I plan to buy a wireless charging chip and stand for my gs5. I leave a otterbox defenders case on my phone at all times because I dont want to lose her.. My question is that will the wireless charging work through the case? Or do i have to take the case off every day. And i have no idea which chip and stand i will buy yet. Here is a link to my case I use. thanks. http://www.otterbox.com/Defender-Series-for-Samsung-GALAXY-S5/sam2-galaxy-s5-set,default,pd.html
There are several threads detailing wireless charging, I suggest you look into one of them.
Short answer is the charging can work through the case. Long answer is your milage may vary.

Maybe. The only people that can really answer your question are those who own the same case as you and have tried it. Or maybe a well written review that tests charging through thick cases if you can find a review that does that.
I don't own an Otter box and you didn't give us any crucial details e.g. how thick the thing is? But my impression is that you own one of the larger, thicker cases. The current chargers work through thin cases but a lot of people with fortress type cases have reported problems. Not to mention that it depends on what brand of charger you have and several other things. I'd say it's iffy, actually I'll venture that it won't work with some charger brands. But if you find a better than average model you may be okay.
Advice? Either buy locally where you can presumably test whether it will charge through your case in the store. Or buy from a mail order vendor with a good return policy and test it first hand.
And just to complicate things.. you should know that there is a battle in progress between several incompatible charging technologies. Most of the current wireless chargers use the Qi system. And Qi really isn't designed to charge through thick cases. But there is an underdog called PMA aka Power Matters or Powermat that use a different technology. Resonant, rather than inductive charging. And it is said to work fine through thick cases.
So regardless of who ends up dominating the market, I'd try to buy a Powermat or PMA product if the price is similar. Keep in mind that you can't mix and match. The piece that goes inside your battery cover (or is built into the cover) has to match the charger. Both need to be Qi or both need to be PMA to work.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply!

Hi people,
I recently bought an S-View Case from Ebay , which of course is not an original samsung case.
However the S-View Functionality doesn't work at all. I thought samsung has enabled 3rd party case support?
I also bought one of these a while ago the prblem is they dont have the chip that activates the sview software. If you notice on the back of your phone there are multiple pins. Some are for wireless charging and some for the S view functionality.
The only way to make these 3rd party cases work is to download an app from the play store, simply search s view. What this does is it uses the proximity sensor to sense when the case is closed and activates a special s view window.
Let me know if this helps

There are a few version available.
1 like the oem rely on the chipset and magnet which is located at the bottom right of the flip cover.
2 rely on apps, there is a magnet on the top left of the flip cover.
3 rely on apps and sensors on the phone.
Guys, I'm going to be launching a wireless charging phone sleeve on Kickstarter in January. The unique selling point will be the Smart app that communicates with the sleeve.
I'm doing research for the launch now to determine which phones to support. If you guys could just share your thoughts that'd be great.
Namely:
Will you as a Samsung Galaxy s5 user invest in a new phone sleeve
Why do you/ dont you use existing portable chargers like powerbanks and Qi chargers
If you know any cool portable wireless chargers
I myself use a Nexus 4 with Qi built in but I haven't found a satisfactory wireless charging solution yet... that's kinda why I worked on my own. Thanks!
Looks very interesting. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

Like it, but will it work with the phone in a case?
Thanks guys! So i take it you will be theoretically willing to get a phone sleeve for the s5? Yes it will work with your existing cases because i'm choosing stretchable materials for ampere, except maybe otterboxes, and the case also has to work with Qi wireless charging. I think lots of cases will espc since we're using a bigger coil.

I use wireless charging and I own power banks. Powerbanks are mostly annoying because of keeping up with cords. But it would be nice to have a small flip put Micro USB and USB for charging and discharging to devices that don't have wireless charging (like my fiancees phone) . Also, I haven't bought a current qi bank because of the fact I can't throw my phone in my pocket and just let it charge. Your solution, depending on the price and size, seems to take care of those concerns for me. I would definitely consider buying it.

YES that problem with portable Qi chargers is exactly what happened to me. I ended up bringing along a wire anyway so my phone could charge in the bag. Thanks for reminding me about that and for the support.
Nice idea.. i am already using a Qi but its no so happy so any other alternative will be consider

Yup, I personally have a Nexus 4 and was super-hyped to try wireless charging, only to find that most Qi products are absolutely rubbish beyond the novelty.
That's why I designed the sleeve to fix a lot of the heat dissipation, durability, looks, portability and alignment issues that plague Qi products. Please do leave your email on the website if you're interested! I'll contact you again just before launch in January.
make this a +1 for me also im IN .
If it will stretch to fit the Commuter Wallet, I'd think about dropping coin on it if the price is reasonable. My QI receiver works through the wallet case so that shouldn't be a problem. I personally find it much easier to carry a spare fully charged battery or two when the situation calls for it.

Actually, I wouldn't recommend you use wireless charging with wallets at that kind of proximity. It might interfere with your credit cards' magnetic strips.

Been using wireless through my wallet case for about 3 months. No issues yet (knock on wood)!

Ok good for that info! I've been using it too, and would say the same. Still, recommended not to slide your credit cards through ampere.

Guys, thanks for the product validation thus far. Now, I need your feedback on the optional app. Here are the proposed features:
I'm doing research for the launch now to determine what features to incorporate in this app:
Display estimated battery life in hrs of phone and ampere
Control when charging starts
find your phone or ampere when one is missing
notifications to recharge at time or location
What other features would you like to see? I've recently posted in the S5 and Nexus 5 forums too, and I've been told not to dilute the product, which I agree with heartily. These are the features I've narrowed it down to. What other things do you think we need to bake in? It will probably be open to developers post-Kickstarter.
Feel free to check the product out over at http://kickstarter.novelsys.co.
Hey guys! Just wanted to update everybody that we've got a teaser video now
let me know what you think before we launch on Kickstarter

I like it. I'll probably get one when you release it. I like the locator function as well. Does it have a wireless charging receiver also? (for charging the unit that is.)
I just went to amazon and bought the fonesalesman receiver and koolpad installed in 10 seconds and it works perfect. And I have one of the thickest phone cases from element case the recon pro.
I also bought a Qi charger for the car ...
After a week of using this I have put koolpad's in two other rooms in the house. It just works slick,
How would your sleeve work would I still be able to use any case I wanted ? This is a must, I must have the freedom to choose what case I want to use ?

Not any case I'm afraid. It should fit most soft cases and slim hard cases. It's really on a case by case basis. (see where I did there?) by Kickstarter, our testing will be more rigorously completed and I'll be able to say exactly to what thickness case Ampere can tolerate.

I'm afraid you'll have to charge Ampere via a MicroUSB. There's less benefit to charging Ampere wirelessly than your phone though.
So what do I need to fit on my phone to use this wirelessly?
As the title says , I bought a cheap S view vase from eBay but it doesn't work. Apparently there needs to be some sort of pin or magnet on the case which isn't there on 3rd party cases ?

Got mine working fine using the instructions HERE. Use the Nadia kernel, the AEL done weird things to my button assignments.
Huge thanks to all involved.
No wonder why it doesn't work ! It's missing the pins :
They have some pins online but the key is getting the exact ones that samsung uses.
Eh it's not worth the hassle , coughed up the extra $$ and bought an original one. Looks sexy.
Hi,
FOr me two missings on this phone were Google Camera which is handled atm and WIreless charging.
To solve the latter, do you think we could find a good cover with integrated Qi wireless charge receiver ?
Or place in the cover (it being a bit thicker but I don't care) to place one ?
Thanks.

I have seen similar setup for other devices. There are multiple videos in youtube.
