Looking for unbiased opinions on G tab, in the G tab forum lol

So my situation, I was fortunate to earn a free ipad wifi/3g 16gb from a sales contest at work, well Ive played with the thing for a few weeks and I have to say apple blows. Anyways gunna sell it on ebay, looking like I can get about $450 for it.
I then want to take the money and buy an android tablet, i really want a honeycomb one, but I know they are very expensive as they are just coming out.
So I thought to myself why couldn't I just buy a tablet that comes with Froyo, and then root it, and flash a custom honeycomb rom once a developer ports it over to my device..? It would save me alot of cash/waiting.
So I'm assuming all the G tab owners did some shopping around before buying this tablet. What are the top 3 android tablets under $450 in your opinion?
Obviously another concern is which tablet under $450 will be likely to have the most developer support, being the flashaholic that I am, I really want something that has many roms and kernels etc.. availiable. I did see quite a few roms in the G tab development section, but I am finding it very difficult to find out information about other tablets as far as rom development. What do you guys thing from a developer support stand point?

Under $450 and that are out now tablets....
If you're just looking for a tablet to browse the internet, casual gaming, youtube..you know basic stuff...you can save about $100 by buying a nook. Lots of dev support...I mean lots.
If you want something more powerful with a bigger screen but weaker viewing angles than the gtab is tops in my opinion. If you don't mind a used gtab...than I would grab one if you can find it.
As for a third choice, I guess I would get the archos 70 or 101.

I personally wouldn't get a nook. I had one and ended up trading it for an archos 101. From what it looks like there is more development for the GTab. The nook is a nice device but I really didn't think the device was speedy enough for me. If I'm getting a tablet then it should have better specs then my phone (Nexus S). Screen on the Nook was nice but I've always wanted a bigger tab. I like my archos 101 but then again the processor was good but I felt it could be better. I just sold my archos a few days ago on here and ordered a GTab and it'll be here tomorrow. Nook is $250 new and GTab cost me $368, with the GTab you may be getting a worse screen but you get more internal storage, better processor, bluetooth, IMO better dev support, and a USB port which I personally want. I've also had a Galaxy Tab but when I had it development was slow so I got rid of it also again it has the same specs as my phone. IMO theres no point in a tablet that has equal or worse specs then your phone (unless you have a dual core phone) and after experience 7inch screens are good for reading and comics but 10.1inch screens are better for web browsing and even better for reading and comics

Had my gtab for about 2 weeks now that I bout from another user here on xda for $320. Prior to the purchase I had been following the forums and watching youtub videos of the device and drooling. Now that I have it, I feel I may have hyped it a bit too much. It is a good device but there are a few things about it that bother me but to be fair I was expecting some of them. the screen is as bad as they say. This device is pretty hefty. Holding it in can be tiresome at times. The bezel is thin on three sides, one of which also has capacitive buttons which makes it hard to find a comfortable way to hold it at times unless you are using both hands. No gps. As for the roms, as good as they are they are far from perfect. They each have their own issues which were easy to ignore at first but after a while i find to be annoying when you want something that just works. I appreciate the devs though and I'm sure in time they will figure everything out. After trying a xoom at frys the other day I can honestly say they know what a tablet should be like. I just wish it wasn't an extra 500 bucks.

BuI shopped arround for a good while. I have been using resistive screen tablet PC's in my work for years, and hated them. Ugly screens tedious repeated touches to get anywhere. Call me crazy but I really believe that anyone who complains about the screen on the gtab needs to take a reality check. This thing has better viewing angles than my android phone. What do you want to do with it? Rest it on your coffee table and sit 10 feet away at a 45° angle and expect perfect color? Yes there are nicer screens out there but IMHO this is way better than the crap I have seen for years. I'm sure it would have had a super top of the line screen too if Malta could have gotten screens from LG at nearly cost like apple does.
The price is perfect and the screen is perfect for the price. Enjoy the fact that no one will see what's on your screen unless you want them to. Its a security feature in my book.

^^^^Yeah This. I waited a week for mine to come from the good ol' US of A (Im in oztralia )
After reading all the reports.. bad screens, slow stock UI etc I thought ok, well the screen is probably as bad as they say and the UI cant be that bad...
well it was exactly opposite - the screen is actually not that bad compared to some screens i deal with daily. UI was even worse than I could have imagined.
I know have vegan on it and it rocks. For the price I am absolutely blown away.

You can not go wrong with the g-Tab. Especially since you stated that you are a "Flashaholic." I have had mine for almost 2 months now and absolutely love it. I have tried both the vegan and TNT-Lite roms, and ended up staying with the TNT-Lite. While there are many things that could have been implemented better, in my mind it is a better value right now than the competition. I love the fact that it has removable storage. I have a little case that I keep my micro-SD cards in and swap them out whenever I want to watch something else or need more storage. Since purchasing this product, I have taken it with me on several business trips, and have found it indispensable. I can even back my photos up onto it using an SD card reader.
Bottom Line: If you do not mind playing around and fiddling with settings and enjoy trying new things, then I suggest getting the g-Tab. Over wise I suggest waiting a little longer until the "Tablet Form Factor" becomes more settled.

Just a note on the Notion Ink Adam which falls into the sub $450 category (wifi LCD version, anyways). I received hoping to get better viewing angles but they seemed to be the same as the Gtab, plus I really like the Gtab's form factor a lot more. The Adam was heavier, thicker and more squared off making it not as comfortable to hold as the Gtab. I ebayed the Adam and actually turned a little profit from it

I think the g tab sounds like it will do what I want, it really will just be for playing games, web browsing, and taking on airplanes etc, so it sounds like the way to go. And hopefully honeycomb roms will be available before too long!
Follow up question, where can you get a good case for the g tab? I liked the one that I bought my ipad, it was kind of like a little padfolio and it could fold into a "stand" which was great for watching movies on the plane.
Other than that just gotta research rooting this thing, I plan to pick one up before the end of the weekend. And you guys have already given me some ideas which roms to try. Thanks!

Check the G Tablet Accessories forum, there are a couple of options depending whether you want a keyboard or not and at least one more on the way

So I was wondering if I had to update anything in order to flash custom roms, or can I just root my tab, and then follow the instructions on that thread and be good to go on custom roms?
Also what ROM would you guys recomend? I am typically an AOSP guy assuming that everything is functional, but my wife will be using this tablet too and she is not very tech savvy, so I would like a rom that is pretty stable, any suggestions would be apprecited thanks!
Also I see clockwork v08 seems to be the hot ticket, so I assume that I will use that? I have always used Amon RA on my EVO, but it doesnt appear that Amon RA is availiable for the G tab, is that a correct assumption?

Just pick out a ROM - TNTLite and VEGAn are the two most popular around here - and follow the instructions carefully.

Just a little update, I got my GTab today and love it sooooooooo much. Viewing angles aren't to bad. Monster Madness, Samurai II, and Backbreaker are awesome. Very fast device

I think the gTab is the best bang for your buck at between $350 and $400 especially with the ROMs our gTabDevs are churning out for us. However, if you really want an official Honeycomb tablet I've read that Sam's Club will be selling these at their stores for around $500 each in the next few weeks.

I am sticking with my Nook Color
After having received the Archos 101. I was disappointed in the screen quality and the touch screen and lack of dev support. I sold it and got the g tablet and was in love with it until I bought my mom a kindle and started to like the form factor and size. I then started becoming bored with my g tablet. I then began looking at the nook color forums and decided to buy one, since I have bought it, I haven't touched my g tablet. I really like the size and the feel of it, I read more now and still play the games I like. I am happy running CM7 gingerbread and looking forward to honeycomb when it comes out as AOSP.

The dirty little secret is that there is no day to day life changing use for a tablet. So this can put you in two categories.
#1. You want to try and use the tablet during travel and such. In this case form factor is going to be important. The Nook Color is probably a better option as you sacrifice overall performance for the usability of the design.
#2. You want a device to develop on and try to utilize the latest and greatest. The Tegra 2 is the "it" platform right now for the android tablets. The GTab and its brothers give you the best entry into this field.
I am solidly in #2. Sure I have played some games on my tablet, I have browsed the web and I have used it on the go. But there has never been a situation where my VZ Droid would not have let me do the exact same thing.
I am comfortable with the fact that I bought a development platform. Having it in hand shows me the potential of the concept.

Excellent post, and i'm in catoegory #2 as well, I'm playing with house money becuase I got the ipad for free. But my wife really wants something to play games with and I like to watch movies etc on the airplane as well as browse the etc at home.

hello, I've been recently looking at tablets. I want something pretty decently nice, with honeycomb (which you can put on this), and just generally nice specs. But my real question is, is this thing a piece of complete crap? it's off brand for things i buy usually, but I've seen generally good reviews. I've also been looking at the Transformer and the Xoom. Thank you all for the help.

considering that you can get one on Ebay for under $250, I would say yes, it's most definitely worth it.
Even with Froyo roms, it's a very useful tablet that will probably do the things that you want it to do. Yes, the screen angles are not ideal, but they are acceptable (in my opinion)
Put it this way, is buying a transformer, or Xoom for almost twice as much going to be just as useless when the newest tablets come out for Christmas?
I believe that it's a question of perception. What do you want to use it for?
and who knows, when Ice Cream Sandwich gets released, it may be easier to port to the G-Tablet than Honeycomb.

Well the transformer is only $150 more.. ill look up a comparison between the two. That was the other one I am still honestly considering

I guess my point was, is the transformer going to be just as obsolete when the new tablets arrive? Nvidea is releasing a new tegra platform, that will basically make anything running on a tegra2 old hat. This would include the Xoom, Transformer, Iconia, as well as the G-Tablet, Adam, Vega, etc. These things depreciate faster than a car driven off the dealer's lot. Originally what, $450 when they were released? I bought mine for $300 (with a few extras) on Ebay. now they are retailing for $250 in Woot deals and Tiger Direct, while used ones on Ebay are plummeting down to nearly $200. When the new Tegra devices are released, I suspect that a G-tablet can be bought for $100 used.
What I mean, is why not save the $150 now, to put toward a better tablet down the line...The g-tablet will at least give you a less expensive introduction to the android tablet world, while still being a quite useful tool.
I would just hate to see somebody spend more money on a similar tablet that will cause them buyers remorse in 3 months or so. Of course, if you have the cash to burn, then go ahead and buy what you really want...for most people, that's an iPad...jk

Honeycomb is not completely functional on the gtab (as of now). It is missing the Honeycomb specific drivers from Nvidia (aka full hardware acceleration, high def video).
If you really care about Honeycomb you should get the transformer IMO.
Although, I am quite happy with froyo based ROMs
Others are right in saying that quad core Tegra 3s are around the corner, Tegra 2 prices might drop by the end of the year. Given how Nvidia and Viewsonic acted regarding the gtab, I foresee support for Tegra 2s dropping drastically as newer hardware gets released.

Yeah the almost fully functioning honeycomb on here is fine for me. Should be ordering my g tab this week!

Hello, I wrote a quick review for some guys that I work with. I am sure there are many reviews of the gtablet, but...
Here are my conclusions so far;
This thing is about the same size as the Xoom, and thicker than the IPAD. It is definitely not as sexy.
The screen is OK. It is not a high quality screen like you find on the other devices.
The processor is great, and the memory is sufficient. Things move pretty quick.
The ROM out of the box REALLY sucked. I was hoping to just deal with it, but Google had not approved the tablet so there were NO Google apps at all. Not acceptable. It took me a couple of hours to learn (last night till around 1:00am), but I replaced the stock ROM with a hacked ROM with everything I wanted.
This thing is really just a big Android phone with no phone or GPS.
I loaded up my Sony Reader software, downloaded all of my books, and then imported them into a DRM capable reader that is better.
Although there are some ROMs that support Gingerbread screens, I think I will stick with this 2.2 (or is it 2.3) Android feel.
What will I use it for?
Reading ebooks, PDFs (Scientific American, Maximum PC)
Google apps – maps, search
Kayak, hotels.com apps
Games (mostly for the kids) – I got Android Market to work
Web Browsing / some forum reading (via Tapatalk)
Personal email reading and contacts (no work email will be set up)
Maybe occasional Skype and Gotomeeting (camera sucks, so mostly audio)
News and weather
Of course, with the exception of reading the ebooks, I would always use the Macbook Pro if it were available.
So the speed and memory makes this all possible, but the experience (screen, size, build) is not equivalent to the expensive tablets.
Biggest complaints?
No GPS
Screen is not easy to see at an angle
I needed to root the thing to make it useful, which means I now need to stay on top of that and update it manually
The 10.1 device is a bit bigger / bulkier than I expected – the weight is the same as the ipad I believe.
I “can” watch videos on it (even 1080p), but moving the files would be a drag… it uses a microSD card that I would need to pop ion an adapter, or I could use the USB connection. Maybe I can find a way to do it with wifi or Bluetooth.
No USB charging… WTF??? It comes with a separate adapter that has to plug into the wall…
The screen is a 1024x600 which is similar to most pads, but it is really inferior to the Macbook Pro, and there is just something that is “fuzzy” about it.
Biggest positives?
Cheap - $269 delivered (no tax or shipping)
Fast
Should do what I want…
Next Steps…
See how much I actually use it for anything other than ebooks. If I do end up needing it more than I think, I would consider the Asus Transformer or something else new in the next year or so.

The screen is complete crap.
You should look hard for something with a better screen around $300-$350. If you can find it, get it.
And I *like* my Gtab - but its really just for kicking around and messing with roms and android. The screen really is killer bad unless you use it only at night, head on
Honeycomb works, and works well, as well as you could hope for unsupported xda rom hacking - ie, no netflix, no Hardware acceleration, occasional stand on your head workarounds, and the possibility of sudden death... well, ok, not that last one.
Bottom line: if you can find it for $100-$200, and want to play with roms, and tweak, and screw with it a lot to get it to be as good as a $400 one except for the horrible screen that cannot be fixed, YES, this is your tablet.
If you want a tablet to take out of the box and use, with rom updates from the manufacturer, and a screen you can read ebooks off of, this is NOT your tablet. Even for free.

So should I just get the transformer? Ah so many decisions!

For $400, I'd say yeah.
Better screen, 1Kx800 resolution, 2x the ram. Yeah, looks like that's all worth $120.
Oh... and a GPS too.
Oh, and Honeycomb 3.1 from Asus. Plus lots of XDA love it seems.

I think the main question is what you want the tablet for or what to do with it.
A cheap $250-300 laptop has so much more computing power and practical use than any tablet...just a bit bulkier.
The tablet market will have much more offerings and better with faster cpus and such..just have to wait a bit.
I bought my gtab from woot 4/2011 for $275. I have installed several ROMs on it. They all are pretty good with their own pluses and minuses.
I'm currently on Flashback 5.4 HC: it looks nice and works well. Gmail, Talk - w/o video; G-Voice, Maps, Lattitude, Earth etc all work. You Tube works; a bunch of games works. The big screen is better than the phone size screen. Nice quick weather apps. Nice calendar.
What it cannot do is replace the screen and functionality of my desktop for real work.
If you can find a cheap Gtab and play with ROM's, flashing, androids quirks etc - jsut for the fun of it, then get a gtab. Fully flashable with great recovery process. Almost 99.99% Non-brickable. Get a used one for play and test.
If you want a decent a functional tablet w/o hassle, get an I-pad2.

I have read many complaints about the viewing angle of the screen, but I have had my tablet for months and I have no complaints. It has replaced my planner for work and is great for watching movies, not sharing with my neighbor.

I am on the fence between the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the TF700T infinity. Any thoughts you all may have please share. The pen isn't a deal breaker for me, but the KB dock for the TF700 could be a real deal maker. I like the concept of a tablet book. Not to mention the hi-rez screen and some pretty impressive CPU/GPU specs.
I also have thoughts of waiting for the next product release cycle from both Asus and Samsung to see what the future may hold.
Fell free to coment... positive, negative please feel free to fend the good the bad and the ugly/beautiful...I'll put my big boy panties on; so let it rip.

I was on the same fence. I decided on this over the Note b/c
I like that the dock has a battery to help charge the tablet
I like the extra storage accommodations in the dock
I love the HD screen
I like the feel of brushed metal as opposed to plastic

I could not be happier with my Infinity. Wait for what Asus makes to trump it and you'll be waiting till 2013. The device just came to the USA a few months ago, so it's still relatively new.

Make sure you physically use the Infinity before you dump that much money out, specially for the 64mb model. For that price and the dock you can buy a pretty powerful i7 laptop with a great screen. Regarding the Infinity the specs and numbers look great on paper but when you use it, it doesn't seem like the same thing as on paper. The JellyBean update did make it more smooth, but regular conventional browsing it jerks around when doing a simple scroll through a website. I've learned specially with technology that "specs" on paper do not necessarily coincide with the real world. If I could install Android on my wife's iPad I would LOVE to do that as I think th Apple hardware and quality is fantastic and proven.

bradslinux - As usual, the only person who can really decide is you. Because you'll always get answers that are all over the map here.
I was reading here before buying and thinking I might encounter issues such as those mentioned above and others people claimed to experience. But, it turns out my experience with the Infinity has been great and I'm not having such issues. (I've always prefered using XScope for my web browsing, 2nd place Dolphin, 3rd place Firefox, stock always is last place with me even with Chome. And it was like that with me even before I had the Infinity.) No physical laptop is as light as the Infinity with its dock and everything from web browsing to everything else has been a pleasure and a breeze to perform. Plus, you can't detach the screen from a laptop and the Infinity with just the screen is so light it's scary :laugh: .
You can even read in the threads about the JB update, there are people who are happy like me and others who are upset. Of course it's best to factory reset after the update, but even with that there are some happy afterwards and some who are sad. (If you like root, be sure to read about how to handle that before doing the JB update.)
Nobody can answer the question but you.
Every single Android device I buy, I see tons of complaints about, and every single time I get it I'm so much happier than the complaints. But that's how it has been for me. I know what I like and I like the Infinity .

There's some great input in this thread.
I couldn't agree more as far as the positives.
Had my 32 gig gray Infin for over 2 months and have few complaints.
I'm not one of the "lucky" I am just a gadget consumer who bought a product that more than fulfilled it's ability.
If all the apps in the play store were written for tablets like this one I believe there would minimal *****ing about this thing.
I'm one of the buyers that thinks this tab may just be future enabled...

I'm spoiled with the ease with which I could root and unlock my Galaxy Nexus, and have been trying different radios, kernels and ROMs for months, with virtually no worries, no complexity. I'm new to the Infinity, so the complexities and uncertainty about NVflash (too late for me), unlocking and rooting once JB is installed, etc, is still a bit bewildering in comparison to the GNEx (I have lots of reading to do) -- and I'm finding it irritating so far. That said, even with stock JB installed, and Apex Pro and Beautiful Widgets (and HD widgets - still deciding which I like better on this device), I'm finding the TF700T to be a pretty amazing device.
I took it out "for a spin" today -- into NYC by train, on a couple of subways, and to a couple of meetings. I purposely did NOT carry a backpack or briefcase, took no laptop, no laptop brick, etc. The Infinity and dock, in a simple slipcase, was the only "business tool" I brought with me in addition to a phone today.
On the train into NY and even in the NYC subways (Verizon has picocells in the train tunnels), my Galaxy Nexus had a strong signal, so I flipped on it's Wi-Fi hotspot and my TF700T was connected the entire time I was traveling. Sweet!
At the business meetings, I opened up a few PowerPoint presentations I had copied on the device before my trip. The display was so bright and clear that the presentations looked great on the 10.1" screen -- and I was able to pass the tablet itself around for people to look at, navigate through slides, etc. Incredibly effective.
On the way home, I assembled notes from the day, marked up the presentations. I used it as a primary email client for the day. Amazingly (for me, coming from a Galaxy Nexus as a reference point), I used the device for several hours today, the display was amazing even in the brightest light- and I essentially did everything needed with a fraction of what I would normally carry for a business day in the New York. After many hours of use, I had barely dented the battery charge -- this is really pretty amazing. As bright as clear as the display is,it is apparently pretty energy efficient.
Anyway - between functionality, usability, elegance, battery life and sheer portability, this is clearly going to have a big impact on my days as a "road warrior".
Honestly - the only thing seriously giving me second thoughts is increasingly real sounding speculation about a Google / Samsung Galaxy Nexus 10.1 in the works, with 2560 x 1600 resolution (among other things). I have a strong feeling that I'll be wanting that new device when it comes out. But for now, the TF700T strikes me as the best device available in its class-- at least for my purposes.

Wow...as a commensurate gadgeteer myself I would just love something like this alleged Google / Samsung Galaxy Nexus 10.1 with 2560 x 1600 resolution.

I can't compare the two. There's plenty of information here and the net comparing the two for you to make judgement on what will suit your needs and desires.
If you do choose the Infinity, I would suggest going with the smaller 32GB version because the cost of the larger is not money well spent. Since the Infinity has the SDHC/XC slot, you can get a lot more storage for the money in that route. Heck, wait for a sale, and you can get a lot more. Personally, I went with the smaller unit. Picked up the Scandisc 64GB microSDXC card for $50. I hardly use any storage on the internal, so even the SC card is a bit of waste. Really, unless you're going to have hundreds of apps, thousands of songs, or a lot of video stored, you really don't need that much memory.
Also, if you want to save a few dollars, you can pick up the dock for the Prime, TF201. It's the same thing, just a different color. It's nice you want want the extra battery, SD card slot, or USB ports. If you just want the keyboard, I would suggest just getting a blue tooth keyboard since you can use it on more than one device. It's essentially what I did, but I already had a portable keyboard I used with my smartphone.
If you're really indecisive, see if someone lives near you and see if you can meet up and check out their device. Handling is always better than reading.

I was just thinking about that myself. Mixed feelings though. I love having the extra battery in the dock. Keyboard is nice, but I tend to prefer Swype, even on a tablet. (using it now).

Thanks everybody for the remarks and opinions. No longer on the fence, I just popped for the 64gb version w/dock kb and a nice leather case. It should be in my hands tomorrow with the case following behind early next week. The biggest deciding factor for me was the "Keyboard vs "S" Pen" arguement, the KB won it.
All the responses I received only go to further my appreciation of what the XDA community has to offer.
My greatest difficulty will be in NOT installing a custom ROM right out of the box. LOL

I've had the tablet for about a month now (8010). I really love it. But I am sure many of you will agree that there is alot of room for feasible improvement. This was how I felt about the galaxy note phone that I currently have as well. Accordingly, I feel that when the galaxy note 2 10.1 tablet comes out... it will have significant OS improvements that will make it much better.... Only for this reason am I considering returning the product just to be more patient for the second generation... your thoughts?

The later generations are typically better, and there are typically later generations coming out all the time, so if you wait for the note 2 10.1, you will find some issues that will be improved on with the note 3 and so on, or some other device. That is how things work and progress, so it really depends on how much money you have if you are able to continue buying the latest and greatest every 6 months or so and want to take the time to get everything set up again. I figure I'll be fine with this one for a couple years and then upgrade a generation or so down the line or go to something else that becomes better. It is never ending as technology is constantly improving and methods for development are always improving and changing.
In order for companies to have money and staff for their proper research and development, people need to purchase their products on the market now and invest that way.

I am perfectly happy with my Note 10.1. I would suspect the Note 10.1 v2 won't be out until late next summer so you have to decide if you want to wait that long go for it.
As for improvements to this I would be curious what you think needs major improvement, so much so you would return this. I am actually quite impressed with the software on this. I have a Galaxy Nexus and Xoom both with Jellybean so I was a little hesitant getting a non Nexus device but I must say Samsung has done a pretty good job with this OS, even TouchWiz is pretty good. While we are promised Jellybean soon, and I am fairly confident we will get Key Lime Pie, I doubt we will see anything after that unless the dev community is able to make it happen. As of now I am good with this because the tablet is good enough not to need much more from the OS.
Speed and responsiveness thanks to the quad core and 2 Gb of RAM is impressive. Unlike the Tegra2 in my Xoom, I believe this hardware will hold up well for the next 2 years of app development. Even with Jellybean on the Xoom, the Note 10.1 with ICS is much smoother (thanks its internals).
All this to say I am very happy with this tablet.

It's kind of a bad comparison you're making. The Note 10.1 is the equivalent of the SGS3 and Note II both h/w and s/w wise. The OG Note I was equivalent to the SGS2 and OG G-Tab 10.1. Samsung sold only 700K OG G-Tab 10.1’s in the U.S. after spending $500K marketing them and distributing them via the U.S. carriers. That’s pretty pitiful considering it was deemed the most compelling Android tablet on the market and the best alternative to the iPad. All the Android tablet makers are also now making W8 tablets. Depending on their success with W8 you may see them greatly reduce or pull out of the Android tablet market completely.
This article talks about Android tablets in a post-W8 tablet world…

The only thing I think that the note misses:
A working and reliable office clone, with the ability to ink
A note taking program that records audio, as it takes not. Like livescribe does, or onenote does. I was quite suprised to find that this doesnt exist in android yet.
A keyboard accessory, that works like a clam. A tranformer type keyboard would be fabulous

Yup. I agree with the others. You're trying to decide if you should own the best android tablet or nothing?. The Note 10.1 stands out in front of the other tablets. So it your looking for the best tablet, this is it. Don't wait.
If you really would like to upgrade when the next model comes out, I would keep the Note 10.1 until then.

What you did not mention is what is that you do not like in the note.
Samsung has given note hardware that is not required at present like 2gb of ram one of the reasons for doing so is to make it future proof upto a certain extent, I belive a life of a laptop is 3 years, cellphone and tablet may be around 2 years and with period I think note would be good enough.
Yes the screen resolution on PAPER looks like it needs improvement but that was I think to keep price down because of the Spen.
But overall I believe its a great tablet.
One thing I can challeng no other tablet can do or will do for a long time to come is write a mail using spen believe me my handwriting on a scale to 1-10 is 1 and still it recognises it and thats something awesome

Thanks for all your responses! My biggest worry / problem with this tablet is to build quality. Overall, for a 500+dollar tablet I feel like its overall aesthetics aren't as sleek nor seem as durable as it should be. [really didn't mind the plastic build on my note phone but I guess a tablet it does seem a little cheap. Secondly, I think the biggest improvement can and will be made in themulti-app functionality. I enjoy the experience of it right now but it is not truly a polished function of Samsung's feature. Included should be hOw S- memo functions. LastIy the biggest disappointments Come from Polaris. I use a bluetooth keyboard to really Use my tablet as a laptop replacement for small tasks such as organising class notes. But I often am frustrated with how Polaris functions. Though the merit of the tablet is its s-pen the inability to be productiveWith a keyboard on Polaris makes me wonder if I should seriously consider Windows...

I think you have formed an opinion against the note if you think polaris is not good enough you can look at other office apps on market place spend few extra buck or dl it from sites
Looks are concerned well once in case they wont matter but I have the bluish grey like the one on SG3 and I love how the back looks but again I have case so its not visible. but then its onces taste. I feel looks wise tablet may not win awards but its not an ugly duckling either. its a look samsung has gone with for all its mobile devices so whether you like it or hate it you have to live with it

After owning the first Galaxy Tab, Asus Transformer and the Galaxy Tab 7.7 the 10.1 note is without a doubt the one i have enjoyed and used the most. The screen resolution is a slight let down after the 7.7 but everything else is best on the market at present so this is a keeper. Good for media and useful for business.

I think u should wait for the tablet that will launch in 2040... it would be perfect. Would have a full frame prismless dslr integrated, will be able to change physical shape, will have quantum computing cpu, 12800 ppi display, ffc (far field communication chip, allowing u to beam photos from distant planets without internet) and will be powered by a nuclear fusion cells that can outlast human life span on one single charge!
But in order to pass this time till next big thing comes... buy note 10.1. It brings a smile on my face everyday! Hopefully it will give u same joy!

This is good stuff. Personally I love this thing and I use it to about 1/10th of its ability. It's fast, smooth, and there is so much to it that I'm just enjoying reading and researching this thing. The great thing about this, and android in general, is options. We have lots of options.
I am always amazed about complaints, particularly in the cell phone arena. People have completely forgotten its a damn phone. If you want a super computer, well go buy one. Same can be said for the tablet market. If you are working on some complicated excel sheet, and you get pissed because something gets corrupted or something, chances are, you should be probably using your computer for that excel sheet that is mission critical for your 8am meeting. Don't get mad cause some formula driven excel sheet got corrupted why you tried to edit or create it on your tablet
My last rant will be about one of my iSheep friends who I let play with it. He held it, turned vertically, then horizontally, then vertically again, repeat a few more times etc. He snapped a couple pictures, then handed it back to me after 45 seconds and said, "this thing is terrible...its clunky and awkward". I looked at him, shook my head, and did the best sheep imitation I could muster. That cult is more then I can handle.

[Q] Help me pick Asus TF700 or Nexus 10

Ive read through some of the posts on here already but here is my dilemma. I do not own a tablet of any kind. Lately i have been wanting to get one for 2 reasons. Having somethhing to work on thats not a huge laptop. Note taking, apps, some games, and movies. The 2nd reason is for traveling, i want a tablet for my kids to watch movies on when we drive.
Now i starting looking into the Nexus 10, and love it, but with no expandable memory, i feel very limited getting it. Even at 32GB, - OS and formatting, i think you are only looking at around 27/27 GB of space. Considering an average movie is about 1.2 - 1.6 GB per, i wouldnt be able to put a whole lot on the nexus 10 before being maxed out.
Hence comes in the TF700, i love the fax that it has 32 GB + expandable memory, i feel very comfortable in that regard, but have read plenty of people with issues with the TF700. I also love the fact that i can get a keyboard with it as well.
My next thought it price.
A 32GB nexus 10 is 499, + tax and shipping through google im looking at around $550 out the door.
TF700, looks like i can get it through Amazon for around $470 with no tax where i live, and free shipping. So there is the cost factor that plays into my decision.
I would prefer to keep my devices fairly stock. I do own a LTE galaxy nexus and love it. I did unlock the bootloader, but i run it stock. I would prefer a OS that looks a lot like my phone but this isnt a requirement.
Any thoughts/advice/help would be appreciated.

If you're on the fence, I would maybe wait until a couple reviews come out. The Nexus 10 would be great with kids because of Android 4.2's new muli-user functionality. With regards to the storage.. I think the 32GB should be enough for what you need. Even without a microSD. I would buy the nexus 10, but if you're really on the fence just wait until a few days after it's released to watch some good reviews. :good:

The battery life added by the dock really helps out though with kids watching movies. I'm in the same boat, although my son has motion sickness, so no reading/watching/playing for him in the car, and his sister doesn't care about doing stuff in the car (yet). They're 4 and 2, respectively.
I also find that the tablet/dock combo makes it easier to just stand the device on a tabletop or something and let them watch. Gives them something to hang onto, as well, and when snapped shut, it's also a bit more safe than a 'naked' tablet.
32 GB is probably a lot of storage, but with all my clips of the Swedish Chef, the Muppets, Sesame Street, Family Guy (for me, not for the kids), Leprechaun Plop, Bobo the Rabbit and so and so forth, I'm looking into 12 GB! That's not even adding the Smurfs in wide-screen cinema deliciousness, and all the Ice Ages and whatnot.
No, I'm perfectly happy with the 700 and all its storage options. Also, don't forget the possibility for quickie file transfers by USB stick! I managed to get the Smurfs on a USB stick while on vacation -- shame the HD TV would play from USB stick... </geek hero>

I have a 12.5 inch laptop so I never bothered to get the keyboard for the tf700. The tf700 lags horribly and is very frustrating sometimes for simple web browsing. I was just getting to point of throwing my warranty away and installing cleanROm but I'm going to just get a Nexus 10. I hate that it doesn't have microSD but I don't think I'll miss it much because the microSD performance in the TF700 is so horribly slow I barely used it.

You didn't use CleanROM, though, so you're missing out on the performance this device can and will offer had you tried it. Out of the box comparisons taken as the norm -- which arevalid on XDA only for noobs or the faint-hearted -- maybe the Nexus would provide slightly better performance. I say 'maybe' because the file I/O is as bad on the Nexus devices (tested with N7 -- reference somewhere in the forums) as it is on the entire Transformer range. I would be very hesitant to jump on the Nexus 10 bandwagon -- chances are you'll find out you've not gained anything in terms of performance, and actually lost in terms of options, including but not limited to the storage options the 700 provides.
Oh, and ermmm.... I don't know where you get the slow MicroSD performance from, because the I/O issue concerns (mainly) the INTERNAL storage -- my memory cards are as fast as they are/were in other devices I put them in. No issues whatsoever.

Here's a novel idea. Research the specs on both. Look at issues raised in appropriate forums. Then pick the one that works for you.
Personally, I'm hoping you get the Nexus 10. I'd rather have people who can't make up their own mind, or do their own research, posting on another forum.

This really is a decision that can only be made by you... Besides that, it's really hard to say exactly how the Nexus 10 performs since nobody even has it yet! I mean actual users. It amazes me the number of people that are saying that the Nexus 10 is a "beast" and that it will easily outperform the TF700, etc - that is all speculation at this point. On paper, the TF700 looked like the perfect device too, but as we all know, it has issues that didn't show up in spec sheets (slow I/O, QC issues, etc).
However, if the keyboard dock and expandable storage are important to you, I'd go with the Infinity. We don't even know if the N10 will offer a keyboard dock - and if it does, we have no idea what kind of features it will have (extra battery, trackpad, USB ports, etc).
If you do go with the Infinity, I'd highly recommend the following:
- Buy it at a local Best Buy - this way, if you have any defects with the device, you can quickly and easily exchange it, without having to worry about shipping, etc...
- Get a SquareTrade warranty for it (with accidental damage coverage). For an extra $90 or so, you get 2 years of worry-free usage. It's also important for the next recommendation.
- Unlock the bootloader and install CleanROM as soon as you know that you have a defect-free TF700. With CleanROM, the device performs so much better than stock. Really, it's a must-have!
If you do the above, I think that you will be extremely happy with the TF700 and it's performance. Plus, you'll have the awesome keyboard dock and the expandability that you need.

We are going to be traveling for thanksgiving, so im planning on waiting until then to purchase one of these 2.
Im leaning to the nexus 10 32gb model, but well see if any specials or promotions pop up between now and then that might swing me the other direction.

Sounds like your issue is really about storage space.
I'm not up on all the Nexus 10 stuff. I'm sure it'll be a good device like the 7. Thus, I'm assuming no performance issues.
As for storage, the question is really is about how to do you plan on using your tablet. If you have a smartphone, that may help you. What kind of stuff do you store on it and how much of it. How many videos do you need to store on it versus want. So you want keep ten movies, that's about 16GB, which by your numbers, leaves 10GB for everything else. That's quite a bit storage for music and apps, unless you going to have a lot.
I think the issue is more of concern if you're going to be flashaholic or something like Boot Manager comes out for it so you can have and run mutliple roms.

If you don't want headache and working smooth and fast right out the box, get the Nexus 10. If you get the tf700 you going to have a lot of work ahead of you just to make it worth your money, even though the tf700 comes with more bells and whistles....

How do you know this? Have you used a Nexus 10? People sure are assuming a lot about the Nexus 10! How do we know that it doesn't have the same sort of I/O issues as the TF700? How do we know that it runs smooth out of the box once you start taxing it a little?
It might be true, but I'd wait until some XDA members get their hands on it before being so quick to assume that the Nexus 10 is going to be so perfect out-of-the-box...

This ^^ -- the Nexus 7 doesn't even fare that much better than the TF700, and it has a far smaller screen to power. I'm very glad with my purchase, and the Nexus 10 is not even on the radar.

im not sure why anyone hasnt mention On The Go. OTG is the ability to plug a USB memory stick into your tablet. there are actually two ways to do this. Tbe first is with an app you can buy for only a couple bucks, sorry i dont remember its name. The second is by unlocking and rooting your tablet.
i bought a nexus 7 when it first came out and knew id be traveking a lot later this year. so i roited and unlocked it. right niw i have 4 thirty-two gig sticks and 2 sixty-four gig sticks that i use with it on a regular basis.
ohh and sorry you do need an app called stickmount but its free.

i bought a nexus 7 when it first came out and knew id be traveking a lot later this year. so i roited and unlocked it. right niw i have 4 thirty-two gig sticks and 2 sixty-four gig sticks that i use with it on a regular basis.
ohh and sorry you do need an app called stickmount but its free.

I bought the huge adapter thing.
I hardly ever use it...actually I plugged it in once to check for function.
Works...it's kind of a waste of money for me anyway.
One of my least necessary purchases.

Android 4.2 was released to VOSP (or whatever it's called today.) Not being an Android user yet, I have no idea how long before a ROM will be available for the TF700 that includes the user profiles function. I too would LOVE that, having 2 kids.
I think Engadget's review was a great assessment of the two devices:
"In fact, other than a relative lack of resolution (1,920 x 1,200 vs. this guy's 2,560 x 1,600) the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 is, we think, an overall better package. It's thinner, lighter, faster, has a much better camera, offers better battery life (particularly if you opt for the keyboard dock) and, frankly, we'd take the brightness and contrast of that 600 nit, Super IPS+ panel over this one with its extra pixels."
People are really obsessed with screen resolution now though, like they are with camera megapixels. Even though most content (web pages, etc.) the higher resolution poses no advantage whatsoever.

I'm also in the same boat, trying to decide between the two. I have a thread over in the Nexus 10 forum and unsurprisingly, the nexus 10 is winning the argument there with most people complaining about the lag and memory problems on the Infinity.
I'm stlil undecided though as I really liked playing around the with my brothers TF201, so the Infinity should be a step up i'd imagine.
Tough choice!!!!!!! Arrggghhhh.
