I am hoping to get a custom ROM made for both the Next6 and Next7, so if anyone would like to help here are the factory ROM's.

Right now my friend and I are working on making the Next6 have a full read/write partition with permanent root access.
I'm interested. The Next6 is on sale at Big Lots for $149...
I'm looking to pick one up. Please keep m posted!

I just got mine yesterday and subscribed to this thread. Please keep us informed.
Li'm currently counting down the minutes till biglots opens. in a rush to cash my check, and grab my new cheapo tablet, to be home in time to go to my kids dr appointment.
anyone got a full list of specs on the next6?
EDIT: z4root works perfectly. Now I'm waiting on this ota firmware update to download.
It feels sluggish compared to my hd2 but I expected that. But it does render HD video quite nicely. Rooting was a breeze, and if you pick it up at biglots, be sure to splurge 15 extra for an 8gb SD card.
I spoke to the company today because my OTA has been trying to download for 2 days.
Apparently the OTA only changes the Boarder Books to a different carries since Boarders is closed. IT DOES NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE OR OS.
Please let us know of any ROMS available on this device that would be very helpful.

Were you able to get a perminent root with z4root? I could only get a temporary root to work. What tools to use for a perminent solution
Got my next6 a day ago. Thanks all for the BigLots tip.
i think the way the image is stored on the tablet you'll have to flash a rom that is already rooted. Im not very familiar with cooking roms but i know you'll have to use afptool to unpack the image make the changes recreate the crc for the image and repack it.
From what I've been able to glean from frantic web searching, the system partition is cramfs and is read only. Temporary root only.
Also, its possible to access the recovery menu using adb reboot recovery, but its not of much use since the thing only has two dpad buttons.

I am very interested in this also ; I have tried to run some of the next 2 & 3 roms on this device (and they boot) but they don't really work right (IE: the touch screen doesn't work)
hopefully we can get this going!
i've got the rom dumped, just having a spot of bother mounting a cramfs file under ubuntu.
since i've last posted i found out a bit more about the hardware involved, and how its more or less a generic 7 inch rockchip tablet, minus a few buttons, which means a good majority of the work has already been done.

bit of difference is the rkupdater program doesn't work unless you can get the tab into a flasher mode of some sort. However, if you just drop the update.img in the sdcard root and insert the card while the tab is running, it seems to kick into the updater properly.
hold down the right hand arrow
with the Pad turned off hold the right hand arrow to put the tablet into update mode ; then you can use the RKAndroidBatchUpgrade.exe..... (you do need the USB driver - found on the first page of the next2 next3 thread)

thanks. figured out through trial and error if i held both facebuttons and hit the reset while it was plugged up, it'd get into update mode.
your way needs less buttons. still at a loss because while i can dump the update.img and extract it, i cant seem to open up the system.img inside of it.
any suggestions? i pulled it using rkdump.
EDIT: nvm got it, had to pull the system.img from the device separately and add it back to update.img
long story short, i've got market, will be working on root next.

here ya go, (Next6)regular rom + market, still haven't got root worked out quite yet.
is this for the next6 or 7?
Oh I see now this is a rom for a next6
Next6 Base rom for editing
heres a stock copy of update.img with an editable system.img if you feel like adding your own apps or customizing it a bit further.
happy modding
I got one of these bad boys today and its a pretty decent little fellow.
I think with a root and well made custom rom it can really shine.
EDIT, does anyone know a way to change the icons they used? I dont really care for them because they look warped and garrish. I did manage to replace the launcher with launcherPro, "adw would crash and default to a debug launcher".
Also does anyone know how one could update SAM? Can I just reinstall the apk and it replace teh factory installed one? Also is there any better marketplaces than SAM? It seems kinda limited and lacking.
I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade the next6 from 2.1 to 2.2/3~
I'm not requesting it or anything as I personally don't know anything about android or how the next6's rom works.
Thanks
I believe it has to be rooted before you can upgrade the firmware to another version.
Also I have noticed a issue with the custom rom above. I cannot download any apps on the marketplace for some reason. Anyone know how I could clear its cache or reset this device?
EDIT: If I do a "factory reset" though the privacy section in settings, it seems to fix the market. Of course this completely wipes the device, also the market seems to break the same way again, extremely easily.
Basically you can download a few apps, go to the homescreen, then come back to find that you magically cannot download ANY applications. Ive tried killing the market app using the advance task manager, ive tried clearing the markets cache, and even restarting the device. The only thing that works is completely restoring the device. I am hoping that you will be able to fix it, or tell me how to fix it. XD
I installed the following applications. Not sure if this matters, but it seems like market breaks when I make ADW the default launcher.
ADW Launcher
Nook
Also I have a SD card in the unit.
EDIT:
I have rooted out the cause of the problem, changing the default homescreen/launcher seems to screw with market. So while you can install and use another launcher, you CANNOT set it as the default without it screwing up the android market.
EDIT:
Humm, well color me confused, because last night I managed to switch the home launcher without it interfearing with market. But this morning when I booted up the device I could not download any applications. Could it be possible that it is deleting key files when I restart the device?
I replaced my first Galaxy Note 10.1 with Amazon about a week ago after experiencing random crashes. These crashes cause the display to shut off for about 10 seconds and then the tablet returns to the lock screen. After the crash the app open before the crash is completely killed. Any information that was unsaved is unrecoverable. This happened during class using S-Note and I lost a fairly large document. I felt as if I would no longer be able to trust the tablet for important notes because I never knew when it would crash.
Up until today, I assumed the root injected system or root in general caused this issue but I did not have evidence otherwise. I had not seen a thread about this so I assumed I was the only one. Today I was able to re-produce the crash multiple times on my tablet, and two of my friends with the Note 10.1 as well.
If there is a developer who can possibly investigate this issue I think it could help the community.
The crash can be reproduced by:
Opening Polaris Office > New Document > Sheet 2007 (excel) > Put data in any cell > Cut the entire column > try to paste the data in any other column.
Keep in mind this error has occurred in many other apps such as S-Note, calendar, and using the launcher. This is the only specific function that I have been able to re-produce.
Please let me know if any one else in the community has experienced this issue and what app it has crashed in.
I try to reproduce it folowing ur step. But, nope..no crash here. Everything is smooth for me..

I realized the 3 tablets we did it on were all updated to the OTA system update before it was pulled. If you are not on the update it may not be the same.
I tried it on my brother pre-ota and his did not crash. I'm really wanting to reach out to the community to see if anyone has experienced system crashes similar to this.

Just tried on my non-updated note and no crash.
Thanks to everyone who has tried. I will continue to find out what is common between our tablets. My brothers note popped up with a paste window that I had never seen before on my tab.

Hello, I got my Samsung Note 10.1 used, I loved it so much when I first got it that I dont remember if it was having issues, I think an app crashed and I disregarded it because I planned to factory reset assuming it would fix any problems. I didnt root it because honestly I've never been without su, sep of last year was when I got my first smart device, ever, a pantech burst and I had it rooted immmediatly and I wanted to experiance the differance. So my samsung isn't rooted, i checked with root checker, just to make sure, just now. I didn't try to replicate the crash using the following, (so, not sure, but ill try it and if it does I'll post results.) 'Cause random apps are crashing left and right, some crash right after instillation upon opening. Theres no noticable relitivity to the crashes, in the sence that the crashing apps are categorically random and I tried "uninstall, reinstall" ,and "repeated" also having same result . I'll admit I have a bit of an app addiction, so... using blk mart and mobo on wifi, I've sat in market with continous installations and some crashed before they were even opened, (I love utillities and tools which most all were found via researched and haveing good reveiws online before Instillation fyi). I feel almost all have crashed at least once, I've factory resetted my pantech numorous times, due to a hacker exboyfriend, that I've followed strict precautions , hoping to avoid my strainuous reset routine of app and pic transfer because I've had so many password changes and
Hijacked emails, I've done a total of three resets, and apps that worked fine before would crash upon reinstillation (after transfer to pantech and back). Also the keyboreds, I like full and hackers, (for key prefrence, ive only ever hacked my own stuff to get them back, I've never hacked another person, fyi) and even using google's and factory keyboard, they have random, yet sometimes specific gliches, example; trying to type my zip code into assurance wireless portal, it wouldn't type at all, or it would type all sevens, ect., Untill ultimately i just give up (which is greatly out of character for me, I'm very patient and persistant expecially when it involves online applications of importance, it just reminded me, also, my touhes have been quirky. I plan to reset once again in a moment, and I gotta have su, I dont like this unrooted crap, lol, so I'm gonna root it and ill post if it acts the same which I figure baed on past fix attempts, it probably will. Also this was my first stop on my research agenda, so I'll post my findings, btw this was a gift, cant afford a replacement, anyways I love my awesome forward facing speakers and my so freakin useful split screen. Im not giving up, so pls help, all advice, no matter the level of crudness, Im familiar with techman impatience, and Im not a panzy. Thx, later.

I sure have, what makes u ask, if ya dont mind me askin, why is that a problem? It seems to work fine. Whats ur advice? Info, pls.
Mine, an N8013, has been experiencing similar problems, but with some differences. It randomly crashes as described in the original post but also quits apps, especially gmail, Dolphin browser and Titanium and returns to the Home screen. Attempting to re-open the ssme app or a different app or to wake up the device will cause it to flicker between the last crashed app and the Home screen a couple times before settling down. I don't know if the problems are reproducable. They occur without any pattern of precipitating actions. I, too, need to get this solved. Any help will be appreciated. Oh, yes, my N8013 is rooted.
Good day all.
Last summer I accepted to install Google Now after some suggestion from Google. I quickly realized that this was extremely intrusive and overtook my pad time and again. At the time I blamed that on the fact that my pad was fairly new and was extremely buggy and unstable in every respect.
Now, after many updated and firmware fixes, my Transformer TF700 is much more stable. Lately Google Now has started popping up unasked overtaking the pad. It crashes whatever application I am using and just sits in the lower left corner as if waiting for me to use it. While my pad goes through these episodes, that can last from few minutes up to half an hour, my pad is completely useless.
I have uninstalled everything I can find that resembles Google Now but that does not seem to be enough. I simply can not do anything at all. Anything I try to do the Google Now crashes. I have been able to "force" my way into the app manager (meaning I just make continuous attempts to get into setting/Apps until successful) but there is no Google Now available under running apps.
I have installed all updates and am at version 4.1.1
Any ideas what I can do? This is just too annoying and just last night this behavior prevented me taking meeting minutes in a very important meeting.
Help! Please!

Google now should work fine on your tablet. You definitly have some issue with your OS, I suggest you should download the full firmware from Asus, do a factory reset then reflash the full firmware. This should fixed your Google now and anything else too.

I gather you are on the stock ROM? You cannot actually uninstall any system module on stock; you can only disable them (same result on the exterior, though).
You could give unlocking and installing a custom ROM a thought: they generally either do not include Google Now at all or only at your own discretion (with CROMI, for example, it is an optional install). Are you rooted? If so, you can try installing Titanium Backup and freeze system modules in the app list and hunt it down that way. It seems to be starting up now, missing some component or access. I do not have it installed at all anymore (I found it useless out of the box, and although people recommended it as becoming better with time as it 'learned' what to present me with, I didn't find any improvement on finding the info myself by hand, and it is too US-centered for us Europeans, anyway -- I have no use for yesterday's American Football results.

I suppose I will attempt this and try to choke Google Now after reflashing.
I found the firmware on ASUS web but now I do not know how to proceed. I will look for info about reflashing.
What is mu best option regarding backing the tablet up? I have rather a lot of stuff locally on the tablet that I wish not to loose.
Thanks.

You are correct, I am on the stock ROM and I have not rooted yet. The tablet was so unstable in the first few weeks after I got it so I did not dare void the warranty yet. After it has stabilized I might root it if there is a reason to.
Google Now is WAY to intrusive and, like you said, to US-centric to be of much use to me.
Is there a usable backup solution that does not require me to be rooted?
Thanks,

Download the full firmware from Asus, unzip the file then copy the unzipped file to the root of your micro sdcard, you should see a notification for update, tab on it and let it rip! BTW, without root, not much you can do even try to backup your device.(it's not going to be a complete backup but a half ass one).

Hi. ASUS has an Unlock Device App on its support page. If I get that and, backup, and reflash will I not be back to untooted? If that is so,will I not have trouble restoring my stuff?
As you realize I have not given this much time. I just want to use my devices and not have to be plagued by stuff like this. To me, my phone is a utility first, toy second. I do not have the time to play with it as much as I would like and therefore this kind of operation is all a bit blurry.
I am an IT manager and have been for over 20 years so I am technically aware but have not given my current Android platform enough time yet.
Many thanks,

Well, if you want your device to run really well, then you need to unlock your device and flash custom rom/kernel. Many ppl kicked themselves in the bud for not doing this sooner. Sure if you unlocked, warranty is voided, but it well worth the hassle. OK back to your topic, in order to root, without unlocking, you need to downgrade back to ICS version .30, root your device, install OTA root keeper, then do incremental upgrade back to JB. The only advantage with root is so you can install rooted backup app to backup all your apps (system apps, user's apps and all the settings), rooted will not improve your device performance at all, but if you unlocked and flash custom rom, you will see a huge improvement on performance.
So I got my Nvidia Shield a while back. The first thing I did when getting it was installing all the updates. Eventually after the final update was installed, I did a full factory reset of the device.
I have hardly any apps installed besides the essential Google applications, but my Nvidia Shield still feels remarkably slow. Chrome is practically unusable, and switching between apps is not a pleasant experience at all. That said, benchmarks and games perform wonderfully, which has me a bit puzzled. There doesnt seem to be any problems with memory leaks as there is plenty of RAM available. I do tend to restart it quite often just to see if it makes a difference, but I doesnt really feel like it has much of an impact.
Does anyone here have similar issues at all? I have worked with Android quite a bit and never have I experienced a system run Android so much worse than you would expect given the hardware specifications. My Nexus 10 feels a lot more snappy in general use.
Thanks for any help
All I can say is that I have a similar experience to you, although I have quite a lot of applications installed. I don't have any solutions for you, only to wait and hope that nvidia optimises the software for the hardware in the next update (Android 5.1 hopefully)
It's up to you, but I will recommend you to try this:
1) Unlock bootloader and Root (If you haven't).
2) Use CWM in this thread as custom recovery, I know TWRP is fancier but has some issues while flashing and wiping stuff, tending to not cleanly install things.
3) Try @BitOBSessiOn custom CM12 ROM here.
4) As stated there, avoid CM gapps, we don't know why but they are culprit of making the system lag A LOT making it almost unusable as you posted, specially if you frequently use Facebook and Chrome. Instead use the minimal gapps posted there.
5) Really important step: Activate Developer Options and disable all animations, lollipop men leak resides on a function called when the system draws them, so the only temporal fix for this is disabling them, after that, reboot and kill any bloatware app on options > apps (G+, FB, Messenger, Vine, Chrome, etc)
6) Profit
I've had this problem too.
I just turned off battery saver. It got too low, automatically turned on and I didn't realize but when I turned it off, it got way faster.

The Lollipop memleak bug is pretty easy to detect though and that's not what's causing the performance issue on the Shield Tablet. At least not in my case. While I would normally be the first to unlock my bootloader and port CM to my new device, I would want to keep my tablet stock.
Im glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing issues so Im going to assume that there's nothing specifically wrong with my device in particular. I guess Ill give Nvidia one more chance to rectify performance issues with their next update, otherwise I'm selling the tablet and buying a Nexus 9 or something else.
I have the same experience. I have flashed the latest recovery image, unlocked and rooted. I have disabled apps I don't need and does not have a lot of apps installed. It is unbelievable slow. Like stated above Chrome is almost useless and switching apps is painful. I am using my Nexus 10 too, the Shield tablet will collect dust until there is a fix released.
If I have the time I will try flashing CM12 but I rather stay stock.
You should give it a shot...
Chrome lag totally solved. Most Nvidia apps work. Only deal breaker is the controller, but a ps3 controller can be paired via BT using sixaxis app.

This has almost convinced me to switch to cm12.
If it just werent for the loss of Dabbler, some other Nvidia apps and the fact that I have a looooot of apps installed...
Not worried about gamepad, because I use an ipega 9023.
I may have found the holy grail of slow laggy freezy hell! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.memory.manager under tasks go to 3 dot menu at top right choose minfree manager pick the top silder and max it out. Hit apply, let app stay in background and proceed with speedy happy days.
I don't know why but it won't keep the settings after boot no matter what I do but I can live with it now and don't fantasize about smashing it with a rock anymore.
I should mention short of non-stock Nvidia roms I tried EVERYTHING twice! This just works for 3 days now perfectly. I actually might even trust it in a week for actual work applications. My poor old Nexus 7 gen one was totally owning the Shield except for game until now.
I have a LTE USA model running rooted 4.4 Kit Kat. I would guess this will work with 5 as well.
Please remove. (Double post)

Root your tab. Do a nandroid backup, backup your apps with titanium backup, flash cm or team eos rom (gotta plug my stuff, restore your apps with titanium. If you don't like it, restore your nandroid and you're back like nothing ever happened.

I have it rooted, with xposed, and a lot of apps. I may try CM over the weekend.

Dabbler works fine on CM. It's on the Play Store.

And GRID also works fine. The only deal breakers (and the ones every dev is working hard to make em work on AOSP) are console mode and the controller wireless pairing.

That's contradictory. I have a really tiny LMK value for foreground apps (foreground= 8mb, Visible=16, secondary=32, hidden=64, content provider=96, empty=128 ) so apps in the foreground are killed only if system goes under 8mb of free ram, and have no lag, but I'm on CM12.1. So I really don't know how this is working but I'm glad for you. Although it may drain your battery faster BC android is killing apps as soon as they go to the foreground to keep that amount of free ram and is using more CPU cycles to load them back when you need them again, that's what I get. But anyone with more knowledge maybe could guide us why this is working???
Interesting, it's working but I didn't even try any other variables. I will try your settings and get back. Needless to say battery life is next after usability.

Ok tried your suggestion verbatim. It immediately was back in useless mode as I have been calling it. Without a reboot it took me at least 15min to get back to here. Still could not type so minmanged back to previous settings and its running. Weird.
My test would have been run Facebook, chrome & this app with poweramp music. Never got halfway before it got all James May on me. Are we running the same tablet? Any thoughts on why we could have opposed settings and get different successful results.

Also when it slows down it gets warmer the settings I'm using leave it pretty cool in comparison.
I'm on stock 5.0.1, 32gb SD + internal memory almost full. I experience some lag mainly with chrome and switching app. Yestetday I tried to set the power saver to "max performance" and the everything seems much smoother..
Make sure you SD cards are formatted with NTFS. exFAT is fine for 32gb, but if you have a 64GB or higher, the card needs to be formatted in a PC using NTFS...
Don't ever let your main ram storage memory get below 500meg.
If somehow you run out of memory,, let's say sub 10megs then all manner of weird things begin to happen including reboots and app crashing. You can jam that external sd1 card full however.
I reset mine several times and tried everything I saw in these threads about the lagginess and stuff.
In the end, I found the solution. I returned the NST and exchanged it for a new iPad Mini 2 32gb Retina Screen... No really.
I love Android on the phone, but it just seems that the tablet arena isn't anywhere near as far along and sorted out yet. Buggy, almost too many options, so you wonder how much love each model gets from the manufacturer, etc... I hate to have a new tablet for $300, and the only way to get it to run the way it was supposed to run out of the box, is to void the warranty, root and install a custom ROM on it, and give up some features in the process.
I like ROMs for things that they do above and beyond the stock experience. I don't feel that I should pay that much for a device and have a ROM be a requirement just to get it to run decently...
So, for my tablet needs, I had to go to the dark side. Good luck!
I will still rock my Note 4 and don't see myself going to Apple for my phone needs any time soon, but for a general purpose tablet for Netflix, email, browsing and basic games... I agonized for hours over this but in the end I just pulled the trigger and exchanged it.
Hello, great forum!
Joined specifically to ask these questions. I did use "search" here for a while before registering but, never found a clear-cut answer.
So, can I turn my fire 8hd into a regular android tab? Is it possible to COMPLETELY wipe the amazon os and run a normal launcher?
-I never registered device to prime, I followed a guide to add google stuff and nova launcher but, I hate hitting the home button and seeing the amazon home flash before going to nova. It is updated to 5.60. I've been reading some of the threads for hijacking the os (so many versions!) and it just made me even more confused.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Hi, at the moment there is no other OS for these tablets but you can use Launcher Hijack V3 with nova launcher, this should get rid of the flickering of fire OS showing and at least give the appearance of a normal android tablet.

Thanks for the reply!
Yup, I had installed Hijack v3 when I added everything else but I still see the amazon home flicker briefly.
Next questions would be, have previous version been successfully completed in removing all the amazon stuff and making it a normal android tablet?
If so, is there a general feeling around here that this will be possible in the future with 5.60?
What steps should I take now to block future updates in hopes of making this a normal tablet?
The older Kindle HD (from 2012) can do this, as they've managed to run custom recovery on it. A custom recovery (TWRP or similar) is the first step to being able to actually replace the OS, and as far as I know only the older HD model had that available. Without it, you're stuck with Fire OS for the foreseeable future.
My old 2012 KFHD ran Android 6 Marshmallow for nearly the last 2 years until the charging port starting going haywire, and in an attempt to repair it I accidentally bricked it.
I was going to get another one to replace it, but decided to spend a little more on a more recent edition, the last generation (2016) HD 8. Why? Because as much as I like stock Android, I actually lost access to high definition content in Netflix and Amazon Video streaming services, since it was no longer recognized as a certified device for that. Uncertified devices only get access to lower resolution video, which begs the question- why have an HD tablet for low res video?
Turns out I use my laptop more for work, and this is just a reading/video/casual gaming device for me. The new version is a little faster and has more RAM, and those things work fine if not better in the original Fire OS, so I'm OK with that.
I came here actually wondering if any progress had been made in custom roms/recoveries for the HD8, but this thread confirms what I already figured. If you want a Kindle that you can remove and replace the OS, you need to go back some generations and get an older one.
