Thoughts on Motorola's "Edge to Edge" Screen? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I was following the live blog today on the new Razrs, as I was with Verizon and wanted one when they came out, but moved to ATT and got the Skyrocket instead. Which I have not to this day regretted, as it is the most complete package in a phone I have owned. So much so that i have felt little desire to upgrade to anything new, including the GS3. Especially including the GS3, which seems to follow this new trend of incremental design and feature upgrades.
I've been waiting for some entirely new feature to catch my attention, as NFC and SAMOLED and actually usable cameras did before. The edge to edge rumors really piqued my interest, as I have recently been struggling to understand the need for the top and bottom bezels to be so large, especially since ICS and up has on screen navigation keys which are, to me, exactly the kind of intuitive and unique feature Android should be shooting to incorporate across the range.
Anyhow... the Razr M's Edge to Edge screen is not impressing me. I compared bezels and it appears only slightly smaller than our skyrocket's bezels, not to mention still having that pointless bezel up top and bottom. Any opinions?
On a side note that new iPhone screen looks rediculous. Let's copy Android's 16:9 ratio but leave the gigantic bezels that Android doesn't even exaggerate that much anymore. Or Since 2011.

No side-bezel is stupid because everytime you pick up your phone you'll be tapping something. Also, top/bottom bezel is important.. not useless. There's a camera, microphone, speaker, and light sensors there.

Edge to edge screen......very interesting, only thing is the top and bottom bezel is required for proximity sensor and other sensors as well as camera. The onscreen capacitive buttons doesn't sound that bad but I like them off the screen. Just personal preference.

Well, it is really not "edge to edge":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2uWYrID1y4

Well then if I continue to see this crap about "reported" it will be considered as trolling, breaking the rules!, so just report (if you really do report at all) and wait for us to action. Thread locked as this topic has nothing to do with Sky Rocket.

One week with the AT&T HTC One X

Well, I saw a Rogers user posting his comments after a week of use so I figured I'd post some opinion as well, especially since I disagree with several of his opinions.
First, I've noticed the wi-fi issue as well. As with some other posters my router is not known to be super reliable, so that could have some impact. Also, it seems that some folks are having success switching to G instead of N and that may also help as I believe I am on G at work and I haven't had any issue with wi-fi at work. Hopefully this can be fixed with a software update.
I first reported some disappointment with the warm hue of the screen, and either it is growing on me or it is burning in a little bit and the tans, greens, and oranges are starting to look better. The screen as a whole looks fantastic. Several people have remarked how it looks like a sticker on the phone or like the image is sitting on top of the glass. The resolution is fantastic and everything looks crisp vibrant. Reds, blues, and yellows look fine too. White seems pretty white to me. When comparing a white screen on the HOX to an AMOLED screen the HOX looks white and the AMOLED looks blue.
Battery life is about what I was expecting and seems to be on-par with the international version. I've not had any trouble making it from 8AM to 11PM even with pretty heavy usage. It's not as good as my Captivate on AOKP which could make it ~30 hrs under my normal usage which is relatively light. Because the HOX is such a great phone and it's brand new I've been using it a lot more so the most I think I've gotten is 18 or 19 hours which most people would consider fantastic in consideration of the usage.
Camera is by no means average and it absolutely smokes the iPhone 4S. I took some test shots with my wife's iPhone and the HOX just blows it away. The flash is much better, but even in low light without the flash the HOX looks better, has less grain to the photos and generally focuses better and has better color reproduction. The speed of the camera is incredible and using the burst mode to capture a moment is a stroke of genius if you have a dog or a kid that you want to take a pic of them doing something cute.
I've not had any status bar icon issues or in call volume adjustment.
My biggest complaint is not being able to turn off LTE since I'm not in an LTE area. I tried using a different APN and I didn't notice any difference and it didn't improve my battery life at all. I only had the new APN for ~2 days but I felt I may have been getting worse battery life, but certainly wasn't getting better battery life so I just went back to the stock APN.
I guess the Rogers poster was coming from an iPhone and remarked on a slight lag moving between homescreens. This is exagerated to say the least. This phone with sense 4.0 is the fastest UI I've seen on an android phone and the only phone that is more fluid is the iphone and that is due to apple putting realtime priority on UI rendering computations while Android puts industry standard normal priority on rendering. No matter how good the code is, no matter how fast the processor is, it's just never going to look like the iphone because it's never going to have realtime priority. That said, this phone responds instantly to all touches in virtually all parts of the phone. The only times I've seen lag is either app related or network related. It's a great user experience.
Another concern I saw in some other threads that I completely agree with is that the white smudges easily. In addition, the polycarbonate shell may be very durable in that it protects the phone, but it's basically the same material as a LEGO and as such can be dented with a drop as I've unfortunately experienced already. As far as the smudging the phone wipes back to a bright white easily, but probably needs to be cleaned every few days to keep it bright white and not getting dull. The white looks fantastic, best looking white phone out there, but I'd have to reluctantly recommend the grey if you aren't going to use a case in order to hide some dirt and dings more easily.
Overall, this is a fantastic phone. HTC has lived up to the hype and produced THE top android the device out right now. If you want the best in basically every area, you want an HOX right now, and it doesn't look like Samsung is going to beat it and it's going to take quite some time for the S3 to come to the US. If you've got an ATT upgrade in the next 2 months, you'd be crazy not to drop it on the HOX.
Hey since your on the AT & T version and you don't have the setting to turn LTE off. Type *#*#4636#*#* go to phone information and you can switch it to GSM/HSPA only. Let me know if that works for you!
My two biggest concerns right now are the wi-fi performance (which seems to be real and potentially fixed with a software update) and the battery life. In a few days we should see professional reviews for the AT&T model that will be able to compare the international and LTE editions under equal usage.
I know the white is harder to keep clean but I really prefer the look of it over the grey. Maybe I'd just make the effort to keep it clean.
I also think the camera lens is an issue with respect to scratches. I don't plan on using a case 95% of the time, so I'd have to find a DIY way to cover said lens while not in use. (I was thinking a small piece of electrical tape or something along those lines.)
I'm also going to wait until the WWDC keynote next month to see what Apple has in store for iOS 6.
If the wi-fi issue can get settled, battery life is solid while using LTE, iOS 6 isn't leaps and bounds better than iOS 5, then I'll probably make the jump. Some things to line up first though.

I did some more testing with the camera and no doubt it is able to create some fairly high quality shots. I just find the camera experience a bit easier overall with the i4s. We have matte grey walls at home and for some reason they always show up weird and distorted, I'll take a pic after work tonight and post it to show you what I mean.. I'll also post a comparison pic off the iPhone camera.

Odd question, can you do time lapse videos? I know this is an ICS thing, just wondering if HTC left it in?

No clue if I'll end up getting the One X, but if I do, I'm only going to use a case when necessary (working around the house, etc). Love the way that polycarbonate feels in my hand. Camera lens needs to be covered with something though.
Has anyone messed with the APN settings and noticed a difference in battery life. You definitely can force HSPA/+.

Geek rage at the GSIII

An Honest rant from an android lover:
So the GSIII was announced today and my first reaction when I saw the pictures was “oh god please let this be a joke” (P.S you’ll hear me comparing the GSIII to the One X a lot in this post, but that is because that’s another top dog of android right now.) This is my opinion about the GSIII. Yes it is true I do not have the device, but this is my reaction to the press shoots.
Some of the things that ticked me off the most:
The super ugly looking camera on the back, I don’t care much it freaking looks like a pebble. It’s my phone, not a freaking rock use to throw at someone. The GSII camera looked great; the nexus S camera look great, even the galaxy nexus camera look pretty decent. That freaking ugly looking lump of cancer just looks horrible. Take a look at the HTC one X camera; it looks great even if it sticks out a bit. Putting the speaker phone next to the camera? Seriously? I understand symmetry is important but that is just stupid (and did I mention it looks ugly?).
The long home button is a disaster. I don’t need a long home button; my fingers are not that fat. That thing sticks out like a sore thumb, an ugly cancer ridden sore thumb.
No on screen buttons
I never understood the point of soft touch buttons. Ever since I got my first android device I question the point of soft touch buttons. It’s not like one can physically feel them. From what I understand, why anyone would put soft touch keys in the days of 4.0 is to increase the usable screen size. But you screwed that up too. What is up with that space between the button and the screen? That just adds to the length of the phone. The One X has soft keys, but its evenly spaced and not a mile away from the screen. It also doesn’t stick out its home button.
That plastic looking shell is ugh… god save me. If HTC can do polycarbonate shell, why can’t you Samsung? Huh?
Everything an android specs geek loves in an ugly shell.
microSD, removable battery, NFC, Quad core processor, wireless charging, big screen with 720p display, thin and light weight. It’s (almost) everything anyone can ask for, but dammit Samsung the thing is ugly.
I never thought I would be the one to hate on the GSIII. As a proud owner of the Galaxy Nexus, I’m truly disappointed.
The camera isn't that ugly. It's alright.
I do agree on the spacing of the home button. It's just to much space that could have been removed or used for screen size

Verizon S5 Thoughts/Feedback Thread

After having mine now for an hour and using it....the fingerprint scanner doesn't work as good as I would like it. My thumb is at an angle when holding the phone. I added it in using that angle, but it wants you to come straight down, which means I have to change the way i hold it to use it and have it register.
Verizon added so much bloat it's crazy!
the heart rate monitor. absolutely useless to over 90% of the consumers.... maybe even 95%
Seems they screwed up adding all the extra features that as mentioned here, a lot probably will not use. Finger print scanners are prone to screw up and the heart rate sensor seems frilly for most. The cost of this "customer will like it" fluff is a bigger device. The device IMO is now too big in relation to the display and awkward with one hand for most people. The S4 was near borderline already.
Samsung truly has a bloat and new feature fetish. They seem to think the combination appeals more to customers. For the majority it seems No, but the minority is perhaps Yes. Catch is everyone gets stuck with a bigger, bloat ridden device- like it or not if want the S5.
The funny thing is the S5 now has near the same overall size of my S4 with a bigger battery.
M8 is also too big IMO, so the S5 is not alone in this regard.
I actually found the chrome trim be terrible looking, and despite my plans not to use a case, had to get a thin black bumper to cover it. There is no doubt the M8 looks better, and is very comfortable to hold. I had to have the S5 because the screen just seemed much better, and part of it isn't wasted by the nav bar like on the M8.
I haven't had enough time to play with all of the features yet, however the screen has been nothing but impressive so far. I don't like the new settings so far, but that's probably because I'm just not used to it.

My biggest beef with the M8 was that the speakers make the phone so much bigger than it needs to be. If you hold the S5 and the M8 next to eachother there is about half an inch of wasted space, especially if you factor in the navbar. For people that use the speakers, it might be worth it, but I would not.

How is the screen in direct sunlight? I saw a review comparing it with others at max brightness which showed not much improvement. I think only Auto-Brightness will really max out the screen's brightness and I'm not sure if they manually maxed it out or it was it on auto.
And are you using it on the default mode or did you change it to cinematic?
i love the fingerprint scanner..works perfectly for my thumb for 1 handed use..
only thing i'm not liking right now is it seems to have that same body shift issue my white S3 had, that my S4 didn't..like as if the battery isn't big enough for the cavity, so it moves and makes the body feel like its twisting so it makes some lil snappy creak noises. kinda sucks, but oh well. maybe the battery just isn't big enough for the spot,w ho knows.

Granted I only spent about 5 minutes with it outside so far, but the difference was HUGE from my S3 (which I really struggled with in the sun). I did not mess with any display settings yet, so it was all default. I got it on lunch and I'm working, so I've only been able to play with it here and there.
The display continues to be impressive, which is the main reason I wanted it. I can't speak to the difference between the s4-5, but between the 3 and 5 its night and day.
I'm excited to get it home and drop in a sink of water.
I like the phone. Definitely has a lot of features that I won't use but that's a Galaxy device. If we're on XDA, we know what we're getting into. The bigger size to achieve the IP67 certification is somewhat annoying but again, nothing unexpected and a nice feature. One that I'm sure will save more than a few people. So, despite the usually Galaxy "extras", I'm enjoying it. I will have to get a replacement as there is a permanent " smudge " on the display. Almost as if there's a coating for the IP67 certification and that coating wasn't applied correctly. No biggie. As long as VZW cooperates lol.

Let's see these pics. No way worse than G2.
Not liking the recent apps button. Came from an s3 and I'm used to tapping for the menu to come up. Now it's needs a long press. If I could just swap the long and short press functions I would pretty happy. Only had it since 10am.
Screen is definitely better than the s3. Using it to navigate on the dash on a bright sunny made it very apparent. S3 looked dark and hard to see, the s5 looked way better and easy to see.
The chrome around this all black is not to my taste, but I'm hoping my new uag case will cover it.

The chin...

Does anyone LIKE the size of the chin? I found myself instantly pleased with the added area to handle my phone. I actually left the sim in my 5x for a while to be sure. But I've never noticed how much I use the top and bottom bezels in portrait view. Especially when. Showing someone pictures or portrait videos. I dunno... I'm loving it. Perfect size where my thumbs never bumps the touchscreen.
Am I the only one?
I have no problem with it either. Take a look at the iPhone 6, which I have, and the bezel is about the same size as the Pixel. Actually the whole phone looks similar with a very similar feel. The Pixel is a little larger screen dimension wise but both are beautiful devices. And let's be honest here, if you can compare to an iPhone you're saying something. This device is a jewel if the battery can hold up.
I just got my Pixel today, and I wish the chin was a bit smaller to be honest. The onscreen buttons take up a good chunk of space that I feel makes it look a bit...iPodish? That's for sure not an accurate assessment, but it is what I think when I look at the chin of the phone especially. Like I said, first day and all. I love everything else about this phone though. I even think the price is justifiable.
I actually like the chin too. I find it helps my thumb reach the home button much more comfortably when using it one handed, rather than over extending my thumb to reach the bottom of my phone.
Plus it gives the phone a very minimal/elegant look. So no complaints from me!

Yes same here... While at first I thought it was huge and unsightly, when I think about it, I wouldn't want my thumb to have to reach any further down to get to the nav bar. It keeps the nav bar at a perfect height. Still seems kind of boring though. But I'm also glad they didn't put any branding there so kind of a conundrum for me.

I dont mind the bottom too. It's not super noticeable and I agree that it makes the nav bar easier to reach.
I just wish people would stop calling it a "chin" - it's a bezel, not a chin. Look at the original G1 for a "chin".

Totally... A lot of people seem to want this phone to be the opposite of iPhone. But we already had that... The Nexus lineup. Sure some were better than others but they were never trying to compete with anyone directly. Just good enough with a great price.

HAH. I've been Androiding since the G1... and yea, that thing had a Joe Swanson Chin for real.
I just joined the chin lingo cause everyone else seemed to be doing it... Peer pressure!
this is #13 of a long list of reasons i'm returning the Pixel. this phone makes so little sense to me i cannot even wrap my head around it, probably because i don't talk TO my damn phone. leave the AI for the kiddos. going back to my ****ing galaxy S3. maybe HTC 10 after that. dunno.
Now that I have my phone, in person, I don't mind it. I prefer balance/symmetry and the chin provides that. I would prefer a speaker there instead, but oh well …
The chin I actually don't notice. Maybe it's because I have the 5' black version. To me, the chin makes it better for one handed use. The galaxy s7 was hard for one handed use for me anyway. I think the chin thing is really blown out of proportion. Just my two cents.
In theory I'd like to see a smaller chin/ bezel and increase the screen size while keeping the overall size the same.
In practice, I don't mind the chin. I don't notice it at all.
I hear y'all but that Jay Leno chin and fivhead are fails to me. I do appreciate all the reasons why you like them but the could have put like 8 speakers in that space. Subs, tweeters and all that! Still love the phone though.

Now that I have my phone, in person, I don't mind it. I prefer balance/symmetry and the chin provides that. I would prefer a speaker there instead, but oh well …

Totally agree with both of you. I think it really adds the balance. When I saw it at first I wondered, but once I used it I don't mind a bit. I use headphones so I dont care about huge speakers.
Coming from the BB Z30 I am use to the chin and prefer it becuase of the way I hold the phone and navigate with my thumb. Now if only google would pick up a bb 10 device and take down some notes. Like moving things down low so I dont have to stretch my hand to the top.

Same here, I only use my phones one-handed, whether it's the Pixel, Notes, iPhone 7+, etc. The extra space is where my palm digs into. The BlackBerry Classic is the only device I have to use two hands, but da*n, that physical keyboard is sooo worth it.

"Look" of the device (aesthetics)

Is the Google Pixel 2 XL as good-looking as you are (despite your receding hairline, adult-onset acne, and massive weight gain)? Rate this thread to express whether you think the Google Pixel 2 XL is attractive. A higher rating indicates that you would even go as far to say that the Google Pixel 2 XL is a beautiful phone.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I like it. Idk why LG went with the curved glass, but it feels good. The useable screen actually stops where the curve begins. So the curve is just a black bezel. Maybe they're amping up for some sort of Sammy edge in the future? I hope not.

I'd say 7.5 of 10 on the all black

I visited Verizon store today and my first impression was pretty good! They only had the black version but it looked nice, better than the original pixel XL. However, there were two things I've noticed. First, the top and bottom bezels aren't symmetrical. Top bezel is definitely larger and it was pretty apparent when using the device. That's personal preference but I didn't like it. Second, are the scratches on the screen. I haven't heard many people mention it but the screen is actually slightly curved like on the Samsung devices but the glass also slopes down on the top and bottom. It's only been on display for a day first but it was already noticably scratched on the bottom bezel, on the "arch".
I went back to the store to take few pictures to illustrate what I'm talking about + curved screen

Someone had to of dropped that while putting on display. Those look like scratches from some sort of impact and is why I always use a case! ha
Dang it folks, test the speaker volume and post!

I played a video on youtube on max volume for few seconds but did not want to be obnoxious in the store hah. Anyways, speakers sounded very loud and clear, much much better than my Note8 (no surprise).

Another thing I forgot to mention is that display is much less vibrant than Note 8. Colors are washed out, especially reds. I will try to take few more pictures later today
I liked what I saw today, although I think I'd have preferred a single front facing speaker with a shorter device, but I know people are obsessed with front facing stereo speakers for some reason

I just want a device with reserve volume not one that I max out for a particular purpose and its not loud enough.
I did the 5X tweak to make both speakers play back and a volume boost flash that worked very well.
I want my Waze to at least get my attention while cruising to a good part of a song .
I like the app drawer is transparent instead of the bright white that the OG Pixel has. Wish the rest of the system followed suit (settings, contacts, msgs and such). Or at least had options.

Sorry. I was speaking of software, you guys are discussing hardware.
The screen colors looks like this for a more realistic presentation of color, this can be remedied with color mode like Ex kernel color option to add more saturation.
This phone is definitely not a looker. But gonna cover it up anyway and hopefully the bezels wont bother me.
I'm not sure really why it matters to a point. It's just going to be in a case anyway.

Well that's true for the back....But the front of the phone still has an aesthetic. There is no doubt there is some unique bezel stuff going on with this phone.

An exchange on a phone that hadnt been released yet when I said this?
dang it people (would use harsher language but dont want to deal with a ban or fragile persons) STOP going to verizon and judging their crappy demo locked display version as what the phone is going to be like. as for scratches, well DUH, if you ever worked retail, you would already know humans treat stuff thats not theirs like total $#!t! id bet if i drop my phone on my floor it wont get the same dings and scratches these "CUSS"tomers put devices through. dont you dare ask me to drop my phone, im the good "egg daddy" with my devices. id drop my wife before my phone (thats why she doesn't do trust falls while im holding electronics.)
About That Display & Critics
This may be a good opportunity for Google to make a bold move by recalling as necessary all the units for the Pixel 2 XL and rebuild those displays quickly with full screen all around with no black nudges whatsoever surrounding the speakers or anything else like front camera and sensors on these screens as possible, therefore blending in the full display entirely, and achieving likely the thinnest bezels, to kick Apple iPhone X's behind big time!

Sure, that's a reasonably ridiculous request...
No! That understandingly what is called a wild bold move, indeed. Google won't go bankrupt after that. To the contrary upon the outcome, their shares will culminate more than ever before. Thus with that 'WBM' potential success, they may just become dramatically the number one seed to beat in the smartphone market, after all.
