Anyone else notice this? When you hold the phone in landscape, the wifi straight drops out? (Most notably when covering the power button end of the phone with the left hand.) Seems to me that having the antennae built into the back panel/battery cover was a wrong design choice.
Edit: And let me add that reception doesn't drop, just the wifi.
we both made a post about this at the same time. I'm having issues also. I didn't notice that it happens in landscape specifically. it happens all the time to me

I'm am no such thing... I think perhaps you should first watch the Video titled:
'You are a NOOB on XDA-Developers'
before you post anything. This issue must have appeared 100s of times on this forum. It would be sensible to use the search feature in future to prevent the forum getting clogged up with the same old topics... I mean it is taking an age now to find anything which is new and worth reading on the sensation forums.
It is not my intention to cause harsh feelings towards other members. However, it's just sometimes easier to convey a point with a slight bit of sarcasm (a concept I know some folk find difficult to grasp) than doing what I am now and stating the obvious about the fact that you should search the forum before posting. IF your issue isn't already in the forum, or it is not particularly related, then you need to post a clear and decisive thread, detailing all of your issues. However I can assure you this has been posted many times in the past week or so and I'm getting sick and tired reading the same old thing!! I'm sorry if I upset you or dented your ego; you'll survive
I hope you continue to enjoy the forum, just as I intend to do myself
Thanks and again I'm sorry for portraying 'stick up my ' behaviour (perhaps a tad extreme response from yourself), just my way of communicating a message; which in future I'll bear in mind because I now know it can cause irrational responses from people, something which I personally do not aspire to cause.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your day.

Mine will be delivered tomorrow so I cannot do any testing right now but by any chance is there a way to change the power setting on wifi? If it is in power saver mode or something similar it could be more susceptible to interference.
Different phones but my HD2 had some weird quirks on Wifi till I forced it to full power on wifi.
Might not help but its something to look at perhaps.

Yea, 10332007 you nailed it... I went to settings > wifi settings > Menu > Advanced and turned on "Best wifi performance" and then it would only drop one bar. (previously dropped 3). battery sucker, but it does decrease the severity of the issue, besides I'd expect some drop in signal with my meaty paws in the way.

No real criticism intended, but I would like to point out a slight flaw in your argument. I am not what I would consider a noob, and I am searching for the very same answer.
Had you actually been nice enough to help this person, you would also help others that are searching for this information too. We all have to wade through a ton of false leads when trying to hunt this type of info down. I find there is quite a bit to sort through sometimes, and it is people that are kind enough to answer these questions (noob or not) that also help so many others.
It seems that this is the spirit in which this community was built upon, I see so many angry and irritable people around this forum these days... it is such a shame.
In this situation, you would not only have helped a noob, but you would have saved time for all the other folks that are trying to locate this info and read the title of this post.
I think he gets it now, guys.
This was his first time posting, relax. Hopefully from now on he'll use the search feature, but for now the least you can do is just help the guy out AND advise him about the search feature. Let's not scare away a new forum member.
Wish I could help you, but I am only getting my Sensation next week.
I don't have this problem at all. Have tried and tried to replicate it, but can't. Glad I don't have this problem.

I've happily owned a G2X for almost 7 months now, and have used a custom rom for essentially the entire time.
Prior to the G2X, i used the HTC HD2 - a Windows 6.5 phone that gained notoriety after having android ported to it through the hard work of developers.
However, one thing that I feel is truly missing from the development community here is what most HD2 devs did; that is, they disclosed the problems with their ROM in the first post of their threads.
So, rather than having to hunt through a 200+ page thread, not knowing what build people are referring to, in order to find out issues with a ROM, it would very much simplify the ROM selection process if devs would disclose known issues such as "non working camera" etc.
Obviously every issue cant be accounted for, but I think the big ones being posted would help clarify a lot of things.
Thoughts?
Edit:
For example, here's a link to one of tytung's HD2 roms (he's one of the more popular developers for the HD2):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860
If you scroll down, you'll see he has a list of "working" and "not working" features.
Nobody has any interest in something like this?
Well the thing is all our rooms are based off stock,cm7, or cm9 in one way or another. So everyone knows of the known issues. If its a weird issue out of the norm its usually stated.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Reasoning above doesn't hold up, because each rom has things that are fixed or not fixed individually.
I'm not sure of the reasoning, and i guess different devs might have different reasons. Depending on their priorities and skill levels.
Of course if someone is cooking and theming and/or just vanilla compiling then maybe there's less reason (and perhaps more reason to deemphasize bugs?).
Anyways, i agree that an informative first post with a real change log and working and non working features is a very handy thing to have.

I don't think everyone knows the issues. In fact, if you're new to the community you certainly wont.
Stating the problems is what sparked a ton of competition in the HD2 dev community. The first guy to fix the camera, first guy to fix bluetooth powerdrain etc always got a ton of donations and a better rep. I just don't see that competition here at all.
I don't care about a custom bootloader image or some custom wallpapers. I care about the issues being fixed, and I would love to know which devs are the ones fixing them!

It really doesn't matter who fixed them, as long as they're fixed. It's not a competition over here. The devs here help each other, especially with ICS. If one of us has a fix for something, it's shared and we all get it. Majority of the people doing the reading that they're supposed to do know the issues that we have with this phone. It just comes down to, are you willing to read to get all of the facts?

Exactly. We don't do this for competition. We do this as a hobby and we all learn from each other. And even the best developers out there are still learning. If you think developers do this for money you are sadly mistaken, money is in app development not roms.
We all have families, kids, school, jobs and a real life. Therefore free time is hard to come by.
You can go to any development thread skim over the last two pages and have the known issues.

I guess your reading comprehension isn't very good. I explained why and how there may be differences. If your experience is mainly doing what I called "vanilla compiling" or theming then I guess I could see how you would generalize that all ROMs will be the same though.

I'm not sure why you feel the need and give yourself the permission to get up on your high horse here. I'm aware of source control and I was using it and writing C code nearly 20 years ago although I'm not a programmer now nor was I then but thanks for informing me. I also note the lack of a git or other source control published in the first post of your ROM in the dev section. As I'm sure you know many (most?) other ROM's don't either in there.
Not sure what you're afraid of to be getting your back up. Nobody cares if you just barely learned how, or are an expert at, writing code. People will appreciate a community contribution regardless.

Well plainly you have not read the umpteen million threads regarding lg and nvidias lack of open source. If you want the source for any of the roms I've posted that are based off of a stock rom. My source is right there in the rom. Decompile it and look at it. Just like i decompiled it and modded it. You want the source for my cm/aosp based roms its on my github. Want the source for aokp? Its on github and gerrit.
People clearly appreciate my contributions in the android community. I'd say 1000s of downloads and being kanged countless times can prove that. And in case you haven't noticed their aren't many devs in the g2x community. And certainly hardly any of them are going to come answer a thread posted in the wrong section.
Lastly I am not on any high horse nor have I ever been. I have done more then my part to help and contribute to this community. When you post something constructive then you can try to bring your constructive criticism my way.

Pretty sure this response answers the OP's question far better than I ever could have. Thanks for demonstrating.
I've been a member of xda-dev since 2006 but have made only a few posts.
I'm interested in becoming more active and contributing as a developer, but I have some pretty strict posting restrictions because I'm a "new" user. (Post timing, edit timing, no links, etc)
Would it be possible to have these restrictions removed based on that fact that I've been a member for 6 years without incident?
Thanks,
tekkdrone
i don't think time on this board has to do with anything. you've been a member for 6 years yet only have 4 counted posts, which means you probably havent contributed much[not dissing you] to have the initial restrictions lifted

I caught that too. But I'm the noob, so maybe I'm counting posts wrong. But if I have to post over 300 posts to lift my "10 post" restriction, I'll never be able to post in the non-general forums.
Yeah, I also find the restrictions a little annoying. I've been working with Android for a few years, but I never joined up here. Now that I have, I can't be seen as a developer until I've made a certain amount of posts. Not the end of the world, but still not a very good idea considering that anyone can easily get around this.
Agreed.

Not that I fall into this category or anything, but what is the post count to post as a developer?
This is the first forum I've been on with these kinds of restrictions. I find it odd.
The post count restriction is for those users that only join to spam the development threads with "MY CAMERA DOESN'T WORK. WHY DOESN'T IT WORK?!!?!!!!!1"
If you want the restrictions lifted, just follow a thread and join the conversation.

These sort of questions just cause anger and waste time - both for the devs who are trying to do a fantastic job for free and the people who actually want to join in and have the capability to help the devs with testing and troubleshooting.
I hope that you understand a bit clearer now. I, personally, don't think the 10 post limit is enough. I don't believe any XDA member should be able to post into the dev threads unless they have been approved by at least one dev - based on previous posts, helping other users and general attitude.

There is no XDA strategy. It's just a place for people to tinker with their phones.

No it is not directly proportional to the thanks meter.

I think the best thing you can do is to report arrogance and hope the user gets some sort of warning. I have also witnessed some comments that were unnecessary and that could really put new users off asking questions here. That is a real shame imo.

+1 to these, some people who are new just don't understand how the forum layouts and whatnot work, but rather than being more polite about it, the more experienced ones go off at the new people. Pretty hard for the new people to get help that way.

I only really see "arrogance" displayed in two fashions:
1. The occasional Dev war drama. This really only happens rarely and has settled down quite a bit since some ROM devs have moved on to other devices.
2. Noob squashing. The fact is, Android is a victim of it's own success. In the G1 days, XDA was a true home for hackers to exchange information. Now that Android has such a large worldwide marketshare, more and more folks are coming here to enhance their devices and free them from their cell provider's greed and bad decisions, regardless of their technical level. I'd bet the CM10 thread could be condensed into a one page FAQ which would eliminate hundreds of pages of repeat questions, but in reality, the types of people that frustrate us so much wouldn't even take the time to read that. The only solution here is help or ignore...flaming just triples the number of pages dedicated to a noob mistake.
You get nasty responses when you refuse to read and the question has been asked soo many times.. or you post a question in the general section... or break any rules
I've had people not read the downgrade thread and pm asking what to do.. when if you read it, you realize its nearly noob proof

I think that one of the problems is that the pros try to distance themselves from the noobs. The problem with that is that the noobs will only feel more ignored and try harder to get their voice heard. It's a problem almost all forums have, but it seems more serious here on xda than anywhere else I've been. I think much of the talent here gets wasted. Answers get hidden away deep in overly long topics and poor communication skills make things worse.
I get the feeling that many of the threads here would have worked better in wiki-form, where each issue has its own page, instead of each topic.
But these are just a noob's impression after a few days here.

^^^ So much this. ^^^
@OP: I don't think what you're seeing is arrogance. More likely frustration. <S>About those damn n00bs who keep pissing all over 'our' forums.</S> But flinging poop at them doesn't result in neater cleaner tidier forums.. The catch22 here is that there is no real way to tell people (noobs and grumps alike) to stop polluting the forums without engaging in forum pollution yourself.
Also, it is not related to the thanks meter. If anything, the 'thanks' feature is meant to keep the forums cleaner, by eliminating "Wow thanks!"-posts.
(Maybe we need buttons for "Wrong section!" and "Use the search!" too. Actually, we do have a button for "Wrong section!", it's labeled "/!\ Report".)
-Jobo
As was previously was stated it frustration over most issues.
If people took a few seconds to try and search or post in correct sections things would be a tiny bit easier. Though since its the internet conflicts or bad attitudes will never subside

+1 to these, some people who are new just don't understand how the forum layouts and whatnot work, but rather than being more polite about it, the more experienced ones go off at the new people. Pretty hard for the new people to get help that way.

No reason to be polite, when the answer or rules are stickied or found on the first page. For instance, development forum is only for development, and there's a sticky emphasizing that. Try they post questions there anyway.
So while it's understandable they don't know the layout yet, they can read. If they ask a question, they'll obviously be reading the post in case is has their answer. So they can just as easily read the stickies.
Not to mention, it's always good to take a moment and read stickies or the first page, before asking questions.

No matter how wrong they are, you still don't need to get rude like I've seen happen. Yes, there are a lot of frustrating situations, but that still doesn't constitute the flaming. If you were new, maybe you might make a mistake like that, and wouldn't want to have people flaming you, it'd just get more confusing for you.

Exactly. There is no excuse, ever. You either answer and help, or ignore, or report.
Making an unhelpful off-topic post to verbally smack someone in the face is a waaaay worse offense than posting in the wrong section or asking something that's already been asked and answered in the post right above it. It also has much more negative impact on the forums than some stray posts.
I see it as arrogance and frustration. There are many of us that are unseasoned in the knowledge of phones. When we have knowledge in a particular field and become wise, we sometimes become impatient with others for what is simple to us. Very few people knew years ago what they know now. Life is about development, meant to cultivate and refine, and it happens in stages or seasons. To the well-seasoned people, (pros) please try to understand our ignorance or unfamiliarity. When a noobie asks something, try to understand you didnt always know what you know. Show some humility, you can better help us by understanding we are students to the knowledge you have. When you teach, we can learn, and go away more intelligent in that field, then we can help others on a lower level. . Example: The Pros have level 10, some noobies may have level 5. But that level 5 noobie can help a level 3 noobie, easing the burden on the level 10 pro.
On the other hand, many noobies may start asking questions and expect the pro to do allllllll their work, NO GOOD. There is a friend of us all, his name is Google, he has helped me many times. I dont expect for the pros to do all of the work for me, as none of us should. We as noobies do need to spend more time reading and researching, if we fail to understand, then ask the question. Sometimes we all overlook things and it may take a noobie to make a pro recall that thing that was overlooked. As the commercial says, "you can learn alot from a dummy' (noobie). I even see some pros ride the coat tails of other pros and more or less follow their leads. If the first pro is hard on a noobie the second pro adds his two cents. Thats not necessary.
Let us both, pro and noobie, do our part to develop and keep good karma here at XDA. I do like XDA very much and recognize and respect the abundance of talent which is here. It is fascinating for us to learn and share what we know with others and to see we have helped someone. Im interested in learning and if possible over time to share what I learn with others in a humble manner. So if the community will have me, I plan on being here.
One other productive point of dialogue. I have noticed that recently when you create a new thread XDA automatically searches your subject line and shows you threads with similar subject lines. I think that is helpful.
But it all goes to show that maybe the search functions could be reviewed a bit more with newer members input.
I really like XDA btw, but just thinking about ways to make it better. It may be that those kinds of auto search functions should appear when you are posting in a thread, and not just creating a new one.
There may also be ways to make the search functions more intuitive. Sometimes, for example when you search threads (and not just posts) the default screeen sends back a bunch of threads and it becomes hard to judge which thread may actually contain the most relevant info you are looking for (since the subject line may not be helpful). There may be other info the search could show you (ie how many times the word comes up in that particular thread, etc).
I am sure XDA is always looking at ways to make things better. But it would be interesting to hear what new folks have to say and the challanges they face when searching for information.

I agree with you AK, It is very helpful and a nice feature. It reduces the amount of clutter. I went looking to start a new thread on the subject titled "Arrogance vs Humility", and boom, the search suggestions showed me a few threads on the subject. It does become time consuming when cleaning up the forums. Most times when we want to know something we want it on the spot and dont take the time to look first. More so than not, the question has already been answered.
Another issue is the xda app does not have an option to filter the search results. It's pretty well useless. Main reason I switched to tapatalk.
One S | Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2 | Viper 1.2.1 | Bricked Beastmode
There's also not a lot of stickies in the Q & A section... I think we might want to start a project with moderators to propose some stickies and have folks volunteer to create and update the original posts in such stickies.
For example an RUU FAQ, and a Wifi faq, perhaps another on different hboot versions what that even means, one on custom recoveries, kernels, etc. I posted what I thought was a more comprehensive review of sd card issues people have had and fixes and asked it be moved to q & a (since the one stickied there is pretty basic and hasn't been updated). My explanation is still getting buried in the general section for now http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36372149#post36372149... It's not a big deal though.
But I do find that really good OPs (ie original posts) can do a world of good for someone who is new. Stickies and other OPs should be updated frequently especially as people start explaining their issues.
Another good example of a post that should be stickied in Q&A but is lingering in General is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2076086

AGREE completely, some people just believe that just because they've been here for what seems forever and (believe) they have put in their time that they can actually treat people like they're complete idiots and that is just WRONG! I have been around for awhile and never that I can remember have ever treated members like this plus each individual may have better understandings of many other devices or aspects of several other types of electronics compared to many, than again some just are not too familiar with this or that type of device possibly because there are as we can agree slight differences in each. Why can we not just treat everyone as people of a large and (sometimes) great community also, just explain things like the way you wanted them explained to you when you first arrived or switched devices and I just received the BEST experience in my thread for the past week from 'Darknites' and another member whom I'm having issues with writing his username lol but he knows who he is. I try to learn from what has been taught to me through trial and error and lots of it but members like above stick in and help even though I know they were getting irritated lol, when I can I help those with similar issues or with issues I possibly know the answer to. PLEASE just help, no need for rude degrading comments to anyone no matter how much they may not be catching on also you can type many things in 'Google' or even in this forum's search but may not get exactly what your looking for especially like me when this is your daily driver device and can't afford or are not into testing many different devices.
Thanks.

This is absolute state about xiaomi mi a1. not only the company itself does everything to ruin this phone, but the community is the most cancerous one i've ever seen, and trust me i have seen a lot of communities. full of analphabetes spreading fake/false information, or repeating one thing over and over like a parrots... this is joke.. if i were a developer (like Franco) i'd feel insulted being a part of this circus, and drop this community and device..
I wouldn't care if xiaomi provided reliable software, but official roms are like the community - pathetic. i hope i will be able to install some good custom rom (i didnt do this in ages, but mi a1 software is complete utter ****).
one big joke, joke of the android one. well i got tricked, shame on me.
Well I think that you don't have taken a look of Moto G4's community. The sources were out and there was some development, but the people made it hard to read in the threads. I don't blame the phone, both Moto G4 and Mi A1, but the people that doesn't read anything and want everything in their hands, either way I find this device and community better than the Moto G4's community. I don't know what's the problem with your device but I am plenty satisfied with the Mi A1 for the price that have.

Well i dont have experience on xda, im noob and newbie!
Anyway i think the community in a forum must always guided by the moderators who enforce the forum rules.
Bad topic/post must be deleted from the mods.
Very few community are able to auto-moderate themselves.
About the phone, yes xyaomi dont do a very good job, but if you take in consideration the devices price, androidone and so one, i cannot complain too much about.
atm i dont have root, and using just naptime x from francisco franco + optimizations left and right... i have a lot of juce from the battery and the phone, for his cost, run pretty good.

definetly not most cancerous(as you said) forum in XDA.
your just focus in this mi a1 forum cos you have that device.
back in my htc desire series(hd/x/sensation) and moto(x victara/2015) same people always complain and dont get satisfied on their phone. i still have some of my phone but the forum is dead/stopped devolpment cos its an old phones.
the problem is mods dont care unless someone report a thread. i think they should look into threada if they have free time and not wait for someone to report it. no offense mods.
Mi A1 best phome i habd owned so far for the price and build quality i nerver had any issues with. thou im still a huge fan of custom roms and kernels i still flashed it for more better stability and performance.
and i think this kind of thread should be closed its inviting arguments and hate if you know what im saying!

yeah. we definately need more threads about things that were talked 1000000 times already. a harsh talk with arguments is not good thing on discussion subforum! you're right!
about the device, its one of the worst i had despite the price. even crappy ZTE was better supported during life cycle than this piece of **** mi a1.

Well, why is one of the worst? what are the issue you facing beside xyaomi being slow to release kernel sources and upgrading to oreo and bugfixing?
Say: is bad
without give the reason why is bad is not a discussion, is a rant.
a rant is toxic in a forum, in a forum must be discussions.
Why this thread isn't been already closed, it's ridiculously bad.
You are critical with the community but what have you done for it, guess what, nothing.
You are just here to scream in every theread without realizing that you are one of those "toxic community", instead of complaining try to help someone, port or develop something.

If you want custom ROMs you need to WAIT, read it two times.
Devs are working on it as you can see.
Or you can build your own "Working custom ROM", good luck for your work

@Moderator Committee please close this thread as it's useless and inviting hate. This is not adding any value and it's just bringing disgrace to hardworking developers who are working in their free time without any payment from us to bring out custom roms, tweaked OS.
@ OP stop cribbing and whining. If you really want to be heard, crib n whine on Xiaomi' forum not XDA. Or better, buy ZTE n stay satisfied.

it's Xiaomi community ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The device is cheap, solidly built, running stock android Oreo, receiving monthly security updates, has a decent camera (which can be improved by root/gcam), has full day battery life, has great audio through headphones, bluetooth calling works fine, wifi doesn't cut out anymore since last update... Apart from the fact it has no NFC, I don't see what all the b*tching is about?
This is the worst topic ever on XDA. Why the hate?
