Stop system update on Nokia 4.2 - General Questions and Answers

Hi I have a Nokia 4.2 that updated to Android 11. This was really bad as it stopped NFC working with my daughters freestyle libre sensor
I reverted back to android 10 using adb and fastboot (switching active partition).
Once android 10 was back up and running I disabled automatic updates in developer tools which stated that it would stop updates applying on restarts.
However last night the device rebooted itself and force installed android 11 so i am back to where i was a week ago.
Is there anyway to stop the device updating when you have android updates in the a/b slot manner? Any help would be really appreciated

I think I may have found what I did wrong the first time.
I followed this guide https://www.techmesto.com/downgrade-nokia-2-2-from-android-10-to-android-9-pie/
When the device booted in android 10 I did not connect to wifi to stop it pulling updates, however I think it used mobile network to check for updates.
This time I clicked the setup offline button and so far it is not showing any system updates with the developer tools / automatic system updates disabled
Fingers crossed this is working now

Pixel switchting active slot without any action?

I'm having some issues with my pixel:
Unlocked, but Stock (no root, no twrp) on Android Beta NPG05E (7.1.2). Yesterday morning I've had some issues with hangouts (receiving, but not sending any messages), so I restarted my phone.
On the first reboot it was stuck with the dots animation, at some point i restarted it again by pressing the power button for a long time (like 30 sec?).
This time the phone was booting into OS but there are even more issues: Fingerprint reader not working ("hardware not available") - but gestures do, displays that mobile data is disabled (but is actually enabled), having no notifications at all, the navigation bar button to switch apps does not work (vibration feedback, but no action triggered) and probably a lot more.
Next I checked for Software Updates and also found one - the beta OTA! Seeing this I remembered that the beta dialog was not present at the last boot up and also noticed that Android Version is 7.1.1
This also explains all the issues - going back from Beta to stock is not supported without wipe.
(now i know: --> Somehow the phone might have switched between the two slots?)
While all this happened while I was still on vacation, I then applied the OTA once again and was back to 7.1.2 - but the issues weren't gone. Only Fingerprint reader was working again, the other problems remained.
So next I would probably need to do a factory reset - but I wanted to make a backup with TitaniumBackup first:
Booting TWRP RC1, flashing SuperSU 2.79 SR3, reboot --> no binary found (?)
So I checked and I was back to 7.1.1 again!
Using TWRP I could see that I was on slot B - the build.prop says NMF26U (7.1.1), while on slot A was NPG05E (7.1.2 Beta). So I switched the active slot to A and was on 7.1.2 Beta again - and SuperSU is running well (which means SuperSU installer actually installed on the correct slot, but somehow it got switched right after flash or during reboot).
Did somebody experience something similar? Do you know if there is anything else (besides an OTA) which changes the active slot?
I will probably go for a TB backup now, factory reset and restore the user apps.

How do I figure out what is using up all my data?

I typically only use between 1GB and 2GB per month of data. However, this month I was notified that I had exceeded my 4GB limit. I increased the limit to 7GB and within 4 days that was exceeded. I've now shut off all cellular data. When I look in Settings > Data Usage > Cellular Data Usage it shows 7.25GB of data used by Android OS. If I tap on Android OS it lists a bunch of apps like com.qti.service.colorservice and com.quicinc.cne.CNEService.CNEServiceApp. I don't know if this list is sorted by which service/app used the most data and there's no more detail I can attain by tapping on the apps listed under Android OS.
Since I have dates and times for some of the largest downloads (868MB on March 27, 12:57AM for example), is there somewhere in the file system where I can see a list of IP addresses connected to and their timestamps to perhaps narrow down who/what is sucking up all my data?
Is there a more thorough way of wiping the phone than a factory reset?
Anybody seen this before and have any suggestions?
Did you root or mod it and are missing an uldate? Even with check for updates turned off people are reporting the same thing.

I did root it. Then I found out I couldn't get OTA updates anymore. I side loaded the 7.1.1 Sailfish update, build NOF26W. I'm not sure if a new update has since released. After side loading the update I lost root and was unable to get it back.
Months ago, when I first rooted the phone I had the same problem where the OS would continually download the OTA update, fail installation and re-download it. At the time I stopped it through rooting and disabling the update service directly. When I lost root after sideloading the OTA update I figured it wasn't a big deal since I could turn off updates in the Developer Options.
So you're saying the turn off updates option doesn't work?

It does not work for everyone. Seen it a fair amount, you are the second one today. The other is over in the XL forum.
There is a new update every month. First Monday of the month is when they are released. You are one behind and a new one will be out in two days.

Google wants me to RMA the phone. Not sure how that's going to help though since it's a software problem.
I'm having the same issue. But I have one month 80 gig download this month I'm already at 35 gigs. I was rooted at one point wanted my updates so I updated root is gone but everything works fine but ever since then I have been getting these massive download constantly either on Wi-Fi or cellular I turned off so many things that is not funny backup everything and it's still happening hits exactly the same as the person that first created this thread.

If you're seeing gigs of data usage attributed to Android OS then it's likely repeatedly downloading OS updates that are failing installation. That's what happened to me.
You are correct I tried to download my update and it errored out when installing step 2 then redownloaded so in developer I turned off automatically download updates which I don't think it will help as I turned this off before I reset my room so I think it's stuck just redownloading. Have you figured out why our download is failing? Does it have to do with root that we removed?

Removing root isn't enough. I couldn't get updates to work until I installed a factory stock image and relocked the bootloader.
As far as I know there are 3 options.
1.) Root, block updates and never update
2.) Root, block updates, side load your updates and re-root each time to re-block updates
3.) Run stock, unrooted with locked bootloader and take automatic updates

You modded something while rooted that it doesnt like, or root is not completely removed. You need to flash the update yourself.

im unlocked, no root, no twrp (verizon edition)
and i take OTA all the time...
I think root and twrp kills ota, not bootloader unlocking......
just an fyi
I think root does also because it's worked fine when I first unlocked bootloader. Also I reinstalled stock room and still can't get it's it has to be what root does to phone
Did you try disable the Automatic System Updates from the Developer Options?
High Data Use by com.quicinc.cne.CNEService.CNEServiceApp
I ran into this issue too after traveling (driving) several days on a rooted Pixel XL (with TWRP and a custom kernel), which at the time was a month behind (running NKG47L, the June OTA for "T-Mobile, Fi carriers, and Rogers").
When I got back from the trip I noticed the phone had used much more data than expected, something along the lines of 75MB per hour (almost a GB a day) -- when all that had been done with the phone (that would use data) was use navigation. Further digging showed the data use was attributed to a process named com.quicinc.cne.CNEService.CNEServiceApp, and some Googling turned up threads that mentioned QualComm and/or T-Mobile and/or Google FI cellular service, but not many examples of how people actually fixed it.
In my case it was fixed (without losing data/apps), by manually updating to the latest OTA (with this approach), and then re-rooting. But I should also mention I switched from the "T-Mobile, Fi carriers, and Rogers" series (which for July would be NKG47M), to the generic Pixel XL series (NJH47D for July).
My suspicion is the phone was downloading the July OTA with cellular data, then tried to apply it (which failed either because the phone was rooted, or had TWRP, and/or had a custom kernel), and was then repeating that sequence every hour.
So, at least in my case, the moral of the story seems to be... If you're rooted and/or running a custom recovery/kernel, make sure you're on the current OTA before spending a lot of time away from recognized WiFi until Google fixes this! Or, as mentioned in an earlier post, have "Automatic system updates" disabled in Developer Options.
com.quicinc.cne.CNEService.CNEServiceApp and com.qti.service.colorservice are backdoor trojans (they have a few other names but all belong to the same group) to access and monitor your device. You need to check to see if it establishes any strange background connections. Please don't ask me how I know but I feel that I have the responsibility to warn everyone.

[GUIDE] How to get OEM Unlock without waiting (OREO)

Hi there, since I am frequent flasher and angry about the changes to the bootloader, I made a new guide how to instantly unlock OEM without waiting.
I update my device frequently every month with stock rom and root it afterwards.
Therefore it's annoying but thanks to samsung it is what it is.
Fast drop as always:
Set up your device until you're on the home screen.
Enable Dev Settings
Disable Automatic Updates
Disable Keep mobile data on
Go to date and set it back 7 days ago.
Go to update, disable automatic updates and check for new updates.
Restart your device into stock recovery and clear cache.
Restart back to system and set the date again 7 days back.
Restart your device once again.
Restore automatic time (which will set up the actual date) and restart once again.
Go to dev options and check if OEM unlock is enabled.
Sometimes it's not working in the first try, but I need other people to test it.
The last few times it worked for me that way straight.
man
come on man if it doesnt work i well have wiped the phone for no reason. i am looking for a way too :/ we need people who do it like everyday..
Didn't work
I tried three times. Failed to restore OEM Unlocking.
me too, was trying over 3 times still hidden until I enable mobile data, toggle on/off "software automatic update" repeatedly.
So in my case, try to add below step..
- enable mobile data.
- toggle on/off software automatic update repeatedly.
- Check again on Developer mode.
tested on S8 G950FD with Latest Stock rom at current time.
Clock tampering worked for me
It worked for me , but it wasn't instant....i did clear the cache, but i also got impatient and the set the clock 10 days foward...also shut phone off and charged it after settincg clock back the first time it worked.
I did do it multiple times as i soft bricked my device because of the rrm crap and had to flash stock firmware...
Supposedly there is a stockfirmware that skips this oem crap...i believe its Australia version....
But the og method does work just be patient
Maybe a stupid question but which steps exactly need to be repeated?
First step I understand as flashing stock firmware and setting up phone without setting WiFi or mobile data (which are required to check updates).
I'm repeating steps from 'Go to date and set it back 7 days ago' one. Actually, setting date back 7 days for the 2nd time means I need to go back 14 days back in total? Or it's the case when date is being reverted automatically?
Thanks in advance, I'm fighting this issue since few weeks and can't get it working :/
E: Does "restart you device again" mean normal restart or recovery + clear cache?
E2: Not sure at which point it worked but even without OEM Unlock option (I already unlocked it long time ago) I was able to flash TWRP Thanks mate!

Bro i cannot believe it, lol it worked i followed exact step from this post. oem unlock was still missing so what i did was turned off the developer mode wait 2-3 sec. to it disappear then go to software info tap 7 times on build number then back to developer mode to see if its there so then mine showed up lol... btw my model number is sm-g955F is on security patch December 1 2018
works with PIE as well
this worked for my G955f with PIE (security patch lvl feb. 1st, 2019) as well - thanks a lot!
--> the device needs to be connected to the internet though. <--
Just confirming this still works
Made an account just to express my gratitude and joy, as after following the steps and with a little toying around, The OEM Unlock appeared!
Do not get discouraged, keep trying and toying with your time/update settings!
I wish anyone who is embarking on this journey the best of luck!
Just a heads-up to those who just want to flash official Samsung firmware via Odin - you don't need to OEM-unlock to flash official firmware with Odin - I just did exactly that on a newly factory-reset S8 with the option not showing and Download Mode saying "OEM Lock: On" - it installed just fine.

Cannot disable system updates on Pixel

Cannot disable system updates on Pixel. Changed settings but still OS updates are running.
Developer options > on > automatic system updates > off
You really like to have many vulnerabilities and old software on your phone do not you?
Leave it alone. Nowadays so many vulnerabilities are found each day it's crazy to not being able to protect yourself from them.
The option on stock Android 10 is only to "not apply updates at next reboot" You would have to stop update services. Root will be required. File manager to edit files. I have no idea how involved that would be, but then if a rollback to older version is your preference. Factory Images flashing, then stopping required services.
I would even consider to downgrade to ver. 9. After installation of ver. 10 the phone freezes often .

With my Pixel happened the opposite. After this patch , about a week, the freezings stopped. Believe or not, the battery stopped draining quickly and came back to normal discharge.

auto rotate stopped working after downgrading android 10 back to Pie

after downgrading back to android pie from one ui 2.0 android 10, my phone will not rotate in any apps, i have tried all the steps to correct this, clear cache, factory reset, install another firmware(older version)also when testing the acceleromator in settings using *#0*# , its not even detected, I cannot safely get back to android 9 without my phone working 100% and android 10 is missing alot of things I liked from 9, mostly the goodlock apps, can anyone suggest or help in any way, I have the unlocked version of the note 10 snapdragon USA, thanks
Years ago I had a Note that I fubar'd by flashing something I wasn't supposed to, and the GPS never worked right again. Your accelerometer *shouldn't* have been affected by reverting to Android 9, but if something is gonna go bad, it will happen when manually flashing firmware. Download the factory Android 9 image again, confirm MD5 hash and reflash it. If the accelerometer works, you're golden. If it doesn't, then you have three options:
1. Flash Android 10 and hope the accelerometer works. If it does, then leave it alone and learn to live with Android 10
2. Send it to Samsung for a warranty claim
3. Keep it and live with a broken accelerometer
Good luck!
