Mobile phones w/ customizable voice commands? - General Topics

I check with the group periodically, so see if there are any phones on the market that function like the old Motorola Moto X Pure or other Motorola Phones with Moto Voice software. With those phones, You could create custom wake up phrases, go back and forth through your emails or messages and have the read aloud, get GPS coordinates, and more all 100% hands free, which was great if you drive a lot for a living.
Sadly, Lenovo discontinued this. (Never a big fan of motorola phones after that)
Anybody seen or heard of any phones like that on the market?
Thanks!

Why IPhone will beat them all.

After looking at the presentation of IPhone 3G v3.0 and already have read the articles about the WM v6.5 and v7.0, a huge disappointment came over me.
You see I am a top shouter in my environment for the HTC phones which are all equipped with the WM OS's.
The greatest impression on me where some articles about guys(who seemed in my eyes a real priority on this, i am dutch so not quickly impressed by anything), who wrote all similar story's about the WM v6.5/7.0. Stating Microsoft is not at all doing anything to compete with the Google and APPLE OS's. There are just very few improvements and absolutely not at all impressive enough as the IPhone OS.
Reading some article they are looking for a lead developer for the new core for WM v7.0 are not honored and contradicting, like saying oke guys i know the current OS is ****ty so we need to start over, can anyone help us?
That is not the sort of message I as WM lover like to hear.
It seems that Apple is just about the only one who is really listening to the users and they are working their ass off getting all requested functionality integrated. APPLE have done more on the OS in 1 year then Microsoft did on all development of the WM versions.
I am working at an IT company where the IPhone is making a serious entry and I am working at support and people asking me for information getting the IPhone working with the company applications. and guess what, it is sooooooo much easier getting it setup then every other WM-device i have seen. And they seem to shrink in number at the company.
Now I am really in love with the HTC-devices, but i am slowly getting confused by the latest IPHONE OS.
I expect that Microsoft will loose this battle due to their arrogance and dragging all major mobile company's down with it. So expect another crisis in a year or 3 because now the smart phones are booming but people will come to their senses and they switch to IPhone after their subscriber to the providers has ended.
So please bring me to my senses and say I am totally wrong!!
yes and no
the problem is migrators. people whove had there nokias and stuff then want a better device. theyll run to iphone dueto the flashy marketing and support
bu winmo is more like an old pair of sneakers. sure theyre ugly aan dirty
but they do the job they were built to do. in my opinion as long as they do there job making it work i can do my job making it look pretty. coz id rather get ther in my old confy sneakers to get there than getting blisters from a new pair
i dont think any die hard winmo fan will move not really because at the end of the day we always go back to those old trainers
ive got a headache now
stop making me use my brain
i went from iphone to iphone 3g to windows mobile
i prefer my diamond to be honest even thou iphone can do alot more in ways the diamond does more in other ways
hands down id rather go with diamond or pro
@jayjay8585
Thanks for your response.
I hope you are familiar with ice skating?
They where skating years and years on the normal skates and the fastest times stayed longer and longer on the list.
Then someone decided to change the skate(klikskate, the iron comes half lose when lifting the skate) so significantly everybody said out loud that will not work, so they tried it a bit but went back to their old skates(sneakers).
Until someone who always was just under the top 10 decided, oke I reeeeeeealy going to try this and trained for 2 years on it.
So the next major tournament this person broke all long standing records.
Now everybody is using the new ice skates and up until now, records keep broken almost every new major tournament.
Shortly: I half agree with the sneaker story but it will not hold on the long term.
Microsoft just messed up to big, so if Bill wants to see another billion or 2 added on the Forbes list he has to get serious on this.
Windows Mobile 7 is not even beta yet so how can you be making comparisons with that OS? And while apple has added features to bring it on par with modern smartphones I personally am too used to the freedom of using a device of my own choosing with whatever carrier I choose and not being tied to using apple software and hardware products.
Here is what I have to say about the iPhone. The iPhone............
iPhone = Flashy Fashiontoy laden with DRM Crap no one here wants. Period.
Yup!

Quoted for the Mo-Fo'm truth!
How about the g1? It listens to its users the users and devs nake this phone better everydaay. I have had my for just over a week and don't know how I livd without it. I love how it works It can do all the iphone can and more. My main thing is it needs flash player other than that. also anyone seen or have any ideas on the new plam?
I personally wouldn't touch the G1 even if my life depended on it... Someone has to remove all the frickin' Google Crap from the OS (mandatory googlemail acc, anyone ?) before I'd be willing to shell out a few hundred bucks for one of these.
I'm not willing to let Google put a leash up my ass...
To the above guy. Besides making a mail account that's ur only leash. That beats being to to steve and bill in my opion. U can change the browser and well just about every u can get a lot of apps on line. U don't have to use the market that came on the phone everything is open.
the G1 I tested required a Googlemail Account.
Granted, I already have one and only Spam gets redirected there, but I don't want Google to know who i have as Contacts on my Sim and my Appointments no one has to read either.
Google on G1 = No Phone for me
Well whre are getting that they do that? And if they do why dosent everyone else? I figuer all cell phone data is almost public anyways
just wanted to add my 2 pence worth.
I've only had 2 WM devices so far, the XDA Exec and now the Touch Dual.
As much as I've enjoyed playing with these, I'm starting to really like the look of the iPhone. Everyone I speak to that has one say they love it because it does what is says on the lid. It works.
I'm fed up with having to reset my phone when it crashes on an incoming call, or re-syncing it to my BT car Hands free set...............
I've had to work hard and rely on the good devs here (thanks folks)to be able to get to a point where my phone is just about stable.
The iPhone is starting to look like a possability when my contract is up in six months
WM 6.5 will make it better as well as ROM Cookers. I have the Iphone 3G - in the box. Yes its flashy and its more fluid I like the control I have over my Touch HD. I like being able to flash it and try it out. I like the fact that I can change the BATTERY out on it. I like the ability to sync with Outlook, I like the fact that there are many many apps for the WM 6.1 and 6.5(when it becomes available).
And I like my screen resolution and Garmin XT NAV
Oh yeah.. Did I mention that I hate ITUNES and DRM?

you do realize that you can turn off syncing, which means that you wont send any data to the google acct. so none of your contacts/appointments will leave your phone, and gmail wont sync. if you root your G1 you dont even have to use a google acct.
This is an article from BRIGHTHAND:
Cut, Copy, and Paste
Confirming the earlier rumors, iPhone 3.0 will -- finally -- allow iPhone users to cut-and-paste and copy-and-paste. Naturally, the process for selecting text will take advantage of this device's multi-touch screen. This feature will be available in Apple's own software and third-party apps.
And it extends to more than just text. Users will be able to copy images and paste them into an email.
MMS, A2DP, Etc.
iPhone 3.0 will also mark the arrival of other features long available in the iPhone's competitors, including MMS messaging, Stereo Bluetooth, device search, and voice memos.
In addition, landscape support is being added to more of the bundled applications.
Apple is also going to release a new SDK (software developer kit) for handling streaming audio and video, including HDTV streaming.
Still No Multitasking
Apple had some good news and bad news for users. The bad news is that it's still not allowing multitasking because running third-party applications in the background is more than the device can handle. Scott Forstall, Apple SVP iPhone Software, who handled much of today's presentation, said that an IM application running in the background reduced the iPhone's standby battery time by 80%.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think the iPhone is able to beat anybody yet, as you can see, the above upgrade or fix to the coming iPhone 3 are qualities that should have been there since it's first release. They are still playing catch-up to Windows Mobile.
The only thing I like about the iPhone is the speed. Other than that, nothing else. With more powerful processor coming out, this will definitely be a brighter future for WM.

Sorry to see you are having trouble, but for me, my setup is very stable. No crashes nor freezes, so I am happy with Windows Mobile. BT works flawlessly too. I believe stability is related to what applications you have installed. I have about 350 applications and games installed, you just need to try them one by one and see which one causes the problem. This is the proceedure I do each time I upgrade my device. By the way, I have an HTC Advantage X7510. I just use my HTC Universal as the test subject nowadays.
I'd like to thank those brave enough to say that the iPhone does in fact pose a huge problem to WM, and those brave enough to say that they're willing to move away. Another thing I'd like to say is that being tied to a carrier/network that you don't like is not actually an argument against the iPhone, rather the circumstances surrounding it. Let's keep this thread based around an SIM-unlocked iPhone for a change. Also, let's just look at the OS, and not the extras HTC/Samsung/SE has overlayed on top.
Now, let's face it, WM is losing appeal- fast. WM is dynamic and flexible- almost like an open-source OS, but the UI is outdated and still bears an uncanny resemblance to it's oldest predecessor almost 10 whole years ago. Also, it can get laggy, and crashes even on stock ROMs, so there's another bunch of disadvantages.
Not much left. Let's hope WM7 saves MS.
I agree 100% with cktlcmd.
Thanks for putting it exactly how I would,
so I don't have to think.
This is what I'm feeling so far.......... (my two cents)
I love my wimo (6700, 8525, tilt and now touch Pro) and at first I use to tell people that only way that iPhone is making a killing is because how they advertised the phone.
People with iPhones use to be like your phone looks and feels like a brick. I will tell them how the wimo can do all types of things, so they started coming back to me and showing how once they jail break the phone they can do about all most the same thing. I would laugh and say well you still can't get mms, teathering, or cut/paste......3.0 is coming out for the iPhone, now I feel like hiding from the ones I laughed at.
If Microsoft is reading......please help us out, because the reason I love the phones is because they can do wonders but now I'm starting to feel like an old school guy with and old phone not willing to give up.............We (I hope I can speak for all the wimo people) spend at alot of time and money on these phone and just want a little something back, beside a new phone......think about the inside the phone and help us out so we can stay and be the top dogs again.

What will Android do that the TP2 won't?

Don't slam me because I admit I'm a NOOB. I love my TP2 . . . best phone I've ever owned. Am I missing out by not waiting for an android phone?

I have had these 3 phones..Iphone, G1 and HTC Touch Pro 2. The Iphone is the best phone i have owned but the AT&T service killed it! Just Bad service all the way around....Same as the G1 with T-Mobile....seemed like a good phone but NO SERVICE! I wanted to hate the TP2 because of the windows mobile part of it but I have to say I like it very much. I also like the fact im back on Verizon. I am like you and thinking I might miss out on something by not getting the new Android phone but I would stick with the TP2 for awhile.its a good phone.
Won't lie to you and tell you I know much about android. What I do know, however, is that there is a site (link below) that compares "PalmPre vs. iPhone vs. WinMo vs. Android vs. BlackBerry"
In it the writer in the article had very little love for the Android system (at this time), but eluded to the fact that it could be the next big thing, someday. Take a look for yourself and decide.

That article is 9 months old, I haven't even heard of the android at that time( I really wasn't into phones that much then anyways, but still ). And he was basing all his tests on the G1, I hope someone writes an updated article of that( I like his style ), and compares it to the droid that is out for verizon. I personally have 24 days until I can get a phone, it's between the TP2, and the droid, but I hear they are in the works of porting android 2 to the TP2 so...

I agree, I have sent them an e-mail requesting the same article, but updated with new software/firmware/hardware.
I would recommend that you, and anyone else who wants it, do the same.

Once there, click on Request review, do their little non-bot verification thing and then be sure to include the following:
1. The Original Article Link - http://www.mobilitysite.com/2009/01/palmpre-vs-iphone-vs-winmo-vs-android-vs-blackberry-fight/
2. That you request the same article, but updated with the new software versions, Firmware, and hardware.
I've used both. After I got past the initial excitement of the newness of it, I didn't find anything that gave one phone a significant advantage over the other. At first, it seemed really cool, but it was more of a new car effect. Once I settled in the coolness faded and it was just another OS. If choosing between an Android phone and a Windows phone, I would let the hardware be your guide, not the OS. Just my $0.02.
Edit... actually, I should mention one area Android does shine, not surprisingly, it's integration with Google. If you are a heavy Google apps user then Android wins. Otherwise, my comments above apply.
Again, I don't know much about android... However, I've just gotten used to WinMo and it's seemless integration with Windows Operating systems through it's various Mobile versions of Windows Apps (Word, Excell, Outlook, etc) (FYI, I rarely, if ever, Use Active Sync, which is a piece of $#!+). I've also gotten really used to the wide range of free apps and endless stream of mods for WinMo Phones.
I believe that it really depends on 1) what you are use to, 2) what you are looking for, and 3) what, if anything, you are comfortable compromising on. Bottom line, I cannot make up someone's mind, only offer my opinion and experience and encourage someone to make up their own mind.

I would be interested to see how this works. The only thing I really use from the Google apps is the Google Maps. I do have the GPS software, and Bing. However, I've found that usually (not always) when I cannot find something with one GPS/Map software, one of the other two will find it. But to say I use that heavily is not totally true. I also use the other apps very little, if any. So Overall, though I would like to see how it works, I don't believe that Android is for me.
After spending all weekend with the Droid. There are a few things it does better.
Integrated search, and voice control. Secondly it is much quicker to switch tasks. Amazon MP3 store is really great to have integrated as well
Aside from that even playing with OpenHome skins, I think the most recent version of HTC Sense 2.5 for the TP2 is a much better interface.
Android claims it is such an open platform but they dont have sites like PPC or XDA to support their phones yet.
Windows Mobiles biggest problem is its windows mobile. Its not the trend, and there is so much negative press about it that people overlook it.
I love my windows mobile device. I have the TP2. I have seen where people have flashed the TP to Andriod and it seems to work well. Im thinking of doing it to my old TP. The Driod is very cool. My store just got a shippment in. But it hasnt impressed me enought to switch. Flash my old TP maybe. Since it just sits in its box.
Tried it out, but didn't like it. Android isn't really an operating system it's more like a "skin" for a really poor operating system.
System preferences and commands aren't congregated in one place.
Apps can't be saved to an external memory card. You can't back them up, either.
Preferences and customization is limited, compared to what you can do with Windows Mobile.
As far as being an "idiot proof" OS it still has a pretty high learning curve, and compared to the iPhone, which has an elegant UI, one that I respect tremendously despite my dislike of AT&T and Apple products in general, it doesn't measure up.
Last of all, call quality sucks compared to my TP2. I've been on a train and people can still hear me clear as day.
Win Mob 6.5
Windows mobile is not at all horrible.I’ve had the best experience using winmo 6.5 on HTC HD2.The QWERTY keypad makes it soo easy to send messages, its even helpful for browsing.it Even has the in-built apps such as facebook widget,MSN widget etc.
Android has an excellent feature, where if you click on a phone number in a webpage, it will dial that number for you. TP2 can't do that. This gives Android a HUGE usability advantage over TP2 (and other WM phones).

actually... TP2 DOES do that...
I use both and they are both good phones. I would not give up my TP2 to use a Droid full time, but it does have its advantages.
The Droids screen is nice, but so is the TP2. The keyboard on the TP2 blows the Droids away.
The voice search on the DROID is awesome, much better and accurate than TellME, which I do have working on my TP2.
Droid is more responsive and the Android marketplace is great, but I have XDA for my TP2
Droid ships with a 16GB memory card, which is nice.
I like and use both the tilting screen and TV out on the TP2. Droid does neither. Just my 2 cents

Um, seriously, man... this has been a feature of WinMo Phones for quite a while. In fact, most apps that can display a phone number (GPS, Google, Windows Live, any browser that I've used, etc) do allow you to click on them and call them. Most of them require that you confirm it, making sure you pressed the right one, but, other than that the functionality is there.
The only thing that I like Google/Google Maps over the rest of them is that when you dial a number from it's search list, it will transfer the name of that listing (e.g. "Tom's Tire") to the call history and associate it with that number. This does make it a lot easier to go back and find a number that I wouldn't have normally saved. Other than that, they are all pretty even.

Ummm, seriously, out-of-the-box TP2 (I know I just took mine out of the box) the TP2 *doesn't* do this. Is there a special setting for this or does Verizon (where I got my TP2) disable this feature? I don't think you have your facts straight... WM might be able to do this, but TP2 *does not*

Well, I have the Sprint TP2.... I've never really had this problem. To tell the truth, I am not a big fan of Verizon after they screwed ma a few years back. It wouldn't surprise me if they did.
On a separate note, there are a few places I have seen that it doesn't come up as a clickable link, but that is usually due to poor formatting.
To tell the truth, I rarely use the function. I find TeleNav (or Sprint Navigation, as it is on the sprint phone) to be a much easier way of doing things. Google Maps, Bing, and various other apps are also excellent way of searching for phone numbers. Both Bing (Initally called Windows Live "out of the box" but prompts for update soon after) and TeleNav (I know is available on Sprint phones and most AT&T phones) are available "out of the box" and can do what you are looking for.
If I cannot find a number through them, I know of many mobile sites that offer look-up services that show the phone numbers as links, regardless of what browser you are using.
I guess I had taken it for granted that phone numbers have always been available to me and with very little work, if any.
Maybe it needs further looking into, by both us the consumers, and the makers of our software.
Good luck with Verizon.

What?? Are you sure? So if you go to: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/pa/recordedforecasts.php (using Opera or IE on your TP2) the phone numbers there are links that you can click on? How did you do that? Mine doesn't and right now it is bone stock (about to flash NRG LEO ROM). I have a Verizon TP2.
I'd much prefer Android over WinMo. I tried 6.5 roms on the vogue and disliked it even more than 6.1.
Granted I haven't got to look into WinMo's new market, but the Android one is nice.
Google Maps navigation in 2.0 is really nice.
Push on my Gmail.
Nice integration on my Google Voice.
Or Guava with my Gizmo5 account so I can use Google Voice over 3g data for free phone calls. I have yet to find a good sip program to integrate with gizmo5 and google voice in WinMo.
How much of Android is ported to the TP2? I'm looking at upgrading and don't like Sprint's Android options at the current moment. Wondering about picking up the TP2 and wondering if I could sale it for enough to grab the next android phone. Unless the android port is 100%.

Samsung Omnia or HTC Droid Eris???

I currently have a Samsung Omnia with Verizon Wireless service. It seems to work fairly well now that I'm using SPB Mobile Shell and few other cool utilities. However, the reviews I've read say that there's a good chance it's gonna start glitching on me and I'm gonna hate it in a few months.
I just got an e-mail from Best Buy about a $50 discount on the HTC Droid Eris. I had already been considering switching to Android because it's where things are heading, and there are more apps available out of the box. The chief complaint I hear about Droid Eris is the battery life being awful and the fact that you can't install apps on your storage card, which quickly fills up your system memory.
I'm wondering if anyone else has an opinion on the matter. Is Android gonna be better in the long run or should I just stick it out for 2 years and hope for good WinMo updates? Is the Eris simply better hardware than the Omnia? Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Welcome to forums

Go with HTC & XDA combined for customizing & support.
+1 Droid Eris!
I had Omnia for a year..ran all sorts of custom roms...lvoedit..but then it finally started getting slower and slower compared to other phones...
today i got my droid eris.....

SWEET!!!!! ahhah..this thing has tons of customization ability..as soon as people start messing with it...it'll be a hit...super fast...super sensitive...
did i mention android??? [2.0 update comes out early 2010...cant wait!] only thing better than droid eris for verizon customers is droid.. [its bigger & faster, but heavier]
Eris Droid has no bluetooth dialing capabilities
I will be returning the Eris Droid that I bought today. After trying for some time to get the bluetooth voice dialer to work, I googled it and found that THOUSANDS of disgruntled Eris buyers discovered that there is no capability for it and say they will return it to the Verizon store. The instructions say that you can MAKE and receive calls via the Bluetooth headset. The only way you can do that is with voice dialing. Every cheap cell phone and smartphone I've had for 6 years has had that capability. In a world where using a cell phone while driving is unlawful in many states, this is NOT a trivial feature. This was either an engineering fiasco or a marketing scheme whereby Google and Verizon and Motorola can make more money when they introduce the upgraded BLUETOOTH VOICE DIALER enhanced droid.

[Q] Blackberry 9800 Torch or Dell Streak?

Which one should I buy? I've never used Android before and only used Blackberry years ago on the Pearl Flip. The useless sale guy at Optus Shop say he likes them both and cannot recommend one over another.
I want at-least a day's worth of battery life. I recharge my phone nightly so I'm not really that picky if it lasts longer then from like 9 am to 9 pm.
What I do on ma phone?
600-1000 texts a week
Always signed into MSN, constantly chatting sometimes
Always checking Facebook or sending messages over Facebook
Retrieving about 10 emails a month. No replies
Maybe a music track download every week
Always playing music. I like my music LOUD
Some web-surfing such as reading reviews on new gadgets
Lots of Google Maps when out and about
Picture viewing such as from files sent over MSN
Tethering phone to laptop sometimes
So Torch or Streak and why? Dunno but the Streak is so big, wouldn't I kinda look like a tool walking around in the mall holding it while checking a text? Also does Android have a official looking MSN Client?
I just don't know which one to get. Both sound amazing.
i would go for the torch based on your demands.
And based on the fact that i played with this device

Streak. The Torch is a mediocre device at best, poor quality build, and generally poor as a device period. The Streak is large because is a pad/phone in one. I was going to get the Streak until I decided on my captivate. My fiancee works for AT&T and she generally has nothing good to say about the Torch, or blackberrys in general, they're either hit or miss, and the Torch was a miss.

if you look at the needs of your reply post, I am more inclined to choose Dell Streak ... one advantage of Dell streak is a larger screen than Torch .. more than that to your desired needs can be found on both the handset .. with a larger screen ... lets you browse and mail management will be better ... more than that all your needs can be met both of them ...
My experience managing email (gmail, yahoo and Corporate mail address) in the dell streak can I do as his only previous Odin. Another case when using google maps, my Dell Streak is the best and more details ....
in 4shared.com I tried to download some mp3 files, and I was satisfied with the audio quality dell streak .. but all returned from the source audio file ...
overalls .. I really like this streak dell ... more have fun and do more ...
bye bye blackberry ...
I would never touch another BlackBerry. Not only is the hardware ancient, but the software is just crap. The app selection is pitiful, the interface is outdated, and customization of a BB is a major pain in the ass. Not to mention that RIM is just horrible at pushing out new OS updates. I'd rather have a crappy Android device over the best BlackBerry ANY day.

BlackBerry is going out of style and they can't keep up with the competition. Go with the Streak. You won't be sorry.

If you only are choosing between the Streak and Torch, I would go with the Streak. Android is better hands down. I have had two Blackberries in my life for personal and corporate and will never go back. I have a question for you now. If you don't like the big screen on the Streak, which I don't blame you, would you consider a different Android device? There are devices that have a smaller screen yet out perform the Streak with ease.

The Torch is nothing but the Rim and more popular version of the Palm Pre anyways.
Just to clarify with some people because I know some people will say this, I know Palm and Rim have no relations. It is a joke because Palm came out with the Pre around the time the Iphone came out, which was about 2-3 years ago, and RIM released the Torch that is about the same specs as the Pre.

[Q] Do you guys think regular phones are necessary?

As the development of Mobile system, more and more phones are with smart OS, Android, iOS, Windowsphone, Windowsmobile, Symbian etc. People can do things that previously have to be done on computer.
So I think regular phones will have no space to exist. What you guys think?
No, as long as there are people, like my parents, who don't text, barely email, and would rather use voice, then a dumbphone is best for them.
In the next couple of years because next g and 4g and older fones won't be able to work

Well take it this way - a lot of those dumbphones can perform pretty much the same tasks as smartphones.
Obviously not all and usually at a lower performance, but they can. From memory J2me was a pretty wide API and worked across just about every single device.
The distinction between feature phone and smart phone has really been shaky at best.

+1. There are a lot of people who don't need smartphones and they'll not disappear in a several years. Personally I have a dumbphone and don't like to change it in near future
As a technical reason it can be a difference in battery runtime.
Maybe the OP is referring to landline phones? If so, then yes it is possible in the near future that landline phones go the way of the telegraph. Not only that, but due to texting and MMS, 20% of the next generation of high school graduates won't even need an email address.
Which kind of phones do you reffer?
Which kind of phones do you reffer when answer about regular phones? Thanks
It depends on the most frequent use - i personally think that smartphones will completely replace the dumbphones in the near future (the old ones will eventually become unusable due to advance of technology or carrier restrictions)
Old phones won;t even exist in some years
In my opinion, there are still users who need feature phones; why get a smart phone when all you will do is send messages and call. However, I do agree feature phones will one day be something of the past.

Yes - always
although they m8 not be so useful in their current form factors and probably go thru a complete transfrmation, regualr fones fr d purpose of calling alone will always find deir need
With the wages as low and the prices of smarthphones as high as they are now, consider your argument invalid.
Businesses will continue to use regular phones. They are much cheaper to manage and maintain a stable connection. I would hate to see everything go to skype seeing that I don't want to see somebody all the time

I'd really disagree with this one. Texting and MMS has been around for a huge time and it hasn't even taking a dent at email usage.
Hell texting has always been more popular amongst <20 year olds than calling, at least here.
I'm actually seeing the opposite trends. Easy chat and mail integration into new smartphones is cutting into SMS usage.
What we'll see though is smartphone|feature phone feature parity as time goes on. We're allready getting there, the difference being that feature phones don't support native third party apps but instead only j2me runtime based ones.
Otherwise formfactor wise we're pretty much equal and once we have decent battery tech again we should see smartphones lasting at least a little while on a charge as well.
