Going Back

This device out of the box is horrible. I am shocked that something this bad could be released. Several FC just starting up.
With the device flashed it becomes a tablet that one can use. I loved the hardware specs and how it performs but I cannot get over the screen quality.
It is the worst screen I have ever seen. At just a few degrees of axis, major color shifts appear. At 45 degrees the image becomes completely inverted. The screen is the main component on the device IMO. I will be exchanging it this week
I may pick up a nook color to hold me over till Feb-Mar when more tablets come out. At $250 it's a steal. The screen looks better than the iPad's. I know hardware wise the GTab kills it. Oh well, maybe we will have the perfect tablet sometime next year.
A big thanks to all the developers who contributed to making this device usable. Viewsonic owes you guys big time. If not for you guys they would be looking at 60%-80% return rate, again IMO.

well i paid full price and sales tax for my g tablet. its a great device if you can overlook a few things. viewsonic not releasing kernel source yet and the store i bought the g tablet at backing out of selling the product has me on the fence......wait just got a tweet from viewsonic ViewSonic ViewSonic Corp
We will get s/w update out ASAP. We're also releasing the kernel this week. The gTablet should NEVER have been pulled.

Guess it depends on how you normally view the device. I look at mine from slightly above, or left or right. Looking up to the device is rough, unless only like black & white images
For $350, nothing ATM touches this device:
Solid and fast locking wifi
Twice as fast (at least) as most non Tegra 2 devices
16gb internal
Easy mods
USB host
I am happy to not be able to look up to the device, considering what I got for the price, but the Nook is nice, if mainly reading and light browsing.

That's the other problem, I wanted the device to read, watch movies (720P) and use the emulators to play old nes games with a wiiMote via bluetooth. I know the nook color isn't up to the task. Maybe I'll just wait...
If only the G tab had a usable screen. You would think from a display company at least?? I guess everyone jumped on the TN panel bandwagon. Except for Apple, we all know how terrible they are doing. I would have easily paid $500+ if this device had an IPS panel or comparable display.

I know there's been chat about that, but has anyone actually done this? I would totally do this if I knew it was actually successful - my concerns are that the screen is too thick or the connectors are wrong.

nook color gets you 1 of 3. If you are giving up 2 out of 3 why not just save yourself $100 and get a nook which makes for a vastly better ereader. You also might want to read up on 'bad pixel' issues with the nook c. The grass is always greener.
Oh, and for all those compelled to start a new thread telling us you are returning the gtablet don't forget to let us know what store to check for your open box return

It will be the Sears's in Montclair, California. Unless someone can provide me a link to purchase a 10.1 LCD so I can swap out panels.

I can't post links yet, but blisscomputers.net had some good prices on replacement panels. In other threads there was discussion about getting one with a better resolution (as well as viewing angle) but I'm not sure how that would work right now. Might need the kernal source to get it to work.
I'd probably get one if it works.

I would just wait instead of getting the nook color. I don't see why anyone would prefer a non-tegra 2 device after seeing what this tablet can do.
Save your money because the next tegra 2 devices are going to be at least $500. You know how people are always looking for a cheap Android tablet, this is one of the tablets that they are going to suggest when all the other tegra 2 tablets are out.

It looks like xda is really working alot on gtab, but i here the screen isnt that good. I love what xda does and android. I am running evo on cm7 and would love the tablet to be ablet to run cyanogen as well. Im just confused on what is good and not.

Not much choice in Tegra 2 ATM or even 10" altogether. If you can wait you MIGHT want to wait and see what actually does ship from what was shown at CES...
gTablet is nice and hackable, but a number of people don't like the poor viewing angles of it's LCD panel. I don't notice this much as when I use the tablet I'm looking directly at it. (Also have a Nook Color which has better viewing angles but, again, I rarely notice this because 99.999% of the time I'm looking directly at the screen...)
If manufacturer support and kernel source are important just don't buy a Chinese tablet, or at least one w/o a western re-badger supporting it, but even then only a handful have released source. There was a list compiled by someone @ Redhat the other week, check back on /. for a link. (I got the NC because I trust B&N to support the NC for a while yet at least, presuming that they don't go under, but be aware that their customer service is beyond awful... and so far Viewsonic is supporting the gTablet...)
Also, any tablet that has 3/4G is likely to be expensive in the US as they will undoubtedly be tied to a carrier(s) who will insist on a grossly overpriced MSRP such that they can look "good" when they offer a deal if purchased w/a 2y contract, however, the total cost will be MUCH higher than even the grossly overpriced unlocked one should it even be offered.

I agree with the positive comments about the G-Tablet made by others here.
Personally, I think the criticisms of the screen are overblown. I find it more than workable and simply don't do things that make it less than optimal. No question it could be better -- but at the price point I think it really is okay.
As I have said in other posts -- I bought my G-Tablets because (1) they are here NOW; (2) the price is much better than the $699-$1100 tablets that aren't even here yet; and (3) who can put a price on the fun we are having making them like we want them? If you don' want to do that then go buy a fruity-pad at way more $$$$.
If I decide I want something else later then I'll go buy it then.

Thx for the comments. Thought about zpad. But it is alot higher for only difference I see is resolution. I don't like how these new ones coming out are tied to carriers. I have a cell phone for gods sake. I don't need 3g. I have wifi and tethering for that

Personally, I think the most portable size is 7" or 8". 10" is a little big to take along.

I think they are the same resolution 1024x600
zpad does however have 3G and GPS if they are must haves for you.

For anyone interested flat compuing has 9 flatpad a-10w tablets left. Just another zpad rebadge. But with a 1366x768 screen. Having owned the gtablet too the screen is a big improvement. Oh and mine was shipped with market.

Daml, I gotta try and verify this with you. I noticed on their site originally they had the a10w listed as 1366x768 but now it has been changed to 1024x600. How can you be sure it has the higher resolution?

Hmm ... that FlatComputing system looks identical to the gTablet ... There is no mention of a different display and the remainder of the hardware is spec'ed identical, isn't it?
For me, I must say that I *cannot stand* the reflective surface or terrible viewing angle of the gTablet. With that said, I'd still buy a gTablet, if the cost/value factored into the mix. There just isn't a better tablet going, for the money, than gTablet *with* VEGAN.

The one you recieved is 1366 x 768? The site says 1024 x 600. It only has 1 GB memory?

Daml: would you mind to send us some screenshots of the viewing angle? Since the hardware are very similar, if the screen is a big improvement, we may be able to replace the gtab screen with this one.

Got my a10w from Flat Computing today. It's a rebranded Advent Vega. As a matter of fact, in the software update instructions it looks like "Find/Replace" missed a Vega reference, lol.
I can confirm that the unit is nearly identical to the G Tablet minus the capacitive buttons on the front of the panel. The screen is 1024x600 and DOES NOT have better viewing angles. My guess is the screen is IDENTICAL to the g tab.
So, needless to say, my A10W will be for sale shortly. Not because there is anything wrong, but I pretty much have no need for two identical tablets

They are not dumping it, its just being priced competitively given the availability $400 IPS tegra 2, HC Asus Transformer.
Any way amazon's deal (via woot) was way better given it was $280 to your door step (no taxes or shipping fees).

Well, I can think of one giant design flaw that marred an otherwise great tablet (hey, let's take the most important part of the tablet and make it really, really, really crappy!). I would not be surprised to see this sucker at $200 new within the next couple of months with the onslaught of HC tablets hitting the market at sub-$500 prices.

You're talking about the screen? I've had my gtab for a couple months now. Been taking it everywhere with me. In fact, myself and a couple others from the lab attended a meeting to share our designs and experiments at a meeting. I whipped out the gtab and began sharing our autocad drawings and calculations. People were impressed. A few asked intently about my tablet.
The point is I've had no problem at all with the screen. I don't understand why people are crying bloody murder about this aspect of it. May be because you guys are spoiled?
To me, this is not a design flaw. It's not even a weakness. It just is. It makes the gtab different.

I have the Asus now, and I guess you just don't know what you're missing until you've seen a superior screen in the flesh. My jaw literally dropped when I turned it on. Straight-on, the gTab has a great screen, but the viewing angles are terrible, and I consider that a design flaw, as in they went really cheap with the screen. The Acer A500 does not have an IPS screen, yet its viewing angles are almost comparable to the Transformer, so it is possible. Whoever manufactured the gTab just cut corners on the most crucial part of a tablet.
If you're happy with yours, that's great, but that screen ran me off, and I can't recommend it to anyone when they can (eventually) have a Transformer for about $100 more.
Kinda wish I'd kept mine another week so I could post the difference so you could see for yourself, but I don't suppose it matters

I have an iPad2, the gTablet, an Acer netbook, a Dell laptop, and a 2010 MacBookPro.
The gTablet uses the exact same LCD as the acer Netbook. You can tell the screen is designed for a slightly off center nearly dead on viewing angle, and if you hold it so, it's quite fine.
You won't be able to see much at more than 10-15 degrees off center left/right (in landscape) or up/down (portrait)
It is what it is. It's not an iPad. It's not the $120 more Asus. It's the cheapest Tegra2 with great modding support here at xda you can buy. I wouldn't spend more than $280 on it, but for $280 its great.

There is nothing preemptive about it, the Asus transformer is already out there (NA release) and for even longer in EU, and the $399 NA price was already officially announced more than a month ago.

If you look at it straight-on, it is a great screen. If you look at it few degrees left or right, it loses quality but is still viewable. A few more degrees, and things become mushy. Tilt it slightly vertically and that's where the frustration really begins -- imagine those psychedelic videos where colors transform and turn negative. Like the post above said, it's a pure netbook screen and is meant to be viewed as you would with a netbook. Sticking it in a tablet was a cost-cutting shortcut.
Now, if you buy a case that props it up, it helps quite a bit. I'm not dogging the gTab really, it's a great tab that just needs to come down in price a little more in light of the the Transformer's release. If you're going to spend $280+ on a tablet, I'd advise you to spring for the extra $120 that will get you a Transformer.

Don't get me wrong. Whenever someone asks me about my gtab, I tell them it's not for them and recommend an ipad or ipad 2. I do that with pretty much everything nowadays. When people ask me I recommend them the most mainstream thing possible.

Well I don't feel so bad for directing a coworker to get an iPad 2 today She saw my Transformer and said she was looking at iPads, but she liked the widgets of Android (she has an Evo). I told her to just get an iPad, you pick it up and it's a vessel for apps, nothing more, and knowing her, I thought that was best.
But after playing with the Transformer, she's torn. So I guess that's a plus for HC, it's not as techie as I thought.

I direct people to the ipad 2 unapologetically. I'm sick of people complaining about nothing. Let apple deal with those spoiled brats.

Well I found someone who bought it and I guess they were scared to try to do any custom ROM stuff and they sold it to me for $190. I think i got a deal, I am currently reading up on it before I try anything though. I have been using Android for well over a year now, I have a captivate and I always flash the newest ROM's that come out for it. I am hoping the G Tablet is about as easy as my captivate to mod. Anyone have a favorite ROM for the G Tab, I am looking at playing Pocket Legends and games like that.

You don't need to hope. Everything about the gtab is unlocked. It is currently the most hackable device out there.

I've used them all. The one that seems to run the smoothest and fastest is the calkulin+clemsyn combo. I use the overclocked version 5 one.
That said, you really should try them all out one at a time. Again, it takes so little effort to flash a rom. Actually, it takes about 2 minutes for each rom to flash. Try each rom for a week and see how you like them.
Some people like vegan ginger because it's the latest and greatest. I personally like the fastest and most stable. Your choice.

I currently have tNt 4.4 and I like it a lot. If/when I flash another rom, would I have to load all my Apps again? I have titanium backup but even then it would take a while to load them all. That might discourage me from trying ALL the roms out

hello, I've been recently looking at tablets. I want something pretty decently nice, with honeycomb (which you can put on this), and just generally nice specs. But my real question is, is this thing a piece of complete crap? it's off brand for things i buy usually, but I've seen generally good reviews. I've also been looking at the Transformer and the Xoom. Thank you all for the help.

considering that you can get one on Ebay for under $250, I would say yes, it's most definitely worth it.
Even with Froyo roms, it's a very useful tablet that will probably do the things that you want it to do. Yes, the screen angles are not ideal, but they are acceptable (in my opinion)
Put it this way, is buying a transformer, or Xoom for almost twice as much going to be just as useless when the newest tablets come out for Christmas?
I believe that it's a question of perception. What do you want to use it for?
and who knows, when Ice Cream Sandwich gets released, it may be easier to port to the G-Tablet than Honeycomb.

Well the transformer is only $150 more.. ill look up a comparison between the two. That was the other one I am still honestly considering

I guess my point was, is the transformer going to be just as obsolete when the new tablets arrive? Nvidea is releasing a new tegra platform, that will basically make anything running on a tegra2 old hat. This would include the Xoom, Transformer, Iconia, as well as the G-Tablet, Adam, Vega, etc. These things depreciate faster than a car driven off the dealer's lot. Originally what, $450 when they were released? I bought mine for $300 (with a few extras) on Ebay. now they are retailing for $250 in Woot deals and Tiger Direct, while used ones on Ebay are plummeting down to nearly $200. When the new Tegra devices are released, I suspect that a G-tablet can be bought for $100 used.
What I mean, is why not save the $150 now, to put toward a better tablet down the line...The g-tablet will at least give you a less expensive introduction to the android tablet world, while still being a quite useful tool.

Honeycomb is not completely functional on the gtab (as of now). It is missing the Honeycomb specific drivers from Nvidia (aka full hardware acceleration, high def video).
If you really care about Honeycomb you should get the transformer IMO.
Although, I am quite happy with froyo based ROMs
Others are right in saying that quad core Tegra 3s are around the corner, Tegra 2 prices might drop by the end of the year. Given how Nvidia and Viewsonic acted regarding the gtab, I foresee support for Tegra 2s dropping drastically as newer hardware gets released.

Yeah the almost fully functioning honeycomb on here is fine for me. Should be ordering my g tab this week!

Hello, I wrote a quick review for some guys that I work with. I am sure there are many reviews of the gtablet, but...
Here are my conclusions so far;
This thing is about the same size as the Xoom, and thicker than the IPAD. It is definitely not as sexy.
The screen is OK. It is not a high quality screen like you find on the other devices.
The processor is great, and the memory is sufficient. Things move pretty quick.
The ROM out of the box REALLY sucked. I was hoping to just deal with it, but Google had not approved the tablet so there were NO Google apps at all. Not acceptable. It took me a couple of hours to learn (last night till around 1:00am), but I replaced the stock ROM with a hacked ROM with everything I wanted.
This thing is really just a big Android phone with no phone or GPS.
I loaded up my Sony Reader software, downloaded all of my books, and then imported them into a DRM capable reader that is better.
Although there are some ROMs that support Gingerbread screens, I think I will stick with this 2.2 (or is it 2.3) Android feel.
What will I use it for?
Reading ebooks, PDFs (Scientific American, Maximum PC)
Google apps – maps, search
Kayak, hotels.com apps
Games (mostly for the kids) – I got Android Market to work
Web Browsing / some forum reading (via Tapatalk)
Personal email reading and contacts (no work email will be set up)
Maybe occasional Skype and Gotomeeting (camera sucks, so mostly audio)
News and weather
Of course, with the exception of reading the ebooks, I would always use the Macbook Pro if it were available.
So the speed and memory makes this all possible, but the experience (screen, size, build) is not equivalent to the expensive tablets.
Biggest complaints?
No GPS
Screen is not easy to see at an angle
I needed to root the thing to make it useful, which means I now need to stay on top of that and update it manually
The 10.1 device is a bit bigger / bulkier than I expected – the weight is the same as the ipad I believe.
I “can” watch videos on it (even 1080p), but moving the files would be a drag… it uses a microSD card that I would need to pop ion an adapter, or I could use the USB connection. Maybe I can find a way to do it with wifi or Bluetooth.
No USB charging… WTF??? It comes with a separate adapter that has to plug into the wall…
The screen is a 1024x600 which is similar to most pads, but it is really inferior to the Macbook Pro, and there is just something that is “fuzzy” about it.
Biggest positives?
Cheap - $269 delivered (no tax or shipping)
Fast
Should do what I want…
Next Steps…
See how much I actually use it for anything other than ebooks. If I do end up needing it more than I think, I would consider the Asus Transformer or something else new in the next year or so.

The screen is complete crap.
You should look hard for something with a better screen around $300-$350. If you can find it, get it.
And I *like* my Gtab - but its really just for kicking around and messing with roms and android. The screen really is killer bad unless you use it only at night, head on
Honeycomb works, and works well, as well as you could hope for unsupported xda rom hacking - ie, no netflix, no Hardware acceleration, occasional stand on your head workarounds, and the possibility of sudden death... well, ok, not that last one.
Bottom line: if you can find it for $100-$200, and want to play with roms, and tweak, and screw with it a lot to get it to be as good as a $400 one except for the horrible screen that cannot be fixed, YES, this is your tablet.
If you want a tablet to take out of the box and use, with rom updates from the manufacturer, and a screen you can read ebooks off of, this is NOT your tablet. Even for free.

So should I just get the transformer? Ah so many decisions!
Well I'm literally about to go to fry electronics and ill test out some there. Thanks !

For $400, I'd say yeah.
Better screen, 1Kx800 resolution, 2x the ram. Yeah, looks like that's all worth $120.
Oh... and a GPS too.
Oh, and Honeycomb 3.1 from Asus. Plus lots of XDA love it seems.

I think the main question is what you want the tablet for or what to do with it.
A cheap $250-300 laptop has so much more computing power and practical use than any tablet...just a bit bulkier.
The tablet market will have much more offerings and better with faster cpus and such..just have to wait a bit.
I bought my gtab from woot 4/2011 for $275. I have installed several ROMs on it. They all are pretty good with their own pluses and minuses.
I'm currently on Flashback 5.4 HC: it looks nice and works well. Gmail, Talk - w/o video; G-Voice, Maps, Lattitude, Earth etc all work. You Tube works; a bunch of games works. The big screen is better than the phone size screen. Nice quick weather apps. Nice calendar.
What it cannot do is replace the screen and functionality of my desktop for real work.
If you can find a cheap Gtab and play with ROM's, flashing, androids quirks etc - jsut for the fun of it, then get a gtab. Fully flashable with great recovery process. Almost 99.99% Non-brickable. Get a used one for play and test.
If you want a decent a functional tablet w/o hassle, get an I-pad2.

I have read many complaints about the viewing angle of the screen, but I have had my tablet for months and I have no complaints. It has replaced my planner for work and is great for watching movies, not sharing with my neighbor.

[Q] Buying a Tab 2 10.1 Tomorrow. Any reasons not to?

In order to study a little better and browse/mail too, I finally decided to get a tablet. After discarding the iPad because I get frustrated after a while using it, I was going for the Note 10.1 but I won't be needing a good stylus anymore and I'm way more comfortable using a "cheaper" 330€ tablet than a 500€ one, so the only option left is the Tab 2 10.1 with the pretty nice pop up apps that compensates the lack of MultiWindow (which I hate in my Galaxy S2) (I'm not considering a tablet without good customization like Touchwiz. I want the S-Calendar and in a tablet, plain Android is kind of boring.)
So I wanted to ask if you guys told me not to buy it for any reasons. Or maybe you encourage me even more!
PS: Won't use it for games. I just need decent smoothness and good battery, which I'm pretty sure I'll get with the P5110.

Within 8 months: Motorola Xoom, Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, SGT 7.
I use for reading books, PDA, GPS in car, listening to music and rarely a camera. A 10" tablet was too clumsy for me to hold in one hand and the GPS too large to use while driving.
When you go to buy shop around for your 10 choice. There were many deals a couple of weeks ago.
BTW, I found if you don't like what you get the used market is brisk and you can get back most of what you pay.

I genuinely cannot fault this tablet. Bought it about 2 months ago on an impulse buy. Set me back £230 and honestly one of the best purchases I've ever made. It does everything you want from a tablet plus more. The jellybean update just reiterates how good the tablet is for the price. There is very little to no lag, The screen is absolutely amazing, speakers are fantastic. If you want a speedy android tablet for an absolute bargain, definitely get one. All i want now is multiscreen!

So, wait 8 months for something "better" knowing that 8 moths from that time there will be a list of "even better" devices. They cycle never ends. There is no way to stay ahead of the curve; except to buy every device.
But more to the point, you other comments are valid. For straight up reading the 10 inch is a tad cumbersome.

I've had my 10.1 for a couple of months and I couldn't be happier with it. So far, I use it for social stuff, reading and movies and have no complaints at all. Running AOKP JB. No complaints at all.

I already have it since a few hours. It's great. A little bit laggy with 4.0.3 but I'm going to update to JB right now

It's a bit of a toss up imo. first of all, it isn;t cheap, although for comparable models it is great imo, and for what it is, it is great imo. being a tablet.
My assessment is it has reasonable power for comparable tablets, it is imo way better than a IPAD, even a 3, though the screen and camera are not as good, the apple is just annoying on almost all levels, imo. I am just getting into rooting it and the benefits that come along with that (And being careful to try to steer away from the bans of it.) and I am quite satisfied with my GT-P5113. which is the 16 GB, wifi only. I use VOIP, remotely control my systems and use my file servers for the heavier lifting from the tablet, and it goes pretty flawlessly. I also occasionally play some games, though honestly most are lower end at this stage for the tablet I think, there are still decent ones. same with applications....If I want to edit video/etc, I'll do it on my main systems, or remotely on my main systems from my tablet.
That being said, it is pretty good for music, ok, for playing videos after converting to a reasonable format, and imo excellent for reading ebooks of all types. I like the larger screen rather than the smaller ones frankly. it IS unwieldy, but a hand puck (simply a small puck to attach to the middle of the back. I made mine, but I believe they make them, and mines attached by velcro, for easy removing. scratchy side on the puck.) removes that problem, imo. (It also allows me to attach it to my car's dash and motocycle also.) anyways, I do not know any reason not to buy it, really, unless you want to spend way more money than the others are worth imo. It works. and it works well imo.
