Sell Htc one & get Nexus 5? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1.is it worth hassle
2. is the snapdragon 800 that much better than the 600
3

I plan on doing it myself. More developments, because bigger screen, better camera, stock UI, better battery thanks to the 800 chip and wireless charging as well.

Yes, yes, ... yes?
I went from a One to the G2. The S800 is WORLDS faster than the 600. Battery life is also not even comparable.
Most definitely worth it.
I do miss the speakers and feel of the One, that unibody is so amazing. Everything else though more than made up for it. I suspect the N5 will be no different and will probably be even faster thanks to AOSP/KitKat.

the 800 is way better, im selling my htc one, already ordered my N5, the only thing that worries me about the nexus are the speakers =(

800 is way better. If you listen to music on your phone, you'll have the benefits as well.
To address the latter issue, Google has introduced audio tunneling to DSP in Android 4.4. The premise is simple - instead of using the application processor to decode audio or respond to audio output requests, this responsibility is offloaded to the onboard DSP (digital signal processor). The DSP is much more efficient at such tasks than the CPU, and as such, Google estimates that the amount of power used playing back audio on your phone could decrease in excess of 50%! That's pretty impressive. In a local playback test (that is, non-streamed audio), the Nexus 5 extended its playback time from 30 hours without DSP tunneling to 60 hours with the new feature enabled.

Assuming you use headphones. Listening to music on the speakers will be a huge let down compared to One

It's not close. It looks like the N5 is the same as the G2. In which case I can tell you first hand it takes a little re-adjusting to go back to mediocre common phone speakers after the One. They aren't terrible, its on par with most other top smartphones, but no where near the One. Quality and Volume are both pretty meh. Volume fix helped a lot but quality still suffers badly.

Anything can be fixed with Viper4Android using that on my N4 and music sounds great. Nevertheless, the battery consumption reduced is really nice.

haha yeah that will be awesome out on the bike, look forward to that. Granted the G2 lasts forever anyway, but still.
Viper4Android made a huge improvement to the G2 for sure, but still "meh" when compared to the One. it's not really a fair comparison anyway though, it is unlikely many/any smartphones will ever compete with that, sad fact.

but thats a feature of Android 4.4 which the htc one will be getting withing the next two weeks.
is the snapdragon 800 the only thing that the nexus 5 has on the Htc one?

I've got the S4 similar boat I've ordered one to test it out on the credit card. GPE editions are going to be updated soon so its a tough call.

I was not planing on getting a Nexus 5 but I smashed the screen on my HTC One. HTC wants a little over $200 to fix the screen so I'm just going with the Nexus 5 instead. Any idea how much I could get for a black HTC One with cracked screen?

This is exactly the same reason as to why I've ordered a Nexus 5 myself, now the camera on the N5 isn't going to be mind-blowingly amazing but at least I won't see a ridiculous purple tint in half my photos.
Legitimately, the only real thing I'll miss from the HTC One are the speakers. I'd argue that I'd miss Sense 5.5 but N5 is going to be stock Android, that's as good as it gets.

I would of sold any phone just to get the N5. Just to get updates fast is nice from google.

Mine's on eBay right now. It's a good phone and I will definitely miss the front facing speakers, but I'm sure this will be worth it. If not, I can always go back to the One or just get the next version of the One in 6 months.

Not to be alarmist, but I hope HTC is still around in 6 months.

is anybody else torn between one x and int gs3

Things i love
display its amazing had the galaxy note with pentile no comparison
LTE
SENSE
THE PHONE IT SELF LOOKS GREAT
WORRIED THAT WHEN THE INT VERSION OF GS3 COMES OUT I WILL BE KICKING MYSELF
nope, not one bit. I'm not even going to get into CPU specs as they are all amazing at this point. I did wait to order my One X until I saw what Samsung was coming with, but one look at that phone and I immediately ordered my One X.
I for one love what HTC has done with sense on this phone and it kills touchwiz by far in my opinion. Also I think the looks of the One X far and away are more refined then the samsung.
I have been using an original iPhone (yes original edge speed) before getting my One X. I have never needed nor wanted to swap my battery or did I ever need a micro SD, so for me personally, I couldn't be happier.
my problem is i think i have OCD when it comes to gadget............
I waited till the GS3 launch before getting the One X. But I just don't see any way of not returning this and waiting to compare them in person. The phones are so different it will be easy to make the wrong decision if you're on the fence at all.
The One X is a fantastic phone and I'm grateful that we have to such great options to choose from, but there are a couple things that I don't care for that affect usability in a big way. I too am afraid the GS3 will release and I'll immediately regret it. Most, including myself, had a terrible reaction to the Samsung, but it's been growing on me.
One X:
-Build is just ridiculously good. Even more so since it's plastic and durable.
-Stunning screen. I doubt the GS3 will be as good.
-Sense 4.0 is just great. Touchwiz will certainly blow in comparison, but this is Android so that's less of an issue.
-Polycarbonte body. Texture feels great. Nothing shows on the white model.
-Screen seems to be fingerprint proof.
GS3:
-One X is not the easiest phone to use one handed because of the size. GS3 has rounded edges which look like it'll allow better reach. I'm just barely able to reach the corners on the One X, so this may bring it into the comfort zone.
-Generally the shape seems to sit in the hand very well from what I've seen and read.
-Power button on the side is so much better than the top in the One X.
-I am severely ocd about fingerprint/oil accumulation and the GS3 couldn't be worse in this regard. Hopefully there will be some decent replacement rear covers available.
Don't care about the microsd or removable battery (though hopefully the One X battery will be durable in the long term). It's the finer details that affect everyday usability that will win me over.
i was also waiting for the gs3 announcement before ordering my hox.my factors were...
16gb internal is fine for me...
and the onex is sexier imo..
really comes down to preference...also after owning htcs and sammys i still prefer htc for that "quality" feel...
but thats just me :-D and im still waiting for my hix to get here...ugh!

no regrets here (other than at&t's performance) the HTC One X is a very solid device. the S3 is a bit underwhelming honestly. they did some neat things and clever tricks, but in the end the One X is simply a work of art and the S3 feels more like a gimmick to me. at least from what i'm reading of course not having it in hand.
not since we got root and s-off on the way
before that, the sIII was on my mind.
I'm not torn at all. The SGS3 is an ugly piece of crap, and as it's been stated before. "A handset designed by lawyers."
Dat back? It's flexible plastic? Ugh. Gross. Are you kidding me? I don't care how much storage it has, etc. It's ugly. Pentile screen? Are you kidding me? What is this 2003?
Ugh. Gross. I have unlimited data, so I'll stick with One X and be happy at my more industrial design, better build quality, etc.
i will return before my 30 day window expires get iphone 4s sell and buy the gs3 .....then i will make my decision ...... but so far its the best phone i ever had

What is s-off
I waited until the S3 announcement. Once I saw unpacked I decided that the One X has taken the crown.
The one x is the most beautiful handset ever in my opinion. As far as looks go, one x hands down. BUT... The Galaxy S3 will outperform the one x even if they have similar specs. Samsung has always done a better job with drivers and optimizing things. If you want a great user experience, the Galaxy S3 is the clear winner to me. Lag free, smooth as butter, fast and lots of new features.

In a nutshell, S-OFF means that the NAND portion of the device is unlocked and can be written to. The default setting for HTC’s devices is S-ON, which means that neither can you access certain areas of the system nor can you guarantee a permanent root. Furthermore, signature check for firmware images is also ensured by the S-ON flag.

Battery life should be better since it'll be coming with a 21,000 battery as opposed to the 18,000 of the one X. Still on the wall about this phone. Kinda tired of touchwiz and samsung and want a new experience. HTC not having a memory card slot is killer for me. Might join sprint since the EVO ONE has way better specs.
Buy first, decide later
Nope, no led notification light still? Even a small one like the htc one would suffice but nothing? They arent listening to consumers.

anyways, i have to disagree with you.
samsung's touchwiz is very well known for being laggy, also samsung is terrible about updates (infuse just got official gingerbread the other day....)
as far as asthetics alone, the One X is quite sexy, gs3 not so much.

Note 3 disappointing

Is it me, or is anyone else disappoint the Note 3? In particular the external audio speaker quality?
I find it very toppy /trebly, lacking bass or even mid range.
When compared to my Note 2,its clear the 3 is a few steps backwards to my ears.
Also, I find the back gets sweaty quickly, the phone feels quite cheap, is actually too light, and my home button is quite click.
Hate to moan, but it just cost me £620, it's in its box and I'm back on my Note 2.
Anyone else share these opinions?
Let speaker and home button break in. Or send it back.
I don't have mine yet. I am guessing that if you're coming from a Note 2 that this is just an incremental upgrade for you and you want everything on your Note 3 to be better to justify the price.
I am coming from a GNex. I am sure everything will be an upgrade for me.

Its more likely "value for money" that's your issue,
You bought early & paid alot, Panamoz have them for under £500 & even that is too much in my opinion but i still might buy one.
Anyway .. old phones speakers get muffled very slightly over time with dust particles & use, I've always found them sharper when new & particularly as you are often testing at high volume.
That home button! i always hated it on my Notes & i hate it so much i NEVER use it.

Sell it and buy a phone with software buttons such as Sony Z1 or LG g2. For me, it's the opposite, note3 is an upgrade over note2 in every way. It's the first samsung phone that actually feels somewhat premium in the hands. The back cover never accumulates dust or finger prints like the glossy back on the note2. The speakers seem louder to me than they were in the note 2.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Many of us here didn't buy N3 for the speaker quality. If it's good then it's better. Otherwise, it's only minor annoyance. If loud speaker quality is very important to you, perhaps you should not bought N3 in the first place because loud speaker has never been a highlight feature in Note series.
I believe most of Note 2 user (including myself) think that N2 speaker quality is not exceptional .
But since you think it's better than HTC One speaker, I'll leave you to your opinion.

N3 is certainly better then N2 in all departments, does it feel more premium yes and no.
The back certainly does look better, the front about the same, N3 side bezel is the worst feature of the phone. It's cheap and ugly!
It feels fragile not premium inmhi, drop test results suggest it is fragile.
N3 Overall definitely better then N2 but I hate the side bezel. UGLY!!

I can see the point about the side rims as it is plastic trying to imitate metal look, though it looks better in the black version than the white. Obviously, it is no where near HTC one or iPhone in the build quality, but then again that has never been samsung's strength. Overall though, it is better built compared to all previous samsung phones I've used. This is the first samsung phone that doesn't squeak and creak when I apply pressure to it, which was a nice surprise.

Yeah, it's got a nice display, I like the charging speed, but.. where's pop up browser gone? I love that on my note 2, Samsung have banished it away on the n3.
My main gripe.. Is audio. And the speaker. What are Samsung thinking by placing a small thin speaker on the bottom of the device?
The sound is thin /toppy.. My note 2 is much better.
If you upgrade expecting better audio, you'll be disappointed.
The note 3 has loudness, but it's so thin it's unbearable fully up.
I'm actually selling my note 3 because of it, I feel let down, and realise how good my note 2 actually is now.

Don't you find it odd that audio performance being sub-standard hasn't been mentioned in any of the reviews/previews? And granted the N3's not in a lot of people's hands yet but if the audio were as bad as you're making it out to be you'd think it would have gotten more attention. So you're either on the leading edge of what's about to be a huge problem or perhaps people have different expectations than you do.

Upgrade from HTC one

Has anyone upgraded to the nexus 5 from the HTC One? And have was it worth it? As am thinking of trading in my HTC One and wanted some honest opinions of the nexus 5
they're very different phones. i have a One, S4 and Nexus 5. i was very hard on the N5 initially for a couple different reasons. my problem was that i was comparing a $400 superphone to $650 superphones. you cant look at it as an upgrade. you have to look at it as having some fun with an unlocked device, virtually no limits, firmware future-proof, etc. its a great device. its just a little different than what you're used to, imo. cheers
-faster professor
-bigger screen
-better camera
-speaker not that good
-lighter than htc1
-wireless charging
-better community and support
-and the list goes on
i have to ask? why? i mean yes the n5 has a faster cpu, and the camera has some nice features, but the one has nice features like big stereo speakers and great indoor photos. and they have a play store edition so aosp roms should be easy, i wouldn't worry about getting kitkat on the one if it's not available already.
I switched from the One to the N5. No complaints here, I thjink the N5 is a better phone.

I don't have my Nexus 5 just yet so I can't say for 100% sure, but right now I'd have to say I agree with all these EXCEPT better camera.... I sold my HTC One to get the Nexus 5. The camera on the HTC One was great, especially in low light. If you consider more megapixels as "better" then yeah the Nexus 5 should have a better camera, but more megapixels does not a better camera make.

Yep. I still have both phones.
First off, the Nexus is smoking fast. Like whoa. As fast as the One is, my One feels dated when I'm using it now.
Second, the speaker on the Nexus sucks, especially when coming from the One. If you use the Boomsound speakers to play music right now, you will miss them. There may or may not be a software fix on the way for this.
Third is the camera. The shutter speed on the Nexus is freaking slow. I didn't really use the Zoe features on the One all that much, and the Nexus camera app can be awkward to use at times, plus it's very bare bones. The HDR+ shots look really nice though. It's not AS good as the One in low light situations, but it's still decent enough. To be honest, I like the way the pictures on the Nexus come out over the One. Plus, no purple tint on the Nexus. Again, might be a software fix for the camera/shutter speed. I hope.
I have mixed feelings on the screen. The Nexus screen has a warmer tone to it than the One, but you probably won't notice the difference unless you're comparing them side by side. The PPI difference is slightly noticeable as well, with things on the screen taking up slightly more real estate than on the One. Also, with the on screen buttons on the Nexus, you usually end up with just as much "content" screen real estate as you do on the One, unless the app is doing the full screen seamless mode.
The Nexus is a step up in some places, and a step down in other places. Overall, I'd say it's a sidegrade more than an upgrade, and I'd ask yourself what are the reasons you want to switch. Personally, I'm switching so that I can get off of Sprint and be able to take the phone to a variety of carriers. As far as getting quick updates, another benefit of the Nexus, even HTC has been getting faster at updating their phones, with the GPE edition of Kit Kat coming very soon, and the Sense version supposedly coming within 90 days.
Hope this helps.

Got my nexus 5 on Friday coming from an HTC one, I gotta say its not that much better. If you have money to blow get the nexus 5 its a fun device. Battery drains pretty fast. Speakers can't compete with the HTC one, camera is a tough one shutter speed is so slow I miss a lot of good shots but when I get a clean shot they come out good. Camera can't keep up with my two year old. Still not sure if I'll be keeping the nexus. Really miss the build quality and speakers of the HTC one.

I'm on both devices, and am glad I didn't sell my HTC One. I wouldn't really say it's an upgrade...
The Nexus 5 is fast, has android 4.4, bigger screen but that's about it. The battery life, camera and speakers basically suck on the Nexus 5.
My daily driver is still the HTC One, it has a better screen, better sound better camera, better battery life and Kitkat is coming soon for the GPE.
The Nexus 5 is used only as a dev phone.

I still have my One as well, you can't beat the speakers on this bad boy and the IR blaster as well. But on the other hand, the N5 is quick. You can tell the difference when you play with both devices. It's all personal preference really. I want to keep both, but I need the money to pay for the N5. Lol. Good luck.

yeah, whatever happened to ir in phones? i know it's not the best way to communicate but hey, everyone has a tv with an ir remote right? so it's not obsolete.... nice that htc realizes that it's still useful.

i did and ill tell you my reasons.
1. that crackling noise the speaker make even when not playing anything made me insane.
2. only two buttons.
3. you cant zoom in with the camera........ every picture will be blurry (camera just isnt good for faraway pictures.)
4. slow charging time
5. you have to wait 90days to get the lates android updates.

I agree with this. The One is probably a better phone overall. If the one had a side power button and a led notification light, I'd have kept mine...but those are the two things that irritated the hell out of me on the One. HTC really needs to get the LED notification light thing going like the Galaxy S line and the N5. If I could only have one, price being no object, I'd carry the One.
I ended up selling the One anyway. I didn't want to let it go to be honest.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I have both. The One's screen is better in my view. The Nexus 5 is a faster phone with better SoC. Build quality on the One is much better. LED notification light on the N5 is better. And so on - they're pretty comparable devices (assuming you're using the GPe of the One).

LOL...are you serious? Of course I know there is a notification light...however, only two colors. And it goes off after 5 min. So it's a horrible version of the one on the N5 (and N4, GS3, GS4, Galaxy Nexus, etc.).

Hi,
If you want some reading: Nexus 5 vs LG G2 comparison...
No, it's not worth buying at all.

You're loosing money every day that passes by without it!
It's the worst phone in the world. Everything is terrible about it. The S4 is better. Google sucks. LG sucks.
What do you expect asking that question in a Nexus 5 forum? I'm not trying to be rude..I'm serious. No one in this forum is going to tell you the G2 (or any other phone) is better.

I guess it's possible that there are some here who regret purchasing the Nexus 5 and maybe OP was trying to draw them out?
But, I am pretty darn happy with mine. The Nexus 5 is probably the best phone I've owned yet (and I've had a lot of phones).

It will be my first Nexus..
If you want to own your phone, be able to shop around with any carrier and never have to sign a contract I don't think there is any better choice. To be fair though the Moto G is also a crazy good deal for those in the U.S.

The z1 is "better" imho. Obviously it's subjective though so its a pointless argument. It doesn't make me want it more than my nexus.
If it was the same price as the nexus, im not sure i'd go for the z1. I prefer the n5 aesthetically,.its just whether that sd slot wins out in the end

Yeah, it's all of that. Multitasking is the fastest/smoothest I've seen on any android device I've owned. I never knew multitasking was intended to be such a seamless experience before I started using this phone.

If you need a phone with a nice camera. I would think twice about this. I have always had the best luck with Samsung when it comes to cameras. HDR+ on the Nexus 5 takes pretty good photos where there is light. Low light photos don't come out very well at all.
I like the N5 because it has a lot of nice features and there is tons of ROM development and performance is great, but when it comes to multitasking and photos, Samsung has multi window and good cameras usually. Development and updates may be hindered on a Samsung device though.
I have to agree with him^. You want super productivity. Go HTC. You want fast and smooth? Nexus. You want awesome camera. Samsung. You want devs to make it all of the above? Nexus 5 hands down. The support I feel on my first nexus device. This one. Is amazing

It does all of that and it is pretty fast! Previously I owned a SG3 for one year and the change with the N5 is immediately noticeable. The camera is way better than the SG3, not so much than the SG4 or G2 at low light conditions. In my case I wanted a top phone for 400eu (32GB one), where the android version come first (with the SG3 was really annoying) and I found the SG4 and G2 too pricy :cyclops:
It comes down to 1 question... do you want a pure Google experience or do you want a phone with LG's user interface on top? Personal preference.

So would you buy one all over again?

Just curious to see how the nexus 5 has done now that it's been out for awhile. I bought a moto x a while back and it's nice and all but I've got the itch to get something else and is hard to pass up the value of the nexus 5. I owned the nexus 4 prior to the x and I loved it (also loved the amount of Dev support). So I guess as the title asks... Would you buy it all over again? Any problems you've encountered in the time you've spent with the device? I want to ask about battery life but I know that's pretty subjective and also completely user dependent so I guess that's only a major concern if anyone has seen drastic problems.
Best device I've owned! Very developmental on XDA! Even popular on eBay!
I've used an iPhone 4, 5 and 5s...
I've used an SI, SII and SIII...
Nothing beats this.
The customisability and knowing that I get updates before 99.99% of the rest of the world always makes me feel good .
I love how stock everything is compared to Samsung's "crapwiz".
Battery life is amazing and it feels like a premium device... Behaves like one and... Is one!
Sure it comes with minor defects (all Nexus 5's do), but the only regret I have is not buying the 32GB version.
I miss having expandable storage, just because I like having space (have never needed to make space... Never will either , just a weird need of mine).
Android is the future... Open-Source = Endless possibilities.
I'll never want anything else!
Do you mind elaborating on the minor defects? Its good to hear someone isn't unhappy about the battery life.
The battery life is the biggest complaint for me, seems way Underpowered

Worth it because I got it in one of those eBay deals at $380 32gb, also the first one had loose volume buttons and this one is perfect.
10/10 would buy again and again.

I'd definitely purchase the N5 again. Usually I go from phone to phone but the N5 is the first phone that I've kept for so long. I've owned this phone since February and to me that's a long time to own a phone compared to what I usually do (buy/trade for every phone that comes out).
With this phone I haven't felt jealous of my girlfriends Galaxy S5 or of the G3, or even the M8. When I had the N4 I felt a bit like I was missing something but the N5 definitely does the job.

The m8 is definitely a premium phone at a premium price and I would of definitely jumped at it but decided not to for 2 reasons. I don't understand the 4 megapixel rear and 5 megapixel front shooter concept. I also dislike how tall the phone is. I think the bezels could of been a bit more slim but whatever.

Well, "megapixels" just specifies the amount of pixels in the taken pictures, doesn't necessarily define the actual quality. My Xperia Arc S (released 2011 lol) has an 8mp camera and it obviously takes worse pictures than my Nexus 5. I played around with an M8 before and the picture quality is actually pretty good.
If I could go back in time and buy one again I would. I wouldn't buy another one now though

Is this purely because its not "technically" up to date hardware-wise anymore, or because of a problem/experience with the device? Too close to the release of another nexus device perhaps?

Lol sorry, just wanted to be clear... Its age somewhat makes me want to move onto something else. Some other the new CPUs "seem" to have better power management in a lower power state. Plus the M8s build / feel-in-hand-quality are reeeeaaally tempting but of course the price reflects that. Buying off-contract makes that hard to stomach. The update cycle seems like a toss up- HTC seems to be better lately about updates and the nexus 5 is quite a ways into its 18mo update life cycle.
I would definitely buy it all over again. You can do pretty much anything you want with the phone; Unlocking the bootloader or rooting the phone is the easiest process compared to every other phone I've had. I've had an HTC Wildfire S (not great but it was the first device I rooted .. pita), an iPhone (which wasn't so bad, but it lacked the customization i wanted), a Galaxy S4 (a great phone if you can put up with Touchwiz and slow updates and etc. Of course you can get the Dev edition if you feel like paying an extra 300-400 dollars for a better battery and a removable sd card compared to the Nexus 5, which isn't worth it), a Moto X (no complaints other than it felt too small), and now a Nexus 5 (best phone ever).
To be completely honest, I would buy it three times over just because I don't like having what everyone else has. Everyone I see with a smartphone either has an iPhone or a Galaxy. I've never really had anyone ask me about my phone, but I've never seen anyone else in my area with a Nexus 5. I'm sure someone has one, but I've not seen one yet
EDIT: Oh yeah and getting the updates first with no bs. Of course that doesn't really matter to me because I run Paranoid Android, but just the fact that we get that is awesome.
Yeah the updates are the icing on the cake. Ease of use (as far as gaining root) is also a REALLY big deal for me. Took me FOREVER to finally build up the courage to root my nexus 4 when I had it. Im not your average end user, but I'm not the MOST tech savvy person on the planet that's for sure. The process is so simple to me now but I have nothing to compare it to (Samsung HTC or other devices)
I'm not quite sure. The HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5 each have their draws to me...
Galaxy S5:
Waterproof
WiFi Calling (I'm on T-Mobile)
VoLTE
HTC One M8:
Aluminum build
Audio quality (both speakers and headphone output)
WiFi Calling
My biggest complaint about the phone is the audio quality... The speaker is actually not terrible but the headphone output is very poor. Even my old Galaxy Nexus sounds better with my headphones. If I were buying it today, I'd probably get the M8. But the lack of an easy root would be a pain, primarily for tethering.

I am very aware of what megapixels bring to the table, but what happens when you want to blow up that tiny 4 megapixel picture and print it on a larger scale for display?
HTC downgraded the pixels because they claimed most people only take pics to upload to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. I believe they are right about what majority use the camera for but what about those like myself that require higher resolution?
