Is it worth buying over a display dead Oneplus 6? - OnePlus Nord Questions & Answers

Hello guys, I need some advice on purchasing Oneplus Nord. My apologies if I violate any community guidelines.
I own an oneplus 6 and its display got damaged. I own it since its launch and I am a heavy user and it has seen its fair share of wear and tear. I also have old moto g5s plus running custom rooms which I only use for android app development.
The new Oneplus Nord does look compelling for the price but in the market, I see realme phones with snapdragon 855 chipsets. I do rely on custom ROMs once the manufacturers update window passes but I am not a die-hard Rom hopper.
Please suggest me if it is a good idea to purchase the OnePlus Nord to use it for the next 2 to 3 years with stock OS and then use it for development purpose with a custom ROM.
OR should I just replace the Oneplus 6 screen and call it a day??
PS: I have never experience 90Hz screen refresh rate.
Thank you

How much would the screen repair cost you? I personally wouldn´t do it if it´s ~100$.
Is your OP6 still usable? Then why not use it for develpment and get a Nord. You can always mirror/stream the OP6 display onto your PC if it´s too damaged and use it that way.

i have a OP5 with display issue as well.. the original touch screen went unresponsive three months ago.. display was fine though.. i checked OP repair and they charged HK$23xx (around US$300) for replacing the touch screen, the motherboard and the battery, so basically everything except the frame.. i chose to replace with a 3rd party touch screen for HK$700 (around US$90).. it worked for 3 months and then the touch screen did not respond again.. now i understand why OP repair quoted to replace the motherboard as well as i think its not just the display part but also fault in the main component..
now im using this OP5 exactly as @Saiger mentioned, connecting it to PC via USB cable and control it from the PC..
had considered OP7 and OP8 but their prices are beyond my acceptable range.. kept an eye on Nord and now its finally announced.. the spec seems good (not top grade but good for my usage) and price is okay.. so i shall definitely get it in Aug when its available..
just wanna share my experience for your reference..

Yes, that is my fear also. I had a Micromax(Indian Phone Company) phone with dead display and after replacement, the touch went crazy. So I am afraid to repair my Oneplus 6.
Thankfully I will be giving interviews for some jobs soon. And in India OP will launch a 6/64 GB variant. Depending on my job I'll make the decision.
Thanks for replying.

need a lcd, touch pro 2 fit the 7 pro?

Hi, i am in desperate need of a lcd display for a 7 pro but they are seriously hard to get hold of!
I have looked on ebay and theres only ones from HK or China and even then the sellers feedback on screens is poor!
I have phoned countless repair shops in the uk and only a couple claim to be able to get hold of the screen but then demand that they fix the phone themselves and a stupid fee and will not supply the screen to me.
one thing i have noticed it that the touch pro 2 and 7 pro screens look identical apart from the colour of the ribbon that connects them to the main cable that goes through the slide body.
there is no visual difference between the screens or connector cables other thab colour and they have the same specs also-
480 x 800 pixels, 3.6 inches and a 259 ppi pixel density
Does anyone know if they are actually interchangeable or not? i cant find a screen anywhere and my wife is not pleased with me right now as ive only just got the phone and a broke the lcd trying to remove the digitizer even though i was ultra carefull and used lots of heat, please can someone help!!!!
Thanks, Steve.
Hello! To most simply answer your question, no. The screens are very different despite looking similar. The old TP2 screen is not multitouch and WP7 requires this. Also, the old screen utilizes a stylus while the newer 7 pro screen doesn't even recognize that type of touch.
It is your phone after all, so if you would like to try this that's your choice. However its too much effort to affix the ribbon to the pcb to even make it worth it. My old TP2 has a cracked digitizer which I have a replacement for, but the ribbon is machine pressed onto the pcb and reattaching this connection would be very difficult without the type of heat/pressure used in the manufacturing of the phone.
If you decide to try it let us know the results!
I'm sorry, I just seen you said the lcd itself, I thought you were meaning the digitizer screens.
That being said, maybe the swap will work, as long as they hook up the same?

i found a seller with genuine touch pro 2 screens who is willing to take it back if it does not work for me, i will let everyone know if it works!
I can confirm, the touch pro 2 screen does NOT work in the 7 pro, it is almost identical but the conector is at most 1mm wider than the 7 pro but its enough to stop if fitting into the socket
Back to the drawing board for me i guess.

not been on for a few days, thankyou for the link its still there and in europe!
I bought another 7 pro handset as i could not wait any longer, i had been forced back to my old Touch pro (raphael) and although not a bad phone and running a custom 6.5.3 rom , it just cant cope on the web anymore as all the standards have changed and nobody is supporting windows mobile anymore.
Its a shame cos windows mobile is by far a better operating system than windows phone, updated and running on better hardware it would have rocked.
even though i bought a new handset ive always intended on fixing the other one when i get the chance and have put a bid on that screen to remove the buy it now.
Fingers crossed that it dont go up in price, my wife will kill me if spend much more on these phones lol
once its fixed its going to go in its box and live in a safe place till ive worn out this new one, dont think i wll sell it, thanks for your help, you get a thanks meter point for this :good:
Steve.
You are welcome I was a little worried you might not get to the link fast enough but thankfully you did! I seen that and figured its a steal considering the lcd is nearly that price alone, plus all the work needed to change it. Good luck I hope you win it
Thanks geeze

as long as you get the right screen, theres no reason why you cant do it yourself, just go slow, very slow, read tutorials and be very carefull of all cables and boards inside. if it its the glass digitizer that is broken and not the whole display, be very very carefull when removing it from the lcd as theres a big chance of breaking the lcd as its removed, heat to relax the glue is your friend! if the glass is shatterd, removing the glass bit by bit instead of trying to remove it all at once may proove easyer and less risky on the lcd.
Good luck, steve.

[Q] Star S9 Chinese Phone Cracked screen

I have bought the chines Star S9, fooled by the low price and extremely high specs, from here: flosmall.com/phones/star-s9-red-detail
And I must say that despite the phone having terrible battery life, randomly going to sleep, being on constant roaming (it was charging me as normal - ufff), having weird chines app installed that couldn't be removed (spyware or surveillance - never know with Chinese), the smart cover not working and having the most absurd themes(there was in fact no way to delete them or go back to original theme) i was happy having payed 175 pounds for a phone with FHD screen and 32 gb rom. Then after a month of it it dropped from about 50cm to a wooden floor, and the screen cracked in two(irony is it split right down the middle - left hand side is unresponsive while right works fine). When will they make screens that last (i know that iphone screens are good, but for android i heard ppl complain even about newest phones dropping from small distances and cracking).
Anyways here finally is my question. Does anyone know or have any information where i can get a replacement screen? Even the part number of screen would be helpful. Hell the website of manufacturer would be a plus (many star phones on Amazon but no manufacturer website - WTF??)
Message to all, DEFINITELY DO NOT BUY FROM CHINA or from outside Europe and America. 2nd DO NOT BUY CHEAP CHINESE PHONES I know just how tempting it is but save yourself the trouble and waste of money.
Thnaks for any help given,
Best,
Max
Cracked Screen
hi,the same thing happened to me a couple of days ago. I have been looking everywhere and the only thing helpful I have found was a 'LCD with Touch Screen Digitizer Assembly for Star S9 5.0 inch' on Aliexpress
However I don't know how to install the screen and it costs another £75.
If you know how to install screens or can help in anyway please do.
This phone cost me a lot of money and I don't want to waste it.
Thanks
Joel

Severe image retention/"burn in" problem with Redmi Note 5 Pro! LQ Panels

I'm creating this thread to spread awareness, Xiaomi is using really low quality panels for the RMN5P, I got the phone and on day ONE, using official MIUI, my screen got the google keyboard G logo and the on-screen keys burned-in or persisting in the screen like in the attachment, that's the G logo in GBoard, I have to admit I'm very disappointed by Xiaomi on this one, if you have the same issue I encourage you to share it on this thread, and to also let Xiaomi know about this on the miui forums, thank you.
Edit: I got my device replaced and the new one does it as well 2 broken devices total
Don't have this problem, using it for 3 days since tuesday.
don't have this problem with almost one month usage

Thank you for your input guys but obviously not everyone is going to get bad panels, the issue is that Xiaomi is selling some phones with completely unacceptable panels and they have to become aware of it, I can't believe I got a brand new phone and images are retained on the screen from day one, and I'm not the only one, it has also been mentioned here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-5-pro/help/3-days-usage-burn-t3793599
I don't have this issue. I've turned on display for 30 minutes on full brightness at the home screen only. And don't have image retention. I have Tianma TD4310 panel. I'm also checking cause I'm still on warranty.
It would help people to contribute to this problem if someone would post how users can find out which panel they have. I´ve heard the Aida64 app could do it, but I don´t see the panel manufacturer listed anywhere....
This usually happens on tianma displays
heres a little neat trick to avoid this
Turn on Reading mode and set the calibration to 1/4 so that it wouldnt be too yellow, tadah no more retention
^ It's a known fact.
You can either do what he said or you can use a custom rom (wait for one with kcal), go to display settings, color calibration and from 100% go to 95% to all the colors. You will have slightly lower brightness but no color retention.

True
Have the same problem with Mi A1 [Tianma Panel]
Service center rejected my claim that it is software issue (They downgraded OS to Nougat - Their solution)
Its there even with Nougat, have to get display panel replaced before warranty expires
Very very true
No one should buy this crap. barely 2 months of usage and the screen burn in is severe, image retention everywhere I'm very pissed at xiaomi for doing this.
Also got tianma td4310 panel but luckily no burn in after 2 weeks as I don't have mi service centers in my country
I have same problem... Help plz
This also happened to me using a Redmi 5 Plus. Yours is whyred, right?

Type *#*#6484#*#* in the Xiaomi dialer
Ive got tianma. No image retention.
It does have crappy motion clarity tho. Albeit still much better than redmi note 4.
I had the same problem, I send back my note 5 and bought a Oneplus 6. In 60 min i had already ghosting.
To bad, nice phone but a ghosting is not done for me.
Panel was a tianma td4310.
U can test it by yourself, set it for like 15 min on 1 app and focus on some thing I went back to Twitter night view and I saw some details of the previous app on it.
A shame, the tiamma panels on the note 4 had the same problem aswell.
Maybe I wait for the Mi 8 and trade my oneplus in. But the notch is to big to display notification icons....

Cracked screen - Way forward

Stumbled yesterday avoiding an old lady. Dropped my phone in the process onto the pavement from a couple of feet.
Ended up with a cracked screen across the top (pretty patterns etc etc) Screen seems still responsive.
Anyway, what surprised me was the damage caused after a pathetic drop. Really thought this phone was a bit more robust. HAd the plastic case on the body a screen protector too. My first ever cracked screen. Gutted.
Costs so far using threads here and elsewhere are £150 ish. With the 7.1 coming out in a few weeks here in the UK should I hang fire and buy a new 7.1?
Just updated to Pie yesterday too.....:silly:
7.1 is far inferior to the 7 plus.
Slower SoC, smaller battery. And pretty much same price.

Looks to me like they have added this display thing and taken away what makes the phone a good phone.
They have wayyyy too many phones out at the moment.

Well it's actually the successor to the Nokia 7, which wasn't widely available. The 7 Plus will probably get a successor in the 7.1 Plus, which is tipped to get a Snapdragon 710.

If you decide to send the phone in for repairs make sure you take a lot of photos of the phone before sending it.
I cracked the screen also and send it to repair using HMD repair service. Below a few thoughts:
Pros:
- collection, repair and delivery was quick - 7 days from collection to delivery back.
Cons:
- Phone came back with a new scratch on the back (about 3mm long) which I am sure was not there before I send it for repair.
- The replacement screen has a very thin scratch which I saw only 2 weeks after the phone was delivered (I was in holidays when it arrived).
First I thought that the screen is not Gorilla Glass, but since the repair (2 months ago) I have no other scratch on the phone. I guess (I am not sure though, just my impression) they are using grade B screens for replacement.
I did not reported to repair center because it is barely visible and because it was 2 weeks after the delivery.
Also because all the hassle to change phones and setup again.
So if the crack is not too bad (my screen was still working also, but was completely shattered on one side) I would recommend to keep using the phone until they release Nokia 10 and put the £150 towards that.

Have lost trust in HMD as a setup. The way they have messed up the updates is something and your not the only one who has mentioned this issue with repairs to me. The drop was hardly anything but the damage is quite scary.
May look at Moto 6 next.

I do not think it's HMD's fault only.
A friend had to send an S8 plus to have the screen replaced, and same thing happened to him also. I think it's a 'common practice'.
Moto G6 (I asume) is miles away specs vise compared to Nokia 7+ and no Android one.
Bought a new 7 Plus. Sod it. Better the devil you know. Thanks for all guidance and advice folks.

Nonworking screen -is there a way inside phone?

Hi all, my wife cracked and broke the screen on her pixel 4a. For a while it worked fine, and then one day the screen just would not turn on any more.
You can tell the phone boots up because if I connect it to a PC it did recognize it's a pixel4a, and when you touch the fingerprint sensor on the back it vibrates.
I tried a usbc hub and connected HDMI and a mouse to the hub but can't get anything to display on the TV. (Tested these on my OnePlus 9 confirmed working there) On the OnePlus I immediately see a lock screen on the TV and can use the mouse to interact but with the pixel I get nothing.
Is there any other way into the phone?
I'm really not sure it's worth the $140-$200 repair costs especially when a refurb costs similar.
I thought about the pixel6a trade up program but I don't know if it will qualify (requirements were a bit unclear )

There is no way inside other than removing the screen and replacing it, they are a bit tricky I have done several of them , the big expense is the screen, they are not cheap, I get mine from China where they cost about 50 - 100 less then the U.S , and your right it would not qualify for the full 300 trade in though u may get something, You could try selling it on eBay hoping who ever bought it would do a factory reset once repaired, or if it is google locked even a reset won't unlock it the pin needs to be given before setup can begin.
Darn that's what I was afraid of. I wonder why the usbC to HDMI doesn't work on the pixel but does work on my OnePlus

I read somewhere that Google are pushing their streaming through Chromecast. By blocking all your other options, they give you no choice but to do it their way. I have also read that the hardware is physically capable, just blocked in the firmware.
Gah that's such a shame. usbc to a hub is such a cool/useful utility function to have.
found this, but looks like only specific docks work and would have had to install the app previously https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2865484?hl=en

Yes the company is ali express, lots of screens, I actually have purchased the blemished screens which are perfectly good enough for me,
Thanks for the info. I've bought parts on Ali Express - I'll check out the Pixel 4a 4G screens on there. Is the blemish a dead pixel? I'm good with that.

Didn't notice blemished ones for sale and this new one that appears to be "OEM" (or close enough) was $71. I also found a coupon for new Ali Express purchasers so I got another 10 percent off.
