the Note 10.1 but I won't be needing a good stylus anymore and I'm way more comfortable using a "cheaper" 330€ tablet than a 500€ one, so the only option left is the Tab 2 10.1 with the pretty nice pop up apps that compensates the lack of MultiWindow (which I hate in my Galaxy S2) (I'm not considering a tablet without good customization like Touchwiz. I want the S-Calendar and in a tablet, plain Android is kind of boring.)
So I wanted to ask if you guys told me not to buy it for any reasons. Or maybe you encourage me even more!
PS: Won't use it for games. I just need decent smoothness and good battery, which I'm pretty sure I'll get with the P5110.
Thanks!
Within 8 months: Motorola Xoom, Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, SGT 7.
I use for reading books, PDA, GPS in car, listening to music and rarely a camera. A 10" tablet was too clumsy for me to hold in one hand and the GPS too large to use while driving.
When you go to buy shop around for your 10 choice. There were many deals a couple of weeks ago.
BTW, I found if you don't like what you get the used market is brisk and you can get back most of what you pay.
I genuinely cannot fault this tablet. Bought it about 2 months ago on an impulse buy. Set me back £230 and honestly one of the best purchases I've ever made. It does everything you want from a tablet plus more. The jellybean update just reiterates how good the tablet is for the price. There is very little to no lag, The screen is absolutely amazing, speakers are fantastic. If you want a speedy android tablet for an absolute bargain, definitely get one. All i want now is multiscreen!

So, wait 8 months for something "better" knowing that 8 moths from that time there will be a list of "even better" devices. They cycle never ends. There is no way to stay ahead of the curve; except to buy every device.
But more to the point, you other comments are valid. For straight up reading the 10 inch is a tad cumbersome.

I've had my 10.1 for a couple of months and I couldn't be happier with it. So far, I use it for social stuff, reading and movies and have no complaints at all. Running AOKP JB. No complaints at all.
I already have it since a few hours. It's great. A little bit laggy with 4.0.3 but I'm going to update to JB right now
Thank you

It's a bit of a toss up imo. first of all, it isn;t cheap, although for comparable models it is great imo, and for what it is, it is great imo. being a tablet.
My assessment is it has reasonable power for comparable tablets, it is imo way better than a IPAD, even a 3, though the screen and camera are not as good, the apple is just annoying on almost all levels, imo. I am just getting into rooting it and the benefits that come along with that (And being careful to try to steer away from the bans of it.) and I am quite satisfied with my GT-P5113. which is the 16 GB, wifi only. I use VOIP, remotely control my systems and use my file servers for the heavier lifting from the tablet, and it goes pretty flawlessly. I also occasionally play some games, though honestly most are lower end at this stage for the tablet I think, there are still decent ones. same with applications....If I want to edit video/etc, I'll do it on my main systems, or remotely on my main systems from my tablet.
That being said, it is pretty good for music, ok, for playing videos after converting to a reasonable format, and imo excellent for reading ebooks of all types. I like the larger screen rather than the smaller ones frankly. it IS unwieldy, but a hand puck (simply a small puck to attach to the middle of the back. I made mine, but I believe they make them, and mines attached by velcro, for easy removing. scratchy side on the puck.) removes that problem, imo. (It also allows me to attach it to my car's dash and motocycle also.) anyways, I do not know any reason not to buy it, really, unless you want to spend way more money than the others are worth imo. It works. and it works well imo.

Too much imo, imo.

ph-2 ?

We've been working on a new device to reframe your perspective on mobile. It's now in early testing with our team outside the lab. Look forward to sharing more in the near future! #ProjectGEM pic.twitter.com/BnVy7yM2Kj

It looks cool and unique but I don't get it? Like why would I want to give up screen real estate from left to right and still have the same height? This is going to be a failure of a product for the simple reason it doesn't solve any size issues and has a smaller screen real estate.
However that ui looks promising. Essential should work on a foldable phone that turns into a watch. Just think if you could take the screen they have in those photos, wrap it around your wrist as a watch, and unfold it into a phone that looks like the photos they have...
I think there will be a day where you store your phone on your wrist not your pocket when it's not in use. The technology is almost caught up to implement that and whoever does it first correctly will be the next iPhone or Razr.
Haven't seen it. I love my PH-1, but this... thing? Looks weird, the screen format makes no sense, and the HUGE camera bump on the back is an instant turn-off. I dunno, it could be good, probably too early to tell, but so far, just looking at the prototypes... no.

I had the PH-1 and I loved it and I hoped that the new one would be better. But this one is just stupid... (((
The PH1 form factor is possibly the closest to perfect in recent years, IMO. Sure, there could be small improvements, but the screen height and width make it a very 'pocketable' handset--not too tall, like the Pixel2/3XL and a slew of other with only marginally more screen estate.
The PH2? It looks wrong, but perhaps isn't as tall as it seems. The main issue will be how the interface works and I can't quite conceptualise how it will manage to do a whole host of things i use on my phone, not least of which is simply reading print news media--3 words a line is likely to become irritating

Exactly! I absolutely love the PH-1 form-factor. I am not a fan of big phones, and always look for something with a reasonably small screen, but a good resolution. I am also not obsessed with bezels, and the bottom chin actually makes it more convenient for me to handle.

Seems pretty cool! If you only stick to what's worked before, you'll probably end up with what you already had.

yes, that remote!
Been needing to say this since speculation of another Essential phone started (year+ ago?):
Even if a second phone comes out, why on Earth would they call it PH-2?!
Don't people see, PH-1 ... PH-one ... PHone ... Phone.
A PH-2 would ruin the joke.

Yes, but since we have no idea how this device would actually be called (IF it materializes at all), people just use that as a "placeholder" for the name....

Yeah, fair enough!
I'm reminded of those that shorten Xbox One to xbone. I still read that as X-bone.

There is a rumor that was semi intentional and I kind of believe it.
I mean YouTube channels are already pointing out Series X: Sex.
The Xbox brand is one of the worst naming schemes of all time. If you search "Xbox" online you might get a Xbox (original), 360, one, or soon the new "Xbox".
Good luck selling that to kids when the average parent won't know the difference between any of them.
The Xbox brand is what they should use in marketing courses as what NOT to do.
