Regular or XL...coming from a Mate 9 - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

Hey Guys,
I'm still using my Mate 9 which actually still works great and the battery goes for a couple days maybe 1.5 days with heavy usage but since I'm on Android 9(after hacking it to get it) there is zero support and the camera is just so so. I see the regular 3a and the XL are only .4"(5.6 vs 6.0) difference in screen size. Has anyone here compared them to see if there really is much of a difference? Maybe I'll walk into Best Buy and see if they have both. Seems to be the best priced Android for the money. I see it on ebay for $230 for refurbished ones. I like my 5.9" screen but 5.6" is pretty darn close.

Its the same phone. The only differences are screen and battery size. If you care about battery buy the xl

Thank you. I did some more reading and they were tested side by side and the XL lasted 15 minutes less than the regular one so the larger screen probably makes the battery last the same so it's a moot point I guess. It comes down to mainly just screen size, resolution a little, and weight a little. I'll check them both out and see what feels the best.

Take a look at the battery threads here on forum, I would say that xl has a better battery life

Sell Htc one & get Nexus 5?

1.is it worth hassle
2. is the snapdragon 800 that much better than the 600
3
I plan on doing it myself. More developments, because bigger screen, better camera, stock UI, better battery thanks to the 800 chip and wireless charging as well.

Yes, yes, ... yes?
I went from a One to the G2. The S800 is WORLDS faster than the 600. Battery life is also not even comparable.
Most definitely worth it.
I do miss the speakers and feel of the One, that unibody is so amazing. Everything else though more than made up for it. I suspect the N5 will be no different and will probably be even faster thanks to AOSP/KitKat.
the 800 is way better, im selling my htc one, already ordered my N5, the only thing that worries me about the nexus are the speakers =(
800 is way better. If you listen to music on your phone, you'll have the benefits as well.
To address the latter issue, Google has introduced audio tunneling to DSP in Android 4.4. The premise is simple - instead of using the application processor to decode audio or respond to audio output requests, this responsibility is offloaded to the onboard DSP (digital signal processor). The DSP is much more efficient at such tasks than the CPU, and as such, Google estimates that the amount of power used playing back audio on your phone could decrease in excess of 50%! That's pretty impressive. In a local playback test (that is, non-streamed audio), the Nexus 5 extended its playback time from 30 hours without DSP tunneling to 60 hours with the new feature enabled.

Assuming you use headphones. Listening to music on the speakers will be a huge let down compared to One

It's not close. It looks like the N5 is the same as the G2. In which case I can tell you first hand it takes a little re-adjusting to go back to mediocre common phone speakers after the One. They aren't terrible, its on par with most other top smartphones, but no where near the One. Quality and Volume are both pretty meh. Volume fix helped a lot but quality still suffers badly.

Anything can be fixed with Viper4Android using that on my N4 and music sounds great. Nevertheless, the battery consumption reduced is really nice.

haha yeah that will be awesome out on the bike, look forward to that. Granted the G2 lasts forever anyway, but still.
Viper4Android made a huge improvement to the G2 for sure, but still "meh" when compared to the One. it's not really a fair comparison anyway though, it is unlikely many/any smartphones will ever compete with that, sad fact.

but thats a feature of Android 4.4 which the htc one will be getting withing the next two weeks.
is the snapdragon 800 the only thing that the nexus 5 has on the Htc one?
I've got the S4 similar boat I've ordered one to test it out on the credit card. GPE editions are going to be updated soon so its a tough call.

I was not planing on getting a Nexus 5 but I smashed the screen on my HTC One. HTC wants a little over $200 to fix the screen so I'm just going with the Nexus 5 instead. Any idea how much I could get for a black HTC One with cracked screen?

This is exactly the same reason as to why I've ordered a Nexus 5 myself, now the camera on the N5 isn't going to be mind-blowingly amazing but at least I won't see a ridiculous purple tint in half my photos.
Legitimately, the only real thing I'll miss from the HTC One are the speakers. I'd argue that I'd miss Sense 5.5 but N5 is going to be stock Android, that's as good as it gets.
I would of sold any phone just to get the N5. Just to get updates fast is nice from google.
Mine's on eBay right now. It's a good phone and I will definitely miss the front facing speakers, but I'm sure this will be worth it. If not, I can always go back to the One or just get the next version of the One in 6 months.
Not to be alarmist, but I hope HTC is still around in 6 months.

Are you planning to buy LG V20

so LG announced that the V20 is going to be unveiled at 6 September
the title is Play More i think it mean a bigger battery
and there is rumors that it will contain 6 Gb of ram
in my opinon V20 will be a cool phone but i will not buy for my personal reason that there is like 0 developement for The V series and many models that can't be unlocked
So let's discuss if you are planning to buy it or no and why
leaked image today from evleaks if it is true i think the V10 is better looking
new leaked image
I probably won't because I'm kinda disappointed with V10
- The Duraskin is not durable at all, my back cover is already pealed off from 8 different points.
- You make a giant phone but the battery life is mediocre
- You make a "pro" phone without bootloader/root support
- The performance is getting slower and I started to get micro stutters after few months of usage

i hope that LG will learn of their mistakes because it will be a fail after the problems that cause that the LG G5 is not success
I love my V10 and I haven't had it all that long... So it depends on what they do with it.
If they add...
4000mah battery? If it's still removable that would be seriously tempting!
Front facing speakers? More temptation!
If it's a decent improvement in any way I'm going to be very strongly considering using my jump on demand and getting it ASAP.
That's saying a lot for me because it would be the first time I ever didn't keep a phone! I came from my precious beloved Note 2 which I used from release day until last October when I got my V10.
I don't know how people just trade their phones in or sell them.... I'm a hoarder.
But I tell you.... I'm watching for any news and leaks on this thing and I'm obsessed! I hope they don't mess it up.
I gotta say one thing here though... I don't see anyone speculating on this but in the animated announcement where the script says "play more"
Am I the only one who thinks that they way they drew that out looks like someone using a phone with a.... **stylus** wrote it? Why make the point to animate the actual writing out of a word?
Anywho.... That's probably out of the question but it just strikes me that way...
I'm off to refresh my Google search page in hopes of finding new leaks or rumors!

I love my V10, much more reliable than any of the Samsungs I had before, up to S5, fast, best looking, best camera, best screen, (had to tone down amoled, wrong colours), nicest launcher, Smart Launcher, etc...

So why did lg remove bootloader
Based off the leak on reddit today im hoping v20 is better than note 5
Well if current info is good i will probably not upgrade. Main new features seem to be the bigger battery and much more powerful chipset inside. Both are important but not really a problem for me in V10. Battery life on my V10 is between 2 and 4 days (most of the time 2 to 3 days) and due to the quick charge i can easily charge my phone for just 1 hour and even minutes of charge give several more hours of usage. About the chipset power - well i do not play heavy games and regarding multimedia (including 4K video) and other heavy load frankly my V10 works very well. Android 6.0 together with the 4GB of ram works really well and i do not have any problems with the software. I also do not need to root my phone so bootloader issue is irrelevant for me. Camera of V10 is one of the best on the smartphone market especially the video. Sound is superb with the hifi DAC (very important for me) and i do not see how V20 will improve on that. For me at least there is no need to upgrade now and i hope to get android 7 for V10 in the autumn and keep using it for at least one more year or even more before i look for new phone.
Funny enough the Nexus 5x is manufactured by lg.
I think the software issues are the fact there hasn't been much of 3rd party development on the phone and that its been a pain to get rooted.
I would upgrade to the v20 if they allowed more customized usage of the second screen, improved battery life (amoled screen please?) and added a stylus (I think the v series would make a good stylus model and would further differentiate from its g series brother).
Otherwise I will probably upgrade to the note 7 or wait for the 8 to come out. I kind of miss the stylus from the note series.
My first real smartphone was a Galaxy S2, after that I had an HTC Butterfly which at the time was the first 5 Inch phone. Then I bought a Note 3 and now I have the V10. To be honest I am not a freak and high demanding but for me there is not so much difference between the HTC the Note 3 or this phone other then a better camera and some features like fingerprint scanner and dual screen etc. This phones integrated DAC pulled me over to buy it. I have been reading about the V20, can't find a good reason for an upgrade. Bought a second battery and a dock on ebay for under 20 Dollar so the thing what I experienced as **** has been resolved. So no!
From the videos of lg v20 on lgusa instagram.,i think the button at side of phone for camera shutter and/not for modular..may be it will have double usage

Exactly Spot On!
Battery life was horrible enough to live with, also performance getting slower and getting micro/lag stutters (Nova Prime helps a bit). My Sony Xperia Z3 Dual SIM was already razor fast and they made even faster with last few updates. It had a slow camera which Sony fixed.
LG has the better cameras but the app launch and switching between modes is painful. I literally keep it 100% charged. Wife has an LG G4, similar slowness.
The performance slowdown was the final straw, will switch to Note 7 Dual SIM by next Jan.

Pixel or PixelXL?

Hi,
In the past I've used a Galaxy S2 and S4, moved to a Note 4 and MotoX Pure Edition and am now considering moving back to a smaller form factor (such as the Pixel) as overall the ergonomics are better (easier to use with one hand).
My main concern though is that the Pixel has a smaller battery than the Pixel XL, so battery life should be less, and I do like the battery life that bigger phones offer (with moderate use I only need to charge my current MotoX every other day).
I was in a Verizon store yesterday and held both in hand and the Pixel XL is actually slightly larger than my current MotoX, and that's without a case! And for some reason, the Pixel felt snappier than the Pixel XL, but they were both demo phones with their screens on 24/7 so I don't know if that affected things.
Still, battery life is somewhat important, but overall prefer the size of the Pixel.
What do you guys think, is the trade-off in battery life worth it? I know I'll need to make up my own mind in the end, but would still like to hear your thoughts
And either way I'll be buying through the Google store, as for me there would be no price difference in buying through Verizon or Google, so might as well not deal with the hassle of not being able to easily unlock the bootloader down the road (not sure if I want to go down that route anymore for security reasons, eventhough I've rooted every Android phone I've owned so far, but would like to have that option).
Go for the normal pixel. The screen resolution being lower at FullHD will offset the battery gains for the most part. But performance will be slightly higher on the pixel in comparison to the Pixel XL. Minor but still noticeable in certain situations.
The pixel feeling faster may be placebo, did you make sure everything was cleared in background from all the previous people playing with them?
Could also be pushing things around the smaller screen is less taxing to the cpu/gpu, maybe.
Both screens look great, but its 1080 to 1440.
---------- Post added at 11:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:52 AM ----------
There is a price difference between Verizon and Google and if you buy it on Best Buy.
Currently Verizon has several promos which may or may not apply to you depending on if you're going to be using them as a provider and have any phones to trade in. They also have them in stock. Google is preorder with delivery between 12-19 of December.
Best Buy's also offers $100 to $200 and free Chromecast
Ordered both, coming from a Note 4. Though the XL was very similar size to my Note 4 the Pixel's metal body is very slippery. I found it much harder to hang on to than my Note 4. Ended up sending it back and keeping the regular size Pixel. However the XL comes with some advantages, mainly the battery life and the display density if you plan to use Daydream VR. My regular Pixel battery life is not amazing, averaging around 3.5 hours SOT over the course of a day. The XL seemed to do 5.5 reliably. Though I love the form factor of the regular. Wish there was a middle size to go with (5.25 inch with a 3100mah battery).

I'm currently already a Verizon subscriber. Trading in my phone with them would give me $200. Selling my phone on Swappa would net me about the same (but I'll probably keep my phone as a backup phone as I currently only have 1 phone). I'm not willing to go on a 2 year contract, so my only option is a device payment plan, for which the monthly cost is the same as buying it through Google with 0% financing (only downside there is that it goes on your credit report, vs. Verizon where it doesn't show up on your credit report, but I can live with that).
Best Buy also only seems to sell the 32GB version, and I definitely want 128GB as these phones don't have SD cards (I actually use the space).
So in my particular situation, the price is essentially the same, so might as well go with the Google store version which has an unlockable bootloader.

A middle size would indeed be ideal, but 3.5hrs SOT seems reasonable enough to me.
I am on the fence also about which one will be permanent phone. I am concerned with the battery life of the regular pixel, but like it for its size. If the pixel xl will have continuously better battery life than i would go with that. My current phone has a extended battery and love it and these non removable batteries worry me. I do have a regular pixel coming but was told that i could try it out for 14 days and if i didn't like it, i could return it, but then would have to order the pixel xl and play the waiting game again. This waiting over a month is really nonsense for a phone, Google should have anticipated this and made preparations.

Reasonable but not amazing. I suspect that something is a miss as my standby battery use seems higher than it should be. I've been experimenting to figure out if there is an issue or this is just how it is. Standby drain is erratic, has been amazing on occasion and other times terrible (had it go dead overnight twice, definitely a run away app of some sort). Since I have on occasion had excellent standby drain it would seem that this condition should be attainable regularly instead of just incidentally and occasionally, but up till now I have not been able to determine what conditions lead to this (did not have to disable radios and features to get this).

Not yet, this will be my last resort, was hoping I could fix it without a reset. If nothing else prevails then I will reset. It is possible that I am chasing after nothing at all as well, this may just be characteristics of the phone.
I ended up ordering the regular pixel yesterday mainly because the 128gb model would be available to me this week, and the XL wouldn't be available until next month. Also I actually prefer a smaller phone, lately every single phone has been a fight for the biggest screen and I feel like I've been forced into getting a phone that is way toof big. I remember being completely satisfied with the 4.8 inch screen on my Droid razr. So going back to a smaller phone from the giant s7edge is a welcoming feeling to me. The size difference is only a half inch so it really isn't much screen real estate but the smaller model feels so much better to hold.

Vzw bootloader is currently unlocked-able, but I understand and reason I went with Google Store as well, less hassle future proof.
I ended up cancelling my blk xl 128gb order just now, sticking with blue xl (I carry a usbc microsd adapter otg w 200gb card)
The regular Pixel is just a dream for everyday use. The ease in the hand and pocket is liberating. The display real estate issue was overcome in the first day of ownership. It now fits in places my Nexus 6P never did and due to it being lighter, smaller and feeling more durable, I realised I worry less about it too.

photo processing speed vs pixel 3

The photo taking capability of the Pixels is one of the biggest features. 3a has a slower cpu and (unconfirmed?) lack of Pixel Visual Core.
Did anyone compared a reallife photo processing speed between 3 and 3a? How long the 3a takes to save a photo, in the night mode especially?
Is it just a matter of process speed or will the 3 and 3xl produce superior photos compared to the 3a series?
When I was playing with a 3a XL at Best Buy, it seemed to take 3-4 seconds to process a picture - including night mode. If I took a picture and immediately opened it in the gallery, I would see the progress circle moving to completion. I don't have access to a 3 or 3xl to compare it to, but I suspect it is near immediate processing with the pixel visual core. I should also note that the camera is available to take more pictures immediately - you don't need to wait for the image to be processed before taking another picture.
So while there is a small delay processing pictures with the 3a or 3a XL, it is neither annoyingly long, nor does it prevent normal usage of the phone/camera. Honestly it will hardly be noticeable in normal operation IMHO.

It's my understanding that it is simply a difference in processing speed. The pictures with the rear camera are identical to the 3 series.
Of course the front facing selfie camera is different from the original 3 series, so the images from the 3a front camera are slightly different (or at least harder to compare) from the original, but the photo quality is nearly identical with the front camera too.

I did have the 3a for a few hours last week but ended up sending it back. The phone felt very cheap in my hands, camera was marginally better than my s9. All in all i felt the phone was from 2014 with a 2019 camera

Really? You thought it felt cheap? I don't get that impression at all. Feels nice to me. I don't like my phone's to be made of metal and glass. Plastic feels nice.

Let's not forget the fact that because the back isn't glass, you don't need a super bulky case to protect it.
When people say it feels cheap I respect their opinion but I personally think that it doesn't feel cheap at all, not even close. It actually feels really nice. Out of all the items that are made of plastic that I've used before, this is really good plastic. It's not low-quality plastic, this kind of plastic is beautifully smooth and you can tell it's very good quality.
I mean let's be fair here, not all plastics are created equal.
Some people put the 3a down because it doesn't have the best glass body/metal, a slower Snapdragon, no water resistance, etc.
However, If you want all those features on a brand NEW phone for $400 dollars then you live in a dreamland and need a reality check.
If you want all those features then go ahead and shell out the cash for a Pixel 3, or whatever else is in the market. It's not the 3a's fault.
The 3a is not the best phone out there, it's not trying to be. The amazing camera, screen, performance, quality, and the vanilla Google experience is great value for its price.
This phone is a very good phone for what it is. I'm personally very happy with my purchase, and I haven't been this excited about a phone in a long time.

It wasnt so much that though, the phone looked really nice and felt light and felt nostalgic holding a phone without glass and metal. But i was buying it to replace my s9+ so I was comparing it on that in which case obviously the s9+ will win. But it seemed to me they made too many cut backs. Audio quality sounded average. I checked in call speaker and too much sound leaked out. I also had some glitches whenever i clicked battery settings the settings app would force close. Also the snapdragin 660. I get it mid range and all that. But the fact is the 660 came out mid 2018 since then weve had the 670 and the newer 2019 710. So my 2 cents were if google want to make a mid range phone in 2019, then use mid range 2019 hardware and not give people a year out of date phone already. Its £400 in the UK and $400 dollars in the US. Makes no sense. If that phone was £250-300 I would have nothing to moan about. However for 400 you can get many top ranged phones 2nd hand.

You do know this phone comes with a snapdragon 670, correct?
Also, people keep complaining that they want a cheaper Google phone. Them one comes out they complain that it costs too much. This would have been the case if it cost $250. It would have been, "yeah it's nice but for $250??? I would have loved to see it cost $75 with all the corners they cut."
I'm enjoying this device immensely so far. Checks a ton of boxes for me. I use it to check email, make calls and limited social media. I am not a heavy gamer. Apps load quickly, battery lasts me through almost 2 days, screen looks beautiful, I thought sound was ok out of the box but it is worlds better after installing viper.
Good luck with your s9. I'm going to sit here and enjoy my 3a.

My bad 670. Oh well still a newer 710. Enjoy your phone. I may change my mind. Have to see how the development scene turns out. But with no lineage for pixel 3 or 2 series im not that optimistic.
I can say this about the processing speed, it processes night sight faster than the pixel 2xl and takes better pictures

99% of smartphones are released with outdated chipsets. There's ALWAYS a newer one. It takes time to develop and sell a phone based on the most up-to-date chipsets, which means by release time, the next one is coming out.
Most phones have > 12mo planning phase

Yeah thats true. Im thinking about getting it again tbh. Just gonna wait a couple months and see how development is going. The new issue about the misaligned ports. Dont think i bothered to look when I had it. See someone in here saying he was having to send back his 2nd replacement.
I prefer glass and metal but come on... 3a isn't cheap at all. It's a very beautiful phone.

Should I buy Pixel 3 now?

Hi,
I love the images the Pixel 3 takes, and the front speakers.
I read a lot of compliments on the device, were those issues fixed? should I buy a Pixel 3?
(I know that the Pixel 4 launch is imminent, I am looking for a 600 USD price tag)
I came from a Nexus 5 and ran that thing into the ground before finally purchasing this device.
My view is this,
It's the best phone I could buy for the money. I paid $600.
I have a few quirks with available ROMs and Android pie, however I'm confident Android 10+ and TWRP devs will come around and relieve a lot of these things. They're invaluable for the pixel series.
I know deals are just around the corner and I suggest looking for $500 or less. Be patient. They'll happen pretty soon, keep your eye out.
Stay far away from Verizon since you can't unlock bootloader.
Disable wifi calling from your phone application if you have call quality issues.
OLED screen shows ghosting effect when pixels change from black to white too quickly. This was especially annoying for me for the first couple of months, but I've adjusted surprisingly well since then.
Every complaint you've heard about the Pixel 3 is typically a software issue. Everything this device supports and the hardware packed into it is amazing.
Front speakers were a big reason I bought the phone too! It's the only reason I prefer this over the pixel 4. Haha
I hope this helps you along with your decision and you're happy with whatever you purchase.

The Pixel 3 is currently $499 direct from Google. The Pixel 3 XL is currently $599. This is a $300 discount as the Pixel 4s are coming out next month. I jumped on this at the beginning of the month and bought both for my wife and I. We too had the Nexus 5 for a long time until switching to the LG G6 2 years ago. I normally don't switch phones after 2 years but this was too good to pass up. Also we are on Google Fi and these work perfectly with it.
I bought the 3 (non-XL) about two months ago when Google sent out the $300 off coupons. Had been on the Pixel 1 (non-XL) before that but the battery on that phone was starting to show its age.
I've been thrilled with the 3, and the update to Android 10 improved it even more. Let me know if you have specific questions, but I think it is a completely viable purchase at this stage of the game.
So I bought the device
Now it has Android 9, and due to the posts here I think I should wait before updating to Android 10
Mmmm, I'm also considering buying the Pixel 3 atm. But I have only one concern: battery life. What's your experience? Is it possible to use the phone for more than one day, with mediocre use?

The first Android 10 had some issues but Google did an update earlier this month. I haven't found any serious issues.

I don't have a problem with mine lasting a full day. You could consider the Pixel 3XL instead which has a larger batter and screen. I bought that for my wife and now wish I had bought one for myself. It's not as big as I had expected.

Thanks for your quick reply! But one of the reasons I'm considering the Pixel 3 (and not the 3a for example) is the compact size. How much juice do you have at the end of the day? More than 30 percent?
It varies. I find it seems to use a lot of juice just sitting there, but I usually have more than 30% at the end of the day. I am not on it for an hour at a time, just checking things now and then.

I heard a lot of negative things about the battery life, so before purchasing my pixel 3 a month ago I was dubious; especially consider I owned a pixel 3xl at launch.
Anyhow, all I can say is I'm very surprised. It's got even better since android 10 came out. I get 5.5-6.5hrs screen on time a day, and everything is stock. So that's good enough for me.
Same here, very happy with my pixel 3. got it on a steal at best buy for $399
I have a Note 10 that I have until tomorrow to return. Thinking of grabbing the Pixel 3 to save some money. Battery isn't the best on the Note and I don't really use the S-pen.
Good idea or should I stick with the Note?
Having used Samsung and Pixel, I'll take a Pixel over any Samsung phone, based on the software and support experience. At the current $300 discount Pixel is a great option.
I'd say it depends on the price. If it's US$400-500, I'd say "Get it.", but if it's $600 or over, look for a better deal.
Having now seen the Pixel 4... if you can get a good deal on a Pixel 3 go for it. I don't see much benefit from the newer phone (except a year more security update support).
