I was following the live blog today on the new Razrs, as I was with Verizon and wanted one when they came out, but moved to ATT and got the Skyrocket instead. Which I have not to this day regretted, as it is the most complete package in a phone I have owned. So much so that i have felt little desire to upgrade to anything new, including the GS3. Especially including the GS3, which seems to follow this new trend of incremental design and feature upgrades.
I've been waiting for some entirely new feature to catch my attention, as NFC and SAMOLED and actually usable cameras did before. The edge to edge rumors really piqued my interest, as I have recently been struggling to understand the need for the top and bottom bezels to be so large, especially since ICS and up has on screen navigation keys which are, to me, exactly the kind of intuitive and unique feature Android should be shooting to incorporate across the range.
Anyhow... the Razr M's Edge to Edge screen is not impressing me. I compared bezels and it appears only slightly smaller than our skyrocket's bezels, not to mention still having that pointless bezel up top and bottom. Any opinions?
On a side note that new iPhone screen looks rediculous. Let's copy Android's 16:9 ratio but leave the gigantic bezels that Android doesn't even exaggerate that much anymore. Or Since 2011.

No side-bezel is stupid because everytime you pick up your phone you'll be tapping something. Also, top/bottom bezel is important.. not useless. There's a camera, microphone, speaker, and light sensors there.
Edge to edge screen......very interesting, only thing is the top and bottom bezel is required for proximity sensor and other sensors as well as camera. The onscreen capacitive buttons doesn't sound that bad but I like them off the screen. Just personal preference.

Well, it is really not "edge to edge":

Well then if I continue to see this crap about "reported" it will be considered as trolling, breaking the rules!, so just report (if you really do report at all) and wait for us to action. Thread locked as this topic has nothing to do with Sky Rocket.
Greetings! I am simply wondering if this tablet provides a decent drawing experience when compared to, say, the Galaxy Note line of products. I owned a Galaxy Note 8.0 which was wonderful, but after an unfortunate mishap, it's been rendered useless. I've been waiting for a tablet that is somewhat small, has an included stylus, and is very powerful (Stock Android is certainly another plus!). This seems to be the only device that fits the bill. I just want to know if actually feels like a pencil on paper from (hopefully) unbiased owners. I mainly intend to use ArtFlow and LayerPaint HD.
So nice to hear that there are people noticing that feature of the shield Tablet. So generally after some trys with different apps, Imo it works pretty well. But it can't be compared to an device with an active digitiser.
So you have your main focus on drawing. I would say you can have the same results as with an Spen for example. But you have to learn how to use the Direct Stylus.
In many reviews and threats & posts you will read about pressure sensitivity.
That not the truth. Direct stylus recognise the size of the tip touching the surface. There are two ways to achieve a bigger surface with this kind of stylus :
1. Press real hard on the display
That would be the normal "use" of an pen and an stylus with digitiser.
That is the reason you will read about flimsy tips of the stylus.
2. Twist the stylus while Drawing
When you take a look at the Tip of the stylus you can imagine, how the developers intend to use this kind of stylus .
For example when you want a decent line with a fine start, getting bigger till the end you have to start with the small tip and turn the stylus to a bigger spot.
l know it sounds unfamiliar, specially, when you are used to the Spen of Samsung, but after some tries it works quiet well.
As Nvidias CEO said during presentation , it depends on your personal skill..
Another important thing is the palm recognition.
It works most the time but it uses the same technique as pressure sensitivity. So it sometimes happen that when you lift or move your palm, You are giving an input. The best workaround is to activate the "stylus only mode " in the Menubar.
The annoying thing is, that you can't use pinch to Zoom or your Finger to move your workingsheet.
Hope I could give you a little clou on using the Direct Stylus on the shield Tablet.
If you got some more questions feel free to ask or pm me

I use artflow on SHIELD and its ok. I love the stylus and it feels nice to draw with. Not sure if its the tablets senors or ArtFlow but sometimes it isnt accurate, where you think you're touching isn't what the tablet detects. I've only noticed this really with ArtFlow, Dabbler seems to be more accurate so I'm assuming its just the app itself. ArtFlow has rolled out updates for the Tegra k1 since I've downloaded it, so hopefully it gets better. I havn't tried Layer Paint yet.

Pinch Zoom works fine for me in Stylus only mode for ArtFlow. It is a tad buggy, sometimes instead of zooming/moving it acts as an eraser...which is odd. But the undo button fixes it. Its not perfect but it works for me.
Thank you so much guys! Could either of you test a pencil on the display? It works with the Tegra NOTE 7 and some other devices like the Galaxy S4/ S5. Make sure it's dull so you don't destroy your screen if you do try it.
What about small curls?
Hi, stylus lovers!
I have a question to owners of Shield Tablet.
Some time ago I've tested my colleague's Tegra Note 7 tablet (EVGA branded).
That tablet has Direct Stylus too. And it's stylus "engine" has an distressing flaw: it "eats" small curles. For example if I'm writing small handwritten letter "b" (the upper oval first and then the lower oval) the upper oval will be drawn in very reduced size, almost to dot. But the lower oval will be almost normal. It applies other letters with upper curls like handwritten "f", "h", "k" and "l" too.
(I hope, my explanation and my English is not very ugly.)
So, the question is how Shield Tablet's stylus behave in such situation? Can you just write some handwritten phrase in any drawing app and check out if small curles of letters were "eaten"?
Thanks!
That's a thing I noticed too. But I think I can explain a little bit about that.
First of all, what you experienced there is also to see when you are writing with for example an Spen. You just really have to take a close look.
To make the input look cleaner the software kind of renders the detected input and round it up to make it look more fluid.
The picture I posted is out of the App "Write ". There you have a setting where you can choose how much the input gets rounded.
l turned up the setting from No 1 to No 5. The movement on the screen was the same in every line.
So you can see how much influence an App setting can make .
So you can't say yes or no to your question. For me the standard Android handwriting recognition makes a really good job in terms of showing what's been written on the Display without the chicken influence
OneNote is imo an negative example for that.

Thank for quick reply!
I fully understand that moment. I've spent a lot of time with S-Pen (Note 8 and Note 10.1 2014) and Tegra Note 7 too.
And I can state: S-Pen is more laggy but it don't eats small curls as Tegra Note 7 stylus does.
I played with several drawing apps on Tegra Note 7 and all of them behaves similarly in curl eating.
There is one stylus sensivity setup option in Tegra Note 7 and it doesn't give any good effect for my interest.
I've forgot to say clearly: my interest is not in handwriting recognition. I just want to have precise drawing and handwriting.
So, the question is: does Direct Stylus in Shield Tablet eat curls less than in Tegra Note 7?
Obviously my question sounds whimsy. But I can't do anything with it. I want precise stylus.
No you don't. I really can understand you. Had the same headache.
On shield tablet l can't find a setting like you mentioned.
I really would like to post some examples but the App won't let me do this for you. So I would say order it and try it on your own. Maybe you find a shop with an good return policy?
I can make thinks look like been eaten up but with the same app l can write the best texts. There it really depends on the kind of pencil & brush and thickness you choose ...
Really sorry mate

So the stylus in the shield isn't active? It's just like any other capacitive stylus that emulates a finger, maybe a bit better?

It's way way better.
Due to some Tegra's digitizing magic the Direct Stylus 2 performs like an active stylus. The most valuable advantage of Direct Stylus 2 over other capasitive stylus digitizers is very high sensivity and selectivity.
Here is good video on it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaRT0E-RTPQ
And here is a video on older Tegra Note 7 (with an older Direct Stylus digitizer) digitizer comparison with S-Pen digitizer on Galaxy Note 8 and capasitive sensor of Nexus 7:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtZz4PjcAUk
@Kirrrr Thanks for the videos. It seems to me like they optimized the ability for the touchscreen digititzer to pick up the size of a touch. The soft tip of the pen changes its size depending on the way you hold it and the pressure. Reporting of touch size is actually build in to android. I tested it and different fingers report different sizes. My pinky 1 - 2, forefinger 2 - 4 and thumb 3 - 5. I think that lots of drawing apps don't take advantage of this because the variance is so small when using the same finger. It seems like they where using a customized version of sketchbook that actually takes the touch size into account. I doubt the tip is going to last long and it didn't look like the tip is replacable. Software wise what they did is impressive, but I think I'm going to skip this tablet.
Some people already have their devices so I wanted to know about the build quality and any problems with it.
I'm interested in the screen quality, especially any issues like the red/pink tint that affected many HTC 10 panels last year. Hopefully HTC has improved in this area.
Another issue with the HTC 10 (at least the units I tried) was a very loud vibration motor which made haptic feedback pretty annoying in quiet places (library, office, etc.), is this happening with the new phone?

I've no issues and very happy so far (day 3).
Quality is superb just like my HTC 10.
The screen has no noticeable tints and the quality is great. The screen is brighter than the HTC 10 and photos and video are fantastic when viewed on it. Viewing outside is better than the HTC 10, and the screen can be viewed in portrait with polarised sunglasses (unlike many phones and the HTC 10.
The haptic feedback on my HTC 10 is a little too strong for sure, but this U11 is less obtrusive and I think about right.
All in all, it's a good upgrade from the HTC 10, has great build quality, and I think it's great - very happy.
PhoneArena review mentioned a build issue, but it might only affect pre-production devices:
"On the two U11 handsets we examined during this review, each had one edge where the phone's back glass met the metal frame and there was a pronounced sharpness to the transition – while the other side was perfectly smooth. But with each phone we looked at, this sharp edge was on a different side – just not very consistent. "
Please tell us there won't be any of the dreaded yellow tinted screens?! It took me 3 HTC 10's to finally get a good one.
my one is same as M10 last year
red tint screen since the auto brightness is below around 60%
Thanks for the input guys, I just ordered my U1 1 and will comment on the build quality when I get it.
Very few reviews and owners seem to be mentioning tint issues so apparently this is not as much of a problem as last year.
I think it has some build issues (gaps between the frame and the glass) more than a tint issue.

That's good but I was asking for people that may have build issues. Mine is on its way back to HTC.
Every phone I've had (all HTC) have all had loud vibrators come the 12 month mark.
What I do find bothersome though is when starting up the camera it skips and shudders so bad it's unusable. I'm on my 2nd device (first one literally all of a sudden had an entire screen length crack under the glass) and both have had the same issue. Really hoping HTC fixes soon.

Mine is the 6 GB RAM version and I've issues with the screen. Near the bottom border there's an abnormal pixel (it changes according to the color but is bigger than the rest) and there're some shadows at bottom border from left to right, similar to light bleeding issue. Thankfully both defects are at bottom and they're no so visible but it still bothers me. I can return the device to Hong Kong in order to receive a new one but what happen if defective pixel is at the center of the screen? It can be worst.

It's like the video. Take a look at the left bottom part of the phone. There are some shadows, the light is not uniform. Look at this carefully as the problem appears only few seconds.
Anyway the store acceded to give me a 10% discount for the flaw as sending back from Chile to Hong Kong is a PITA.
Apart of screen issues the phone totally worth the upgrade in comparison with HTC 10. It's better than S8+ too. I returned an S8 because it was restarting randomly. I should say that S8 screen, at least my unit had a pinkish tone at bottom and superior border and also at both edges. It wasn't a zero flaws screen too.

A power button that moves a little. I don't know....doesn't bother me, that's all. Not many power buttons are completely sturdy, unless they don't protrude as much.

Every U11 I've seen in reviews (and my own) has this problem, a white background is never uniform at the bottom of the screen, so it was wise not to ask for a replacement and accept the discount lol

Yes, apparently most if not all HTC U11 have this "light bleeding" issue. Anyway, I take the 10% discount due to the defective pixel I've and that the upper speaker is not as clear as HTC 10. It sounds good but it has a little background noise during calls (Skype, WhatsApp and normal calls). Even with those issue it's an excellent phone and the best from HTC so far. It's superior to S8+ in my opinion and I owned both devices.
For the screen issues please look at the pictures I'm attaching.

I like it. Idk why LG went with the curved glass, but it feels good. The useable screen actually stops where the curve begins. So the curve is just a black bezel. Maybe they're amping up for some sort of Sammy edge in the future? I hope not.

I visited Verizon store today and my first impression was pretty good! They only had the black version but it looked nice, better than the original pixel XL. However, there were two things I've noticed. First, the top and bottom bezels aren't symmetrical. Top bezel is definitely larger and it was pretty apparent when using the device. That's personal preference but I didn't like it. Second, are the scratches on the screen. I haven't heard many people mention it but the screen is actually slightly curved like on the Samsung devices but the glass also slopes down on the top and bottom. It's only been on display for a day first but it was already noticably scratched on the bottom bezel, on the "arch".
I went back to the store to take few pictures to illustrate what I'm talking about + curved screen

Another thing I forgot to mention is that display is much less vibrant than Note 8. Colors are washed out, especially reds. I will try to take few more pictures later today

I just want a device with reserve volume not one that I max out for a particular purpose and its not loud enough.
I did the 5X tweak to make both speakers play back and a volume boost flash that worked very well.
I want my Waze to at least get my attention while cruising to a good part of a song .
I like the app drawer is transparent instead of the bright white that the OG Pixel has. Wish the rest of the system followed suit (settings, contacts, msgs and such). Or at least had options.

Sorry. I was speaking of software, you guys are discussing hardware.
The screen colors looks like this for a more realistic presentation of color, this can be remedied with color mode like Ex kernel color option to add more saturation.
This phone is definitely not a looker. But gonna cover it up anyway and hopefully the bezels wont bother me.
I'm not sure really why it matters to a point. It's just going to be in a case anyway.

About That Display & Critics
This may be a good opportunity for Google to make a bold move by recalling as necessary all the units for the Pixel 2 XL and rebuild those displays quickly with full screen all around with no black nudges whatsoever surrounding the speakers or anything else like front camera and sensors on these screens as possible, therefore blending in the full display entirely, and achieving likely the thinnest bezels, to kick Apple iPhone X's behind big time!

No! That understandingly what is called a wild bold move, indeed. Google won't go bankrupt after that. To the contrary upon the outcome, their shares will culminate more than ever before. Thus with that 'WBM' potential success, they may just become dramatically the number one seed to beat in the smartphone market, after all.

Coming from a Pixel 2, and both phones in OtterBox Defenders are almost exact size, which is nice. One thing I don't like is the button placement. Pixel 2's buttons are in a perfect location. The S10e's are way too high on the phone in my opinion, at least to easily use one-handed.

The phones in the Defender case are almost identical, so no difference there. I prefer the Pixel 2 button placement, but not that big of a deal for me. The Pixels lack Band 14 and the new tech with WiFi and ATT's "5g" on the Samsung is really the ticket for me.

I really like the size of this phone, the thickness, height for me is perfect. Display size for me is perfect. I had the S9 before although very close to the same size it feels comfortable. in the hand.
Feels much better in my hand than my previous phone, the GS8+. That thing was a monster.
Something special about holding it once you wipe down all the finger oils, fingerprints and dust
Nice size, but buttons are placed oddly. I often end up taking an accidental screen shot when pressing volume-down with left thumb (finger inadvertently touches power-button).
I use bxActions to set the Bixby button to screen toggle on single-press, flashlight goggle on double-press.
The ergonomics are terrible.
Would be so much better if the power button/finger print sensor was on the top in the center, or if the finger print sensor was built into the bottom center of the screen. This way left- and right handed users could simply unlock the phone with their index finger.
And why not replace the volume rocker by vol up and vol down buttons on the top left, with the top right for camera and bixby buttons. This would open up the possibility to switch these buttons around, so lefties and righties could set their favorite button setup.
Oops! I shouldn't post this here before applying for a patent .

Glass backs are sooo 2015! They're heavy, slippery, and they break easily. Plastic may look cheap, but it's way more functional. Glass backs have no place on compact phones that are meant to be light.
Since the display doesn't really go edge-to-edge, raising the body around it slightly would protect the screen against falls on smooth surfaces.
And that camera box sticking out of the back? Make the phone half a milimeter thicker and recess the camera lens a bit. This also creates room for a slightly bigger battery. Win/win!
