I had been doing a great deal of tinkering trying to get my phone's battery life back in the last few days, and I made good progress, but I severely jacked up something related to the microphone/speaker/video recording.
PROBLEM:
The problem, as far as I can tell, is that every app that tries to access the microphone can't do it--this shows up when I try to use Google voice input in various text fields with a little "Can't reach Google at the moment." Same with trying to do a search by voice in Google Now--brief brief flash of the microphone red, then back to gray, with "Can't reach Google at the moment". Additionally, my Touchless Input cannot be enabled--the box has automatically unchecked itself, and pressing it makes the button get a little gray, registering the action, but no checkmark will appear.
Additionally, other apps which would use the mic don't seem to have that functionality--Evernote, for example, would crash if I attempted to record an audio clip. This was before I performed a factory data reset last night--and the problem has persisted regardless.
There are two other, seemingly related, issues. First is the inability of the phone to capture videos. The camera opens fine, and I can take fine stills with it, but pushing the video recording button makes the red "record" flash for a moment before a "Not able to record media" message pops up, and the camera returns to the still photo mode.
Second is the inability to play videos. I have tried playing videos in as many formats as I could try, from within several players, including the stock "Photos", "Gallery", and "YouTube" apps. "Sorry, cannot play video" pops up, or the app simply crashes. Similar story for attempting to play music through the stock "Google Play Music" app. And it gets worse. I can't make or receive calls. Actually, let me revise that. I can't hear anything being said on the calls, over the speaker, or through headphones (though I've yet to try BlueTooth). The call appears to connect, but I can't hear anything from them, and they can't hear anything from me.
So--that's the basic summary of the problem--threefold.
1. No audio input through mic
2. No audio output through speakers--my phone doesn't ring when I get a call, although it will vibrate and the options to take the call appear as they normally would.
3. No audio/video playback whatsoever for other media.
I'm running Android 4.4 on a Droid Mini, unrooted, and I just completed a factory reset last night.
ANALYSIS:
Here's the wrinkle. I know this isn't a hardware problem, because I have found a surefire fix that makes all of this work properly if I absolutely need it, it just sucks. Rebooting into safe mode is what does it. Playback resumes as it did before I had the problem. I can play videos, pump music, and Touchless Input works flawlessly--although interestingly, it has me re-enter the catchphrase three times every time I get into safemode, like setting up from scratch.
My consternation comes from the fact that, to my very limited knowledge, all that safe mode is doing keeping any user-added apps from running. Which is all well and good, but I just did a factory reset. Literally when I boot the phone no user installed apps are running, and yet there's a definite difference when I boot into safe mode, cuz everything works there.
So, safe mode must do something more than just disable user-installed apps--and I need to know what that is if I'm going to fix this thing. I have added 4 apps since then-- App Ops, GSAM Battery Monitor, BetterBatteryStats, and Button Savior (Non-root), all of which I know from experience to be very "well-behaved" apps.
Anyone know what safe mode is doing besides disabling user apps? Along those lines, does it revert updated stock apps to their factory state? I ask because very, very briefly, while my phone was slowly trying to upgrade the 40-odd pieces of Bloatware from the Play Store, the microphone was working. Which makes me think that the culprit is one of the system apps in it's updated form. If safe mode runs these apps as they originally appeared on the phone, that might explain it. It would also hopefully let me painstakingly disable these apps, one by one, to find the culprit and disable it.
I say culprit because of something I stumbled across trying to research this--weirdly enough, in a message from the devs of Shazam. devs of Shazam They say that the issue has shown up on 4.4 and the cause appears to be one app somehow monopolizing access to the microphone. I could see this breaking the video as well, and potentially the audio playback if, as I assume, Google uses the mic to help tweak the sound of the speakers.
Anyone know any more about any of the aspects of this? I will be posting back myself as I learn more.
What happens if you factory reset without restoring any apps? In other words, factory reset, choose not to restore your apps (or don't attach to a Google account on initial setup, and do it post-setup). In other words, do you have an app that is blocking this access?

Update: Tried this. Did another FDR, signed in to one of my Google accounts afterwards, but haven't updated a thing. The audio/voice/video/bugs seem gone; however, the ****ty battery drain I had before is back. I'm playing around with some settings to find out what can be done. I'm also going down the list and updating the system apps one by one.
Does anyone know a good testing process (ie, should I run the app? do I need to restart after install? run the app and close? etc) that will keep me from getting false negatives (ie thinking an app isn't causing the problem when it is)?
Update again: I'm working down in alphabetical order through the factory apps. However, after the most recent factory reset, it appears that my battery drain is back, and as long as the battery drain is there, the phone works normally. So, not looking good in terms of battery+functionality for me. Went through the 40ish apps that were on the phone stock--after the fresh reset, the phone is working, but the battery life is shot to **** all over again. Not sure what to make of all this, and now back to being frustrated with a 4 hour battery life from the phone that never sleeps. UGH
Update yet once more:
For kicks and giggles, tried unchecking the "Touchless Control" in settings, to see what effect that would have on my battery. But, reasoning that whatever wakelock was keeping my phone up all the time had to be persisting after it was needed, I guessed I needed to reboot to get rid of them. Booting up again, I'm back to battery life without audio/video/etc. Very confused here. Apparently it has nothing to do with the apps installed, period.

alright, so i bought the nexus 5 month or so ago.
the issue i'm having:
i go in maps. say i'm rather close over berlin. i enter "Munich" in the seach bar. the "flyover" starts. however it doesnt finish over munich, it stops halfway through.
on my device its reproducable. no matter what destination i enter, the flyover just stops somewhere around halfway through, always at the very same spot. it i then go back to the search bar and tap on the "go" button again, the flyover continues, but still doesnt end. it takes me 3 times tapping on the "go"/"search" button until munich is visible. however it is still not centered. even after 5 further clicks its still not completely zoomed in.
this really bugs me. i dont use maps very often, but when i do i have to see this crap.
not quite sure if related, but i'm playing family guy lately. whenever you order a character to do something, the camera usually locks on the character while he walks to wherever he has to go. on my device, the camera just stops following him after a few seconds. seems the same/similar issue than whats going on in maps.
any idea what it could be? i really dont want to root and install a custom rom on the nexus 5 until google supports it.
i already cleared the cache, cleared the data and uninstalled all updates. in every version in every configuration this bug persists.

First step I would try is rebooting your phone into Safe mode. If the problem persists then you can eliminate 3rd party apps from the equation. If it's fixed then you can assume one of your apps is causing the issue.

Have you tried different Locations settings? Does the same thing happen during High Performance, Battery Saver, and Device Only?
Only other thing I can think to try is resetting the phone to factory default.

i have all locations settings turned off. but tried it with them turned on, still the same.
i suppose a factory reset is whats left to do... :/

Been forever since I've made a post to XDA, but I have a problem I'm not able to solve without taking an inconvenient plunge. I should mention that my phone was 100% fine yesterday evening, but since I was asleep last night it seems to have run out of battery, so this morning I charged it a bit, then I turned it on to a world of problems.
Ok, so let me run through a list of just a handful of the problems I'm having right now...
Totally stock (not rooted) Nexus 5 running Android 6.0.1 (Security: 1 March 2016)
1. Home and App switch soft keys don't work
2. Notifcations are not working at all
3. Notification shade wont pull down
4. Widgets cannot, and will not load
5. Cannot get into Developer options "Developer options are not available for this user"
Seems I'm not the only one to experience the strange bug, some folks over at Android Central were experiencing the exact same thing toward the end of last year.

Some people to have resolved this issue using "adb shell am start -n com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity" but I cannot get into Developer options to turn on USB Debugging (unless I don't need to?)
What I've tried already...
1. Cleared all Google App data "CLEAR ALL DATA"
2. Tried to make another user, just flashes and goes back to "Opula" my main and broken user profile, never creates the other profile, same thing happens when I press on Guest too
3. Safe mode, but the problem persists there too
4. Virus scan, turned up a whole lot of nothing
I'm now at the point where I'm thinking I'm going to have to do a Factory data reset (the "inconvenient plunge"), even though I think I've backed everything up the "Touch to sync" option on my Account > Google doesn't do anything, neither does the "Sync now" from the drop down menu. So despite having explored my Google account on my desktop I cannot see if it has backed up my Apps and App data, but it seems to have backed up my contacts and such.
I'm going to get a third party app to back up as stuff as I possibly can as well, but even Helium is useless now since I cannot get into the Developer options so enable USB debugging.
Anyone got any experience with this issue or how to resolve it?

Just wanted to update this thread to say that I did a factory reset and the phone is now fixed, but I wouldn't to give a more comprehensive account of the problems I was experiencing with the phone until I did the factory reset.
List of problems
Home and app-switch soft keys not working (back key is working)
Google Now 'on tap' not appearing (cause of home key)
Cannot see notifications just says "No notifications" (but the light and sound work fine when a notification is received)
Cannot pull down notification shade to toggle controls
Widgets cannot be added and will not load
Cannot pull down the immersive mode overlay
Google Backup not working (after 8+ days)
All types of syncing not working
Phone's storage doesn't appear on PC when plugged in via USB
Cannot access developer options (due to active profile level)
Cannot create or switch users
The best advice I can give to mitigate such an unusual problem (that appeared totally out of the blue on a cold boot) is use Google Backup services, keep on top of syncing, and manage your data via your Google account! Or as an alternative, manage and maintain manual backups.
I have an HTC 10. I have heard so many horror stories on significant battery drain issue after the Oreo update so I have not updated to Oreo yet. I have read somewhere the issue has been resolved on Android's end but there is no more update on the HTC end to incorporate this update for the HTC 10. So every time the Oreo system update prompt came up I did not allow to update to proceed. I had it set to update only on WIFI and always ask me prior.
This morning I must have accidentally hit OK when the prompt came up while I was scrolling the screen for something else and it started to update. I immediately turned off WIFI but it continued the download with my mobile data. So I turned off mobile data as well on my phone. Right now I am at:
Software Update: 3.16.617.2 (1.32GB) Download is paused because your data connection was lost.
Shows a status bar at 3%.
I cannot find a way to cancel or stop this download and subsequent update. Is there a way?
I tried long press on the download screen, the Updater only has options of: Block all, Show silently, On the lock screen, Override do not disturb, all having to do with notification presentations but nothing to cancel the download altogether.
I went into Settings > Apps and popped up Device Configuration and did a FORCE STOP. that didn't do anything. There is an option there to UNINSTALL UPDATES but I didn't touch it since the update hasn't started yet and not sure if this app even deal with system updates.
Just tried a Wipe Cache Partition and rebooted. The system download is still being queued. There is no way to stop this?
I am surprise it will continue to download this huge file even with WIFI off. I had it set to not download any updates unless WIFI, but I guess now I understand it means this is only checked when download started, once it started it will download on my cellular network if WIFI goes out of range? This is a poor design.
Now if I let it download, is there a way to stop the update once the download is completed?

Install Later
I selected Install Later and it gave me a choice of being reminded again in:
30 minutes
1 hour
2 hours
4 hours

So now I have two questions:
(1) Is there a way to disable this reminder prompt?
(2) Where is this downloaded file? Can I find it with a file manager and delete it? and if it is deleted will it trigger an auto download again or will it go back to just prompting me to download once in a while like before?

There may or may not be a method to disable the update notification but it will require root. You'll probably have to figure out how to disable the notification for yourself.
Try doing a Google search for:
"Disable update notification (your model number)"
Or
"Disable update notification on android"

I was out and about, and was in a middle of texting someone, and for a split second while I typed, the system update screen popped up. Since I was in the middle of typing, it took my typing as a confirmation to "Install Now" and began the update. Never mind I only had 31% of battery left at that time and never mind I was not even home and needed the phone. I just can't imagine Google never even bothered with a "Are you sure you want to update now?" prompt. Incredible.
So after it finished the update, a good 30 minutes later, it rebooted, then did more updates, rebooted, and eventually, it started up again, and a lock screen pattern dialog popped up. I put in my pattern and it says it is not recognized. I am certain the pattern is the one I set. Yet something caused the correct pattern to not be recognized. So now I no longer can access my phone. It says I have 28 more tries before it deletes all phone data.
So now I am totally crippled without a chance to even back up all my data.
Anyone know of a way to bypass the lock screen pattern?

If you want to keep all of your data intact, root the device, then try this:

Or, you can factory reset via recovery, it will wipe all of your data though.

I have found myself in almost the same situation as the OP.
Like the OP, I don't want to upgrade to Oreo, but somehow did something that my phone interpreted as asking it to start downloading the update. Since my system update is set to download only on WiFi, turning off WiFi stopped the download at 0% done.
*Unlike* the OP, my phone is still in the state of having not yet downloaded the update, so I'm still (for now) securely on Nougat. But my notification bar icon now shows the animated download arrow, and the notification shade shows my system update as "Queued". I'm guessing that this is causing extra battery drain, and it's also really annoying.
I've tried a web search on cancelling a scheduled Android update, and found some interesting information suggesting that I stop the DMClient app. But this wasn't specific to either my phone or to a 7-8 upgrade, and I couldn't find an app by that name installed on my phone. I think I found something else recommending that I stop the Google Play services app and clear its cache. I *do* see that app, but I don't feel like experimenting with random web advice, and so thought I'd check here.
Here are two questions:
1) Is there anything I can do to stop my phone from trying to download and install the Oreo update?
2) If I do a factory reset, which Android would I be on after the reset?

Flash the marshmallow firmware for your device via PC using your devices specific flashtool. It will remove everything and put you back to what you had before triggering the update.

I actually figured out a way to stop the phone trying to download the update, which I'll describe below, but first I have two questions about the solution you offered: Is there a reason you said to flash Marshmallow firmwaer rather than Nougat, since the update I'm trying to avoid is the one to Oreo? And, if I did that, how would I get back to Nougat?
But I said that I figured out a solution, and I hope that it may help if someone else finds themselves in my situation. Here is what I did:
1) I determined that the app trying to perform the update on my HTC 10 is a system app called "Updater"
I found this by long-clicking on the notification shade item about the update, and selecting more information. The phone displayed notification options for the Updater app.
2) I cleared cache and data for the Updater app
I went to Updater's app info page via via Settings >> Apps >> All apps. Updater is a system app, so I had to use the kebab menu in the upper right corner of the All apps screen to tell the phone to display system apps. Once there, I went to the "Storage" screen and cleared cache and data.
3) I restarted the phone, and "cleaned up" after what I had done
When my phone powered back on after the restart, there was *nothing* at all related to a system update in the notification bar. I turned on cellular data (but left WiFi off), and went to Settings >> About >> Software Updates. The phone checked for a few seconds, during which I could see (behind the "checking" popup) that the box for downloading only over WiFi was clear. This made sense, since this setting must be an option for the app I had just wiped. After maybe 15 seconds, the phone displayed a screen offering me the 3.16.617.2 system update. I used the back button to close that window, which left me on the screen where I could re-check the option to download system updates only over WiFi. Naturally, I re-checked this option.
That's it. My phone is now once again displaying a notification bar icon offering me the Oreo update, but it no longer thinks I told it to proceed with this update. I have been on WiFi a couple of times since doing this, and the phone has not tried to start the download.
I'm guessing that I could get this notification bar icon to go away by hiding notifications for the Updater app, but have not yet done so.

I have a non-T-Mobile Oneplus 7 Pro running on AT&T. 8GB RAM, 256 storage.
I've done a plain upgrade, had these problems, and still seen them after a full wipe and reinstall from backup and after a will wipe followed by manually reinstalling apps:
1) UI sounds inexplicably stop playing even though volume is still turned up. Sounds come back and play normally if I restart.
2) Dark theme partially goes away, switches back to light.
3) Zedge completely disappeared from Play store. Only way I was able to get it back was to side-load.
4) (this goes along with #1) Some app notification sounds mysteriously stop playing even though they are still designated, they act as if there's no volume.
5) (not sure if this is a bug or expected behavior) App notifications play through Android Auto - prior to the upgrade the sound would lower momentarily but I never heard notification sounds.
6) Android Auto not showing in app tray but works when plugged into vehicle - go figure?
Anyone else seeing these issues?
