is it possible to have custom kernels with unrooted device and stock os? also, what custom kernle are you using if it's not a secret?
I've been on Havoc and then Omni Treskmod but both had certain issues (battery life / banking apps / default camera not working etc.) so I'm really thinking of reverting back to stock and unrooting the device. But I also enjoy some of the custom kernel features that are available out there so was wondering if it's possible to get best of both worlds

I dont believe that is possible. I use Elementalx and have no issues like that. Banking app is probably just because of root.

It definitely is because of root but I was unsuccessful in trying to hide root with Magisk... So seems like the only way to go is to revert back to stock without root...

Seems like it. Although, when my banking app had tap to pay built in, I was able to hide root and use it. Now I'm forced to use google pay and I can't get it to work while rooted.

My favorite has always been elementalx. It's great on every device I've had.
What about resurrection vs crdroid? I Ave been reading on both and both seems stable and good.
I've tried multiple custom roms but keeping coming back to stock, every rom seems to have some kind of functionality missing that the stock rom has, it's not worth it to lose base functionality just to have something different looking.

Yes, you can use alot of custom kernels unrooted. I have used Weeb and blu_spark unrooted without any problems and with Safety Net passing. If they are designed to work out of the box without any configuration with root apps and have CTS check bypass (kernel level) it should work without a problem like stock/unrooted, little research might be needed tho. Good luck.

Thanks for your input. I have actually unrooted my device and with a little bit of debloating I am getting the best battery life I have ever had (compared to quite a few custom roms & kernels I have tried out) + I was also able to get GCam with aux lenses, Youtube Vanced and get all the customization I need using Nova Prime Launcher. Really don't see myself coming back to any custom rom, as they tend to have bugs here and there, or have something that simply doesn't work the way it should. Stock everything gives me everything I need from this phone :good:

Hi all, I have had HTC One M8 for a month now and I just love it.
The only thing I would like to know that if I installed a custom rom would my phone function better?
I honestly got sick of installing roms on my old Galaxy S3, and every time I find something that I don't like in that rom or a bug.
Please help me deciding.

Just because you root doesn't mean you need to install a custom rom.
Rooting and keeping stock ROM will allow you to tweak the stock rom to your liking. You can use any number of tools like the Xposed mods, tasker scripts, themers, etc. The possibilities are endless.
I have always rooted and tweaked the stock ROMS until late in the device life when I won't be getting the next version of Android. Then I load a custom ROM.

To me, the biggest advantage of rooting is removing bloatware (apps you don't want.) There's no need to install a custom ROM if you don't want to do so but there are advantages to custom ROMs, several already have much of the bloat removed.
They probably won't make your phone function better.

If you are keeping the stock ROM do NOT remove the bloatware if it is a system file. (Most of them are) If you remove them you will not be able to take the OTA updates from your carrier until you restore them. You are better off disabling them or using Titanium Backup to Freeze them. That way they are easily reversed so you can take the OTA update.

I used to crack flash back on my Galaxy Nexus. I had the M8 for about a month before I rooted and S'Offed. I'm hesitant to flash a full custom ROM as of yet because stock plus Xposed is keeping me extremely happy. For me, the Xposed framework and modules is such a great setup because it allows me to pick and choose which tweaks I want.
Was gonna remain stock till I downloaded an xposed mod that messed up my wifi (possibly due to having a feature another xposed module was handling turned on) . Instead of reflashing and adding all the tweaks and flash zip to a stock ROM, I went ahead and flashed cleanrom which is basically debloated with all the tweaks/mods I already previously had and wanted.
Cleanrom plus the xposed modules like sense6 toolbox, gravity box, XSense, etc make staying stock or stock-ish a very glamorous option
Sounds like what you want is some good old fashioned CleanROM :good:

Completely agree. This is absolutely as bone close to stock as you can get basically. Can't even disable hardware keys without build.prop hacks, and doesn't even come rooted. Almost nothing is taken from anything but AOSP except CAF improvements for speed, and battery in the background. Have this as my backup ROM right now to prep for android M roms in their bone stock glory till we get some real modding done to them. Used it for a bit, buttery smooth, seriously amazing battery, and would recommend to ANYONE wanting rock solid AOSP.
I've always asked to me this thing, because I don't want to install a AOSP ROM, I prefer to stay stock and flash some mods and kernels. It is not possible?
In the case of AOSP roms, the camera has the same quality as the Google's stock roms?
Maybe you can try PureNexus, it's so stable and even faster than stock. Same camera quality as stock, even whole UI is same as stock, just some additional features.
BTW you can also flash kernel on stock rom.

I don't really get what you mean. With Samsung you lose a lot of features going from TouchWiz to AOSP. You don't lose any features going from the stock Pixel OS to say PureNexus. It looks the same, has the same features and more, better performance, etc.

Dude, just root it, enjoy stock if you want and flash a custom kernel. If you decide to venture out, give PN a try.. It is exactly what you're looking for, just an AOSP rom. There is barely any difference between a stock google rom and AOSP.. no one is going to build a stock google rom, it's a waste of time

ah darn ok. Right now I'm just running stock, custom kernel, and SuperSU. I'm not sure if it is just getting older or what, but I haven't felt the need to beyond this with the phone I just got. My Nexuses all are customized, but this is just pretty basic.
The benefit I suppose is even with root and a custom kernel the ROM is still pretty reliable. Other custom ROMs in the past usually would have things come up from time to time. Nonetheless, I'm always thankful for the work the devs do:good:

Yeah I've had stock lock up for me once. Been running PN since January and it's more stable then stock.

U can give Elite ROM 7.2 a try.....but it isn't perfect in terms of magisk, permission manager etc minor bugs- better performance than stock
LOS, AOSP have performance issues imo
I tried almost every ROM and finally settled with stock if u want most stable and everything working accepting poor optimization of RAM and performance of EMUI 5.0
Here's a guide on bloatware safe to remove made by me https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-6x/how-to/guide-list-bloat-software-emui-safe-to-t3700814 - it could sound boring, but manually remove bloats on EMUI is the safe way to achieve a "clean" rom (stable the most, overall) for your father in law, actually. Hope it could be helpful.

Hello guys
I decided to root my device and if already I'm doing it I decided to have a custom ROM since I read people like it more than the oxygen OS.
Now I don't know which one to chose?
xXx NoLimits or Havoc-OS? And why?
I'd really appreciate it if you help to decide!
Thank you in advance!
is this Havoc-Oos rom based on stock?
No limits is not a rom itself. It's a powerful tweaking module for magisk with MANY options
I would suggest reading up on it before flashing that or anything in that case

No limits is good as is Renovate ICE. As far as custom ROMS go, crDroid and Resurrection Remix are the best with crDroid having slightly more options. The Devs are very active and are very good at squashing bugs quickly as well.

I'd certainly try ResurrectionRemix. I had the WiFi drop out issue on havoc and other custom roms, but RR is running perfectly! No issues battery life, as for me, its farsuperior to OOS (6hrs SOT vs up to 8hrs - though your usage, app installations may vary such battery consumption) and its full of settings/tweaks. Plus updates are super frequent, like every other day and the dev/maintainer is responsive to queries.
The only thing I've found is USB File transfer isn't currently working for me, but not a deal breaker by any means as I just reboot to twrp. Plus its working for others.
So yeah, give that a go I say!

With a magisk module haha that's not even possible. And everything xXx does anyone else could do in their own without an automated script it's basically just all build.prop changes which is super easy to do by yourself with a text editor and you can debloat anything you want from the file system with a root file explorer. Flash bliss or rice is you're staying on oos. xXx literally does nothing it's just a placebo.

I approve this message. Bliss is overall the best Rom with the best battery but it doesn't have the most features because MSM Extended does and there is no debating. Bliss and PA are the most stable. Right now I'm Stock with Renovate Ice. I find no limit overrated because there really isn't much too gain as far as performance on stock and I actually enjoy debloating, side loading apps, and tweaking on my own.
***edited***
go for crDroid. You wont find anything as smooth and power efficient while having tons of customisation.
I think the take home message OP is to give them all a try and see what suits your needs.
You may want all the features that some custom roms offer, you may not experience any of the issues, or you may not need any features and encounter bugs.
I definitely enjoyed havoc, but the WiFi drop out issue was a deal breaker. That's non existent, for me, on RR and so I'm here to stay.
So just give them a whirl yourself and you'll find what's gonna work best for you ?

There is debating if you are telling a complete fallacy. Unless something drastic has happened in the month or so time since I've used Bliss my statement still stands. Evolution X and MSM trump Bliss in the feature department

No you're just wrong msm never had more features than bliss ever maybe you should actually flash them both. I've built both and still build Bliss. I built msm way before it was here on xda before anyone else did. MSM DOES NOT HAVE MORE FEATURES THAN BLISS! This is discussion is over.
