AcDisplay vs AmbientDisplay and strange battery life results. - OnePlus 8 Questions & Answers

I was a Motorola user for quite some time. My moto x force battery was fading so i went on with oneplus 8 12/256.
Moto Display is for me a must have so i tried to search a similar app on the web.
I turned off AmbientDisplay and tried the AcDisplay + WaveUp app. It really works as advertised (with some minor bugs).
But one thing that i was really suprised with is the battery life. How can it be that AmbientDisplay is less energy efficient compared with these two apps combined?
No hard feelings, but it looks like oneplus has done poor job in developing this part of their OS. Version is 11.0.4.4 Stable.
Note: I was using AmbientDisplay wake on single tap and not like always on display ...

Short Overview

Just wanted to give an overview of the HTC One M8 WP Edition to those who were wondering what it's like..
Performance wise, the WP 8.1 is actually a really smooth OS that I've never ran into any problems with so far. The only bad side to the platform is not being able to download the same variety of apps you can on an android phone (hopefully can be ported soon).
The best part of the phone, in my opinion, is the speakers. They are not only loud, but also surprisingly clear and crisp. A lot of my friends always ask me if I'm using a Bluetooth speaker, when it's really just my phone playing music.
The screen is amazing. The viewing angles are great, and everything is just perfect. There is one issue with the auto brightness where it wouldn't lower to the lowest brightness in a pure dark condition and wouldn't raise all the way in the sun. This isn't just my device as one of my friends also experienced this. Hopefully this is a software issue that can be fixed.
Overall, the phone performs just was well as the regular Android or HTC Sense editions (same hardware). The browser could use a little bit of work because it's relatively slow, but that's why 3rd part apps exist.
If you guys have any questions about the phone, I'll be happy to try to answer them below. Thanks!

Battery life is actually really good.
I wake up around 7AM, attend class, and go to sleep around 11. By then, there is still about 30 percent of battery left.
I use it pretty heavily too (youtube, browsing, gaming).
On weekends I don't have to charge it until Sunday.
EDIT: I forgot to mention I usually use the medium brightness setting.
Any way to show sot with wp?

can you provide some comparison for some one thinking about switching from android -> windows?
like my android - and use lots of "pc related" functions... vpn, remote desktop, office documents. all my phones are rooted for access to wifi tether.
switching to windows would give me a bonus of internet explorer (required for a work application) that i don't have using android (i use remote desktop app to get to a windows pc to use IE on it).

Any S6 user happy with their phone?

Hi guys, I'm going straight to the point: are you happy with your phone (in general, I know every phone has some minor annoyances)? I keep reading on the internet people that keep on lamenting about it (bad battery, laggy, awful RAM management, ect.), that's why I've opened this thread. I don't have the phone and I plan on buying it (it or the s6 edge or edge+, still have to decide - unfortunately the note 5 isn't coming to Europe anytime soon -), but all the reports are making me scared of buying it.
I'm happy with it. But you enjoy it more with root. Custom kernel fixes the ram issue, keeps the system speedy, custom roms add more features and debtor for better performance and ram management. So I'm basically enjoying it because of root
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Like osmosizzz above I can say that I am very happy with this phone. Once you root it and remove the bloatware this thing flies. Using a custom ROM and kernel I have better battery life, endless customization options and a speedy UI experience.
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
I'd like not to have to root, I'm just tired of it (coming from a nexus 4), but I guess I might consider it if I buy the S6
You really dont have to have root as the phone is still plenty fast and with each update that comes out they are improving the software of the phone.
It's the best phone I ever had, my only gripes are aggressive memory management and the placement of the speaker (I usually end up covering it when holding it ), lag and battery are a lot better since the 2nd 511 update, the first update from 501 was rather laggy
I have 2 of this phone. here are my opinions:
1st phone (rooted and on XstrestoLite ROM)
I have great battery life, responses and everything seems fine except for the current bug with BOGG firmwares, which resulted in the keyboard lag when coming for lockscreen (Keyboard open delay about 3-6 seconds) check out my battery life here and here
2nd phone (stock and not rooted ever)
I find that the battery life on this phone not as great as my 1st phone, but however, everything is pretty smooth and great to me. But for a short time i had problems with GPS not being able to lock properly on Waze and Google Maps, however, not sure what happened (i didn't update the phone or anything) but it was back to normal again. and never happened again ever since.
Verdict: i love both my phones, i'll have them only until the Samsung Galaxy S7 comes out.
I owned this phone for over 4 months now. It never lag and blazing fast, the fastest android phone I've ever seen and the most amazing design I've ever seen too. It is just how the poor memory management kills apps at the background when you doing heavy multi-tasking, I've heard the 2nd 5.1.1 OTA fixed it. If multi-tasking is your concern, you should consider S6 Edge Plus comes with 4GB ram.
The battery performance is above average, imagine when you got this ultra smooth speed plus 2K screen and with only a 2550mAh capacity, I'll say it has done the job pretty well on battery life and enough to use a full day for any light to medium usage user. Heavy user will need a 2nd charge but it supports QC2.0(just get a QC2.0 powerbank) or wireless charging.
https://shopmeenova.appspot.com/st/p/mrg2.html
External storage can be overcome easily with this cute staff.
Since I'm a one-hand lover and the S6 size is the max. acceptable limit to me. I'm thinking to swap to Sony Z5 Compact later but that's s810 cpu overheating issue scared me away, I may just stick with S6 until S8 out, still not decided yet atm.
Its pretty good, but the RAM management and the occasional battery freakout (background drain) are irritating. If 5.1.1 fixes these 2 issues, I'm gold.
Before anyone tells me I can custom, its a work phone, I need full stock unrooted/knox intact otherwise I can't hook into my work's MDM systems (yes, its really nazi security).
But even without root, debloating via package disabler pro/debloater makes a noticeable difference to battery, which is a poor indictment of Samsung (6th generation Galaxy and still not learnt their lesson?).
The camera is out of this world and you get REALLY used to having a reliable fingerprint reader, I just rest my thumb stupidly on the home button on other people's phones (and if there isn't a physical home button I just stare stupidly at the screen for ~2 seconds lol).
I've never actually used the 'swap battery' feature so don't miss it, work phone so I got the storage bumped but if I paid for it myself I'd probably be irritated at the cost
One happy user here.
Battery life, my only gripe. Otherwise a perfect phone for me. Won't be rooting, just changed the launcher (Nova prime) and Skinomi case. Happy S6 user here!
apart from the camera I don't like any thing about this phone.
Best phone i,ve ever had, fantastic camera/screen/battery lasts me a full day no problems at all
Unhappy user here; bad battery life, laggy software, agressive memory resulting to bad multi tasking; will definitely change the phone.

I'm quite pleased with it, and I didn't even root mine. I'm especially impressed with the GearVR.
Count me with the happy owners!
I will root soon anyway to get more flexibility and customization.
Since updating to the EVR firmware (for network specific settings) I love it, super fast and great performance even with intensive games. My one issue is battery life; although it lasts the day with ordinary use it does drain after a while of continuous use, but then again with fast charging I just plug it in for a few minutes and all is good.

Only thing I dislike about this phone is the battery, but as other have said. Root->custom rom + kernel (and MAYBE soon Xposed) and this phone is at least average in battery life.
If you don't root (and is a power user, the phone is not for you). With root + custom rom + few tweaks I can go around 3-6 hours SOT on data (depending on brightness) and 6+ on wifi. Without I barely hit 3.
Phones like the Xperia Z3 compact can hit 6 hours SOT without root. So yeah, if rooting this phone is great, if not it sucks from a power user perspective.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the OnePlus 2, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the OnePlus 2 is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
well made phone, doesn't feel flimsy. SD810 doesn't seem to have the heat issues, screen could be a little better outside, battery life is great, the notification slider on the side is brilliant idea. Oxygen OS by itself sucks but with Xposed and several modules made the phone tons better.
Nice nice phone. I don't regret it!
Battery
Battery standby is extreme long. Tested it: in 12hours lost 3%. (Wi-Fi and Mobile Network was permamently active in my test)
But the active display standby is ~~~ lame.
Its got bit warm than my one+1 but it's ok.
Chasis/Design
The Chasis of phone is real AlMg. You can brake someones nose with that (not tested! )
It feels good in my hands, a bit heavier than one+1
Buyed with Kevlar StyleSwap Cover. Too bad, it's not fitting perfectly but it sit.
Sound
Speakers are louder than my laptop speakers. Clear Sound, no scratches heared.
Speed test and stability
Fast app start, smooth scrolling, switches fast between the apps.
Antutu Benchmark test:
Test run fine with over 55fps average.
With fully installed apps, games, tools etc..
Benchmark result: >58000
Camera/Video
Photo quality is very good. Takes pictures faster as one+1 and in good quality. nothing to say negative about it.
Videos are in good quality too. You can take slow-motion videos too (720p with 120fps)
SD Card
It's a bit faster as in one+1!
~3451MB (28183 files) Recovery backup done in 74 sec.
64MB/s Read/Write speed.
For a phone with 64GB internal memory it's enough speed.
Well. That's all importand tests i have done. If i have missed something, write it down here. i try to answer.
EDIT:
Very easy to unlock bootloader. Same way as in one+1.
Done it in under 5 minutes
On my old phone it was a real ass-disaster... (Xperia S) Never ever again
There are minor software glitches. But I expect everything to be fine in coming months. More than decent performance
love...mostly
i like the oneplus 2 overall, but not yet real excited about oxygen and updates only about once a month since purchase.
the type c connector seems to be usb type 2. OP apparently neglected to make accessory cables (power & otg) for the type c connection on 1+2, except power cable that comes w/phone. this, as of dec., 2015.
For otg: apparently you must go backwards to their usb type 2 otg (made for 1+1) and use their adapter from micro usb to type c connector.
tried a 3rd party otg type c that is usb 3.1: incompatable. perhaps update will fix this (i hope, since i
want to be able to use a flash drive w/phone since it has no micro sd slot). snc
I can try many roms

Awesome phone
overall. i m very dissapointed with this phone. Beautiful hardware with strong internals, the oos just make this phone extremely slow
Really love the phone since i installed CM 13
That runs really smooth and fast + great batterylife
I don't know if my OPT is defective, the speaker volume is very low. youtube videos or music is "ok" but especially ringtones are very low, I can't hear them outside of my house. At work in my pants it's impossible to hear and feel the phone because the vibration isn't strong enough. If Frenk_Ryder writes that the speaker is louder then the notebook speakers it's hard to believe for me. really?
and the battery life is horrible on my device. plugged it off the charger on 6 am and have only 20 percent on 12 pm with 2 - 3 hours SOT. I'm using the unofficial mahdi builds of cm13. the performance is good but Android System seems to be a battery hogger. I don't know why or what's the problem.
oxygen OS lacks much features of Cyanogen OS or Cyanogenmod and is "not complete at all", and Android System always is on top of the battery stats list. what is the issue for that? I mean Oxygen OS 2.2.0, older versions may be better in terms of battery life?
I hope anyone can help me with my device. thx
Was contemplating going with the Galaxy S6, but the Notification Slider was a real deal-maker for me (especially being loyal to the Galaxy lineup since S1).
Now owning the 1+2, I noticed I can not discreetly silent my phone in my pocket without taking it out and drawing attention in a meeting).
Have any of you found the Notification Slider to be a lot more useful than you originally thought it to be?

When does the issue appear about the volume speaker ?
For the battery life, try another rom ( CM13, Skydragon, H2O, .. )

tried almost all the roms, some have something or the other missing, others have serious battery drain some have wifi issues, others camera is bull****. I miss my z2 so much and i will sell my op2 and get a nexus 7 or whatever its called, when its released
awesome, just needs a bit of software polish...
Near flawless
I have had many phones, mostly Samsungs and LGs. Let me tell you this Oneplus 2 is the perfect phone. WIth the latest OOS 3.0.1 MM, Xposed with Gravitybox, and nova launcher on top, it's a brilliant setup. This thing gets higher scores than the Nexus 6p on every benchmark i've tested, I can game for at least 33 minutes straight of Nova3 (that's the longest straight time I've played any game so far) and no overheating and NO lagging or slowdowns. I don't understand the controversy over overheating and throttling, perhaps the latest models being manufactured are the best models. Overall, I love this phone, also, battery life is incredibly for me. I go two days without one charge and that's using texting about 500 sms a day and web browsing, light youtube, and light music, ON wifi. I've never had a phone quite like it, and for 350 bucks! Awesome.:good::good::good:
Coming from a clapped out Nexus 4, I wanted to really like my One Plus 2 (Oxygen OS 2.2.1) but it was hard; a perfectly adequate phone, but not overwhelming.
The Marshmallow upgrade to Oxygen 3.0.2 has made it the phone it should always have been. It's faster, the fingerprint unlock is better and instantaneous (and no need to wake the device first), the occasional stutters have stopped, the battery lasts longer on standby.
The two standout features for me, however, are not software. Firstly, the alert slider is brilliant. Secondly, there are plenty of cheap Dual SIM phones but few decent ones (in the UK at least).
I only got access to the true potential of the sd810 after switching to a custom rom & kernel
Its Great phone overall.
I guess the sales could be much larger quantities if there were not invites.

I have developed a great degree of love for this phone, especially since it got a wealth of custom ROMs. It performs well, the battery life is excellent, it doesn't prevent me from installing custom ROMs or rooting, and all-in-all I love it. It handles everything I throw at it like a champ, and doesn't complain, and all for less than $300
its a good phone, but i had few hard times because of lack software updates from manufacturer (no android 7.0, no android 7.1, nothing) like on every other non-google phone, but thats life i finally fixed all major issues and it simply works, so i like it again

Major defect of Moto Z is too small battery? Nope!!

I think I haven't seen a single review of Moto Z that isn't reporting the "too small 2600mAh" as the major "defect" of the phone...
Reading numbers and having an LG G2 that with it's 3000mAh battery was reported as one of the best "top of range" (of its years... obviously...) that with my over 400 apps installed barely reached 3.5h of SOT (Screen On Time, with no gaming, only Internet and apps...) and considering that Moto Z has on board a 2K screen which are known to be more energy hungry than full HD (as seen e.g. LG G2 vs. LG G3...) I was a bit worried too, so I decided to go with Incipio from day 1, having it ready when needed...
Well... it seems that the result is: Motorola 1 - Reviewers 0...
It's over a week I'm using and testing my Moto Z with same number of apps, usage and settings I had on G2... look at the results attached!
I've measured them with two of the best software available: Accubattery Pro & 3C Battery Pro, both available on Play Store (and I can confirm their readings with my direct impressions).
These are the results (min/max values as measured by the two apps...)
- SOT: 5h 32m - 6h 26m range
- Standby/screen off: 30h - 67h range
- Mixed/normal usage: 17h 18m - 19h 39m
These values are waaaay better than what I had on my G2 with similar setup/apps/usage (and it had 3000mAh battery...!), and surely suitable to cover a full day of usage... (mixed surely will increase when I'll stop to continuously look/tweak/modify my phone! :laugh.
Ok, I'm quite good on optimizing my phones to avoid wakelocks, unuseful starting & background apps (& so on...), but I think that this is a demostration of the *great* work done by Motorola boys on this phone...
As final considerations let me add that on screen off the battery usage is really LOW and on screen on, of the about 17-18%/h of battery usage, about 14-15%/h is from screen consumption (much higher than G2's IPS that can easily stay even under 10%/h if dimmed a bit), so if you are searching for even better battery time, limit display luminosity as much as possible and eventually try "pixels off" apps (not yet tested by me... only some blue screen filter when I'm on bed...) that could work fine on our Amoled display...
With Incipio battery installed you can consider about 2-3h more of SOT (depending if used to trickle charging main @80% or to recharge it from lower values, which seems less efficient to me...) and TONS of standby/screen off more hours... :fingers-crossed:

It could... BUT I've asked for the opposite reason: to reduce most of drains (especially with hundred of apps installed like in my case...) root is *mandatory*...

Many. And with a combined "settings cocktail" I tuned up in years of experiment on my old G2... :cyclops:
Most important are:
- CPU Master Pro (or equivalents, like e.g. Fauxclock, to set frequencies, governor, etc...)
- Greenify Pro with Xposed extensions (to hybernate some apps during screen off)
- Leandroid Pro (to limit 3G/4G/WiFi/GPS/Bluetooth drains)
Optional/useful are:
- ES System Monitor (to limit apps startup on conditions)
- Amplify (Xposed module to reduce wakelocks)
- Wakelock detector (to... Guess! )
- Accubattery Pro and/or 3C Battery Monitor Pro to monitor battery usage by system, apps, screen & so on...
- Eyefilter and Monochrome to reduce screen consumption on dark places or (very) low battery conditions...
These are all quite technical apps with hundred of settings that require a good knowledge of Android system and apps to be properly set.
So, my hint is to start with one and set it properly then, eventually, decide to go with the next one...
Better is to start with monitor apps (battery, wakelocks...) and then, decide where to go with tune up, based on reported (by these apps) results...

no, I dont want to root it yet because is a great phone, I have the unlocked 03 version, double sim and 64gb; but I installed wakelock detector and thses are the process always on top
1. Google play services with thousands of wakelocks, always on top " net_scheduler" and " wake:com.google.android.gms"
2. Phone services with "gsmconnection"
Any advice to stop those annoying wakelocks. I will root it if I have too.
Thank you so much

Julio, this not a full-of-features-out-of-the-box-crap like an S7..
This is a Moto Z! You should root it BECAUSE it is a great phone!
Seriuously, getting the better of Moto Z requires root... and a solution for your problem (probably...) too.
I had to Greenify Play Services on my old LG G2 (for your same reason) and even if I started without doing it on Moto Z, I ended to Greenify them on Z too...
They are a (needed but) invasive & not so optimized set of services that often eat a lot of battery on... random!
Sometimes after one update they begin, then after another they stop and so on...
A good start (before root) could be installing a battery monitor like 3C and then post here some screenshots taken at end of a day (battery low...) taken from battery usage on settings, from 3C and from WLD... then we will see what to do about them.
Anyway the couple Greenify Pro in at least Root mode and Amplify Pro (requires root too...) are surely capable of solve it in any way...

I have been wondering how can you people achieve 6 hours of SOT where as I am hardly getting around 3.5 hours after mixed use. Also I am worrying about what is Android system which stands second in my battery usage.
Yeah the battery on the Moto Z is actually pretty good in my experience. Back on MM, I would regularly get over 7 hours SOT. On nougat thats dropped to 5.5-6 hours, but still better than my old nexus 6.
This is the worst battery in any phone I've ever had. I can't even get thru a day at work without it almost dying. I listen to some music thru Bluetooth speaker in my crane and it chops the battery in half in just and hour of listening. I do regret buying this phone but I gave my mate 9 to my step daughter. I will be buying a new phone soon and will never buy another Motorola phone.

Without root you can only work with (half) Greenify and with screen luminosity (it has a great impact on SOT...) I think...
Obviously, removing "bad" apps like Facebook or Messenger is mandatory... change them with Lite FB (that is *not* FB Lite... )

Yup true in terms of battery it's the worst phone to ever have!! Have to charge it twice a day and barely ever got above 3 hour of SOT! But what can you expect from a 2600mah battery for a qhd screen. If you want this phone then you have to buy the battery mod in order to avoid charging twice a day otherwise it's a waste if your buying this phone and expecting it to last you a day..

What about rooted phones? What can we do with root and or xposed?
enetec said:

I Think it is quite well explained from in the post #7 from enetec. Not exactly on how to do it but some apps to get started with and do some more investigations around.
Check out the support thread for Moto Z issues found after Android update 7.1.1:

All Browsers destroy my battery

I am currently on stock Android 12. I flashed the unlocked stock image (non-verizon) a few weeks back. With Android 11, Android 12, LineageOS, etc. every browser I have tried including Chrome, Brave, Via, etc. all drain the battery way faster than browsers did on my previous Moto G5 plus. i would say when I am surfing the net on my browser (usually just reading forums, no video), the battery drains about 1% every 5 minutes or less. I have tried 2.4Ghz wifi, LTE, etc. and data connection type doesn't seem to impact anything.
Is this normal for this phone? anything to do to reduce browser battery drain?
If you go into battery usage graph, is the browser the only app listed as using up the battery (and not the screen brightness, or another app that may be contributing to the heavy usage)

correct. if I am using other apps the battery drain isn't near as severe. I keep the display setting "extra dim" enabled all the time and I keep it down as low as I can tolerate. I use a pitch black wallpaper use dark mode in browsers so they have mostly black background with white text.
Phone idle is the only other thing that seems to use a sizeable amount of battery according to the battery usage data in settings.
Sounds about right. Came from a Moto G7 Play (15 months back) and saw similar drain rates. All three devices have similar battery specs which plays into the units being used to assess drain. Is what it is.

Not gonna lie, it makes me want to go back to Motorola when this Pixel bites the dust.

Many Moto's bring a nice package with unique tricks. Gotta do your homework on what features are most important when the time comes.

I definitely did that. I only got the 4a because it was the perfect size and had a headphone jack. I assumed with a newer hardware set and similar sized battery compared to my old phone batter life "should" be better. Nope.
Na, it's more complicated. 4a sports more sensors, brighter/denser display, faster processors, etc. System and personal apps clearly play a role in longevity (behind screen brightness); you'd need to do a detail study to understand what's drawing when and why.
I use to fuss over such matters but find the device lasts a full day for my use case which is all that really matters. Charges up quick from a modest size battery pack when camping/traveling. Just like past Motos.
Not sure who I'll partner with in the next dance. Love Pixel cameras (especially in challenging conditions) and routine updates. Miss some of Moto's innovations, like active display and actions. Needs to be close to AOSP; no Samsung UX butchery. In the end form factor will likely be the deciding factor once non-contenders are ruled out.

I don't know what CPU you came from, but if the Moto only had "small" cores then of course it used less battery. "Big" cores use more power. They go faster too, but if you have a constant load, then they'll eat battery faster.
I don't know if there's a non-root way to disable the big cores, but I suspect you can do it with root (but don't know for sure).
Otherwise, you gotta get your browser to stop running JavaScript. If you're watching video you need to make sure the browser is offloading all the decoding to the hardware codecs rather than doing it on the CPU.
And if the screen is on, it might help to try and get it "more black" (eg. Use night mode) or turn down the brightness. The screen is often the primary user of power when a device is being used.

Thanks for the suggestions. My power complaints are just limited to the browser so I dont think it is just the larger CPUs. I think my standby consumption issues are related to Stock Android as I am now running GrapheneOS and my standby power consumption now matches my old Moto G5 Plus.
As for browser usage consumption, I have tried everything but disabling Javascript. I will try that and see if it breaks anything I use regularly. Thanks for the idea.
tangent back to general power consumption, I typically disable just about everything behind the scenes as I can. I keep the theme on pitch black. I use the extra dim setting to keep screen brightness as low as I can tolerate. I use night mode in browser to keep as much black background as possible. I disable all tap-to-wake or sensor based features. When I was trying to run Android 12, I disabled all the smart services and removed all the google apps I could. I removed all permissions I could. I restricted all apps I could. I disabled adaptive settings, etc. There is a bunch of stuff running in the background on Android 12 and I just could not

I dont think it is all the phone. GrapheneOS has 40% better standby battery usage than stock android 12. On graphene, it matches my old Moto G5 Plus. It is either lazy programmers with inefficient coding these days or it is google having the stock OS do waaaay too much by default with no way to disable it.
I'm trying to figure that out now.

I totally agree on the lazy thing. So many devs now days are so lazy. I develope QuickBase databases and constantly run into extremely poorly setup realms/apps. Just basic stuff. Lol
