Severe image retention/"burn in" problem with Redmi Note 5 Pro! LQ Panels - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

I'm creating this thread to spread awareness, Xiaomi is using really low quality panels for the RMN5P, I got the phone and on day ONE, using official MIUI, my screen got the google keyboard G logo and the on-screen keys burned-in or persisting in the screen like in the attachment, that's the G logo in GBoard, I have to admit I'm very disappointed by Xiaomi on this one, if you have the same issue I encourage you to share it on this thread, and to also let Xiaomi know about this on the miui forums, thank you.
Edit: I got my device replaced and the new one does it as well 2 broken devices total

Don't have this problem, using it for 3 days since tuesday.

don't have this problem with almost one month usage

Thank you for your input guys but obviously not everyone is going to get bad panels, the issue is that Xiaomi is selling some phones with completely unacceptable panels and they have to become aware of it, I can't believe I got a brand new phone and images are retained on the screen from day one, and I'm not the only one, it has also been mentioned here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-5-pro/help/3-days-usage-burn-t3793599

I don't have this issue. I've turned on display for 30 minutes on full brightness at the home screen only. And don't have image retention. I have Tianma TD4310 panel. I'm also checking cause I'm still on warranty.

It would help people to contribute to this problem if someone would post how users can find out which panel they have. I´ve heard the Aida64 app could do it, but I don´t see the panel manufacturer listed anywhere....

This usually happens on tianma displays
heres a little neat trick to avoid this
Turn on Reading mode and set the calibration to 1/4 so that it wouldnt be too yellow, tadah no more retention

^ It's a known fact.
You can either do what he said or you can use a custom rom (wait for one with kcal), go to display settings, color calibration and from 100% go to 95% to all the colors. You will have slightly lower brightness but no color retention.

True
Have the same problem with Mi A1 [Tianma Panel]
Service center rejected my claim that it is software issue (They downgraded OS to Nougat - Their solution)
Its there even with Nougat, have to get display panel replaced before warranty expires

Very very true
No one should buy this crap. barely 2 months of usage and the screen burn in is severe, image retention everywhere I'm very pissed at xiaomi for doing this.

Also got tianma td4310 panel but luckily no burn in after 2 weeks as I don't have mi service centers in my country

I have same problem... Help plz

This also happened to me using a Redmi 5 Plus. Yours is whyred, right?

How can I check which panel I have?

Type *#*#6484#*#* in the Xiaomi dialer

Ive got tianma. No image retention.
It does have crappy motion clarity tho. Albeit still much better than redmi note 4.

I had the same problem, I send back my note 5 and bought a Oneplus 6. In 60 min i had already ghosting.
To bad, nice phone but a ghosting is not done for me.
Panel was a tianma td4310.
U can test it by yourself, set it for like 15 min on 1 app and focus on some thing I went back to Twitter night view and I saw some details of the previous app on it.
A shame, the tiamma panels on the note 4 had the same problem aswell.
Maybe I wait for the Mi 8 and trade my oneplus in. But the notch is to big to display notification icons....

Honor 6 Yellow tint ?

I observed that my Honor 6 is more yellowish/warmer tone in the bottom of the display . It is visible on white backgrounds. and even in light grey backgrounds. It is a common issue with Honor 6? I saw some threads for OnePlus One with almost the same issue. How is yours?
It is something like this (it is not a Honor 6 but for example):
haven't got this on my device, maybe its some kind of a hardware problem.
how old is your device?
My device was brand new. I returned him and get a full refund. I tried to put under the UV light but from my opinion make it even worse...
pudup said:
This is an old and known problem. It's on almost every H6 device around right now. I'd say it's on all H6 devices since I can't really trust anybody that says they don't.
Apparently UV light fixes it.

Mine is fine...
But yeah, it's a hardware problem. I'd guess something about the glue discoloring. Apple had the same problem with their iMacs a couple of years ago.
Unfortunately there's no permanent fix, other than replacing the entire screen assembly and hoping the new one doesn't have the same problem. But then again it probably will, unless they changed the manufacturing process to fix this problem.

Grey lines on display

Noticing a kind of very lite shade of greys in white screens irrespective of the brightness. No problem with any other colors. Can’t capture it in a snap. So tried my best to represent it in the image(attached). You can download the image and zoom-in and shake the image in the marked area to clearly see what I’m talking about. Anybody else having this issue? Is it huge issue as I will be working with photographs in the phone?
Just bought the device yesterday. Would be nice if someone can tell me how to convey this to the retailer without making him think that I’m crazy for a replacement.

I have found that all modern high density AMOLED screens have this to some extent. I bought 7 Galaxy S6s and none were perfect, with some better than others. 99% of people won't notice it. And even if you're someone who can notice it, sometimes it takes a couple weeks of owning the phone before you see it, and then once you see it, it's hard to unsee it. It's especially noticeable if you're scrolling and move your eyes up and down the screen with the content as it moves.

I saw it in the first day itself. Expected value for the price paid is not delivered means. It's cheating
Its very common on AMOLED devices unfortunately and my guess is that the vast majority of users cannot see it so lower # of units returned to samsung and they probably will blame it on QA. If a lot of consumers would start to notice it and demand for close to perfect panels then samsung will probably up their AMOLED game.
we bought 3 sgs7 phones all of them have this issue...how can such a company like Samsung do this ...like i cant see that LOL my vission on close distances is verry verry good so thats whay i saw those gray lines in a minute after buying one.i went to see my brothers gs7 after that and of course his one was the same and then after one week my father bought one white version so i thought that the 3rd one has to be a good one but NOPE it was the same story again...im very pissed so i will go to Samsung and tell them about it and will see what will they say...just to let u know guys i had similar problem on xperia z5 but instead of grey lines i had white ones and also some white spots and i send it to waranty and told them about the display issue and they have replaced the screen and now its perfect...so im goin to do that on Samsung aswell. good luck ppl
just to let u know guys i went Samsung and they replaced the screen but those gray lines are visible again so they sad that they cannot fix it and change screen everytime.... it looks like that alot of led panels are baddly constructed in the factory so i decided to return the phone.
I am on my 3rd galaxy S7. The 1st had the SD card connecting and disconnecting. The 2nd one the USB port would no longer transfer data(learned because VR stopped working) I am worried about the build quality of this phone....

I have exactly this same issue and it's driving me nuts! I cannot return my phone now, but it's very noticeable for me those grey lines when some other people I tried to show it couldn't see it...I hate AMOLED displays, I have never had a phone with an AMOLED display which was perfect, all of them always had some issue at some point. From Motorola, other Samsung, Huawei, all of them had some sort of issue with the display.[emoji35]

Replaced once, too. Mine was not a perfect line, like gray dust splattered along a line. Especially visible with grayish flat images, there were clear fluctuations on shade of "gray". Second device is almost perfect. If you look with magnifying glass , there were some pinkish littttle dusty dots on white, but it is really hard to see with naked eye. So happy with second now.
This issue is present because AMOLED screens don't use backlight. Every pixel is emitting light, and my guess is that they aren't distributing the same amount of brightness on every area of the screen.
It's noticable, but as some said to a very small amount of people, and it isn't that much of an issue if u ask me. Bigger issue is that amoled screens burn in over time. I could see my keyboard on white background on my S5 after a year and a half of use. Thank god that s7 has themes so I can change keyboard layouts.
Everything comes with a price... LCD's have their flaws, and so do AMOLED's.
Good news, its just a software bug on Android M, just reflash it to Android N and it will be fixed.

My experience.
Hi all,
I have an unlocked, rooted, Nougat ROM S7 Edge and I have been experiencing the same issue for 3 months.
The only way for me to fixed it is to flash Superman ROM, then the lines disappear. Any other ROM (Elyos, S8 ports, ...): I have the grey lines. A kernel issue?
Cheers.
P.S.: Flicker free kernel used to work with Superman ROM but if I flash it after any other ROM, my phone gets stuck in boot.

The quality of IPS screen on MIX 2s - is it the same as in Mi Note 3?

Hi,
I am almost certain that I will get myself a MIX 2S, but there is one thing that still holds me off - the screen. Does anyone of you know what is the panel installed there? Previously I had Xiaomi MI Note 3 and the screen there had some problems with ghosting which was really annoying when it was cold outside (near 0 Celsius). I wonder if this is the thing with 2S too. Anyone?
No problem with it at all, check the tests it's one of the bests IPS panel available and it's HDR compatible
According to reviews, display on Mix 2s actually worse than display on Mi note 3. It has lower brightness and contrast and has same ghosting issues due to slow pixels: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12992/the-xiaomi-mi-mix-2s-review/4
I have mi note 3 and going to change it for mix, and I prepared for it

About ghosting real users in my country say the same: http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=890942&view=findpost&p=74526483 (it's in russian, you can use google translate)
My Mix 2S screen is horrible. Blur and ghosting every time I swipe or scroll. Real shame as I love everything else about this phone.
I have had dozens & dozens of phones (IPS & AMOLED screens) and I have never had this issue.
Only had phone for just over a week, but I won't be keeping it much longer. It hurts my eyes.
Some people won't even notice it, but I'm very susceptible to this sort of thing.
It has an EXTREMY low pixel refresh rate and tends to blur on whites and blues.

I bought it from eBay and I'm in the UK, so it's a no go for warranty.
It isn't faulty. It's just how they all are. It's the panel Xiaomi have used.
Like I said, some people are more susceptible to it. Some people don't see the blur at all. All eyes are different.

I said from right from the start that some people will be able to see it, when others won't. It's all subjective.
My eyes are extremely susceptible to things like this.
For example, in games, movies & broadcast TV, I can easily see frame rate judder/frame pace errors & refresh rate innacuracies in source material, when most other people can't.
The vast majority of people don't see this at all, but some of us do, and to us, it's awful.
The phone is in no way defective. The panel is just shoddy and is where Xiaomi have cut corners., Which is a shame. I'd rather have less RAM or a slower chipset than have a crappy screen, as this is the thing you have to look at constantly. I'm selling mine and going back to my old phone.
Why doesnt someone develop a kernel to increase the panel frequency? Change io scheduler? And increase display buffers
Yesterday i trade my mix2s for an Amoled Mi8.... TODAY I took my mix2s back!!! JDI makes best ips in world and is "made in japan"! No prob here...
Almost in all.units there are yellowish/grayish discoloration on the lower n part of the screen, but i guess it's normal in lcd screen?
Was to give my OnePlus 5T to my wife as she needs a new phone, but I guess I will get another phone as the screen on the Mix 2S seems to be dimmer and not uniformly...
I'm always very suspicious of posts on XDA where members directly or indirectly plug OnePlus phones. OnePlus is notorious for fake user posts on tech and social media sites.

Strangely enough, I've gone back to my 5t and listed my Mix 2s for sale.
The 5t is far from perfect. The camera is attrotious compared to the Mix 2s but the screen is a million times better.
I genuinely don't care if you're suspicious or not. I tell it like it is.
I owned a One Plus 5 which was an amazingly bad phone. From the poor build quality of the phone itself to the inept coding of Oxygen and the firmware I never owned a phone that I hated more.
So why is it every few days someone feels the need to post how much they prefer their One Plus phones in the Xiaomi threads? It's disrespectful to go into the MI Mix 3 thread and say this phone sucks I'm going back to One Plus.
If yours was the first post I saw like that it wouldn't raise a red flag but I see very similar posts regularly.
One Plus sales and promotion tactics include planting fake user posts and comments on tech and social media sites. I'm not saying that your post is fake but it definitely falls very squarely into the pattern of their fake posts which criticize a competing company and praise One Plus devices as being superior.

Oppo Find X2 Pro display issue

Hello, does anyone have a problem with green tint on Oppo the same as OnePlus 8 pro have. Interesting i had OnePlus 8 pro and have problems with green tint
I have sam problem with my Oppo Find X2 Pro. First didn't believe but after realised that have same problem. I bought another one and much lower but still exists. That can be noticeable on Chrome dark theme on 10-15% level brightness
No I am ok with my CPH2025 UAE model.
No Problem here too CPH2025 EU
Very strange,i am glad that you don't have any issue,my device is EU model from Germany, both of them have same problem. First one have much more issue than this one. Both of them i unpack, new sealed...at day light it's hard to see but you must be in absolute dark environment and open Chrome, dark mode, close all tabs and bring device to 10-15% brightness. And watch carefully display colour. Is it all grey or have some variations to another colour, somewhere lighter somewhere darker?

Agree man. But i am wondering is there any device without that problem i will get it ???. But if all are effected it's ok than.
Everyone that tells you that they don't have an issue are either lying or ignorant. Also you think it's bad now? Turn on DC Dimming (Low-brightness flicker-free eye comfort) and then have a look ?
OP8/Pro and Find X2/Pro have the same Samsung display, even S20 variants and Note20 have the same grey low brightness uniformity issue it just depends how well they hide it. Supposedly the technology for AMOLED screens isn't up to par to keep the quality consistent at 120 Hz refresh rate. Now don't misunderstand me - it isn't right and I don't feel like playing silicon lottery with my 1000€ device and if someone gets proof the issue is here because of cutting costs I'm all for class action lawsuit/forcing them to make a new and better batch but so far it seems like we're part of a screen "beta" test. Still the calibration seems better on the Oppo flagship so get that one if you don't mind the locked bootloader and find a lower priced model.

Display question/discussion

Have a Note 9 which I'm keeping, just got the Ultra and the display is a disappointment.
Side by side with the 9, colors are not as vibrant, contrast is so-so, sharpness is off. Fine details, icon edges, etc. are fuzzy.
Now, I'm anal about this kinda stuff. If I never saw the 9's screen, I'd never know and think it's fine, and to most, it would be. But this is me you're talkin' to. ?
I don't know whether to return it or pray for a Samsung fix. I'm not a gambling man. I've gone through every display setting and resolution there is, including dev options. I'm pretty experienced.
Maybe it's Nova launcher, but it's just not as nice as the 9's screen. Exact same home screen, icon theme, everything identical.
Your thoughts/opinions/gut feelings? Got till next week to return to Best Buy.
Thanks a lot,
Rich
You're 100% right, my N20U has a yellowish dirty white look to it when compared to my N10+
I doubt Samsung sees this as a defect until all of us report it as a defect so they can fix it with a software update.
Using vivid mode with green slider turned to lower setting helps but that's about it...

I posted in another thread that I got an app - Screen Balance - from the play store. With that I was able to get rid of more green as it has several adjustments for white balance. Use various adjustments judiciously. I like things cool. Seems *all* amoleds look green to me anyway.
Lest anyone thinks I'm spamming the app, since I mentioned it in another thread, I am not. Just a much happier user. ?
Doesn't solve the aforementioned problems though.
My gripe is temporary image retention. Using dark mode and gray screens, sometimes, the outline of the keyboard will remain on the screen for 5-10 seconds. I notice that if one uses the phone in light mode, it seems perfect, but once in dark mode, it has some minor flaws.
It's funny to see so many of these posts popping up. I made a post about this before as well that the screen has an overall yellowish greenish overtone to it. In fact, mine got worse. Now I have screen burn in. It's crazy since I don't have my phone at high brightness. It's somewhere in the middle. This is the first time I have to have a screen replaced. I miss my note 9 so much. If the note 9 had an ultra wide camera, I would so have kept it. This is likely the most problematic note I've owned. I had 3 note ultra in the past and they are all the same in terms of display. There's no escaping it. If you call the Samsung costumer service, they aren't allowed to admit issues with the device that Samsung hasn't cleared for them to admit, so they'll deny any screen issues at this time. I was going to trade this in for the Oneplus 8 pro, but they aren't taking Note 20 ultras as a trade in device, so may still sell or try to hold on till S21 ultra and pray by then Samsung corrects this new line of Amoled screens.
This is the screen burn in that I have unfortunately. Going to get the screen replaced, hopefully this weekend.

Burn-in does not show in screenshots, It will only be visible on your device as it is the physical screen with the damage

Then it's a mystery what that anomaly is. I am not the only one as a member in another forum posted similar. Image retention maybe? I don't know. But whatever it is, it's not going away and the Samsung phone techs agree I need to change the screen. Hopefully the new one doesn't do this.

Oh geezzzz...that:s not encouraging.. looks like I'm holding on hoping for a soft/firmware update. A replacement would probly have the same or worse issue. No burn in here so far.
Definitely keeping my note 9!

Your screenshot looks clear to me on my PC, so if you are seeing burn-in then it will be on your screen and will need a replacement, what I was saying is you cannot send someone a SS to show them the burn-in, they would need to look at your screen with their eyes

Hahaha lol I just realized the error of my ways
I've never had such screen anomalies before. Still can't understand how it got there since I don't keep my phone at max brightness. Guess I got unlucky this time around.

Same image on the screen for extended periods can cause it too, so if you're always in WhatsApp chat or Facebook app and the same thing is always on the screen you'll be more likely to see it then too

Yeah i used to worry a lot about this as i know there are batches of screens that have this problem. Initially i thought the green yellow tint problem was also in some batches esp when Display mate gave this screen such high rating, which means they are all who have sold their souls for money and not honest, so thought mine was a bad batch but it seems everyone has this tint issue. Its sad that you have burn in but its more common than you think. Many people got it with the Samsung View case too.

Yeah, pretty unfortunate. I did see the issues with the Samsung cases causing the burn in as well. What's funny is that if you speak to a supervisor at the Samsung customer service number and tell them about the screen issues and you have someone else with a Samsung phone call them back hours or a day later and get the same supervisor, they'll tell you that they never had one complaint about the screen. Unless Samsung instructs them it's an issue they can fix, they will not admit it. Still hoping Samsung can correct the yellowish greenish overtone of the general display.
