Contacts storage draining battery and heating up phone - Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC Questions & Answers

Hi. So ever since i got the poco x3, my phone has been feeling uncomfortably hot. Its warm to the touch when unused and uncomfortably HOT with light tasks.
Upon delving deeper saw that the Google Contacts Storage process (part of Android Core Apps) is taking most of the battery. Thus resulting in heating up and getting an SOT of less than 5 hours. I have about 9000 contacts in my google accounts (7000 + 2000 in seperate accounts).
Ive tried everything and am unable to solve the issue.
1) Tried clearing cache and data and re synced all my contacts. Didnt solve.
2) Tried using a third party dialer and contacts app. Didnt solve.
3) Tried dividing those 7000 contacts in 3 seperate accounts. Didnt solve.
4) I have tried to remove all battery optimizations from the contact sync processes and phone processes. Didnt resolve.
5) Factory reseting from recovery. Didnt solve.
Ive been using the OnePlus 6 for 2 years before this and Relame 6 for a few months before this and never faced this issue despite having so many contacts.
Im running 12.0.3. Global Rom.
What can I possibly do to resolve this? getting rid of those contacts is not an option.
Also, secondly, my Google Backup is broken. No matter what I do its stuck at waiting to backup. I used adb to trigger it and it does back up but only once. Next day it gets stuck again. Any ideas for that?

I used ADB to make the google drive backup available and after a restart this option became permanent available to me in settings. I did it about 1 week ago and I just check it out and is still available.

Hi. Thanks for the response. My main issue is actually the heating+battery drain. Im traveling this week and it is going to be a pain! I can live with manually backing up. Do you have any suggestions for the heating? Seems like call log backup/restore is also consuming battery since I've force stopped contact and phone app and started using another thrid party dialer app.

hm, seems to me that this is miui12 issue, since your older phones didn't have that and it was working... I'm wildly guessing here, but you could try two things:
1. disable synchronization - it's possible that miui12 is trying to sync that many contacts and for whatever reason its cpu/resource consuming, or failing silently and trying again, and again...
2. disable miui12 optimizations in developer menu
and see if any of this help... don't forget to reboot your phone after any change you made and let it settle for a while...

Hi. I've tried both these options. Disabling sync results in the call log/backup eating up that share of battery.
Miui optimizations are off for all contact and phone related apps. First thing i did. ?

ok, but i mean disable miui12 optimizations globally (there is one switch for it in developer settings) not only for certain apps... Did you by any chance disabled or uninstalled some bloatware from Xiaomi? Probably not, but uninstalling some part of system apps could also be responsible for this behavior...
Or you can unlock your bootloader and flash some pure Android ROM and see if that helps... I was only able to cope with MIUI12 for two weeks and that was it for me... I am now on NitrogenOS and couldn't be happier... no more Miui schizophrenia for me, thank you very much...

Not really. I'm using a xiaomi.eu ROM and no heating and battery drain issues....if you have unlocked bootloader, you can give it a try.

Waiting for the bootloader to be unlocked. Applied for it. Is the Nitrogen OS stable? My custom rom experimenting days got over ever since I shifted to OOS. Would like to stick with one fully working stable rom.

well, it's still beta, but I can't tell bad word about it, if you go for NitrogenOS, you'll get responsive and fast dev, who's get things done faster that you can think of, excellent battery life, stable (I didn't have single random reboot), for me everything just works, and what is not is fixed within 24-48 hours, I am also talking about A10, since dev is currently working on A11 (it's flashable, but considered alpha)... also NitrogenOS is only custom ROM where you can choose which gapps you need to be flashed, all other ROMs have preinstalled gapps, but if you prefer that ... test this or that, only you can tell if it fits to your needs...

Last time I had such an issue, one or two of my contacts had characters in one of the fields Google very much didn't like, so could be a good way to check that as well.

Alot of my contacts may have weird characters. But they worked fine in the last two phones.

GMail excessive battery drain

Posting this for a friend. He bought a Nexus 5 recently and his complaint about battery life was related to the Gmail app. He says he used Gmail for no more than 15 mins.
As you can see from the screenshots, something is wrong... GMail never uses so much battery from my experience. Any help?

I guess nobody has experienced this before? Gmail app draining ridiculous amounts of battery?
I'm guessing not, I for one don't even have Gmail in the list of apps contributing anything and I have 2 accounts in sync so something must be keeping it awake. Perhaps it's syncing up years worth of email?
EDIT: It's keeping the phone awake for 2.5 hours so it has to be stuck syncing something

Hmm , but is it possible for Gmail to get stuck over syncing? Never seen it happen before. He even factory reset his phone, but the issue persists

Why should they? They're experiencing non-standard behaviour from the app so they need to get to the root of the issue, not just install another app to act as a placebo.
To the OP - I'd personally factory reset the phone and set it up again and see if it's the same thing. But that's just me

Uh , I did mention that he factory reset in a previous post. It didn't fix the issue. He did mention that prior to factory reset , he had around 3 Gmail accounts being synced. After the reset , he only linked one. Battery is still draining but not as fast as before , but it's still an issue - 100% to 63% in 3 hours
It has to be something in his specific Gmail account that's causing it to stay awake cause it's not normal behaviour at all and the fact no one else has seen this issue would indicate a localised issue
This just happened to me too

Did you ever figure this out? It just happened to me too.
Usually the battery in my Note 2 SPH-900 lasts all day, but lately it's been draining faster than normal. Today, just after 2:00, it beeped because the battery is about to die, even though I've hardly even touched my phone all day. I checked the battery info page and it said Gmail battery use was 60%!

I still say it's bad coding. Why doesn't the syncing process have a time out? And a notification when there is an issue?
Toggle sync off and back on again. You might also try wiping Gmail data. The kill the app or reboot.
hi!
did anyone fix that problem? my nexus 4 has the same problem..
hi
HI There,
Me ( Nexus 5 ) and my wife ( nexus 4 ) have the same issues with the battery. Gmail is draining enormously
Is there a solution jet?

Clear data
I've had this happen on two phones (Nexus 5 & 6). It seems to relate to some bad sync going out of control. Turning synchronization off and on did not solve the problem. The only solution I found was to clear data for the Gmail app. This did make me have to readmit my non-Gmail accounts, but it was worth it. In fact, I have stopped using Gmail and have switched to Blue Mail exclusively just in case.
I've had the same problem with the gmail app on a galaxy s4 mini (CM 12.1). The phone got really hot and the battery was empty in a few hours.
The only (permanent) solution was to delete all accounts (I was using IMAP) and add them again as POP accounts.

[Q] android.process.acore has stopped, on ALL lollipop roms, after complete wipe!

Okay, guys, here's the problem. I have been pulling my hair out for days over this. On any Lollipop ROM I install, no matter what combination of gapps and AOSP ROM I install on my OPO, after completely and totally formatting caches, system, data, and /data/media, the problem persists:
Always after logging into an account, but not always the same one, I start to get an error "android.process.acore has stopped." It happens every few seconds and renders the device unusable. I have tried every fix I could find online, including wiping contacts storage data, contacts data, etc. I have formatted my phone several times, and each time the problem comes back. It only stops when I disable Contacts Storage in settings, which then in turn disables all contacts functionality.
This is getting totally ridiculous, and the only thing I can think of is that the AOSP version of contactsprovider.apk is totally corrupt. Any ideas?
I have the same problem... Did you succeed in resolving it?

Somewhat. The issue manifests itself when Facebook is synced with your contacts, and you use Facebook OAuth to sign into another app. For whatever reason, this causes the contacts app to go nuts, and the only way to fix it once it happens is to get rid of the Facebook app. It's a bug that is quite beyond me to fix. There is a modded Facebook apk floating around somewhere, that has had permissions modded so it's not allowed to use your contacts or register as an account in your phone. That works. It also works if when you install a new ROM, you sign into any apps that use your Facebook login before you install the Facebook app, that way you log into them with the browser and they never talk to the contacts app. Once you have installed the Facebook app, DO NOT EVER click "Sign in with Facebook" in any app on your phone, or you're screwed again.
That's pretty much what I've come up with thus far. Hope that helps.
EDIT: Here's the link to the thread with the modded Facebook apk: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2333637
I have the same issue on all CM12 based roms. It seems to happen for users with many contacts (hundreds). Uninstalling facebook seems to fix the problem for me. I have no such problems on my Nexus 5 with the same setup and facebook installed, so I wonder if it's not something specific to the bacon CM12 code.

Thanks for your partial solution @jkotzker... For me it's a no go because I am a big facebook user and I can install app with Facebook account linked at anytime... It's really really annoying to not log with Facebook account if the Facebook app is installed I don't know what to do... I tried everything like you.
I've recently been getting the same issue but mine says "unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped" everything was fine had this phone for about a month was on a lollipop ROM and that just randomly popped up. At first I thought it was the ROM so I switch to another lollipop ROM and got the same issue. So I went back to the latest ota kk ROM and til now I'm still getting the pop up. What's going on here? Please help

Oh yeah I've been trying to figure this out since cm12 unofficially came out for the note 4. Like all of you said it's fine for a while or sometimes it's messed up right away. I've had it work for two or three days then out of nowhere just have the error pop-up and never go away. Disabling google contacts storage also got rid of the error for me but of course I can't have the phone without google contacts and sync. This last time it happened just by downloading and signing into Dropbox, which isn't related to Facebook at all. This is belong frustrating because nobody seems to have a fix and it's the only thing stopping me from using cm 12. Is there any Dev that can help or work on this with a logcat?

I didn't find one...
I talked about this problem in xda temasek rom thread and ak kernel thread without success. I even sent a message on official cyanogenmod website, with last crash and logcat attached. No success. The problem happened in 2012 too... And since then, Google didn't have a solution for it.
It seems that Google is finally aware about this problem and the correction could arrive in "a future version"... Well. I want it now... Indeed, there seems to be only to increase the buffer transaction between applications and contact storage from 1MB to 2MB for example, to have it corrected. But no dev wants to do it because the problem cannot be reproduced! And it's rare! But we have it! It's incredible to have it back after a full wipe... And happening randomly, just after a random sync between application and Android system...
Any more updates on this issue/ anything else we can do to get this resolved? Even my partial, temporary solutions have stopped working, and I am getting really frustrated.
Glad to see I'm not the only one here with this issue. Took different search terms to eventually land me here since this such an old and somewhat common issue. Nonetheless... Same problem. OnePlus One running Temasek CM12. Disabling contacts storage.... Blah blah blah. Its rather disappointing there's no actual solution instead of a workaround. But, I'm finally happy to know its Facebook. An app I rarely use but do need unfortunately.
Edit: wondering if anyone has had any luck fastboot flashing the factory image? I know it's a pain in the ass to have to back up all your files, etc off the device so I'd like to know if anyone has had success or even tried this. Cuz, I really won't feel satisfied until I've resorted to this last measure if there's the possibility of eradicating the problem.

I initially had this problem when I switched to lollipop, not sure how it fixed itself but I'm guessing it's the contacts sync like you posted here; only the first time I accidentally synced Fb contacts, and due to the massive number of friends on it, it crashed. But you can disable any sort of sync services on Fb and continue using the app for everything else, I've had no issues since.
Do you mean luck with fixing this issue after flashing the factory image or only returning to stock? Because I've had no issues returning to stock from lollipop by flashing the factory images through fastboot.

I meant with flashing the factory image via fastboot to stop the frustratingly obnoxious pop ups of the process stopping (w/o uninstalling FB). You answered my question.
So, get this... Resolved the error by uninstalling Facebook. Today I picked up a Moto 360 and you HAVE to install Motorola Connect to really personalize the device... Once I allowed it to see my Google+ account info the android.process.acore started again. I'm SO annoyed. Gonna try a factory reset again and see if that helps. The only way to stop it is to uninstall Motorola Connect and that really sucks cuz I want to (of course) mess with my watch. I know nothing of Android Wear yet or how to root, etc the 360 so.... Here I go. Boldly. Lol
I'm just curious why I haven't seen more people having this issue. It's been plaguing me now for almost 2 weeks. I'm ready to throw my Bamboo OPO out the effing window. WTF.

It's mostly not because of lollipop, but might be the app itself, I read a few others having this problem on other forums with HTC, the solution they found was to clear data on contacts storage. Give that a try and see if it works, if not I'd suggest going back to Stock or probably the new OxygenOS which is supposed to be out by now. Check out @timmaaa index thread in the general section, it has all the necessary stock images you need. Report back and let us know if it fixed the issue for you

Yea, I tried clearing contacts storage numerous times to no avail. I can live without the app... At first I thought it was a requirement to change watch faces... But, I do have a backup of stock, rooted but I can't go back to KK after being so used to LP. I'm def going to jump on Oxygen just to try it out but I'm guessing I'll end up running stock CM12s. I can't wait. I'd much rather have a stock (w/root of course) or mostly stock device that actually works completely.

The bug has been corrected by Google themselves with Android 5.1. Finally!.. So, like me, just try omni 5.1 or last cm12.1 unofficial and the error has gone! So good to use my phone.... Hmmm... How to say... Normally... Lol.

Very nice. Glad to hear this... Xposed isn't compatible with 5.1 yet, right?
Two things to try…
Go into settings/apps , press the menu button and select "reset app preferences". Reboot
You Can also try entering the following in your commands:
Su (enter)
Killall rild (enter)
reboot
Should have read the entire post, glad that has been fixed by google, I experienced the same thing and it's a huge pain in the butt.

No. Not yet. But. Well. CM12 is already good functionality wise. And with this bug disappeared it's really a happiness.

Neither worked but thanks for the suggestion. I did find a Facebook work around. Found the Lite Version via a Google search (since its technically not available in the US) , installed it and it works fine. No android.process.acore FC's or repeated pop ups.
Update: This problem reared its ugly head again on CM12 and I ended up having to uninstall Twitter this time. So, now I'm on CM12s and as soon as I logged into my other Google account user Boxers email app I got the android.process.acore crash again. Uninstalling that app immediately stopped it. God I can't wait for 12.1 for our OPOs. This problem is absolutely ridiculous. I can't take this anymore. I really can't use ANY social media apps unless its like Tinfoil for FB or Twitter. I don't have any connected accounts except Google & Cyanogen.. Which I truly can live without but... Just for the hell of it.... Knowing I have a backup and I'm about to clean flash the latest stock build I tried to add Waze and it caused the crash all over again. Uninstalling Waze didn't help. I shouldn't have to deal with this. Only way to stop it is to disable contacts storage. Once it begins it doesn't stop. Effing Google with their half baked crap.

Are random reboots a thing on z5?

There are a few people complaining of seemingly random reboots, myself included.
I have bell stock, unlocked, unrooted.
It started to happen at almost my second month mark with this device, while listening to Spotify or Tapatalk browsing or simply just idle, just noticing the bright startup screen all of a sudden. This reboot occurred once or twice daily.
I repaired the phone using the Sony pc companion, I also restored all of my settings and most of the apps.
No undesired reboot for almost 2 weeks, until moments ago, listening to google music thru Bluetooth (which I do most of the time anyways.)
I have kept a quite small number of apps while waiting to see what triggers the reboot, nothing you'd consider risky, I'd mention Nova launcher, aquamail and tasker. I haven't install yet greenify, lux, call recording app or the like.
What I did do lately (yesterday and the days before), I uninstalled or disabled some of the bloat, nothing of importance I think. Here's the complete list of disabled apps.

Honestly, not used to these reboots, while I've seen some in the past, they would be pretty rare, on rooted and custom roms.
Is this a common occurrence among the z5 folks? Any idea what triggers it? It looks like being soft related, but have no idea really, perhaps someone more knowledgeable attempts to address it?
Cheers!

Never happened to mine, although more than 200 apps installed. I would suggest do a factory reset using PC Companion...
Xperia Z5 E6653
Never had a reboot here.
Can you check in diagnostic if there is an app acting weird?
I might enable back all app and check if the reboot persist or remove tasker and try.
One more thing u can do ia trying ur phone in safe mode.

There was no application information in diagnostic pages, however it asked me to send app usage data to Sony which I did. I assume it might help when this happens next time.
I reenabled a few apps and will see what happens next.
My last factory reset happened precisely 9 days ago, according to same diagnostics. I have counted the user apps, 48 apps in total, I could remove maybe half of them without any remorse

No reboot on mine either if I'm honest.

no reboot here aswell...using it for 3 months now.
No undesired reboots also.
I see. I was under the impression that this was a more common occurrence. My bad.
Will probably attempt another factory reset if can't fix otherwise.
Until then, please ignore this thread.

I actually have had random reboots. I've also had moments where the screen refuses to wake up properly. It'll switch on but stay black. It hasn't happened in a long time, though.

I've had a few on my first unit.
Did the screen turn fuzzy like a snow storm on an old TV? (I don't know how to describe it, u know what I mean)
I got mine replaced because of faulty camera lens and display, now I haven't had one single reboot (other then the reboots I requested myself obviously)
I get some (when overheated or sometimes while switching from cellular to WiFi or WiFi to cellular).
Not to bad 90% of the time, though supper annoying when it happens while listening to music/podcasts.

I wouldn't mind a random reboot once in awhile. It is advised to reboot it yourself once a week anyway.
When it started to happen here it was kinda annoying, at least daily. It mostly occurred while listening to music via Spotify, but I also had it reboot while chatting in hangouts and once while talking to a bell agent..
So yeah, I'm trying to prevent the daily occurrence to happen and so far seems to have worked. After the steps I mentioned yesterday, no reboots so far and I went through pretty much everything I do with my phone.
Sent from my E6653 using Tapatalk
I saw my phone rebooting once when I put it in pocket, I do not think it caused by overheating. I thought maybe I accidentally hit power button.
But thing went strange when it did not recognize wifi. I found it lost every wifi password spots.
Every other apps still are fine (I do not any problem except wifi problem). My phone is E6653 with newest .200 firmware.
I think I just encounter once (but very serious), and I am not sure whether it reboots any more times when I do not know.
on z5 , random reboots are related to xposed. if you install xposed , you will get them

Not entirely true. Yes, this can happen but I haven't event unlocked my BL, let alone rooted and flashed Xposed; yet I've still have reboots.

I very much suspect the random reboots to be related to disabling one or several apps shipped with this device.
I am trying to see if it's easy to spot the first one that will cause the reboot by disabling one at a time and waiting for eventual reboot.
Probably isn't too worthwhile since next big update is around the corner and hopefully fixed by then, I was thinking if somebody else might join the search for the offending app? It can only help, I think, trying to reproduce the issue and signal it to sony devs, just in case they don't know about it yet.
So some means to investigate this are:
A) disable one app at a time, manual reboot for good measure and wait ~ 24 hrs; if reboot doesn't occur continue with disabling the next app
or B) disable a bunch of apps, see if the reboot occurs on your device.
We are only interested in those apps sony decided to be install in system account: Album, File Commander, Music, Privilege Plus, PS stuff, Video, What's new, Xperia Lounge, etc
If you can reproduce the issue, report back with the apps disabled and your firmware version. I will try to put together the results and see if we figure a pattern or simply send the data to sony.
rock on!
Try not disabling sony account manager and fb things.

"Device Health keeps stopping" message popping up?

Hi, I'm currently on the AT&T carrier on Oreo 8.0.0 ( G955USQU2CRC5, latest update ) and a random message pops up randomly saying that "Device Health has stopped" or "Device Health keeps stopping".
The only option is "Close app" and when I hit it, all it does is close the message for it to pop up again randomly.

Could this be part of the 8.0.0 update?
Every time I Google this message, the only thing I find is posts about S Health which I don't think this is.
I'd look through your apps under settings see if you find it select show system apps as well. Delete data if you find it. It's something I would've done.

That's the thing, nothing under apps, even with system apps enabled, shows under "Device Health." The closest thing I have to this is the one for Samsung health and I've already tried to clear cache, delete data, force stop, etc. It doesn't do anything.
I've tried resetting the phone, reflashing the phone, resetting app permissions, and making sure I don't download too many apps, but it always ends with the same result.
I'm starting to think this is an AT&T specific problem or something, so I might try reflashing some other version later.

Try this. Go to device maintenance under settings, then on the top right click what looks like a piece of paper you'll see apps that keeps crashing. Maybe you'll find it there click on it and it should take you to the app information. That is if AT&T phones have it

Samsung+ forum maybe they could help
I have the same issue, have had it about a month now since I got Oreo.
This past weekend I did a factory reset. The issue was gone for about 2 days, now today it's back. I looked in the updates app lists and nothing updated that looks like it would be causing this.
All I really know is this is annoying as hell. Some days I know I click that error off well over 100 times, probably over 200. Most times it pops up you hit it 6-8 times to clear it.
edit - S8 here - Also RC5 version

I have fixed my phone, but it's a bit extensive and maybe not worth it depending on what you do on your phone.
I tried to follow this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/how-to/snap-guide-flashing-standard-fw-carrier-t3627255
and used the unlocked firmware and so far, on Oreo, I haven't gotten that message.
I also don't have any bloatware from AT&T so that's also a plus.
Just a thought, though.

So, simply unlocking it and not having ATT apps did the trick?
What about Samsungs apps?
I've rooted in the past but haven't done so recently, I'll definitely look into this.
Thanks.

Samsung apps are installed and they work, just no carrier specific bloatware.
Also I believe that the phone is not actually unlocked, rather it only uses the unlocked firmware.
Just follow the "Carrier Switching" section with the XAA CSC code and then the "Flashing Unlocked Firmware" if you want to do what I did.
Did anyone find a solution for this? My ATT LG Phoenix II is doing the exact same thing and has been for the last couple weeks except it does it every 10 to 15 seconds so the phone is basically useless. I can find no Device Health application on the phone or even one that looks like it might be causing this.
Resolution to "Device Health Keeps Stopping"?
Did you find a resolution to this problem? If so, what action was taken?
Thank you

No. I didn't use it for a couple (few?) weeks and the next time I used the phone it still did it, but a LOT less often. The way it is now is just mildly annoying, not making the phone useless like it was. I assume there was an update that made it better but I really don't know what for sure.
Solution found?!
Good afternoon,
*
I believe I discovered a resolution to this issue. I work for a City Government as an IT Specialist in our Mobile Device Support Unit. I handle over 3000+ device for all City employees. We've come across this exact problem about 3 times since Oreo rollout. Our standard device for all employees is the Samsung Galaxy S7. We've attempted a bunch of different things, from wiping the device completely to flashing an older version (Android 6.0) on the device to no avail. Previously we found that once EVERY APP on the device was updated along with the Software, the issue was resolved. However, as of today, I was working on another one of these troubled devices. I updated E_V_E_R_Y_T_H_I_N_G and the pop-up still showed. So, I told the user I would just replace the entire device and Smart Switch his content to the new phone. While I was in the transfer process (already switched the SIM) I noticed the troubled device didn't receive a single pop-up. This got me thinking, so I waited and tested the device some more without the SIM and didn't receive a single pop-up. This led me to believe the issue is likely correlated to Service. I had read on other websites that generally this issue is related to AT&T Samsung devices. Some solutions were to flash a vanilla OS (without bloatware) to cease the annoyance.
*
After reinserting the SIM into the problem phone, I almost immediately received the pop-up.
*
SO! I went diving.
*
I came across a strange setting I hadn't considered / seen / wasted my time to read. It was to turn on and off AT&T Mobile Network Diagnostics. GREAT! If I have this "Device Health" issue and it seems to be tied to a data connection, this setting makes sense! If there is some error with the sending of diagnostics to AT&T then it would only make sense to receive this type of error. What even IS "Device Health?" So once I turned that off and reset the APN I haven't received the pop-up since.
*
I am sure by this point my post is
*
TL;DR
*
Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > and turn OFF "AT&T Mobile network diagnostics"
*
Go to Access Point Names > (3 vertical dots top right corner) > Reset to default
*
Since doing that i haven't seen the pop-up.*
*
Cheers
*

Did everything except, there's no "AT&T Mobile network diagnostics" to shut off.
Still have the same problem.

Major Android 11 memory issues

Ever since my Galaxy S10e (AT&T) upgraded to Android 11 last week, I have been having major memory problems. If I switch from one app to another and then go back to the first, it has often been killed. When running some apps, my persistent notifications start disappearing and apps that I have running in the background are getting killed. I often find apps that would always be running in the background are now restarting when I switch to them. I use a Video Compressor app and it ran fine with very rare exceptions in Android 10 but now as soon as I start processing a video, my notifications disappear and if the screen goes off, the app starts processing again at the beginning of the video when I turn the screen back on. With Android 10, I could use several apps and the Video Compressor would work in the background. I have battery optimizations turned off for the relevant apps to the best of my knowledge.
Has anyone else experienced these issues? At this point, I seriously regret upgrading to Android 11.
I'm not sure if EVERY issue I have had with a Samsung phone is completely unique to me or I am just using the wrong forum. The silence always seems to be deafening on threads I start on XDA.
Scope storage sucks.
Try a factory reset and see if this helps. It's time too.
You could have it reflashed to the previous version at a Samsung Experience Store if you can't resolve the issues.
After which disable AT&T updates completely. AT&T advance tech support can also turn it off on their end if you beat them over their heads a bit.
My 10+ is still running fast and stable on Pie... purposely.

Thanks for the advise. Samsung phones are infamous for killing background apps due to battery optimizations, but now my background apps seem to be getting killed due to memory issues.

I disabled all battery optimization and used package disabling, firewall blocking, settings and occasionally clearing certain Google apk data to bring battery life into line.
Scope storage can use more memory but not that much.
Go to Developer options>running services/cache and see what dragging the memory down.
Did you do any system app updates after OTA?
That could be it.
I run the factory load for many of the Google apps. They run better.
AR Core was a horrible resource hog, I disabled it.

I don't have great battery life, but I use my phone heavily and sometimes use intensive apps, so I'm not complaining about that. I have pretty much all battery optimizations turned off (I'm actually currently helping Don'tKillMyApp correct their S10 info, which I never found correct).
The top 5 memory users on my phone are all system processes. I have disabled a number of apps. I have five different AR apps disabled, but I don't see AR Core on my phone. I noticed that One UI Home was in the top 5 at around 450 MB. I disabled that yesterday, since I don't use it (I use Nova) and spent some time trying to figure out why my recent apps button was no longer working. It is ridiculous I need to use 450 MB of memory just to use the recent apps button.
My cached apps don't seem to be using too much memory. I'm sure I have more apps than I need running in the background (Blokada, Bitwarden, a couple battery monitors, a VPN at times and so on), but I didn't really have problems on Android 10. I haven't added any more since upgrading to 11, but I seem to be having serious memory issue. This morning I had the VPN on and was downloading in the background in a browser and I switched to something else minor and when I switched back, the browser had stopped and the VPN stopped, killing my download and VPN connection, so it's seriously impacting the usability of my phone.
When you say you are running the factory load of Google apps, do you mean you have never upgraded them, or have uninstalled updates? I have never really paid attention to those upgrades and have just allowed them.
I seem to regularly see about 84% usage in developer options > memory. Unfortunately, I didn't record what these memory and cache numbers were when I was on 10. 84% sounds high to me, what is anyone else's phone averaging?
I think I definitely need to contact Samsung regarding this issue.

I'm running on Pie so no idea how ARCore is being implemented now or if it's an issue.
On my 10+ Nova uses a lot battery and resources than One UI which is faster as well.
Factory load are the original apks with no updates. Many times updates help but not always.
My ram usage profile is similar to yours.
I have about 86 packages disabled.
Google Backup Transport and Framework can run even when disabled presumably due to dependencies. Periodically clearing there data, Google Play Services and the apk logs helps on this device.
Manual sync only except text, and Google Play Services is Firewall blocked except when needed.
All carrier, Samsung and Google feedback is turned off. Android Services is firewall block as it's not needed. Playstore is disabled and firewall blocked except when needed.
It been an evolving process... one reason I'm not eager to update to Q and start from scratch with this again. Pie is fast, stable and does everything I want it to. To date none of it vulnerabilities have been an issue; a forced reload is far easier than the upgrade

Thanks for the reply and screenshot! Noticeably, the system on your phone uses more memory but you also have more memory to start with than my S10e does.
The only possibly memory-related issue I had on 10 that bothered me was a period of time when my recent apps menu was often getting cleared out, even of the locked apps. Both Samsung and AT&T told me I would need to do a system reset, which I didn't want to do, or take it into a store for a repair. For some reason, this issue seemed to have gone away before the Android 11 upgrade on its own.
I am going to try disabling or uninstalling apps that are running in the background that I don't really need and I'll try some of your suggestions such as disabling auto-sync. I really don't believe I should have to do this though since I wasn't having issues like this on Android 10 and the phone should be new enough to handle the upgrade without such issues, so I will contact Samsung to see what they say.
As I said, I am generally a fan of upgrades, but I really can't think of anything I have seen better about Android 11. Even the better control over app permissions doesn't seem as good as it was described. There are SERIOUS issues with some apps using the SD Card. At this point, I certainly wouldn't have upgraded if I had known this, and for me, that is saying a lot.

Generally I close out apps after I'm done with them as some like Brave continue to run in the background sucking down the battery.
Migrating from Pie you lose a lot of valuable tools in the name of Google's big sister approach to security. Lol, Google is the biggest security risk on the phone.
Do the factory reset. After a firmware update it's best practice. For once the do a factory reload advice from the techs was sound
If you have an SD card use it as a data drive. The internal drive is for loaded apps, downloads (until vetted) and such.
Store all critical data there, files, music, vids, including copies of your apps (ApkExport) so you can do a full reload with little or no internet or your PC. Make a copy of the SD card data to your PC and 2 hdds that are electronically and physically isolated from the PC. Back these up as needed.
I can do a full reload in about 2 hours. 2 forced back to back reloads made me streamline the process. A forced reload doesn't happen often but can happen at any time. A SD card used as a data drive adds another level of redundancy and perhaps data security.

Thanks for the info, I will consider the factory reset if I can't make any progress on this issue. I chatted with Samsung today and they told me to wipe the cache in recovery, which seemed like a valid suggestion to me, so I will see if that makes any difference

Just do the factory reset rather than chase ghosts. Nothing like a clean, fresh load... then you can see if there really are issues that need resolved. Hopefully only minor ones.

In all honesty, though you make it sound like nothing, I am very afraid of loosing things if I factory reset. I spend a lot of time personalizing my phone just as I want it and even if I can reload my apps, I worry about the time it will take to get my battery widget color just as I want it . Not everything allows exporting the settings.
It would have been less of an issue on my rooted Galaxy S4 with Titanium Backup (which I still have as a backup), but my S10e isn't rooted. I use Alpha Backup Pro to backup apps sometimes, but after the upgrade to Android 11, it is no longer able to save external data, another disadvantage to the so-called upgrade.
If I was to factory reset my phone, what would I do then about upgrades. Can I decline the Android 11 upgrade but still accept the periodic security updates?
So far, things seem somewhat better after wiping the cache, but I don't believe the issue is resolved.

Well designed apps that are hard to set up should allow the settings to be easily saved. Maybe some settings can be saved with Smart Switch.
Start now; streamline your reload strategy so it's easy, fast, redundant and loses no critical data.
It's a learning process that you need to put some thought into. All critical data should already be on the data drive.
Androids when they crash do it with little warning most times. Always being ready to reload makes it only a minor inconvenience.
As for 10/11 I have no useful workaround info as it doesn't concern me.
I've been running obsolete, unpatched OS's including Android for over a decade with very little trouble.
Far less trouble than upgrading to a "secure" system would cause.
No forced reloads from viruses starting with XPx64/Kitkat4. The one thing I watch like a hawk are email and downloads. Email stays in the cloud unless a download is absolutely required.
Pie continues to provide a fast, stable platform that does everything I need. No replacement needed as long as I'm using this device.
I block all updates.
If you should is up to you...
Everything related to my device is redundantly protected so if I do get hacked the most it will cost me is some time. If I suspect a device compromised (including erratic behavior) it gets reloaded.
I'm a bit ruthless about that; all OS's are expendable, data is not.
Whenever I set up a machine I assume it's will need reloaded sooner than latter. Everytime I've drifted from that premise it's been unpleasant.
Two back to back reloads on the 10+ impressed me enough to nail down my reload strategy.
2 hours instead of almost 2 days; shortcuts and fine tuning take another few hours. Whatever

Thanks for all the info. I have never had a phone crash, but I should know better considering the issues I have had with computers and a PS3.

Android is a remarkably stable platform normally.

It has recently come to my attention that performing a factory reset, like you were suggesting, will not downgrade the system version (in this case 11 to 10), just reset the phone to a like-new state WITH the existing system version. I'm unsure if you were just suggesting a factory reset to 'clean up' Android 11, but I believed otherwise at the time. So I guess my only downgrade options would be reflashing to the previous version at a Samsung Experience Store, as you also suggested, or going the root route.

Exactly. When you don't do a factory reset after a major firmware update it tends to run poorly.
You're stuck on whatever was flashed to the device though, good or bad.
You need to reflash the old version if you want that unfortunately.
One reason myself and many others rarely upgrade an OS if we like it, it's running fast, stable and is fulfilling its mission.
